MANAGING EDITOR

Doing it ALL, since FOREVER WOMEN. This was the refrigerator magnet that stood out to me. How true. Might I add, like the old adage about Ginger Rogers dancing with Fred Astaire, ‘...in high heels and backwards’! During WWII, when all of the men were away fighting, women, coming from stale Victorian rules of staying home and tending house, to suddenly running businesses and filling the work force--there was no option, we just did it. And quite proficiently. Maybe too well as they found a way to direct us back in the home via glamourized television commercials with lovely women in pumps and pearls advertising the latest electric vacuum, or the aproned, stiffly coiffed lady baking cookies in her exciting, shiny new oven. Nowadays it seems more of a two-person work force to accommodate our lives. Women not only run our homes and businesses, but they also look great! We exercise regularly, practice yoga, dye/bleach our hair, get facials, mani/peds, steam/iron our clothes, put on makeup and try our best at healthy diets. How about adding motherhood to the balance with schooling, doctor appointments, sports and arts activities, lunches, dinners, homework...the list goes on! How do we do it? (I’m not excluding men or partners, just focusing on women here.) On top of all of this, add our state of the world, gender pay gap, ongoing systemic racism, climate issues and a pandemic! Women, we all have our challenges, and we all are in this together. We in fact need to be kind to ourselves and to encourage each other. How about rewarding ourselves a bit?

COMFORT CALLS, BUT SO DOES PROGRESS “The pandemic has been a much-needed call-toaction for the fashion industry to simplify operations to better align with consumer needs,” says Max Martinez, owner of the luxury retailer MAX. Maria Cornejo and Gabriela Hearst are two brands that MAX sells who are leaders when it comes to manufacturing locally, limiting output, and collaborating with female artisans around the world to elevate social impact. Haven focuses on carrying smaller independent brands with sustainability as a core value, from an exclusive denim line that reduces material waste to vintage furniture. Madison Moorhead, a personal stylist in town, says she is continuing to focus on “consignment and vintage shopping for my clients, because buying second-hand makes fashion much more accessible to everyone, regardless of economic standing.” Addressing under-represented communities is also a big topic in the biz. Choi says that lately she has worked with many African American models on photoshoots for small boutique campaigns to national ones that are making a great attempt at shifting their colorblindness. Laurel Tate, co-owner of Two Sole Sisters says, “we feel fortunate to be able to listen to our BIPOC colleagues, team members, and clients and then amplify their voices, so that the fashion industry progresses alongside other industries. We see this time as an opportunity for growth and inclusiveness.”

Being a woman in the publishing world means that I sometimes tap into the softer side of the stories I hear. As a writer, this means I can help amplify others' voices, especially the quieter ones, to make sure they are heard, which is everything. Photo by Human Arts Photography

There are pros and cons to being in an industry consisting mostly of women. Like other female-dominated industries, the pay tends to be lower, but I find that the freedom, flexibility, camaraderie, and support help make up for the whole not-ever-getting-rich thing. When women come together, we can create beautiful things in beautiful ways, and I love to be a part of that process.

PHOTOGRAPHER

Being a woman and a writer, I tell narratives through the heart via language that aims to bring us all closer together, so that the voices of our communities are uplifted rather than overlooked. Storytelling is an honor and a responsibility, and during these historical times, telling the truth and listening to one another has never been more important. I strive to act with empathy when covering a range of subjects while also observing without judgment, questioning when necessary, and always digging a little deeper to expand the conversation towards progress.

Being in commercial photography, which is a mostly male-dominated industry has had its own set of challenges; however, having had the opportunity to regularly contribute to the Lifestyle Publications has allowed me to meet and see first-hand some really amazing, talented, and successful female entrepreneurs, designers and artists. Having taken a step back to reflect on this, I can say those experiences have been incredibly inspiring and played a role in the growth of my career and business.

KELLI HARGROVE, WRITER It is a great responsibility and a wonderful privilege to get to share in the stories of my community and to use my words to amplify the many inspiring voices that surround me.

I feel so incredibly lucky to be a female in the publishing world today, especially when I get to uplift and tell other women's stories. The publishing industry, especially the community created here, has allowed me to make so many incredible connections with other artists, creatives and business women. It has given me opportunities and created an environment to learn, create, collaborate and grow with other women in the community, and I hope to inspire other women and artists to join in this industry.

CHANTEL ELLERINGTON,

ALEXANDRÉ HOOSON,

Publishing is a space that promotes the explosive collision of thinkers, creatives, intellects and entrepreneurs. For a writer, publishing means the opportunity and privilege to exist at the intellectual intersection of these identities. But what is unique and empowering about this sphere is not only being afforded the opportunity to simply record these experiences, but to be celebrated for contributing the unique intersectionality of your own identity to these narratives, as a women and much more. This is both empowering and critical for feminine-identifying people because when the world places inherent value in your words, what follows is the world placing inherent value in your self.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

My love and passion for print have been on fire since I was a kid sitting in the magazine aisle of the grocery store. Being a woman in this field is a true gift. I have the opportunity to bring grace, kindness, and empathy to everything I contribute to. I am thankful to be part of a publication that celebrates our community connecting individuals and companies together for the greater good.

Working beside incredible women photographers, writers, designers and creators is something that I have come to cherish most in my career. I love looking up each day and seeing the women that give my work meaning and inspire me to keep creating. This community is built by some BA women, and I will keep building and supporting the women that have created that framework.

JOJO WATTS: WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY BEEN AS AN ENTREPRENEUR? JP: I love working for myself. I feel happy when I’m working and I am fortunate that I get to choose the products, travel around the world, and foster relationships with a diverse range of people that I meet. JW: WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT BEING IN PRODUCTION? JP: The best part of my job is that I get to be a part of the whole process. Each job, client, and ad agencies are all different. As a producer, I have to be aware of both the business and creative side. The job takes me to different locations all the time. I could be in Seattle one minute then off to Hong Kong the next. Samantha Joseph Flip The Script Walking into a room, Samantha Joseph causes many heads to turn. The model from Haiti is beautiful and striking and is now using her experience as a Black model to create a magazine, NWÀ, with a full cast of Black models for its launch issue. “We have to stop normalizing that all Black models look alike. That’s why I created NWÀ with only Black models for the first issue. It is my way of showing people that we are all different,” Joseph says. The Haitian model took her negative experiences with modeling agencies and used that drive to promote other Black models, photographers, stylists, and creatives. After being told that she looked like other Black models already signed to agencies, Joseph filled the beautiful pages of NWÀ Magazine with Black models of all descriptions to show the diversity within that specific group. Growing up, the publisher was destined for a future in the fashion industry, first exploring being a designer and then a fashion merchandiser. But modeling was her calling, and now she gets to elevate, promote and support her fellow Black models in a sometimes unkind industry.

JW: WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? BH: As a female business owner and mama to twin daughters, I’m extremely passionate about supporting women and mothers every way possible. I realized that so much of my own success is tied directly to the opportunities and relationships that were given to me. The community of women that are encouraging and supportive inspired me to start a new Instagram series called #herstory, which highlights strong, professional women. Sometimes all it takes is one introduction, and if I can do that for someone else, it’s amazing! JW: WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU HAD? BH: When I first started the agency, I was a new mom, first-time homeowner, and a woman opening a shop in a male-dominated industry. I was scared and intimidated. I allowed the voices of doubt to become my narrative and question my ability. Having my wife, family, and girlfriends to build me up with encouragement, I dug deep and pushed on. With three years of success, a healthy roster of clients, and a wonderful contract team, I’m feeling my stride and confidence. JW:WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? BH: In addition to my clients, Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, Homeadvisor, The Hillman Group, Sanitas Brewing CO, Mandara CBD,and Gilde, I’m cultivating a personal side to Fadduh. I’m mentoring and public speaking about opportunities to engage women on the never-ending questions of how to balance being a wife, mom, and business owner. We all need encouragement, someone who believes in us and tells us, “yes you can.” For me, I have to trust my instincts and do the work, while also supporting my tribe in showing women a potential path to follow. There is nothing more satisfying than when I can encourage women. Fadduh will continue to support Mother House, a Boulderbased nonprofit safe haven to pregnant mothers in need.

“IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK.” We’ve read it. We’ve seen the quote on Pinterest. We’ve shared it on Instagram. But do we actually accept and believe it? Mental health is of great concern, especially during these unprecedented times. Anxiety is high while uncertainty is even higher. But one thing is for sure: your mental health is more important now than ever. Kendra Miguez, CEO and Founder of Colorado Women’s Center, is seeing so many women struggling with the current way of life. Whether it’s juggling work and kids, or whether it’s fighting depression and anxiety; it all creates a lack of stability in an already unstable world. “I think acceptance of the moment is key for mental health. We cannot look too far ahead or we will live in a state of anxiety. One step at a time is how we get to our destination,” Miguez says. “My advice to women who are struggling during these difficult times is to seek out support. Whether it’s a friend, a loved one or a therapist, it is essential to ask for help!” Miguez is no stranger to these feelings. Colorado Women’s Center would not be what it is today without her own journey of facing extreme adversity. “At one point in my life, mistakes and failure was all that I knew,” she says. Miguez left home at an early age, struggling to find herself while making her way through numerous cities: New York City, Chicago, and Denver. She was lost.

“One poor decision after another, I soon found myself alone, single and a mother,” Miguez says. “With an infant, little resources and limited support, I was faced with a steep climb. I knew if my son and I were going to survive, I had no choice but to climb. So, I set off on a solo journey with a baby in tow and one step at a time, we started our elevation.” Miguez found herself climbing higher and higher, earning two master’s degrees in psychology within four years, all while raising a child on her own. With a 4-year-old at her side, she graduated from her second graduate program. She learned to defy the stigmas that surrounded her. “This is the source and the glue that Colorado Women’s Center is built upon. Every location represents a place for

“HOUSES ARE LIVING THINGS,” OBSERVES PROJECT ARCHITECT ELIZABETH SMITH OF FANAS ARCHITECTURE. “They have to adapt to changing times and circumstances.” This philosophy was one of the overriding elements of this wonderful light and airy bungalow. “The exterior of the home reflects the timeless aesthetic of the Craftsman style, while the open, contemporary floor plan is what most people desire today.” The character and delight of this fanciful, fresh modern bungalow is a result of the collaboration of an artistic client and the artistic architects. “It’s been designed inside and out to be a creative sanctuary that inspires artistic expression while stimulating harmonious creativity.” After recently being widowed, the owner sought to move from outside city limits, eventually finding this perfect, but small, available property. She and the design team embraced the challenge as a rare opportunity and have created the peaceful sanctuary that she had yearned for in a home. The design takes into account the fabric of the neighborhood while responding to the dreams and goals of the owner. The attention to detail begins as you walk up the modern entry path—hinting at the contemporary interior. A welcoming front porch of purple and green reflect the bold artistic nature of the owner, juxtaposed against the traditional detailing of a bungalow. The entry opens to the comfortable, modern living room, which shares the multi-sided fireplace, providing two-story wall space. The abundant windows flood the open main level living spaces with natural light and provide wonderful views from all of the spaces. Wall spaces and dedicated niches for display were carefully designed to accommodate her numerous works of art. The inviting kitchen and dining are designed to bring family together and connect them to the beautiful outdoor living space, which is open and accessible from the kitchen and living room. Completing the main floor design is the master suite, which provides the ability to age-in-place. The living spaces on the main level flow together, allowing the home to live larger than its actual size. The interior finishes of the home are a variation of the exterior. Muted greens and purples are evident throughout, with darker purple accents, and even a purple sofa and chairs. Tiles and accents are glass and brushed stainless steel, lending to the light and bright feel of the space. The living room chandelier is a reclaimed turn-of-the-last-century gas fixture, which has been retrofitted to burn both gas (up lights) and LED (downlights), providing a nod to the home's ancestry. In addition to space to display her art, gardening and outdoor living were also priorities. Mixing the two, placed above the garage and adjacent to her art studio, is the roof-top garden, creating a private sanctuary (with a view). It’s the perfect combination of home and inspiration.

Destination Worthy BABETTES PIZZA & PANE IN PROSPECT

HERE’S THE THING ABOUT MAKING BAKED GOODS, ESPECIALLY EXCEPTIONAL ONES: YOU’LL ALWAYS MAKE FAST FRIENDS, NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO. So when Babettes left its tiny spot inside Denver’s the Source food hall at the end of 2018 and made the move up to Longmont’s Prospect neighborhood, they weren’t lonely for long. (Adding wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas to the mix didn’t hurt either.) “They’ve embraced it so much,” Babettes Pizza & Pane co-owner Catherine Scott says of Longmont. “We’ve been really fortunate to have people come from all over, customers driving up even from Castle Rock.” It’s no wonder—the pastries and pizzas coming out of Babettes are destination-worthy, whether you’re venturing from across the metro area or across the street. Wife and husband team Catherine and Steve Scott have been in it together since the beginning, with each contributing complementary skills to keep the business humming. Catherine is the numbers and people person, while Steve is an incredibly talented baker.

“ It’s great to support the local businesses you want to support.” “I can’t imagine doing this alone,” she says. “We both have different strengths and very different approaches to things. That’s why we’re such a good team. He’s so good with food, he can take anything and make it great. I always wanted to see him doing exactly what we’re doing here, and it’s been a lot of fun.” Moving the bakery to Longmont was an easy decision for the couple, as that’s where they’ve lived for years. Besides the easier commute, it offered them more space to add the pizzeria, and it’s a good thing— the world needs this char-bubbled, crispy-chewy, sourdough crust. While the dining room is still closed due to COVID, the pizzas, French pastries, Italian prepared meals, and well-caramelized, custardy loaves of bread are all available for takeout. “The bakery has been doing amazing through the virus,” Catherine says. “When the virus hit, a lot of people came up to visit and support us because they had the time to make the trip. It’s great to support the local businesses you want to support.”

HOMETOWN HERO (CONTINUED)

DO YOU REMEMBER A TIME WHEN SOMEONE BELIEVED IN YOU? Not just a pat on the back, but really believed that you had the power and ability to achieve anything you set your mind to? This is the motivation behind Street Business School, an organization as entrepreneurial as its mission, investing in the business education of women, and eliminating poverty. Having someone believe in you is a powerful human experience. It is one that instills confidence and empowerment often at times when you don’t see that in yourself. Street Business School (SBS) is an organization founded by Boulder native Devin Hibbard that perpetuates this critical human experience by pairing confidence development with business education in order to alleviate poverty and empower women globally. First piloted in Uganda and now expanded globally, the program offers a course for women providing key mentorship opportunities and entrepreneurial skills that teach critical business skills and empower women living in areas of extreme poverty, oftentimes with mouths to feed and homes to keep. The program focuses on teaching lessons such as bookkeeping without the skills to read or write and investment strategies for growth. Using an innovative social franchise expansion model, SBS focuses on bringing this critical education to 1 million entrepreneurs by 2027 by partnering with organizations globally to offer the program to their local communities This is Rosette’s story. A participant of SBS and living in Kampala, Uganda, Rosette flourished in the program and started her own vegetable stand. Using resources she already had in order to start small, a lesson from SBS, she used a blanket on which she sold vegetables. While her neighbors and family laughed at her and her small blanket, Rosette invested her earnings and has since been able to purchase a farm stand which she keeps fully stocked every day. The neighbors aren’t laughing anymore she reported back.

“I TELL MY CHILDREN THAT I WALKED ON MUDDY ROADS WITH MY BARE FEET WHEN I WAS LITTLE. BUT NOW THEY DO NOT HAVE TO WALK ON THE MUD BECAUSE I HAVE WORKED HARD TO LAY BRICKS FOR THEM TO WALK ON INSTEAD.” DIEP NGUYEN, OWNER OF TIFFANY’S NAILS AND SPA IN BOULDER, OFTEN TELLS HER CHILDREN THAT THEY NEED TO MIMIC THE DUCK TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS. From the surface, the duck appears calm and relaxed. But underwater, that same tranquil duck is constantly paddling against the current, working hard every day to ensure it isn’t swept down the river. It’s an analogy that Diep, aka Tyffanie, understands and values deeply. And just like the paddling feet of the duck she works to emulate, there is much more to her story—and the genesis of her salon—that exists beneath the surface. In 1984, 5-year-old Nguyen fled Vietnam with her younger sister and father. A Lieutenant with the French and U.S. armies during the Vietnam War, her father, along with his Allied comrades, were actively hunted after the fall of Saigon. “My father had no choice but to flee Vietnam and risk our lives for freedom and a better future in America,” Nguyen says. Leaving behind her mother and three of her sisters for fear of attracting attention and arrest as a large emigrating group, they boarded a small fishing boat and headed east towards the Pacific Ocean. They were what have come to be known as “boat people”—refugees in a dangerous, historic mass exodus. From starvation and dehydration to the weight of uncertainty as to when—or if—help would find them, to say the journey was harrowing would be an understatement. Nguyen’s craft was rescued by a French naval ship after 27 days at sea. Nguyen lived in a Korean refugee

camp, then a second camp in the Philippines, for two years before arriving in America. “Thinking back on our perilous journey, it gave me a new perspective on life,” she says. “I could have easily died in the Pacific Ocean, yet I am here today.” After growing up in California, Nguyen moved to Boulder and instantly fell in love with its beautiful landscape and friendly people. Having worked in her father’s nail salon for many years, she was inspired to open her own in 2004.

PARTING THOUGHTS

FORGING THE LINK BETWEEN ART AND CULTURAL ROOTS THE LATINO ARTS SCENE IN COLORADO IS AMONG THE MOST ACTIVE AND VIBRANT IN THE U.S. AND ARTISTS HAVE MUCH TO DRAW ON FROM THEIR CULTURE.

ONE OF THEIR MAIN SOURCES OF INSPIRATION IS MEXICO’S FAMED HOLIDAY OF THE DEAD DIA DE LOS MUERTOS. “My heritage is at the heart of everything I do,” says self-taught artist Angelica Jimenez. Artistically known as Xencs, she specializes in original paintings, handcrafted jewelry and customized objects. Her cultural and ancestral tradition is the foundation of her modern approach to her visual art. But it was through the guidance and support from family and friends that has enabled her to grow and flourish. “My brother Jose, who is a great artist, encouraged me by giving me art supplies for Christmas one year.” She was in her early 20's and only thought her creative side was writing and making music. “I didn’t think I had it in me to be an artist.” A few years after she started painting, she had her first solo art show, and made all day-of-the-dead-inspired artwork. From that show came opportunity. Although she’s known for her Day-of-the-Dead creations, she doesn’t limit her artistic expression to life-after-death depictions. People often limit their views to a dualistic nature, she explains, missing out on all of the colors and shades in between the black and white, life and death. One unique aspect of Xencs’ non-stop creativity: painting live at hip hop concerts, fundraisers and themed shows. “I truly enjoy painting live. I used to make music, so my inner performer doesn’t mind having people watch me create.” There's a bigger force that moves through her, guiding her, she says. “I feel like art has helped me transition into having another creative platform to tell stories.” At this time of year, she says, “I usually gather with friends and photographers to remember our loved ones through photography.” But because of the pandemic, it won’t be the same this year. “I just hope we can find a way to safely honor them together and make something happen.” Xlwing.com DAY OF THE DEAD EVENTS AND EXHIBITS—LIVE AND VIRTUAL: Museo de Las Americas: museo.org Denver Art Museum: denverartmuseum.org Denver Botanic Gardens: botanicgardens.org Longmont Museum: longmontcolorado.gov Firehouse Art Center, Longmont: firehouseart.org 100 Boulder Lifestyle | October 2020

WAKING THE DEAD Only in Mexico—where death is revered, mocked and even denied Dating back to pre-Columbian times, this ancient ritual commemorates the transitory return to earth of deceased relatives and loved ones. In 2008 UNESCO proclaimed Dia de Los Muertos a Masterpiece of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In ritual observance both religious and pagan, Mexican families mingle and share a meal with the souls of their loved ones at midnight picnics in cemeteries on the nights of November 1 and 2, known as All Souls and All Saints Day. Church bells toll calling souls to their gravesites while musicians serenade the deceased with their favorite songs. Vendors take advantage of the crowds by selling special holiday treats, lending a festive air to the occasion. Private altars called ofrendas are the most prominent feature in these celebrations. Created in homes and cemeteries, they are a blend of pagan and religious imagery. Sugar skulls, pan de muerto and photographs of the deceased are placed on the altar with samples of their favorite food, drink and mementos of their past lives. Marigolds open the doorway to the other world. Copal, or incense, placed in a chalice is used to purify the souls of the departed and ward off evil spirits. “I’m passionate about Day of the Dead,” says artist Xencs. For her, gathering the pieces for altars and artwork plays a huge part in the grieving process. Often confused with Halloween, it is much more than that. “It’s very reflective, more beautiful than sad—and it’s definitely not scary.”
