Transform your space with autumn-inspired projects

With autumn’s arrival, it’s the perfect time to embark on home improvement projects that capture the essence of the season. From creating a cozy fireplace area to revamping your kitchen and enhancing your outdoor retreat, these projects will transform your living space into a haven that embraces the beauty and warmth of autumn. Whether you’re seeking to enhance aesthetics, improve energy efficiency or create inviting outdoor areas, these ideas will infuse your home with the spirit of the season. Get ready to fall in love with home improvement projects that bring the magic of autumn into your living space!

Revitalize Your Kitchen

Give your kitchen a fresh look and feel by embarking on a fall-inspired kitchen makeover. Start by updating the cabinets with a new coat of paint or staining them in rich, warm hues. Consider replacing outdated hardware with modern fixtures to add a touch of elegance. Upgrade your countertops with durable and stylish materials like granite or quartz, giving your kitchen a luxurious and functional makeover. Enhance the lighting by installing new fixtures or adding under-cabinet lighting for improved visibility and ambiance. Don’t forget about the backsplash—choose tiles in autumnal colors or opt for a nature-inspired pattern. Finally, add decorative touches like seasonal centerpieces or a cozy breakfast nook, complete with comfortable seating and warm lighting. With a kitchen makeover, you’ll create a space that is not only visually appealing but also conducive to preparing delicious meals and gathering with loved ones during the autumn season.

Create a Cozy Fireplace Area

As the temperature drops, creating a cozy fireplace area becomes a top priority. Consider updating your fireplace with a fresh coat of paint, choosing warm, earthy tones that evoke the essence of autumn. Enhance the visual appeal by installing new tiles or a stone surround that complements the color scheme. If you don’t have a fireplace, explore options for a gas or electric insert that provides both warmth and a charming focal point. Arrange cozy seating nearby, complete with soft throws and plush pillows, to create a comfortable nook where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quality time with loved ones. A revamped fireplace area will become the heart of your home during the autumn months, radiating warmth and coziness.

Boost Energy

Efficiency and Maintain Exterior

Prepare your home for the changing seasons by focusing on energy efficiency and exterior maintenance. Inspect windows and doors for any drafts and seal them to prevent heat loss. Upgrade insulation in your attic and walls to ensure your home remains comfortable throughout autumn. Install weather stripping around doors and windows, and consider replacing outdated thermostats with programmable or smart thermostats to optimize energy usage. On the exterior, inspect the roof for damaged shingles, clean out gutters, and trim tree branches that could potentially cause damage during storms. Give your home a fresh coat of paint or stain to protect it from the elements and enhance its curb appeal. Don’t forget to aerate the lawn, apply fall fertilizer, and plant autumn flowers for a vibrant and inviting exterior. By addressing energy efficiency and exterior maintenance, you’ll ensure your home is ready for the autumn season.

Create an Inviting Outdoor Retreat

Maximize your enjoyment of the beautiful autumn weather by transforming your outdoor space into an inviting retreat. Install a fire pit or patio heater to extend outdoor usability into the cooler evenings. Create comfortable seating areas with cozy outdoor furniture, adorned with warm-hued cushions and blankets. Consider adding string lights or lanterns to create a warm and inviting ambiance. Enhance the cozy atmosphere with fall-themed decorations such as pumpkins, gourds and autumn wreaths. If you have a garden, plant late-blooming flowers or add autumnal plants to create a vibrant display of colors. An outdoor retreat will allow you to savor the beauty of the season, host gatherings with friends and family, or simply relax in nature’s embrace.

PLANT LATE-BLOOMING FLOWERS OR ADD AUTUMNAL PLANTS TO CREATE A VIBRANT DISPLAY OF COLORS.

THE COFFEE OASIS

Creating pathways for our youth

253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE september/october 2023 18

When we look at the youth in our community, we’re looking at a part of ourselves—both a snapshot of things that were but also a hope in what could be. Given purpose, safety, mentorship, time and space to just “be,” our youth can have some of what we might have gone without: an opportunity to choose and discover who they are and what they want to be.

The Coffee Oasis is a Christian nonprofit organization that exists to do just that—“to create pathways of opportunity for youth to be restored in heart, mind, soul and body.” To do this, the nonprofit believes in creating programs that allow for community involvement. They provide crisis services, youth engagement, housing services and youth development. What’s more, The Coffee Oasis believes in the importance of the greater community as a key part in their success for youth, creating safe shared spaces for community

investment. The Coffee Oasis makes investing in youth as easy as … well, as easy as getting a cup of coffee!

The Coffee Oasis was founded in 1997 by Dave and Cindy Frederick, whose draw to support youth came as a natural outpouring from their lives. Dave was a police chaplain, who in tandem with Cindy, founded Hope in Christ Ministries, which brought the hope of Christ to the pain of the streets. The following year, they opened a shuttered business by the name of The Coffee Oasis, which soon became the place to be for youth in the area, including that of their foster children and their friends. It was those experiences that exposed the Fredericks to youth who were caught in cycles of depression, incarceration, poverty, homelessness and addiction. Youth programs began modestly with “Youth Night” that first Friday of September in 1997. Four youths decided to come over from the “smokers’ corner” (a local hang-out spot) to check out what was going on. Since

september/october 2023 253 LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE 19

then, The Coffee Oasis has grown to encompass thousands of youths throughout Kitsap, and now Pierce, counties, while roasting ethically sourced beans for their delicious espresso drinks.

“The Coffee Oasis is excited to be a part of the fabric of this community. Like one square in a beautiful quilt, we are just one part of a lot of good that is happening in Tacoma. For some people, The Coffee Oasis will be their neighborhood coffee shop. For thousands of youth, The Coffee Oasis will be a place they find belonging, a shelter from life on the streets, job training, and hope for their future,” says Daniel Frederick, The Coffee Oasis’ executive director.

The Coffee Oasis café locations are a safe third place; it’s the presence of the nonprofit in the dayto-day community. However, that’s not where the care for youth in our community ends. The Coffee Oasis provides 24/7 crisis services, offering a compassionate ear from trained volunteers. All one has to do is text HELP to 360.377.5560 to reach their crisis text services. In addition, there is a walk-in crisis service that offers a less intimidating

space for crisis support (although a hospital may be recommended), a mobile crisis response, substance use counseling, and crisis navigation resources.

To reach homeless youth, Coffee Oasis has dedicated youth programs outreach staff on the streets and in schools, making efforts to meet youth where they are. They connect, build relationships, and invite youth to various programs. They don’t just drop in and walk off, they see them later—either at The Coffee Oasis, outside, or in schools. They teach classes in schools, they play sports, and just generally get connected. Included in their crisis services are youth drop-in centers that provide showers, meals, laundry, clothing, field trips and classes.

The Coffee Oasis also provides housing services. This means that there are several shelters, the closest being The Loft in Tacoma. The Loft is a 12-bed licensed DCYF under-age youth shelter that provides a safe and encouraging place to live while working toward sustainable living. Eligible youth are those of the ages of 13 to 17 that for whatever reason do not have a safe place to stay, whether it is because of exploitation, abuse or homelessness. Youth of all genders are welcome to the use of 12 beds, showers, meals, resource referral, case management, medical care, familial reunification, and after-care. Youth are accepted 24/7 on a first come, first served basis by calling 253.328.6127 or by email at tacoma@thecoffeeoasis.com.

Case management through The Coffee Oasis is not just helping youth 13 through 25 achieve the practical aspects of living independently, such as getting a driver’s license or ID, pursuing education or obtaining legal help. Going through case management is also

“I feel fortunate to be able to inspire, empower and motivate the over-50 crowd to believe that anything is possible, and it’s never too late to participate in an active and fitness lifestyle.”

Senior phenom Madonna Boclair Hanna, age 70, won the gold medal in the 4x100 relay at the National Senior Games. She also posted her personal best qualifying for the 50-meter finals for the first time and finishing fifth. In the 100-meter event, she finished in fifth, moving up two spots from last year. Madonna is a competitive amateur sprinter. She came to the sport later in life, pursuing a dream she held from childhood. Madonna has a background in fashion and is a retired award-winning educator. Today, in addition to her athletic career, she is a public speaker and actor.

Q. Your husband was your first coach and trained you for your initial success in running. What is it like to now train with pro-runner and Olympic hopeful Marcus Chambers and have the latest insight and fitness technology available?

A. Believe me, at my age, I am extremely fortunate to be coached by Marcus Chambers. His knowledge of sprinting and appropriate lifting workouts is a gift and blessing to me. At first, when the coaching baton was passed to him, I found the workouts to be extremely different and difficult. Jogging with a backpack filled with bricks and wearing ankle weights training with my husband garnered me 13 Washington State Senior Games (WSSG) medals and one National Senior Games (NSG). Chambers’ constant drilling was grueling! I almost quit … after all, this is a hobby!

I knew better, I am not a quitter! I mentally slapped some sense into myself and persevered, respecting the coach’s expertise. I realized that accepting change comes with accepting a new attitude. Marcus is teaching me the mechanics of competitive sprinting and has assembled an impressive team of professionals to assist me. My fitness trainer/physical therapist Eric Waterland, Waterland Performance, and Todd Valentine, therapeutic massage therapist, Elite Massage and Fitness. I stay physically prepared for competitions by listening to and following their instructions.

Chambers is helping me to be more competitive at the national level. During the 2022 NSG, I competed in my first 100-meter finals, posting a new personal best and moved up in national rankings from 17th to seventh! In four years, we have achieved six WSSG medals (two silver and four gold) and a 4x100-relay race NSG silver medal and a 100-meter seventh-place ribbon.

Q. Red, white and blue have become your signature colors. Are there any plans to combine your love of fashion and running into a brand or product?

A. I have no plans yet, but now I know that absolutely anything is possible! I would love to collaborate with a major athletic, leisure wear firm or designer. The boomer active wear

market is exciting and growing. It would use my extensive fashion expertise. In the past I was a corporate retail executive at a major department store in downtown Boston. Later, I worked at the corporate headquarters for a national women’s apparel manufacturer as an assistant fashion merchandiser for their misses division and was also an assistant to the public relations director. I’m also familiar with production, design and marketing. I was also a runway model and coordinated fashion shows. I am a retired fashion marketing instructor with 32 years of experience. Presently, I enjoy mentoring a few young local designers. By the way, I do have another signature fashion color, black and luscious shocking pink, a favorite of the late fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli.

Q. How does it feel to be a role model for the over-50 crowd?

A. I feel fortunate to be able to inspire, empower and motivate the over-50 crowd to believe that anything is possible, and it’s never too late to participate in an active and fitness lifestyle. I greatly appreciate the support and camaraderie of USATF Masters champion, Tacoma resident Martha Mendenhall, who refers to me as a “Senior Phenom.” What a compliment. She’s an inspiration and role model to me!

I am grateful to be able to participate in the Washington State Senior Games (WSSG) since 2011 and the National Senior Games (NSG) since 2013. The 2023 NSG [marked] my fourth

trip to nationals. I appreciate the support of my fellow competitors.

Because of my interview on the Today Show, originally aired on MLK Jr. Day and re-aired on June 19 as part of a Juneteenth Special, and being a freelance writer for the Ethel, an AARP online publication, has expanded my circle of influence to motivate seniors and other individuals at the national level.

Q. You just signed your first brand deal. How does it feel to be a 70-year-old representative of this company?

A. It feels fabulous to be valued and appreciated! I’d like to share that living life agelessly is liberating, and I truly believe that absolutely anything is possible. I was offered sponsorship from GetSetUp, an online community of older adults who want to learn, connect with others and unlock new life experiences. The platform offers interactive classes taught by peers around the clock.

Through their sponsorship, I received a $1,000 stipend to help with training and competition expenses, and a full GetSetUp branded kit, symbolizing unity and empowerment. Plus, I will gain exclusive access to GetSetUp’s innovative online platform to share my stories, insights and training techniques with a global audience through online classes, videos, and as an ambassador at the National Senior Games and with media.

Fun in Motion

Inspiring active play for children’s health

Childhood is a phase of life brimming with energy and enthusiasm. It’s an age characterized by exploration, play and physical activity. However, in this digital era, electronic devices can often overshadow traditional play, hindering children’s physical development. To combat this issue, a delightful and engaging approach is to promote exercise through play, which effectively intertwines the benefits of physical activity with the joy of childhood fun.

Exercise is vital for a child’s overall health, enhancing growth, strengthening muscles, refining motor skills and promoting mental well-being. It has also been linked to improved academic performance and self-esteem. The World Health Organization suggests that children aged 5 to 17 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorousintensity physical activity daily. Encouraging exercise through play can help achieve these recommendations while offering an enjoyable experience to your child.

Play-based exercises can be facilitated both indoors and outdoors, involving a variety of activities such as hide and seek, tag, hopscotch, or even structured sports. These games not only support physical fitness but also stimulate cognitive, emotional and social development.

Outdoor play presents numerous opportunities for enjoyable exercise. Encouraging your child to participate in classic games like tag or capture the flag provides them with a cardiovascular workout while promoting teamwork and strategic thinking. Nature walks and bike rides offer a change of scenery and can stimulate curiosity about the environment. Even gardening can be a source of physical activity and a lesson about nature and responsibility. Outdoor playgrounds are another excellent avenue, where climbing, swinging and sliding aid in muscle development and coordination.

Indoor play can be just as beneficial if the weather or other circumstances don’t allow for outside activities. Create a mini-obstacle course using household items, fostering an adventurous spirit and facilitating coordination and problem-solving skills. Games like “Simon Says” or “Musical Chairs” encourage movement while promoting listening skills and quick decision-making. Dance parties can also be a fun way to get your child moving, fostering creativity and rhythm.

While encouraging exercise through play, it’s important to focus on fun rather than competition. Making the activity enjoyable increases the likelihood that the child will continue to engage in physical activity as they grow older. Additionally, it’s crucial to lead by example; children are more likely to follow an active lifestyle if they see their

parents or guardians enjoying physical activities. Involvement in the choice of activity is another crucial aspect. Offer your child a range of games or sports to choose from, catering to their interests and abilities. This autonomy can significantly increase their motivation to participate.

Combining play and exercise also paves the way for teaching vital life skills. Games involving teams can develop cooperation and communication skills, while solo games can enhance self-confidence and determination. Additionally, introducing the concepts of friendly competition, winning and losing can help children cope with similar situations in the future.

However, while incorporating exercise into play, remember to ensure safety. All activities should be age-appropriate and conducted in a secure environment. Use safety equipment when necessary, like helmets for bike riding or knee pads for rollerblading.

It’s also essential to maintain a balanced approach. Remember that rest and recovery are equally important in a child’s routine. Provide ample time for calm activities such as reading, drawing, or other creative pursuits.

An active childhood sets the foundation for a healthy and happy adulthood. Encouraging exercise through play, while ensuring safety and balance, can truly make fitness an enjoyable part of your child’s life. It is a practical and fun-filled strategy to ensure your child’s health and happiness, ensuring they are well-equipped to face the future.

As a parent or caregiver, it can seem like a daunting task to introduce and maintain an exercise routine for your child, particularly with the allure of screen time and other sedentary activities. However, by making it a playful and enjoyable experience, children are more likely to participate willingly and actively.

To effectively encourage exercise through play, it’s vital to be creative and innovative. Parents can transform mundane chores into fun games. For instance, tidying up can become a race to see who can pick up the most toys in a set time. Even a grocery shopping trip can be made into an activity involving walking and carrying items, while teaching about food groups and healthy choices.

Additionally, technology need not be the enemy of physical activity. There are numerous interactive video games that require physical movement, combining children’s interest in digital platforms with exercise. These games often incorporate dancing, sports and other active pursuits, seamlessly merging screen time with physical activity.

Consider involving your child in age-appropriate exercises that you do as well. Yoga, for example, can be introduced with simple poses, creating a shared experience that encourages mindfulness along with physical activity.

Lastly, it’s essential to praise and positively reinforce your child’s engagement in these play-based activities. Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to instill a sense of accomplishment and positivity toward exercise.

By adopting these strategies, parents can effectively integrate exercise into their child’s daily routine, fostering an enduring appreciation for physical activity. The key lies in making it enjoyable and participatory, effectively ensuring that exercise through play becomes a cherished part of their childhood and beyond.

Recognition of their efforts can go a long way in motivating them to continue.

The Benefits of Routine

Back

to school and back on

As we shift back to school, embracing a structured routine can yield unexpected health benefits. An established routine enhances both physical and mental health. On a physical level, maintaining consistent sleep and meal schedules helps regulate our bodies' internal clocks, fostering better sleep and digestion. A nutritious, timely breakfast jumpstarts metabolism and improves concentration, and regular exercise bolsters overall health and energy.

Mentally, routines reduce stress and anxiety. When we know what's coming, we're less likely to feel overwhelmed. Regular study periods support academic success, while scheduled downtime aids relaxation. Importantly, don't forget to incorporate breaks for self-care: reading, meditating, or enjoying a favorite hobby.

Remember, flexibility is key. Routines should be guidelines, not strict rules, and it's healthy to deviate occasionally. Ultimately, routines should support, not hinder, our well-being. Consistency in scheduling can truly pave the way for a healthier, more balanced lifestyle. schedule 37

Shaping Clients Physically, Mentally and Energetically

The Studio opens third location

“Pilates completely changed my body and how I viewed myself and how I viewed ‘working out,’” recalls Lindsey Naglieri. “I grew up in the era of magazines, Victoria’s Secret models and tox-ICK workout and diet culture, where I equated exercise as necessary punishment to achieve perfection. But Pilates taught me to connect, understand, move and challenge my body in a way that’s respectful, loving and impactful.”

Today, Lindsey is sharing her passion for Pilates with surrounding communities at The Studio through modern Pilates and mindful movement. Here, clients will experience The Studio’s signature group reformer classes which range in intensity to accommodate every level and every mood. “For example, we have a class called The Stretch, where we use our equipment to reform and recover, whether that’s from a challenging workout or sitting too much in our daily lives. And The Sculpt is our high-intensity Pilates class that will work every muscle, even the tiny ones you didn’t realize were there! The Form and The Flow are other can’t-miss classes!” Private sessions are also available for anyone who is looking for a custom-tailored class to help recover from an injury or to build confidence before joining one of the group classes.

It was 2019 when Lindsey was inspired to seriously pursue opening her own studio, and in July of that year, she celebrated the Grand Opening of The Studio in Tacoma. She would go on to open a second location in Gig Harbor in March 2023, and as of print date, Lindsey is excited to share that they’re gearing up to open their third location in University Place by fall 2023.

When working to create The Studio’s initial location, Lindsey set out to make a space that delivered the Pilates class she would most enjoy taking—which meant music was a major factor. “We love to use our playlists to set the tone, motivating us through the challenging moments and soothing us in the chill ones,” she says.

Another important factor was the realization that Pilates is an investment, and the clients’ time is valuable. Lindsey strives to keep her clients flowing so they leave The Studio feeling efficiently worked, “blissed out,” and like they got their money’s worth. And to top off the experience, Lindsey focused on designing an elevated space that clients would look forward to going to, “where we could congregate away from those sweet kiddos and other responsibilities and just enjoy working on becoming our best, brightest selves.”

Since first opening the door, Lindsey has seen how Pilates not only shapes one physically but even more so mentally and energetically. “My absolute favorite thing is witnessing this shift in our clients! To witness their improved confidence is so beautiful to see, and I feel so honored every time someone chooses to come move with us at The Studio.”

She adds that she feels blessed to be in an industry that helps people feel well; hearing how Pilates is helping her clients physically, from getting better sleep to inspiring them to make healthier choices in other ways, miraculously healing knee and back pain, and improving their endurance doing everything else that they love.

When it comes to the success she’s experienced these past few years at The Studio, Lindsey credits her husband Mike for being 1,000 percent supportive of her endeavor from the beginning. “Along this journey, he’s mopped floors, moved machines, tackled all our laundry and meals at home; the list goes on! I would not be here without him,” she affirms. And then there’s her world-class team of instructors. “They are truly the most dynamic bunch of authentic, inspirational humans around. They are true examples of shining bright, and I feel so lucky to have them share their gifts at The Studio!”

Lindsey is proud of what she is able to offer to others through The Studio. “I hope The Studio continues to reveal to people how beautiful, strong and capable they are and have always been!” she smiles. “Sometimes we just need a reformer to bring it out in us.”

Top treatments and techniques for a youthful glow

42

While a glowing complexion and youthful skin

are always in style, skin-care trends can evolve and change as often as the seasons. Thanks to the latest beauty treatments and technologies, it’s now easier than ever to maintain your skin’s healthy glow into the fall.

your BEST

SEASON this SKIN

Start with some of 2023’s most popular skin-care trends: MINIMALIST ROUTINES

Fall has a way of inspiring change and reigniting routine in every aspect of life. If it’s time to reimagine your skin-care routine this season, we have good news: Minimalism is in. Today’s trending skincare routines require fewer products and less time (and often as a result, less spending).

With multi-use products and multi-faceted tools offering a handful of skin-friendly benefits at once, skin-care routines have become more streamlined. This comes at perfect timing for maintaining proper skin care during the busy back-to-school season.

Serums that pack a punch with vitamins, peptides, antioxidants and soothing acids are an easy way to stay at the top of your skin-care game with minimal product.

Advanced all-in-one tools like the TheraFace Pro and the Solawave Skincare Wand make it easy to perform several different therapies from home. The TheraFace Pro’s attachments include gentle pressurized therapy to release facial tension (battle puffiness, along with three different LED light rings to target fine lines, acne and wrinkles. The small, lightweight Solawave 4-in-1 Skincare Wand completes multiple functions, including gentle massage and therapeutic Red Light Therapy.

With carefully multifaceted products and tools, you can streamline your beauty routine right along with your fall schedule.

SKIN CYCLING

Another way to stretch your beauty budget is skin cycling, an approach that involves applying skin-care products intermittently, in a cycle of about four days at a time. Rather than using all of your products every day, you select a few to use during that four-day period. During that

time, other products will be put on a ‘rest cycle’ and unused, until their application cycle begins.

Skin cycling promotes the strategic application of products, preventing skin irritation or potentially damaging over-application, by avoiding the use of many active ingredients at once. This technique is often recommended for sensitive skin, or those keeping it simple with the minimalist trend. Just use a few products for a few days, then switch to the others in your arsenal, and repeat.

SKIN SCULPTING TECHNOLOGIES

At salons and med spas, the latest beauty technologies are making it easier than ever to sculpt skin across the face and body. Popular new technologies and tools can quickly tone and tighten targeted areas for noticeable results in less time, all without a need for surgery.

CoolSculpting technology treats the desired area by targeting and freezing skin cells in a light, painless procedure. The cooling procedure causes the fat cells to die off naturally, resulting in enhanced toning and shaping in the affected area. Results typically continue to develop in the weeks following treatment.

Often called a needle-free alternative to fillers and Botox, the Emface uses radiofrequency technology paired with high-intensity electromagnetic stimulation to boost the strengthening, firming proteins in the skin like collagen and elastin. The result: a more sculpted appearance after a minimally invasive treatment that works to build muscle and eliminate fat all at once. With no needles and no recovery time required, Emface is a top choice for keeping the skin lifted and tightened.

Also using electric frequency technology, Emsculpt body sculpting technology can tighten and tone areas of the body in just 30-minute sessions. Results are often noticed in the form of visible slimming and toning, especially around the abs and core.

DEFINED LIPS

Lips are always a top focal point of the face, but the trendiest ways to define them have looked different over the years. Today’s trends celebrate definition over volume, using lighter fillers and opting for popular treatments to enhance the natural shape of the lips. During a lip flip procedure, the provider will typically make several Botox injections to the upper part of the lips. This helps relax (“flip”) the

top lip, revealing more lip and less gum, resulting in the appearance of fuller lips without the use of added filler.

LASER SKIN THERAPY

Laser therapy can be highly targeted and used to address a wide array of skin concerns. from banishing dark spots and fine lines, to reducing the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scarring and more.

In-office laser therapies use ultra-focused lasers that can target the desired areas of the skin, removing the outer layer to reveal the healthier skin underneath. The laser’s sharp focus allows this to happen without damage to surrounding tissues. The resulting collagen stimulation and elastin production brings the added benefit of restoring volume to the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

LED LIGHT THERAPY

When it comes to anti-aging therapies, LED light therapy is almost as non-invasive as it gets. It involves using light at different wavelengths to produce targeted results for regeneration, firmness and texture. Often, a series of 20-minute treatments is recommended. Even better, the treatment

involves lying under a machine emitting LED light—a good time to relax and treat your skin all at once!

HEALTH-FOCUSED, HOLISTIC TREATMENTS

Skin health is often about glowing from the inside out. Providers are now more often implementing holistic strategies into their treatment offerings, incorporating aspects of nutrition, metabolism, rejuvenation, mental health, supplementation and more.

Boosting the results of your skin-care routine with proper supplementation can further amplify the results of your beauty regimen, all while supporting total-body wellness. Top skin-supporting supplements often include vitamins A, C and E, collagen, and sun-protective glutathione.

TREAT YOUR SKIN THIS FALL

Everyone deserves some pampering from time to time. Whether it’s from the comfort of your home, or during a visit to your aesthetician, dedicating some time to skin care (and self-care) can help you maintain glowing skin well past summertime. With a minimalist routine and a few key products and treatments, autumn skin care has never been easier!

The trendy JetPeel Facial is worth every penny. Splurge and book the 90-minute treatment for 30 extra minutes of bliss. This unique facial uses pressurized oxygen at subsonic speed to deliver nutritive serum into the dermal layers below the skin’s surface layers. The treatment is packed full with a lymphatic drainage massage and gentle exfoliation. The 90-minute treatment adds a Knesko Gold face mask and a hand and arm massage.

Insider Tip: Even if you aren’t staying at the resort, you can still enjoy the spa, which is open to the public.

Just a short drive from Shelter Island is the Cabrillo National Monument, located on Point Loma. The drive climbs to the top of the hill and follows the peninsula through the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which is starkly beautiful with the rows and rows of uniform white tombstones. Plan to spend a few hours at the monument to enjoy the museum and watch the film. Enjoy views of San Diego and Coronado before taking the short hike to the lighthouse. The monument is also famed for its tide pools along the shores of the Pacific Ocean. Even if it is not low tide, it is still worth a visit to hike along the rocky shoreline.

Insider Tip: Travel to the overflow parking lot (Lot 2) for another view. The monument is one of the premier bird watching spots in San Diego, and many birds congregate in the area below Lot 2.
