NALMCO Members,

Happy New Year! I want to begin by saying ‘Thank you’ to all NALMCO volunteers for your support in 2023. As we kick off a new year, I get nervous thinking about all the objectives we set out to accomplish this year. But, that anxiety quickly turns to excitement knowing that I have a dedicated team behind me, driving NALMCO forward.

The Membership Committee, led by Monica Kristo and newly appointed Co-Chair Spencer Kendall, have already started their RANDY ALLEN, CALT outreach campaign. Supported by a team of volunteers, the committee is engaging members and reminding them to renew their membership by the end of January and to register for Spring Seminar, which is less than 5 weeks away! Members can tackle both at once, and doing so takes less than 5 minutes to complete. Simply log into your account on the NALMCO website and follow the prompts.

This year, Saylite has graciously offered to host the 2024 Spring Seminar in Dallas, Texas, where attendees will be invited to tour the Saylite facility and participate in multiple Learning Labs over the course of two days. If you’ve never attended, NALMCO’s Spring conference is grounded in education, so you don’t have to be in sales to benefit from this event. There are multiple Learning Labs hosted by the Associate Members, and there will be opportunities for networking and peer-to-peer engagement in the evening. Space is limited, so register early and be prepared to learn and engage with industry professionals as they share analytics, relevant case studies and insight into the lighting industry. In other relevant news, the Program Committee, led by Pattie Cagle, is already focused on the 2024 Annual Conference and Trade Show, which will be held at the Omni Orlando Resort in ChampionsGate, Florida. After hosting one of our most highly anticipated and well attended events in 2023, the Program Committee has some big shoes to fill, but I have every bit of confidence that they will come through in true fashion. The Certification Committee, led by Brian Baker, continues to push NALMCO’s certifications to new heights (more on that later), while the Communications Committee, led by Lisa Orloff, navigates various platforms to broaden NALMCO’s audience and footprint within the industry.

Lat year was a successful one for Lighting Management and Maintenance. We saw an increase in our readership. We celebrated project success stories and highlighted movements in the industry, such as the continued emergence of EV charging as an expanding market. We commemorated NALMCO’s 70th anniversary with a look back on the growth of the organization throughout the years. With the turning of the calendar, we continue our mission to deliver critical insight and guidance on trends and developments in lighting maintenance and lighting technology.

In the upcoming March issue of LM&M, the spotlight turns to sustainability in the lighting retrofit market, a topic of increasing relevance to lighting maintenance contractors. Sustainability is becoming a cornerstone of the lighting industry, not just as an environmental consideration, but as a best financial practice as well. Retrofitting—the process of upgrading the components of an existing luminaire instead of installing new ones—is now being recognized for its contribution to sustainability.

Sustainability and the circular economy are no longer just buzzwords; they are becoming embedded in the everyday decisions and practices of lighting professionals. The IES is in talks with European entities to establish Recommended Practices rooted in the principles of a circular economy. These discussions are a precursor to a shift that will soon become the norm across the industry.

Lighting experts are delving into Product Category Rules (PCR), which provide essential guidelines for creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs serve as ecolabels for products—luminaires, in this context—and represent a transparent public disclosure that details the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle, as determined by a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

For contractors unfamiliar with these terms, now is the time to get acquainted. EPDs and LCAs are more than mere acronyms; they are now critical components of the job. Their significance is growing, as an increasing number of lighting designers not only inquire about EPDs but also prioritize specifying products that offer such declarations.

If you’ve already participated in projects where sustainability or the circular economy played a pivotal role, your insights are valuable and could contribute to a broader understanding within our community. Please send your notes to me at editor@nalmco.org.

For those who have not yet encountered these considerations in your work, prepare yourselves— it’s only a matter of time. The industry is on the cusp of adopting new practices that prioritize the long-term impact of lighting solutions on the environment.

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare facilities, Denver Health Medical Center has found a trusted partner in Facility Solutions Group (FSG), a partnership that has spanned a decade. Over the years, FSG has been involved in retrofitting several of their facilities, including the medical center’s Rita Bass Trauma and EMS Education Institute, which serves as a training grounds for Denver Health’s paramedic team. Their long-standing relationship and success in previous projects recently brought about a new opportunity.

The medical center was looking to revamp the lighting in the Pavilion C Obstetrics and Pediatrics building, a center that ranked as one of the best maternity hospitals in 2020, according to Newsweek.1 With the center’s outstanding reputation and commitment to patient care on the line,

the stakes were high. The new lighting solution needed to reflect those high standards. It needed to be installed and commissioned efficiently. And, it needed to supplement the exceptional level of comfort and care that patients felt in their rooms.

A local ESCO was awarded the retrofit contract. Denver Health, familiar with FSG's expertise, recommended the ESCO turn to FSG for assistance. The project involved upgrading patient rooms with an innovative lighting solution that offered not just illumination but also customizable dimming options for patient comfort.

David Meeker, Account Manager, served as FSG’s lead on the project. Through his 18 years with FSG, David has extensive

experience with healthcare projects, including leading the audit team on a 4 million sq. ft. hospital retrofit several years ago. His familiarity with the unique requirements of healthcare spaces proved invaluable on this project.

David shared the complexities of the retrofit. Originally, the patient rooms had a single 2x4 fluorescent fixture form factor with an exam light, a reading light, and an ambient light, all very dated and prone to malfunctions. David saw this as an opportunity to both simplify and upgrade. With assistance from local agent Joe Fisher of Fisher Lighting & Controls, he selected Pa-Co Lighting Inc.’s MRPA2, a high-end yet affordable LED solution with a comfortable color temperature (3000K) and excellent color rendering (90 CRI).

Prior to installation, FSG did a mockup prototype to ensure the solution would work. Mark Bollig, Senior Project Manager at Denver Health, told David, “We have to test this first, because if there is a lot of resistance [from the clinical staff], it’s not going to work.” David noted that when the staff saw the lighting system perform and tested the room for a couple of months, everyone was on board. He explained, “It wasn’t over engineered – it was a simple solution that improved the light quality and kept things easy for both patients and staff.”

FSG’s own in-house team has done the install of the new fixtures. To date, they have retrofitted 28 rooms of the 60 patient rooms and have plans to complete the remaining half this year.

The versatility of the new 3-in-1 LED fixtures opened the door to the possibility of adding dimming control. They opted for a dimming control system from Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC). Shane Lacey of George Lacey Sales (GLS), a local subject matter expert, played a crucial role as the ETC agent, ensuring the success of the dimming integration. The fixtures are controlled either from the bed controller, which has a simple on/off switch, or from the wall, where the nurse or patient can dim them to a comfortable level. The result was a sophisticated yet simple solution that enhanced both the light quality and the patient experience.

REMEMBER LIGHTING QUALITY When Designing Efficiency-Driven Retrofit Projects

It’s no secret that commercial electricity rates continue to rise.

A combination of energy usage and increased demand charges has caused a sharp rise in commercial energy bills. Lighting can often be the largest user of electrical energy, accounting for up to 40 percent in a commercial building. That’s why there’s been a hyper-focus within the commercial and industrial sectors on pursuing energy-efficient lighting solutions. This has been especially evident with the advent over the past decade of LED lighting and digital controls, which have proven to deliver significant energy savings compared to conventional lighting.

case. Lighting solutions can realize both energy efficiency and lighting quality in areas such as visual comfort without making compromises. Here, we will explore how to provide high-quality lighting for a retrofit project while still obtaining exceptional lighting efficiency.

What is Lighting Quality?

The good news is today’s lighting solutions deliver exceptional energy efficiency. The not-so good news is, during this aggressive pursuit to maximize energy savings, some key lighting fundamentals, especially around lighting quality, have unnecessarily taken a back seat. This does not have to be the

Where lighting efficiency refers to the amount of light produced by a lighting system in relation to the amount of energy it consumes, lighting quality refers to the overall appearance and functionality of the lighting system. It takes into consideration factors such as color rendering, color temperature, glare, flicker, and uniformity.

A lighting system that factors in quality of lighting can enhance the visual appeal of a space, help improve productivity, and even impact the mood of the occupants in a space.

Certain factors might be more important than others, depending on the project. For a retail space, a high CRI is of particular importance.

When specifying a lighting system for a retrofit project, the factors impacting lighting efficiency are often well known and widely adopted. Efficiency is often measured in lumens per watt; the higher the lumens-per-watt rating, the more efficient the lighting system. LED lighting, for instance, is one of the most energy-efficient lighting technologies available, with some models producing up to 200 lumens per watt. The savings are impressive, but the specification process should not stop there when you can extract more value from your lighting system by factoring in lighting quality.

Before jumping into the fundamentals of specifying for quality and efficiency, here are some key factors in evaluating lighting quality when reviewing fixture specifications. Your lighting fixture manufacturer or representative can assist in determining which factors are most important for a project based on the application and intended occupancy.

Color temperature: The color temperature of light can affect the mood and atmosphere of a space. For example, warmer color temperatures (around 2700K) can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere, while cooler color temperatures (around 5000K) can create a more energizing and productive atmosphere.

Color rendering index (CRI): The CRI measures how well a light source renders colors compared to a reference light source of the same color temperature. A higher CRI means that colors will appear more accurate and vibrant. The CRI is calculated based on the performance of the light source across eight color samples (R1-R8) that cover a range of hues, and the R9 value specifically measures the rendering of a saturated red sample.

CRI considerations come into play, for example, in a retail environment when displaying color-rich or visually attractive products such as food, clothing, jewelry and so forth, and even in distribution centers when associates need to distinguish product colors when picking discrete items off a shelf.

Color consistency (binning): Binning refers to the practice of sorting LEDs into groups based on their spectral characteristics, particularly their color temperature and color rendering index (CRI). A reliable manufacturer will often bin their LEDs based on their spectral characteristics. LEDs that fall into the same bin have very similar spectral characteristics, which helps ensure color consistency and quality lighting when the LEDs are used in products like light bulbs, fixtures, or displays.

Ceiling luminance: Luminance is the measurable quality of light that most closely corresponds to brightness and can be desired in some applications while not in others. For example, a retail store may desire increased ceiling luminance (brightness) so it appears “open” from outside the store. On the other hand, in a high-end amenity space, it may be desirable to have zero luminance at the ceiling plane because the focus is on the architecture or other features in the space.

Glare: Glare can occur when there is a significant contrast between the brightness of the light source and the surrounding environment. Glare can cause general discomfort or even make it difficult for occupants to see properly in a space.

Uniformity and Light Distribution: Uniformity is how even the light levels are in a space with an objective to avoid variations between darker and lighter areas. Light distribution is the distribution pattern of the light emanating from the fixture. Direct lighting, if not properly specified, can create harsh shadows and hot spots, while indirect lighting can create a more diffused and even distribution of light. Uniformity and light distribution are factors for lighting throughout the space including ceilings, walls, vertical surfaces (such as tables and desks), and hallways/ corridors.

Maintenance: Proper maintenance of lighting fixtures is important to ensure that they are functioning at their best. Dirty, dusty, or damaged fixtures can decrease lighting quality and efficiency.

Focus on Lighting Fundamentals When specifying a lighting solution, there are several key lighting fundamentals – including data about energy usage and lighting quality – to focus on when selecting lighting fixtures and related technology. These fundamentals help keep the objectives of lighting a space in the forefront and help in obtaining lighting efficiency without sacrificing lighting quality.

Deliver the correct amount of light for the space and task.

The amount of light required for each space and task in a commercial setting depends on various factors such as the nature of the work being done, the age of the occupants, the size of the space, and the type of lighting fixtures being used. Here are some general guidelines based on foot-candle recommendations as listed by the IES: •

General lighting: For general lighting in offices, schools, warehouses, industrial spaces and other commercial spaces, a lighting level of around 30 – 50 foot-candles is recommended. The foot-candle is the unit of measurement for the amount of light that falls on a surface. The exact amount of light needed may vary based on factors such as the age of the occupants and the size of the space.

•

Task lighting: For tasks within a space that require more focused lighting, such as reading or detailed work, a lighting level of around 75 – 100 foot-candles is recommended.

This can be achieved using task lamps or fixtures that are specifically designed for task lighting.

•

Conference rooms and presentation areas: These spaces may require higher levels of lighting to accommodate visual aids such as projectors or whiteboards. A lighting level of around 50– 75 foot-candles is recommended for these spaces.

•

Restrooms and hallways: These areas typically require lower levels of lighting, around 10 – 20 foot-candles.

•

Retail spaces: Retail spaces may require higher levels of lighting to showcase merchandise. Lighting levels of around 75 – 150 foot-candles are recommended for these spaces.

It's important to note that lighting levels can also be affected by factors such as the color of walls and surfaces, the amount of natural light in a space, and the type of lighting fixtures being used. A lighting designer or a qualified electrician can help determine the appropriate lighting levels for each space in a commercial setting.

Factors Affecting Lighting Quality

Flicker: Flicker occurs when the light source rapidly turns on and off. This can cause eye strain, headaches, and even seizures in some individuals. To find low flicker fixtures, customers can look for products that have been certified or tested for flicker by reputable third-party organizations (see Federal Projects UFC/ P100 and the IEEE’s P1789 Standard).

Task and space requirements: Different spaces and tasks require different levels and types of lighting. Understanding the needs of the space or task is important in determining the appropriate lighting design.

•

Lighting layout: The layout of lighting fixtures is important in achieving even light distribution. The fixtures should be positioned in a way that ensures the light is evenly distributed throughout a space.

•

Lighting intensity: The intensity of the light should be appropriate for the space and task. Too much or too little light can create problems such as glare, eye strain, or inadequate illumination.

•

Light color temperature: The color temperature of the light can affect the ambiance of the space and the visibility of objects. Choosing the appropriate color temperature can help to achieve the desired effect.

•

Control systems: Lighting control systems such as dimmers or timers can be used to adjust to the proper lighting level where the light is required or desired based on the needs of the space or task. This is in addition to what control systems can do to improve lighting efficiency.

In summary, achieving uniform, even light distribution requires careful planning and consideration of the needs of the space or task, as well as the appropriate lighting layout, intensity, color temperature, and control systems. Again, a lighting designer or a qualified electrician can help to create a lighting plan that achieves the proper light level when and where it is needed in a commercial setting.

Evaluate lighting fixture service life.

The service life of a lighting fixture can vary depending on various factors such as the quality of the fixture, the frequency of use, and the environment in which it is used. With proper selection and maintenance, a lighting fixture can typically last anywhere from 10 – 20 years.

Periodic maintenance is important to ensure that the lighting

fixture continues to operate at optimal performance and to extend its service life. Maintenance tasks may include cleaning the fixture, replacing drivers, inspecting for damage or wear and tear, and confirming controls operations are still in line with current user application.

Lumen maintenance (in contrast to initial lumens often stated at installation) is about how a long a fixture maintains the desired lumens and light output to provide the correct amount of light over the life of the system efficiently, which is key factor when evaluating lighting fixtures. L70 and L90 are terms used to describe the lifespan of a lighting fixture, and they refer to the amount of time it takes for the light output of the fixture to degrade to a certain percentage of its initial brightness. For example, an L70 of 100K to 150K means a fixture will maintain a minimum of 70% of the luminous flux for the defined period (in this case, 100,000 to 150,000 hours) before degrading below that percentage.

When comparing a lighting fixture with an L70 of 100K to 150K from a reliable manufacturer versus 50K hours (which is often seen with replacement LED tubes), that fixture will have less degradation over the same period, allowing for either reduced wattage, increased service life, or both. Selecting fixtures with poor lumen maintenance forces a customer to re-do an installation sooner than planned or endure lower than expected light levels until the fixture eventually needs to be replaced.

Focus Equally on Lighting Efficiency and Quality The concept of lighting efficiency and lighting quality are two crucial aspects to be considered in lighting design. A focus on both aspects is necessary if the objective is to create an optimal lighting environment that is efficient, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing.

Using the right lighting and control solution can enhance the comfort, productivity, safety, and security of a given building or facility space. The right LED technology and enhanced controls can help meet code compliance and deliver energy efficiency and reduce operating budgets while offering visual comfort and lighting quality for occupants over the expected life of the system.

The Highs and Lows of the EV Charging Market

In previous issues, we have written extensively about growing EV charging opportunities and how lighting maintenance contractors can capitalize on those opportunities. Here, we offer a word of caution.

The Administration’s recent announcement of a $46.5 million investment into the EV charging infrastructure presents a complex picture for contractors in the business of installing these chargers. On one hand, there’s a clear commitment by the government to expand America’s electric vehicle (EV) charging network, with an ambitious goal to construct 500,000 public EV charging ports by 2030 and move towards net-zero emissions by 2050. This funding is

directed towards enhancing charging performance, resilience, and reliability, while also fostering job growth in the clean energy sector.

However, the current financial health of companies within the EV charging industry tells a different story. Despite the increase in EVs on the road and the government’s investment in charging infrastructure, companies like ChargePoint Holdings, Blink Charging, and EVgo have seen their share prices plummet, with significant losses and missed revenue projections. These companies don’t anticipate profitability for about another year, and the pressure is mounting with the possibility of Tesla opening its charging network to other EVs.

McKinsey estimates suggest that 1.5 million public chargers are needed by 2030 to keep pace with EV sales, yet the U.S. currently has only about 159,000 public charging ports.

Tesla’s aggressive expansion of its charging network adds another layer of competition, as they continue to add thousands of fast chargers. Other big players, such as BP, Shell, Walmart, and various automakers, are also entering the charging network space, either by partnering with existing providers or starting their own networks.

However, what happens if the demand for EV chargers plummets?

Tesla’s stock price has come crashing back down to earth.

It began the year at about $250. As of this writing, the stock was at $182. There is other bad news. Hertz ordered 100,000

Teslas in 2021 and has sold-off about 30% of them, taking a $245 million charge against its earnings. Its pledge to buy 175,000 EVs from GM seems unlikely to happen.

A Wall Street Journal article says truck maker Rivian lost $33,000 on every electric vehicle it built in the second quarter of 2023.

For lighting contractors, this represents a cautionary tale.

While the demand for charging stations is growing, the profitability of installing them isn’t guaranteed—or even getting paid for your labor. The industry faces challenges that include customer uncertainty, economic downturns, higher costs, delayed EV deliveries, and the need for a critical mass of EV drivers to make the business model viable.

Perhaps Toyota has the winning strategy—hybrids. And many hybrid drivers (myself included) don’t use public charging stations. We simply charge at home.

For electrical contractors, this means navigating an evolving landscape with cautious optimism. While there is growth and the promise of an electric future, the market is still finding its footing. The expansion is not without its risks, and contractors need to be prepared for the long game, where market consolidation and partnerships with financially solid companies might prove to be the most sustainable path forward.

Perhaps lighting maintenance contractors are the big winners, after all. If EV makers are losing money and EV charging companies are losing money, the lighting maintenance contractors can laugh all the way to the bank— if they get paid. ■

A Guide to Light Pole Inspection Methods

An experienced exterior lighting maintenance technician can simply look at the light pole and its surroundings and know its condition. But, in today’s industry, most customers want a more detailed report to validate the expense. Here, we discuss common methods to evaluate the integrity of light poles.

The common accepted inspection is an ultrasonic pole inspection. Other common inspection methods include a visual inspection and a hammer punch test. A magnetic particulate crack inspection (AKA Magnaflux) is sometimes used when cracking is a prevalent problem. Some large property owners/managers, such as McDonalds, CBRE, and Irvine Company, have implemented their own procedures.

However, there is no officially recognized light pole inspection procedure, protocol, or training.

Regardless of the type of test, we utilize a simple three stage rating system when inspecting light poles: •

Good – No action needed at this time.

•

Marginal – Structurally, the pole is fine but needs something simple like a scrape and paint for surface rust to prevent a future hazard. The pole should be tested again within 12 months.

•

Bad or Hazard – This pole has structural issues and needs to be repaired or replaced before it falls.

For a thorough pole inspection, proper documentation is key.

Take photos of the pole, the surrounding area, and any issues, and write a description of the pole and recommended repairs.

A site map and pole specifications are helpful to make repair estimates from the report. It is the inspector’s responsibility to make this determination in the field, rather than office staff reviewing data and determining the pole’s condition at a later date. This will keep the report accurate and save time on return trips if the data does not agree with pictures and notes.

This is a critical step that we have seen missed by contractors reviewing reports to make a bill of materials for repair and replacement estimates.

The simplest inspection is a visual inspection looking for common signs of pole damage. The steps are simple, and every exterior lighting maintenance technician should be checking every pole they perform service on.

If the pole is showing signs of deterioration, a hammer punch test can be performed. In this test, set a punch on the pole shaft, just above the base weld, and hit it moderately with a hammer. We discussed how to identify a rusted or damaged light pole in the November issue.

A hammer punch test is a simple way to test the integrity of a pole.

The ultrasonic pole inspection is the premier pole inspection method and is widely used by contractors and accepted by property owners and managers. This inspection provides a detailed report showing the condition of the light poles, their location on a map, and should be integrated with an energy efficient audit. The ultrasonic thickness gauge takes point thickness readings of the light pole shaft and highlights inconsistencies. A visual inspection and hammer punch test are included in the inspection.

We use DeFelsko’s Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge with a corrosion probe and advanced body. Their new precision probe has through-paint capability and can be used down to a 1.5” outside diameter. (As of writing this article, we have not used the new precision probe in the field.) Their advanced gauge stores the thickness readings, separating each pole into its own batch, that is integrated into a report back in the office.

Ultrasonic Testing and Pole Inspection Overview.

To create the site plan and take field notes, we recommend using the energy efficient audit software you are already using.

Our team has talked to team members from Snapcount and others who can customize a contractor’s application to include a pole condition section with additional pictures and text fields for the pole notes.

The final, much less common, test is a magnetic particulate crack inspection, often referred to a magnaflux test. This test, performed by specialized contractors, highlights cracking and is reserved for instances where poles are failing due to cracks rather than rust.

Inspecting poles and identifying those in need of repair or replacement is first and foremost a safety issue, with the added benefit of ensuring that projects are completed on time, with no need for return visits and added expenses. Thorough documentation should be completed on-site and reported to the property manager so that the any problems can be addressed before it is too late. ■

THE FIRST OF ITS KIND NALMCO Leads the Way With Industry-First GUV Certifications

A typical UV-C lamp has three components: the mount, the reflector, and the baffle. The mount usually contains the power supply and electrical components and is attached to the wall or ceiling. The reflector helps to make certain that the maximum amount of light from the source is directed to the areas of concern. The baffle or louvers block unsafe stray light that may find its way into the occupied zone of a room.

The concept of using germicidal ultraviolet light for infection prevention is not a new one; it dates back to the late 19th century, when it was discovered that microorganisms are susceptible to various wavelengths of UV light. Recently, the resurgence of diseases transmitted through the air, such as tuberculosis and COVID, has rekindled interest in germicidal UV (GUV).

Lamps emitting ultraviolet light at 254 nm are most commonly used as upper room disinfectants. Additionally, LEDs emitting 265 nm have recently been applied to upper room. Excimer lamps emitting 222 nm can be used in down lights, as they are considered safe for human exposure due to their low intensity as compared to 254 nm.

Given this renewed public interest, many clients, in a wide variety of settings, are asking about adding germicidal UV fixtures in their buildings. First, a quick discussion of GUV to help you familiarize yourself with the technology.

ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT

Ultraviolet light is commonly associated with sunburn and skin cancer. The wavelengths responsible for these hazardous health outcomes, however, fall in the UV-A and UV-B portions of the spectrum. According to Recommended Practice: Risk Group Classification And Minimization Of Photobiological Hazards From Ultraviolet Lamps And Lamp Systems (ANSI/IES RP 27.1-22), "There is no evidence at this time of carcinogenic risk in humans from UV-C exposure.”1 This document was published in 2022 and is a globally recognized ANSI standard.

The risk associated with UV-C (254 nm) is for skin and eye irritation and is well defined. Follow the guidelines set forth in ANSI/CAN/UL 8802-2023, Standard for Ultraviolet (UV) Germicidal Equipment and Systems to limit these risks.

Ultraviolet light occupies the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum just above visible light in terms of energy. Ranging from 100 to 400 nm, ultraviolet light is categorized into different ranges based on penetration depth into living tissue. For germicidal UV applications, the UV-C portion, spanning 200 to 280 nm, is the portion of interest.

Wavelengths in the UV-C portion of the spectrum have more germicidal activity and pose significantly less risk to human health.

The mechanism of disinfection using ultraviolet light involves damaging the DNA, RNA, and proteins within microorganisms and viruses, rendering them incapable of replication. The effectiveness of disinfection depends on the intensity of UV, distance from the source, and duration of exposure. While concepts like microbe sensitivity, wavelength efficacy, and optimal dosing practices continue to evolve, the fundamental aspects of these processes are reasonably well understood.

UV-C SOURCES AND APPLICATIONS Various types of UV-C sources exist, each emitting light at different wavelengths. Historically, low-pressure mercury lamps have been the most common, effective and affordable. Other options include excimer lamps, pulsed xenon lamps, and LEDs, all capable of producing UV-C light.

BENEFITS AND DRAWBACKS Chemical disinfection methods are widely used but expensive, and chemical disinfectants often pose health hazards. Given lighting’s ubiquity in our spaces, using light for disinfection is a desirable alternative to chemical methods.

UV-C is often less expensive to install and is more impactful than other physical disinfection methods, such as ventilation and filtration. Furthermore, upper-room GUV takes up no floor space, doesn’t generate any noise, and uses MUCH less energy than in-room filtration devices or ventilation. It’s easy to install and doesn’t cause disruption to services like you would see if installing a new ventilation system.

The biggest road block to widespread adoption of GUV has been a lack of familiarity and experience in applying the technology.

If only there were some sort of GUV certification program…

CERTIFICATIONS

GUV-C technology and its effective implementation in their respective fields.

NALMCO recognized the need for such a program, and, at the end of 2021, began developing a certification program to train professionals responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of GUV luminaires.

Successful completion of a written and practical examination will earn participants in the program one of three certifications:

LONGER TRANSITS, HIGHER COSTS

The global supply chain has witnessed some bleak developments since our last update in November.

Concerning common vessel routes, the Panama Canal continues to experience droughts leading to decreased volume through the canal. When operating at normal capacity, 34-36 ships can move through the canal daily. That number decreased to an average of 22 ships in December of 2023 and is expected to go even lower in the coming months. Ships are now experiencing average wait times of 20 days.1 The Red Sea is a vital waterway for international shipping, connecting to the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal in the north and to the Indian Ocean through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait in the south. Beginning in November of 2023, Houthi rebels began attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea. The consequences, from a logistics perspective (to say nothing of the geopolitical consequences, which are beyond the scope of this article) are increased shipping and insurance costs and longer transit times.1 A common workaround is to reroute vessels around the southern tip of Africa, which can add as much as 3 weeks to transit times, not to mention the increased cost. Several notable carriers have announced that they will divert vessels via this route until further notice.2 Electrical distributor Border States, who regularly posts supply chain updates on their website, noted that “ocean container rates have doubled over the past 30 days, and transit times have increased 1-2 weeks in many freight lanes.”3 As for over-the-road freight here in North America, the outlook is brighter. Soft demand means that truck capacity is available. The LTL market seems to have weathered the closing of YRC, one of the largest LTL carriers prior to its bankruptcy in August.3 Diesel prices remain low, in part because domestic oil output has reached an all-time high.3 While supply chain capacity is in decent shape domestically, the more concerning story is the disruption of global cargo routes. The takeaway? Plan for longer transits and higher costs. P

A dozen years ago, Joan Blacker found herself laid off after turning down a relocation to the Midwest from her beloved home turf in the Northwest. She looked forward to a summer off with her girls, which would give her some time to look for a job closer to home. The lighting world had other plans for her, and as the summer of 2011 started, she was offered the position of Assistant Service Manager at Northwest Edison, an electrical contractor.

Joan found she had a lot to learn about fluorescent and LED lighting, coming from a small manufacturer of halogen work lights. “So I rolled up my sleeves and got to work learning all I could about lighting. I attended workshops at the local Seattle Lighting Lab and traveled to manufacturer training.

Our President and CEO, Dan Camilleri, is just amazing as an owner – really family-oriented. It was a great opportunity!”

Asked about the challenges faced along her career path, Joan commented, “I had reservations when LED hit the ground running. It changed so quickly, first induction, then LED. Keeping up with changing markets and products was definitely a challenge. For years it was primarily servicing T12s or T8s, and now we are seeing customers with LED to be maintained. While it was a big challenge, my involvement with manufacturers and NALMCO has made this easier. A lot of our facility managers didn’t trust the technology initially.

On LED, it was hard for building owners and property managers to resist a lower price and a similar warranty.

They didn’t understand they were not comparing apples to apples.”

Joan made it her mission to learn all the ins and outs of Northwest’s business, developing relationships with cohorts, vendors, and customers as she learned the business. Promoted to Director of Service Operations in 2013, Joan took on the priority of leading a team to growing profitability. In 2014, Joan was invited to be on the Northwest Edison Leadership Team, where she has learned all aspects of the company. Northwest Edison invested in training for their leaders (LEAP, a full-year leadership training program in Seattle). With building customer relationships as a top priority, Joan has been involved in sales and some project management over the years. Joan took on the leadership of the accounting team while continuing her Director of Service Operations role. Her favorite part is the customer relationships – engaged with customers constantly, she notes, “I love the different hats I wear, and my job is never boring!”

Reflecting on challenges, Joan pointed to the difficulties in hiring skilled labor. “We have an amazing field team; however, building on the team has been a challenge.

skilled tradesmen. With the advancement in lighting controls, EV charging, IAQ and battery storage systems, the requirements for learning have changed – being an electrician is no longer running pipe and wire, or installing lamps and ballasts. It’s more involved. The additional education on these technologies takes time.”

While Joan has known various NALMCO members from other business activity, she became directly involved in 2023, enjoying her first Annual Convention and Trade Show in Palm Springs. “NALMCO is so great – everybody is willing to share successes, failures, ideas, and to collaborate – they are fantastic. I love it!” Joan is now part of NALMCO’s Program Committee and is all-in on the content planning and preparation for the upcoming 2024 Spring Seminar program in Dallas, TX from March 5-7, 2024.

Asked for her advice to anyone entering the industry, Joan offered: “Remove the blinders that we sometimes have in our jobs, blinders that make us miss opportunities to learn and grow. Pay attention to what is happening around you in other areas of the company, and have a willingness to learn and to help where you can. Make yourself knowledgeable, be flexible! Stay involved…the industry is ever-changing.

Get involved in NALMCO – a great group of individuals and companies you can learn from.”

Embracing her non-working hours with the same enthusiasm as her workdays, Joan loves to travel. Before her three girls left home, many years were spent camping, hunting and fishing with Joan’s husband, her girls, close friends and family. Two of Joan’s daughters now work for her at Northwest Edison – “Watching our three girls grow into amazing young women has been the best.” Joan is also thrilled to now have a grandson, with a granddaughter on the way in April. The annual camping trip has now been replaced with an annual trip to a warm destination with Joan’s group of girlfriends – “We love the sun!” There’s no question that Joan Blacker is thriving, sharing her positive energy and attitude – inside and outside of a job she loves.
