February is our month of art—making, collecting, admiring and learning. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look at and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves. As you read about the artists and makers in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. So, South Fulton, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this month, remember to fill your heart too. Find what makes you feel alive—and don’t forget to share it with us.

“GOOD” FOOD

BAD PAIN By Pickens Patterson III, MD

the artist and is his creative response to the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement describes itself as a "call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society". #InHonor: Monoliths is a continuation of a series of portraits created to honor Blackness. Johnson states that, "this body of work speaks to the racial violence and discrimination currently occurring across America, particularly in the form of police brutality." He further describes that the faces in #InHonor: Monoliths reference validation, representing not only individuals, but in a deeper way the face of humanity. The stunning mixed media portraits speak to the pain of individuals and more broadly to the Black experience. Johnson created #InHonor: Monoliths to

I

n my medical practice, I am often faced with treating patients who suffer from chronic pain conditions whose pain is exacerbated by, or perhaps even caused by, carrying excessive weight. This is especially true in people reporting low back pain, which according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), is the leading cause of disability worldwide and effects 31 million Americans at any given time. It is the leading cause of disability in Americans under 45 years old, and more that 26 million Americans between ages 20 – 64 experience frequent back pain. Furthermore, adults with low back pain are often in worse physical and mental health than people who do not have low back pain. Adults reporting low back pain are three times as likely to be in fair or poor health, and more than four times as likely to experience serious psychological distress as people without low back pain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Dietary Guideline for Americans 2010, a healthy eating plan: • Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products • Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts • Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium) and added sugars • Stays within your daily caloric needs

As a physician trying to address the holistic needs of my patients, I am more interested in preventing unnecessary pain versus having to treat it. For example, I recommend the use of a food-intake/calorie tracking tool such as MyFitnessPal, and I often recommend physical therapy or fitness programs to improve mobility and healing. Bottom line: there are many unavoidable maladies in life such as accidents or degenerative diseases like arthritis, so our goal should be to take control of our health to delay or even avoid the often associated pain.

REVEREND DR. DWIGHT ANDREWS LECTURES AT ATLANTA HIGH MUSEUM The High Museum presented a special afternoon of live music inspired by “Something Over Something Else”: Romare  Bearden’s Profile Series.  This was a musical journey through the exhibition with two guides of extraordinary world-wide reputations in the art and music community – Dwight Andrews and Robert G. O’Meally – as they explored how Bearden’s Profile series inspired other artists across many different media. Dr. Dwight Andrews is a unique scholar in the arts community as a composer, musician, educator, and minister. He is the senior pastor at First Congregational Church UCC located in downtown Atlanta, where he serves his congregation, preaches on Sunday mornings, and spearheads a music ministry second to none.  He is a superb jazz saxophonist and flute player.  O’Meally is the Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, where he served on the faculty for 30 years.  Dr. O’Meally is the founder and former director of Columbia’s Center for Jazz Studies and the co-curator of the High Museum’s exhibition Something Over Something Else: Romare Bearden’s Profile Series, which closes February 2.

1. BACKGROUND: HOW DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AT IT? I began baking as a child with my mother and truly enjoyed the taste and smell of sweets. It was from those memories that I sparked an interest in baking and began teaching myself how to bake cookies and cakes. This is my second career, as I retired from the state of California in 2017. Baking has truly always been a passion of mine. I would say in total I have been baking for about 40 years.   2. MY FAVORITE THING IS YOUR BOURBON PECAN COOKIES. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO MAKE AND WHY? My favorite dessert to make is my Carrot Cake. This is one of my favorites because it is an old recipe that was passed down to my father and then to me. If there happens to be any cream cheese frosting left, I can lick the bowl! 3. DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIALTIES OR Ty Myrick Photography

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES? All of my desserts are gourmet—cookies, cakes, pies, bread puddings, etc. I truly enjoy pairing my desserts with a variety of alcohols; it just takes the flavor to another level. VIRGIL ABLOH: FIGURES OF SPEECH CHICAGO DESIGNER IS SHOWCASED AT THE HIGH THROUGH MARCH 8

Virgil Abloh. Photo by Katrina Wittkamp.

VIRGIL ABLOH’S INSTAGRAM PAGE IS A GALLERY WALK ALL ON ITS OWN. He’s the modern artist’s modern artist. The designer has varied interests, having trained for architecture and made a name for himself by designing clothes and selling “Supreme” t-shirts. Collaborations with corporations from Nike to IKEA and then working with Kanye have made Abloh a household name or at least a wunderkind of the art world.  Abloh’s first museum exhibition, now at the High, is eclectic. There are conceptual pieces alongside racks of fashion. At the risk of sounding cliche, this is a show that you must immerse yourself in to understand and even then there’s lots of room for interpretation. “Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech” is culture. Go see it before it leaves Atlanta in May. --ESM FACTS ABOUT THE EXHIBITION “Figures of Speech” is the first museum exhibition devoted to the ARTICLE ERIKKA SEARLES MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE MUSEUM

Milan Ming CASCADE AREA'S PHENOM IS A TRACK STAR AT A SCHOOL WITHOUT A TRACK! ARTICLE RENEE TURNER

“Finding a balance between track, school, and family has not always been easy,” shares Ming. She found herself getting home late from practice with loads of schoolwork left to do. Practice included running the track, strength and conditioning training sometimes three to four days per week. Ming found a way to get her work done by setting aside time before practice, along with having supportive parents and teachers. She is candid about having achieved All-American status: “My journey with track has not been easy and it’s been important for me to accomplish something that has been a goal of mine for years,” Ming says. ROAD TRIP (CONTINUED)

0 1 D U N L E I T H H I S TO R I C I N N From its gravel driveway to the grand front door entrance, the Dunleith Inn was the perfect backdrop for an architectural selfie. From the Greek revival columns to the original horse stable that now serves as the main dining area of the inn, your stay will be unique, to say the least. Larger than life thresholds and baby grand pianos make for a stylish corridor into the past lives that celebrated on the grounds of the estate. I marveled at the luxe of this antebellum mansion and wandered aimlessly around the 60 acres, never bored of the vast views and beauty that served as my home while visiting Natchez, Mississippi. Editor’s Note: Call before you visit. The Inn was recently sold and may be undergoing construction and remodeling.”

02 CONCORD QUARTERS Magnolia-flanked gardens will capture you and send your mind soaring on how African Americans endured hardships amidst this phenomenal landscape. Concord Quarters is an 1820’s original slave quarters and is what remains of beautiful Concord, the first mansion built in Natchez, circa 1789. Ironically, now this cultural institution serves as a swanky and soulful celebration of mankind, where bed and breakfast guests can revel in nature’s beauty. Owners Gregory and Deborah Cosey will leave you thrilled and dangling on their every word with their enormous sense of history, dignity and pursuit to educate all visitors about the richness of Natchez. 03 SUNNYSIDE A field day of interior design will certainly brighten your spirits upon arriving at Sunnyside. Furthermore, there is truly something sweet about this cottage. Owner Colleen Wilkins makes some of the most delicate and delectable desserts known to man, daily. A plethora of treats paired with unique spirits will have your heart determined never to depart its stay. Avid readers step to the front of the line as this locale is the largest public library in Natchez. On a cozy Christmas fireside snuggle or a spring day on the Veranda, you can read and enjoy the naturalistic views that make this a perfect getaway. SunnysideNatchez.com

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME

ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

wood to your liking.

Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.

Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!

Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.

Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.

Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
