Creating an outdoor oasis around the fire pit

Warm summer weather provides the perfect opportunity to transform your backyard into an oasis that brings your daily life outdoors. Your backyard should be an extension of your home, adding usable square footage that welcomes family and friends. If you’ve ever been transfixed while watching a fire’s dancing flames, you know that a fire pit creates an unrivaled ambiance. It enlivens an outdoor space while providing warmth, the ability to cook, and radiating a feeling of summer nostalgia.

Fire pits have a calming effect; the heat and warm glow helps us relax and brings people together to share stories, late-night conversations, and of course, roast s’mores. Creating the perfect oasis around your fire pit will depend on your space, style, and the type of fire pit you choose.

How you design the area around your fire pit will depend on which type of fire pit is right for your lifestyle and yard. Whether you’re building a traditional wood-burning fire pit yourself or looking for a portable option with a propane tank that you can take camping, each has pros and cons that you need to weigh.

Wood-burning fire pits replicate traditional campfires. Made from various materials and available as both permanent and portable options, they provide warmth, the crackling sound of wood, and the ability to cook over

its fire. Built-in fire pits are customizable and can be constructed with stone or brick over a weekend, whereas store-bought fire pits may carry a high price tag but come in various sizes—some of which allow for portability. Wood-burning fire pits also produce varying amounts of smoke that can irritate your eyes, nose and throat, the smell of which can also attach to fabrics.

Non-wood-burning fire pits have become more popular for their convenience in the backyard and more contemporary designs. Propane options are easily turned on and off without the messy ashes but don’t produce the warmth of a wood-burning fire and require an attached propane tank that needs regular refills. Gel fuel fire pits don’t emit smoke and cost less initially but require refueling every couple of hours. Natural gas fire pits connect to your home’s gas line. Its convenient supply and easy maintenance make it popular among homeowners, but it’s not ideal for cooking, isn’t portable, and is often costly to install.

Whether you envision relaxing backyard evenings with s’mores under the stars or plan to fill the space with friends and family ready to battle for this year’s croquet championship, seating sets the tone. If there are not enough

seats, people won’t linger. If there’s not enough heat, people might head inside. Luckily, when it comes to sitting around a fire pit, there’s no shortage of creative options.

Safety is the top priority when planning your fire pit area—the seats must be a safe distance from the fire. Most experts recommend three to four feet between seating and the outermost edge of the fire pit. This ensures you are close enough to feel the heat yet not so close as to cause a safety hazard.

Next, you’ll want to consider style and space. Once you’ve decided on the type of fire pit that will work the best for your needs, look at the aesthetics of your home and backyard. Do you want a rustic vibe or a sleek, modern ambiance? How comfortable do you want the seats to be? Sitting on a wooden log bench is great for camping but can get uncomfortable quickly.

Adirondack chairs are the most traditional choice for fire-pit seating. They are comfortable, sit low to the ground, and have wide armrests providing a spot to set drinks and plates. Adirondack chairs come in a myriad of colors and weather-resistant materials. Depending on which kind you select, they can carry a steep price tag at several hundred dollars per chair, but the ease of simply hosing them off makes them a popular choice.

If you have an abundance of space, built-in hardscape circular benches of stone or brick pair beautifully around a fire pit. The curved shape fits perfectly around a circular fire-pit design, and the stone or concrete is fire-resistant. Depending on the material and installation method, this option can vary in price but will last for decades. Include outdoor throw pillows or a bench seat cushion for added comfort.

Transform your backyard into an oasis that brings your daily life outdoors.

Sectional sofas and outdoor furniture are designed for comfort with thick, deep cushions that offer a luxurious space where you might want to take a quick nap. Often made of teak or outdoor wicker, they sit low to the ground so you can enjoy the warmth from the fire. The type of fire pit you selected is important when choosing outdoor furniture with fabric cushions. The smoke smell from a wood-burning fire can penetrate fabric, causing the smoky odor to linger. Additionally, due to rain and snow in the Inland Northwest, store cushions indoors during winter or replace them each year. The cost of outdoor furniture varies widely, so shop around for one in your price range.

Whichever type of fire pit you choose or style of seating and ambiance you set, the joy of spending time outdoors by the fire pit creates lasting memories. Whether wine tasting with friends or hosting a neighborhood outdoor movie night, s’mores roasted over the fire taste just as good on a plush lounge chair as on an old folding patio chair.

In the beautiful towns of Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, Idaho, a remarkable organization called the 7B/9B Crop-Swap is making a tangible difference in the community by addressing food insecurity and promoting a shareable food movement. Spearheaded by Tia Worzala, the president and founder of this nonprofit, the Crop-Swap movement provides fruits and vegetables to children, the elderly, firefighters during fire season, and families in need throughout the summer months.

This innovative initiative revolves around the concept of crop swapping, enabling people to meet their neighbors, exchange, sell or donate excess produce, and engage in fair bartering for fresh and local goods. With free weekly harvest baskets available for pickup in Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry, the Crop-Swap movement extends its impact beyond food provision, offering pumpkins for children during Halloween and organizing Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for families in need.

At the heart of the Crop-Swap movement lies a strong sense of community and inclusivity. Tia emphasizes that the 7B/9B CropSwap embraces the principle that no one owes an explanation for their circumstances, and the group is there to provide support without prying or judgment. The essence of the Crop-Swap lies in the spirit of collaboration and trade. If one person has strawberries and another has rhubarb, they can work together to ensure both have enough to create a delicious pie. Additionally, the Crop-Swap serves as a valuable resource for those who may not be able to donate money but have surplus crops that can be exchanged for other products they cannot buy or grow in their area.

Tia expresses that the movement is not limited to those in need; it encourages everyone to participate, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility. She acknowledges the invaluable support of individuals like Mrs. Diana at Sam's Produce in Sagle, who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure the success of

the Crop-Swap by providing extra produce from her stand. Don Reese's donation of canning jars, lids and rings has also made a significant impact on the movement, enabling the preservation and storage of surplus produce.

Crop-Swap is a year-round endeavor that encompasses all that North Idaho's fertile land has to offer. As Tia explains, “The movement begins its bustling activities as the sun greets the region in April and continues tirelessly until the last meal is delivered on December 23, just in time for Christmas.” In between harvests, the dedicated members of Crop-Swap meticulously organize and preserve the bountiful produce, ensuring a seamless transition to the next season. During the summer months, when the gardens are in full swing, it is all hands on deck. In the fall, the focus shifts to canning and preserving. Tia acknowledges the challenges and demands of the movement but finds deep fulfillment in witnessing the positive impact they are making in their community. This spring, she worked on expanding their garden, describing the arduous process of starting from scratch and the determination to complete it by the end of May. Tia and

her family exemplify the unwavering commitment required to meet their goals, despite the challenges they face.

The significance of the 7B/9B Crop-Swap movement became even more apparent during the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Neighbors were able to exchange the produce they had for the items they needed, fostering an environment of mutual support and sustainability. The Crop-Swap not only ensured that the community had access to food but also created a platform for like-minded individuals to come together as a team, working toward a shared goal. Tia describes the joy and happiness on people's faces when they see what a week’s worth of produce is. “When you are on the pickup list for the week, we make sure, no matter the size of your family, that each person has their daily servings of fruits and vegetables.”

Tia is a woman who has dedicated her life to the noble cause of ensuring that everyone has access to food. Growing up on the “wrong side of the tracks,” Tia experienced firsthand the pain of hunger and the uncertainty of not knowing where the next meal

would come from. As a child, she often endured summers without the reliable support of school lunches. It was during those challenging times that Tia turned to gardening as a means of providing sustenance for herself and her family.

Tia's initial knowledge of gardening came from her grandmother in Oregon and her neighbor Hal. Armed with their teachings and driven by a desire to alleviate hunger, she embarked on her gardening journey with limited resources and knowledge. However, her determination and passion for this vital skill grew over the course of two decades. Witnessing too many hungry individuals in her community fueled Tia's inspiration to grow food and help others do the same. She firmly believes in the importance of equipping children and parents with the knowledge of growing and preserving their own food. Tia's deep-rooted commitment to feeding people permeates every aspect of her life. She views it as her responsibility and obligation to teach others about sustainable practices. According to Tia, access to food is a basic human right, and it is unjust for some to have an abundance while others go hungry. Her dedication to this cause is palpable in her meticulous displays of food, treating them like works of art along the wall. Tia takes immense pride in her ability to provide for her family and community, driven by an unwavering belief that everyone deserves access to nourishment.

Her unwavering passion sometimes keeps Tia awake at night, pondering the issue of hunger that is more pervasive than many people realize. Motivated by this awareness, she made it her mission to teach her children the importance of supporting their community and assisting those in need. Together, they utilize their garden as a source of sustenance for others. The organization firmly believes that it is their duty to educate individuals on sustainable practices while striving to make food accessible for all. Tia Worzala and the Crop-Swap movement exemplify resilience, dedication and love in their tireless efforts to combat food insecurity. Let us draw inspiration from Tia and this movement as we work toward a more equitable and nourished future for all.

MIKE COWLEY

Mathematics, Bonners Ferry High School

This June, after 34 years of teaching— the last 30 of which at Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS)—Mike Cowley retired from his post as the school's stalwart mathematics teacher.

A fourth-generation resident and true Badger at heart, Mike's legacy and impact in Bonners Ferry will continue for years to come.

"My roots are definitely here [and] my heart is here," Mike said of Bonners Ferry. "This I consider home, no matter where I happen to be."

Mike grew up on a farm 5 miles outside of town and began attending school in the Boundary County School District in the first grade. Sports were his passion from a young age, and Mike became a standout athlete during his time at BFHS, competing in football and track and field, and earning All-League honors as a senior in basketball. Mike also played drums in the BFHS band and recalls fond memories of marching in various parades throughout North Idaho and the surrounding area.

"I had such a good experience growing up here, and especially in high school," Mike remembered, adding, "I think that’s what drew me back here to teach at the high school. I wanted to continue that for myself and also help the kids have an enjoyable high school experience."

After graduating from BFHS in 1980, Mike moved to Spokane, where he attended Whitworth College (now Whitworth University) to study history and mathematics. Mike always thought he would work in a

math-related field, but it was his desire to go into coaching that pushed him to pursue a teaching career.

Mike graduated from Whitworth in 1984 and later took his first teaching position at a K–8 school located on Fort Irwin Army Base in Southern California, where he began his teaching and coaching careers and met his wife, Amy.

After four years at Fort Irwin, Mike took a position at BFHS, and he and Amy moved back to Mike's hometown.

Over the years, Mike stayed involved in the school community, running the football scoreboard, coaching everything from C team football to JV girls basketball and planning the yearly "senior sneak" trip to the Fairmont Hot Springs in British Columbia.

"I've been doing this long enough that I've had a lot of kids of kids that I coached or taught," Mike said. "A lot of the kids I coached, I now have their kids as students or have had them [in the past]."

Mike explained that being a teacher will always be a big part of his identity, and he said he plans to stay involved with the BFHS community in the future, which has shaped him into the person he is today.

He is thankful for the staff, students and community members he has developed relationships with over the years.

"As I look back on everything, God has paved the way for me," Mike said.

Student-Athlete in the spotlight

ne of David Hammons’ earliest childhood memories still sticks with him to this day.

"I remember getting signed up for wrestling as a little kid," David recalled. "At that point I was hooked and knew I wanted to be an athlete."

Since that wrestling season all those years ago, David has grown up and matured, but his passion for sports has remained the same. Having recently graduated from Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS), David closed his athletic career with a senior year to remember.

DAVID HAMMONS

He started at left tackle and played defensive line for the Badgers football team that finished 9-1 and won the Intermountain League (IML) title last fall, played forward on the 23-2 boys basketball squad that finished as the 3A state runner-up, and emerged as a standout pitcher, hitter and first baseman for the IML-champion baseball team.

David was chosen by BFHS Head Baseball Coach Tom Turpin for the Most Improved Player Award following the spring season, and his .325 batting average, 1.050 earned run average, and .977 field percentage earned him a spot on the IML All-League team as well.

While David has savored each of these achievements, what he appreciates the most about this past year—and all the time he

has spent playing sports in Bonners Ferry growing up—are the relationships he has formed with his teammates.

"I enjoy the friendships and brotherhood I have built over the years playing with [my] teammates," David said.

When David is not playing sports, he loves to be outside and to go hunting and fishing.

This summer, David is attending Northwest Lineman College in Meridian, Idaho, where he is being trained for a career in the power delivery industry.

While his current plans do not involve playing college ball, David is thankful for all the memories he made on the field and court throughout his youth.

During his senior year, David had a unique opportunity to serve the next generation of Badger athletes.

"This year I got to give back by visiting our local elementary schools during their lunch recess and played football with them," David noted. "It was such a rewarding way to give back and something I know would have had such a huge impact on me when I was little."

As David tossed the football around and interacted with the students, he could almost picture his younger self, ecstatic about the opportunity to join the youth wrestling team.

Boundary County prepares for fair week 2023

28 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL july/august 2023

Each August, when all the Boundary County Fair activities are over and the fairgrounds clears out, fair manager Paula Burt and the small fairgrounds staff take a collective sigh of relief, appreciating another successful fair week.

Then, for approximately one month, Paula takes some time to relax, recharge, and take her mind off anything fair-related before all the planning begins again.

"When the fair ends, I try to take a month off from thinking about it," Paula noted. "But getting entertainment acts and judges must be done early."

By mid-September, Paula is back to work, coordinating the fair theme and artwork ideas for the next year and preparing a submission to the fair board, which is made up of five individuals—Ken Goggia, Stacie Watts, Bert Wood, Glenda Poston and Dave Wenk—who make the final decisions on fairground improvements and activities.

This year, Paula's process remained the same, and after 11 months of hard work and planning, she is excited for all that the 2023 Boundary County Fair, which runs from August 8 through 12, has to offer.

As this year's fair theme states, Paula and the fairgrounds staff are ready to Sew It. Grow It. Show It!

Each year, the fairgrounds staff encourages residents to submit ideas for the next fair theme, and the final selection this time seemed obvious.

"This year's theme was actually submitted by two people—one from previous years and the other this year," Paula explained. "So, the [fair] board decided it must be a great idea."

For 2023, the fair book cover artwork was designed by Shelli Cowell, and Bri Feuerstein created the winning T-shirt design.

As far as events at this year's fair, Paula excitedly pointed out that many past favorites will be returning, and some new activities will be added to the schedule as well.

Plans are in place to have a yard game area on the blacktop for fairgoers to enjoy throughout the week, and the corn hole tournament will once again take place on Wednesday night.

"We had such great feedback about the corn hole tournament that we are bringing that back with live entertainment from Christy Lee and Luke Yates," Paula said. "We hope to make it an annual event."

Last year, the butterfly house was a big draw, and Paula said she plans to bring it back for children of all ages to enjoy again this summer.

the fair has to offer,"

Additional headline activities for each day at the 2023 Boundary County Fair include:

Tuesday: Opening ceremonies starting at 6pm

Wednesday: Cornhole tournament at 5pm with live entertainment at 7pm and a beer garden

Thursday: Family Fun Night sponsored by 4-H and FFA starting at 6:30pm

Friday: Livestock auction at 7pm

Saturday: Fair parade at noon, and free concert beginning at 7pm with a beer garden

"This will be the fourth year we have offered a free concert on Saturday night for everyone to come out and relax while celebrating another successful fair year," Paula said.

The concert will feature attention-grabbing, high-energy tunes from Coeur d'Alene-based rock and country group The Sam Leyde Band.

Planning and executing a successful fair week requires a lot of time, manpower and money, and Paula acknowledged that the fair would not be possible without the selfless support of numerous individuals throughout the Boundary County community.

"We always have a need for volunteers during the fair," Paula explained. "There are volunteers who have been helping with the fair for over 25 years; some are ready to step down and let the younger generation step up, but we have a hard time finding those willing to come out."

As another fair week quickly approaches, Paula took a moment to reflect on some of her favorite fair memories. The 2020 fair came to mind right away.

"It was our 100th [anniversary] fair, and the world was shut down, but we were determined to celebrate this milestone," Paula remembered. "We were creative in how to abide by the social distancing rules that were in place and still try to maintain some normalcy to the fair.

"Everyone was still able to come and enjoy the fair if they wanted—and it even created some new events that we still enjoy!"

For Paula, that resilience and community collaboration is what the Boundary County Fair is all about, and it is the reason she loves what she does.

"I enjoy seeing the community come together and enjoy all the different things the fair has to offer," Paula said. "It's great to see the youth help one another out and set aside any differences they might have in another setting."

Northwest Adventures: Which one is right for you?

36 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL july/august 2023
the Outdoors

Summer is when the Northwest takes center stage and shines like the sun on the sea. There’s nothing quite like a summer day spent outdoors, enjoying the picturesque views of glistening rivers and lakes surrounded by evergreen trees, only falling into shadow when the sun sets behind the beautifully steadfast mountain ranges.

The warm summer weather creates an idyllic time for outdoor activities. Access to some of the greatest rivers in the country, hundreds of campsites, thousands of trails and lakes provide abundant opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.

Whether you’re ready for extreme whitewater rafting, planning a family camping trip, or outdoor wine tasting tours are more your thing, here are some outdoor adventures to try based on your interests and personality.

If you like an outdoor walk in nature

It may be the fresh air, the serenity, or the forced disconnect that comes with no cell service in the mountains, but hiking has a way of clearing your mind and making you feel calm and refreshed. Whether you’re traversing a steep grade to a panoramic mountain peak, overnight

backpacking through the Cascade or Rocky Mountain Ranges, or just taking a quiet walk in the forest, the benefits of hiking are as vast as the mountains themselves.

Hiking has many advantages and is even medically prescribed as “ecotherapy” for the mental health benefits it provides. It can improve your overall fitness and stamina while also offering options for any skill and ability level. Looking for an easy hike close to home? Or, maybe something more challenging that ends at a hot spring? In the Northwest, you don’t have to go far to find a beautiful spot to suit your needs. Plus, there are numerous websites that provide details and difficulty levels of hiking trails so you can be well-prepared before setting out on your adventure.

If your ideal outdoor experience includes charcuterie and tastings

One of the best parts of having so many wineries in the Northwest are the opportunities to enjoy the beautiful scenery that comes with vast sprawling vineyards. And, with all the amazing vineyards clustered together throughout the region, who says you can’t experience the outdoors while tasting some of the award-winning wines?

Valleys adorned with thousands of rows of grapevines surrounded by rolling hills, mountains and rivers provide panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere not to be rivaled. Since they’re also a hotspot for travelers, there is often a wide variety of restaurants and outdoor activities nearby. Some ways to get more time in nature while exploring the vineyards are walking tours, bike rentals, or golf courses—there are even wineries where you can have a tasting with your feet in a river. Whether you prefer crisp whites, sparkling bubbly or bold reds, you’ll find plenty of outdoor experience while sipping your tasting flight at one of the

If you’re a thrill-seeker looking for action

Have you ever wondered what life is like for the birds? Parasailing from a boat is a great family activity and gives an aerial view from 500 feet while paragliding lets the wind take you over water. Maybe being high up amongst the trees is more your style. The whole family can take in the view as you glide through the treetops while ziplining down a mountain.

Looking for adventure but want to stay out of the sky? Whitewater rafting is an experience the whole family can enjoy, with each river providing a different current and challenge. If you want an endurance-filled activity, the forests, deserts and backcountry trails make the Northwest one of the country’s best locations for mountain biking. Whichever activity you choose, just make sure you find a reputable guide before heading out.

If you’re a water-lover (don’t forget your life vest!)

There is simply nothing better than a summer day on the water in the Northwest, which makes it one of the top water sport destinations in the US. Whether you want to kayak on the sound searching for seals, go fly fishing for trout in the Snake River, or load up your kids and floaties for a day at the beach, the opportunities to spend a day (or week) on the water are endless.

Boating is a great way to get on the water, and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of gliding across the water on water skis, a wakeboard or innertube. But, being pulled

If you find the idea of living off the grid appealing

Camping is one of the most common outdoor activities in the world, and for good reason. Disconnecting from everyday stressors while being engulfed in nature and sleeping underneath the stars is revitalizing— allowing you to slow down, focus on relationships and learn valuable life skills.

Camping is also very flexible, so depending on whether you’ll be truly roughing it or are looking for more of a Troop Beverly Hills experience, there are options for you to choose what works best for you and your

you spend your camping days and nights. Just remember that many campgrounds require reservations, and some book up quickly!

The Northwest’s proximity to water, mountains and desert make it one of the most appealing places to spend the summer. While some activities require training or expensive equipment (boats/RVs), spending time outdoors doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant—there’s a reason country songs have been written about simply floating a river.

Lifelong memories are made during the little moments of togetherness. So, load up the life vests, water toys, sunscreen and snacks, and wherever you’re headed, you’ll be set for a great adventure.

YOUR SUMMERTIME

An outdoor experience you won’t soon forget

“For us, it is about helping all of our guests create experiences that are fun and memorable, and to have a comfortable— and even luxurious—experience while spending time at North Haven Campground,” smiles Munro Murdock, who alongside wife Rachel owns North Haven Campground.

The Murdocks invite you to experience summer at North Haven— with 2023 marking their first summer season serving their guests.

Just 2 1/2 miles north of Bonners Ferry, you’ll find the stunning campground, nestled in a beautiful wooded and peaceful setting. Open year-round, guest accommodation options include five luxury log cabins (one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans), 21 RV sites, two Conestoga glamping wagons with private bathrooms, and a large log cabin-style bath house with pristine private restrooms, showers and modern laundry facilities. In addition, guests will have access to high-speed fiber optic wireless internet, the on-site camp store and a fun ¾-mile nature walking trail loop. And there are pet-friendly cabins available as well, so your furry family member can enjoy the adventure too.

“At North Haven, we are able to provide a variety of lodging options for travelers between our luxury log cabins, RV sites and our new Conestoga glamping wagons,” says Munro. “We are also planning to

introduce other fun glamping sites in the campground, such as tipis and glamping tents, so that there will be something for everyone.”

As they embark on this new adventure, Munro and Rachel strive to surpass the expectations of their guests. “Our business philosophy is based on the commitment to always be improving and finding ways to make things better and to improve the guest experience,” Munro shares. “We are also committed to making our business a fun and rewarding place to work for our team members.”

The Murdocks have felt the “aloha spirit” from the people of Boundary County and have “great admiration for the industriousness, work ethic and respect for God, country and the community that is so prevalently represented by those we have come to know and meet throughout North Idaho. We hope to be able to make a lasting and positive contribution to the local business community as well.”

For those looking to spend some time this summer outdoors amongst nature, and disconnect from the busyness of everyday life, a stay at North Haven Campground is just the place. Whether it’s a cabin, RV site or glamping wagon, North Haven has you covered. Reservations can be made online at NorthHavenCampground.com or by calling 208.603.9212. What’s Brewing?

Bonners Ferry home to local specialty coffee roaster

Graysen Spiller and Nicholas Carter are raising the bar on specialty coffee right here in Bonners Ferry with Lore Coffee Roasters.

Founded in December 2022, the friends and business partners opened their business online in February 2023, followed by their coffee bar in May. You will find the Lore team at both Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint Farmers Markets throughout the summer season with their mobile coffee carts.

Nicholas moved his family to North Idaho from Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked in specialty coffee for many years. “Our dream was to move to North Idaho in order to curate a wholesome life for our children and start a coffee business in the process,” Nicholas says. “Coffee is what I know. I am truly excited to share specialty coffee with Bonners Ferry.”

Born and raised in a small town in Alaska, Graysen graduated from North Idaho College earlier this year. He is utilizing his background in construction (where he performed administration, logistics and work in the field) as he spearheads the administrative work to ensure the quality of the coffee and efficient processing. He and his wife celebrated their second anniversary on the Fourth of July.

As specialty coffee roasters, Nicholas and Graysen take pride in being able to provide the region with the highest-grade coffee available, taking great care to source excellent coffee, followed by finding the best approach to roasting each individual coffee. “There are a myriad of factors which determine our roasting approach,” notes Nicholas. “The size of the bean, bean density and processing method are at the top of the list. Ultimately, we evaluate our coffee by taste. We taste every batch to ensure quality and consistency.”

And that’s exactly what Nicholas and Graysen have accomplished with Lore Coffee Roasters. “We source unique coffees grown and processed by expert farmers and producers from around the world. Our job is to pay homage to their craft by delicately roasting every coffee to optimum flavor, clarity and distinctness, bringing you into the story behind each coffee,” Graysen shares.

When it comes to their coffee bar, the pair takes the same meticulous approach to preparing coffee beverages. From individually poured filtered coffee aimed at showcasing Lore’s different coffees in the purest form, to their full lineup of traditional espresso drinks and handcrafted simple syrups and sauces, they have something truly special for everyone. As Nicholas affirms, “Our goal isn’t simply to serve good coffee but to curate an experience that can’t be replicated.”

42 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL july/august 2023

In addition, Lore Coffee Roasters offers coffee catering (primarily with their espresso cart with pour-over options), a service intended for events, from weddings to corporate events—a sophisticated touch to any special occasion.

In business for less than a year, they are grateful for the success they’ve already been blessed with and acknowledge they could not have done it alone. “We attribute the success of our business to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our wives, our families, our friends and all our loved ones for allowing us to take this entrepreneurial risk and put ourselves onto the specialty coffee map,” they share.

Nicholas and Graysen are proud to be able to call Bonners Ferry home; a place to live their lives with their families while having the opportunity to own a business. “The community here protects its own, keeps wealth and investment close to home, and buys American. All our packaging is from an American company employing Americans, sourced from American materials,” says Graysen. “We chose to use a Diedrich roaster not only because of the quality build and capabilities but also because it was built 30 minutes down the road in Ponderay.”

When it comes to what Nicholas and Graysen find most rewarding about Lore Coffee Roasters and what they are able to offer the community and beyond, they agree that “bringing specialty coffee to Northern Idaho is the reward in itself, as we get to share in the craft and bring what coffee can be to the people we love.”

Exploring the benefits of cycling for your body, mind, and summer adventures

july/august 2023 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL 45

Summer is a time for fun, sun and relaxation, but for parents, it can also be a stressful time trying to keep kids entertained and engaged while school is out. Prepping for summer activities ahead of time can help alleviate some of that stress and ensure that your kids have a summer filled with fun and meaningful experiences.

As the sun shines brighter and the temperature rises, the allure of summer beckons us to step outside and embrace the great outdoors. And what better way to seize the season than by hopping on a bicycle and pedaling through the warm summer breeze?

Whether you choose the adventure of exploring scenic trails or the convenience of stationary cycling in the comfort of your home or gym, bike riding offers a multitude of benefits for both your physical well-being and mental health. Let’s delve into the advantages of bike riding and uncover how this invigorating activity can contribute to your overall fitness, enhance your cardiovascular health, boost your mood, and bring a sense of joy to your summer adventures.

So, get ready to grab your helmet, fasten your shoelaces, and join us on a journey exploring the transformative power of pedaling through summer.

Bike riding is an excellent form of exercise that provides a full-body workout. It engages various muscle groups, including the legs, glutes, core, and even the upper body if you maintain proper posture. Regular cycling helps to build strength, endurance and cardiovascular fitness. By pedaling, you strengthen your leg muscles, leading to improved balance and stability.

Additionally, cycling is a low-impact exercise, which means it puts less stress on your joints compared to highimpact activities like running. This makes it a suitable option for people of all ages and fitness levels, including those recovering from injuries or dealing with joint pain.

Cycling is also an effective way to maintain a healthy weight. It burns calories, aiding in weight management and reducing the risk of obesity. According to estimates, a person weighing 155 pounds can burn approximately 300 calories during a 30-minute moderate-intensity bike ride.

Furthermore, bike riding promotes cardiovascular health. Pedaling on a regular basis contributes to a healthier heart and improved cardiovascular function. Cycling helps to increase the heart rate, improving blood circulation and lowering the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. It also boosts the production of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol)

Beyond the physical benefits, bike riding offers significant advantages for your mental well-being.

Beyond the physical benefits, bike riding offers significant advantages for your mental well-being. Engaging in regular physical activity releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones, which enhance your mood and reduce stress levels. Cycling outdoors allows you to connect with nature, enjoying the fresh air, scenery and natural beauty around you. This can have a calming effect on the mind and improve your overall sense of well-being.

Moreover, bike riding can serve as a form of meditation and stress relief. When you pedal, you can enter a state of flow, where your mind is fully absorbed in the present moment. This can help you release negative thoughts and worries, promoting mental clarity and relaxation. Cycling can be a form of active mindfulness, allowing you to focus on the rhythmic movement and experience a sense of tranquility.

Bike riding also provides an opportunity for social interaction and community engagement. You can join group rides, cycling clubs, or charity events, where you can connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for biking. This social aspect not only adds enjoyment to your rides but also fosters a sense of belonging and support.

In addition to outdoor bike riding, stationary cycling offers its own set of benefits. Indoor cycling classes, for example, provide a structured and energetic environment led by an instructor, which can be motivating and inspiring. Stationary bikes equipped with modern features like virtual training programs and interactive screens can add an element of excitement and variety to your workout routine.

Stationary cycling allows you to pedal away without worrying about traffic, weather conditions or time constraints. It provides a convenient option for those with busy schedules or limited access to outdoor biking routes. You can cycle at home or the gym, adjusting the resistance levels and intensity according to your fitness goals.

While bike riding offers numerous benefits, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Always wear a properly fitted helmet and appropriate cycling gear. Observe traffic rules, use hand signals, and stay visible to motorists. If you’re cycling outdoors, choose routes that are suitable for your skill level, and stay alert to your surroundings. For stationary cycling, make sure to adjust the bike settings and maintain proper form to prevent injuries.

Bike riding, whether outdoors or indoors, brings a multitude of benefits for your body and mind. It improves physical fitness, promotes cardiovascular health and aids in weight management. Furthermore, it enhances mental well-being, reduces stress, and allows for social interaction and community engagement. So, this summer, hop on your bike or stationary cycle and pedal your way to a healthier, happier you. Enjoy the freedom, the scenery, and the exhilarating feeling of the wind against your face as you embrace the joy of pedaling through summer.

This summer, hop on your bike or stationary cycle and pedal your way to a healthier, happier you.

Nature's Breath

Rejuvenate and revive in the great outdoors

In today's fast-paced and digitally connected world, it's increasingly crucial to step outside, unplug, and reconnect with nature. A breath of fresh air can work wonders for our physical and mental well-being. Immersing ourselves in the natural world allows us to escape daily routines and experience freedom and rejuvenation.

Fresh air brings a myriad of benefits to our bodies. Nature's air is often cleaner and oxygen-rich, providing our lungs with a refreshing boost. This increased oxygen intake improves cardiovascular health, boosts immunity and enhances energy levels. Spending time outdoors exposes us to natural sunlight, essential for vitamin D production, which is crucial for bone health and regulating mood.

Beyond physical advantages, being surrounded by nature profoundly impacts our mental and emotional well-being. Research shows that green spaces reduce stress, elevate mood and promote mental clarity. They provide respite from technology's constant stimulation, allowing us to engage our senses organically. The sights, sounds and smells of nature evoke calm and relaxation, enabling us to recharge and find balance.

Embrace the opportunity to step outside, breathe deeply, and relish nature's simple pleasures. Whether it's a leisurely stroll, a mountain hike, or sitting under a tree, the benefits of getting outdoors and breathing in fresh air are undeniable. It's an invitation to reconnect with ourselves and the world, revitalizing body, mind and spirit.

Boundary Community Hospital's Emergency Department

Saving lives and providing exceptional care in time-sensitive emergencies

Experiencing a heart attack, stroke or other medical emergency can be a terrifying and life-threatening event. In such critical moments, time is of the essence, and knowing where to turn for immediate help can make all the difference. That's where Boundary Community Hospital's (BCH) Emergency Department and first responders step in as a beacon of hope and expert care.

Boundary Community Hospital's Emergency Department is a vital component of the Idaho Time Sensitive Emergency (TSE) System, providing critical care for patients experiencing heart attacks, strokes and traumatic injuries. With designations as a Level II STEMI (heart attack) Center, Level III Stroke Center and Level IV Trauma Center, BCH meets the rigorous criteria established by the State of Idaho, making it a trusted facility for time-sensitive emergencies.

At the heart of the department are highly skilled medical professionals, including experienced physicians and nurses who possess specialized training in emergency medicine, trauma care and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The staff at BCH are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of patient care, which is evident in their certifications in ACLS, trauma nursing, pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and emergency nursing pediatrics (ENPC). This expertise ensures that patients receive topnotch treatment and support during their time of need.

Collaboration is critical in providing efficient emergency care, and BCH recognizes the importance of working closely with first responders, EMTs, paramedics and Life Flight. The hospital's Trauma Team consists of in-house professionals and these essential

first responders, ensuring a coordinated effort to deliver immediate care to patients. By fostering strong relationships with pre-hospital providers, the hospital optimizes the chain of care, allowing for rapid transportation and access to definitive treatment.

One of the significant advantages of seeking emergency care at Boundary Community Hospital is the commitment to minimizing wait times. The staff understands that emergencies can be stressful and that every minute counts in life-threatening situations. By ensuring shorter wait times, patients can find solace in knowing they will receive prompt attention and be on the path to treatment as quickly as possible.

In addition to swift care, the hospital's team aims to create a warm and calming environment for patients and their families. Emergency room visits can be distressing, but the caring and friendly nature of the staff helps alleviate anxiety. The combination of highly trained professionals, efficient workflows, and compassionate care contributes to a positive patient experience, even in times of crisis. Boundary Community Hospital's commitment to the community extends beyond emergency care. As a designated Critical Access Hospital (CAH), BCH is dedicated to serving everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. This dedication ensures that all individuals needing emergency care receive the highest level of medical attention and support.

The Idaho Time Sensitive Emergency System, of which Boundary Community Hospital is a designated participant, addresses the top three preventable causes of death: trauma, stroke and heart attacks (STEMI). The TSE program aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce health care costs by implementing evidence-based care. This comprehensive approach focuses on public education and prevention, seamless coordination between different levels of care, and quality improvement initiatives.

Boundary Community Hospital's Emergency Department plays a pivotal role in the local TSE system, providing critical care for timesensitive emergencies. With its dedicated and highly skilled staff, efficient workflows and a commitment to patient-centered care, the hospital ensures that patients in need receive the best possible treatment and support during challenging times.

The Compass by Margaritaville is a new hotel in Medford that is a partnership with the Coquille Tribe and Margaritaville. The Coquille people’s “Spirit of the Potlatch” is a tradition of hospitality long practiced by the tribe. This welcoming environment is also pet friendly with a location that makes it a perfect base from which to explore Crater Lake National Park.

Although the size of a chain hotel, the Compass brings a resort feel with its high ceilings and tropical décor. The rolling hills of the Rogue Valley surround the pool deck, and the expansive lawn is popular for games of corn hole. The open-air bar has a beachy vibe with tropical drinks, and happy hour offering amazing specials each afternoon. The tropical décor carries into comfortable rooms with custom bedding. Families will love the bunk bed option with a choice of a kingor two queen-size beds, or splurge on a one-bedroom king suite for a couple’s getaway. Pets are welcome with a modest pet fee. Each morning, enjoy a scrumptious breakfast buffet with both hot and cold favorites.

Adventures outside abound in Southern Oregon, featuring options along the Rogue River, a national wild and scenic river, numerous parks and lakes.

eat eat eat

Traveling with pets during the summer necessitates alfresco dining, and Medford has a variety of options. The Southern Oregon Artisan Corridor, located in Central Point, will delight foodies with the Rogue Creamery’s award-winning blue cheeses, Lillie Belle Farms gourmet chocolates and Ledger David Cellars. Pick up supplies for a picnic or relax at Ledger David’s outdoor tasting room to enjoy your bounty. No trip to Crater Lake National Park is complete without a trip to Beckie’s Café for the celebrated pies. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Beckie’s has been dishing up delectable comfort food since 1926. Get your pie to go and enjoy at the picnic tables nestled in a garden shaded by old-growth trees.

A local favorite is Jasper’s, with a variety of burgers, hotdogs and shakes. It’s a dive, but the outdoor garden area is pleasant with tables under shade trees and awnings. Order a burger patty for your dog to enjoy. Jasper’s also has puppy ice cream. Many of the wineries on the wine trails surrounding Medford have pet-friendly areas where visitors can enjoy outdoor tastings.

Insider Tip: Enjoy happy hour each afternoon at The 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill in the Compass, which offers outdoor seating, and Fido is welcome. Great specials on food and drink.

Jaws drop upon the first views of this water-filled collapsed volcano at Crater Lake National Park. It is absolutely stunning, as the rocky terrain contrasts with crystal blue water. The massive snowfall this year deluged the park with 52 feet of snow, so visitors will likely see snow into July before Rim Drive around the lake is completely clear. The park is surprisingly pet friendly with five trails that allow pets. These range from short hikes to the challenging Pacific Crest Trail, which passes through the park. Other areas include the overlooks, roads, campgrounds, picnic areas and paved parking lots.

Insider Tip: Plan to arrive at the park early to avoid the crowds.

You will want to take Highway 62, also known as Crater Lake Highway, from Medford to Crater Lake National Park. On the way back, stop at the Rogue River Gorge Viewpoint for a short .3-mile loop trail, which has four viewpoints of the Rogue River Gorge and interpretive signs. It is pet friendly, but some animals may be frightened by the loud rushing water. Right next door is Beckie’s for a pie stop. A little further down Highway 62 is the Natural Bridge Trail. The shorter trail leads to an ancient lava tube where the Rogue River sinks away, running underground before popping back up further downstream. Later in the summer, when water levels are lower, it forms a natural land bridge. The trail is very scenic with plenty of benches for a rest or to enjoy the sounds of the birds chirping and the rushing water. This stop is also pet friendly.
