FROM THE EDITOR It does not seen like that it has been three years since we started the Wildcat Web. But when these guys were sophomores, we went on-line for the first time. The first year was a pretty crude site. All we had was the basics, stories, stats and photos. Over all the first season, we had 3,145 hits to the web site on 2-4-98 . The second year we hit the ground running a little harder. We tried to add a few more features, get a little more in depth with some of the stats and information. Looking back on the history of the site, on 1-29-99 there were 12,472 hits on the site. We also started the"Wildcat Web Unsung Hero of the Week" award, given to the player who went out and did his job and seldom got any praise for it. At the end of the season, we let the visitors of the Wildcat Web vote on who they wanted as "Unsung Hero of the Year". During the off-season we tried to come up with something new to add to the site. After doing a lot of homework and putting many hours in on exactly how this could be pulled off, we decided to just do it. For the first time in this area, we offered the Tullahoma High School Football game "live" via the internet. We made all of the necessary contacts to pull this off. First we contacted the TSSAA to make sure there we would not be committing any violations according to the TSSAA. Then we went right down our list making sure all parties involved knew what was going on. WJIG offered us the use of their audio feed for the broadcast. Midtnn.net let us use their server to broadcast over the internet. They also are the host of the Wildcat Web. By offering this "live" broadcast, people from all over the US was able to listen to the Wildcats. We received many e-mails thanking us for offering this. Now they could at least hear their sons and grandsons play. We also archived the games so anyone could go back and lisen to them at any time. We were planning on creating an archive of them to
keep, but as all new adventures, there are problems that arise. But without going into a lot of boring details, the archives are no longer available. As of 2-4-00, there have been 30,200 hits on the site. We also added a message board this year, but again this was lost with the archives. We are in the process of getting some new and exciting stuff ready for next season. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support. Some went beyond their call of duty to help out. Chris Pruitt at Midtnn.net did a fantastic job manning the computers every Friday night. Many thanks to Scott Shasteen for providing the great stories and helping promote the Wildcat Web on Tullahoma.Net Sports. A few others I would like to single out is Sandy and Marcie Sanders of Tullahoma.Net, you guys were a great help this year as well (more than you know). Thanks to Blake Engels at Midtnn.Net for the server space and for hosting the Wildcat Web there. But again I must thank my family, Donna, Whitney and Dawn. There were many hours put in each week getting everything typed in, scanned in, printed and other time spent in front of the computer. I never once heard them complain about staying in front of the computer all of the time. I love you guys!! Thank you God for all you have done for me. For it is by your grace that I have the ability to do the things I can do and I give you the praise and glory for it!! We are hoping to have some more new stuff for next year. Tullahoma rode the legs of seniors Jermaine Dunlap in the first half and John Michael in the second half to a 32-14 win over Franklin County in Winchester Friday night. The season opener for both teams was tied 7-7 with 4:41 left in
Jermaine Dunlap takes a breather after scoring his first touchdown. the first quarter, but from there it was all Tullahoma as the Wildcats rolled up 470 yards total offense against the bigger Rebels defense. The Wildcats' 25 unanswered points proved to be too much for the home team to overcome as Tullahoma won its fourth straight in the longstanding series. "I am real proud of this football team," said an exhausted coach John Olive following the victory. "I thought Sam Melton and our offensive people did an excellent job and I thought John Michael played with a great big heart tonight. Jared Cox, Brad Stockton, JonMichael Harris, Aaron Swallom, Chuck Large, Chase Banks, Forrest McCullough all did a great job on the line pushing forward and the running backs really ran hard." The Wildcats couldn't have
opened the game any better if they had been allowed to write the script. They marched 72 yards in five plays while consuming 1:30 on the clock. Dunlap had runs of four and eight yards before Michael hit Ryan McLaughlin with a 21 yard strike for a first down at the Rebels 39. On the next play Dunlap circled left end and couldn't be caught as he outraced the Franklin County secondary to the end zone. Chase Banks drilled the PAT and Tullahoma led 7-0 with 10:10 left in the first. "I think if I could have gotten 20 carries I would have gained 300 yards," said an excited Dunlap. "The line was doing a super job of clearing out people and I felt good running in there tonight." The Rebels answered the bell though as Demarie McReynolds busted through the center of the Tullahoma defense and gained big yardage play after play. Franklin County marched straight down the field 57 yards and scored with 4:41 left on a one-yard run by Devon Mason. But from that point on it was all Tullahoma. The Cats drove 79 yards in two minutes with Michael scoring on a one-yard plunge following a 71-yard strike to McLaughlin, who caught two passes for 92 yards. The touchdown came with 2:36 left in the first quarter and gave the Cats a 13-7 lead. Following a fumble recovery, one of two turnovers by Franklin

County, and a booming Tim Tucker punt, the Cats got the ball back at their nine yard line with 6:22 left in the half. After a shifty Michael run gave the Cats a big first down at the 21, Dunlap was ready to strike. He took the pitch and swept around left end, racing untouched 79 yards for the score. It was a great call at the perfect time. Franklin County drove to the Tullahoma 20 but was unable to score before time ran out in the half. While the offense was enjoying success the defense was taking over in their battle with the Rebels' offense. Despite the absence of Chad Brinkley and Max Trail the Tullahoma defense was in control of the line of scrimmage the final three quarters. After that initial drive by the Rebels they barely managed 100

yards total offense the rest of the evening. Forrest McCullough, Allan Hagler, Banks, Tim Tucker, Chris Burton and Wesley Painter seemed to be everywhere. Though Rebels quarterback Jay Sears often had time to throw, his receivers were consistently blanketed by the Wildcats secondary. "Coach Dyer and Coach Oakley came up with a great game plan," added Olive. "The defense just played outstanding. We were missing two of our starters on that line but guys stepped up and played really hard." In the second half the Wildcats came out and snubbed any plans Rebels coach Red Roberts, in his final season at the helm after 21 years, might have had of a comeback. They scored twice during a five-minutes span of the third quarter to put the game out of reach. After one-yard plunges from both Michael and Chris Burton gave Tullahoma a 32-7 lead with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter, the Cats begin to pull some starters and give some younger players muchneeded experience. John Michael was a real difference maker for the Wildcats. He consistently made big fourth down runs to keep drives alive and his ability to pull the ball down and get positive yardage was the majority of the Tullahoma offense Page 20 See Franklin County

It was never in doubt. From the opening kickoff Friday night the Tullahoma Wildcats dominated the Spring Hill Raiders and rolled to a 42-14 win over their new Region 54A opponents. The win raised Tullahoma's record to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the region while Spring Hill fell to 0-2,

"This is one of the teams we expect to battle for the region title so we are real happy to get this win. There are several other challengers that have to come here and Spring Hill will probably be a little healthier then. But yes, it was a good win. Our first teams played really well" Following that opening kickoff
the Wildcats drove 80 yards in 1:55, running eight plays and scoring on a 15 yard pass from John Michael to Chad Locke. Kicker Paul Wheeler, returning after missing opening night with a knee injury, drove the extra point home and the Cats had a quick 7-0 advantage. Tullahoma scored again with 2:09 left in the first quarter on a three-yard run by Jermaine Dunlap, who finished with only 23 yards on six carries. With one second left in the quarter Michael, who was 8-14 for 212 yards and four touchdowns, hit Tim DeLaughter in the end zone from 13 yards out and the Cats led 21-0 after one quarter. DeLaughter had a break-out game as he hauled down five passes for 167 yards and three touchdowns. "I hope we are building some confidence in our passing game," added Olive. "We need that part of our game to be solid." While the offense was having its way with the Raiders defense, the Wildcats defense was totally in control. They recovered four fumbles and held the Raiders to 50 yards total offense in the first half. They shut down the Spring Hill running game and never let the passing game get started. The Wildcats opened the second quarter in much the same fashion as they began the first. They started on their 20 and traveled 80 yards in only three plays, using only 15 seconds as Michael hit DeLaughter with a 65 yard touchdown pass with 7:55 left in the third. DeLaughter caught the ball in perfect stride and made a great move on the defensive back. He then turned on the jets and simply outran the secondary for the score. At that point the Cats put their second team skill position people in with their first team offensive line and again drove in for a touchdown. Junior QB Alan Moran hit split end Jonathan Boyles from seven yards out with 2:32 left in the half. Wheeler, who was a perfect six for six on PATs, nailed another one and the Cats had an insurmountable lead. Tullahoma led 35-0 at halftime as Olive played his second team much of the second quarter and, except for the first series, all of the second half. The Cats third team, featuring mostly sophomores, played most of the fourth quarter. In that one series, the first of the third quarter, the Wildcats starters drove in for another score following a fumble recovery by DeLaughter.
Chris Burton returns a punt for a sizeable gain. Michael hit Tim for their third TD connection of the night and Wheeler's PAT closed the scoring for the Wildcats. Next week Tullahoma hosts Hillsboro, also 2-0 in the region following their huge 56-21 win over Coffee County, at Wilkins Stadium in their 1999 home opener.

Tullahoma withstood a monumental challenge from Hillsboro Friday night and scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to hand the Burros a 24-10 defeat at Wilkins Stadium as the Wildcats opened the home portion of their 1999 schedule. The victory raises the Wildcats record to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in

Region 5-4A, where they are the sole remaining unbeaten team. Hillsboro is 2-1 and 1-1 heading into the fourth week of high school action. "They are a very good football team," said THS head coach John Olive. "I wouldn't be surprised to see them again sometime down the road if we both continue to improve." Tullahoma jumped on the scoreboard first when Paul Wheeler nailed a 28-yard field goal with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter. Hillsboro was held scoreless until the final play of the first half when they converted a 40-yard field goal as time expired. The teams entered the locker room tied at 3-3 and the overflow crowd began to sense that this was going to be a struggle until the very end. The Wildcats struck first in the second half when senior tailback Jermaine Dunlap sprinted 35 yards for a touchdown. Wheeler's PAT gave the Cats a 10-3 lead with 8:42 left in the third quarter. Hillsboro went right back down the field though and tied it with a four-yard TD run with 10:51 remaining in the contest. Jacob Gray's five-yard touchdown put the home team back on top with 4:21 left. Hillsboro then began an attempted march down the

The offensive line, as it has all season, responded and Dunlap finished off the scoring with a fiveyard scamper into the end zone to give John Olive win number 76 as a head coach. Hillsboro finished with three turnovers while the Wildcats committed their first TO of the season. The win sends Tullahoma to Lawrenceburg next week as the clear Region 5-4A leader. With Smyrna's surprising loss to Overton the Cats are in total control of the top

Tullahoma overcame, "One of those games where you don't play particularly well and things get a little sloppy", and was still able to handily beat Lawrence County 4114 Friday night in Lawrenceburg. Those words by Tullahoma head coach John Olive pretty much summed up the performance of his Wildcats as they committed numerous penalties and overcame a week of mental strain to run their Region 5-4A record to 3-0 and 4-0 overall. The Wildcats will host

Shelbyville, who is also undefeated in the region, next week at Wilkins Stadium. "I'm proud of the effort we gave and the kids played really hard," continued the coach. "But mentally we were just not in the game. We are fortunate that we have the talent to be able to win one of these types of games 41-14. Last year we had this same type of game against Antioch and we were fighting for our lives in the fourth quarter. Tonight fortunately we never really got in that position." Before we wallow too much in how out-of-sync the Wildcats may have appeared let's not lose sight of the fact they led 27-6 after the first quarter and they piled up over 400
yards total offense. Wide receiver Ryan McLaughlin put on a clinic as he caught seven passes for 160 yards including three touchdowns, each of more than 25 yards. It may not have been their best game of the season and yes, without a couple of those clips the score could have been closer to 60-14, but the Wildcats displayed a vast array of weapons that will keep Shelbyville coach Whit Taylor in the film room for extended sessions this week. One need only look at the first quarter to get the story of this game. Tullahoma took the opening kickoff and went three and out. Lawrence County came back and ran the Utah pass for a long touchdown and just like that, with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter, the Cats trailed for the first time this season 6-0. "I didn't really think about it until after the game that it was the first time we had trailed," added Olive. "It is a credit that we bounced back from that the way we did." Sophomore Laronn Horton, who had his best game yet and is a budding star, returned the Lawrence County kickoff 25 yards to give Tullahoma good field position outside the 30. Jermaine Dunlap, who carried 15 times for 90 yards, swept the left end and rambled 25 yards into hostile territory. Chris Burton then burst 40 yards through
the LC defense to set up his own two-yard plunge on the next play. Paul Wheeler missed the PAT and the game was tied at six with 8:12 left in the quarter. Wheeler's miss though was not the fault of the highly accurate sophomore. "I didn't realize it at the time but we were trying to kick a flat football," laughed the head coach, who is now 77-37 in his career. " It took me until after the second score to realize that the ball we were using was way under the proper pressure. No wonder we couldn't kick it." On the next Lawrence County series the Tullahoma defense forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Russell Crosswy. That set up a first down pass from Alan Moran

The next Lawrence County series found them with a big third down play that was snuffed out as Tullahoma defensive end Allen Hagler broke through and sacked the quarterback. John Michael, who was 11-18 for 215 yards and three touchdowns, then hit McLaughlin with a 33-yard pass and the senior, who had been held in check by the opposition until this night, caught the ball and made a great move on a defender to dance into the end zone with the third TD for the Cats and a 20-6 lead with still 5:39 remaining in the first quarter. The Wildcats defense again stopped the home team and forced a punt. Junior Chris Burton returned it 50 yards but a clip brought it back. This time Tullahoma was forced to punt but Lawrence County roughed Wildcats punter Tim Tucker, giving the Cats a first down. They took advantage of it as John Michael first hit McLaughlin over the middle for 40 yards and then Horton on the corner fade for the touchdown. Both catches were things of beauty as McLaughlin went high in double coverage to steal the ball away and then Horton leaped above a defender and kept his feet inbounds for the score. Wildcats Defense Shuts Down Eagles

The performance earned Dunlap the Joe Orr Realtors Player of the Week award. "I don't know whether I would call me the offensive star of the game or not," said the humble senior, who is being recruited by most SEC schools. "The offensive line was doing a tremendous job of pushing people out of the way. I felt good tonight and was just fortunate to have a good game." Dunlap and the Wildcats defense made their presence felt early as Shelbyville quarterback Marques Johnson took the first snap from center and bootlegged over left tackle. Dunlap stripped the ball away and senior defensive end Forrest McCullough recovered the Golden Eagles turnover at the Cats 22 yard line. The Wildcats wasted no time as quarterback John Michael, who was 9-20 for 118 yards and two scores, hit Jacob Gray on a screen pass and the junior rambled into the end zone for the touchdown. With Paul Wheeler's point after the Wildcats lead 7-0 after only 90 seconds. The new wrinkle in the Cats offense, passing to running backs out of the
halfway through the fourth quarter. "Our defense is playing outstanding right now," said Cats head coach John Olive, now 78-37 overall. "We gave up one big play tonight with the first-team defense out there but Coach Dyer, Coach Melton and Coach Oakley are doing a great job." The win allows Tullahoma (5-0, 4-0) to move into sole possession of first place in Region 5-4A. That honor comes courtesy of Hillsboro's 28-21 win over Overton, who had also been undefeated in the region. Tullahoma's defense forced a fumble on the first play and dominated the first three and a half quarters as the Wildcats beat Shelbyville 30-13 Friday night before a huge vocal crowd at Wilkins Stadium. Shelbyville (2-3, 2-1) came into the game featuring an explosive running back combination of Brian Farrell and Jaymond Perry. But the Cats held the Golden Eagles to 10 yards total offense in the first half and didn't allow a touchdown until

backfield, proved to be a powerful addition to the Cats offensive arsenal. "We hit Jacob on that little screen pass coming out of the backfield," continued Olive. "Coach Melton put that in for this week and it was a big play for us all night long." The rest of the first quarter and half of the second was a battle of field position as neither team could move the ball. After three punts by each team the Golden Eagles shanked their fourth punt out of bounds at the Wildcats 29. Tullahoma capitalized, despite little offense, as Wheeler nailed a 37-yard field goal with 5:59 left in the half to send the Wildcat into the locker room leading 10-0.

"We felt like the way Shelbyville was trying to blitz on almost every play that if we could just get them walled off we could get Jermaine one-on-one with a linebacker or defensive back and get good yardage," added the coach. "I was proud of Jermaine tonight I thought he ran the ball really hard." Indeed Tullahoma took the second half kickoff at its 20 and marched 80 yards in nine plays, all of them runs by Dunlap and Chris Burton, before scoring on a 19-yard pass from Michael to Ryan McLaughlin. The drive consumed 3:15 and Wheeler's kick gave Tullahoma a 17-0 lead. Two uncharacteristic Tullahoma turnovers on the next two series gave the Golden Eagles the opportunity to get back in the game, but the Wildcats defense would have non of it. Continuously McLaughlin and Burton made big stops from their defensive backfield positions as the Shelbyville running backs tried to get outside. The interior of the Cats defense, led by Wesley Painter with 15 tackles, was unyielding in its pressure on quarterback Marques Johnson. The Cats finally began a drive with 2:20 left in the third quarter at their 35 yard line. Tullahoma completely dominated Coffee County in the first half on its way to a 38-21 win Friday night in the newly renamed Coffee County Stadium in Manchester. The victory in the annual Coffee Pot game was the Wildcats third straight and the sixth win in seven meetings between the teams since John Olive's arrival in Tullahoma The win keeps the Wildcats (6-0, 5-0) firmly entrenched at the top of Region 5-4A. The Wildcats travel outside the region next week when

they visit Antioch. The Bears are now 4-2 after beating Hunters Lane 20-17 Friday night. Meanwhile Coffee County (0-6, 0-5) will travel to Hillwood in a matchup between the region's two winless squads. "I'm just real proud of this senior class," said victorious coach Olive on the field following the game. "I don't know if there has ever been a senior class at Tullahoma that never lost to Coffee County, Franklin County or Shelbyville. This senior class can say that and I am real proud of them." The first-half domination was complete by the Wildcats as they
outscored the home team 38-0 and out gained them in total offense 270-25. Tullahoma had nine first downs to one for Coffee County and the Wildcats scored on offense, defense and special teams. The Cats played their starters only two series in the second half and Coffee County responded by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. After a game-opening three downs and a punt, one of 12 on the night, by the Red Raiders the Wildcats immediately went to work. They drove 67 yards in seven plays, scoring on a 27-yard burst by senior Jermaine Dunlap with 7:57 showing on the first-quarter clock. The 2:30 drive was capped by Paul Wheeler's PAT and the Cats led 7-0 After another Red Raiders punt the Wildcats began another drive in excellent field position at their 47. On the first play senior John Michael, who was 5-15 for 148 yards and two TDs, was intercepted by intercepted by Eric Mitchell. Mitchell returned the ball to the Tullahoma 39 and gave Coffee County its best field position of the half. It was Michael's first interception of the season. The Red Raiders though were unable to convert the opportunity and they were forced to punt again. The Wildcats again showed their superior firepower as they drove 84 yards in six plays, using 3:03 off the clock. The drive stalled at the Coffee County 25 yard line but sophomore Paul Wheeler, who was perfect on the night, drilled a 32yard field goal with 2:11 left in the quarter to give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead. After the third Coffee County punt the Cats exploited the Red Raiders secondary by sending Ryan McLaughlin over the middle and giving Michael time to find him. The 40-yard TD pass and Wheeler's PAT gave Tullahoma a 17-0 lead as the first quarter ended. McLaughlin was the offensive star for the Cats as he hauled in four passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. The second quarter began much the same way as the first. Coffee
The Wildcats celebrate for keeping the coffee pot in Tullahoma for the third straight year. County was three downs and a punt every possession while Tullahoma used the Michael-McLaughlin combination with 6:35 left in the quarter. The 73-yard bomb put the Wildcats ahead 24-0. On the next Raiders punt Tullahoma junior Chris Burton returned it 47 yards for a touchdown to give the Cats a 31-0 lead with 4:16 left in the half. The first-half rout was completed with 2:35 remaining as defensive end Daniel Hill scooped up a fumble and rambled 33 yards into the end zone. Wheeler's kick sent Tullahoma into the locker room with a commanding 38-0 lead. "I thought we played a really good first half," said Olive. "We misfired a couple of times on offense but other than that we
played well. Our defense as usual was just outstanding and our special teams I thought looked good. Overall we rolled along in the first half." In the second half the Wildcats cleared the bench as they played every player who was dressed out for the game. Against the second and third teams the Red Raiders made the score respectable by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Their first scored came on a two-yard run by Dusty Elam with 11:46 to go in the game. The next came with 3:51 showing on the clock as Jason Wilber rambled 32 yards down the sideline. Tullahoma scored two secondquarter touchdowns and held the Antioch Bears to one lone score early in the second half as the Wildcats grabbed a 14-7 win in the rain Friday night in Antioch. The win keeps the secondranked Cats' record spotless at 7-0 while the Bears fall to 4-3 on the season. whole lot of effect on this game tonight," said a proud but frustrated Wildcats head coach John Olive. "Antioch is a good team and they played really hard. We struggled tonight and I don't think we were firing on all cylinders, but a lot of credit has to go to Antioch. They are a good football team." After a scoreless first quarter the Wildcats got on the board first on a two-yard touchdown sneak by quarterback Alan Moran. The play was set up by a beautiful shuffle pass from Moran to Jermaine Dunlap, who played despite a tender hamstring. Paul Wheeler's PAT made the score 7-0 with 9:10 left in the first half. The Cats concluded their scoring with 14 seconds left in the second quarter as senior John Michael hit Ryan McLaughlin with a 32-yard touchdown pass. Wheeler's kick gave the Cats a 14-0 lead at halftime. The Bears scored a quick touchdown on a Reco Philips 49yard run with only 30 seconds gone in the third quarter. Neither team was able to get on the board again though, despite opportunities by both. After it was over coach Olive was obviously pleased to leave Nashville with a win. At the same time he sounded a warning to his players and staff that he is intent on keeping them, as well as himself, focused. "We need to make sure we come into next week's game ready to play because they (Hillwood) will come into Wilkins Stadium ready to play,"

They are 8-0 and ranked No.1. Their average margin of victory is 21 points. The Tullahoma Wildcats are on the verge of greatness following their 38-14 homecoming win over Hillwood Friday night at Wilkins Stadium. But Cats head coach John Olive made it clear to anybody who would listen that although this was a great win and a fine way to celebrate homecoming, we can't waste it by not being ready next week. He knows he has a really good team.
Paul Wheeler gets this extra point up and through the up-rights for the PAT. Holding is Alan Moran . And he knows now is the time they must really begin to lock in that 'can't lose' attitude. "For the most part we played well tonight", he said on the field following the game. "We are so close offensively to doing some things and that's a little frustrating knowing that we're that close. We just have to work harder." One dark cloud over the victory was an injury to senior tailback Jermaine Dunlap. Dunlap was hit on a block early in the third quarter and didn't return to the game. Afterwards Dunlap commented on what he was told about the injury. "They mentioned something
about the MCL maybe but we won't really know until I have an MRI," said the Cats top runner. "I am the type of person that looks on the bright side of things and I am trying to do that now. I'm not sure what happened I never saw who hit me or where they came from." Dunlap's injury will be evaluated and his status known in a few hours. Meanwhile the talented and spirited leader is not the only banged-up body in the Creed McClure Field house getting treatment this weekend. "On the defensive side we've got to get some bodies healed," said Olive. "Our first team had the shutout tonight but we gave up a few yards. We need to go back to playing defense the way we were earlier this year." Tullahoma scored first with 3:04 left in the first quarter on 1-yard touchdown pass from John Michael to Ryan McLaughlin. It was Michael's 13th TD pass this year and following Paul Wheeler's PAT the Cats led 7-0. An 18-yard field goal by Wheeler with 11 minutes left in the first half gave Tullahoma a 10-0 lead. Junior quarterback Alan Moran hit sophomore receiver Laronn Horton with a beautiful 43-yard pass with 6:11 left in the half and after Wheeler's kick, the Cats went to the locker room leading 17-0. Junior running back Chris Burton scored from three yards out with 6:24 left in the third quarter to increase the lead to 24-0 and then Horton, who is destined to be a star for the Cats, returned a punt 35 yards for another score. With 3:32 left in the third quarter Tullahoma had increased its lead to 31-0 and they began looking ahead to next week's war with Overton. Moran finished off the scoring for THS by hitting Chad Locke with a 9-yard touchdown pass with 6 minutes left in the game. When talk on the field after the win turned to Overton, Olive's eyes added a little fire and his voice increased in volume a couple of notches on the dial.

Overton began a drive at its 18 but Daniel Hill made a big stop on a double reverse attempt and forced a punt. The Cats again got the ball at the Overton 38 but this time, with 3:12 left, Wheeler's 32-yard attempt sailed wide right. Overton was forced to punt again with two minutes left. Chris Burton returned the punt 30 yards to put the Cats at the Overton 19. The Cats moved five plays with quarterback John Michael running on three of them and scoring the winning touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 1:20 remaining. The Bobcats moved down the field with their last possession, but Jacob Gray intercepted a Chris McKee pass attempt and the Wildcats ran out the clock to secure the victory. "We challenged them at halftime to come out and make plays," added Olive. "Sometimes you have to go in and see what people are made of. We found out tonight what this team is made of. We called on some leaders to step up and they responded and I'm real proud of that. "This team works really hard," he continued. "We've got a great defense and that keeps us in ballgames. This is just a good football team. I'm just tickled to death for them. You can't explain

The Tullahoma Wildcats showed the true heart of a champion Friday night as they outscored Nashville Overton 14-0 in the fourth quarter en route to a Region 5-4A titleclinching 17-10 victory in Nashville. With the win Tullahoma (9-0, 7-0) moves within one win of its firstever perfect regular season. The Wildcats will host a first-round playoff game November 5 at Wilkins Stadium against the fourth place team from Region 6-4A. But for now the Cats celebrate their second region title in three years and enjoy the satisfaction of having won the region on the home field of the team that beat them last year to win the title. "I sure am proud of our effort, especially in the second half," said head coach John Olive. "It was a great play by Ryan McLaughlin late in the first half to run down that kid and not let him in the end zone. Our defense held them to a field goal and then I thought we came out in the second half and really took over." At the break though it was all Overton as the Bobcats took the opening kickoff of the game and marched 57 yards in nine plays, consuming 4:03 and scoring on a
six-yard TD gallop by Bryan Johnson. The score remained 7-0 through most of the second quarter with the Cats suffering two turnovers. The second one was the play Olive spoke about. Tullahoma was punting from its 38 with 1:01 left in the half when a low snap got away from Tim Tucker and forced him to kick into the Overton rush. The kick was blocked and Kunie Andewole picked it up and ran it towards the end zone for Overton (4-5, 4-3). McLaughlin came out of nowhere and wrestled Andewole to the ground at the seven. After the field goal the Bobcats lead 10-0 at halftime and the home crowd sensed the upset. But it was not to be as the Cats, similar to the Hillsboro game, came out and took control in the second half. The opening drive for Tullahoma consisted of 16 and 18 yard runs by Chris Burton and moved from the Cats 36 to the Bobcats 16. It stalled there but Paul Wheeler nailed a 33-yard field goal to get Tullahoma on the board at 103. The Cats then tied the game up after Chad Brinkley made a huge stop on Overton's third down. Alan Moran moved the team from the Overton 38 to the 15. At that point he hit McLaughlin, who outfought two Bobcat defenders for the pass,

It was definitely not the prettiest win of the year and it wasn't the most important either, but following Tullahoma's thrilling 17-14 victory over Smyrna Friday night you couldn't tell it by the outpouring of emotion by the players, coaches and fans on the field. For the first time this season an opponent had the football last with a chance to beat the Cats. But in the end the vaunted Tullahoma defense, tested on this night like never before, refused to yield and shut down the final Bulldog attempts to

When it was over relief was the dominant emotion as Tullahoma completed a perfect 10-0 regular season and began to set its sights on its next opponent. The Wildcats will host Kenwood, the fourth place team from Region 6-4A, next Friday night in the opening round of the TSSAA state playoffs. The victory also made the senior class the winningest senior class in the history of Tullahoma High School with a record of 29-5. "It's hard for me to explain what I feel inside right now," said an
emotional Wildcats head coach John Olive, now 83-37 as a head coach. "It's a great accomplishment for this team. They have just played their hearts out that's all I can say. My hat is off to Smyrna though they are a very good football team." The only real negative to come out of the game was a second-half injury to junior Chris Burton that saw him taken off the field on a stretcher in an ambulance. Preliminary reports indicate Burton has full movement and is expected to recover completely. "It looks like he is going to be okay," continued Olive. "Anytime with a neck injury you always want to lean on the side of caution." Much of the game was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to take advantage of the opposition's mistakes. The first blunder was major as Smyrna fumbled the opening kickoff and saw Tullahoma recover at the 26 yard line of the Bulldogs. But as was the case much of the night the Wildcats offense was not able to get untracked. A big sack by the Bulldogs defense forced Tullahoma to punt on their first possession. Tullahoma got its first big play when Chris Burton returned a punt 23 yards to give the Cats a first down at their own 48 yard line. The Wildcats then committed their first costly mistake as a 60-yard TD run by Burton was called back due to a clip. After another Tim Tucker punt for the Cats, Burton intercepted a Jason Oliver pass and returned it 25 yards to the Smyrna seven. The Cats offense continued to misfire though and Paul Wheeler kicked a 20-yard field goal to give Tullahoma a 3-0 lead with 11:56 remaining in the first half. Wheeler was 3-3 on the night and was the Cats leading scorer. On the next Smyrna possession the Bulldogs appeared to be starting to drive the ball when on third down senior Chad Brinkley, as he has done all season, shot in from his defensive tackle position to sack Oliver and force another punt. Just minutes after the ambulance pulled on the the field to take injured Chris Burton to the hospital, ALL of the Wildcats dropped into their knees in prayer. Salmon pinned the Cats back at their own three. The punting battle continued until with 4:30 left in the half the Cats took over at their 20. Tullahoma proceeded to drive 73 yards in six plays, spearheaded by a 34-yard pass from John Michael to Tim DeLaughter. Again though the Cats couldn't punch it into the end zone and settled for the dependable leg of Wheeler. His 25-yard field goal with 1:31 left in the half gave the Cats a 6-0 lead heading into the locker room. The third quarter featured a lot of tough defense and both teams trying to combine the running game with big-play strikes through the air. Neither team was able to do much of
either and the quarter ended with the Cats still clinging to a 6-0 advantage. On the first play of the fourth quarter Smyrna's Mario Taylor fumbled and the ball was recovered by senior defensive end Forrest McCullough, who also had two sacks on the night. Kenwood ended Tullahoma's hopes of a state championship Friday night as the Knights advanced to the second round of the TSSAA playoffs with a 17-14 overtime victory. The loss ended the careers of the most successful senior class in Tullahoma High School history. The loss was especially bitter for

Offensively the Cats just never seemed to get untracked. Kenwood shut down the running game and the Tullahoma passing attack struggled to find any sort of rhythm. The Wildcats punted 11 times, with Tim Tucker averaging close to 40 yards p e r k i c k . B o t h Tu l l a h o m a touchdowns came inside seven minute remaining in the game. A Michael to Ryan McLaughlin pass covered 28 yards for the first score and Michael hit Chris Harrington from 14 yards out for the second touchdown.
All of the "mid-field family" gathers around the Wildcats in disbelief as to their loss to Kenwood. The Wildcats had possession of the football in the final minute of regulation but they were unable to get close enough for Paul Wheeler to try a game-winning field goal. Last week Wheeler nailed a 42yarder for the win but this week he never got the chance as the Kenwood defense stopped the Cats drive and forced the extra period. Though Tullahoma came back
and scored twice in the fourth quarter to force the overtime, Kenwood brought an outstanding team to Wilkins Stadium and was very deserving of their upset. The loss is a disappointing finish to what has been an outstanding football season for these 1999 Wildcats. The final team of the century will long be remembered as one of the alltime great teams.

The Cats stormed back from a 14-0 deficit to tie the score and force the overtime period. Tullahoma took possession first and after Chris Burton's run to the one yard line, a fumble by John Michael on a quarterback sneak at the goal line was recovered by the visitors. What are your comments about this years season?
This has been the greatest football I have ever been on. Team was a word that everyone knew the meaning to. It showed on and off the field. The way we worked together is what separated us from other teams. God Bless all of my team mates and thanks for the memories.
What is your most memorable moment?
When we won the region championship game at Overton. I will never forget the halftime talk Coach Olive gave. It inspired the team to comeback and win. And the final ticks of the clock against Smyrna when we finished 10-0.
What is your favorite game and why?
Franklin County, I have lived there all of my life and it just feels good to beat them. I was fortunate to go 4-0 against them.
What are your plans for the future?
Attend college

Thank you coaches for all your encouragement. You have taught and showed me things I will take with me the rest of my life. The town of Tullahoma is the greatest place to play high school football. I will always remember the great fans that traveled everywhere with us.

Winning the Overton game, which gave us the Region Championship. Just knowing that we got them back for last year was great. And winning the Smyrna game making us 10-0 and the way the team came together to pull it out through all the adversity.

The Overton game because that was a perfect way to show the team coming together when we needed it to and the way we reacted to the coaches at halftime.

To survive boot camp and have a stellar career in the Army and retire a wealthy man.

I am very proud of this years team, coaches, volunteers, boosters in the quarterback club and our community. Our players worked very hard through the winter, spring, and summer to prepare for this season. Though I never expected to go through our regular season undefeated, the hard work of our players to prepare each week, gave us the opportunity. My hat is off and a sincere thanks to our coaches and those volunteers that took on the extra duties this season. Our quarterback club has provided another excellent year of support and our community makes playing football in Tullahoma a unique experience to last a lifetime.
Great group to coach! FUN! FUN! FUN! Any time you win it's fun, but with this group, every night they walked out on to the field, they knew they would win. Probably the most prepared team I have ever been around. They have set a high standard for years to come.

What is your most memorable moment of the year?
Our kids battling back to beat Overton for the region championship in the second half after being down 10-0...... The agony of defeat - the moments spent on the field with senior players agonizing with pain following our defeat by Kenwood in overtime. The moments feel frozen as we were waiting for the field to clear to gather up one last time. What player or players really surprised you the most this season?
Allen Hagler's play at defensive end. He was much better than expected......Aaron Swallom's play at offensive guard was outstanding ....Since we had no deep snappers at one point this year, Chad Locke and Drew Silvertooth really played major roles in our very successful kicking game.....Paul Wheeler - stats speak for themselves. Paul showed great improvement from one year to the next. Any Other Comments?
I am super proud of this Senior Class. A 29-6 win-loss record,,,,Never lost a game to Franklin County, Shelbyville or Manchester.... An undefeated regular season, Most of all I am proud of watching these players grow from boys into young men. Thank you Tullahoma for a most memorable year. Thank You, Mike & Donna for all your hours spent on promoting Tullahoma Football!!

What is your most memorable moment of the year?
Not one moment stands out - the last 3 games of the year are the most vivid. With Dunlap out, our kids battled from behind in all three games (shows character) -4th down and 15 to go..down 14-0 in the Kenwood game, John Michael puts his head down and picks up the 1st down and Chris Harrington making the catch and putting forth the effort to score the touchdown, What player or players really surprised you the most this season?
Jonathan Boyles - First year player and senior - second leading receiver. He turned out to be the "go-to" man when people were doubling Ryan. Very important link to our success....Jerry Luster - junior - able to step up and make a number of big plays after filling the shoes of Dunlap. Any other comments?
We are losing a great bunch of seniors, but they have left behind them a winning tradition which means there is more to come. I can't wait to get started on next season - SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS. Let's just hope the "Machine" doesn't run off the Coaching Staff!

The whole defense. They played great all year. Best defense I have ever coached!! Any other comments?
We lost one battle and won 10 wars. This was a very special group of players, battle tested, game faced, hard nosed football players. I want to thank Burt, Sam and most of all John Olive. The last thank you goes to my wife Dana and son Jake, mom, and Nancy Turner. I love you guys very much!!

Homecoming Week Successful For the first time in over 20 years, Tullahoma High School officials agreed to let the high school students have a Homecoming Parade. After lunch on Friday, the student parking lot started filling up with students, decorated cars, floats, fire trucks, police cars, football players and the Tullahoma Band, who playing most of the parade. The parade started in the parking lot of the high school and headed down Jackson Street, heading to the South Jackson Civic Center. Senior Class President Brad Stockton, who spearheaded the planning of this week's events, had this to say about the parade. "I am just tickled to death that we were able to do this"
said Stockton during the pep rally. "It is wonderful the way that the city of Tullahoma has supported us this season and it feels good to see all of these fans and supporters lined up along Jackson Street this afternoon." Stockton also added "I would like to take this time thank everyone that has helped pull all of the e v e n t s together this week and Thank You Tu l l a h o m a
For All Of Your Support. I am proud to say that I am from Tullahoma!!" Everyone gathered on the grounds of the South Jackson Civic Center for a pep rally. It appeared that people had come from everywhere to join in. One of the school officials stated that he thought this was the biggest pep rally he had ever seen at Tu l l a h o m a H i g h School. Following some cheers and some music from the band, the p a r a d e started back u p a n d headed back
to the high school. And the students were all dismissed. At the Homecoming ceremonies, all of the senior band members, cheerleaders and football players were recognized. Following the presentation of the Homecoming Court, Jenny Sanders was crowned the 1999 Homecoming Queen of Tullahoma High School. And Brad Stockton gave Jenny the traditional Homecoming Kiss in front of the "filled to capacity" Wilkins Stadium. The Senior Class capped of homecoming week be defeating Hillwood 38 - 14. Following the celebration of the victory and the traditional mid-field family meeting, many headed off to the annual homecoming dance.

However it was his running, primarily in the second half, that gave Tullahoma big first downs when they really needed them. He finished with 101 yards rushing and one of those runs, a 21-yard ramble, gave the Cats first and goal at the one and closed the door on Franklin County's chances for a comeback. The Wildcats will travel to Spring Hill next week, the first meeting against their new Region 54A foe from Maury County. Spring Hill lost a surprising 33-0 decision to Portland Friday and should be anxious to take out their frustration on the Wildcats. For Franklin County it gets no easier as they endure a trip to top-ranked Riverdale next week in Murfreesboro.

Overall the performance at Hendrix-Staggs Stadium in Lawrenceburg was not pretty, but nobody plays great every week and championship teams are the ones that can win these types of games and move on and get ready for next

It is crucial that everyone associated with the program put this win behind them and set their sights on the visitors from Bedford County because they have got a very dangerous, explosive collection of athletes. I watched Shelbyville Friday night in their 30-0 victory over Coffee County. The Golden Eagles look a lot like they did when they won four straight region championships in the mid-90's. In fact Olive says when he arrived at Tullahoma that it was Shelbyville that was the team he felt like the Cats needed to shoot for. He felt like when his team could compete with Shelbyville that they would have arrived as a program. They were the measuring stick. His team has arrived. Although they have gone 5-6, 65 in Taylor's first two years this is a different looking Golden Eagles team. They have a couple of running backs, Jaymond Perry and Brian Farrell, plus the talented air duo of Marques Johnson and Karlos McMahon and the individual running of Johnson, all of which will create better skill position ability than Tullahoma has seen this season other than Hillsboro perhaps. It should be a great game next week with a huge crowd at Wilkins Stadium.

"It would make their season to beat us," concluded Olive. "Somehow we have got to convince our kids of that. We don't want to do what we did a couple of years ago when we let them take that Coffee Pot trophy away from us. They are gonna play their hearts out and we need to come out early and jump on them. But just as it appeared the Cats were on their way to victory, the Bulldogs suddenly rose to the occasion. Oliver connected with Salmons for 57 yards and then again from 11-yards out for a touchdown with 7:55 left and cut the Cats lead in half at 14-7. The Cats again drove into field goal range and this time Wheeler kicked a 42-yarder to increase the lead to 17-7 with about two minutes left. However, junior linebacker Wesley Painter, who had a monster game and was rewarded by being named the Joe Orr Realtors Player of the Week, sacked Oliver and the lights went out on the Bulldogs' upset hopes. The Cats now get to enjoy the win for a couple of days and then they must go back to work preparing for the playoffs next week. Congratulations to this team for accomplishing something that obviously, since it hasn't happened in 56 years, is a very rare feat. This undefeated season will be remembered for a long time by this city. Now the Wildcats have an opportunity to add true greatness to their legacy in the postseason. "Kenwood is very athletic and they are very physical," concluded Olive. "It's going to be another ballgame just like this one was. It's going to be a war." Great Season Wildcats!!
