From the Editor Like many of us the Fall is a favorite time of the year. Not because winter is on its way, rather, because the weather, is the perfect time of the year to be outside. To that end we have an article with some suggested routes that you can take in the greater Lehigh Valley and beyond. to enjoy the last of the fall foliage. So get in your cars and get out to some of these routes and enjoy our Valley. You might even see me zipping by you on my motorcycle.

With the incoming winter we need to be especially diligent in how we stay warm. We have an article loaded with tips on how to safely keep your home warm during the winter. There are some important safety considerations to keep in mind so be sure to check out our information.

It goes without saying that some of us will need to undergo some surgery or medical procedure. It is important to be informed as to exactly what you should do before and after your procedure. Our article gives you solid information that will help you be prepared.

This is the time to review your Medicare status and determine if you need to make any changes. We have included listings for Lehigh and Northampton counties that list the locations where you can find out where you stand now and get help determining what, if any, changes you may need.

Lastly, Veterans Day is in this month.

Things To Do With Grandkids Mystery Unearthed: The Extraordinary Story of Two Lenape Rock Shelters

In 1942, amateur archaeologists discovered two rock shelters near the town of Broomall, Pennsylvania.

They uncovered a skeleton and thousands of Native American artifacts in one of the rock shelters. This new exhibit presents a life-size replica of the Broomall Rock Shelters that shows how Lenape families or hunting parties may have occupied them for centuries. The exhibit also includes some of the hundreds of items excavated from the site such as 200 stone and bone tools, pendants, over 1000 decorated ceramics fragments, and European trade goods. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children 12-17 and seniors over 60, and free for children under 12. Cruising the Valley Landscape During the Fall

One of the best parts of the Fall season is seeing our landscape change color. I do not know anyone who is not impressed by the beauty in our area as trees and bushes change from variants of green to beautiful shades of orange, yellow and other colors.

Many of us jump in our vehicles and just drive around the Valley taking in the views. If you want to take a scenic cruise this fall, we have a list and description of our Valley and surrounding area.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary

The world’s first refuge for birds of prey and an international center for raptor conservation.

The 2,600 acre mountaintop preserve offers incredible scenic overlooks, eight miles of trail, a Visitor Center, native plant garden, and the Acopian Center for Conservational Learning.

The drive there, including on Hawk Mountain Road, offers nice views of farms and of mountains. The views from the sanctuary’s mountaintop overlooks are spectacular.

You typically can enjoy a colorful landscape there through early November. Visitors also can watch the famous Annual Autumn Hawk Watch through Dec. 15, during which visitors can see hawks, eagles and falcons migrating

The Delaware Water Gap is a water gap on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through a large ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. The gap constitutes the southern portion of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which is used primarily for recreational purposes, such as rafting, canoeing, swimming, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing.

The park is called the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It runs along a 40-mile section of the Delaware River, stretching from Monroe County northward to the outskirts of Milford, Pike County. A 27-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs along much of the eastern boundary of the park. A good drive to view the changing leaves is along route 611, from Portland to Delaware Water Gap borough. Once at the recreation area, you can drive more than 100 miles of scenic roadways through the park. Historic and cultural sites include the Minisink Archaeological Site, historic buildings at Millbrook Village, N.J., Peters Valley Craft Center and Native American archaeological sites. A nice scenic drive is on Route 534 through the park to Beltzville Lake.

It’s known for the Boulder Field, a striking boulder-strewn area, which is a National Natural Landmark. The 400-by1,800-foot boulder field can be reached by car on Boulder Field Road or by hiking the 3.5-mile Boulder Field Trail from the trail head on route 534. Hikes includes ones that follow the course of Sand Spring Run. Dams at some points create scenic lakes. The Hawk Falls Trail leads to a popular waterfall. The best drives to see foliage are on Route 903, from Fern Ridge to Jim Thorpe, and on Route 209 with views of the walls of Lehigh Gorge. Other ways to enjoy the colors: Take a downhill bike ride along the D&L Trail (formally known as the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor). The Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway offers roundtrip train rides that follow the Lehigh River, travel through the Glen Onoko area and go into the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Why Do Leaves Change Color?

As autumn closes out the days get shorter and shorter.

This is how the trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter. During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live off the food they stored during the summer. They begin to shut down their food-making factories. The green chlorophyll disappears from the leaves.

As the bright green fades away, we begin to see yellow and orange colors. Small amounts of these colors have been in the leaves all along. We just can’t see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyll.

The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like maples, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the online slots leaves turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees like oaks is made from wastes left in the leaves.

It is the combination of all these things that make the beautiful fall foliage colors we enjoy each year.

Special Older Adult Surgical Programs Help Seniors Prepare for and Recover from Surgery

By Mary DeHaven, St. Luke’s University Health Network Advances in surgery over the past several decades have significantly improved safety and made recovery much easier. But still, surgery remains a serious event. To ensure that everything goes smoothly and on schedule, patients must have blood work and other tests performed prior to surgery. Then, they must follow instructions on their care before, during and after the procedure.

Keeping on track can be challenging for many older adults, particularly if they have complex healthcare needs. And for those with a memory or cognitive impairment, it can be downright intimidating. Fortunately, some hospitals offer special services to help older adults navigate their surgical experiences.

For example, St. Luke’s University Health Network created the Senior Surgical Service Program (SSSP) to help older adults navigate the surgical process. The program is part of St. Luke’s Center for Positive Aging. “We developed the Senior

Surgical Service Program (SSSP) because we wanted to reduce some of the stress surrounding surgery that many of older patients experience,� says Ellen McHugh, Clinical Coordinator, PreAdmission Testing. “Our Senior Care Surgery Coordinator (SCSC) works closely with the surgeon’s office, the operating room staff and other health care professionals to guide patients through the process.�

The coordinator meets with the older adults and if available, their adult child, spouse or other support person, and carefully explains what’s

involved with the surgery and the steps needed to prepare the patient for the procedure. At that time, the SCSC preforms a comprehensive assessment via the Pre-Operative Geriatric Assessment Tool (POGAT) that identifies each patient’s individual needs. Assessment areas include: cognitive (Mini-CogR), functional performance, gait and mobility, nutrition, medication/pain management and lastly, caregiver burden. The coordinator also conducts depression and frailty screenings.

A detailed plan of care (POC) tailored to each patient’s individual needs is developed from this assessment. To ensure the best care possible, the care plan is shared with different members of the health care team including primary care doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologist, nurses, therapists and hospital pharmacists.

The SCSC serves as the patient’s point of contact, coordinating communication among the members of the healthcare team. “We take all the time needed to thoroughly answer all of their questions,� McHugh says. “In this way, we reduce confusion and relieve some of their fears.�

Medicare Open Enrollment: Prepare to Pick a Plan

Picking a plan is an important and personal decision. Each person has a unique set of priorities.

When you sit down to review your Medicare health and drug plan choices this year, keep track of the things you may want in a plan, and pick one that’s right for you.

Here are some things to keep in mind while you consider your choices: Does the plan cover the services you need?

Future health care needs can be hard to predict, but changes happen. Make sure you understand what services and benefits you’re likely to use in the coming year and find coverage that meets your needs. Although you may not have a specific need at the moment, you need to assume that as time goes on and we get older, it is more rather than less likely that you may need medical services. Protect yourself from catastrophic complications arising from a major illness.

If you have other types of health or prescription drug coverage, make sure you understand how that coverage works with Medicare. And, if you travel a lot, look to see if your plan covers you when you’re away from home. Drug prices can fluctuate wildly depending on certain conditions.

Spend time familiarizing yourself with your Medicare options.

No matter what plan you pick, you’ll get these benefits: • A discount of 60% on covered brand-name drugs if you reach the Part D prescription drug coverage gap (“donut hole”) • A free yearly “wellness” visit, so you can sit down with your doctor and talk about your health concerns and the best ways to stay healthy. Good Sleep Habits Are Key To Falling Asleep

Pain, stress, poor sleeping habits and certain medications can interfere with sleep, leading to insomnia.

Insomnia is a condition in which a person has trouble falling asleep, staying asleep throughout the night, or waking too early the next morning.

The causes of insomnia include • Stress and anxiety • Depression (some patients have trouble sleeping others sleep too much) • Medical conditions, including chronic pain, breathing difficulties, overactive thyroid, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease • Caffeine and nicotine • Alcohol (may help one to fall asleep but it prevents deep sleep leading to awakening in the middle of the night) • Certain medications like heart and blood pressure medications, antidepressants, decongestants and corticosteroids • Poor sleep habits • Worrying about not being able to sleep Treatment of insomnia may include both drug and behavioral therapies. Prescription sleeping pills are prescribed based on which sleeping difficulty the patient is experiencing and if the patient has other conditions, such as depression. Some drugs are used to help one fall asleep initially, while others are ideal to help one fall back asleep in the middle of the night. Medications may be prescribed but are only intended for short term use, due to their side effects and the potential to lead to dependence. When a patient begins experiencing insomnia, behavioral therapies should be tried first.

These therapies include an introduction to new sleep behaviors: • Going to bed at same time every night and waking at same time each morning (including weekends) • Avoiding anything mentally, physically, or emotionally stimulating right before bed • Beginning a daily relaxation ritual to remind your body it is time to sleep (breathing exercises, warm bath, relaxing stretches) • Avoiding daytime naps • Keeping the temperature of room cool • Removing clock to discourage clock-watching • Avoiding spending too much time awake in bed (Get out of bed if not asleep within twenty minutes and do something relaxing)

Other strategies that may improve sleep include: • Reviewing your other medications with your physician or pharmacist to see if your they may be affecting your sleep • Taking effective pain medication if necessary for a good night’s sleep • Getting regular exercise but not too close to bedtime • Eating a healthy, well balanced diet.

Prescription sleep aids can play a role in helping individuals fall sleep but should only be used for a short period of time. Developing good sleeping habits will help with the long term treatment of insomnia.

The Second Childhood

Wiktionary.org defines “second childhood as, “The period or state of cognitive decline of an elderly person, characterized by childlike judgment and behavior. A childlike state in any adult, resulting from mental illness, trauma, or other conditions.”

Not a very flattering picture! When an adult acts like a child — playing with toys, talking baby talk, not taking responsibility for his or her actions — we may excuse it as participation in one’s “second childhood.”

Adults are expected to act like adults. When the Corinthians were acting irrationally, the apostle Paul encouraged them, “Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature” (1 Corinthians 14:20). He expected them to be mature, or adult, in their thinking, but innocent regarding evil. Paul also used the illustration of mature behavior in chapter 13, verse 11: “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” He made a distinction between childhood and adulthood.

There is an analogy in the spiritual realm. God requires that believers submit to the authority of church leaders so the body of Christ will grow. “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Ephesians 4:11-14). God’s children are to gain adult discernment, wisdom, and stability. The source of spiritual nourishment for this growth is the Word of God: “Like

newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2).

Now, growth to maturity implies a start in immaturity, or childhood. This would mean a beginning of spiritual life, and this is what the Bible teaches.

When Jesus explained the kingdom of God to Nicodemus (John 3), he told him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (3:3). Nicodemus thought Jesus meant physical birth, but he meant a spiritual rebirth. To be saved, a citizen of the heavenly kingdom, a person must, in the spiritual sense, enter a second childhood.

A physical second childhood may be an annoyance.

At one point, the disciples found actual little children to be annoying, unworthy of Jesus’ time and attention (Luke 18:5-17). However, Jesus used these children as an example of the innocent trusting attitude needed to become his disciple (Mark 10:13-15). This even involves discipline from our Heavenly Father (Hebrews 12:5-11; Revelation 20:6, 14).

To enter that second childhood takes faith. A person cannot turn back the clock and slide down the birth canal again. Just as we play no part in our natural birth, we contribute nothing to our spiritual birth (John 1:12-13). This birth is wrought by believing the Word of God: “[S]ince you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

The old adage is true: “Born once, die twice. Born twice, die once.” Being born physically is one thing; being born again spiritually is everything!

by Diane Schrameyer, Director of Senior Corps RSVP I don’t think there is another time of year when we spend so much time “counting our blessings” and feeling a sense of gratitude for all that we have as we do during this month.

The chill in the air is accompanied by so many signs signaling we are heading towards those holidays when we plan for special time with loved ones. Maybe those family meals start with an acknowledgement of the many things we each have to be thankful for. We count our blessings and hold those we love even closer.

Certainly we’re aware of an increase in appeals pointing us to ways we can help those less fortunate and struggling. A coat drive for children, an appeal to fill food baskets for families in need, a call for donations of turkeys - just to name a few.

It seems there is a stronger motivation to look for ways to help others at this time of year. Perhaps there is even a deeper awareness of how fortunate we are as a “spotlight” is shone on the needs and struggles of those around us.

I am truly grateful for those times I am made aware of someone else’s struggles. It usually happens just as I find myself bemoaning some challenge I’m dealing with and am starting to feel sorry for myself. Learning about the greater struggle of someone else snaps me out of my “pity party” and gets me on a much better track.

When I am feeling overwhelmed with phone calls I need to remind myself of the lady who told me she checks her phone every so often to see if it’s working because it never rings. No one should feel this lonely and isolated.

When I get frustrated about waiting in line at the grocery store to check out I should remind myself of those who are in line at our local food banks and who would probably be thrilled if their circumstances meant a grocery store line instead.

When I look at the list of emails and reports I have to wade through I need to remind myself to be grateful that I learned how to read and comprehend what I was reading when I was in grade school, unlike so many of our students who are struggling to gain those skills and falling behind.

If I’m stuck in traffic and frustrated because there are so many cars on the roads in the Valley I can remind myself that at least I can get where I want to go. I think about all the elderly people who can no longer can drive themselves and have no way to get to their appointments or to the grocery store.

No one should be this anxious or feel helpless about getting these basic needs met.

Maybe you’re a bit like me and need to remind yourself about all the ways you are “Blessed” and then go about being a “Blessing” to someone else.

Helping out with small tasks can make a real difference in the lives of people who assistance.

If you can drive someone to an appointment, grocery shop, make a visit or deliver a meal you can help a senior remain safely at home.

Compassion and a willingness to help are the only skills needed.

2 hours a week, or even 2 hours a month, DOES make a difference.
