INTRODUCTION The last thing that we associate God with is disobedience.

God is meant to be the place that we go for refuge, consistency and peace. But life is not consistent. Life is messy. Many Christians claim to be reaching for God, but really they are just trying to fill the void with whatever is the most convenient. When the people of Israel grew tired of waiting for Moses to come off the mountain, they reached for their gold. What things are we reaching for in our life? Are we reaching for porn when we long for intimacy? Reaching for success when we long for security? We would never say that we have replaced God, but our actions tell a different story.

Whether we are trying to replace God, trying to run away or trying to perform for Him, we have no mindset to deal with a disobedient God. We live in a time of passive Christianity. There are many people who live out their faith every day but there are many more who are just comfortable. They don’t want God outside the box that they have put him in and if all of their prayers were answered it wouldn’t make a difference in anyone else’s life. Disobedient God is a book for people that don’t realize they need it. It is a book for people who no longer have God as the focus of their life.

Throughout Disobedient God, Albert Tate delivers a fresh perspective, not only on familiar Biblical stories, but also on life experiences that are common to everyone. When the people of Israel made their golden calf, Moses was on the mountain getting the 10 commandments from God. The first one preaches against idolatry. This is a book that shows that in order to break any of the other nine commandments, we must break the first one and in order to keep any of the other nine commandments we must keep the first one. It is not a book about golden calves in the front lawn but instead it is a book about the calves, the images and the idols that show up in our hearts. And how to rid ourselves from them all and focus our desires on a relationship with God.

OU T LI NE OF E ACH SESSION A typical group session for the Disobedient God study will include the following sections. Read through this to get a clear idea of how each group meeting will be structured: WEEKLY MEMORY VERSES. Each session opens with a Memory Verse that emphasizes an important truth from the session. This is an optional exercise, but we believe that memorizing scripture can be a vital part of filling our minds with God’s will for our lives. We encourage you to give this important habit a try. The verses for our five sessions are also listed in the appendix.

INTRODUCTION. Each lesson opens with a brief thought that will help you prepare for the session and get you thinking about the particular subject you will explore with your group.

Make it a practice to read these before the session. You may want to have the group read them aloud.

SHARE YOUR STORY. The foundation for spiritual growth is an intimate connection with God and His family. You build that connection by sharing your story with a few people who really know you and who earn your trust.

This section includes a simple question to get you talking—letting you share as much or as little of your story as you feel comfortable doing.

HEAR GOD’S STORY. In this section, you’ll read the Bible and listen to teaching, in order to hear God’s story—and begin to see how His story aligns with yours. When the study directs you to, you’ll pop in the DVD and watch a short teaching segment. You’ll then have an opportunity to read a passage of scripture, and discuss both the 10

teaching and the text. You won’t focus on accumulating information but on how you should live in light of the Word of God. We want to help you apply the insights from scripture practically and creatively, from your heart as well as your head. At the end of the day, allowing the timeless truths from God’s Word to transform our lives in Christ should be your greatest aim.

STUDY NOTES. This brief section provides additional commentary, background or insights on the passage you’ll study in the Hear God’s Story section.

CREATE A NEW STORY. God wants you to be a part of His Kingdom—to weave your story into His. That will mean change. It will require you to go His way rather than your own.

This won’t happen overnight, but it should happen steadily. By making small, simple choices, we can begin to change our direction. This is where the Bible’s instructions to “be doers of the Word, not just hearers” (James 1:22) comes into play.

Many people skip over this aspect of the Christian life because it’s scary, relationally awkward, or simply too much work for their busy schedules. But Jesus wanted all of His disciples to know Him personally, carry out His commands, and help outsiders connect with Him. This doesn’t necessarily mean preaching on street corners. It could mean welcoming newcomers, hosting a short-term group in your home, or walking through this study with a friend. In this study, you’ll have an opportunity to go beyond Bible study to biblical living. This section will also have a question or two that will challenge you to live out your faith by serving others, sharing your faith, and worshiping God.

FOR ADDITIONAL STUDY. If you have time and want to dig deeper into more Bible passages about the topic at hand, we’ve provided additional passages and questions, which you can use either during the meeting, or as homework. Your group may choose to read and prepare before each meeting in order to cover more biblical material. Or, group members can use the additional study section during the week after the meeting. If you prefer not to do study homework, this section will provide you with plenty to discuss within the group.

These options allow individuals or the whole group to expand their study while still accommodating those who can’t do homework or are new to your group.

DAILY DEVOTIONS. Each week on the Daily Devotions pages, we provide scriptures to read and reflect on between sessions. This provides you with a chance to slow down, read just a small portion of scripture each day, and reflect and pray through it. You’ll then have a chance to journal your response to what you’ve read. Use this section to seek God on your own throughout the week. This time at home should begin and end with prayer. Don’t get in a hurry; take enough time to hear God’s direction.

W H AT A R E YOU R E ACH I NG FOR?

You’ve gotta love a good Christian cliché. So often when people are dealing with hard things, well-meaning believers will say, “You can either let this make you bitter or make you better.” Like all clichés, this one is rooted in a truth—we can allow difficulties to poison our hearts and our approach to life, or we can choose to grow and learn from our hardships.

However, these churchy sayings also make things seem really easy, and if it’s difficult to overcome bitterness when the people in our lives disappoint us, it’s even harder when we think God has let us down. In this study, we’re going to be looking at why God so often goes “off-script” and behaves differently than we think He should—and how we should respond in relationship with Him.

Before you start this first meeting, get contact information for every participant. Take time to pass around a copy of the LifeGroup Roster on page 155, a sheet of paper, or one of you pass your Study Guide, opened to the LifeGroup Roster. Ask someone to make copies or type up a list with everyone’s information and email it to the group during the week.

Then open your group with prayer. This should be a brief, simple prayer in which you invite God to be with you as you meet.

Take the opportunity at the end of the group time to take prayer requests and pray more specifically regarding the sharing of the group. As always, stay aware of times when someone may just need to be surrounded by prayer in the moment.

We created a “Question of the Day” similar to our weekend services. Please take a moment to talk with someone you have not connected with yet. Answer the following question. Keep in mind that unlike our weekend we will give you a few more minutes and the question may be a little harder to answer. Here we go…

THINK ABOUT IT What expectations do you have for how God will treat you or what He will do? Where do those expectations come from?

Whether your group is new or ongoing, it’s always important to reflect on and review your values together. On page 144 is a LifeGroup Agreement with the values we’ve found most useful in sustaining healthy, balanced groups. We recommend that you choose one or two values—ones you haven’t previously focused on or have room to grow in—to emphasize during this study. Choose ones that will take your group to the next stage of intimacy and spiritual health.

If your group is new, welcome newcomers. Introduce everyone—you may even want to have name tags for your first meeting.

The LifeGroup Calendar on page 145 is a tool for planning who will host and lead each meeting. Take a few minutes to plan hosts and leaders for your remaining meetings. Don’t skip this important step! It will revolutionize your group.

What does the response of the people tell us about their spiritual maturity?

When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”

Why was Aaron, Moses’ brother and a leader, so quick to give into their desire for an idol?

Aaron answered them, “Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, “These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”

When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, “Tomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.” 6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.

Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

How could the people believe that an item made by Aaron was the same God who brought them out of Egypt? Can our feelings and our judgments be trusted when we’re disappointed with God?

What’s going on in verse 5? How can they worship both a golden calf and the Lord?

ST U DY NOTES Moses was on the mountain for forty days—about six weeks.

Despite having been dramatically rescued from slavery in Egypt and led by God himself to this moment, it only took six weeks of separation for the Israelites to question both Moses and God. However, they didn’t know what was going on during those weeks. During Moses’ time on the mountain with God, he received instructions for how the people were to worship, what the tabernacle should look like, and how the people should live as the chosen people of God. This is pretty big stuff, and certainly worth waiting a few weeks for! But because the people didn’t know what they didn’t know, they jumped to conclusions, assumed Moses and God had abandoned them, and decided to worship other gods.

THINK ABOUT IT We usually won’t get to see what’s happening “behind the scenes” with God. Even when He has heard our prayer and is answering it, even when He’s working on our behalf at this very moment, it can seem as if He is not listening and not caring—and so we, too, assume the worst and stop our worship. What can we learn from this story? Are you willing to wait and see how God might be working?

CR E AT E A N EW S TORY In this section, talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve learned from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned.

THINK ABOUT IT Are you praying and waiting on God for something? Is there an area of life where you feel like God isn’t following your agenda?

What emotional reactions do you have to God in this situation?

What’s the difference between accepting a disappointment and sweeping it under the rug?

Choose someone who might be open to “doing life” with you at a deeper level and pray about that opportunity.

This week how will you interact with the Bible? Can you commit to spending time in daily prayer or study of God’s Word (use the Daily Devotions section to guide you)? Tell the group how you plan to follow Jesus this week, and then, at your next meeting, talk about your progress and challenges.

Stack your hands just like a sports team does in the huddle and commit to taking a risk and going deeper in your group and in your relationships with each other.

Ask, “How can we pray for you this week?” Invite everyone to share, but don’t force the issue. Be sure to write prayer requests on your Prayer and Praise Report on page 154.

Close your meeting with prayer.

Why isn’t it our default to talk in healthy ways about our emotions when we feel hurt by God? Would you be open to talking to God about these feelings?

Take a look at the Circles of Life diagram below and write the names of two or three people you know who need to know Christ.

Commit to praying for God’s guidance and an opportunity to share with each of them.

Perhaps they would be open to joining the group? Share your lists with the group so you can all be praying for the people you’ve identified.

Also consider someone—in this group or outside it—that you can begin going deeper with in an intentional way. This might be your mom or dad, a cousin, an aunt or uncle, a roommate, a college buddy, or a neighbor.

If you feel God nudging you to go deeper, take some time before the next meeting to dig into His Word. Explore the Bible passages related to this session’s theme on your own and jot your reflections in a journal or in this study guide. A great way to gain insight on a passage is to read it in several different translations. You may want to use a Bible app or website to compare translations.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Reflect: It’s okay to feel discouraged or even angry and upset with God. But those emotions will drain you if you don’t deal with them. Consider this week’s challenge to “do business with God” and renew your strength by connecting with Him.

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Reflect: It may not feel like it, but this verse says God actually blesses those who wait on Him and stay in relationship with Him. Ask God to help you seek Him and put your hope in Him.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Reflect: This can be hard to read when we’re feeling abandoned, forgotten, or confused by God. Do you believe you will still see God’s goodness in your life? If not, what needs to change?

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Use the following space to write any thoughts God has put in your heart and mind about the things we have looked at in this session and during your Daily Devotions time this week.

Reflect: The Israelites couldn’t wait six weeks for Moses to return. We’ve been waiting our whole lives for Jesus to return. Yet the farmer knows the seasons will change, and we can “stand firm” because the Lord’s return and His blessing are just as certain.

Reflect: Perhaps God’s timing may involve something beyond you—for instance, perhaps He is waiting for someone else to believe in Him. Ask God to help you change your perspective on His timing, and wait patiently just as He is patient with us.

2 R EPL ACI NG HIM

Some of the best days at school were substitute days. When the teacher was absent and a substitute teacher covered the class, it was almost guaranteed that the test or quiz would be cancelled, the homework assignment would be forgotten, and the class activities would be minimal. We loved substitute days because they were almost always less demanding than regular days.

We’re still looking for substitutes to make our lives easier. We want to pop a diet pill instead of eating our veggies and going for a walk.

We want to watch families on TV instead of turning it off and talking to our own families. We drink to relax or to go to sleep…..we flirt with a coworker instead of resolving problems in our marriage…. and we do anything we can think of to avoid our regrets and numb our pain instead of calling them out and taking them to God. God wants to give us real joy and real peace—but we can only find them when we turn from our familiar patterns and trust His faithfulness instead. When it comes to the real longings of life, there’s no substitute for walking with God.

How is it outside of God’s character to tempt us?

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

What is the progression from a desire to a sinful choice? (verse 15)

ST U DY NOTES In Exodus 12, we read about the Israelites beginning their journey out of Egypt: During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. 32 Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.”

The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country.

“For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” 34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing.35 The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36 The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.

THINK ABOUT IT The people were not only allowed to leave and follow God to the Promised Land, but He provided for them in an amazing way—their Egyptian captors actually gave them piles of silver and gold before they left! God intended for them to use these gifts to build a tabernacle where they could worship Him, and while He talked to Moses on the mountain He gave Moses detailed instructions for how to build this tabernacle. However, in one of the great biblical ironies, at that very same moment Moses is receiving these instructions, the people were using some of the gold to create a calf to worship.

Talk about reaching for a sorry substitute instead of a great God!

In this section, talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve learned from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned.

THINK ABOUT IT What are you longing for? What are you reaching for instead?

Why are we so quick to forget God’s faithfulness in the past?

If Pastor Albert is right, and Satan hates when we identify our familiar substitute for God, then let’s make Satan mad! What is your familiar go-to?

What voices are you inviting into your head instead of God’s? How do you try to “replace” God?

Prayer. Commit to personal prayer and daily connection with God. You may find it helpful to write your prayers in a journal.

Daily Devotions. The Daily Devotions provided in each session offer an opportunity to read a short Bible passage five days a week during the course of our study. In our hurry-up world, we often move too quickly through everything—even reading God’s Word! Slow down. Don’t just skim, but take time to read carefully and reflect on the passage. Write down your insights on what you read each day. Copy a portion of scripture on a card and tape it somewhere in your line of sight, such as your car’s dashboard or the bathroom mirror. Or text it to yourself! Think about it when you sit at red lights or while you’re eating a meal. Reflect on what God is saying to you through these words. On the sixth day summarize what God has shown you throughout the week.

Ask, “How can we pray for you this week?”

Invite everyone to share, but don’t force the issue. Be sure to write prayer requests on your Prayer and Praise Report on page 154.

Close your meeting with prayer.

Here are some simple ways to connect with God. Tell the group which ones you plan to try this week, and talk about your progress and challenges when you meet next time.

This is the most well-known Psalm, and you’ve probably heard it before. But let’s look at it through the lens of this week’s teaching on trying to replace God’s faithfulness with what’s familiar. If verse 1 is true, how does that need to change our thinking?

How does God sometimes “prune” us? Do you look for ways to replace God so that you don’t have to undergo this pruning?

What does it mean to “abide” in Him? What are the benefits of abiding?

What does it mean that God leads us to a place of peace (verse 2-3)? What do you look to for peace instead?

Reflect: Just as we studied in James this week, it is impossible for God to be anything outside of His own character. Praise God that he is faithful even when we are not!

Reflect: We are not on our own when we face our familiar sins or when we are tempted to numb ourselves.

We’re not alone when we’re tempted to replace God! Even in these moments, He is with us.

Reflect: We can trust that the Creator of heaven and earth will be faithful to meet all of our needs and satisfy all of our longings. Ask Him for the faith to claim this promise today, and for it to change your relationship with Him.

RU NNING FROM HIM

The scene opens to the sound of glass breaking and frantic footsteps of children fleeing the scene of a broken window in their neighborhood. We have probably all seen that plot in a television show or movie. Someone throws a ball just a little too far and “game over.” No one wants to be caught by the owner. No one wants his or her parents to pay the bill. And no one even bothers to retrieve the ball.

We’re all like those children at times—quick to run when we don’t want to get in trouble for our mistakes, when we don’t get our way, or when we don’t like what’s happening. The problem is, just like the kids lost their ball, we miss so very much when we run from our mistakes before clean up our mistakes. The potential exists to lose even more when we run from an opportunity God is calling us to.

In those cases we leave more on the table then a scuffed baseball; we leave fulfillment, meaning, and joy. In this week’s lesson, we’ll look at why we run—and what God wants us to do instead.

THINK ABOUT IT What was Jonah’s assignment? Has God ever asked you to do something that felt really hard, unpleasant, or even scary?

But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

When Jonah decided to run from his call he found a mode of transportation without much effort. At times we allow favorable circumstances to rationalize poor behavior. What are some things in our world today that make disobedience easy?

The city of Tarshish was about as far west as you could get from Ninevah. What does this tell us about Jonah’s determination to disobey God’s call?

ST U DY NOTES Moses was another man that got a very specific order from God. When God first called Moses, He told Moses amazing things. God said He had seen the suffering of the Israelites. God informed Moses He was the chosen one to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

Finally, God promised to give Moses the ability to do amazing miracles.

However, Moses spent most of that first encounter trying to convince God that he really wasn’t qualified for the task God had called him to. In fact, Moses’ main response was to argue with God. His excuses included his unworthiness (Exodus 3:11), the people might not believe him (4:1), he wasn’t good at speaking in front of people (4:10), and, finally, that he simply wanted God to send someone else (4:13). We might find it amazing that Moses would argue with God this way, and yet don’t we do the same thing?

Instead of trusting in God’s plan or even being excited about the adventure He’s calling us to, we focus on all the reasons we don’t want to go.

THINK ABOUT IT Moses eventually (and reluctantly) went to Egypt, confronted Pharaoh, led the people out of Egypt, and led them through the desert to the Promised Land. Instead of running, he raised up a nation. What might God want to do through you?

Some versions translate verse 10 as “your strength will support me” or “your right hand shall hold me.” How does this verse comfort you as you consider following God instead of running from Him?

What finally made Moses run?

According to this Psalm, God is everywhere, all the time, seeing everything. How does that influence your instinct to run to a place that does not exist when things get difficult?

Reflect: This verse is talking about Moses and his eventual decision to accept his call from God. Sometimes staying instead of running will involve sacrifice instead of “fleeting pleasures”—but it’s always worth it.

Reflect: Even when we’re trying to follow God, it’s easy to get distracted.

What part of your heart is struggling right now to seek Him? Ask for His help in staying focused on His call.

PER FOR MING FOR HIM A few years ago, a friend of mine was talking to one of her pastors.

She was complaining that God didn’t seem to be keeping his promises.

“I attend church, I volunteer in several ways, and I read my Bible,” she said. “I even tithe! God says that when we obey Him, He will bless us, and that He will give us the desires of our heart when we do the right things. But I’m still single and I still haven’t had much professional success. I don’t get it!”

“Oh, so because you do all those things, God owes you, right?” her pastor said. “You’re trying to control God’s behavior with your behavior.”

Ouch. If we’re honest, all of us have done this. All of us have done the right things or said the right words because then the disobedient God will become obedient—and we’ll get what we want, the way we want to have it.

The Bible does promise God’s blessings on His people, but it never promises that we get to determine what that looks like, when the blessings will arrive, or how it will happen. This week we’ll look at how to really please God, and why His amazing grace means we never have to perform.

ST U DY NOTES Pastor Brandan in the studio audience mentioned the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, which is a wonderful example of God’s “scandalous grace.”

Here’s the story, from Matthew 20: “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. He agreed to pay them a denarius for the day and sent them into his vineyard.

“About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. He told them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went.

“He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around.

He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?’

receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. ‘These who were hired last worked only one hour,’ they said, ‘and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.’

“But he answered one of them, ‘I am not being unfair to you, friend. Didn’t you agree to work for a denarius? Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’

“So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

THINK ABOUT IT As Pastor Albert said, this story tends to irritate the conscientious folks who work the entire day but get paid the same as those who only worked an hour or two. Can you relate? What insights does this story give you into God’s grace?

“‘Because no one has hired us,’ they answered.

“He said to them, ‘You also go and work in my vineyard.’

“When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.’

“The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to 69

THINK ABOUT IT How do you perform for God? What’s your motive?

Spend some time praying about those you know who might respond to a simple invitation: to come to a church service, to join your LifeGroup, or even to just have coffee and talk about spiritual matters. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind people you can pray for.

Why is worshipping God a better choice than performing for Him?

Why is it hard to understand grace? Why does it make us uncomfortable?

Why does “punishment” sometimes make us feel better than grace?

Groups grow closer when they serve together. How could your group serve someone in need? Take some time with your group right now and go to the Fellowship website and choose an outreach serve project that you can do together. In addition to serving in the community also look for a way to SERVE during a weekend service in the parking, greeting, or hospitality teams.

W HEN BL ACK F R I DAY M EE T S G OOD F R I DAY John 10:10 is a famous verse. Jesus is telling his disciples that he is a shepherd and we are the sheep, and then he contrasts the two voices we can listen to. The “thief” – the devil – is bent on destruction, but Jesus’ goal is to bring us life. Some versions translate this as abundant life, or a rich and satisfying life, or real and eternal life. No matter which version you choose, the point is clear: Satan is out to hurt us, but Jesus is out for our good.

However, all too often we don’t believe this. Instead, like Adam and Eve in the garden, we are sucked into Satan’s lies and we start believing that God is depriving us or withholding His best. In this session, we’ll take a closer look at this scarcity mentality, and how Jesus and his sacrifice for us are more than enough for our lives.

ST U DY NOTES If you’re a fan of jazz music, you understand improvisation—when a musician takes the basic chords and rhythm of a song and then creates an original melody in the moment. Interestingly, we get this musical term from the Latin words “im provisus,” which means “not provided” or “unforeseen.” The musician improvises because the notes aren’t provided, and he creates something original and unpredictable.

The same is true in life. God always gives us everything we need— and then calls us to trust him for the rest when we don’t seem to have all the “notes.” He may not answer every question in the moment, but His sacrificial love for us is more than enough.

6 REST IN HIM

If you’re a parent, you’ve probably caught your child after he leaps into the air. A pastor friend of mine has a three-year-old who likes to launch herself into his arms off their front porch, off the side of a pool, even—in one episode that almost gave him a heart attack— from the top of the stairs to where he waited at the bottom. She is fearless and fiercely joyful in her determination to jump, because she trusts her daddy and knows he will catch her. (Although that staircase moment was a close call.)

God wants the same for us. We get so anxious about our lives and about the situations we face, but He wants us to rest in Him and let Him take care of it.

However, it’s a paradox: resting in God and letting Him call the shots starts with the decision to leap into radical trust. Before we can rest in His arms, we have to jump. Do you trust your Father?

ST U DY NOTES Talk about “shut your eyes”!

The Sea of Galilee, where this week’s Bible passage takes place, is well-known for sudden and very strong storms. The disciples would have known this, and several of them were fishermen who knew how to handle themselves in rough water. Yet this storm has them panicking, begging Jesus to help them—or at least to start bailing water.

Yes Jesus isn’t just unworried about the storm, he’s actually sleeping through it! And when he wakes up, He’s got it under control—with just a few words, he quiets the wind and waves that He created before the beginning of time and rescues them.

You will hopefully never face a violent storm on a small boat, but you’re probably facing some waves and wind in some aspect of life.

If you’re willing to trust Him, He can calm the storms in your lives and in your heart.

7 CONFESS TO HIM

In 2005, a man named Frank Warren started an experiment, inviting people to anonymously send him postcards sharing their secrets. Every Sunday he posts new secrets, which range from the small (“I use paper plates so I don’t have to do dishes”) to the huge (“Everyone who knew me before 9/11 believes I’m dead”).

Today Postsecret.com is one of the most popular websites in the world. Since the site launched, Warren has published collections of the postcards, spoken around the world, and changed the conversation about what it means to confess. He’s discovered that most people want to tell someone about their hopes, dreams, disappointments, and even their darkest moments. We all need to tell the truth, even about the tough stuff.

Of course, God has always known this; He created us and He knows our hearts. Whatever we are struggling with, whatever sin or sadness we face, God invites our honesty and encourages our transparency. This week we’ll look closer at the example of one man who admitted his doubts, and we’ll take a risk to share the truth about our own journeys. You won’t need a postcard—just bring an honest heart.

ST U DY NOTES If you grew up in the Catholic church, you may have gone to Confession, privately sharing your sins with a priest before you could attend Mass. If not, it’s likely you don’t have a lot of experience telling other people about where you’re struggling and how you’re sinning. However, the biblical idea of confession simply means to agree with God about your own sin. The Greek word, homologeō, means to say the same thing as another or to admit the truth. Confession is not just “getting something off your chest;” it’s acknowledging that we have made mistakes, agreeing with God that we need His forgiveness, and accepting that God has dealt with our sin on the cross.

You don’t need a special wooden booth or a priest to confess your sins; you simply need a willingness to speak and hear the truth.

Here are a few more things the Bible has to say about confessing our sins. Read these passages and consider the truths they’re teaching. How can you make confession a part of your life going forward?

THINK ABOUT IT If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

You will probably have seven or more jobs during your lifetime. You may have more than one job right now. You might have more than one house right now. Yet the Bible tells us there is only one thing that can truly satisfy our deepest longings—a relationship with God. Let these verses encourage you this week: But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:10) For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

(Isaiah 41:13) God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

What do we do on the first night of our group?

Like all fun things in life—have a party! A “get to know you” coffee, dinner, or dessert is a great way to launch a new study. You may want to review the Group Agreement (page 144) and share the names of a few friends you can invite to join you. But most importantly, have fun before your study time begins.

Where do we find new members for our group?

This can be troubling, especially for new groups that have only a few people or for existing groups that lose a few people along the way. If you are an open group that can take more members, we encourage you to pray with your group and then brainstorm a list of people from work, church, your neighborhood, your children’s school, family, the gym, and so forth. Then have each group member invite several of the people on his or her list.

No matter how you find members, it’s vital that you stay on the lookout for new people to join your group. All groups tend to go through healthy attrition—the result of moves, releasing new leaders, ministry opportunities, and so forth—and if the group gets too small, it could be at risk of shutting down. If you and your group stay open, you’ll be amazed at the people God sends your way. The next person just might become a friend for life. You never know!

How long will this group meet?

Most groups meet weekly for at least their first eight weeks, but every other week can work as well. We strongly recommend that the group meet for the first six months on a weekly basis if at all possible. This allows for continuity, and if people miss 142

a meeting they aren’t gone for a whole month.

At the end of this study, each group member may decide if he or she wants to continue on for another study. Some groups launch relationships for years to come, and others are stepping-stones into another group experience. Either way, enjoy the journey.

Can we do this study on our own?

Absolutely! This may sound crazy, but one of the best ways to do this study is not with a full house but with a few friends. You may choose to gather with another couple who would enjoy some relational time (perhaps going to the movies or having a quiet dinner) and then walking through this study.

to meet in the living room or dining room and to share the cost of a babysitter (or two) who can watch the kids in a different part of the house. This way, parents don’t have to be away from their children all evening when their children are too young to be left at home. A second option is to use one home for the kids and a second home (close by or a phone call away) for the adults. A third idea is to rotate the responsibility of providing a lesson or care for the children either in the same home or in another home nearby. This can be an incredible blessing for kids. Finally, the most common solution is to decide that you need to have a night to invest in your spiritual lives individually or as a couple and to make your own arrangements for childcare. No matter what decision the group makes, the best approach is to dialogue openly about both the problem and the solution.

Who is the leader?

Most groups have an official leader. But ideally, the group will mature and members will rotate the leadership of meetings. We have discovered that healthy groups rotate hosts/leaders and homes on a regular basis. This model ensures that all members grow, give their unique contribution, and develop their gifts. This study guide and the Holy Spirit can keep things on track even when you rotate leaders. Christ has promised to be in your midst as you gather.

Ultimately, God is your leader each step of the way.

How do we handle the childcare needs in our group?

Very carefully. Seriously, this can be a sensitive issue. We suggest that you empower the group to openly brainstorm solutions. You may try one option that works for a while and then adjust over time. Our favorite approach is for adults 143

HOSTING AN OPEN HOUSE If you’re starting a new group, try planning an “open house” before your first formal group meeting. Even if you have only two to four core members, it’s a great way to break the ice and to consider prayerfully who else might be open to joining you over the next few weeks. You can also use this kick-off meeting to hand out study guides, spend some time getting to know each other, discuss each person’s expectations for the group and briefly pray for each other. A simple meal or good desserts always make a kick-off meeting more fun.

After people introduce themselves and share how they ended up being at the meeting (you can play a game to see who has the wildest story!), have everyone respond to a few icebreaker questions: - - -

What was your favorite childhood game and why?

What is one thing you love about your church/our community?

What are three things about your life growing up that most people here don’t know?

Next, ask everyone to tell what he or she hopes to get out of the study. You might want to review the LifeGroup Agreement and talk about each person’s expectations and priorities.

You can skip this kick-off meeting if your time is limited, but you’ll experience a huge benefit if you take the time to connect with each other in this way.

LEA DING FOR THE FIRST TIME Sweaty palms are a healthy sign. The Bible says God is gracious to the humble. Remember who is in control; the time to worry is when you’re not worried. Those who are soft in heart (and sweaty palmed) are those whom God is sure to speak through.

Ask for feedback so you can grow. Perhaps in an email or on cards handed out at the study, have everyone write down three things you did well and one thing you could improve on. Don’t get defensive.

Instead, show an openness to learn and grow.

Seek support. Ask your leader, co-leader, or close friend to pray for you and prepare with you before the session. Walking through the study will help you anticipate potentially difficult questions and discussion topics.

Prayerfully consider launching a new group. This doesn’t need to happen overnight, but God’s heart is for this to take place over time. Not all Christians are called to be leaders or teachers, but we are all called to be “shepherds” of a few someday.

Bring your uniqueness to the study. Lean into who you are and how God wants you to uniquely lead the study.

Share with your group what God is doing in your heart. God is searching for those whose hearts are fully his. Share your trials and victories. We promise that people will relate.

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. Go through the session several times. If you are using the DVD, listen to the teaching segment and Leadership Lifter. Consider writing in a journal or fasting for a day to prepare yourself for what God wants to do. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare.

Prayerfully consider whom you would like to pass the baton to next week. It’s only fair. God is ready for the next member of your group to go on the faith journey you just traveled. Make it fun, and expect God to do the rest.

L E A DER SH I P 101 Congratulations!

You have responded to the call to help shepherd Jesus’ flock. There are few other tasks in the family of God that surpass the contribution you will be making.

As you prepare to lead, whether it is one session or the entire series, here are a few thoughts to keep in mind.

We encourage you to read these and review them with each new discussion leader before he or she leads.

1. Remember that you are not alone.

God knows everything about you, and He knew that you would be asked to lead your group. Remember that it is common for all good leaders to feel that they are not ready to lead. Moses, Solomon, Jeremiah and Timothy were all reluctant to lead. God promises, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5). Whether you are leading for one evening, for several weeks, or for a lifetime, you will be blessed as you serve.

2. Don’t try to do it alone.

Pray right now for God to help you build a healthy leadership team. If you can enlist a co-leader to help you lead the group, you will find your experience to be much richer. This is your chance to involve as many people as you can in building a healthy group. All you have to do is call and ask people to help. You’ll probably be surprised at the response.

3. Just be yourself.

If you won’t be you, who will? God wants you to use your unique gifts and temperament. Don’t try to do things exactly like another leader; do them in a way that fits you! Just admit it when you don’t have an answer, and apologize when you make a mistake. Your group will love you for it, and you’ll sleep better at night!

4. Prepare for your meeting ahead of time.

Review the session and the leader’s notes, and write down your responses to each question. Pay special attention to exercises that ask group members to do something other than engage in discussion. These exercises will help your group live what the Bible teaches, not just talk about it. Be sure you understand how an exercise works, and bring any necessary 152

supplies (such as paper and pens) to your meeting. If the exercise employs one of the items in the appendix, be sure to look over that item so you’ll know how it works. Finally, review “Outline for Each Session” so you’ll remember the purpose of each section in the study.

5. Pray for your group members by name.

Before you begin your session, go around the room in your mind and pray for each member by name. You may want to review the prayer list at least once a week.

Ask God to use your time together to touch the heart of every person uniquely. Expect God to lead you to whomever He wants you to encourage or challenge in a special way. If you listen, God will surely lead!

6. When you ask a question, be patient.

Someone will eventually respond. Sometimes people need a moment or two of silence to think about the question. Keep in mind, if silence doesn’t bother you, it won’t bother anyone else. After someone responds, affirm the response with a simple “thanks” or “good job.” Then ask, “How about somebody else?” or “Would someone who hasn’t shared like to add anything?” Be sensitive to new people or reluctant members who aren’t ready to say, pray or do anything.

If you give them a safe setting, they will blossom over time.

7. Provide transitions between questions.

When guiding the discussion, always read aloud the transitional paragraphs and the questions. Ask the group if anyone would like to read the paragraph or Bible passage. Don’t call on anyone, but ask for a volunteer, and then be patient until someone begins.

Be sure to thank the person who reads aloud.

8. Break up into smaller groups each week or they won’t stay.

If your group has more than seven people, we strongly encourage you to have the group gather sometimes in discussion circles of three or four people during the Hear God’s Story or Change Your Story sections of the study. With a greater opportunity to talk in a small circle, people will connect more with the study,

apply more quickly what they’re learning and ultimately get more out of it. A small circle also encourages a quiet person to participate and tends to minimize the effects of a more vocal or dominant member. It can also help people feel more loved in your group. When you gather again at the end of the section, you can have one person summarize the highlights from each circle. Small circles are also helpful during prayer time.

People who are unaccustomed to praying aloud will feel more comfortable trying it with just two or three others. Also, prayer requests won’t take as much time, so circles will have more time to actually pray. When you gather back with the whole group, you can have one person from each circle briefly update everyone on the prayer requests. People are more willing to pray in small circles if they know that the whole group will hear all the prayer requests.

9. Rotate facilitators weekly.

At the end of each meeting, ask the group who should lead the following week. Let the group help select your weekly facilitator. You may be perfectly capable of leading each time, but you will help others grow in their faith and gifts if you give them opportunities to lead.

You can use the LifeGroup Calendar to fill in the names of all meeting leaders at once if you prefer.

10. One final challenge (for new or first time leaders): Before your first opportunity to lead, look up each of the five passages listed below. Read each one as a devotional exercise to help yourself develop a shepherd’s heart. Trust us on this one. If you do this, you will be more than ready for your first meeting.
