All at once, homes are physical spaces, concepts, cities, feelings, qualities, property, and people. All over the city, the concept of ‘home’ is on display: gorgeous, towering houses with impeccable views; residents walking, running, and riding mountain trails; local businesses making meaningful relationships with customers; college students gathering for a meal; and so on. Denver, home to many, is malleable enough to not only meet many different require-

ments to be considered ‘home’ but also exceptional enough to continuously be a destination folks from all over the world actively seek out. Being afforded the opportunity to call Denver ‘home’ in any capacity is an incredible stroke of good fortune. It is unquestionably worth devoting a magazine issue to. But part of measuring the true value of a home requires a bit of discomfort on everyone’s part, including, maybe even especially, us here at the magazine.

in Denver is to also acknowledge how undeniably fortunate, for both reasons in and out of any one person’s control, so many of us are to have roofs, doors, walls, electricity, or any aspect of a ‘home’ at all. If this issue resonates in any way, I hope it is due to the hard work from our writers and photographers and because we can all have a better understanding of the value of the home. Enjoy the March issue.

It Is All A Dream CHEF MAX MACKISSOCK'S FRENCH BISTRO, MORIN
ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY | PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY + CO.
WHAT DOES A CHEF’S DREAM RESTAURANT LOOK LIKE? Well, an awful lot like Morin. Morin, the finesse-driven, beverage-forward French bistro that took over the Wazee Supper Club in late 2018, is chef Max MacKissock’s dream. And considering MacKissock, of Bar Dough, The Squeaky Bean, Señor Bear, and somehow even more amazing eateries, is a Denver diner’s dream chef, that’s saying something. “It’s definitely been the hardest restaurant I’ve ever done in a lot of ways,” he says. “But it’s also been the most rewarding. I feel like we’re at a point now where we have a really good staff, and everybody loves it.” The dream kicked into high gear seven years ago when MacKissock got a chef’s tour of Paris and fell in love with the city’s bistronomy restaurants. He appreciated the innovative, sophisticated food (not to mention the natural wines and beautifully balanced cocktails) served in a fairly casual setting. That mix of relaxed refinement seemed like it would fit perfectly into laid-back Denver. “I saw a lot of things that were super inspiring and I wanted to do something like that [in Denver],” he says. “It’s accessible while still being challenging.” The challenge is that dishes like foie gras terrine, boeuf chateaubriand, and reimagined Mont Blanc with carrot buttercream and caramelized pastry take major technique to pull off, and it probably doesn’t make things easier that the menu is a constantly evolving target. The dishes change seasonally, nightly, on a whim. This added challenge means that all of 24

“Opening up the floor plan beautifully expanded the home’s space and light," says Iverson. "It allows you to experience its unique design elements from multiple vantage points."
STRIKING THE PERFECT BALANCE OF LUXURY STYLE, BUDGET, AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN ISN’T AN EASY FEAT WHEN IT COMES TO HOME RENOVATION. But for one young family seeking to revamp their one-story 1950s ranch home in Denver’s Southern Hills neighborhood, Laura Iverson, principal designer and CEO of Laura Iverson Design, was able to achieve this remodel trifecta. Finding family-friendly, modern and creative design solutions to the poor circulation and lighting caused by the dated floor plan of the home was the main goal for this remodel. “The homeowners initially explored vaulting their ceilings into the attic space,” says Iverson. “But this option would have been very expensive and would not have added any value to the home. I proposed an alternative design solution that would achieve the goal of making the space feel larger and more modern and still allow for a healthy design budget.” Starting by evaluating the architecture of the home, Iverson opened up the floor plan by removing all the doorways in and out of the home’s public spaces, removing headers, and widening the openings between each room—all of which worked seamlessly within the existing structure. Redesigning all of the windows and doors and removing mullions allowed for much more natural light to come

into the home, as well as provided opportunities for a more efficient lighting plan. An unexpected redesign of the home’s existing sunroom added even more airiness and function to the main living area. Heating this space and adding home entertainment and a lighting plan—along with installing a sliding glass door for accessibility from both the kitchen and family room—helped create a new 500 square feet of usable, extremely versatile space perfect for both the kids’ daytime play and evenings of entertaining for the parents. The sunroom wasn’t the only space made more functional with this new, more efficient floor plan. The new design also allowed for a mudroom space off the garage, a home office in the kitchen, and the major transformation of a hall bathroom and closet into a private

“Opening up the floor plan beautifully expanded the home’s space and light," says Iverson. "It allows you to experience its unique design elements from multiple vantage points." Courier starts by taking a hundred or so photos of any given area, closing in on details, and savoring each moment of the environment. “When I’m at a scene, I take notes and I write down what day it is, the year, the time, what it sounds like, what the air feels like, is there wind, is it warm?” She immerses herself into the painting before any paint has even been squeezed out of the tube. Halfway through the process, she lets go of the photos and embodies the feeling — it’s not what she sees, but what she feels. She wants viewers to experience the feelings she has and admire the light she’s captured, not necessarily know the origins of the painting. Beyond her fierce dedication to painting and running the gallery, Courier shines as a glowing example of a woman boldly traversing the unknown to do what sets her heart on fire. It would seem as though Courier and Colorado coalesced to ignite more possibility for her future. Her work has recently been featured on wine bottles and her famous water scene blue and green hues have found their way into signature Charvin acrylic set with Jerry’s Artarama. Denver continues to inspire Courier with easy access to breathtaking scenery, endless musical talent, and hidden gems that she seems to have a knack for finding. And while a paintbrush will likely find her wherever she goes, Courier knows Denver is the home for all her hopes and dreams to continue coming true.

BRINGING THE PARTY TO YOU The Greers putting their arcade room to good use.
INTERESTED IN AN ARCADE ROOM? MILE HIGH ARCADE HAS YOU COVERED
TO RELIVE CHILDHOOD, TO EMBRACE NOSTALGIA, CAN BE A DANGEROUS DANCE. Recollections of the past get warped, expectations for the future become heightened beyond reality. Thankfully, having a home arcade room doesn't have to be a mutually inclusive experience with such things. For Grover Greer, having an arcade room in his basement – equipped with pinball machines, mounted televisions, and a fully stocked bar – was less about trying to recreate memories and more about creating a space for him and his family to get more joy out of their home. “We’ve always just wanted an arcade room,” says Greer. “We love pinball, we love video games, all that stuff. We can’t afford a Dave & Buster’s, so we thought we’d do this. Pinball’s always been something I’ve wanted and thought it was really cool.” After searching for the company that would best help him achieve his goals, his wife discovered Mile High Arcade, a local video game service equipped to meet the needs of any home arcade room, special event, or local pub. “We have a teenage son; the other night they had all their friends over playing pinball and video games and stuff like that and we were watching basketball games on the televisions down there," says Greer. "It’s nice to have that in your house." At this time, Mile High Arcade does not offer actual time travel. Thankfully, their products don't have to. March 2020 | Cherry Creek Lifestyle
