JANUARY 2020 PUBLISHER

Ben Malkin | Ben.Malkin@LifestylePubs.com Robin Chesler | Robin.Chesler@LifestylePubs.com

It’s a New Year! (and what are we going to do about it?) IT’S 2020 AND I STILL AM PUZZLED ABOUT WHAT TO MAKE OF IT. On a certain level I am surprised that I even made it to the third decade of the 21st century! When I was very young in the 50s, whenever I heard a plane fly over our house in the middle of the night, I was afraid the Russians were going to drop a bomb on us. Made it through! I guess “Dr. Strangelove” really was a figment of Stanley Kubrick’s, Terry Southern’s and Peter George’s overwrought imagination… or maybe it could

have happened but just didn’t. Next came the 60s and Vietnam. To go, or not to go? Rather Shakespearian. I went, because I could not fathom turning my back on my country, even though I felt we were wayward. So, I joined the U.S. Air Force, did not end up in Vietnam and luckily survived that entire disaster. The rest of the 20th century, which is “my century,” focused on raising a family and achieving as much as possible. Looking back, each new year is a blur. The surviving part involved avoiding rampant recreational drug availability and use, eating a reasonably healthy diet and getting in and out of shape. The shape thing involved

BIRD’S EYE VIEW Seasoned birders and beginners alike will enjoy good bird watching and a beautiful, easy hike at Malibu Creek State Park at the San Fernando Valley Audubon Bird Walk, Sunday, January 19, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu Creek State Park has over 8,000 acres of rolling tall grass plains, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California.” Meet at the second (lower) day-use parking lot. Entrance to the park is on the west side of Las Virgenes Road, just south of Mulholland Hwy. The entrance fee is $12 per car. SamoFund.org

ARTICLE RUTH DOVER

SAVING MARINE MAMMALS IS GOOD FOR THE EARTH AND FOR THE SOUL!

IT ALL STARTED WITH THE DREAM OF A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY LIVING IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. He wanted to save animals and he loved the water! Sam was also a smart, curious and adventurous kid with an easy smile and gregarious laugh. As Sam grew up so did his passion for making a difference and his love of life. He worked hard to create a career where his work was his play and his play was his work. Sam has been practicing marine mammal veterinary medicine for 31 years and he has built a successful international veterinary consulting practice specializing in marine mammal medicine and endoscopy/laparoscopy. He is also the founder of a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting conservation through marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, research and education to promote ocean and human health. Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute (CIMWI, pronounced “sim-wee”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded on the guiding principal of making a difference in marine ecology. CIMWI is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife affected by natural and unnatural causes as well as engaging in related research and education. Marine wildlife is a key indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem and CIMWI is dedicated to the

How To Help A Stranded Marine Mammal If you encounter a marine mammal that is sick, injured, malnourished, entangled, deceased or oiled, please follow these steps: 1. DO NOT TOUCH! Do not touch, feed, harass, cover, pour water on, coax/drag/push into the water or out of the surf zone, allow dogs near or take selfies with the animal. These are wild animals and they may bite! 2. OBSERVE ANIMAL Observe the animal from a minimum of 50 feet. Keep people and pets away from the stranded animal. Note the animal’s physical characteristics and condition.

TO SMILE OR NOT TO SMILE? Is that even a question? Apparently, it is. Earlier this year, when a fan asked Kim Kardashian about her secret for smooth skin, her answer had media outlets going bonkers: “Don’t smile.” Popular culture print and electronic periodicals were headlining this “Secret to Smooth Skin.” While the queen of reality TV was likely referring to simply appearing in photos or posing in full makeup, her response has beauty-conscious women questioning the deleterious effects of a smile.
