Thailand, the only Southeast Asian nation never to have been colonized by European powers, is a constitutional monarchy whose current head of state is HM Bhumibol Adulyadej. A unified Thai kingdom has existed since the mid-14th century, and Thailand was known as Siam until 1939, when it officially became the Kingdom of Thailand

Geography Thailand is the 50th largest country in the world; most nearly equal in size to Spain. Located just 15 degrees north of the equator. Thailand has a tropical climate, and temperatures typically range from 19 to 38 degrees C (66-100 F). Thailand’s largest peak, Doi Inthanon, is 2,565 meters (8,415 ft) tall. Thailand covers 510,890 sq km of land and 2,230 sq km of water. The coastline of Thailand is 3,219 km long. Thailand’s longest shared border is with Myanmar (Burma), stretching 1,800 km. Weather The weather in Thailand is generally hot and humid: typical of its location within the tropics. Generally speaking, Thailand can be divided into three seasons: “hot” season, rainy season and “cool” season, though Thailand’s geography allows visitors to find suitable weather somewhere in the country throughout the year. Popula tion The population of Thailand comprises roughly 65 million citizens, the majority of whom are ethnically Thai, though peoples of Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mon, Khmer, Burmese and Lao origin are also represented to varying degrees. Area Thailand has an approximate geographical area of 514, 000 sq km (200,000 sq miles). 1. Doi Inthanon National Park / Chiang Mai Doi Inthanon National Park, nicknamed “the roof of Thailand”, is in the Thanon Thong Chai Range, Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand. It includes Doi Inthanon, the country’s highest mountain.
The 180-square-kilometer national park in Mae Taeng district, blessed with mountainous terrains and verdant forest, is the favorite destination among cool-weather and photography lovers during the winter time. They rise to the top of Huai Nam Dang Viewpoint at Doi Kiew Lom to overlook a stunning scene when the peak of Doi Chiang Dao emerges from the sea of fog in the morningg hours. Nearby attractions include Pong Nam Ron Tha Pai (hot spring) and Namtok Mae Yen (waterfall), all located in Mae Hong Son. 1. Koh Samet / Rayong
Koh Samet is a small island around 200km south-east of Bangkok and just over 5 km off the coast of Rayong province. The island is part of the Khao Laem Ya – Koh Samet National Park though all of Koh Samet’s beaches have been developed to cater to the large stream of Bangkok residents who flock to the island each weekend. Drawn by its 14 fine, white sand beaches that feature a number of beachside bars and restaurants, Thai and foreign visitors return again and again to Koh Samet to enjoy the excellent weather on the island and appreciate its great natural beauty, home to exotic wildlife species including monkeys, hornbills, gibbons, and butterflies.

1. Koh Lipe / Satun
Koh Lipe is a small island in the Adang-Rawi Archipelago of the Strait of Malacca, in Satun Province of southwest Thailand, close to the Malaysian border. The Thai name is transliterated in many different ways into English. Lipe island was first discovered by the Chao Ley (or Sea Gypsies) who would travel from island to island in search of the best fishing in the areas to feed themselves and their tribes. The Chao Ley eventually found a permanent home on Koh Lipe and were given a grant to settle on the island’s eastern beach (Koh Lipe Sunrise Beach) and have since remained there.
2. Phi Phi Islands / Krabi Phi Phi Islands are a main attraction to Krabi and Phuket Island, and are widely considered to be amongst the most beautiful islands in the world, recently rocking to fame with the filming of the movie “The Beach” on Maya Bay. Despite the high number of visitors here, the island is still quite stunning, and the surrounding ocean and islands are still spectacular, although Maya Bay does get abit overcrowded during Peak Season. Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley are the largest, and most well known of the Phi Phi Islands. The main island of Phi Phi Don has accommodation, restaurants, dive centers, and a very vibrant nightlife! The other islands are part of the National Park and can only be seen on tours.

Koh Mai Thon / Phuket Located southeast of Phuket, Koh Mai Thon is like a dream; an island famous for its beautiful coral reefs, crystal clear water, powdery beach and laid-back ambience as great as the Maldives. The island is ideal for diving, swimming and sunbathing. A one-day trip is also provided by travel agencies, with boats leaving from Rawai Beach.
3. Similan Islands / Phang Nga Koh Similan is the largest island. The sea in the area has an average depth of 60 feet. Underwater it is full of rock formations and coral reefs in several shapes and forms, resembling such things as deer, leaves, brains, and mushrooms. Above the water are found many diverse species such as the Nicobar pigeon, mangrove monitor lizards, flying fox and more.
5. Koh Phayam / Ranong
Koh Phayam - probably the most beautiful island in Thailand This gorgeous little island is truly the undiscovered pearl of the Andaman Sea with long white sandy beaches, clear blue sea, coral reefs, it’s the perfect place to really get away from it all. The two main bays are Aow Yai , the sunset bay, and Aow Khao Kwai ( Buffalo bay ).Both bays have long curving white sandy beaches.
