All You Need is Love and Art FEBRUARY IS OUR MONTH OF ART—BAKING, MAKING, COLLECTING, ADMIRING AND LEARNING. We love art because it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart, the part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to art in different ways. We like to look, taste and listen to art that makes us feel something, art that resonates with us. Through art, we learn about ourselves.

ICONIC VELVET FREEZE ICE CREAM PROMOTER DIES IN CHESTERFIELD John McGuinness, leader of the local Velvet Freeze ice cream empire for more than 30 years, recently died at age 86 at his home in Chesterfield. Although only one Velvet Freeze store remains, the creamery company once was the predominant dispenser of ice cream in the St. Louis region with 50-plus stores and 20 more in the Kansas City area. In 1986, the McGuinnesses bought the company. Prior, in the 1970s, he was an executive vice president of the Adams Dairy, which then owned Velvet Freeze. The remaining Velvet Freeze store is located at 7355 West Florissant Ave. in Jennings. That store

Now, if Valentine’s Day has never been your deal, and all the love in the air is making you kind of ill, or if you’ve just come out of “grueling relationship hell,” you still have to check out one of these films on the big screen… BIRDS OF PREY: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn – Rated R Hits Theaters February 7, 2020 You should get excited to take in this rather twisted-tale, one that only Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) herself can tell, as Gotham’s most narcissistic villain, Roman Sionis/Black Mass and his diabolic right hand dude Victor Zsasz, are about to collide with Harley, and her crew, as they come to the defense of young Cassandra, and make plans to take down quite a few of the boys hanging around! This film also stars Ewan McGregor, Chris Messina, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell But if DC characters aren’t your thing, then plan on checking out… Downhill – Rated R Hits theaters February 14, 2020 When long married couple Billie (Julie Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete (Will Ferrell) decide to head to the Alps for a family vaca with the kiddos in tow, it isn’t long before they are faced with barley escaping an avalanche, causing them to re-evaluate their lives, and how they really feel about one another… Although, if you’re totally into your very own Love Fest celebration this year, then might we suggest you head out to view a truly romantic kind of film… The Photograph - Rated PG-13 Hits Theatres February 14, 2020 The Photograph takes us into the life of Mae (Issa Rae) who has just lost her mother, famed photographer Christina Eames. Angry, hurt and reeling with questions when she finds a photograph tucked away in a safe-deposit box, Mae finds herself in search of answers about her mother’s early life, as her investigation leads her into an unexpected romance with rising journalist Michael Block (played by LaKeith Stanfield). This film also stars Courtney B. Vance and Chante Adams And regardless which movie you choose to see, Chesterfield Lifestyle Magazine hopes your February Date Night turns out to be everything you hoped for, and so much more!

FRESH, HANDMADE TREATS SWEETIE PIE'S BAKERY ON MAIN SERVES UP DELECTABLE DESSERTS
SWEETS ARE CONSIDERED BAKED INTO THE RECIPE OF MOST VALENTINE’S DAY OBSERVATIONS— AND IN THE CASE OF SWEETIE PIE’S BAKERY ON MAIN IN ST. CHARLES, IT’S ALSO A RECIPE FOR PRODUCING JOY FOR OTHERS. Sweetie Pie’s owner Lydia Allen was only 15 at the time of her first cake sale. Now at 21 years old, she and her mother, Maria Allen, offer custom cakes, cupcakes, macarons, cookies, scones, cinnamon rolls and cheesecakes at the bakery and coffee shop, which opened during November 2019. “I’ve always loved baking, and when I paired that up with my creative talents of designing and decorating special occasion cakes, I knew this was my passion,” states Lydia. “Now I offer so many wonderful sweet treats and baked goods from my storefront. I love LOVE, and Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays to create delicious treats for customers to give as gifts.” She says they offer treats for every type of Valentine: special someones, kids, teachers, friends and even galentines! Flavor lists at Sweetie Pie’s vary by food category and day, and range from rose water raspberry, strawberry champagne and wildberry lavender to raspberry lemon, triple chocolate and espresso caramel. The 2020 Valentine’s Day lineup is slated to include customized items, such as as macarons, chocolate-covered strawberries and heart-shaped cheesecakes--all designed to show fondness and kindness. “We’re so excited to share our love of all things sweet! Knowing we play a part in making someone’s Valentine’s Day special is so much fun,” Lydia admits. 22

FOR VALENTINE’S DAY TREATS THAT ARE MADE WITH LOVE, CONSIDER HEADING TO OR ORDERING FROM ONE OF THE THREE, SMALL BATCH MICRO-CREAMERY LOCATIONS OWNED BY ST. LOUIS’S OWN “FLAVOR TEMPTRESS.” Tamara Keefe, founder and CEO of Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Creamery, promises delicious options await. Tamara says her passion for ice cream all began with a hand-crank ice cream maker her mother purchased at a garage sale. Her family eventually established a Sundayice-cream-making ritual, which spread throughout their community by word-ofmouth, prompting families to flock to her home, with individuals bringing the various ingredients to make more ice cream. In 2014, she made her professional leap into ice cream entrepreneurship official. In addition to three storefronts, she now also operates an online shop that ships to customers nationwide, as well as a catering business that services weddings, parties and special events. The “naughty” part comes from alcohol-infused flavors. They also offer a dairy-free ice creams made from scratch. Tamara says she’s devoted to bringing people together by “serving up love one scoop at a time.” Her creamery concoctions also made the 2019 O List for “Sexiest Ice Cream” in Oprah magazine.

THE SKINNY ON DIAMOND DNA EARTH-MINED OR LAB-GROWN? DIAMOND EXPERTS SAETTELE JEWELERS EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE
IN ITS 73 YEARS OF EXISTENCE, SAETTELE JEWELERS HAS SEEN TRENDS COME AND GO, BUT DIAMONDS WITH DNA RANK AT THE TOP. Gary Saettele, co-owner of the business with brother Gus Jr., says lab-grown diamonds and Hearts of Fire Diamonds have been the biggest changes in the past 40 years. “Cutters used to cut diamonds for weight, because the larger they could keep that rough diamond crystal in its finished product, the more money they can get,” he says. Then, in the early 1990s, the Hearts of Fire diamond came into being. “Instead of keeping the diamond weight as heavy as possible, the cutters made it perfect,” he says. The light entering the diamond bounces off the facets and when exiting, it bursts into brilliance, creating, what Gary says, the “Wow” effect. “The Hearts on Fire diamond does that, which is why it’s the world’s most perfect diamond,” he says. The second change which happened in the last two years is labgrown diamonds. “Science and technology have now enabled man to grow a diamond that doesn’t need to be mined miles below the earth’s surface,” Gary says. And where does the DNA enter the picture? “We take what we call a diamond seed, a molecule that is harvested from a diamond and grown into a diamond crystal,” Gary says. ARTICLE LINDA JARRETT

Gary says.
As DNA determines whether a child will be tall or short, blue-eyed or brown-eyed, blonde or brunette, so this diamond DNA determines color and clarity in a diamond. Just as in earth-mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can be rare when it comes to degrees of color and clarity.
Besides the cost, other factors make lab-grown diamonds attractive to buyers. “People coming in to buy jewelry care about our future and the earth,” he says. “They believe that moving a ton of earth just to get a

wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.
Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.
