필립 반덴버그 작품 속 반복과 모순 쿤 반 덴 브룩과 워우터 다비츠의 대화

Wouter Davidts (WD): 당신의 전속 갤러리인 갤러리바톤에서 2009년 사망한 필립 반덴버그의 공동 전시 큐레이팅을 요청했다. 당신이 선별한 작 품들에 대한 설명 이전에 반덴버그의 삶과 작업에 대해 간략하게 이야기 해줄 수 있는가?

Koen van den Broek (KvdB): 내가 처음 필립 반덴버그를 알게 된 것은 1990년대 중반 내가 앤트워프의 대학에서 학생으로 있을 때였다. 그는 이 미 앤트워프에서 프레드 버보츠 (Fred Bervoets)와 갤러리 즈바르터 판터 (De Zwarte Panter)를 중심으로 잘 알려져 있었다. 그의 작품은 상당히 현대적이었다. 그 새로운 거친 페인팅들은 맥락을 공유하고 있는 독일 표현주의 (Neo-Expressionism)와 함께 여전히 중요하게 여겨진다. 그의 작 업이 나를 매료 시킨 것은 그것의 자유로움과 제멋대로인 부분 때문이었다. 그러나 동시에 상당히 암울하게 비춰질 수 있다는 점이 때때로 나를 거 슬리게도 했다. 개인적인 주제들은 물론이고 그의 페인팅은 역사에 대한 참조들로 넘쳐난다.

WD: 그를 실제로 만난 적이 있나?

KvdB: 그렇다. 그를 한 번 만난 적이 있었는데 앤트워프 예술 대학 (Higher Institute for Fine Arts)의 내 스튜디오에서 였다. 사실 그 만남이 유쾌하 게 흘러가진 못했다. 내가 들어섰을 때 그는 내가 바닥에 두었던 종이 작업을 밟고 지나가고 있었다. 그는 예술 작품은 땅과 연결되어 있어야 한다고 믿었으며 그 작업들 위를 걸어가는 것이 자연스럽다 생각한 것이다. 나는 정중하게 그가 그곳을 떠나 주기를 부탁했다. 반덴버그는 자신의 시각 안에 온전하게 몰두한 사람이었으며 그 시각을 다른 작가들에게도 투영했다. 그것이, 내 생각에는 그를 개인주의자이자 외로운 사람으로 만든 것 같다.

WD: 반덴버그 작품의 비평적, 역사적 관점에서 그러한 그의 우울한 캐릭터가 상당한 비중을 차지한다고 본다. 나는 당신이 이러한 그의 성격적 특 질을 이번 전시에서 의도적으로 보여주지 않으려 했다는 사실에 놀랐다.

KvdB: 어떠한 경우에도 나는 작가 개인보다 그의 작품에서 훨씬 더 흥미로운 것을 발견하며 이는 모든 예술가들에게 적용된다고 본다. 나는 작품 이면의 개인적인 신화를 좋아하지 않는다. 게다가 현대 미술사적 맥락에서 필립 반덴버그의 다른 측면을 보여주는 것은 중요하다고 생각했다. 왜냐 하면 그것이 한 예술가의 다재 다능함, 그의 정신의 범위와 작품의 깊이에 대해 더 알게 해주기 때문이다. 나는 감히 필립 반덴버그를 마이크 켈리 (Mike Kelley), 브루스 나우만 (Bruce Nauman) 그리고 마르틴 키펜베르거 (Martin Kippenberger)와 같은 현대미술의 거장들과 비교하고자 한다.

WD: 작가로서 반덴버그를 간략하게 특징짓는다면?

KvdB: 그의 작품은 개인과 거대한 세계 사이에서 지속되는 상호작용으로 특정 지어진다. 작가로서 그는 일종의 탁구 게임을 하는 것 같은데, 즉 그 와 세계 사이의 끊임없는 게임이다. 이것은 그의 작업을 매우 개인적이게 하며 동시에 보편적이게 한다.

WD: 필립 반덴버그는 다작하는 작가였고 그의 작품 역시 방대하다. 어떻게 이번 전시에 선보일 작품들을 선정하였는가?

KvdB: 그는 엄청난 양의 페인팅을 제작하기도 하였고 드로잉, 스케치, 글쓰기도 멈추지 않았다. 이러한 수 많은 작품 속에서 나는 예술가로서 개인 적인 선택을 했다. 나는 사실 큐레이터라고 할 수 없다. 이 선택은 유동적인 객체와 그것들의 흔적들에 대한 관심에 기초하여 이뤄졌고 이는 내 개인 적 작업에서도 중요한 측면이다. 필립 반덴버그는 단어와 이미지를 통해 그의 내면 세계를 표현하려 시도했다. 때때로 그는 굉장히 직설적으로 자신 의 생각들이나 혹은 일종의 논의들을 캔버스 위에 바로 썼다. 반면에 그는 그의 생각들을 흔적, 구조, ‘A에서 B까지’에 이르는 길로서 구현하기도 하 였다. 그는 이러한 궤적들을 드러낼 수도 동시에 감출 수도 있었다. 분명 그의 방법론은 유머러스한 측면이 있다.

WD: 처음 반덴버그의 작업을 마주하는 사람들은 때로 그 거대하고 다양한 작업들이 한 사람의 생산물이라는 사실을 이해하기 어려워한다. 그는 추 상적 이미지나 독일 나치의 만자 문양을 그리기도 했고 야세르 아라파트 (Yasser Arafat)의 만화적 초상, 또는 당나귀와 정사를 나누는 남자의 모습 을 보스적 (Hieronymus Bosch-like) 회화 방식을 차용하여 묘사하기도 했다. 그는 넓은 범위의 주제뿐만 아니라 아주 다양한 양식의 페인팅을 추 구한 것이다.

KvdB: 나는 항상 같은 것을 하거나 반복에 익숙해진 예술가들을 이해하는 것에 더 큰 어려움을 겪는다. 희소성이란 종종 일종의 마케팅 계책에 불 과하다. 내게 이는 하루가 24시간으로 되어있는 것과 같이 매우 논리적이다. 만약 당신이 예술가로서 연구와 탐구에 열중한다면 그로 인해 표현 해 야 할 것이 많아진다. 많은 위대한 예술가들, 피카소 (Pablo Picasso)라든가 마티스 (Henri Matisse) 혹은 앤디 워홀 (Andy Warhol) 을 봐도 모두 방 대한 작품들을 보유하고 있다. 한번은 루치오 폰타나 (Lucio Fontana)가 그의 작업을 완성하는데 얼마나 오래 걸리냐는 질문을 받고 ‘75년’이 걸렸 다고 대답했다 한다. 내 생각에 반덴버그는 어떤 것에 지쳤을 때 그와는 반대의 것을 하기로 한 듯 보인다. 한 가지가 다른 것을 이끈 것이다. 아주 서술적인 작업을 한 후에 그는 추상적인 것으로 전환한다. 그러나 이 추상은 종종 기만적이다. 이번 전시에는 최종 형상이 마치 곧 떨어져 나갈 것 같은 진흙의 층과 유사해 질 때까지 반복적으로 여러 겹 칠해진 캔버스들이 다수 선보인다. 그 평면 위와 아래에 셀 수 없는 다른 이미지들이 놓여져 있다는 것을 인식하는 것은 중요하다. 노랑색과 주황색 단색화들 (No title , ca. 1994-2005, No title , 2004)은 온전히 페인팅에 관한 작품들이다. 몇 몇은 만자 문양이나 그가 사용하는 이미지의 다른 측면을 표면 아래에 포함하고 있다. 그것들은 전통적 해석으로 볼때 사실 단색화가 아닌 것이다. 이 작품들이 좀 더 미니멀하고 직설적인 페인팅과 함께 보여지면 완전이 다른 이야기를 생성한다. 이는 당신이 그의 작가적 여정에 대한 더 나은 이 해를 하게 이끌 것이다. 필립 반덴버그 작품의 강점은 그것의 모순에 있다. 여기, 몇몇은 종종 점으로 표현 된 파란 선으로 이루어진 좀 더 미니멀한 작업(Z.T. , 2003)을 생각해 보자. 이 선들은 즉각적으로 가속과 감속을 나타내고 동시에 방향을 재현하며 때때로 교차하여 십자가의 모양을 형성한 다. 당신은 그 작업의 긴박함과 요구를 느낄 수 있을 것이다. 그의 어떤 작품도 아주 세련되진 않다. 그는 단순히 시간이 없었던 것이다. 그가 그러한 세련된 성향을 지니고 있었을 수도 있으나 궁극적으로 우리가 느끼는 것은 단순히 이미지들을 캔버스 위에 싣겠다는 그의 충동이다.

WD: 당신은 드로잉 작품들도 이번 전시에 선보인다.

KvdB: 드로잉 작품들은 그의 페인팅의 주제를 잘 보여준다. 왜냐하면 페인팅 작품들은 자주 여러 겹 칠해졌으며 그 서사 또한 다의적이다. 아마 드 로잉 작품 속에서 다른 요소들을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 이들은 단색의 평면 아래에서 무엇이 이루어지는지를, 혹은 그 기간에 어떤 작업들이 생산 되었는지를 좀 더 분명히 밝혀줄 것이다. 그래서 이번 전시에는 2004년부터 만들어진 단 하나의 스케치북만 전시하는데 이 시기는 전시되는 대부 분의 작업이 제작된 기간이기도 하다. 이 완성된 스케치북을 전시 함으로서 나는 그의 작업 속도와 동시에 그의 열정과 치열함이 보여 지기를 기대 한다. 반덴버그는 어떤 의미에서 그냥 내버려지기를 거부한 투기견과 같았다. 그는 멈추지 않았다. 단 하나의 스케치북은 이를 보여주기에 충분해 보였으며 이는 평생에 걸친 그의 노력에 대한 모든 것을 이야기해 줄 것이라 생각한다. 또한 당신은 그가 어떤 방식으로 일했는지 알게 될 것이다. 무엇보다도 그의 드로잉에서 그의 페인팅과 동일한 과정을 마주칠 것이다. 밑의 층위가 보여지지 않을 정도로 페인팅하는 그 행위, 그 반복은 그의 드로잉에서도 분명히 드러난다. 드로잉에서도 역시 그는 흔히 같은 이미지를 계속해서 반복한다. 또한 텍스트도 발견되는데 그것들은 결국 읽혀지 진 않는다. 이것은 마치 그가 어떤 것을 말하고자 혹은 제안하고자 하지만 끝내 그러지 못하는 것처럼 보인다. 그가 이미지들을 무효화시키거나 혹 은 위장시키기를 원했던 듯하다.

WD: 이미지의 파괴는 필립 반덴버그의 작품 속에 끊임없이 반복되는 모티브이다. 그의 작업은 그가 어떤 특정한 주제를 기반으로 설립하였다가 그 가능성에 완전히 지쳐 이를 버리고 다음 것으로 넘어가는 듯한 뚜렷한 연쇄 과정으로 구성된 것처럼 보인다. 이는 마치 이것이 무엇인가를 만들어내 고 시도하기 위한 전략으로 보인다. 단, 그가 이를 너무 자주 반복하여 그의 이러한 자산을 소모해 버렸다.

KvdB: 그렇다. 필립 반덴버그는 반복 재생산의 필요성을 느꼈고 그리하여 그의 작품들은 지나치게 만져졌다. 아마도 이는 꺼내져야 할 시간이 잊혀 져 오븐 속에 검게 남겨진 비스켓의 잔재와 닮아있을 것이다. 나는 이러한 집착, 그가 일부러 발을 디딘 그 길을 보여주고 싶었다. 다른 많은 위대한 예술가들이 최소 한번은 가졌을 그 여정의 치열함은 반덴버그의 작품과 닮아 있다.

WD: 그 거대한 주제뿐 아니라, 당신은 필립 반덴버그 개인의 모습에 대한 탐색도 특별히 드러내려고 했는가? 무엇보다 반덴버그는 지치지 않고 작 업 함으로서 끊임없이 질문하는 작가였다. 그러나 한번도 그는 어떤 대답을 제시하지 않았으며 이는 그가 같은 질문을 묻고 또 묻는 데에 몰두한 것 처럼 보인다.

KvdB: 어떤 면에서 모든 위대한 작가들이 대답은 제시하지 않으며 질문만 한다고 하는 것은 일종의 상투적인 생각이다. 무엇보다도 필립 반덴버그 는 타협하지 않는 사람이었다. 젊은 작가로서 그는 이른 시기에 성공을 거두었다. 뉴욕의 갤러리에 소속되었고 국제적으로 알려질 돌파구를 만들었 다. 그러나 그것이 그가 어떤 지점에서 의식적으로 방향을 바꾸는 것을 멈추게 하지는 못하였다. 아마도 그는 지루했을지도, 아니 그가 좀 더 넓게 생각했었기 때문일 것이다. 그런데 사실 그 결정들은 전혀 반대의 결과를 맞이했다. 게다가 그의 작가 생활은 이후 빨리 위기를 맞는다. 이 과정은 작업에서나 한 인간으로서나 말 그대로 많은 상처를 남기게 된다. 하지만 내가 특히 중요하다고 생각하는 것은 그가 그의 위치를 오랫동안 지켜 왔 다는 것이다. 그는 미술 시장과 만연한 유행에 양보하는 일을 거부했다. 예술가로서, 다른 선택은 없었던 것이다.

페인터의 길 필립 반덴버그에 대하여 예서 반 윈든

“페인터의 길은 뱀처럼 구불구불하고 동맥처럼 갈라져있다.” 필립 반덴버그, ‘우리 안 그의 길은 그의 손을 피로 붉게 물들이는 것이다.’, 1998

이번 전시인 ‘추상 회화 (Abstract Works)’는 필립 반덴버그의 작품들을 전작적 관점에서 조망하는, 아마도 불가능에 가까운 시도가 될 회고전의 형 식을 취하지 않는다. 70년대 중반부터 그가 사망한 2009년까지 활발하게 활동한 벨기에 출신의 페인터이자 소묘가였던 반덴버그는 다양한 스타일 과 형식적 주안점들을 결부시킨 작가적 성취를 이끌어 냈다. 그는 이 두 요소를 시리즈나 연속적인 작업 안에 녹여내고 때로는 점진적으로 그들을 변형시켜 유기적 흐름 속에서 서로를 따르도록 한다. 다른 한편으로 그는 예술적, 개인적 사고의 재설정의 과정 안에서 돌연 그들을 파괴하고 새로 운 것을 다시 시작한다. 그의 예술적 발전은 발튀스 (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola)를 연상시키는 부드러운 색감과 사실적 묘사로 이루어진, 종종 어딘가 체제 전복적이고 기묘한 그의 초기 작품에서부터 점진적이나 비정형의 방식으로 발생된 단어로 뒤덮힌 후기 페인팅에까지 이른다. 양식적 관심은 새로운 형태가 부 상하는 순간 필연적으로 멈추게 되고 구상적이고 추상적 성향은 번갈아 가며 서로를 보완한다. 또 모티브들은 긴 간격을 두고 드러내어지며, 한번이 아니라 여러 번 혹은 끊임없이 반복해서 칠해진 각각의 작품들은 작가로서의 여정의 오래된 흔적들을 연상시키는 기제들을 압축하고 있는 듯 하다. 아주 민감한 성향을 지녔으며 적극적인 사회적 개입을 주저하지 않았던 반덴버그는, 그가 결국 굴복해야 했던 냉혹한 현실 세계와의 길고 긴 비극 적 투쟁 이후 그의 내면에서 일어나고 퍼져나간 분노를 실제적으로 묘사하기 위해 다양한 방법들을 연구하고 찾아냈다. 쿤 반 덴 브룩 (Koen van den Broek)은 일종의 다채로운 공간을 제시하는 듯한 추상 회화들을 특별히 선별했다. 연대적으로 볼 때 이 전시는 추상 회화의 서막을 여는 2개의 무제 작품이 제작된 1991년에서 시작한다. 두텁고 불규칙적인 오일 안료의 층은 물질로 된 유형의 장을 이뤄낸다. 이 무 거운 페인트 작업으로부터 형상의 흔적들이 일어나며 그것은 마치 오일 안료를 왜곡하고 공격하는 부식성이 강한 물체로부터 지워진 것처럼 보인 다. 이 명멸하는 형체와 선들은 어떤 가능성도 제약하지 않으며 수 없이 떠오르는 상상을 우리에게 안긴다.

영화, <길 위의 오이디푸스, 페인터> (A painter as Oedipus on the road , 2005)에서 반덴버그는 당시 30년이 된 그의 예술 활동을 되새기며 “극심 한 위기 때문에 주기적으로 파괴되어 한편으로는 소진의 결과였고 다른 한편으로는 현재의 주제로부터 더 나아가고자 하는 불만족의 결과였던” 그 의 작업을 특징짓는 진화가 어떻게 이뤄졌는지 설명한다. 생애 내내 반덴버그는 직업적, 애정적, 정치적, 존재론적인 상황들로 인한 극심한 우울증 으로 고통 받았다. 동시에 이는 그의 예술적 발전을 위한 결정적 순간들이기도 했다. 뿐만 아니라 그는 개인적인 실패감과 죄책감에 주기적으로 시 달렸다. 그는 하나의 스타일로부터 벗어나 다른 스타일로 옮겨가기 위해 자주 오래된 작업들을 파괴하고 새로운 시작을 위해 원래 있던 작업들 위 에 다시 페인팅하는 것을 피할 수 없는 생존 본능으로, 필수적인 것으로 간주했다. 영화의 장면에서 반덴버그는 작업의 재점화를 시도하기 위해, 그 의 드로잉북을 훑어 보고 재검토하며 새로운 형태와 상징의 갈망 속에서 원래 존재하던 모티브를 택해 그것을 발전, 확장시키며 직감적으로 실험한 다. 미술사에서 가장 중요한 상징이자 1981년 초부터 주기적으로 그가 그의 작품에 포함시킨 십자가의 형상을 거론하며, 그는 이것이 차후 여러 갈 래로 형상화될 기제였다는 사실을 밝힌다. 즉, 그 앞에 새로운 길을 열게 된 것이다. 이번 전시에 소개된 독일 나치의 만자 문양을 포함하고 있는 작품들도 이와 유사한 기원을 갖고 있다. 연작인 <Mama swastika revisited > (20022003, 2002-2003, 2003-2004)를 자세히 살펴보면 만자 문양과 움직이는 인간의 모습이 융합된 것을 발견할 수 있다. 그들은 땅속 요정처럼 뾰족 한 모자를 쓰고 있다. 나치의 상징인 만자 문양과 결합된, 종종 집안의 힘들고 더러운 일들을 도맡아 하는 것으로 묘사되는 서구 전설속의 이 온순한 생명체의 차용은 순종적인 인간에게 내재된 비인간적이고 파괴적인 성향을 은유한다. 전쟁의 잔학한 행위들 속에서 고통스레 마주할 수 있는 이러 한 진실은 반덴버그가 깊이 심취하고 주제화 하였던 정치의 이면이다. 반면 근본적으로 우주의 에너지와 성장, 삶 자체를 상징하는 고대 일부 종교 의 상징을 연상시키는 역(逆)만자 문양들도 동시에 발견된다. 다시 말해, 반덴버그의 작품에 자주 등장하는 파괴와 생성의 개념이 조심스럽게 균형 을 이루고 있는 것이다. 페인터로서 반덴버그의 다채로운 스타일의 범주는 이번에 전시된 작품들의 제작 시기이기도 한 2004년 부터 쓰여진 비망록을 통해 깊이 이해될 수 있다. 작가는 작품의 형식을 온전하게 바꾸는 것이 얼마나 어려웠는지 회고한다. “....왜냐하면 형상은 주제를 가리나 주제는 형상을 가리지 않으므 로, 또한 작품의 내용을 보는 관점은 끊임없이 바뀌므로[...], 사실 그 내용 자체는 거의 바뀌지는 않는다. 즉 우리의 유전자 속에 존재하는 인간 조건 은 실질적으로 바뀌지 않는다.” 이는 반덴버그가 그의 작업 안에 형체가 곧 기능인 숨은 내용들을 갖고 있다는 것을 인지했다는 사실뿐 아니라 안정 적이고 독립된 인간의 조건이 그의 작품에 적합한 소재라 선언했음을 나타내며 이는 상당히 의미심장한 진술이라 할 수 있다. 반덴버그는 자신과 유 사한 정신 세계를 보인 셀린 (Louis-Ferdinand Céline), 아르토 (Antonin Artaud), 베켓 (Samuel Beckett)과 같은 방식으로 인간의 조건을 이해했 던 것이다. 다시 말해, 생의 부조리에 둘러싸인 개인은 자신의 내부에서 무한히 고독하다는 생각이다.

이 실존적 성향은 그의 추상 작품에서 덜 분명해 보이나, 작품 표면에 쓰여진 단어들이 그러하듯 반복되는 구상적 세부 요소는 그의 존재론적 개입 을 상기시킨다. 이는 그의 작품의 주된 모티브를 형성하고 현재와 과거 또는 보편적으로 존재하는 개인과 집단 사이의 연관성을 증명한다. 만자 문 양과 장화 형상 연작 <Cycle ‘Le départ’ > (2005-2007) 그리고 크리스탈 모양의 계단 <No more life no more > (2004) 작업은 이의 적절한 예라고 할 수 있다. 동시에 반덴버그는 각각 다른 추상 작업들은 인간의 재현이나 초상이며, 지도들은 개인과 사회, 국가 사이의 관계망, 연관성, 거리 또는 허공을 보여주는 것으로 간주될 수 있다고 말한다. 이번 전시에서 반덴버그의 이러한 실존주의적 성향은 종종 공간에 대한 관심이나 동작의 개념으로 연결된다. 예를 들어 4개의 무제 작품인 흰색 위의 푸른색 페인팅 <blue-on-white paintings > (2000-2003)은 도로나 좁은 길, 선로 혹은 고속도로 를 제시하는 듯한 선들을 보여준다. 마치 작가가 결코 그를 안전하게 탈출하게끔 허락 하지 않는 무언가로부터 거리를 두는 것처럼, 색감의 대조는 멀 고 거칠고 차갑다. 그의 반응은? 한때 열정적이었으나 냉랭한, 절박했고 희망적이었으나 끝내 헛된, 선명한 색조의 파랑인 것이다. 텍스트 위주의 수채화 시리즈 <No more life no more >는 실험적인 직선의 형상과 쓰여진 상징들을 융합해 흡사 주문 같은 무형의 문장들을 연필 선 과 틀로 이루어진 정밀한 별자리로 변모시키며, 삶의 끝 (No more life)에 대해 이야기한다. 또한 이는 반덴버그가 사각틀의 형태를 벗어난 표면에 좀 더 자유롭게 부유하는 단어들만 그리기 시작하는 시기인, 그의 작품 활동의 마지막 단계의 징후를 보인다. 언어를 페인팅과 드로잉의 구성 요소 로서 사용함은 반덴버그의 문학에 대한 평소의 관심과 경탄해 마지 않을 그의 저술들과 관련되어 있다. 뿐만 아니라 언어야 말로 그 너머의 진전은 없을 만큼 표현의 최종 형태일 수 있다는 점에 동의하고 보면, 작품의 주제에 적합한 형체를 찾기 위한 그의 탐색을 이해하게끔 한다. 이번 전시의 다수의 작품에서 보여지는 교차하는 장화와 길의 형상은 반덴버그의 방랑벽과 거의 틀림없이 연관되어 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이 는 예술적 막힘으로부터 벗어나고자 했으며 개인적 삶의 존재론적 혼돈을 정복하고자 했던 작가 자신의 욕구와의 타협으로 보여져야 할 것이다. 그 는 페인팅과 드로잉만이 그의 저항의 방식이었다고 말한다. 예술은 그의 운명이자 견뎌야 할 십자가처럼 보인다. 이런 맥락에서 반덴버그가 겐트 (Ghent)의 회화 박물관에서 히에로니무스 보스 (Hieronymus Bosch)의 작품, <십자가를 진 예수> (Christ Carrying the Cross , 1516)를 본 10대의 어 린 자신을 회상한 것은 의미가 깊다. 그는 그 작품에 완전히 매료되었고 그 조우는 결정적으로 그를 화가의 길로 이끈다. 이는 놀라운 페인팅과 드로 잉으로 풍성한 그의 작품 세계를 잉태하는 계기가 되었으나 동시에 그 길은 작가 개인의 슬픔의 길 (Via Dolorosa)로 보여지기도 한다.

Note: ‘추상 회화 (Abstract Works)’에 선보이는 다수의 작품들이 때로 실존적 고독감으로부터 유발된 작가의 우울증과 관련한 맥락에서 읽혀질 수도 있 다. 그러나 동시에 이 작품들은 그러한 혼란에 대응하는 여러 사건들로부터 발생하기도 한다. 2006년부터 쓰여진 일기는 이렇게 시작한다. “조각난 인간에게는 단 하나의 해결책이, 단 하나의 집착이 있다. 스스로를 다시 온전한 하나로 만들겠다는. 화가인 나는 이미지와 신호와 캔버스의 결합을 통해 이를 이루고자 한다.” 2005년에서 2008년 사이에 제작된 무제 작업의 텍스트는 또한 이렇게 말한다. ‘그들에게/그것을 부숴라/그것을 불러오 라/나에게.’ 이 작품은 다양한 의미론적 관점에서 퍼즐과도 같다. 이 문구들을 재배치하면 이러한 읽을 수 있는 문장을 만들 수 있다. ‘그것을 그들에 게 부숴라. 그것을 나에게 불러오라.’ 캔버스의 양단에 놓인 ‘그들’과 ‘나’의 위치는 한 사회, 세계 안에서 ‘조각난 인간’이 느끼는 일종의 어긋남을 나 타낸다. 또한 이 세계는 중간에 쓰여진 ‘부수다’와 ‘불러오다’로 설명 될 수 있는데 이는 곧, 새로운 삶은 단지 창조될 수만 있으며 새로운 페인팅은 단지 ‘되찾아’올 수 있을 뿐이라는 것이다. 이는 마치 반덴버그가 과거를 뒤로하고 떠나며 이전에 제작했던 작품을 파괴했던 것과 같다. 길, 움직이는 발, 그리고 계단의 형상은 구원을 향한 예술가 혹은 인간의 긴 여정을 나타낼 뿐 아니라 탈출을 의미하기도 하는 듯 하다. 그의 공적, 혹은 사적인 삶에서 반덴버그는 끝내 달아나지 못하였다. 이와는 반대로, 그는 그가 거꾸로 된 부당함이라고 인식하였던 인간 관계나 일에서 주로 불리하게 작용한 것들에 정면으로 맞섰다. 그러나 그는 그의 내면 세계로부터 결코 탈출하지는 못하였다. 그의 서신 속에 한번 이상 언급된 “나는 내 작업실에 앉아있다. 모든 나의 악마들이 나를 둘러싸고 있다.” 는 말은 결국 고통 속의 울부짖음이었던 것이다.

Repetition and contradiction in the work of Philippe Vandenberg Koen van den Broek in conversation with Wouter Davidts

Wouter Davidts (WD): Gallery Baton, your gallery in Korea, has invited you to curate an exhibition of work by Philippe Vandenberg, who died in 2009. Could you first tell us a little bit about Philippe Vandenberg’s life and work, before elaborating on your selection?

Koen van den Broek (KvdB): I first became acquainted with Philippe Vandenberg in the mid-1990s, while a student at the Academy in Antwerp. He was well known on the Antwerp scene, which revolved around Fred Bervoets and the gallery De Zwarte Panter. His work was very current. The new wild style of painting, with the Neue Wilden in Germany as the main exponents, was still very prominent. His work charmed me, because it was unruly and free.

At the same time, it annoyed me sometimes, because it could also be very melancholy. In addition to the personal themes, many of his paintings were loaded with historical references.

WD: Did you meet the artist in person?

KvdB: Indeed. I met Philippe Vandenberg once, in my studio at the HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts) in Antwerp.

But the meeting did not end well. Upon entering the room, he stepped across the works on paper that I had placed on the floor. Because he felt that an artwork needed to be connected to the earth, he thought it was normal to walk on top of them. I politely asked him to leave. Philippe Vandenberg was completely absorbed with his own vision, which he also projected onto other artists. That made him, I think, an individualist and a loner.

WD: In the critical and historical reception of Philippe Vandenberg’s oeuvre, his melancholic character receives a great deal of attention. I am amazed by the fact that you have deliberately avoided showing this side of his personality in the exhibition.

KvdB: In any case, I always find the work more interesting than the individual, and this holds true for all artists.

I don’t like the mystification of the person behind the work. Moreover, I think it is important to show a different side to Philippe Vandenberg in an international context, because it says more about the versatility of the artist, the scope of his mind, and the depth of his work. I dare to compare Philippe Vandenberg with artists such as Mike Kelley, Bruce Nauman or Martin Kippenberger, all of whom have very extensive oeuvres.

WD: Can you characterize, in a few sentences, Philippe Vandenberg as an artist?

KvdB: His work is distinguished by a continuous interaction between the individual and the wider world.

As an artist, he plays a kind of table tennis, a constant game of ping-pong between himself and the world at large.

This makes his work both highly personal and universal at the same time.

WD: Philippe Vandenberg was a prolific painter, and his oeuvre is substantial. How did you begin making a selection for the exhibition?

KvdB: Even though he painted a great deal, he never stopped drawing, sketching and writing. From this abundance of work, I made a personal selection, as an artist. I’m not really a curator. The selection is based on traces, on the idea of being on the move – an aspect that is also important in my own work. Philippe Vandenberg tried to express his psychological universe through words and images. Sometimes, he did this very literally, by writing his thoughts, or certain arguments, directly onto the canvas. But he also expressed his ideas as constructions, as traces, as paths that lead ‘from A to B’. He could reveal these trajectories but, at the same time, could also conceal them.

There is undoubtedly a humorous side to his methodology.

WD: When people first become acquainted with the work of Philippe Vandenberg, they sometimes find it difficult to understand that this large and diverse oeuvre is the product of just one person. He painted works with swastikas and abstract images, as well as cartoonish paintings depicting Yasser Arafat and Bosch-like scenes of men fucking donkeys. He not only pursued a wide range of themes, but also adopted many different styles of painting.

KvdB: I find it harder to understand artists who always do the same thing, or who succumb to repetition.

Scarcity is often nothing more than a kind of marketing ploy. To me, it’s extremely logical: a day consists of twentyfour hours. If, as an artist, you immerse yourself in research and explore everything, then there is simply a lot to convey. Many great artists, think of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse or Andy Warhol, have considerable oeuvres.

When Lucio Fontana once asked how long it took to make his work, he replied, “seventy-five years”.

I think Philippe Vandenberg often tired of things, and then decided to do the very opposite. One thing led to another.

After he had produced very narrative works, he switched to abstraction. But this abstraction is often deceptive.

The exhibition contains a number of canvases that were painted over multiple times, until the final image came to resemble a layer of mud that looks as though it could be scraped off. It is important to also realize that countless other images lie above and below the surface. The yellow and orange monochromes (No title, ca. 1994-2005, No title, 2004) are all about paintings. Some contain swastikas underneath, or another aspect of his imagery (No title, 19942004). They are not actually monochromes in the classic sense of the word.

When you show these works in conjunction with paintings that have a fresher and more minimal aspect, a different story emerges. You gain a better understanding of the artist’s quest. The strength of Philippe Vandenberg’s work lies in its contradictions. It is as though he is saying: if you kill the demons, then there can be no more angels.

Here, I am thinking about the rather minimal works with the blue lines, some of which are dotted (Z.T., 2003).

The lines simultaneously represent acceleration and deceleration, as well as direction: they occasionally intersect and form the shape of a crucifix. You feel the need and the urgency of the paintings. None of his work is very polished.

He simply didn’t have the time. He might have had this inclination, but ultimately you feel his compulsion to simply get the image onto the canvas.

WD: You have also made a selection of drawings.

KvdB: The drawings reveal a great deal about the subject matter of the paintings. Because the canvases were painted over so often, the stories are multi-layered. You can discover the different facets by looking at the drawings.

They illuminate a lot about what is going on beneath the monochrome surface, or in the period during which the work was created. I am only showing one sketchbook, therefore, dating from 2004 – this is also the era from

which most of the works in the exhibition date. By presenting a complete sketchbook, I wish to show the speed at which he worked, as well as his passion and intensity. Philippe Vandenberg was something of a pit bull, in that he refused to let go. He kept on going. A single sketchbook is rich enough in its own right, and it will tell you everything about his lifetime’s endeavour. You will discover his way of working. In the drawings, after all, you encounter the same processes as in his paintings. The act of painting over the canvas until the bottom layer becomes invisible, the repetition, are also evident in his drawings. In these, too, he often works over the same image again and again. You find texts, but ultimately they are illegible. It is as though he wishes to speak or propose something, but at the same time, is unable to do so. He seems to want to nullify, or camouflage, the image.

WD: The destruction of the image is a recurring motif in Philippe Vandenberg’s work. His oeuvre seems to consist of distinct series in which he builds upon a specific theme, completely exhausts its possibilities, and then abandons it and moves onto the next thing. It is as though this was a strategy through which to try and formulate something.

Only he did it so often, that he consumed his resources.

KvdB: Indeed. Philippe Vandenberg felt the need to over-formulate, so that the work became overdone.

Perhaps it is akin to the blackened remains of the biscuit that you forgot to take out of the oven. I want to show the obsession, and the roads down which he purposefully trod. The path that Philippe Vandenberg took was so intense that a great many artists have, or once had, an affinity with his work.

WD: In addition to the larger themes, is it true that you particularly want to show the searching figure of Philippe Vandenberg? After all, he was an artist who, by incessantly working, was constantly asking questions. But he never formulated a reply, and seems to have been preoccupied with asking the same questions over and over again.

KvdB: In a sense, it is a cliché that goes for all great artists: asking questions, but not providing the answers.

More importantly, Philippe Vandenberg was uncompromising. As a young artist, he had immediate success.

He broke through internationally and was represented by a gallery in New York. But that did not stop him from radically changing direction at a certain point – perhaps because he was bored, but more likely because he had thought more widely. Yet this decision was greeted with a huge amount of opposition. Moreover, his career crashed shortly afterwards. That process left many scars, both literally, in the work, and also in the man.

But what I find particularly significant is that he did not forsake his position for a long time.

He refused to make concessions to the market or the prevailing trends. As an artist, you have no other choice.

The painter’s way On Philippe Vandenberg, Abstract Works Jesse van Winden

“The painter’s way is sinuous like a snake, branched like arteries.”

Philippe Vandenberg, ‘On his way in a cage is a man, his hands red’, 1998 Abstract Works does not present a retrospective of Philippe Vandenberg’s oeuvre in its entirety, which would be a nigh on impossible task. Active from the mid-seventies until his death in 2009, the Belgian painter and draughtsman brought forth an evolution that concatenates a variety of styles and formal emphases. He elaborated on these in cycles and series, sometimes transforming them gradually, allowing them to follow each other in organic flows, but at other times abruptly breaking with them and, in a movement of artistic and personal recalibration, starting anew.

Vandenberg’s artistic development, from soft-hued, realistic, sometimes slightly absurd and subversive early work, which is reminiscent of Balthus (Balthasar Klossowski de Rola), to the word-pervaded last paintings, occurred in a gradual but non-linear way: stylistic interests come to a grinding halt after which new forms arise; figurative and abstract tendencies alternate and complement one other; motifs resurface after long intervals, and individual works might encapsulate the remainders of much older traces of the artist’s journeys, having been painted over not just once, but sometimes again and again. A deeply sensitive and socially engaged artist, Vandenberg searched for, and found, many different ways to depict the reality that raged inside his troubled mind and unfolded beyond, in the cruel world as he perceived it, and to which he eventually, after a long and tragic struggle, succumbed.

Koen van den Broek has chosen, instead, to make a selection of abstract works, in particular those that seem to suggest various sorts of space. In terms of the chronology, the exhibition begins with two untitled works from 1991 that form a prelude to Abstract Works. Their thick, irregular layers of impasto oil paint establish a tangible field: that of the material. Out of this heavy paintwork, traces of figures emerge; they look as though they have been erased with a corrosive substance that has blistered and distorted the oil paint. The flickering shapes and lines leave the imagination plenty to contrive, and offer nothing by way of constraint.

Two large paintings, both two metres square and dating from 1995, are similarly foregrounded in their materiality.

The first, Grande noire I (1992-1995), is as black as an oil slick and as rough as the furrows of a ploughed field – a connotation that recalls the desolate landscapes of Anselm Kiefer, with whom Vandenberg felt a deep affinity.

The surface relief is heavily accentuated, and yet there is movement within, a turmoil that can be seen, sensed, and almost set in motion. Vandenberg considered good artworks to be swirling, spinning vortexes that sucked him into their very heart. About one of his works, he commented: “It’s a painting that swirls. For me, a painting has to do this.

Like a spiral that sucks you in. A painting that swirls is one that looks back at me. It sucks me in. I can step into it.”

The second, Het zevende zegel II (The Seventh Seal II, 1995), refers to the moment in the Apocalypse when the mountains collapse and the earth is drowning in blood. Jesus breaks the seventh and last seal on the scroll that will reveal the Lord’s ultimate truth – and heaven falls silent. Although not a religious man, Vandenberg often took inspiration from the Bible, possibly because it binds both personal devotion and universal tragedy on a culturally shared scale. Indeed, it was during this period that Vandenberg painted many works in his own blood. Transcending all conventional materials, blood seemed to be at once the most individual and most collective matter, the most appropriate, perhaps, to fulfil one of his very own edicts: “The essence of artistry is to bring spirit out of matter.”

The later works connote the spaces of labyrinths, maps, pathways, grids, ladders, or geometrical landscapes.

The pith of what was to be but a brief essay lies, however, in the non-abstract that is sheltered within the abstract.

Not only is it possible to discern concrete figurative elements, but one also becomes aware of the potential for a vast landscape of subject matter to be revealed. The themes might not be immediately apparent, but they can be easily discovered through Vandenberg’s countless writings and the documentaries about his work.

In the film A painter as Oedipus on the road (2005), Vandenberg reviews his career, which spanned three decades at that point, and explains how the evolution that characterizes his work “is regularly broken by heavy crises which, on the one hand, are a result of exhaustion, and on the other hand, dissatisfaction with how to go further with my current motif.” Throughout his life, Vandenberg suffered from severe depressions that seem to have been triggered by romantic, professional, political or existential circumstances. Equally, these often proved to be decisive moments for his artistic development. Furthermore, he seems to have been regularly plagued by feelings of personal failure and guilt. He deemed it necessary, as an inevitable survival instinct, perhaps, to depart from one style and move on to another, often destroying old work and later painting over existing pieces in search of a new beginning.

In the remainder of this scene, Vandenberg browses through a sketchbook of drawings and recounts that, when

attempting to reignite his work, and in a quest for new forms and emblems, he tends to take up existing motifs, develop and expand them and experiment intuitively. Referring to the crucifix, one of the most significant symbols in the history of art, and which he regularly incorporated within his work from as early as 1981, he reveals how he came upon the device of a labyrinthine landscape. It opened up a new pathway before him.

The paintings with swastikas in Abstract Works share a similar genesis. Looking closely at the configurations in the cycle ‘Mama swastika revisited’ (2002-2003, 2002-2003, 2003-2004), one witnesses the fusion of a cross-shape with human figures in motion. They wear pointed hats, like gnomes. When considering the swastika as a symbol of Nazism, these good-hearted, submissive creatures – who in legends and fairy tales do the hard (or dirty) work in domestic settings – are a metaphor for the inhumanly destructive nature of the obedient individual. This truth, which can be so painfully witnessed in the atrocities of war, was a political constant that greatly preoccupied Vandenberg. But there are also swastikas in which the arms turn counter clockwise, which remind us of the ancient religious tradition of the emblem, which originally symbolised notions such as universal energy, growth and life itself.

Destruction and creation are thus, as they so often are in Vandenberg’s work, carefully balanced.

Vandenberg’s versatile stylistic range can be further understood through a journal entry from 2004, the period from which most of the works in the exhibition date. The artist reflects on the difficulty of changing one’s style completely: “...because the image covers the subject and not vice versa and because, as the view of the content continually changes [...], the content itself seldom does: I mean the human condition, which is in our genes and practically unalterable.” This not only indicates that Vandenberg perceived his works to have a concealed content, of which their form is a function – which is a bold enough statement in its own right – but it also proclaims ‘the human condition’, singular and stable, as the proper subject of his oeuvre. Vandenberg understood the human condition in much the same way as his kindred spirits Céline (Louis-Ferdinand Céline), Artaud (Antonin Artaud) and Beckett (Samuel Beckett). Namely, that one was infinitely alone inside oneself, surrounded by the absurdity of life.

This existential tendency may be less obvious in his abstract works, but the recurring figurative details remind us of his engagement, as do the words that are inscribed upon their surfaces. These form a leitmotif in the artist’s oeuvre and testify to the connection between the individual and the collective – present, past, or universal. Swastikas, boots (Cycle ‘Le départ’), and the crystal-shaped stairways of the No more life no more series (2004) are pertinent examples. At the same time, Vandenberg once confided to his intimates that different abstract works could be considered as representations of mankind, portraits as it were, or maps that show networks, connections, distances and voids – between individuals, people, or nations. In Abstract Works, Vandenberg’s existentialism often connects with spatial interests and the notion of movement. Four untitled blue-on-white paintings (2000-2003), for example, show lines that suggest roads, paths, tracks or highway lanes. The contrast in the colours is cold, harsh, distancing, as though the artist is attempting to disengage and detach himself from something that will never allow him to escape unscathed. His reaction? A vivid hue of blue that is at once passionate and chilly, vainly optimistic and desperate.

The text-based watercolours in the No more life no more series announce an end to life (‘no more life’), and incorporate mantra-like sentences that morph into precise constellations of pencil lines and frames – fusing experimental rectilinear forms with written symbolism. They also foreshadow the last phase in Vandenberg’s oeuvre, not covered in this exhibition, when he started to paint nothing but words, which he allowed to float in freer, less rectangular, spatial environments. The establishment of language as a constituent element of painting and drawing reminds us of Vandenberg’s interest in literature and of his own estimable writing, as well as his search for the right forms for his themes – language may be the ultimate form of expression, beyond which there is no further development.

The boots and the paths that criss-cross multiple works in this exhibition – even if they are almost certainly related to Vandenberg’s wanderlust – should be seen in dialogue with his need to move beyond artistic blockades, but to also conquer the existential turbulence in his life. Painting and drawing were his only modes of resistance, he claimed.

Art seemed to be his destiny, his cross to bear. It is meaningful that the first painting Vandenberg remembers seeing – as an adolescent boy – was Hieronymus Bosch’s Christ Carrying the Cross (1516) in the Museum of Fine Arts, Ghent. He was mesmerized, and the encounter transformed him into a painter forever. It also set him on the path that led to the creation of a rich oeuvre of stunning paintings and drawings, but one that can also be viewed as his personal Via Dolorosa.

Note: The majority of the pieces in Abstract Works can be seen in the context of the artist’s depressions, which were often triggered by feelings of existential loneliness. But at the same time, works emerged from these episodes that hold their own against the turmoil. A diary entry from 2006 reads: “The man in pieces has only one solution, only one obsession: to make himself whole again. The painter – as I am – achieves this through the unity of image, sign and canvas.” The text on an untitled work (ca. 2005-2008) reads: ‘To them / Break it / Bring it / To me’. The latter work presents itself as a puzzle on different semantic levels. By rearranging the phrases, it is possible to create a legible sentence: ‘break it to them, bring it to me’. The positions of ‘them’ and ‘me’ at the extreme edges of the canvas indicates the sense of dislocation that the ‘man in pieces’ feels from the surrounding social world, which provides an explanation for the ‘breaking’ and the ‘bringing’ that are written in-between: a new life can only be created, and a new painting can only be ‘retrieved’ – as Vandenberg saw it – after leaving the past life behind, after destroying the old work.

Roads, feet in motion and staircases not only represent the painter’s long road to redemption, or that of mankind, but also seem to reference escape. In his public and personal life, Vandenberg never fled. On the contrary, he confronted what he perceived as injustice headfirst, which often worked to his disadvantage in terms of business (and relationships). From his inner world, however, Vandenberg could never escape. “I’m sitting here in my studio, and all my demons are surrounding me ”is the cry of distress that he would utter more than once in his personal correspondence.

Philippe Vandenberg was a prominent Belgian painter, whose oeuvre presents a series of radical stylistic and thematic shifts, reflecting both a personal trajectory and responses to varying socio-cultural changes. He cultivated an explicitly nomadic philosophy, establishing an image of the artist as a restless drifter defined by the most sweeping of existential choices. For Vandenberg, each new image demanded the destruction of the previous one, the ultimate consequence of his self-declared ‘kamikaze’ attitude, an approach that explains the many breaks in his oeuvre as well as the important and recurrent themes of mobility and movement. Central to his vision was the need to turn matter into spirit and paint into light, to transform personal anecdotes into a painterly reality. This notion was exemplified by the artist’s gradual process of interiorization, and the conscious abandoning of virtuosity and material ballast in favour of sobriety and fragility. Thematically, Philippe Vandenberg combined a highly personal mythology and subject matter with a heightened sensibility for urgent societal themes, employing a number of recurring visual motifs throughout his career.

After briefly studying Literature and the History of Art, Vandenberg graduated in 1976 with a degree in painting from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. Throughout the seventies, he dedicated himself successfully to the art of painting, mainly producing figurative works depicting women. His early style tended to be hyperrealistic, and was influenced by a myriad of painterly and literary sources. Although painters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Gustave Van de Woestijne initially informed his work, he discovered Abstract Expressionism on an influential trip to New York City in 1978. The works of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline, in particular, caused him to reflect differently on the use of space in painting. In 1979, he encountered the works of Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the beginning of a longstanding dialogue with the Dutch master’s oeuvre. During a 1980 trip to the Prado in Madrid, Vandenberg found further affinity with the works of Velázquez (Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez), El Greco and Goya (Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes). After each artistic meeting, he adopted a brilliant visual style informed by these encounters, as a way of measuring his work against the masters of painting.

The cycle Studie voor een Kruisiging (Study for a Crucifixion, 1981) marks the culmination of this formative period.

These works were selected for the prestigious Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belge and exhibited at the Palais des Beaux Art in Brussels. They are proof of Vandenberg’s undeniable mastery of the medium, a virtuosity that the artist deliberately moved away from.

From the 1980s onwards, Philippe Vandenberg’s work was increasingly defined by deconstruction — a radical break with his earlier, more classically figurative period. In the series of grey and black diptychs Paren (Pairs), Schervenschilderijen (Splinter Paintings) and Kruisigingen (Crucifixions), 1980-1981, he discarded all of the figurative elements of his earlier paintings, only to move towards a new kind of violent form in series such as Gevechten (Fights), Offers (Sacrifices) and Onthoofdingen (Decapitations), 1983-1985. During this time, Vandenberg temporarily move d to Paris and met the Belgian novelist and poet Hugo Claus, which resulted in the collaborative artist’s book Gezegden (Sayings, 1986) the first of many dialogues with outstanding literary figures. In 1986, Philippe Vandenberg exhibited for the first time at the Denise Cadé Gallery in New York. Following his entry into the American art world, the Guggenheim Museum purchased one of his paintings, heralding a period of artistic prosperity that was defined by large, expressive and colourful abstract paintings that were almost devoid of violence. During this period, Philippe Vandenberg was hailed as one of Belgium’s most successful contemporary artists with exhibitions in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, United States and Japan.

Touched by the impact of significant global events, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the oppression of the student uprising on the Tiananmen Square, 1989 formed a turning point in Vandenberg’s oeuvre. Political themes started to play a prominent role in his work. The artist’s stance was extremely critical, which resulted in a highly confrontational metaphorical language marked by striking visual motifs, such as the swastika and the dollar sign, symbolizing both omnipresent materialism and ideological impasse. Vandenberg painted a laughing Yasser Arafat, a provocative representation of the Palestinian politician — Arafat as embodiment of the ultimate resistance of the einzelgänger (loner). Given its uncompromising subject matter, however, this series was fiercely criticized at the time, something that haunted the artist for the rest of his career. Processes of radical intensification — impulsive artistic shifts brought about by intensified intellectual inquiries — progressively characterised his work. During this phase, Vandenberg also conceptualized his first book of drawings, a new form of diary-like expression that would prove a more direct medium for the artist, and one that would become increasingly important over the years.

During a subsequent period (1990-1994), Vandenberg mainly returned to themes of personal suffering, and painted pietas and crucifixions. He immersed himself deeply in biblical narratives, notably the Book of Job and the Apocalypse of John, mixing scriptural visual motifs with references to the Western literary and visual tradition.

This resulted in Job XIII, 12, a major solo-exhibition at the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (Museum of Contemporary Art, now S.M.A.K, 1995) in Ghent. 1995 also constituted a symbolic ‘zero point’ for Philippe Vandenberg, ushering in a new artistic beginning. Works such as Het zevende zegel (The Seventh Seal, 1994-1995) consist of small panels sparsely painted in oil, watercolour, gouache and blood. Like his drawings, these paintings gradually turned into an ensemble of pieces. Language — more specifically the use of words — became central to the work, resulting in word-images, a visual kind of scripture, with the paintings now unambiguously representing the thing that they reference. This period further signified a steady process of interiorization, marked by the artist distancing himself from painterly matter through the use of watercolour and blood, a remarkably lighter — less layered — way of applying paint to the surface, and an increased interest in the art of writing.

Visually and thematically rich, the period from 1996 until 2003 resulted in extremely layered paintings. Mostly abstract backgrounds form the foundation for stark figurative depictions, in which words and sentences are fully integrated as pictorial elements. The work of this period was inspired by, among other things, the Flemish Primitives, and contains brutal depictions of human cruelty. Centred on philosophical notions of nomadism and mobility, the road becomes an important and recurrent visual motif. At this time, Vandenberg frequently visited Marseille, both the birthplace of Antonin Artaud and where Rimbaud died, and these trips resulted in a series of diary-like notebooks consisting of drawings, watercolours and notes. In 1999, Philippe Vandenberg was given a major solo-exhibition at the MuHKA, Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp). Philippe Vandenberg: Oeuvre 1995-1999 presented an extensive overview of works made during this period, a timely celebration of the artist’s unique position in the world of contemporary art. After this exhibition, Vandenberg continued working in this style, although the subject matter of the paintings became more and more personal, ranging from a series of self-portraits to portrayals of German left-wing militant Ulrike Meinhof, and including harsh depictions of the suicide of fellow-artist and friend Marc Maet.

From 2003 onwards, word and image become intimately entwined, resulting in a number of innovative exhibition and book projects with drawings and texts, such as Pilgrim’s Throat (2003), and Exile de peintre (2004).

Along with his complex approach to painting, Vandenberg continued to explore the formal and aesthetic possibilities of drawing — the multi-layered and rich works on paper constituting a major part of his oeuvre. In these later years, he relentlessly dedicated himself to three major cycles of paintings. Following the visual motif of the road, he worked on a series of abstract geometric canvases (2003-2004) consisting of dotted lines, squares and colourful swastikas, visual patterns suggesting movement, the negation of stagnation and the omnipresence of evil.

A second cycle consists of yellow and orange monochromes on which the phrase L’important c’est le kamikaze (The Importance is Kamikaze) frequently returns, signifying the artist’s recurrent preoccupation with destruction as a foremost creative act. Fragmented and diverse, at once alienating and familiar, the renewal of Vandenberg’s uncompromising attitude gained him critical acclaim. After his 2006 exhibition L’important c’est le kamikaze, Oeuvre 2000-2006 at the Arthur Rimbaud Museum in Charleville-Mézières, there was a resurgence of international interest in his work, resulting in exhibitions in New York and the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Museum of Fine Arts) in Ghent. His last cycle of paintings, Kill Them All (2007-2009) shows an insidious new direction, with words in English dominating a return to figurative painting.

Philippe Vandenberg died on 29 June 2009.
