I love having my kids at home, but I’m not going to lie—this year has been a lot of togetherness and trying to find ways to accommodate individual needs. With hybrid learning and kids home on zoom classes, my house has felt a little bit like a library with a barrage of text messages received daily reminding me that I need to talk quieter because their zoom class can hear me. I know many of us have learned to be more flexible and creative about how we use and share our space this year. Although it has been challenging to find a new way of learning and working from home, I do value the extra time we have had together. As the temperatures start to warm up, and I dream about our next home renovation project of updating our outdoor living space, I know what truly matters is the atmosphere in our home and the love we give and receive. The food is a unique spin on traditional Thai dishes that reflect her style and taste. “This spring we will have five new fresh cocktails and two new dishes; Kai Jeaw Moo Wan, which is marinated sweet pork served with Thai street omelet, and Classic Thai Fried Rice with Moo Tod, which is marinated fried pork,” she says. She expressed that COVID has hit her business and family life hard and has presented a huge challenge. She is thankful to still be in business. Her ability to adapt has benefited her, and her loyal customers.

“We quickly went to delivery, take-out and curbside

only with no indoor dining for four months and were able to keep all our staff busy switching roles slightly to make everything work and everyone employed,” she says. “Once we found out we could start to open to outdoor dining we did a complete remodel of our patio to welcome customers to a quaint space that feels safe and comfortable. Before we found out we could start to have 50 percent dine-in capacity we decided to remodel the inside of the restaurant to create a fresh feeling to welcome our customers back. We have continued to offer curbside, delivery and take-out, and hope to be able to get back to full capacity soon.” She and her staff look forward to being able to smile at customers and give hugs, and in the meantime, she has launched a concept where she is offering a new line of products called J’Ann, that will allow anyone to cook fresh Thai food at home like a professional chef. That sounds like a delicious idea!

When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets. “You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says. In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast. “Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.

To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family. Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted. Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences. MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great? HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS: + Find a base color with pops of other colors. “Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.” If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room. + Consider wallpaper. “Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says. Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs. + Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.

DANA DUNAWAY HAS NEVER BUILT A HOME BEFORE. But the matriarch of this family of six was lucky to find professionals to guide her along every step of the way, even in the midst of a pandemic. Dana and husband, Bill, designed and built the perfect home for their four kids, ranging in age from third grade to high school, with Jay Jackson Builders’ help. But when it came to the windows of their new home, they turned to the same pros used by Tamara Day—Solar Sheild. Dunaway says that while many design decisions were simple and fun for her, window treatments were out of her depth. She asked interior designer Natalie McMillen for her thoughts and found Tim Sanders, founder of Solar Shield Blinds Shades Solutions. But what she got was much more than a single line of blinds.

“I met with him and Natalie at the house, and we went through every single window. We talked through what would look good, how it was going to function. And he asked about my kids-what they do and how we live. Then he gave me all these cool options. I thought, wow, I actually changed my mind. I thought, Okay, this is actually gonna work better. And I could not have been happier with the things he recommended. He’s much more than an installer; He actually has really cool design ideas,” says Dunaway. Those cool design ideas included treatments from several different lines that Solar Shield carriers. Sanders says that the variety of their stock is a function of their main goal—finding solutions for real people living in their homes.

These Adirondack Chairs are an easy project, and with just a few tools and wood from Home Depot, this is a project you can do in just a few hours. There are only a handful of things you will need to complete this project: a miter saw, drill and a kreg jig which you can all find at Home Depot, as well a few things you most likely have in your home workshop, which includes a tape measure and safety glasses.
