Solomon was one of Israel’s most famous kings.

He’s mostly associated with wealth, wisdom and wives! His is a story of success, potential, and calling – ultimately overshadowed by later decline and even apostasy. But his life has much to teach us as we seek to follow Jesus, thousands of years later. We will focus largely on 1 Kings, written to explain God’s judgement that came in the exile – it’s history with purpose.

After seeing Solomon’s journey, we will turn to the book of Ecclesiastes – a strange journal.

Some question whether Solomon wrote it, but for reasons I’ll explain later, I believe he penned it towards the end of his life.

We need to be careful in approaching Ecclesiastes. It is all Scripture, faithfully recorded, but it isn’t all the truth. Repeatedly, Solomon says ‘I said to myself’ – these musings are not divinely endorsed. We must remember that while Solomon is sometimes right, that doesn’t mean he always is. And nor are we.

As I’ve spent time studying this enigmatic man and then, figuratively speaking, watched as he scribbled the thoughts that became Ecclesiastes, I’ve been challenged to finish well in my own walk with Jesus. And in Solomon’s sober and sometimes extremely dark reflections, I have found some profound and helpful perspectives.

We’re called to walk with the Lord, regardless of how life pans out. Living God’s way is always the right way, whatever the circumstantial or emotional weather.

In a conversation with two other Christian leaders, we were sharing our sadness over another leadership failure. An internationally influential pastor was making headlines because of his disastrous choices. ‘I don’t understand it’, one of us commented. ‘I always thought that he was such a good man.’ And that’s how we tend to categorise character: people are either bad or good, saintly or wicked, strong or weak. But the reality is we are all a mixture, capable of living beautifully or sinning grievously. Perhaps only the heat of temptation reveals the real truth.

As we’ll see, Solomon was also a complex mixture. He was both a brilliant and a terrible leader, leading Israel to become the most powerful kingdom in the Iron Age – but then his decisions led to her decline after his death. He built a Temple to the Lord, but it became infested with pagan worship and was ultimately destroyed. In his early years, he was devoted to the Lord, but later he turned to idols. The wise man lived very foolishly.

Jesus would later celebrate Solomon’s superlative wisdom, and even describe his appearance as glorious, and yet Scripture also records Solomon’s rebellion against God (1 Kings 11:6).

As we begin our new year and this journey of considering a life full of strengths and weaknesses, let’s affirm our own humanity and our need for the help of the Holy Spirit, that we may truly reflect God’s glory, now, today, and all the way home.

Prayer: Lord, aware as I am of my potential to live badly or beautifully, help me today, and in the year ahead. Be glorified in me.

American pastor Rick Warren’s book The Purpose Driven Life is the best-selling hardback book in US history, with over 35 million copies sold: his theme certainly scratched an itch that so many were feeling.

Yet there are some popular voices that rush to inform us there is little or no point or purpose in life. Richard Dawkins, passionate about stamping out the idea of God, offers a bleak message: ‘The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.’ ’1 Another writer offers an even more barren message: ‘We came from nothing for nothing and by nothing.’

The Bible takes a totally different view. King David was promised that one of his offspring would be called to be the builder of the first Temple (that news is echoed in 1 Chron 17:1-15). And unlike his father, who had ‘shed blood’ (1 Chron. 28:3), Solomon would be a bringer of peace. When we turn to other biblical characters, such as Jeremiah, we hear God saying, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you’ (Jer. 1:5, NIV).

Most of us are not called to acts that will be remembered and celebrated throughout history, but God still has purposes for each and every one of our lives. That purpose may be found in major vocational and career decisions, but also in the daily decisions we make to serve, bless, give, reach out, and use the gifts and talents we have been given.

Prayer: As I seek You first, Father, may I live according to Your unique purposes for my life today, and so impact my world. Amen.

Kay and I live on the side of a steep hill, and many cyclists come screaming down its hairpin bends. Some have lost control, resulting in some bruising crashes. As we start our journey, overviewing the life of Solomon, we turn first to another destructive downhill episode – the circumstances of his birth.

The story of King David and Bathsheba is well known, and the details are lurid.

Resting at home while his men were risking their lives on the battlefield, David’s eyes wander, and adultery with Bathsheba is the result. She was a victim, a pawn in the hand of the all-powerful king. But when her pregnancy was discovered, David descended further into manipulative scheming, first trying in vain to encourage her husband Uriah to sleep with her, so the pregnancy would come as no surprise.

When that plot failed, David moved onto a plan B, insisting that Uriah be located in a place of maximum danger in battle. That evil plan was a tragic success, and Uriah perished, leaving David free to take his wife. When we consistently rebel against God and His ways, we don’t stand on level ground. David plummets into deception, desperation and finally conspiracyto murder.

It took an earth-shattering prophetic rebuke from Nathan to bring David to his senses, and finally he admits he was wrong and offers the heartfelt prayer of repentance we find in Psalm 51. As this year unfolds, let’s not begin it on a slippery slope.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

READ 2 Samuel 12:24-25 Ephesians 2:1-14

So the LORD sent a message through the prophet Nathan.

In my teenage years, I was given an unkind nickname by a lad who was my nemesis for a while. He delighted in mocking my rather bent nose. I had acquired it when I crashed my bike, flew over the handlebars and the pavement connected with my nose. The nickname was a constant reminder of my rather ugly feature.

Jesus gave people (like Peter, James and John) nicknames, but having a second name was almost unheard of in Old Testament times. Yet Nathan the prophet, commanded by the Lord, did that when Solomon was born.

The name given by his parents, Solomon, means ‘Yahweh’s restoration and peace.’

And then the new name, Jedidiah, means ‘beloved of Yahweh’. Jedidiah also comes from the same root word in Hebrew as David, Solomon’s father, hinting that Solomon was destined to become the new David, another great king to lead Israel.

Perhaps these two names were given to remind Solomon of God’s love for him, but also as a living sign to his father David: judgement for his sin with Bathsheba was over now, peace with God was restored, and God loved the young Solomon. Even five hundred years later, reflecting on the flawed reign of Solomon, Nehemiah affirmed he was loved by God (Neh. 13:26).

Today, in Jesus, we have peace with God, and are deeply loved by Him. May those truths settle deep in our hearts, otherwise faith will be a journey of constant striving. We serve Him today because we are loved, and not to earn His love.

Prayer: I am utterly loved by You, Jesus. May that truth settle in my mind and my heart, so I live secure in Your grace. Amen.

It’s the cause of heartache for many Christian parents. They raise their children to love Jesus, but then they drift or march away from faith, sometimes into destructive choices. Now the parents carry a double burden – concern for their child, but also shame, feeling they didn’t do enough. The struggle is compounded when they see other families serving the Lord together.

Scholars debate the exact translation of today’s focus verse, but some, including the revered W. A. Criswell, insist Solomon had Nathan the prophet as his schoolmaster. Criswell writes, ‘When the boy was born... David placed his tutelage and his sponsorship and his instruction into Nathan’s hands.’2 Nathan was a great man of the Spirit, blessed with great sensitivity to the voice of God: ‘that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan...’ (2 Sam. 7:4).

Nathan’s anointing led to him being a court prophet, with open access to the king. He carried great authority and was courageous, even confronting David about his sin with Bathsheba. If Solomon was personally schooled by Nathan, he was blessed indeed. But still, he would ultimately make terrible choices. My friend Rob Parsons once remarked, ‘Adam and Eve had the perfect parent in paradise – God Himself.

But still they walked away.’

If you grieve for a child or loved one who has walked away from the Lord, keep praying, keep hoping – and while we all make mistakes, don’t blame yourself for their choices.

Prayer: For those I love who are drifting or marching away from You, Lord, meet them where they are. Amen.

COMPLETING OUR PURPOSE

At around 70 years of age, David was nearing the end of his life. Now he commissioned his son Solomon to fulfil the task of building Israel’s first Temple. But before looking at that episode in further detail, let’s consider the parallels between David and Moses.

Both were disqualified from completing the tasks God originally called them to, and the writer of Chronicles wants us to see the similarities.

David says to Solomon, ‘My son, may the LORD be with you. May you have success’ (1 Chron. 22:11). God affirms Joshua, who will complete the job Moses was charged with: ‘Joshua, no one will be able to stand up against you as long as you live. I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will never leave you. I will never desert you’ (Josh. 1:5).

Both Joshua and Solomon are told not to be afraid (1 Chron. 22:13, Josh. 1:6,7,9). As one commentator says, ‘The language of David’s charge to Solomon clearly demonstrates the influence of the parallel event. All this has led some to identify David as a “second” Moses and Solomon as a “second” Joshua.’3 What is certain is that Solomon was called to embrace the task his father so desperately wanted to complete (1 Chron. 28:3). Perhaps, living this side of eternity, we will not know if we have totally fulfilled God’s dreams for us, although the apostle Paul was blessed with a sense he had completed the mission God gave him. Let’s be diligent, faithful, always open to play our part in God’s purposes.

Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to be distracted or diverted from fulfilling Your purposes for my life. May I be and do all that You have called me to. Amen.

We’re pausing here because David’s actual charge to Solomon to build the Temple merits closer consideration. He had a huge task ahead of him, and David desperately wanted his son to complete it successfully. David gave a charge that is familiar throughout the Old Testament. He encouraged Solomon with the truth that God was with him, the source of his future success. He reminded his son that the calling of God was upon him, as the one uniquely chosen to oversee the building of the Temple. And then he exhorted Solomon to resist fear and discouragement, and to carefully obey the laws of Moses.

This is a clear portrait of partnership and covenant. God gives Solomon a calling and is the source of his success, but the young man had to play his part, walking in obedience and faith. And that’s what it means to follow Jesus.

We are now in a new covenant, co-workers with God (2 Cor. 6:1), commanded to partner with Him as agents of His Kingdom on earth, making and building disciples, and living as human signposts, pointing others to the God who loves them so. That partnership is so well expressed by Paul as he writes to his Christian friends in Philippi: ‘So continue to work out your own salvation. Do it with fear and trembling’ (that’s our responsibility). Paul describes God as our source: ‘God is working in you. He wants your plans and your acts to be in keeping with his good purpose’ (Phil. 2:12-13).

Today, let’s play our part.

Prayer: It's a privilege to partner with You, Lord. Help me to remember that, especially when the journey is hard. Amen.

Few discuss one of the Covid aftershocks – the effect on volunteering. Numbers have plummeted. Writing in the Church Times, one vicar noted that, just 25 years ago, there was such an abundance of people willing to act as church wardens that legislation was introduced, limiting their service to six consecutive years in office. But now, a recent survey reports, ‘there has been a decline in the pool of available volunteers in general in the last few years.’4 Elsewhere, others are less willing to help. The Church Times again states: ‘The Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s Community Life Survey reported that, in 2021/22, only 16 per cent of the respondents said that they had taken part in formal volunteering at least once a month in the previous year.

That figure was 27 per cent a decade earlier.

The sharpest decline – representing an estimated drop of four million volunteers – was over the two years of the pandemic.’5 King David went way beyond blessing and encouraging his young son Solomon. He gave, investing fabulous amounts of gold and other materials. He used his authority to gather leaders to oversee the work under Solomon’s guidance. The purposes of God were fulfilled by a collaborating, hard-working, serving team.

We are not called to spectate but to use our gifts, not just as volunteers, but as those privileged to be called members of the body of Christ. Let’s give, build, serve... together.

Prayer: Bless all those who serve, in my church and elsewhere: grant them strength and grace if they feel unappreciated. Amen.

MISSING THE OBVIOUS

READ 1 Kings 1:1-6 2 Samuel 15:1-12

We’ve seen how David set his son Solomon up for success, calling him to walk faithfully with God, providing resources, and charging Israel’s leaders to support him. But a closer look at David’s dysfunctional family shows his neglect made Solomon’s succession anything but smooth. If you read the story of David’s warring sons, with Amnon raping his sister, and then Tamar’s brother, Absalom, first taking revenge on Amnon and then trying to seize the throne – one thing will strike you over and over: David does nothing. His complete refusal to keep his warring family in order (2 Sam 13:1-18) is about to be repeated.

David’s eldest son at this point, Adonijah, would have been seen by many, including himself, as the natural successor to the throne. He’d have been a popular choice and so, probably frustrated by his fragile father’s refusal to name an heir, Adonijah declares himself king. And as Adonijah pursues the same tactics as his brother adopted, once again David does nothing to stop him: ‘His father had never tried to stop him from doing what he wanted to. His father had never asked him, “Why are you acting the way you do?”‘ (1 Kings 1:6).

David, meticulous in other details, missed the obvious. We can do the same. We can also repeat our failures, setting a pattern of behaviour that will be damaging to those we love, maybe years after we have gone. Sometimes we look back on poor choices and wonder why we were so foolish, so deceived.

To ponder: What might we be missing?

SELFISH AMBITION

FOCUS But he didn’t invite Benaiah or the prophet Nathan. He didn’t invite the special guard or his brother Solomon either.

It’s been said that a wise person learns from their own mistakes, but a wiser person learns from the mistakes of others. But Adonijah wasn’t wise. He had a close-up view of the hurt, estrangement and ultimate death that resulted from his half-brother Absalom’s decisions. They didn’t deter him from launching into a plan to seize the throne.

Surely he was driven by selfish ambition: as James writes: ‘For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice’ (James 3:16, NIV).

So what does this have to do with us, assuming we don’t aspire to royalty? What about our ambitions? Adonijah’s attempt to grab the crown shows we can long for power over others, to control them for our own ends.

I’ve seen the dark impact of selfish ambition in friendships, marriages and churches.

As Adonijah forges alliances with furtive whispers and excludes those who would be faithful to Solomon (including, of course, Solomon himself), we see manipulation at work. And all of this is done beneath a veneer of spirituality, with Adonijah offering sacrifices – again, just as Absalom had done (2 Sam. 15:7-12). Some of the greatest damage done to the world and the church has been inflicted by people who zealously insisted they were serving God, even as they wrought havoc in people’s lives.

Ambition is not wrong. But when it is fuelled by selfishness, or a desire to control or dominate, it is a destructive force.

Prayer: May my aspirations and ambitions be tempered by what it means to follow You, Jesus, the faithful, suffering servant.

With the false coronation of Adonijah, Nathan and Bathsheba knew their lives were in peril. In their culture, opponents to a new king and any other potential claimants to a throne were often eliminated. Nathan was warning Bathsheba: you and your son Solomon are going to die, unless we take action. So, as they planned their conversation with King David, they acted to save themselves. But ultimately their words to David were an exhortation: You’ve promised on oath that Solomon will succeed you. You don’t even know what is going on in the land where you still rule. You haven’t told us your plans, and the whole nation is watching.

David heard a message loud and clear: do the right thing. And in engineering the intervention as he did, Nathan was holding the old (and perhaps forgetful) king to his word. David’s response would be heard by two witnesses, Bathsheba and himself – the right procedure under Mosaic Law when pledges were made.

I am grateful for close friends who love Jesus and me and inspire me to stay true to my own pledge to follow Him all my days. If I wander, I want their correction. The writer to the Hebrews calls us to ‘consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds’ (Heb. 10:25, NIV). The word translated ‘spur one another’ is, as one commentator puts it, ‘the pleasant sense of prodding our brothers and sisters toward love and good deeds.’6 That’s what we need, and what we need to be: friends who prod.

Nathan has got away with being blunt with King David before, but that doesn’t mean he will do so this time. The king has form in not listening to what he really doesn’t want to hear, particularly if it means taking action.

So, as Bathsheba and Nathan act swiftly to counter Adonijah’s false claim to the throne, they speak uncomfortable truth to the ailing monarch – and thankfully, he listens and acts decisively.

David could have reacted angrily, because Nathan was particularly blunt. His words inferred David had been negligent, not paying attention to national matters or consulting with his most trusted advisors.

And when Benaiah, a senior general in David’s army, spoke out a prayer of blessing, that could have created misunderstanding: ‘King David, may the LORD make Solomon’s kingdom even greater than yours!’ (1 Kings 1:37). I don’t think there are too many leaders who would like to hear a wish that the ones who follow them will be more successful!

But David listened, took action and, on a day when Israel might have been torn apart in civil war, instead a time of tumultuous celebration followed, as the coronation of Solomon finally took place. As prophet and priest confirm Solomon’s royal appointment, a massive party erupted in Jerusalem. But the celebrations were not inevitable: David had to be willing to listen and act. As I said yesterday, may we all have listening ears and hearts, especially when we are told things we might not want to hear.

Prayer: When the news that a faithful friend brings about me is not good, help me to listen, and respond rather than react. Amen.

Let’s look a little more closely at the components of Solomon’s coronation, because there are hints there to help us to pray for leaders, especially church leaders. In doing this, I’m not suggesting leaders should all act like kings! I’ve met a few ministers and pastors who seemed to view themselves as princes rather than servants, with terrible results. Let’s pray for the help and anointing of the Holy Spirit for those charged with the heavy responsibility of bringing servant leadership to God’s Church.

Zadok the priest and Nathan as prophet poured oil on Solomon, symbolising both the calling and equipping of God in His life, and the reminder that Solomon was only in the role because the Lord had called him. Pray that leaders who have a sense of divine commissioning will remember that in tough times, because leaders who view the church as theirs are dangerous.

Nathan’s presence as prophet reminds us that we want those who lead to have open ears to the direction and voice of the Lord. Benaiah, a renowned warrior, represented the armed forces, the men of war. Pray that leaders will stand firm on the evil day when spiritual warfare rages around them. And pray for the receptivity and encouragement of the people: the sounds of trumpets, the deafening shouts of joy, all spoke volumes to Solomon. As Jerusalem partied, they gladly declared the truth that they had a leader.

Prayer: I pray for those who lead in my local church, Father. Grant them wisdom and specific direction. Lift them up when the road is hard. Amen.

ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE

The response of the crowd at Solomon’s coronation was stunning, so loud was it: ‘The ground shook because of all of the noise’ (1 Kings 1:40). One translation describes this as an earthquake: ‘the earth was split by their noise’ (RSV), and although commentators agree this was not a literal seismic event, it was obviously tumultuous!

Today, we pause and worship as we remember another King, one ‘greater than Solomon’ (Matt. 12:42, NIV) who also rode a colt, a symbolic act reserved for royalty, into Jerusalem. As we read that ‘the whole city was stirred up’, the word used is eseisthe (from which we get our word seismic)! That word was usually reserved to describe earthquakes and apocalyptic upheavals.

The Palm Sunday crowd were enthusiastic in their welcoming of Jesus, but they didn’t understand it. Two hundred years earlier, the Temple had been desecrated by the Greek ruler Antiochus Epiphanes, who offered pigs’ flesh to Olympian Zeus on the altar. This resulted in a Jewish revolt, led by the Maccabees. When they entered the city in triumph, a similar session of palm-waving took place – the palm was a symbol of Israel.

The crowd were viewing Jesus as a similar liberator, who would free them from the oppression of the Roman occupation. But Jesus was working on a cosmic plan, far greater than freeing a people group struggling at a single point in history. He came as Saviour, Rescuer, Lord. We have greater reason to ‘shake the earth’ with our worship!

Prayer: King of Kings, Lord of Lords, magnificent Saviour, I worship You today.

Thank you for saving me. Amen.

SPARED BUT NOT TRUSTED

READ 1 Kings 1:41-53 Ephesians 4:17-32

The call to forgive those who have hurt us sits at the heart of the Christian message. We have received the wonderful, outrageous grace of God, and we’re called to pass it on. It’s a beautiful idea, until we have to do it. Trust me, I know, and my struggle to forgive is not just located back in my distant past. I’ve still got a few bruises which occasionally nudge me towards bitterness rather than mercy.

But I’ve also seen the call to forgiveness misused, either because someone is pressurised into offering instant forgiveness, rather than taking a journey towards forgiving, or because it’s suggested that forgiving will always lead to a full restoration of a friendship, marriage or business partnership.

Offering grace is not the same as giving trust.

I might freely offer forgiveness to someone who has hurt or manipulated me, but that does not mean that I will rush to trust them again. Trust must be earned.

Adonijah and his gang had blatantly betrayed Solomon and indeed King David, going behind their backs in their hunger for power.

Adonijah fully anticipated a death penalty: that was the culture of the day, and he probably rushed for sanctuary because he knew he had planned to execute Solomon if he, Adonijah, had been successful in seizing the throne. But Solomon spares him, and sends him to his own home, with an exhortation to live a life worthy of respect – or else. Sadly, he didn’t heed the advice.

Forgiveness is free. Trust is earned.

To ponder: What might it mean to take a ‘journey towards forgiveness?’

ACT LIKE A MAN

Andrew Tate is currently facing six legal investigations in Romania, the UK and the USA. He has been dubbed as ‘the king of toxic masculinity’, yet many men listen to him. Unashamedly describing himself as a misogynist, he has amassed 10.7 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) as of June 2025, and, according to Wikipedia, has said women ‘belong in the home’, ‘can’t drive’, and are ‘given to the man and belong to the man as a man’s property’. But while Tate is an extreme example, there’s a lot of confusion today about what masculinity is, and isn’t. Recently I watched a crowd of drunken football supporters outside a pub in Brighton, yelling profanities and threats to rival fans. People shook their heads in dismay as they passed by.

In his final charge to his son, David called Solomon to ‘act like a man’ – and then defined what true masculinity actually is: living faithfully and steadfastly in submission to the Lord’s loving authority. When David uses the term ‘walk’, he describes a consistent lifestyle of faithfulness. As we’ll see tomorrow, David’s next bit of advice was not helpful, but at least he began his final charge to his son with a strong call: be man of God, live for God, and call the nation to live for God. Above all, that’s what I’d like to be: a godly man, someone who inspires others to go all the way with Jesus. One translation of Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 16:13 says, ‘Be men.’

Today, pray for Christian men everywhere.

Prayer: For Christian men everywhere, I pray: may they be like the ultimate model of masculinity – You, Lord Jesus. Amen.

We began our study of Solomon by affirming that, like us all, he had a mixture of character traits, capable of both good and evil. As we eavesdrop on the final words shared between father and son before David died, we see the sometimes confusing mixture that was David: a man ‘after God’s own heart’, but one capable of selfish scheming, as this episode probably illustrates.

I say ‘probably’ because, as David encourages vengeance against his old enemies and generosity for his allies, commentators are fiercely divided about his motives. Some argue that, in calling for execution, David just wanted to see Solomon’s reign consolidated. They justify this bloodletting by suggesting the condemned were guilty of high treason, a capital offence.

Others take the opposite view. One sighs, ‘The deathbed speech which begins bright with spiritual counsel ends dark with menace.’7 I’m helped by the words of another scholar: ‘The narrator allows the inconsistencies in David’s final words to Solomon, with all of their ambiguity, to characterise Israel’s greatest king. David is a complicated character, sometimes a model of devotion to Yahweh, at other times as self-serving as any king in Israel. When he is humble and “giving”, he receives the blessings of Yahweh. The “grasping” David suffers both personally and politically.’8 A mixture: that’s Solomon, as we will see.

That’s David, perhaps bitter to his last breath.

And that, if we choose badly, can be us too.

Prayer: When I have to make choices about how I react in relationships, grant me wisdom to choose well, and grace to follow through. Amen.

The verses we’re considering today make difficult reading, as those viewed as threats to Solomon’s reign were dispatched at his command. But as we focus on two of them – Adonijah and Shimei – we see that when we ignore clearly set boundaries, we will reap what we sow. Adonijah had been shown mercy, even though he had led a failed coup. Perhaps he’d been surprised at his conditional reprieve. But selfish ambition still simmered in his heart, as his manipulative presentation to Bathsheba demonstrates.

He concedes that God has chosen Solomon for the throne, but he still rues his loss of power. And in urging for permission to marry Abishag, he is scheming again, because one way to lay claim to a throne was to have sex with one of the royal concubines.

As Ryken comments, ‘To possess the harem was to rule the kingdom. For example, when Absalom tried to take the kingdom away from his father, David, he went out on the palace roof to sleep with the king’s concubines.’9 And then Shimei, infamous for being abusive to David (2 Sam. 16:5-13), was clearly told to stay within the confines of the city of Jerusalem – a command that he subsequently ignored, which then led to a death sentence.

Perhaps some of us are right on the edge of making a choice that we will regret for decades to come. If we are marching towards a moral precipice, let’s stop, think, pray, and repent – before it’s too late and we sow seeds that will reap a bitter harvest.

Prayer: Because temptation brings temporary madness, Lord, grant me clarity of mind and strength of will when I meet it.

There’s one word in today’s reading that I find incredibly challenging, and has led me to ask some vital questions of the Lord. It appears in the NIV translation, just one word that says so much about Solomon: except.

Remember that, as we saw at the beginning of this study, 1 Kings was written to explain the reasons for God’s judgement that came in the exile. At the beginning of this chapter, we hear that Solomon married a daughter of Pharaoh, but the writer makes no comment about that decision – we will hear more later. But he does want us to see the compromise that has now appeared on Solomon’s record, as ‘he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.’ These local shrines would ultimately lead to a dilution of pure and exclusive worship to Yahweh and enmesh Israel in the worship of other gods. Solomon should have abandoned them because now the Temple was to be built, with clear definitions for how worship should be conducted. And so once again we see mixture – love for God, mingled with compromise – leading to the inclusion of that ominous word: except.

That has caused me to ask the Lord a specific question about my own life. If my history were to be recorded in heaven, would there be an ‘except’? Where might I be holding out on God? It’s been said that the territory of self is heavily defended.

Jesus met a man who really wanted to become his follower – but there was an exception in the way: his money. What about us?

Prayer: Holy Spirit, show me if there is an ‘except’ in my life. Shatter any delusions that might have blinded me to that stronghold. Amen.

GOD COMES RUNNING

Let me make a statement that could cause raised eyebrows: God seems to have an acute lack of discernment when it comes to what and who He blesses.

A person is trapped in an ultra-legalistic church, where smiles are outlawed and the atmosphere is consistently prohibitive, but meets Jesus there and follows Him. A flamboyant preacher touches down in his private jet and preaches a biblically unsound prosperity message, but during that service a person with a terminal disease is instantly healed – later, doctors confirm a true miracle.

That’s what I mean by my comment about His lack of discernment. God doesn’t wait for our theology to be perfectly aligned and balanced, or for our lives to be consistently aligned with His will – and we should be thankful for that, because none of us would qualify for His blessing if that were the precondition.

Solomon worshipped the Lord at the high place in Gibeon, which, as we saw yesterday, was a bad practice. And yet God met with him there. One commentator puts it succinctly: ‘The Lord’s appearance at Gibeon says more about his divine grace than about Solomon’s obedience.’10 It doesn’t mean God is saying the place or what happened there were fine.

I love the picture that Jesus paints in telling the story of the Prodigal Son. The father figure comes running out to intercept his returning boy, who was motivated more by a grumbling stomach than a troubled conscience. Thank God for His marvellous grace.

Prayer: Your grace so beautifully shows Your wonderful character, Lord. I am grateful: it is truly amazing. Amen.

I have mentioned before that I am a certified LifePlan coach – a facilitator for a two-day, one on one process that enables clients to look back at their history (and glean wisdom from it), look at where they are now, and then create strategies for a healthy future that will align with their life purpose. There comes a moment when I ask a key question: ‘If you were to ask God to fix or change anything for you, what might you ask for?’

The Lord gave Solomon a similar invitation: ‘Ask for anything you want me to give you’ (1 Kings 3:5). Tomorrow we will consider Solomon’s response, but for now, let’s consider what our response might be. Jesus often asked people, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’, and in His teaching about prayer, He encourages us to be people who ask of Him. Sometimes I hit a brick wall in asking, because what I want God to do seems so out of reach, so utterly impossible. But then I hear the counsel of the apostle Paul: ‘God is able to do far more than we could ever ask for or imagine’ (Eph. 3:20). Perhaps some of us (myself certainly included) need to resume our asking.

That’s not to say there aren’t times when we should accept a situation is apparently not going to change, and then submit to God with trust – when someone is very near the end of their life, perhaps then we turn our prayers for healing into requests for peace and comfort. But even if what we ask for changes, the call to ask for God’s involvement continues.

To ponder: Is there a request in prayer that we have abandoned? Is there another prayer request that we might need to revise?

I’LL TELL YOU WHAT I WANT

Given the opportunity to ask for anything his heart desired, Solomon chose wisdom. In initially reflecting on his choice, I wondered if he got it right. My mind went to Paul, who expressed his passionate ambition so clearly – he sought to know Jesus more and more (Phil. 3:10). Perhaps it would have been better if Solomon had asked to grow in his knowledge and love for God, because if he truly did that, everything else would follow. But then I realised that, as Solomon himself said, ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’

Knowing God intimately is the foundation of all wisdom. Solomon was asking for more than insight and information: as he requested ‘an understanding mind’, the literal translation of his request was ‘a listening heart’ and the word used is shomea. Wisdom is more than accumulated knowledge: it is understanding that leads to obedience and application.

In making his request, Solomon also expresses authentic humility as well. He was keenly aware of his lack of obedience and his desperate need for the counsel of God which was vital as he shouldered new, massive responsibilities of leadership. Little wonder that we read God was pleased with Solomon’s request.

As I look back on my life, my greatest mistakes were made because I rushed ahead without intentionally asking for wisdom – usually because I trusted too much in my own abilities.

I’m with Solomon as he understands his limitations. Lord, grant me, grant us, wisdom.

Prayer: I ask You for wisdom Lord, to be received as I walk with You, intentionally listen for Your voice, and respond to what You say. Amen.

It’s the one famous episode in Solomon’s life: faced with a conflict between two women about the custody of a child, his response shows God was already answering his request for wisdom. Relying on a true maternal instinct to reveal the mother’s identity, he settles the case and judges well. But there’s an aspect of this story that can easily be overlooked – both these women were prostitutes who lived in shared accommodation, and so the death of one of their children probably occurred in a brothel. But Solomon grants these women a royal audience. They would have been marginalised and commodified, living every day feeling unseen and disrespected, objects to satiate the lust of paying strangers.

We will see that Solomon had many flaws, but, at this stage of his life at least, it seems he had a heart for the downtrodden and oppressed. This is revealed not only in his actions here, but also in the prayer he offered in Psalm 72: ‘God, give the king the ability to judge fairly. He is your royal son.

Help him to do what is right... May the king stand up for those who are hurting. May he save the children of those who are in need.

May he crush those who treat others badly’ (Psa. 72:1,4).

We follow the Jesus who consistently welcomed into His kingdom banquet those who lived outside of the circles of respectability; He gave a sense of significance and worth to those who felt unseen and ignored. And we are called to be just like Him. Prayer: Lord, enable me to see those who are often deliberately overlooked. In a world of need, give me wisdom to know what to do. Amen.

Chuck Norris, the martial artist and actor, once remarked, ‘Some of the most miserable people I know are some of the richest people in America; they are the most miserable individuals I’ve ever seen.’

At first glance, it looks like this chapter is little more than a celebration of Solomon’s incredible wealth. But a closer look shows us the ultimate jewel in any crown: peace.

Shalom is the Hebrew word rendered ‘peace’ in English translations. And it’s a loaded word: Jim Packer wrote: ’The Old Testament... (uses) one treasure-chest word, shalom. Shalom, translated “peace,” proves when unpacked to mean, not just freedom from war and trouble, sin and irreligion, but also justice, prosperity, good fellowship, and health, and all-round communal well-being under God’s gracious hand.’11 In the New Testament, the word for peace, eirene, is used over 60 times. We follow the One who is so frequently called the ‘God of peace’ – that descriptor is found in Romans, Corinthians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians and Hebrews. He’s the God who spoke peace to the initial chaos of creation, bringing order.

He’s the Jesus who calmed storms.

Poverty obviously brings heartache. But the idea that having more automatically brings peace and a sense of well-being is a myth.

Today, let’s rest in the peace that comes from knowing we are loved by God, and can live peaceably with each other, surely a model for a world so hungry for peace.

Prayer: God of peace, grant peace in our troubled world. Enable me to experience Your marvellous peace today. Amen.

FAMOUSLY WISE

FOCUS The kings of all of the world’s nations heard about how wise Solomon was. So they sent their people to listen to him.

It was an excruciating moment. A journalist was interviewing a Christian who was loudly proclaiming his views at a political rally. The journalist was measured, kind and respectful, and asked the rather aggressive Christian to offer a few scriptures to substantiate his views. Suddenly the bellicose believer grew quiet. ‘Well’, he mumbled, ‘I don’t know where it says that stuff, but I do know it’s in there somewhere...’ The interview abruptly ended as the Christian went back to mindless bellowing. But his biblical illiteracy, accompanied by his shouting, made him – and all he said he stood for – look ridiculous.

As the writer of 1 Kings ends this chapter by celebrating Solomon’s superlative wisdom, he tells us this was what ultimately made him famous and sought after. And surely that should be a picture of the church.

We claim to have discovered the wisdom of the Creator, revealed in Scripture and embodied in Jesus. We believe the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us into that truth. There will always be those who ‘claim to be wise’ (Rom. 1:22) and will sneer at our beliefs and values. But if we are walking with the God of all wisdom and knowledge, immersing ourselves in His Word, and reliant on His help, we should anticipate some who seek us out because we live lives that show genuine wisdom. Let’s be people of conviction – who are confident, not in the volume of our voices, but because we stand upon the foundations of truth.

Prayer: Father, in a world full of confused voices, please create connections where world leaders can find genuine, godly wisdom in Your people. Amen.

CRACKS APPEARING

As we read about the preparations for the building of the Temple, and the deals made to provide labour and materials for the work, I’d like us to pause for a moment. At first glance, it would seem that Solomon’s reign is a runaway success and all is going marvellously. But I want to suggest that when we look closer, we find serious cracks appearing in the foundations of Solomon’s personal life and his reign. Right at the beginning, we saw he worshipped at the ‘high places’ – an ongoing practice that would create serious spiritual issues.

He then began to marry wives from other nations, who brought pagan religious influences. And now he makes a treaty with Hiram of Tyre. a place renowned for its building skills, but God had clearly forbidden covenants with other nations (Deut. 7:3-4). Moreover, not only were slaves drawn from nations beyond Israel (horrifying to us but sadly common practice back then) but the workers from Israel were also dealt with harshly, being forced into building the Temple. The level of the king’s oppressive work demands would be revealed much later when Adoniram, the man Solomon placed in charge, was assassinated because he had been such a harsh taskmaster, for maybe around forty years.

As we will see, God continued to bless Solomon’s life and work, but he was making significant errors even as he sought to honour the Lord in fulfilling his prophetic calling as the builder of the Temple.

Prayer: Lord, I recognise how easily erosion can take place in my own life. Help me to be diligent and alert today. Amen.

The man angrily jabbed a finger at me.

Confronting me after a celebration service that had featured a winsome and humorous theatrical sketch, his voice was shrill. ‘Tell me, right now... where do you find all this creativity nonsense in the Bible? What we need is the Bible preached, pure and simple, full stop.’ I paused. I was irritated, but trying hard not to show it. ‘Why don’t we start at the opening verses of the book of Genesis?’, I queried. ‘“In the beginning, God created...” He’s a designer, an artist, the ultimate Creative.’

And so He is, and we are made in His image, and the ability to create and enjoy beauty reflects Him, whether that beauty is a stunning mountain view, the whisper of the sea on sand, a fabulous statue or canvas, or carefully crafted words in a poem that reduces us to tears. God is not only the designer and engineer who shaped the stunning machine of the human body, but gifted us to create, to partner with Him in beautifying spaces and places.

The description of the inside of the Temple is far more than a design specification; these are words chosen to help us realise that our God, such an amazing artist, was to be reflected in the artistry that shaped the Temple that bore His Name. Today, the era for a Temple made of hands is over.

But this weekend, let’s take time to notice and appreciate beauty, wherever it is to be found – and let’s give God, the artist, glory and praise as we do so.

Earlier in our study we saw the power of just one word: except. And now, with just another single word, we see further erosion in Solomon’s life. The writer of 1 Kings doesn’t judge Solomon for living in a fabulous palace – it could be argued that’s what monarchs do; their residences reflect their role. But notice the transition between chapter 6 and chapter 7: in the original Hebrew, 1 Kings 7:1 begins with the word ‘But.’ The writer is pointing out an uncomfortable truth – Solomon spent almost twice the amount of time building his own house as he did building the Temple.

The subtle suggestion is he has become distracted, and his priorities are out of order.

We all enjoy nice things. When we began in ministry, we didn’t know how we would survive. Kay and I know what it is not to be able to afford a winter coat for our young daughter, because money was so tight – and no credit cards were available. These days we no longer face those challenges, and given the choice between experiencing lack or provision, I’d obviously choose financial stability. But when comfort becomes king, and we don’t just have money, but money has us, we’re heading for trouble. It comes as no surprise that Jesus singled money out as the greatest rival contender for our worship.

This is complex. I want to steward, save, give, plan and be responsible with money. But when preoccupation becomes obsession, we need to ask the Lord to help us to realign our priorities.

Prayer: I know I can only serve one God – and that is You, Lord, not money. Show me how to think and live with my priorities in order. Amen.

PRESENCE

My experience of church has been in settings where there’s a gifted worship team, wellproduced graphics and lighting, large video screens and, generally, good production.

And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with crafting a high standard experience. God can meet us when we harness our creative abilities to help us to present and celebrate the good news of the gospel. But while I don’t want to be simplistic, I also want to say that with all of these technical resources at our disposal, there is no substitute for the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in our midst. Without the presence of God, the elaborate and expensive Temple was nothing less than a shell, a mere building.

As we gather to worship, let’s not just spectate, or go through a ritual, but come hungry for God to work amongst us, and even to interrupt our well-ordered routines if need be: that’s exactly what happened here, as the glory of the Lord filled the Temple. That’s not to suggest the presence of God and the work of the Holy Spirit always results in something epic, awesome, earth-shaking. The Holy Spirit can be gently working, for example, when Scripture is preached faithfully. Shaping our character, granting us help, producing fruit in our lives, convicting us of sin when correction and repentance is called for – all these are aspects of a ‘move of the Spirit’.

Let’s be open, expectant and responsive whenever God moves among us, however He chooses to do His work.

Prayer: Make Your presence known, Lord, among Your people. And may we understand what a true move of Your Holy Spirit is. Amen.

AGAIN, PRAY FOR LEADERS

It was a beautiful day, as the Temple was consecrated, the glory of God was manifested and Solomon blessed his people, exhorting them to follow God wholeheartedly. But as we’ve already seen, cracks were appearing in the foundation of his own life. Even as he called others to holiness, he was compromising, which is probably why God challenged him again.

It’s entirely speculative, but is it possible that Solomon leaned too hard on the truth that God had called him to be the one who would build the Temple? Did he believe this made him special, and so deceive himself in thinking he didn’t have to be diligent about his own personal walk with the Lord?

Being a Christian leader is dangerous. We have a sense of calling, which is why we have embraced the vocation of ministry. But that doesn’t mean we can let things slip. As we handle truth daily, it can become just theory.

We can approach Scripture as material for a sermon rather than as instruction for our own lives. And I’ve met too many Christian leaders who, blessed with success, felt the churches they led were ‘their’ churches rather than God’s, that they were special and the usual rules didn’t apply to them.

This sense of entitlement usually meant these leaders didn’t work as hard to be as disciplined as others. The great apostle Paul was concerned lest the same thing happen to him, as he ran the marathon of faith.

Pray for those who lead in God’s Church.

Pray for me, please.

Prayer: Father, may those who lead others tend to their own lives and disciplines. Save them from self-disqualification. Amen.

Earlier this morning, grimacing at a daunting list of to-dos, I felt weary to the bone – soultired. Yesterday I wrote about Paul running the marathon of the Christian race. Today, I felt like jogging to a slow halt, sitting down on the pavement and ordering pepperoni pizza. I decided to ask God why I felt this way, but that didn’t help immediately either: my question was met with stony silence, as happens most of the time when we pray (or when I pray, anyway).

But an hour or two later, I think I’m getting some clarity, and it looks like this: sometimes the demands of following Jesus just seem... relentless. Our jog of faith slows to a halt because we feel buffeted by endless shoulds, musts and oughts. We give but feel it’s not enough. We read Scripture but worry that we should read more. Last week Kay and I spent over three hours talking to a couple of bruised ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses, but I came away wondering: had I been wise? Had I said enough, or too much?

The writer of 2 Chronicles gives us additional information about the Temple dedication – fire from heaven fell. In Scripture, whenever this happened, it signified God had accepted the sacrifice. God was saying, ‘Yes, you’ve done well. I’m pleased and satisfied with your efforts’ (Lev. 9:23-24, 1 Chron. 21:26, 1 Kings 19).

Could we do more? Always. But can we rest in what we do for God, making ourselves available to Him, but refusing anxious drivenness in our service for Him? Prayer: Father, I want to serve You fully, but save me from the anxiety of believing, wrongly, that what I do is never enough.

Amen.

WHAT NOW?

FOCUS The LORD appeared to him a second time. He had already appeared to him at Gibeon.

It was a conversation shared with a friend just last night. He has walked with the Lord for decades and taken some radical faith steps. Now he still wants to be sure his heart is available to whatever God wants.

Refusing to settle, he is actively making himself fully open to whatever God has in the next chapters. He has chosen well, and he embodies this truth: following Jesus is a daily decision. Obviously, that doesn’t mean repeated conversions – I say that, because I’ve been in churches where some people get ‘saved’ every Sunday! But dedication and focus need reiteration. Yesterday’s vows don’t guarantee today’s faithfulness.

At the beginning of a chapter giving an overview of Solomon’s political and economic practices, God appears to Solomon a second time. Twenty years have passed, and the king has experienced incredible blessings and success. Now, he is at a junction moment again, and the Lord offers promises and warnings: which way will he take? The words God spoke to Solomon almost precisely mirror what Solomon had said to Israel (1 Kings 8:61). God was saying: Solomon, will you walk the talk?

In the past, by God’s grace, Kay and I have taken some huge steps of faith. The question is simple: what about now? Will we still choose to walk with Jesus and fulfil His purposes? I pray we will keep choosing well and, whatever season we find ourselves in, we will decide for God, today and every day, until we are safely home.

Prayer: Lord, I want to walk steadily and faithfully with You, available to do whatever You call me to. Enable me.

In one of the most famous pilgrimages in history, the Queen of Sheba travels one thousand miles to meet and spend time with Solomon. His wisdom was known and celebrated far and wide (obviously without the communications abilities we enjoy), and so now she comes to hear him for herself.

This lady was discerning: we read that ‘she came to test him with hard questions’ (1 Kings 10:1, NiRV). She was ready to expend enormous time and effort in search of the truth – a challenge to all of us who own Bibles and believe them to be God’s Word to humanity – and she wanted to know that Solomon was the real deal.

Sometimes I feel despair, not only because of biblical illiteracy among believers, but also at the gullibility of some. There are Christians who rush to accept everything their favourite preacher or Bible teacher says or writes; a ‘prophet’, sometimes self-appointed, makes a pledge that something epic is about to happen, and thousands of excited but unthinking followers jump on the internet-fuelled bandwagon to spread the word.

One writer says of the queen, ‘She was a sceptic of the healthiest kind: although she did not believe everything she heard, she was always open to believing the truth.’12 Instead of immediately swallowing everything we hear as truth, let’s heed Paul’s command to ‘Put everything to the test. Hold on to what is good’ (1 Thess. 5:21).

Let’s apply that to all we hear and read – including the content that comes from me!

Let’s pause for a moment. We have spent the last six weeks studying the life of Solomon in the first twenty years of his reign. We’ve seen cracks appear in his character from the earliest days, but nevertheless God’s kindness and patience continued, granting him fabulous wealth and political success.

But now, his downfall is captured in just one chapter – and as we will see when we look at it closely, it makes for horrendous reading. Poor decisions made at the start of his reign were multiplied, triggering the judgement of God. What began with such promise ended so tragically.

I’ve seen this principle at work repeatedly in the lives of fellow Christian leaders.

Some have worked tirelessly for the Kingdom, achieving great things and obviously walking in God’s favour. But then, small inappropriate steps, be they financial, sexual, or leadership abuse, have led to a pattern of behaviour that ultimately brought downfall. Now few remember all the good they did: the legacy of their earlier years is eclipsed by the follies of their later years. I make no judgement here, because we are all capable of making destructive choices. As we look a little more closely at Solomon’s downfall, let’s be sober, vigilant and resilient, conscious of our own fragilities, eager for God to help and sustain us. Yesterday I heard from my friend, Dr. R.T. Kendall. Celebrating his 90th birthday, he spoke of his prayerful desire to finish well. May we all echo his prayer.

Prayer: I don’t want my life to be marked by disastrous choices. May I create a good legacy for You and Your Name. Amen.

To understand Solomon’s sad ending, we need to go back to his beginning. Right at the outset of his reign, we read that ‘Solomon got married to Pharaoh’s daughter’ (1 Kings 3:1). At first this looked like an innocuous act; a political alliance and little more. But Solomon acted in clear defiance of the law.

Speaking of foreign women, a prohibition was given: ‘Don’t marry any of their people.

Don’t give your daughters to their sons. And don’t take their daughters for your sons’ (Deut. 7:3). This legislation was because foreign women brought foreign gods into Israel, ultimately turning the people from faithfully following the Lord. Now we see the ultimate result of Solomon’s steps into disobedience. It was all a matter of trajectory, because when we actively rebel against God, we don’t stand on level ground.

As we saw earlier, but it’s worth repeating, rebellion is always a downhill pathway.

One commentator offers a stark warning: ‘A small difference in trajectory can make a big difference in destination... sin often begins with what may feel like a minor concession—maybe an allowance for this shortcoming or a brief indulgence for that desire. But that simple change of trajectory can set you on a course to a deadly destination.’13 I’m challenged today to face the question: am I continuing to climb to greater heights of maturity in cooperation with the Holy Spirit at work within me – or sliding slowly but certainly downhill?

Prayer: Even if the road uphill is hard, may I take it, enabled by Your power and strength at work within me, Father. Amen.

A MATTER OF THE HEART

READ 1 Kings 11:1-4 Proverbs 4:23-27

FOCUS He didn’t follow the Lord his God with all his heart. So he wasn’t like his father David.

As we read these opening verses of 1 Kings 11 again, notice how many times the writer refers to Solomon’s heart. Warning against marrying foreign wives, God spoke of the heart change they would bring to Solomon: ‘you can be sure they will turn your hearts toward their gods’ (11:2). And then, two verses later, the heart shift was confirmed: ‘his wives turned his heart toward other gods. He didn’t follow the Lord his God with all his heart’ (11:4). In the early days, flawed as he was, ‘Solomon showed his love for the Lord’ (1 Kings 3:3). The word used here for ‘love’ is the very same word used at the end of the story to describe the king’s relationship with foreign women. A change of heart led to a change of behaviour – an awful and shocking change, as we will see.

All of this brings us back to the truth that Christianity is no mere religion; it is not an ideology, a set of rules to live by, a way to self-actualisation. At its core, it is a walk of friendship, faith and love between us and the living God, a relationship kept alive and vibrant as we talk with Him each day, respond to His prompts, and seek His direction. Faith is a matter of the heart.

Ironically, Proverbs 4, which was probably written by Solomon, tells us to guard our hearts carefully. As I've mentioned previously, it's been said that true wisdom is learning, not just from our own mistakes, but from the mistakes of others. Solomon’s sad ending can act as vital education for us all.

Prayer: I love You, Lord. May a bright flame of love for You always burn in my heart.

Save me from faith that is mere theory.

Amen.

Writing about the life of Solomon, author Bill Crowder recalls a conversation with a ministry colleague. ‘As we were driving, Alex became unusually quiet. I finally asked what he had on his mind, and he responded, “I have a question, but I don’t want to offend you... Why are old pastors so bitter?”14 The writer of 1 Kings casually remarks it was an older Solomon who changed for the worse – although this chapter describes him when he was probably no more than fifty.

Crowder went on to say that he and Alex agreed this was not true of all elderly people who had spent their lives in ministry, but that it certainly was a problem. Perhaps their souls had been soured by many years of being unappreciated, in some cases underpaid, and being the target of what is often unfair criticism. But what struck me about the conversation was that it referred to people whose love for God had compelled them to embrace a difficult vocation – and yet bitterness had crept in.

I love being around older people, perhaps because, these days, I count myself among them! But I’ve noticed life has a tendency to either weather people beautifully, or disfigure them. Life is what we get when we expected something else – unwelcome surprises come to all of us. Some older folk remain bright-eyed, hopeful and kind, while others simmer with anger and vent their frustration by grumbling, making them and those around them unhappy. I’d like to be a hopeful, joyful older person.

Prayer: God of grace, as I grow older, may I grow in grace. Amen.

I’ve written about it before, but the moment is seared in my memory. Beginning my first day as a Bible college student, I sensed the anticipation in the room as our Old Testament tutor entered. I thought he’d launch into Genesis, but he had a more devastating message. ‘According to statistics we’ve gathered, ten years from now, half of you will not be walking with Jesus. Guard your hearts and your faith.’

We were incredulous. Surely we were not likely to abandon faith? Some had given up lucrative careers to pursue theological training. Others were mature students, seasoned Christians. I decided our tutor must be wrong. Tragically, he got it right, and some of those eager students ended up in prison cells. We may be saved, but we still have to contend with the sinful nature – a truth Paul makes clear.

The words used to describe Solomon’s drift away from God are intended to shock us. He embraced a life of unbridled excess, with his multiple women, and even worshipped an Ammonite ‘god’, Molech. Child sacrifice was associated with such worship, which is probably why it was singled out as deserving God’s hatred. Human beings adrift from God are capable of unspeakable evil. But the reverse is also true. When we walk close to Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to shape and empower us, we can make a significant impact on our world.

Let’s choose well today, in the knowledge that yesterday’s commitment is no guarantee of faithfulness tomorrow.

Prayer: Shocked as I am by what we humans are capable of, I ask this of You, faithful God: keep me close. Amen.

DAVID AND SOLOMON

READ 1 Kings 11:6-9 1 John 1:1-10

In this episode, Solomon is repeatedly compared negatively with his father David: ‘Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He didn’t completely obey the Lord. He didn’t do what his father David had done’ (1 Kings 11:6). And when I first read those words, an obvious objection came to mind. David loved God, but he was also an adulterer, a scheming manipulator who engineered the death of his lover’s husband. So how could he be described in such glowing terms?

Perhaps the answer is that David ultimately returned in repentance to the Lord, even though it took a prophetic prodding from Nathan, in the case of his adultery and the arranged death of Uriah. Solomon, in contrast, not only sinned repeatedly, but drifted into utterly evil worship. In many ways, he was without excuse – we’re reminded that, prior to this moment, he had enjoyed two epic encounters with God. And he never repented.

We all fail. But when we fall, let’s get up quickly, turn from what we’ve done and accept God’s grace and forgiveness.

There’s actually encouragement here, because in this passage, David is described positively and no mention is made of his sins. Perhaps that’s a clear indication that God’s forgiveness does indeed cause Him to ‘remember our sins no more’ (Heb. 8:12, NIV). We can all tend to define ourselves by our worst moments. Do we live in ongoing condemnation for that which God has determined to forgive – and forget?

To ponder: Is there a guilty moment in our own personal history that we tend to define ourselves by?

LOSS AND THE LOSER

READ 1 Kings 11:10-40 John 10:1-10

FOCUS Then the Lord brought an enemy against Solomon.

The enemy’s name was Hadad.

He had it all. A successful business, a beautiful home, a prestigious brand car, and he enjoyed amazing holidays. More importantly, he had the love and support of his wife and the respect of his children. And then, mainly due to his abuse of alcohol, he decided that he needed more. Just one year later, his business is collapsing, his divorce pending, and the family home has been sold. He feels utterly wretched and would do anything to turn back the clock.

God’s judgement of Solomon, although delayed because of the Lord’s promises to his father David, were all about vulnerability and loss. The word used to describe Hadad, Solomon’s initial enemy, would later be used to describe Satan. And let’s be clear: while Satan promises much in the slick negotiations of temptation, he is consistently the thief, the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. The word Jesus uses to describe Satan’s character and objectives is ‘thief’, klepto in Greek, from which we get our word kleptomaniac, which means to steal compulsively and consistently. Thieves are cunning – they come quietly, in the shadows, with one objective: to take what is not theirs.

So it was with Solomon, as the expanding kingdom that he’d led, once so glorious, would mostly now be torn away from his descendants as promised judgement fell.

Satan loves company. Let’s be aware of his schemes and not be fooled. Making a deal with darkness always has the same result, without fail. It’s loss.

Prayer: Father, I want to live with my eyes wide open, fully aware of the wiles of the enemy. Help me to be vigilant. Amen.

After forty years, the sun finally sets on Solomon’s reign as he dies. His epitaph is brief and obscure: we are simply told more information about his life and work is in the royal archives – which have never been identified. The young king began so well. His desire for wisdom was approved by God and made him world famous. He had intellectual wisdom, but he came to live as a fool. It’s not enough to know the truth – we are called to walk in it, apply it, make right choices in the light of it. James makes it clear in his hardhitting epistle: when we know the truth, but refuse to apply it, we move into selfdeception (James 1:22).

We Christians can also live as fools in our church lives. John Ortberg gives us a familiar example: ‘Paul says that as we relate to each other we are to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to the Lord in our hearts and giving thanks to God at all times. But even in the church we end up spending more time fighting about the kind of melodies we should sing, and whether the Lord God prefers organ or guitar. People split churches over how loudly the songs should be amplified. We are ridiculous.’15 As we turn to Ecclesiastes, we will consider words scholars believe were written by Solomon in his later years, words that have been described as a lament about the frustrations of life. May we come to our latter years with joy and unwavering commitment to Jesus: celebration rather than lament.

Prayer: May I not just know what is true, but, empowered and shaped by Your Spirit, apply what is true in my life today. Amen.

It is a fast-growing, vibrant church. The lead pastor is a brilliant communicator.

Boyishly handsome, he and his wife dress like fashion icons. More importantly, God has blessed their ministry. Starting with a handful of people, in an area of America not noted for Christian values, the church they lead has seen incredible growth. I was privileged to speak there a couple of times, but felt uncomfortable during the services.

I could never be a regular attender there: I don’t have the energy to be that excited on a weekly basis. Everything about the songs, the excited worship style, and the shared testimonies of triumph and victory seemed to say excitement was required, even demanded.

Jesus is wonderful. His way is the way. Our message is life-altering, and eternity ahead is bright and beautiful. But in the meantime, life can be hard, even harsh. And as we begin to look at Ecclesiastes, Solomon’s musings about life ‘under the sun’ – life on planet Earth – we’ll see that even with God, our days can be grinding. The great American novelist Herman Melville once called it ‘the truest of all books.’16 On my last visit to that church, I spoke about my own experiences of clinical depression.

And it seems the leader did not appreciate my subject choice. That makes me sad for the people there who wrestle emotionally, and for how the insistence they be happy all the time will add to their pain. Life is hard. If in doubt, ask Solomon, the man who had it all.

Prayer: I pray for Your Church, Lord. May it be a place where we can be authentic about life – its joys and struggles. Amen.

I remember the day when new neighbours moved in next door. The man of the house was an explorer: climbing Mount Everest was one of his many achievements. I was hoping to spend an evening hearing about his adventures and discovering what it means to take a trek to the top of the world. Not that I want to make that climb myself. I have no desire to spend weeks of my life with snow blowing into my face, trying to prevent my nose from turning into ice and wondering if I have enough oxygen. My new neighbour’s arrival meant perhaps I could learn from his experience.

Because he’s been, I don’t have to.

It is only in recent history that the authorship of Ecclesiastes was questioned, and so I am going to take the traditional view that Solomon wrote it. He calls himself ‘the teacher’ and the word ‘Ecclesiastes’ means ‘preacher’ or ‘one who addresses an assembly.’ Over the next six weeks, we’re going to thumb through Solomon’s journal, and uncover some surprising secrets. As we ponder his expedition in pursuit of peace and happiness, will we listen and learn, or stumble on, insisting on making our own mistakes? Jesus spoke of ‘calloused hearts’ (Matt. 13:15, NIV). It’s said of some, ‘You can’t teach them anything’. Could that be said of us? One commentator puts it like this: ‘“Why make your own mistakes?”

Solomon is saying to us, “when you can learn from an expert like me instead?”’17 Sadly, I never did get to spend an evening with that neighbour.

Prayer: I want a humble, teachable heart, Lord. Thank You that I can learn, in Your Word, from the triumphs and failures of others. Amen.

LIFE UNDER THE SUN

Our reading today contains the words that most people quote when they think of the book of Ecclesiastes: ‘Vanity, vanity!’

(The translation we use renders this verse ‘Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!’).

A better translation would be that life is like smoke: the Hebrew word hevel is used around thirty times here. Sometimes it means ‘temporary’, at other times ‘absurd’.

Right at the outset, Solomon wants to drive a stake through the idea that life itself always feels meaningful or purposeful. But while his initial and immediate judgement on life is devastating, Solomon gives us an early clue about the source of his dissatisfaction and the remedy for it, as he uses a little phrase, ‘under the sun.’ Solomon uses it to describe his perspective on life that is disconnected from God – literally ‘under the sun’. It’s a phrase he will return to repeatedly.

Being a follower of Jesus Christ can be a complex, exhausting journey, as the Bible concedes – we can get ‘weary in doing good’ (Gal. 6:9, NIV). Sometimes we’re tempted to think it would be easier to live without God – just doing what we want, without thought of morality or eternity – perhaps that would be easier. But Solomon disagrees. Life that’s just ‘under the sun’ is no life at all. And we have a New Testament that affirms the truth – real life is found only in Jesus. There’s more to life than stuff, He teaches. To walk with Him: for this we were made. Nothing less will ultimately satisfy.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You have said that life is not just about what I eat. Teach me how to truly live. Amen.

WEEKEND 21/22 FEB

CREATION OR JUST SCENERY?

READ Ecclesiastes 1:4-11 Psalm 19:1-14

I am so grateful to be able to spend much of my time in Colorado. It’s an incredible mix of mountain ranges; there are sandstone canyons and rushing, white-water rivers.

It’s beautiful and diverse. Creation beckons us to worship the One who made all of this. And yet, when we take a ‘under the sun’ view on life and cut God out of the picture, even awesome scenery can fail to move us, as Solomon discovered. The precise rhythms of planet Earth speak to the believer about God’s wonderful engineering gift; the rising and setting sun speak of His daily faithfulness, as Jeremiah celebrated (Jer. 31:35-37). But Solomon just saw dawn and sunset as an example of predictability.

Life without God simply goes in circles. ‘The sun rises. Then it sets. And then it hurries back to where it rises’ (Eccl. 1:5).

You live, you die. There’s no beauty in that rushing river – it’s just on its way to the sea, as always. There’s no design or genius to the earth: when we refuse to acknowledge the signature of the Creator, it’s all just the accident of an explosion, flood or erosion.

It’s like wandering the halls of the Louvre but not knowing of any artist to celebrate.

The wonders we see and the music we hear – it’s all of no consequence, says the Teacher.

Sound bleak? It is. Perhaps we can find time to enjoy the art show playing nearby, or wander in a wood or enjoy the wonderful light of early springtime. Tune into the birdsong. Worship and give thanks.

Sir Francis Bacon, the English author, courtier and philosopher, famously said ‘Knowledge is power.’ Credited as being a catalyst for the scientific revolution of the 16th century which saw a transformation of ideas in physics, astronomy and biology, Bacon was a barrister, Member of Parliament, and a knight. But knowledge didn’t solve all his problems. He wrestled with debts, became the prosecutor of his previous friend and generous benefactor, Lord Essex, and then suffered public disgrace for corruption, ending up in the Tower of London. His marriage failed and he died in debt.

Knowledge is vital; it’s important that we educate our minds and study. But not everything can be fixed by a university diploma or degree. Solomon wants us to know that knowledge has limited power. There are mysteries that no laboratory experiment can resolve and no expert can explain. And then life is twisted because of the fall of humanity and no amount of information gathering can straighten that fundamental problem out.

Solomon was a diligent student; he uses two words to describe his relentless search for knowledge that mean seek and explore.

They speak of practical experimentation.

Solomon’s ‘education’ wasn’t just theoretical: he went all out and lived out his ‘studies’ with wine, women and song.

By all means, let’s gather knowledge. But let’s not fall into the trap of believing that knowledge is sufficient for living. We need wisdom: the wisdom of God. Prayer: Lord, help me to value knowledge, but not to place my trust and hope in just accumulating more information. Grant me wisdom. Amen.

As we consider this second chapter, I wonder if you’ve spotted a tell-tale word that’s repeated in the royal journal? It’s the little word ‘myself’ that crops up over and over again. As Solomon begins to experiment with pleasure, all this effort was centred around him. His life was a dedicated act of self-worship, gratification, grabbing. Self, literally, was king, and it led to some toxic self-talk.

Let’s not miss this telling disclosure, because understanding it is a major key to the door of the real ‘good life.’ Happiness is never found in self-obsession. All the grabbing in the world won’t fulfil us, because we’ve been created to find delight in giving away, in serving. The idea that it’s better to give than receive is not just a slogan for a cheesy greeting card – it’s the biblical truth.

I’m reminded of a dear friend who, years ago, blessed our family with a random act of generosity. I protested and said we couldn’t possibly accept his kindness.

With a twinkle in his eye, he replied, with mock sternness, ‘Now don’t you dare rob me of the joy and blessing of giving, Jeff.’ There’s something profoundly rewarding about giving, about serving and about freely forgiving. It isn’t just that we feel magnanimous or powerful – we connect with our purpose. What an irony: satisfaction is found not in finding, but in losing. Jesus poured Himself out for others, in life and death. As His followers, we are called to be like Him. Prayer: Lord, grasping and grabbing is so easy to do and giving is often so hard. Help me to think and act differently. Amen.

PLEASURE

As Solomon continues his hunt for happiness, he turns from the morally neutral enjoyment of the natural wonders of the world and moves past seeking knowledge into full-blown hedonism. As we see in today’s Going Deeper, he gives himself fully to pleasure. But before he gives us any further details, he once again lets us know the result of his ‘project fun.’ He stamps that word hevel (smoke) over it all.

That doesn’t mean that Solomon turned into a killjoy – he mentions pleasure no less than eight times in Ecclesiastes. Old Testament thinking celebrates good things (especially hospitality, food and drink) as God’s provisions, to be richly enjoyed – as Paul echoed in his letter to Timothy.

And it’s vital we don’t hear his words as a denunciation of fun and laughter. I love laughter and believe that God does too. Life without laughter is a barren desert. There’s something medicinal about a hearty belly laugh (Prov. 17:22). Laughter can bring relief, delight and even understanding; great comedians show us life’s idiosyncrasies.

What is being exposed here is the madness of superficial living, where we exist for a thrill or a drunken buzz on a Friday night. Because pleasure is temporary, it ultimately won’t satisfy. Pleasure won’t give us a sense of purpose, especially when it’s used to distract us from the leanness we feel in our souls. In a world where many are numbing themselves to death, we are called to a different way.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for good pleasure.

Help me to enjoy life as I honour the healthy boundaries that You lovingly provide. Amen.

MORE THAN WISDOM

READ Ecclesiastes 2:12-16 1 Corinthians 15:20-28

FOCUS A person who is foolish lives in darkness.

Today I’m sporting a spectacular bruise.

Jet-lag robbed me of sleep last night and so I decided to get up to ponder Solomon’s journal at 3am. Anxious not to wake Kay up, I tiptoed across our pitch-dark bedroom and slammed into a chest of drawers. The noise of the collision and my unChristian muttering woke her up immediately. Marching around darkened rooms is a bad idea. But some people do that with their lives.

As we consider a notoriously difficult journal entry, Solomon compares living without wisdom to being in a darkened room. We’ll stumble around and bruise ourselves.

But then, in his despair and frustration, he acknowledges even wisdom can’t save us from death: the wise and the foolish will both breathe their last. And that’s why, over five decades after becoming a Christian, I still want to continue as an apprentice of Jesus Christ. He really is the way: His wisdom on how to do life works. If there was no life after death, I’d still like to follow His directions.

But let’s never forget Christianity is far more than ethical teaching or even deep wisdom for life. In Jesus is the truth about life and absolute power over death; the ravager of both wise and fool, our ‘last enemy’, death, has been destroyed. Solomon didn’t have the benefit of that perspective.

Let’s give thanks today for the resurrection of Jesus. And let’s remember the resurrection life begins today as we follow in His footsteps.

Prayer: Lord, You give strength and wisdom for today and resurrection hope and life for tomorrow. I praise you. Amen.

Solomon continues to paint a sombre picture of life ‘under the sun.’ He is relentless in his determination to let us know how futile a life without God is. Anyone who views Christianity as a mere crutch for the weak should pay attention to Solomon’s emphatic conclusion: a godless life is no life.

Now he turns his attention to the ultimate futility of work. He refuses to buy into the idea that ‘job satisfaction’ is enough to give our days a purpose. Even the most successful – those able to leave a legacy to their descendants – are warned about placing too much store by that. Not only are we taxed through life and then taxed heavily for dying, but also there are dangers in handing on a plate that which we’ve had to work for. The tabloids are littered with stories of irresponsible rich kids who’ve been handed a fortune but never learned how to live; no wonder the costless cash ends up destroying them. Or, as happened in Solomon’s case, his own son Rehoboam ended up making foolish decisions that tainted his father’s legacy.

All that said, it’s a wonderful thought that we might be able to bless our children, grandchildren, friends and perhaps some Christian organisations when our lives finally end – but striving just to give gifts when we depart isn’t a good enough reason to live. In sharp contrast, Scripture tells us what we do for God will have eternal benefit – ‘our labour in the Lord is not in vain’ (1 Cor. 15:58, NIV).

Prayer: Lord, give me a legacy that is far more than money. And enable me to serve You and Your Kingdom today. Amen 00 57

CELEBRATE

READ Ecclesiastes 2:24-3:8 1 Timothy 4:1-5

At last, there’s the slightest hint of hope in Solomon’s life experiment. It doesn’t last for very long, but it’s worth noting. In short, Solomon says, ‘Enjoy your day if you can.’ This is not an ‘Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die’ philosophy (as some have assumed), but an encouragement to us to find whatever joy we can out of friendship, moments of celebration, and our daily work.

Thinking about those I call my friends, I realise I am close to them because they have a wonderful ability to laugh out loud when life is good. I love people who repeatedly ask the same question in the sunshine, ‘Isn’t this great?’ We’ve all met those who steadfastly refuse to smile even when the day is wonderful; there is a deep, inner sadness in them that refuses to budge, whatever the circumstances.

Of course, in some cases, that is because they battle mental health issues which eclipse the brightest sun.

Truthfully, life is loaded with boring stuff which we endure rather than enjoy.

Christians don’t skip from one ecstatic experience to another. Jesus has washed my sins away, but I still have to wash the car. But there are times when the work we do is so fulfilling, or the food we share is so mouth-watering, that we find ourselves giving thanks. When the good times roll and the days are glorious, let’s delight in them, because the hard truth is they can be in short supply. There are times for smiles and tears, for us all.

A TIME TO DIE

READ Ecclesiastes 3:2 2 Timothy 2:15

FOCUS There is a time to be born. And there’s a time to die.

Ecclesiastes 3:2

It’s something that Christians often say when encountering bereavement. ‘It’s tragic, but it was his time. God took him. The Bible says there’s a time to live, and a time to die.’ And that verse contributes to the idea there is an exact moment in time that God has prearranged our passing. If that time is set, then it’s part of the divine plan, and there’s nothing we can do about it. But I gently disagree, while acknowledging others take a different view. First of all, in this whole chapter, Solomon is simply reiterating the truth that life is seasonal. And then, to a more general point: we’ve seen it’s dangerous to build theology on the musings of Solomon.

Scripture records his deliberations, but that does not mean, as we have said already, that every conclusion is true.

Finally, think about this practically: what about the person who dies as a result of murder, or suicide: was this their time?

And we can hasten our departure with poor eating habits or lack of exercise. If we think that the time of our departure is set anyway, we might be tempted to avoid taking responsibility for our physical health. Let’s be very careful in the way we use Scripture and, as we will see tomorrow, be willing to ask questions when people quickly use Bible verses to justify an idea. At very least, we should consider: is that what this verse really means? That way we will ‘correctly handle the word of truth’ (2 Tim. 2:15).

Prayer: Lord, help me to approach Scripture with an open heart and my mind engaged, that I might understand what is being said. Amen.

SEARCHING QUESTIONS

READ Ecclesiastes 3:9-21 Proverbs 25:1-3

FOCUS He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

I’ve been going through a season when I have increasingly peppered my prayers with questions – about what I believe, what I should do, and why certain things have happened in my life – both good and bad.

Some churches discourage awkward questions, suggesting it’s a sign of a rebellious heart. There can be a conspiracy of silence about awkward issues: heaven, hell, sexuality or eschatology (the study of the end times).

But God not only encourages questions that search for truth (Jesus spent much of His time asking thought-provoking questions) but, as Solomon puts it, He has ‘put eternity in our hearts.’ We were created to ponder the future, the past, and the purpose and meaning of life. Ask questions. Don’t be silenced. Questioning is the only way to maturity and personal growth. And it’s part of being what God made us to be. That said, we will discover not all of our questions are going to be answered this side of eternity – and perhaps some of them will never be resolved.

God alone overviews all things. Our knowledge, no matter how advanced we may consider ourselves to be, is puny by comparison. There will be mysteries in life; that should not prompt us to reject God, says Solomon, but rather revere Him. Another prayer I find myself praying increasingly these days is simple: ‘Lord, I don’t know. Amen.’ And this much I know is true: it’s good for me to ask questions, and it’s okay for me not to know all the answers.

Prayer: Father, I pray for Your church, that we might be a people of healthy questions. In seeking and searching, may we find truth. Amen.

DESPAIR

In chapter 4, Solomon continues to reaffirm the truth that life is hard – but then highlights the values of togetherness and friendship.

Overwhelmed by the suffering he sees all around him (and especially the terrible oppression of the poor), he languishes now in total despair. Like Jeremiah, who regretted he had ever been born, Solomon envies the unborn – believing they have avoided the pain of birth, life or death. But he was wrong. Firstly, he could have made a difference, rather than surrendering to gloomy resignation. Blessed with wealth and power, he could have defended the oppressed, instead of being an oppressor himself at times. Rather than being moved by the tears of those who suffered ‘without a comforter’, he could have comforted many. And Solomon was also seriously misled about the futility of life itself. To have never lived means he would have missed the opportunity to love, laugh, enjoy the warmth of the sun on his back and the sunset at the end of a day; he would never have known friendship, fun or faith.

It’s just possible that one of my readers is in such a terribly difficult place, that you, like Paul, ‘despair of life’ (2 Cor. 1:8, NIV). Perhaps suicide has been on your mind. Can I beg you to think again and to find help and prayer? I’m so sorry for the pain you are in. Because depression is a liar, you, like Solomon, may not be seeing things straight. Life is still yours, a gift from God. Please don’t throw it away.

Prayer: Lord, when I am low, be near.

Bless all those who battle despair today.

Lift their hearts and heads. Amen.

My mind has wandered back to a wonderful birthday party Kay and I attended a while ago. It was hosted on Tower Bridge in London, and I have been pondering what made it such a lovely evening. The food was delightful and the view was astonishing – we enjoyed a glorious sunset over the Thames. There was great music, stirring speeches and laughter. But the real joy of the evening was connecting with friends, some of whom I see regularly and others I hadn’t bumped into for years.

Friendship makes us rich. Fabulously successful business guru Lee Iacocca was told by his father, ‘If you end your life with two or three really good friends, then you’re a success.’ Solomon seems to agree. But vintage friendships don’t drop out of the sky. They demand effort and sacrifice. Some people had come from Asia, Norway, New Zealand and the USA to stand and watch that sunset together. And the hosts sank some serious investment into making it a stunning evening for everyone. I think that Solomon would definitely have approved – what’s the point of having resources, if we don’t share them and make memories together?

So let’s make a phone call, send a note, tap out an email or, much better still, write a card or surprise a friend today with a random act of kindness. Investing in friendship is one of the great joys of life.

And one of the vital pay-offs is that, when the party balloons deflate and tough times come, we’re not left to battle alone.

Prayer: Father God, may I invest in my relationships, that I may be truly rich and precious to others. Amen.

Yesterday we saw the value of friendship – but exactly what kind of friends do we need? Solomon suggests those who tell us the truth about ourselves. A listening ear and a teachable heart are vital. But there’s an additional gem of wisdom here. Solomon speaks about the king who took counsel when he was young but, in his latter years, was no longer quite so open. We learn a young, inexperienced ruler would be better (and more popular) than a stubborn but seasoned veteran. Biblical history is littered with kings who refused to take warnings, even from God Himself: including Solomon.

All of this challenges me greatly. If I think about my strengths and weaknesses, it’s easy to appraise myself in terms of what I was once and not what I am now. History doesn’t guarantee I will hold to the same values as time passes, which is why a character ‘stock check’ is useful once in a while.

In this specific example of being a listening, learning person, we must remember that authority in the kingdom of God is always given, not taken; we allow others to speak into our lives, not because they assume the right or rank to do so, but because we give them explicit permission. Perhaps you consider yourself to be teachable, but your friends might disagree. If they had the chance, would they tell you that you have changed over the years for better, or worse? Why not ask them? And in our conversations, let’s carefully, intentionally, stop talking – and listen.

Prayer: Lord, show me what I am and how I’ve changed – for better and for worse.

Amen.

As Solomon finally starts to seriously peer ‘over the sun’ he advises us about how to treat worship. It shouldn’t surprise us that he talks about the way we approach God – worship – in one breath and then turns his attention to terrible injustices. And that’s because worship doesn’t end when the piano or guitar falls silent. To sing and pray and fight against the oppression of others is part of living a lifestyle that is a seamless act of worship to the Lord. And this is not just an option for those who feel inclined to be ‘fired up’ about social issues – socalled worship that is ethereal and heavencentred but ignores the plight of millions who suffer doesn’t please God at all. Notice too that Solomon is not attacking wealth (hard for him to do, admittedly, considering all his resources), but rather condemning the love of money, which, as the Bible says famously, is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:10).

Thank God for the social conscience that has become part of our buying these days, as we look for fairly traded, ethical goods that are not produced cheaply because of what is little more than slavery. When it comes to making just choices, those who say they believe the Bible to be God’s word should be leading the way. James is blunt about what true worship includes: ‘When widows and children who have no parents are in trouble, take care of them.

And keep yourselves from being polluted by the world’ (James 1:26-27).

To ponder: How can you respond to the needs of the world, without becoming overwhelmed by those needs?

NO POCKETS IN SHROUDS

Recently I attended the funeral service of my friend Larry, my hairdresser for years.

Larry was known throughout our city as a friend to many. He viewed the downtown area as his parish, and through his interest and care, many came to know Jesus. Most weekends he would sit with people whom he’d invited to our church. His funeral was a packed out testimony to a life lived beautifully for Jesus. He didn’t have much materially and had to live in his salon for a few years when business was tough. But he died with a stunning legacy.

It’s an old saying, but worth repeating: ‘You can’t take it with you.’ It’s often repeated in the Bible – God obviously wants us to get the point (Job 1:21; 1 Tim. 6:7). Solomon paints a vivid portrait – we’re born naked and no matter how much we’ve enjoyed while alive, we’ll all die with nothing. Our last breath means all the stuff we’ve gathered is finally taken from our clutches.

So what will be left of us, say, eighty years from now? Our bodies will have faded and died: so will there be those who will be glad that we ever lived? Let’s press the point a little closer – what about an hour after we’ve died? Let’s ensure we leave something of worth to mark our time on this earth: words of love and encouragement; sacrificial generosity; brave decisions; living a life of trustworthy character; and keeping an eye on the promise of eternal rewards from God himself. Stuff is just stuff.

Shrouds don’t come with pockets.

Prayer: God of eternity, may I live well now and leave a legacy of strength and hope after I have gone. Amen.

As Solomon celebrates the value of work, I confess that I bristle. He was a king, and he press-ganged many others to do backbreaking work for him! Nevertheless, his counsel is still true: we’re born for productivity. We’re created to work.

I’ve done a few boring jobs in my time.

For a while, I was a milkman. I was church planting, there was no money to pay me – so the only solution was to get up at 3am to drive my little battery-operated milk cart around in freezing darkness. I’ve worked in retail, cleaned trains and spent a year in a bank in the city of London. Enjoying your work, when it’s not what you really want to do, can be difficult.

But Solomon encourages us to try to actually enjoy the work itself. And bear in mind he has described, in glowing terms, the blessing of being a labourer, as opposed to the sleepless, tense life the entrepreneur might endure. Perhaps some of us need to go to the Lord and ask him to give us joy in what might seem a tedious job. Let’s not wait for that holiday – or worse still, retirement – to find joy in the ordinary rhythms of life, which include our work.

That’s what I’m doing right now as I write this.

I love what I do – most of the time. The variety of teaching and preaching, broadcasting, coaching and writing is a real privilege – but everything has its downside, like the jet lag that means that I’m exhausted and writing this at 3.30am! God give us all the gift of enjoying our labours.

Prayer: Father, may my work be worship and my joy not just be in what work buys me, but in my work itself. Amen.

We’ve reached about halfway in our journey through Solomon’s journal. The sixth chapter is very dark, but is also something of a review of all that’s gone before, so let’s pause for a moment and consider what the ancient king has been trying to tell us. In asking the profound question, ‘Who can be happy?’ He’s lined up an array of characters: the hormonally driven hedonist, the serious thinking philosopher and the fabulously rich fat cat. And none of them make the grade when it comes to contentment.

Solomon drives the point home further by letting us know that, even if we live a long life (two thousand years!) and have a large family, that’s still not a guarantee of happiness. He then sinks into total despair, suggesting death is preferable to life: better, he wrongly suggests, to have never lived than to experience the hollowness of existing. He is not yet ready to include God in the picture. But in the midst of all this bad news, he does offer some vital advice, in the call to live contentedly – which doesn’t come naturally to us. As one commentator puts it, ‘Our desires are always traveling, but never arriving.’18 But we can enrol in ‘contentment academy’ and ask the Lord to help us. The apostle Paul testified that he had learned to be content (Phil. 4:11). Perhaps the words of 17th century Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs can help: ‘Contentment does not come, I say, by adding to what we want, but by subtracting from our desires.’19 Prayer: Joyful God, be my source of joy today. Teach me how to be truly content.

READ Ecclesiastes 7:1-10 James 1:16-18

FOCUS A good name is better than fine perfume.

Ecclesiastes 7:1

Life is a series of thousands of choices.

It’s possible that, today, we might make choices that will affect us for decades.

Solomon wants to help us in those decisions and in this chapter, he offers us a series of comparative couplets to nudge us towards what is best. He calls us to be people of character (who have a good name), who know how to die as well as live, and who listen to wise counsel. Here our elders can help us. How I wish I’d known in my youth what some painful lessons have taught me: that’s why I love to listen to those who’ve been on the road of life longer. Then Solomon encourages us to be patient. I could have saved myself all kinds of calamities if I’d learned that lesson earlier – and I still need to learn it sometimes.

There’s also a word to the overly nostalgic: Solomon warns us about living our lives in the past. ‘Don’t say, “Why were things better in the good old days?”‘ (Eccl. 7:10).

Reminiscing over the past can be a waste of energy and put a cloud over the good day that God has given us today. Let’s not simply live in the future either – some people spend their whole lives preparing to live.

In all of this, Solomon urges us to experience the ‘better than’ life. Let’s give thanks for the truth that Jesus offers us what really is the good and indeed the best life. We lose nothing of true value by following Him – He has the good, the best.

Let’s make ‘better than’ choices and live fully and wisely today.

Prayer: God of wisdom, help me to live in the present, and choose wisely what is best in Your eyes. Amen.

GET WISDOM

READ Ecclesiastes 7:11-29 James 3:13-18

FOCUS Wisdom is a good thing. It’s like getting a share of the family wealth.

Like a boy with a new toy, I was looking forward to playing with (I mean operating) our new pressure washer yesterday. It was time to rinse the film of winter dust off our deck, so I set about the task with the joyful abandon unique in men who are operating power tools. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the instructions (I never do). No major injury was sustained, but I learned pressure washing while barefoot is not a good idea.

I could have ended the day with a clean deck – and only nine toes.

As Solomon encourages all of us (‘all who see the sun’) to live according to God’s wisdom, he lets us know the principles God has established work – for everybody.

And he outlines some of the benefits of wise living: the wise are protected and preserved (because wisdom prevents us from doing all kinds of stupid things that would hurt us). Wisdom, says powerful King Solomon, makes the wise one more powerful than ten kings. He laments so few of us live wisely – one in a thousand.

Life comes with instructions. The Bible must be read carefully – our study in the book of Ecclesiastes has surely demonstrated you can’t take literally some words that are either metaphorical, or the musings of a somewhat lost man. We need to know how to approach the Bible. But we ignore it at our peril, because it is God’s Word to us.

We need to engage with it, wrestle with its challenges and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, apply it every day.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that Your way is best. Help me to live according to Your instructions. Amen.

WISDOM’S BALANCE

READ Ecclesiastes 7:16-18 Matthew 23:1-36

It was a terrible thought that caught me off guard. I was sitting on the London train, looking around at the bobbing heads of the other passengers, when the questions surfaced: do I really want all of these people to become Christians? My hesitation shocked me. And then I realised where the pause came from. I’d just spent some time with what Solomon would describe as an ‘over-zealous’ Christian. ‘Do not be over righteous, neither be overwise – why destroy yourself?’ (Eccl. 7:16, NIV).

This man had been loud and opinionated.

His attempts to be evangelistic meant he didn’t listen and treated the person he was talking to (or at) like a prospect in a high-pressure sales presentation. He was acerbic about other Christians who didn’t share his taste in music, choice of Bible translation, and brand of church. He wrote off anyone who was not as ‘passionate’ as he was as ‘lukewarm’. In short, he was righteous in the worst possible way.

No one could question his enthusiasm, but his was an off-balanced zeal and I wondered if it was more about his personality type then a love for Jesus. He also considered himself to be wiser than most of the fellow Christians in his local church. That’s a malady all spiritual people need to carefully avoid, as the Pharisees show us. Their passion and piety were ruined by their judgmental, arrogant attitudes, and ultimately they schemed to bring Jesus down. Let’s be keen, but let’s be kind, and balanced too.

A few years ago I spoke at a conference alongside another speaker who had a reputation for conflict. He had fallen out with an array of Christian leaders. I sensed he was unhappy with me when I preached one night. Unable to bear the tension of two days of frosty glares, at last I went to him and asked him if he was offended. He proceeded to verbally rip me to shreds; my humour, he said, was close to blasphemous and my story-telling irrelevant. He questioned my entire calling and ministry – then walked off.

I was deeply wounded by the episode and went to a trusted friend who knew us both well. His response was blunt but helpful.

‘You know his reputation. Why hand him a knife and invite him to stab you with it?’

A few days ago we talked about how vital it is that we be people who listen to the input of others, even when it hurts us to hear the truth. But in his unpacking of what wisdom looks like, Solomon wants us to know we shouldn’t rush to heed every word of criticism spoken to us. Some people live to criticise: treat their words with caution.

Sometimes, jealousy and other mixed motives might be the real reason for their criticism: spite is the source of their words.

Jesus experienced that frequently.

Let’s be those who listen up. But let’s not take every critical word to heart, or try to respond to it. It may come from a place of spite, or from someone who has themselves been deeply hurt. Neither makes their words the truth.

Prayer: Lord, give me grace when I am rightly criticised, and discernment about the criticisms I should heed. Amen.

He always assumed the same posture in church, every Sunday. His face reflected his personality: unsmiling, his eyes cold and his arms folded, there was an ugly intensity about him. His children sat ramrod upright, obviously warned of consequences if they didn’t assume a junior version of his stern expression. He was a serious Christian.

In what seems to be another chapter full of Solomon’s random musings, he remarks that true wisdom and depth of faith should soften us and perhaps lead more to a smile than a frown.

In 2008 an article appeared in The Times newspaper. Matthew Parris, a renowned journalist, wrote about his experiences in Africa. Surprisingly, it was titled, ‘Why Africa Needs God’ – surprising because Parris is an atheist. But his head was turned as he witnessed Christianity making a tangible difference in the lives of people he knew in his boyhood home of Malawi and across Africa. He commented about the appearance of the Christians, who, he said, ‘were different. Their faith appeared to have liberated and relaxed them. There was a liveliness, a curiosity, an engagement with the world... Whenever we entered a territory worked by missionaries, we had to acknowledge that something changed in the faces of the people we passed and spoke to: something in their eyes.’20 This does not mean we should wear happy grins all the time. But true wisdom and spiritual depth don’t require a grim look and an attitude of unhealthy intensity.

Prayer: Lord, help me to take myself seriously, but not too seriously. Amen.

WISDOM, WORDS AND TIMING

READ Ecclesiastes 8:2-7 Proverbs 27:14

FOCUS There’s a proper time and way for people to do everything.

Ecclesiastes 8:6

Our words have effect, both to bless and to bruise. As Solomon talks about the authoritative word of the ruler, we realise all of us can profoundly change a person’s life, with the words we use and the timing of when we use them. For example, in church life, I never offer constructive but negative feedback to someone straight after they have preached or led worship – they will be physically spent and emotionally weary. And wise people don’t just blurt out whatever is on their minds and justify their verbosity with ‘I just say it like it is.’

Then more generally, tough words used during a time of trial, exhaustion, disappointment or vulnerability can devastate. It’s like kicking a bruise. Perhaps that’s why the Bible commands us to be ‘slow to speak’, not only so we can think about our words, but check our timing too (James 1:19). Let’s pray God will give us wisdom to know what to say – and wisdom to know when to say it. People need to be ready to take our words on board. The counsel of Proverbs about early morning, neighbourly greetings is both amusing but also very practical!

Another application from my own catalogue of mistakes is to be careful about reacting to emails that frustrate, hurt or anger us. Kay always counsels me to wait 24 hours before making a response that is too hasty – one that will possibly make a tricky situation worse, be hurtful to others, and cause me to regret it later. Most of the time I take her advice...

Prayer: Lord, grant me wisdom to know what to say – and when to say it. Amen.

ABUSING AUTHORITY

READ Ecclesiastes 8:8-9 1 Peter 5:1-4

FOCUS There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

Bullies are everywhere. Some learn their tactics in the playground as children and sadly never grow up. Their methods usually change: they graduate from pinching and punching to shouting, hectoring, manipulation, spreading rumours, intimidation and humiliation.

It’s not always easy to spot a bully – some shout, while others charm and smile while whispering venomous words. Sadly, some of the worst abuses of power can occur in the Church – but Christian leaders can be more subtle in the way they abuse power. They can even use God or His name in their powerplaying. I’ve been sickened by Christian leaders who get others to toe the line with subtle forms of spiritual abuse. Insisting they have a hotline to God, they smear their critics by accusing them of being divisive, or surround themselves with fellow leaders who they can rely on to support them blindly, whatever they do or say. I know of some churches where the theology is orthodox, but the culture of the organisation is almost cultic.

As Solomon continues to mull over the fruits of wisdom, he uses a phrase that Peter later uses (‘lord it over’). He calls those in leadership positions to exercise their authority well and cites an interesting reason: bullies end up hurting themselves as well as others, ‘to his own hurt.’ They know others fear rather than respect them; they have to work hard to scheme and steer; and the bully has few true friends.

Let’s challenge all bullying.

Prayer: Lord, may those who lead Your people exercise authority, but never dominate. May they be truly Christ-like.

My faith has changed over the years.

Sometimes the journey has scared me, because I’ve had to venture out from certainty in some areas. I remain convinced about the core foundations of the Christian faith, but some of the details are a lot more blurred these days. And there are some things that I understand less and less, which can be bewildering. Some of the ‘answers’ or clichés that used to work for me just don’t work anymore. I pray, but understand less about the dynamics of prayer than I did; I remain firmly convinced that the gifts of the Spirit are available to us today, but am less willing to tag some phenomena as being ‘of God’ than the excited, enthusiastic (and sometimes gullible) me of yesteryear.

I’d like to avoid cynicism like the plague, but healthy scepticism has become part of my life. Every now and then I wish I could dash back to the comforting campsite of naive certainty, which was where I lived in my early days as a Christian. The terrain is more uncertain now and occasionally I find myself in emotional shadows. But most of the time, I’m at peace with not knowing.

Surely faith that has no sense of mystery is a shallow faith. We worship God and that simple statement alone must remind us that His wisdom is therefore infinite and ours is not. Solomon reminds us – yet again – that, search as hard as we may, we won’t figure everything out, however wise we might consider ourselves to be. And that’s okay.

Prayer: Lord, may I trust You for what I cannot grasp, and thank You for what I can. Amen.

WEEKEND 21/22 MAR

LIVE!

READ Ecclesiastes 9:1-10 Deuteronomy 14:22-26

People who live life in technicolor will always be criticised, because they stand out from the crowd. And that’s exactly what happened to Jesus, who came not only to die that we might live but to show us how to live too. The party-going, freely-forgiving, leper-touching, children-hugging Jesus ruffled so many feathers, not just because of His teaching, but because He grabbed life with both hands and lived with love, compassion, style and energy.

In this chapter Solomon starts to turn the corner towards hope (thank the Lord for that!), but he still refuses to make false promises. All die and all suffer. Human beings are bad, smitten as we are with the insanity of sin. But Solomon urges us not to drown in the realities of the human condition, but to live life out loud anyway. Live for the now, live in God’s dynamic purity (as some see the symbolism of white clothes), enjoy food and drink, in short... live! Joy comes from knowing beautiful moments are blessings from God. Repeatedly throughout Ecclesiastes, Solomon acknowledges God Himself is the source of everyday gifts that brighten our lives.

Sometimes I meet people who seem to be very holy – but not terribly alive. A few days ago I mentioned the hard-faced, stern demeanour some ‘holy’ people adopt.

They appear nervous of fun and suspicious of anything that might be frivolous. Life is very harsh at times. But there is a God and breath means hope, whatever the circumstances are. Live!

To ponder: What might it mean for you to live life a little more ‘out loud’?

TODAY!

READ Ecclesiastes 9:11-18 Matthew 6:25-34

FOCUS Fish are caught in nets. Birds are taken in traps. And people are trapped by hard times that come when they don’t expect them.

Yesterday we heard Solomon hollering at us from history: ‘Get on and live now!’ Here’s a question: what do we think we’d do if we were told we might only have a short time to live? Someone very close to me has just heard that prognosis. It has sobered my mind as well as galvanised my prayers. But it’s got me thinking.

A doctor friend, who is used to sitting people down to give them the terrible news that they don’t have long to live, tells me Hollywood is wrong in its portrayal of how people handle imminent death. Most of the time they don’t go on a world cruise (they don’t have the money, don’t feel like travelling because of their sickness, and feel more comforted by just staying at home). What they usually do is... more of the same. Life has to go on. They get up in the morning, work if they’re able to, and pay their bills.

None of us have any certainty about the future. When we’re young, we feel invincible.

But a few years of experience teach us life doesn’t come with a longevity guarantee.

Let’s not wait for a diagnosis that could bring time pressure, or delay joy beyond the horizon of retirement. Is there something you’d like to do or feel you should do? Don’t wait. Seize the day. Today is all we’re sure of, which is why Jesus instructs us to live in 24-hour chunks. Worrying is pointless: it doesn’t change tomorrow. Solomon’s advice is simple and liberating – tomorrow may never come, so live today.

Prayer: Lord, save me from indefinitely preparing to live. Amen.

A FLY IN THE OINTMENT

READ Ecclesiastes 10:1-15 2 Samuel 11:1-5

FOCUS Dead flies give perfume a bad smell. And a little foolishness can make a lot of wisdom useless.

As Solomon contrasts foolish behaviour with wisdom (in a chapter full of rambling statements), he wants us to know a lifetime of wise living can be spoiled by small acts of folly. Just as the decomposing flies will ruin the finest perfume, so what seem like incidental indiscretions can destroy our reputations – and, more importantly, taint the reputation of the God we serve.

Some years ago I interviewed Jonathan Aitken. I was struck by the fact that his glittering career (many say he was heading for Number 10) was wiped out, initially, because he lied about a hotel receipt – and then tried to sue a British newspaper to cover up his deceit. Jonathan is now a dedicated follower of Christ, but his future as a statesman was destroyed by a few ‘flies.’

Solomon also uses the imagery of left and right – in Old Testament thinking, the right hand was always the place of honour and blessing, which is why Joseph sought the ‘right handed blessing’ for his son Manasseh (Gen. 48:13) – and Jesus is portrayed as being seated at the right hand of the Father (1 Peter 3:22).

As he uses images of digging pits, breaking through walls, quarrying, log-splitting and wood-chopping, the message is simple: all actions have consequences, even the smallest. Let’s consider the long-term or even permanent cost of a rash and foolish decision – as King David discovered in his dalliance with Bathsheba. Let’s not allow those flies to ruin the ointment of our lives today.

Prayer: Father, may I choose well today, knowing all choices have consequences.

Amen.

A LITTLE BIRD TOLD ME

READ Ecclesiastes 10:16-20 2 Corinthians 12:20

FOCUS A bird might fly away and carry your words. It might report what you said.

We spoke about this earlier, but Solomon brings us back to this theme. One way to spot if we’re being foolish is to listen to what comes out of our mouths. The tongue shows where the heart is. I’m embarrassed to reflect on the all-too frequent occasions where I put my foot in my mouth (in fact I wish my foot had been there, because it might have kept me from speaking). Life has plenty of unexpected twists beyond our control – but wisdom will prevent us from creating yet more hassle because of unnecessary words.

This is also the origin of the saying, ‘a little bird told me.’ Using a delightful picture of a bird whispering secrets, Solomon reminds us carelessly spoken words may get passed on and then result in trouble. If we’re not being trustworthy because we’re gossiping, why should we expect those we pass illicit news onto will be any more trustworthy?

It’s a simple thought, but one I’ve found personally helpful when I’ve been tempted to blurt something unhelpful or indiscreet: my comment will take perhaps ten seconds to say and five minutes to discuss, but it might lead to hours or years of regret and pain, for me and others.

Churches are especially vulnerable to gossip. And sometimes we dress gossip up quite artfully. We call it ‘sharing’ rather than gossip and disguise a juicy morsel of scandal as a prayer request. Let’s watch our words.

There’s a little bird listening. And that bird might be filing a flight plan even as we speak.

Prayer: Lord, help me to think before I speak, that the fruit of my words might be good. Amen.

LIVING LARGE

FOCUS No matter how many years anyone might live, let them enjoy all of them.

Ecclesiastes 11:8

Strange to say, running off the edge of a cliff was an exhilarating experience. I did have an experienced instructor with me and we were both attached to a large parachute (looking up at that inflated parachute was such a beautiful and indeed relieving sight).

Having decided against bungee jumping, Kay and I took the plunge – literally – high above the beautiful town of Queensland, New Zealand. It was risky – but exhilarating.

You might not have the inclination to hurl yourself off a cliff, but know this: Solomon calls all of us to live our short lives with a sense of risk and adventure. Sometimes we fail to live colourfully, not because God prohibits us from doing so, but because of our small thinking and accumulated, fussy ‘rules’ of life. ‘I don’t do that’, we say unconsciously. So we don’t try food we’re unaccustomed to, we don’t go to unfamiliar places, we refuse to listen to new ideas and in short, we live safe lives. But Solomon calls us to prudent stewardship and also extravagant generosity. Let’s grab hold of opportunities and live with energy and commitment – don’t be a drifting cloud. And trust God with some wild faith as Abram did, when he responded to God’s call to a destination that was not identified at the time of that calling!

Let’s risk being hopeful. Let’s try something new, even if we fail. Come on. A parachute and a madly grinning instructor might not be our thing, but let’s live while we’re still alive.

Prayer: Father, You give extravagantly.

Help me to take risks in giving, to be bold in faith, and live life fully as I am able.

Amen.

I’m delighted to confess that I’ve done some very silly, frivolous things in my life – and I’m very proud to make the confession. Kay and I recently went for a four-mile walk in an absolute downpour. We got completely soaked and not only lived to tell the tale, but had such a lot of fun as we squished our way home through the mud.

One of our best family outings included going for a walk in the sea – with all our clothes on. Sometimes I’ve been thrilled not to be too sensible. Fun is such a vital part of life. And the young, says Solomon, are good at having fun. Thankfully, you don’t have to graduate from frivolity as you get older. And yet the hedonist king offers a caveat. He knows that ‘Just do it’ is a slogan that won’t work for life. He gently reminds us we will have to give an account for our lives. Fun is wonderful. And sin is always stupid and unsatisfying anyway. The laughs that go with sin are hollow and usually end in tears.

One of the benefits of being a Christian is that I can laugh so much without hurting others or debasing myself. One commentator says, ‘Ecclesiastes gives us a realistic view of life that is joyful about its happy pleasures while at the same time sober about its many sorrows. The book steadfastly refuses to show us anything less than the whole of life as it actually is.21 Have we ‘matured’ out of being able to have fun? Are we sensible and sad with it? Perhaps it’s not too late.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You invented fun and laughter. Save me from a furrowed-brow approach to life. Amen.

WEEKEND 28/29 MAR

SOLOMON’S JOURNEY

READ Ecclesiastes 12:1 Luke 15:11-20

It’s the statement we’ve been waiting 11 long chapters to hear: ‘Remember your Creator in the days of your youth’ (Eccl. 12:1, NIV). At last! Some advice that needs no qualification! If Ecclesiastes had been written by a Christian leader, this announcement would have been in the very first chapter, so that we wouldn’t misunderstand. But the Bible permits Solomon to go on a journey and takes us with him. The painful, winding road to his conclusions, including a few ridiculous false ideas along the way – they are all recorded.

Christianity is about journey, not arrival, and we are all still on the trek. Let’s remember that, when other Christians disappoint us – a very common experience – because we are all still in formation. Sometimes, maybe we do the same.

And perhaps there’s someone dear to you who, as far as you can see, is taking a wrong turn down a dead-end street right now.

When that happens, we can feel so hopeless and fearful. Pray for them, love them unconditionally and speak into their lives if you have permission and opportunity to do so: but realise you can’t chart their journey for them. Pray that, in the journey, they will meet kind, wise Christians who can impact them for good. Ask the Lord ultimately to bring them to good, truthful conclusions. It took a while for the prodigal son to ‘come to himself.’ May God give us patience while we wait for some sanity to arrive in the heart and mind of someone that we love.

To ponder: Is there someone who has drifted away from God, the situation looks hopeless, and you have stopped praying?

OLD AGE

READ Ecclesiastes 12:2-8 1 Timothy 5:1-2

FOCUS Remember your Creator before the almond trees have buds on them... Old men will not want to make love any more.

Ecclesiastes 12:5

It was an inspiring talk on the power of peace and the evils of war. The young preacher, who had never been to war, waxed eloquent, dismissing the Second World War as a terrible mistake. I looked into the eyes of an older member of the congregation, who had fought for years and lost many friends. His sacrifice was being trashed. Being older can be tough, especially when the young are talking.

I wish Solomon wasn’t such a harsh realist.

I was enjoying all that inspiring talk about loving God when you’re young and now he dumps a litany of woe about getting older on us. He reminds us of some of the challenges ahead: hardness of hearing, greater nervousness, physical immobility and impotence. What a wonderful outlook!

Solomon refuses to let up on the news: love God, but life is still tough. He doesn’t want us to be surprised by the challenges ahead if we survive into our senior years. Longevity is increasing all the time: a man born in 1900 only had a life expectancy of 47 – the average life expectancy in the UK and the USA now is around 79 years.

All of this must prompt us to renewed compassion and respect for our seniors.

While we obviously shouldn’t generalise, they are not out of the battle – they are just fighting challenges that others don’t face. Many struggle daily with pain and grief from losing friends, loved ones and family members. They feel afraid of what we don’t fear – and sometimes we fail to understand.

Prayer: Lord, I pray especially today for all of the more senior members of my church.

Strengthen and encourage them. Amen.

FINAL WORDS

READ Ecclesiastes 12:9-14 Matthew 22:34-40

FOCUS Everything has now been heard.

And here’s the final thing I want to say.

Have respect for God and obey his commandments.

Ecclesiastes 12:13

The experiment is over. The laboratory is shutting down and the journal has its final entry. Solomon had gone all out to turn over every rock in search of fulfilment.

He’s pointed us to the sad, inexplicable emptiness of much of life, using the word ‘meaningless’ (smoke) around thirty times and reiterating that truth in all but two chapters of his journal.

Life under the sun – with or without a divine perspective – is hard. But Solomon ends by bringing us back to two ‘musts.’ They are the non-negotiables of living. He calls us to revere God and obey Him. There’s no promise that in doing both, however, we’ll be spared from the tough times – the opposite is true. But we are confronted by the truth that life only really makes sense because God is. Without that, we are highly developed animals. Our morality is just a code to order things and our highest joys won’t satisfy.

But there is a God and He loves and cares for us. Walking with Him daily is what we were born for. And however tough life will be, it’s no pie in the sky platitude to say this is not all there is. Life will continue, for always, with us blessed to be up close and personal with the Lord. The clouds that sometimes block Him from view will be banished, forever.

Thanks, Solomon, for telling us the truth about life, at least as you saw it. May each one of us live fully today, live it out loud, and live it with God, knowing that a wonderful eternal tomorrow awaits.

Prayer: Lord, may I love You and serve You, all of my days, knowing I will be with You forever. Amen.
