While my fellow magazine editors splash out their trends for 2020 in their January issues, may I jump on the media bandwagon and toss out an idea? I am going to try to push for more balance in the new year.

Yes, I’ll add crunches and yoga. But, I won’t cut my consumption of buttery croissants from Evergreen Butcher + Bakery in my neighborhood. I want to increase the time I spend on community-building projects at my church, but I won’t give up evenings watching The Crown with my husband, parked on the sofa for hours.  Is that wrong? SGC: YOU WORK WITH ACCIDENT VICTIMS,

AND

THOSE WITH PHYSICAL DEFORMITIES – CHARTING A PLAN FOR THEIR RECONSTRUCTIVE HEALING AND RECOVERY. MG: I am really advancing in the rejuvenative space and using the patient’s own tissue and processing their  own fat into different sized particles while preserving the regenerative cells, as well as using their own platelet-rich plasma (from their blood) which is rich in growth factors.  I am using these in a wide variety of areas including degenerative arthritis, in skin conditions previously with poor treatment options, in hair growth, and even in “finishing” breast reconstruction.  SGC: DO YOU GET ANY DOWNTIME? MG: I really strive to create a healthy work-life balance.  My weekends are almost always spent with family.  While my wife does most of the cooking in the house, I am the breakfast guy and on weekends.  I often make crepes, French toast or apple cinnamon puff pancakes.    My go-to recipe, however, is Cajun barbecue shrimp which I learned and continue to modify from my undergraduate time in New Orleans at Tulane University.  TheGraivierCenter.com/ 20

LOCAL’S CHOICE

MUSIC T H AT S PE A KS I COULDN’T JUST PICK 10 SONGS RELEASED LAST YEAR THAT SPOKE TO ME, BUT INSTEAD, I HAVE TO TAKE YOU THERE AND SHOW YOU MY FAVORITE ALBUMS AND SINGLES RELEASED IN 2019, ALONG WITH FIVE SONGS THAT I’VE REALLY BEEN FEELING THIS PAST YEAR. I hope you enjoy these rad songs and I encourage you to make your own list and share with #LifestyleNYE!  BEST ALBUMS RELEASED IN 2019 MISS UNIVERSE - NILUFER YANYA Best Song: “In Your Head”  Second Best Song: “The Unordained”  Genre: Indie pop/rock If you love pop music but you think it’s too saturated synths and trap beats, check out this awesome guitar-driven album. It’s a relatable ode to youth that transcends age and will make you want to stomp around and headbang! I strongly recommend listening to the album in its entirety because it’s got some great preludes, but if that’s not your thing, at the very least, listen to “In Your Head” and thank me later. WALK THROUGH FIRE - YOLA Best Song: “Still Gone” Second Best Song: “Faraway Look” Genre: Singer-Songwriter This is a super passionate album that’s bound to make even the biggest top 40s stan cripple in the wake of Yola’s booming voice. Walk Through Fire is a truly beautiful album that not only has great production value but amazing lyrical content. It’s hoppy and has a great vibe that takes you through the musical stylings of past decades but is also rooted in contemporary production, instrumentation and lyrics.

My Most P l ay e d S o n g s of 2019 1. “Baby” - Donnie & Joe Emerson 2. “Season 2 Episode 3” - Glass Animals

TURN OFF THE LIGHTS - KIM PETRAS Best Song: “Close Your Eyes”

3. “One Way Trigger” - The Strokes

Second Best Song: “i don’t wanna die…”

4. “King Of The Dudes” - Sunflower Bean

Genre: Electro-Pop

5. “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel” - Tavares

For those of you who are more electronically inclined, Kim Petras offers up an experimental and infectious pop album that even makes the faintest of hearts consider switching to the dark side. Originally released as a Halloween EP last year, Petras completed the album this year and released it as a full-length LP. The album is fast-paced, spooky, glamorous and fun to listen to when dubbing over Gucci fashion shows. It’s a really great listen and even has Elvira, Mistress of the Dark featured on a song, so how could you not? KING OF THE DUDES- SUNFLOWER BEAN Best Song: “The Big One” Second Best Song: “Fear City” Genre: Rock By far the absolute best album I’ve heard all year. It encompasses everything I love about music; David Bowie, gritty guitars, a female vocalist/lyricist and infectious melodies that hasten your heartbeat and step. I saw them live in March and joined a mosh pit for the first time in my life, got slapped around a little bit and STILL love this album. Sunflower Bean is a band to watch and I promise you that within seconds of listening to King Of The Dudes you will ditch your Patagonia pullover for a leather jacket.  VENTURA - ANDERSON .PAAK Best Song: “Come Home” Second Best Song: “Make It Better (feat. Smokey Robinson)” Genre: Neo-Soul A very classic neo-soul album, Venture is an emotional album filled with killer features and beats that make you want to manifest destiny. This solid album has incredible instrumentation that mixes basic percussion with beautiful synths that when met with Anderson .Paak’s unique voice create a squall of lovingly heartbreaking tunes. This is a great album to put on during a dinner party or play in your car as you decompress.    5 BEST SINGLES RELEASED IN 2019 1. “Patience” - Tame Impala 2. “Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You) - Bombay Bicycle Club 3. “Ode to Artifice” - Samia 4. “Venom” - Little Simz 5. “6’s to 9’s” - Rationale  January 2020 | Johns Creek Lifestyle

“WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TEACH AND REINFORCE LEADERSHIP

IDEALS

TO

YOUNG

CHILDREN?” This was the main question our fellow SLJC ambassadors pondered as we began to plan a three-hour leadership seminar for the third to fifth grade Ocee Elementary

Student

Leaders.

Student Leadership Johns Creek (SLJC), is a highly selective twoyear program centered on training high-achieving high school students

essential

leadership

skills. We are currently juniors at Chattahoochee High School. Being the primary leaders for the seminar, we were in charge of planning and supervising the event.  Our passion for working with young children and creating a positive impact in our community is what led us to take on the initiative to organize and direct the program. Along with our fellow SLJC ambassadors;

Sneha

Tallam,

Gayatri

Kumar, Niyomi Shah, Melissa Liu, Emily Cory, Medhini Anand, Samay Shah, Aditi Mohan, and Carly Yin; we brainstormed a variety of activities, with each one revolving around the five qualities of an effective leader: trustworthiness, analytical problem solver, diligent listener, articulate communicator, and influential team member. We even introduced the kids to the essentials of public impromptu speaking. The children were put into random groups and rotated between stations. Each station consisted of an activity that was centered around a quality of leadership. Teamwork was taught by challenging students to untie themselves from a human knot. CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

“Our passion for working with young children and creating a positive impact in our community is what led us to take on the initiative to organize and direct the program.” Communication was observed through a game of telephone. Trust within a team was practiced as students went through a blindfold course. The kids got to practice public and impromptu speaking. Gavin Adams (3rd grade) said, “My favorite part was presenting in front of everyone” while Peyton Small (4th grade) learned that, “Whenever you are going to talk in public, you should take deep breaths.” The kids discussed methods for problem-solving by coming up with solutions to a list of scenarios. Lastly, the kids learned to listen through a dynamic group activity. We were very honored to create this event and touched by the children’s enthusiasm. We would like to thank Ocee School Counselor, Ms. Renee Corley, for helping us coordinate the event. Ms. Sanders, the director of SLJC, our dedicated SLJC ambassadors, and finally, the families of the children for encouraging their kids to expand their horizons and become the future leaders of the next generation. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Peering into Lapeer

TRYING TO EAT HEALTHY CAN BE A REAL CHALLENGE WHEN DINING OUT, BUT WE FOUND IT EASY AT THE NEW ALPHARETTA SEAFOOD RESTAURANT, LAPEER. Inspired by the coast, this pretty spot creates an elevated beach feel with contemporary decor, serving fresh seafood. The menu is carefully curated  and staff will quickly accommodate any food allergies at the table. The chef prepares each dish with care,  some requiring several days’ attention  to achieve the depth of flavors he desires. The butternut squash soup simmers for more than two days, and the hot sauce fermented in-house is a 7-month process. From

the

PEI Mussels

to

the

Steelhead Trout atop root veggies, healthier options are easy to spot on the menu. None of the dishes are smothered in sauces so seafood remains the star. Find pork,  hanger steak, and pasta dishes on the menu too. In addition to an extensive wine menu, Lapeer’s bar features  100 varieties of mezcal, the smoky Mexican spirit distilled from the agave plant.  We had the pleasure of experiencing the butternut squash soup, poured table-side over fresh crab salad. Snapper was served with one of my favorite vegetables, roasted fennel. And to finish the night, the housemade sorbet - fresh lime and butternut squash sorbet atop crumbled graham crackers. It was tangy and refreshing, key lime pie without the calories.  12 North Broad Street, Alpharetta LapeerSeafoodMarket.com 688.691.9400 January 2020 | Johns Creek Lifestyle
