There’s something about the word “summer” that brings about a mind shift. It’s the promise of relaxing days, barbecues, bright sun (OK, we have that all year long here in the Valley, but in the summer, it still feels different somehow), and fewer responsibilities.

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy … "

Here’s to making fun summertime memories!

16

I always love our July issue because we tend to focus on light, fun summer topics; food; drinks; and getaways. We hope you can kick back, perhaps by a pool, lake, or on a raft with a cold drink, and relax with this nice, easy read!

As a native to Arizona, my best childhood memories include warm summer night swim parties, backyard BBQs with family and friends, music festivals, tubing down the Salt River, and boating at one of our many beautiful Arizona lakes. Oh, and let’s not forget the 4th of July and all the fun that comes with cele brating the good old U.S.A.!

I don’t know about you, but despite our hot summertime tem peratures here in the Valley of the Sun, I quite enjoy the slow down of summer. My kids get a break from the grind of school, we get to do a bit of traveling, and honestly, it’s just nice to take a breath from all the hustle and bustle.

The Arista philosophy is that everyone should be able to have a resource to help them make their design dreams a reality in a creative space. With that goal in mind, they opened a new showroom in Tempe in 2017.

Arista offers a boutique experience, and works closely with its customers, from selecting a material they love to staying within their budgets.

Arista sources directly from quarries and producers around the world. Along with the natural stone, they carry engineered stones such as quartz, which they source from Italy and Malaysia, and porcelain that is manufactured in Spain.

AristaStones.com

“They wanted to create a space where each client can feel informed, involved, and inspired when designing their new space,” explains Vidya.

19| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/PARADISEVALLEYJULY 2022

“Here at Arista, we follow our slogan of a stone for every style and a price for every budget,” Vidya explains. “We recognize that at the end of the day, it’s an expensive decision to invest in your home, and we’d rather customers feel 100% satisfied with their selec tion rather than trying to get the sale.”

While vacationing in Arizona, the family fell in love with the Valley, and a few years later, decided to build a home here. They discovered the same lack of resources for stone, so decided to bring their expertise to the Phoenix area. They opened Arista Quartz & Natural Stones as the Arizona sister store to the East Coast business.

Sourcing the right stone, whether it be natural or manufactured, can be a complicated process.

“We don’t expect anyone to come in and know the intricacies of each type of material,” says Vidya. “That’s why our staff is here.”

Most homeowners only build a home or do a major remodel once or twice in their lives. It’s an exciting time, but can be stressful without the right guidance. Back in 2001, while building their first home in a small Massachusetts town, husband and wife Harsh and Liliette Walia found sourcing stone materials to be one of the most difficult tasks. The Walias found the process arduous, the selections limited, and little guid ance determining the pros and cons of different stones. So, they decided to become the experts and founded Granite & Marble Depot near Boston.

Today, Arista is a family-run business with Harsh and Liliette joined by their daughters, Vidya and Jo. They continue to carry out that initial desire to help others avoid the frustrations they experienced with their first house. Arista is a company created by homeowners and for homeowners, offering hands-on assistance and expertise.

Among the most popular summer dishes is ceviche, which is of South American ori gin (so a similar hot climate to the Valley). It is typically made from fresh raw fish that has been cured in citrus juices. CRUjiente Tacos has a spectacular take on the summer staple, which is as popular in Mexico as it is in its native Peru. The dish ($15) features fresh white fish that are cubed and then paired with shrimp. They are then mari nated together in a tart mixture of citrus juices, and then tossed with spicy jala peños, Fresno peppers, cilantro, and olive oil. CruTacos.com

Savoring the Summer

Every summer, local chefs lighten up—well, with their dishes, at least.

Both Joyride Taco House and The Canal Club at The Scott Resort also feature sen sational ceviche options. Currently, Joyride offers a Sea Bass Ceviche ($13) with Aguachile rojo, pineapple, pickled Fresno chiles, red onions, cilantro, and scallions. At The Canal Club, shrimp is the star of the dish ($16) and they are complemented by lime, cucumber, and fresh-cut pico de gallo. JoyrideTacoHouse. com; TheCanalClubAZ.com

Finally, Diego Pops adds a pop of island and Asian flare to the dish. Its ceviche ($14) also starts with shrimp, cucumber, Fresno chili, red onions, tomatoes, and cucumber like those above. But it also features lemon grass, which provides a ramped-up citrus flavor with a hint of mint, as well as cilantro and coconut. It is even served in a hol lowed-out coconut for added visual appeal. Twin Peaks offers Blackened Fish Tacos ($12.49). The dish features wild-caught, ultra-mild grilled cod with pico de gallo,

Certainly, beyond what is served in cev iche, seafood and shellfish in general are popular during the summer months.

Similarly, though almost every dish at FLINT by Baltaire bursts with flavors, during the summer months its Grilled Swordfish ($39) is a showstopper. The center-cut swordfish loin is grilled over almond wood and paired with toasted Israeli couscous that has been tossed with an aromatic mix of finely diced fennel, radish, and sherry vinaigrette. Bonus: It is topped with tomato caper relish and lemon-infused olive oil for an added kick.

Though Bourbon & Bones is known for its high-end cuts of aged beef, don’t sleep on the shellfish at this Old Town favorite, especially the imported Alaskan king crab legs (MP), which are flown in weekly and cooked simply—just long enough for the iconic sweetness to emerge before they are chilled and plated with lemon, cocktail sauce, and a touch of melted butter. BourbonAndBonesAZ.com

Resort & Spa is also among the best places for sum mer seafood, especially if you’re a fan of Mediterranean and Southwest flavors. Right now, the halibut ($52)—bathed in a garlic broth versus heavy sauces or creams and paired with a touch of Spanish chorizo for bite, as well as an herbaceous salad, beluga lentils, and preserved lemon—is a can’t-miss item. RoyalPalmsHotel.com

TwinPeaksRestaurant.comElChorro also offers a delectable-but-light seafood dish with its Crab & Tuna Tower ($24). It boasts blue crab meat, as well as Ahi tuna. Both are layered perfectly with avocado, pico de gallo, and gluten-free corn tortilla chips. ElChorro.com

Italian eateries are also getting in on lighter bites. Of course, pasta and pizza are still available, but hot spots like EVO, NOOK Kitchen , and Marcellino Ristorante take special care to curate antipasto dishes and their own twists on starters,

as well as mains that marvel. Currently, EVO offers Grilled Octopus ($17) paired with spicy dried salami, as well as a garnishment of roasted potatoes. While new residents don’t move in until the fall, Clarendale Arcadia has an information cen ter near the building site that provides potential residents with a preview of what life will be like here. Prospective residents can also reserve spe cific apartments as leasing is in full swing.

When Stefanie Smith, executive director at Clarendale Arcadia, is asked about her favorite feature of the new senior residences, she has to pause before answering.

“This is a challenging question as I love every thing about our community,” she says.

Located in the Camelback Corridor, close to both Arcadia and Paradise Valley, Clarendale Arcadia senior residences offer metropolitan living with boutique hotel-style amenities and top-notch hospitality services.

She continues by sharing that, “Clarendale Arcadia is less than a mile from luxury shopping and dining, entertainment venues, and golf. The Copper and Sunset Terraces that make up our second-level amenity deck have such a luxury resort feel—I can’t wait for our residents to enjoy time by the heated pool, yoga in our outdoor fit ness area, or test their skill on the putting green. We are a pet-friendly community, and as dog lover myself, our dog park is another of my favorite features. I would be completely remiss if I didn’t mention our Mountain Vista Community Room on the fifth floor—this is a fantastic common/ multi-use space with floor-to-ceiling windows that showcase views of Camelback Mountain, Mummy Mountain, and Piestewa Peak.”

“The old adage ‘location, location, location’ is a major draw for Clarendale Arcadia,” Smith says. “There is nothing like us in the immediate area— luxury senior living as a rental, not buy-in or life plan. The gorgeous mountain and cityscape views are stellar, and with five levels and multiple oneand two-bedroom floor plans, there are many options. Our outdoor amenity spaces are modern, inviting, and spacious. We offer independent liv ing, assisted living and memory care, which will allow our residents to move through this contin uum as their lifestyle and care needs dictate.”

“All but a few independent living residences have balconies, with some that are quite expan sive,” she adds. “Some of our assisted living resi dences offer balconies, as well.”

Spanning six acres southeast of 32nd Street and Camelback Road, Smith believes that Clarendale Arcadia is an ideal option for local seniors.

In addition to offering a variety of living options, residences at Clarendale Arcadia are spacious and feature pendant lights, quartz countertops, soft-close drawers and cabinets, GE stainless steel appliances, and luxury vinyl plank flooring, among many other amenities, Smith notes.

“This part of the Valley is so vibrant, with peo ple in their 70s and beyond maintaining active lifestyles,” she says. “We felt there was an unmet need for luxury senior living, on a rental basis, that will allow this lifestyle to continue, while taking the hassle of homeownership and main tenance out of the equation yet adding a strong continuum of care and services.”

Desert Rider is inspired by modes of transportation in the Southwest that invite both reflection and in trospection of our collective cul tural imagination. While post-war culture of the 1950s has mytholo gized our dependence on and fasci nation with the automobile, this ex hibition connects more closely to the counterculture developments of the 1960s epitomized in the “Easy Rider” phenomenon that occurred simultaneously with various civil unrest movements.
