FROM THE PUBLISHER

Getting older is only fun for pre-adolescent kids. For the rest of us, it is an unpleasant fact of life, and while we cannot slow the hands of time, we can choose how we manage it.

Since 2006, LIFESTYLES Over 50 has sought to educate and equip seniors, boomers, and caregivers to live vibrant and healthy lives. For 2023, we transformed our format to be a quarterly directory and magazine, to provide our readers with access to community services, informative articles, timely information, and hopefully a few good laughs with jokes, puzzles, and nostalgia. The new format is designed to meet the needs of our community and to empower readers to make healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and souls!

Common Scenarios

Hospital Discharge Unsafe at Home Memory Issues

After a fall or other health crisis, a senior is discharged from the hospital to skilled nursing or undergoes therapies to return to their living situation and lifestyle. Sometimes the normal routine and living situation must change to accommodate recovery time and the long-term health needs. See the services that are in the Aging in Place category.

Most older adults desire to remain in their home for as long as possible. At some point the individual needs services to help them remain safely at home. This may include adult day services, non-medical home care, home health care, and home modifications like grab bars and stair lifts. See the services that are in the Aging in Place category.

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is on the rise. Those with memory issues have specialized needs, and depending on the level of cognitive impairment, there are numerous services to enhance quality of life, mitigate the effects of dementia, and keep the individual safe. Stand-Alone Memory Care Communities and Personal Care Homes offer memory care services in the Housing Options category.

Aging in Grace

Navigating the maze of senior care is complex. One must consider not only desired lifestyle but also physical, mental, social, and spiritual conditions. This Senior Care Map is designed as a starting point for planning. Answer the questions and read the outcome suggestions on the facing page.

Senior Care Map Outcomes

Below are suggestions for mapping of care. Please note that the below information is intended for educational purposes only, and decisions should be made only after discussing your situation with a qualified professional. We recommend that you call the organizations that offer the services that you are interested in. If you do not have any idea where to start you can call our Care Team at 855-233-7034.

If you do not need care in the imminent future it is still wise to have a plan in place. It is recommended that you continue to stay active, engage in social activities and have your financial and legal matters in order. Discuss your end-of-life wishes with your family to ease the burden on your family.

2 & 3

Having a plan of care, working with a doctor and forming a strategy to address the memory deterioration may slow the advancement of Alzheimer’s and dementia. Sometimes individuals are able to remain home safely with the help of reliable family members and other caregivers. This includes having a caregiver assisting with home help, companionship and personal care tasks. It could also include attending an adult day care center or an all-inclusive care program. For individuals who value social interaction, it is important to continue attending family, volunteer, church, and other events as you are able. Family caregivers should also seek caregiver support groups.

Individuals with sharp minds but needing some assistance around the house benefit from home care. They can receive weekly hours of service proportional to their needs and direct the caregiver to help where necessary, including transportation to doctors or other appointments, running errands, personal care, light housekeeping and more. These individuals may also consider adult day programs that provide transportation to and from the adult day centers. Family caregivers also benefit from the assistance.

Those looking to relocate may benefit from the wellrounded offerings of senior and independent living facilities and personal care homes / assisted living facilities. These communities are age-friendly, accessible and offer options for group outings and other activities. Those who are mobile may prefer a senior or independent living community since they are not in need of the support services offered by the personal care homes / assisted living facilities. For those who need assistance with activities of daily living, a personal care home / assisted living facility would provide the services necessary to fit their needs.

& 8

Individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia may consider senior / independent living as long as they are accompanied by a spouse or family caregiver, or supported with caregiving services. Those in more advanced stages of Alzheimer’s or dementia should seek information on personal care or memory care communities that have services on-site, including secured dementia units and trained staff.

Financial Matters

One aspect that each individual will need to assess in all care outcomes is the cost of each level of care. One must consider their financial resources and work with a qualified professional to understand which options they can afford. In some cases, the individual will pay from their own resources because government programs, insurances, and other outside funding programs may not suffice.

Adult Day Centers Aging in Place

Adult Day Centers provide a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services for adults in a community-based group setting. Services are designed to provide social and some health services for adults who need supervised care in a safe place outside the home during the day. They also afford caregivers respite from the demanding responsibilities of caregiving. Adult day care facilities for the elderly are licensed and inspected by the Department of Aging. Costs for Adult Day Centers range from $60/day to $100+/day on average in the Lehigh Valley. The costs are paid for with private funds or may be partially or fully covered by long-term care insurance, Veterans Assistance, or Medicaid through the county’s Aging Waiver Program.

Moravian Hall Square Nazareth, PA

Life Plan Communities, formerly known as Continuing Care Retirement Communities, are residential living alternatives to traditional housing for active adults. These communities provide comprehensive services and amenities for the residents living in them, including short and long-term health care. live independently. Some are affiliated with health care facilities that provide additional support if needed.

Ombudsman provides assistance with investigating and resolving complaints brought by, or on behalf of, longterm care consumers such as residents of nursing homes, personal care, assisted living facilities, and recipients of home health care. Contact 1-800-677-1116 or Eldercare.gov for your local ombudsman.

Personal Care Homes are Pennsylvania State licensed facilities that offer semi-private and private rooms to those who need assistance with living activities but do not require skilled nursing care. The level of assistance varies among the communities.

Respite Care is short-term care and relief to enable those caring for a loved one in their home to have a break for rest and relaxation or time away to do errands. Personal care homes typically offer respite care as a short-term (several days) admission to the facility.

Well, the holidays are finally over—or are they? Don’t worry, I’m not going to ask you to crank up the oven, hit the malls, and get out the decorations again. I’m only going to ask you to consider the holidays.

Sometimes, we get a little extra tingle or joy or excitement or some indescribable feeling of awe or something during holidays, especially the religious ones like Resurrection Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. There’s just something special about setting aside a day to celebrate Christ’s birth, resurrection, and goodness to us. But, do we need special days to celebrate these things?

The word “holiday” is from a barelypronounceable Old English word for “holy day.” It is a special day set aside for religious purposes. Interestingly, we apply the term to any “official” day, whether sanctioned by the church or the government, even if there is no religious meaning, like July Fourth and Labor Day. The British use of “holiday” indicates “vacation.”

Should we, as Christians, have some days that are “holier” than others? Should we live any differently on certain days than on regular days? Should we take a vacation from worship?

Paul tells us in Romans 14:5, 6: “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord.” In other words, God is not so much concerned with holidays as He is with the attitude of the heart. Colossians 2:16 reminds us that God is not concerned with whether or not you celebrate Christmas, birthdays, or other recognized holidays, as long as your motive is to glorify Him. You can’t be intimidated by, nor are you to intimidate or look down upon, those who teach and practice differently. It’s not the day—it’s the attitude that God honors. One day is no more holy than another.

Jesus Christ is the same every day (Hebrews 13:8). His blessings are the same every day (Psalm 68:19). God’s faithfulness is manifest every day (Lamentations 3:22, 23). We are to minister to one another daily (Hebrews 3:13). Other examples abound: Daniel prayed three times a day; the Psalmist sang His praises daily; and on and on it goes.

For the church age, the Scriptures do not prescribe any day as being any more special or holier than any other day. True, the Lord’s Day, Sunday, is set aside as a day to gather together to worship and minister as a body. But this is no more special, nor should we live any differently, than any other day. God has called us to be holy as He is holy, and he doesn’t expect any more or any less of His children based on the calendar.

So, enjoy the sights and sounds of your favorite holiday(s). Come to church on Sunday and Wednesday and whatever other days the church gathers. But don’t fall into the trap of acting more “holy” or serving the Lord on just those days and under those ideal circumstances. Celebrate the Lord’s goodness, share His blessings, and thank Him in everything at every time.

Have a nice “holy day,” no matter what day it is! Then you’ll never suffer from Post-Holiday Stress Syndrome!

Are My Parents Ready for Senior Living?

Are you wondering if it’s time for your parents to move into a senior living community?

Coming to the realization that your parents may not be able to do the things they did so effortlessly once before, can be very difficult. They may require more help and assistance to get tasks done, including taking care of themselves.

Here are some signs to help you know that your parents might be ready for senior living:

Noticeable health decline

As we grow older, our cells and tissue become more susceptible to illnesses and diseases. Also, there is a higher risk of age-related diseases that one may not be able to handle by oneself. In the case where there’s no one to provide the hands-on care required for the elderly, a great opportunity is to explore senior living options to ensure that they get the care required.

When they start to feel isolated

As your parents age, they may not be able to move around as much and as easily as they used to. They might be able to take long walks, cycle, or take several buses to arrive at their destination - and they may not even be able to drive. This inability to move around may cause them to feel isolated, since it’s difficult to go out and mingle with people and carry-on daily tasks. Exploring senior living options allows them to associate with other people and make them feel what it is like to be part of a community.

When they can no longer perform basic care for themselves

When you notice that your parents can no longer

perform basic care for themselves, then it might be a perfect time explore senior living options. If they need help performing simple tasks like getting properly dressed, or they have difficulty finding things around the house, or they can’t keep the home clean and tidy on their own, these are good indicators that they might ready for senior living.

Poor eating habits

As people age, they may begin to exhibit poor eating habits because they might find it difficult to prepare meals, or they may even forget to eat meals altogether. These poor eating habits may lead to other ailments and even noticeable weight loss. As such, it is best to explore senior living options where there are health workers dedicated to making sure they’re well fed and taken care of.

They can no longer handle and manage money properly

Handling financial responsibilities might become difficult as people begin to age, especially if there’s no one around to help.

You should get your parents into a senior community where they don’t have to worry about bills or other financial responsibilities. A senior living community ensures that all their needs are properly met without putting a lot of stress on them.

In 1789, Pennsylvania’s own founding father, Benjamin Franklin, wrote that “in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” But there’s something else that you can count on, stress. While its causes may change over time, stress persists.

Psychotherapist Patricia Fox of St. Luke’s Behavioral Health Integration program said stressors for people over 50 vary depending on their age and life circumstances. However, many common sources of stress are:

• Retirement

• Health issues

• Caring or concern for elderly parents, adult children or grandchildren

• Loss of friends and loved ones

• Financial concerns

• Not being able to do things you once enjoyed

• Age discrimination

• Loss of position or status Retirement creates its own set of stressors, she said. Many people miss their daily routine. Some experience a loss of purpose. Others mourn the loss of their “work family,” and the relationships they built over years or even decades. Fox encourages patients to try to maintain relationships with former co-workers.

“I know a woman who retired from a bank,” Fox said. “She still makes cookies and goes and visits with her former coworkers at the bank once a week because ‘those were her people.’” Some married couples, even those who have been married for many

Tips for Coping with Stress

years, find retirement offers a little too much togetherness.

“During COVID, many people spent a lot of time alone with their spouse and got a taste of what retirement will bring,” she said. “Some found out that they didn’t love spending time with their partner; they didn’t even like it.”

She recommends people maintain their autonomy so when it comes to retirement, their whole world doesn’t revolve around their spouse. Instead, find activities that you enjoy. For example, Fox loves hiking, running and walking. While her spouse likes hunting, generally, he prefers more sedentary activities.

Caregiving is another common source of stress for older adults, whether caring for aging parents or adult children and grandchildren. She reminds her patients that “Adult children and parents are adults. Unless they’re deemed incompetent, they’re capable of making their own decisions. Sometimes there are consequences for those decisions. It might

be good or not so good, but there are consequences. And you can’t be responsible for the results of the decisions of another adult human being, whether you gave birth to them, or they gave birth to you. Making that separation is part of self-care.”

When parents need help caring for themselves, it can create a challenging role reversal, and it’s important not to treat aging parents like children. While you should respect their decisions, you don’t have to do everything yourself. You may need to seek outside help, such as your county’s Office of the Area Agency on Aging.

“It’s a tightrope you have to walk because, in their mind, they’re still the parent,” she said. “Like, when my mom was still alive, I was her preferred person, and I had to continually remind myself that I was doing the best I could do based on her decisions.” Fox’s mother, who resided in another state, wanted to live in her own apartment. Fox visited her on weekends but couldn’t be there every

night and still keep her job.

“You don’t have to be a superhero,” she said. “You’re not responsible for your parents’ happiness, but you are responsible for helping them get the help they need. You’re not responsible for anybody’s happiness other than your own.”

Meanwhile, everyone should watch for warning signs that a loved one might be suffering from the stress of their life situation and try to intervene by encouraging them to get professional counseling.

Fox said, “I had a 90-year-old patient who was in a wheelchair. She had been diagnosed with leukemia and was undergoing chemotherapy. And she’s said, what is my purpose here? So, I got her to open up. I asked her how much does your husband love you? How much do your children love you and your grandchildren? You have a great grandbaby on the way. When people question their value, a simple reminder can mean a lot. Remind them that they mean a lot to you and that you’re so glad they’re here.”

Six Strategies for Reducing Stress to Preserve Your Heart Health

A small amount of stress can be healthy, motivating you to meet deadlines and cross things off your to-do list. But research shows that chronic stress can be just as unhealthy as eating a high-fat diet and having a sedentary lifestyle.

The behavioral health professionals at St. Luke’s Penn Foundation discuss six strategies for reducing stress to preserve your heart health.

Here are six strategies for reducing your stress to preserve your heart health:

cery store. Instead, stand there and give your brain a break. Our brains need natural rest periods throughout the day to recoup and face the next challenge or situation.

3. Create a Schedule: To help reduce the low-level stressors that most often affect you, reflect on what triggers you the most and plan. For example, if cooking dinner during the week causes you stress, try planning a weekly menu on Sunday night. The 10 minutes that it takes you to plan your menu for the week might just be the key to calmer weekday evenings.

4. Prioritize Your To-Do List: If you feel pressure to accomplish every task on your to-do list as soon as possible, create two separate lists – one for items that need to be done right away and one for items that can wait.

5. Exercise Your Options: You’ve probably heard quite often that exercise is a great way to reduce stress. Physical activity releases endorphins, feelgood brain chemicals that help you feel calm and sleep better, which in turn helps to lower or eliminate stress. Make sure to pick activities that you enjoy so that you are more likely to stick with them. In a moment of intense stress, try moving fast for one minute – jog in place, move from one foot to the other, or shake your hands in the air. This will get you out of your brain and focused on your physical body.

1. Breath: When you are stressed out, watch your breath. Focusing on your breathing directs your attention away from what’s making you feel overwhelmed. According to the American Heart Association, breathing exercises can reduce heart disease risk. Deep breathing can get you back to a less inflammatory state.

2. Take Phone Breaks: Don’t scroll through your phone when you are waiting in line at the gro-

6. Focus on Having More Fun: The more you take care of yourself and experience pleasure, the better you will be able to handle stressful situations when they come your way. Consider the stressful parts of your day and find ways to make them more enjoyable. For example, if you have a long commute to work, try listening to the audio version of a book you’ve always wanted to read or update your playlist to include your favorite songs. There are many tools for reducing stress; you must find what works best for you. Remember, you have the power within you to find your inner calm.

Q: In what ways can a hand surgeon help you?

Dr. Jacob: Hand surgeons treat various conditions related to problems with the hands and forearms, from tendonitis and broken bones to arthritis of the hands and other chronic conditions.

Dr. Sumarriva: The most important thing we do is restore our patient’s use of their hands so they can get back to doing the activities they enjoy to just simple tasks around the house. Our goal is to improve our patient’s quality of life.

What are the most common conditions you treat?

Dr. Jacob: Besides fractures of the fingers and wrists, the most common conditions are carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, tendonitis and thumb arthritis. Carpal tunnel is caused by a compressed nerve in the wrist, and can cause weakness, pain, and disturbances of sensation in the hand and fingers. A finger that gets stuck in a bent position is a trigger finger.

When and why should I see a hand surgeon?

Dr. Sumarriva: See us when your symptoms bother you enough that you need to do something about it. All we do is hand surgery, so we have the expertise and keep abreast of innovations.

Dr. Jacob: In addition to pain relief, we help reduce numbness in the hands. Numbness causes people to drop objects and prevents them from doing common tasks like cooking and shopping. Even patients with significant sensory loss can improve.

Dr. Sumarriva: I take the time to ensure we find the best option for each patient, whether it’s injections, bracing, therapy or surgery. The care at St. Luke’s is fantastic. The culture is patient-focused, and the facilities are amazing!

Dr. Jacob: I’m fortunate to be in a situation where I can make decisions on patient care based on what I think is right for the patient. A fracture doesn’t necessarily need surgery. Often, there are other ways to treat it. I make a point to involve the patient and explain different options. If someone’s function is almost normal, there’s no reason to do surgery.

Drs. Jacob and Sumarriva see patients at various St. Luke’s Orthopedic Care locations throughout the Lehigh Valley. To schedule an appointment, call 484-526-1735.

Presidential Peculiarities To Consider on Presidents Day

• Washington didn't have enough money to get to his own inauguration, so he borrowed $600 from a neighbor.

• Woodrow Wilson was the first president to earn a Ph.D. However, he really wanted to be a vaudeville actor. Like every boy's dream, he ran away to join the circus. He knew what awaited him when he got home, so he stuffed his pants with padding to soften his father's "greeting."

• General Eisenhower loved to paint but his drawing skills were generally bad. He would ask someone else to draw pictures, then he would paint inside the lines. And so, in the 1950s, the national paint-by-numbers fad was born!

• Calvin Coolidge was a fun kinda guy. He loved to ride a horse—in his bedroom. Before you start picturing "The Godfather," Cal's horse was a mechanical bucking horse he rode every day.

• When Richard Nixon was running for president after being Ike's vice president, Ike was asked to give an example of one idea he accepted from Dick. His reply: "If you give me a week, I might think of one."

• After shaking hands for three hours at a reception, Lincoln said his hand was "almost paralyzed." It was hard for him to hold a pen. After dropping it once, he persevered and picked it up again — and signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

• Thomas Jefferson led the first inaugural parade through Washington—sort of. Actually, he was just walking back to his boarding house after being sworn in, and a crowd of people started following him.

• Andrew Jackson was the first president to be handed a baby to kiss while campaigning. Not relishing the thought, he passed the baby to his secretary of war instead.

• James Polk had his gallstones removed at age 16—and demanded it be done without anesthesia.

Why it’s called “vice” president

• When Al Gore was running for president, he

tangled with a heckler for shouting what Gore thought to be the ultimate insult. The heckler told Al he had all the traits of a really good vice president.

• Daniel Webster declined the VP nomination, saying, "I do not choose to be buried until I am really dead."

• VP Thomas Marshall's claim to fame came when he was listening to a boring speech. He loudly commented to an aide, "What this country needs is a really good five-cent cigar.:

• Telegram from VP Marshall to VP-nominee Calvin Coolidge: "Please accept my sincere sympathy."

Romantic Ribbing for Valentine’s Day

Better to have loved a short man than never to have loved a tall.

Love is blind—and marriage is an eye-opener!

Becky: Do you love me with all your heart and soul?

Dave: Uh- huh.

Becky: Do you think I’m the most beautiful girl in the world?

Dave: Uh-huh.

Becky: Do you think my lips are like rose petals?

Dave: Uh-huh.

Becky: Oh, Dave, you say the most beautiful things!

One girl to another: There’s never a dull moment when you’re out with Wilbur—it lasts the whole evening.

Boy: If you refuse to marry me, I’ll jump off a 500foot cliff!

Girl: That’s a lot of bluff.

Boy: Will you marry me?

Girl: No, but I’ll always admire your good taste.

He: If you give me your phone number, I’ll call you.

She: It’s in the book.

He: Good. What’s your name?

She: It’s in the book, too.

St. Patrick’s Surprising Story

St. Patrick’s feast day is traditionally held on March 17, the date of his death. On that day, as the saying goes, “Everyone is Irish!” Ironically, Patrick himself was not Irish. However, you can still wear your sweatshirt that says, “Kiss me, I’m Irish!”, even if you’re not.

Although he is the patron saint of Ireland, he was born in Britain to wealthy Romanized parents. He lived primarily in the 5th century, and much of his life is a mystery. He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 A.D. Patrick is primarily known for bringing Christianity to Ireland and evangelizing the Picts and Anglo-Saxons. The Picts were a tribe from what is now Scotland and were known for painting and tattooing their bodies. Anglo-Saxons were Germanics who ruled territories now known as parts of England and Wales.

Patrick is also known for two short works, the Confessio, a spiritual autobiography, and his Letter to Coroticus, a denunciation of British mistreatment of Irish Christians.

Patrick’s father, Calpurnius, was a deacon and a minor local official, but he may have only taken on the office because of tax incentives. There is no evidence that the family was particularly religious, and church offices were regularly bought and sold for financial and political reasons.

When he was 16, Patrick was kidnapped from his father’s villa by Irish raiders. For six miserable years, he literally slaved as a herdsman, finding time in his loneliness and fear to dedicate himself to his faith. Patrick dreamed that a ship was ready for his escape, then escaped from his master and fled to Britain. After near starvation and another brief captivity, he made it back to his family.

Patrick felt called to Ireland but hesitated due to his poor education and lack of confidence. However, his confidence in the Lord overcame his reluctance and he set about preaching and baptizing, often under threat of martyrdom.

Although a lot of miracles and visions are unverifiably attributed to him (such as driving the snakes out of Ireland), and he was never canonized as a saint, Patrick was responsible for introducing Irish culture into Christian lessons, such as creating the famous Celtic cross with the sun in the middle.

After 40 years of living in poverty, teaching, traveling, and working tirelessly, Patrick died on March 17, 461, in Saul, where he had built his first church. As is the case with many ancient figures, countless legends have grown up around Patrick, such as his use of a shamrock to explain the Trinity. One thing we know for sure: He never attended a St. Patty’s Day parade. The first one was held in the U.S. on March 17, 1601, in a Spanish colony under an Irish bishop! Eventually, homesick Irish soldiers in Boston followed suit. The rest is history, fraught with green clothing, beer, parades, leprechauns, and toasts.
