of someone’s heart and soul; the part of them we don’t necessarily see on the surface. It resonates with us and therefore, through the arts, we learn about ourselves. As you read about our local artists in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope that you too are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love and yes, in 2020, we have one more day of love to enjoy—thanks to Leap Year! In every one of our feature articles, we explore the passions of artistry. The Ridgewood Art Institute focuses on traditional American classical realism and offers classes in oils, watercolors and drawing for people of all ages and abilities. Matthew James, a 2019 graduate of Northern Highlands and founder of James Productions has been writing, directing and producing spectacular holiday performances since 2009. At Northwest Bergen County’s preeminent specialty foods shop, Olive R Twist Olive Oil Company, owners Marianne Krantz and Andrea Volter procure olive oils from around the world and balsamics from Modena, Italy. At the end of the day, it’s all about the experience and that’s what makes the real difference at Rosi's. So Northwest Bergen Lifestyle readers, while you fill your home with chocolate truffles and roses this February, remember to fill your heart too. And make a positive contribution to our community when you shop. According to independentwestand.org, did you know that for every $100 you spend at a locally owned business, $68 will stay in our community. When you shop online or at a national chain, only $43 will stay in our community. Now that’s a good reason to support our local businesses.

Rosi's Bridal Studio GET A CUSTOM LOOK THAT'S FAR FROM "CUSTOMARY"

ARTICLE KRIS PEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY JEAN TERMAN

AIDA MEJIA, OWNER OF ROSI’S BRIDAL STUDIO IN HO-HO-KUS ALWAYS LOVED TO SKETCH. Although life’s journey led her to a degree in Finance, Aida fell back to her original passion and began to hone her skills in design and fabric selection. She now collaborates with seamstress Lorraine Freeman to create custom looks for brides and their moms in addition to carrying designer lines such as Pronovias, Desiree Hartsock, and Omelie. The talented duo can also customize dresses that are in stock and personalize certain aspects of the design to suit the tastes of any client. Some clients love a particular dress but would prefer different sleeves or a different neckline. Working with Rosi’s makes these types of alterations a “seamless” process!  “We can customize any dress to fit and flatter you,” says Lorraine.  Rosi’s offers unique, individualized  service to all of their clients. “We work with one bride at a time, so she, her mom and guests get the store to themselves  and our full attention during the  appointment,” says Aida. “It’s all about the experience.” Aida enjoys working with her clients to help them find their “dream” gown. When designing for a bride or mother of the bride, she encourages them to understand and express what styles, fabrics, and designs truly speak to their individual personalities.  “I love seeing women when they put on the right dress. It’s a great feeling to just take a step back and soak in that moment!”

Northwest Bergen Lifestyle | February 2020

AIDA’S SHOPPING TIPS Don’t overwhelm yourself. Vet the bridal shops you are working with and only visit 2-3. Don’t lose your sense of what you love from too much social media or the opinions of friends or relatives. Limit the number of dresses you try on. When one speaks to you, that’s usually the one that you love. Don’t set your heart on one specific look. Keep an open mind. I have seen brides and moms come in with one thing in mind, and fall in love with a completely different look.

ARTIST’S PALETTE

ART IST IC I N S PI R AT I O N FOR ALL

CARL HOLST HAS BEEN A STUDENT FOR OVER 30 YEARS AT A LOCAL PLACE OF LEARNING THAT DOES NOT OFFER A DEGREE OR A CERTIFICATE BUT PROVIDES ITS STUDENTS WITH SKILLS, TECHNIQUE, ACHIEVEMENT AND BEAUTIFUL WORKS CREATED BY THEIR OWN HANDS.

The Ridgewood Art Institute boasts many “lifelong students”

who have dedicated their time and talent to help build and preserve a unique non-profit organization while honing their own skills each week. The notable yet understated structure is a masterpiece itself which stands out--yet blends in--to the landscape at 12 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood.

As President of the organization, Carl’s hope is that the

Institute continues its mission as a place celebrating art and its makers. “Our biggest goal is for people to realize that we are here,” he says. As an art major and music minor, Carl’s career path veered toward the insurance industry; but he found the Institute in 1990 and has been there to satisfy his artistic endeavors ever since. Elena Taylor, Public Relations Director adds, “most of our students have been here for a very long time.” Elena herself has been a student for over 20 years.

EXPLORING ART AT RIDGEWOOD'S ART INSTITUTE

The group was founded in 1935 and bought an 1861-era barn on Glen Avenue to be their home in 1947,” says Rebecca Leer, a member, student and instructor at the Institute. “The community rallied around the idea and helped to raise money for the cause, which attracted renowned artists like Arthur Maynard.

The Prismatic Palette clarifies several strings of colors into even steps, with the lightest values descending to the darkest tones. It is a much-used resource for artists to interpret outdoor light and to see the light progressions in the form of color temperatures and value. As any art student will tell you, studios with north-facing windows are coveted for providing a constant silvery glow without direct sunlight moving across the room. have control over contrasts and the subtle color changes within a painting. “As far as we know, The Ridgewood Art Institute is the only known studio in the area where this atmosphere is available for our artists,” says Elena. The Institute focuses on traditional American classical realism and offers classes in oils, watercolors, and drawing for people of all ages and abilities. “We teach at every level, from beginning students to art majors who have studied art and painted for years. Our classes are ongoing throughout the year and students may join at any time,” says Elena. “Ninety-year-olds work alongside nine-year-olds. It’s a beautiful give-and-take experience with everyone in the community sharing information and inspiration.” Ed Galenkamp has been taking lessons over ten years Rebecca Leer, Instructor with Paul Bentzel

with a particular interest in watercolor painting. “Students come here from as far away as New Brunswick, Goshen, and New York City,” he says. “This facility is very unique to the country. Several people I know have moved away and cannot find any other place like this to paint.” The non-profit covers operating costs through membership fees which are $80 per year for an individual or $600 for a lifetime membership.  Instructors are paid directly by their students through class fees and are expected to donate two paintings and direct one art show per year. The rest of the organization, along with its board, are volunteers. The month of February features the Institute’s 40th Annual Juried Art Show, which is open to all artists working in a representational or traditional manner in the New York metro area. All works will be judged on an equal basis by a qualified jury. The 68th Annual Sponsors Show is a unique opportunity to pick up an amazing piece of art for only $275.

All art sale proceeds benefit Ridgewood Art Institute

Participants purchase a limited $275 sponsorship. On the last night of the show, as their names are drawn, sponsors are able to select their favorite painting to take home. The Ridgewood Art Institute gives back to the community through its Young People’s Scholarship exhibit when works by aspiring members and non-members are hung. Winners are selected as beneficiaries for the Institute’s scholarship fund, which spans from a Grand Scholarship for high school seniors heading into a collegiate arts program to free lessons for non-member winners. Visitors are welcome at any time that classes are running, and there is no charge for admission. Alena advises calling before visiting to confirm hours. The Institute accepts donations, and all of their sales proceeds benefit the organization. “We need that kind of devotion from people,” says Rebecca. “It’s a very special place.” RidgewoodArtInstitute.org February 2020 | Northwest Bergen Lifestyle

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

“PLACES, EVERYONE!” EVERYONE HAS A PLACE IN A JAMES PRODUCTION!

MATTHEW JAMES LIKES A SPECTACLE. In 2009 when he was 10, he began creating his own by entertaining family and friends during the holidays at his home in Upper Saddle River. Years went on and the production progressed; culminating in “Fun and Fame,” the December 2019 show at the Cavallini Middle School. “The show’s format is concert-like,” says Matthew. “I like to produce a series of different performances with an overarching theme.” December’s show was an artist tribute, featuring performers celebrating celebrities like Dolly Parton, Elvis, Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. The opportunity to perform at the school auditorium allowed Matthew to build upon his idea of a truly immersive show, where the audience sits within the performance. Through the use of platforms located around the venue, performers have the ability to “pop-up” throughout the space. Matt’s shows have grown over the years to ensembles of over 38 cast and crew ranging in age from 7 to 65. Backstage logistics demand make-up, costume

and hair changes that must be done in minutes, and Matt gamely organizes the process with color-coded spreadsheets. He creates unique and original parody videos including his own version of “Home Alone” for the audience to enjoy in between scenes. 28

Matt loves working with kids and adults of all ages and views performance as an activity where everyone feels like they belong. “I love creating a team of professionally-minded volunteers,” he says. “They realize the importance of their job as part of the team, and show up to do it.” The cost of such a production runs high and ticket sales are a big part of recouping expenditures. The challenge is ever looming to break even by maintaining the delicate balance of business versus creativity. Fundraising and sponsorship opportunities may soon become a part of future productions.

Matthew and his family

Everyone needs hair and makeup A 2019 graduate of Northern Highlands, Matt currently attends NYU. He has no formal music, dance or acting experience aside from two years of piano lessons. “Seeing this all come alive is amazing,” he says. “I love the process of putting together music and dance and seeing people enjoying what I create. Watching kids and adults immersed in the process creates a purpose for me and many others.” When asked if this will continue to be a yearly event, Matt replies, “I keep a list of problems that come up throughout the rehearsals and production of the show. If I can solve them, there’s no reason not to do it again next year!” JamesProductions.org
