The models, along with the clothing and accessories, were provided by Abigail’s Apparel, at 124 South Main St. Abigail’s carries something for everyone and creates a pleasurable shopping experience—from the fun ‘40s-era music to the unique items of clothing, handbags and accessories. The customer service is by far the cherry on top of the sundae. “We pride ourselves in carrying fashion that you won’t find at the big box stores, and we are here to cater to your needs,” says owner Beth Mohr. “Abigail’s even has some items for the man in your life, including sandals, socks, sunglasses and fragrance.” There is always something new to find as you wander through this gem of a shop and see something different each time. Beth has created a unique destination boutique on Historic Main Street. She travels the country looking for the trendiest fashions at the most affordable prices for her customers. Don’t wait, though, for many items on the shelves are so unique that once they’re sold, they’re gone. It’s been eight years, and Abigail’s Apparel is going strong! The mission of the Foundry Art Centre is to connect people with the arts through exhibitions, performances, education and studio artists. The artists’ studios at the Foundry have open glass fronts on the mezzanine level of the building, allowing visitors to see artists at work and interact with them as they create. A variety of media are represented by these juried studio artists. The studios we photographed the models for this fashion feature included Botanicals By Nature, where artist Jody Williams holds drawing and painting botanical art classes. See BotanicalByNature.com for her work and more information. The cover photo was shot at the studio of Ann D. Croghan, who creates and teaches watercolor, oil, acrylic and drawing. To register for classes, email A.Croghan@sbcglobal.net. We also used as backdrops the artwork of Lisa Hinrichs at her studio, where she uses wool felt to create her art. The layers of silk and wool, ink and stitch result in unique textures and colors. See her website at LisaHinrichs.com. Finally, the hand-crafted baskets at the studio of Expedition Subsahara are beautiful and inspiring and are a must-see at the Foundry Art Centre. You can also see her work at ExpeditionSubsarhara.com.

SINCE THE FIRST HOUSE SHE REMODELED WITH HER PARENTS IN 1986, DEBBIE MCFARLAND HAS HAD A GOD-GIVEN GIFT OF SEEING THE POTENTIAL FOR WHAT CAN BE. Debbie, who became known as “Demo Debbie,” and her team of skilled craftsmen have been fixing up houses long before HGTV’s Fixer Upper was a hit, and she can completely relate to Chip Gaines and his love of demo.

Debbie McFarland
“There’s just something so fun about tearing down the old and building the new,” she says. Debbie has built her business, McFarland Interiors, around fulfilling the needs and desires of each homeowner, as well as increasing the value of their home. “Just because you’re dissatisfied with your current home, or parts of it, you don’t have to move and incur all the real estate and moving expenses,” she says. “You can stay in your current neighborhood and create the home you’ve always wanted. Or, I can develop a custom design for your new home.” Debbie can transform any part of a house but has a special passion for the kitchen, as the “heart of the home.” She offers 3D renderings of your kitchen to show you exactly what your new kitchen will look like. Depending on your specific goals, she’ll design a kitchen that will function best for your family and their needs. See more of Debbie’s work at McFarlandInteriors.com.

PREPARE TO BE INSPIRED LOCAL COMPANY GIVES BACK THROUGH FASHION
WHILE YOU MAY OUTWARDLY DISMISS NEW YORK FASHION WEEK (NYFW) AS BANAL AND PEDESTRIAN, ONE OF THOSE EVENTS THAT ONLY THE UBER-RICH ATTEND BECAUSE, WELL THEY CAN, AND THEY’RE BORED...ADMIT IT—THERE IS A PART OF YOU THAT IS JUST A BIT CURIOUS TO SEE HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT THEY MIGHT BE WEARING COME FALL OR SPRING. Although traveling to NYFW may be out of the question for you, you can still attend one of the most premier fashion shows right here in St. Charles. Bayer (formerly Monsanto), with the support of the United Way Multicultural Leadership Society, is presenting its 10th Annual INSPIRE Fashion Show October 4 at Ameristar Casino Resort Spa. The INSPIRE Fashion Show is one of the largest charity receptions and runway shows in the St. Louis area and, each year, raises more than $85,000 for United Way of Greater St. Louis. The show features local St. Louis designers, local vendors, community models and hosts around 500 attendees.

GIVING BACK
(CON TI N U ED)
According to Michelle Keller, a software developer at Bayer, and communications co-chair for INSPIRE Fashion Show, there are approximately 10 local designers and 100 models. Of those models, 12-24 represent other countries from around the world, bringing their clothing and culture to the fashion show from such places as South America, Japan, Romania, China and other locations. “We like to have different ethnic pieces of clothing because we are supporting the United Way.” Michelle says that last year’s goal was to raise $85,000. The goal is the same this year, and she expects to hit that mark again. This does not include the matching gift from Bayer, which last year, brought the $85,000 total to $130,000. “Bayer is always trying to be a part of the community. As an employee, I’ve been involved in the campaign, and it’s challenging. But it is a lot of fun to see people strut their stuff on the catwalk, which is something they might not otherwise do,” Michelle says. “And it’s for a good cause,” she adds. Each show has different opening acts, and this year is no different. The opening act this year will be Irish dancers, while the closing act will be Japanese dancers. The show is about an hour and a half, and those with VIP tickets can enjoy drinks, appetizers, shopping and entrance to the after-party, which will include more appetizers and drinks. Part of the show is designed around a Top Model award, given to one model who raises the most money for the charity. Every dollar raised equates to one vote. Keller says it’s a “fun competition that drives donations.” Last year, a male model won the award and made more money in donations than any other female model in the history of the event. “This event creates cohesiveness within the company and brings different people and departments together to help. It also showcases up-and-coming designers in the community,” Michelle says. If you are interested in volunteering, you can find information at STLInspireFashion. com/Get-Involved or for more information on the event, visit STLInspireFashion.com. 30
