Staying cool and hydrated during the Valley’s summer heat is a challenge for homeless and at-risk families. Platinum Living Realty initiated a water drive to collect bottled water for those in need. Co-owners Jay and Michelle Macklin had the goal of collecting 2,000 bottles of water, but support from staff, agents, and partners helped them to collect more than 10,000. GIVING BACK

Breast Cancer Awareness Month LOCAL RESIDENT TRACEY HEIN SHARES HER HEROIC STORY ARTICLE STACI HAUK PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS PHOTOGRAPHY

AS A MOTHER OF TWO YOUNG BOYS AND DEVOTED WIFE, TRACEY HEIN SAID BREAST CANCER WAS THE FURTHEST THING FROM HER MIND. No family history coupled with a healthy lifestyle meant Hein never expected to be hit with the news that she was afflicted with the disease. “I had a clear mammogram in June of 2017. I visited the gynecologist in August because I was having sweats and noticed breast hardening and tenderness. The doctor recommended I get another mammogram to ease my mind. After further testing, I was told I was the 1 in 8 who will be diagnosed with breast cancer.” Tracey went in for a double mastectomy that September, and upon waking, was told the

cancer had spread to multiple lymph nodes and the tumor was large and aggressively spreading, placing her at stage 3. The decision to undergo different treatments is a personal choice. “For me, it was a double mastectomy with expanders, which would include reconstruction after treatment.” Along with this agonizing process, was the addition of chemotherapy. By Tracey’s second treatment, she began to lose her hair. “Through ‘Don’t Be a Chump, Check for a Lump,’ I had purchased a wig. Even with my preparation for ‘shave day,’ this was the first time I cried. Now everyone could tell I was undergoing treatment...mainly my children.”  Tracey’s two boys, Gabriel (then in the second grade) and Ethan (then in kindergarten), were too young to truly understand what was going on. Tracey is sad  about missing so much of that year with them but is equally grateful for the support of her community. “Gabriel obsessively studied germs and diseases; I think this was his way of coping. I found several books written for children on losing hair and cancer. Neither of my boys liked my wig, so I found a plethora of hats on Amazon, and friends made me crocheted caps. My parents dropped everything and drove their RV from Florida to park in our backyard for months. My husband, Denis,  was allowed to work from home thanks to his employer. My friends were my therapy, and I made so many new friends who had gone through breast cancer treatment.” Currently, Tracey is cancer-free, but notes that aftercare is crucial. “I take medication daily, monthly, I get a shot in the stomach, and I have regular scans and bloodwork. You often hear that someone is battling cancer or lost their cancer battle. I understand the good intention behind the phrase, but it isn’t necessarily true. My treatment worked for me, but I had no control over it working. This was a battle over my life, of which I had no control of the outcome.” SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER

Grove, Luci’s at the Orchard and Luci’s Healthy Marketplace have an eclectic ambiance focused on the community they are a part of.   The branding of Luci’s Concepts began early-on when there was a fire at the original Luci’s Healthy Marketplace. “We rebuilt Luci’s, and it was a very pivotal point for branding. We were heavy on supplements and groceries at first, and then we reflected on what worked and what didn’t and changed the module,” Lucia says.  Groceries and made-to-order food is what the neighborhood called for, and because of the overwhelming support given during the fire, Lucia and Ken were open to suggestions. They also added a partner named Jerry, who refined operational aspects of the kitchen. Other Luci’s locations followed, each with a look and feel customized to its community. “Our Orchard location has an agricultural aspect. I remember standing on that property with my newborn youngest child, and it felt like the ground wrapped its roots around me, much like a field of dreams feeling. Now seeing it thrive, it has done so much for our community. We create moments that count every day on our properties from weddings to birthdays; it’s about family togetherness,” Lucia shares. Lucia says it is essential for their brand to focus on where each of their restaurants will enrich the community and truly belong to its members as their special spot.  “When the Grove concept began, we looked at an old church, and I immediately felt good about it. I saw people walking nearby and on bikes; it was just a beautiful site, and the community was so excited about us. Our team worked hard on every detail from the flow to the kitchen, and I am proud to say that it is now a flagstone for future Luci’s, as well as the first we built from the ground up.” Other locations were carefully renovated classic Phoenix homes where Lucia and Ken sought to retain their original charm, complementing with new elements like mosaic tilework, handmade glass

when one of her four children was only six months old. While undergoing treatment, Ken mentioned the concept for Luci’s. “To Ken, it was a metaphor for hope; Luci’s was built on the idea of making each moment count. Anything we

in 2009, out of tragedy. Lucia was diagnosed with breast cancer

to be creative or enjoy a happy time or even to develop and nurture relationships; that was a key motivator.”

Lucia shares that Ken was very enthusiastic about the project, trying to overcome his frustration over the disease that had stricken his wife as a young, healthy mom. He was adamant to refocus his attention on health awareness, and Luci’s branding is centered around that ideal—good ingredients and a marketplace for wellness and personal care. Ken had a food distribution background and an entrepreneurial spirit. He and Lucia have since expanded their team to create an inner circle of visionaries such as their director of operations, Michelle, who has added clarity and order.

Hear that howl?

The Talking Stick Entertainment District is making a splash with the grand opening of Great Wolf Lodge. Great Wolf Resorts, Inc. is North America’s largest family of indoor waterpark resorts. “Great Wolf Lodge Arizona will provide families in the Southwest with a unique and funfilled resort experience, from the waterpark to our Adventure Park and wide array of dining options,” says general manager Brian Johnson.  “Scottsdale is the ideal first location in the region for Great Wolf Resorts, our 84-degree waterpark will bring joy to families year-round, no matter the desert weather! Whereas some resorts may see families looking to escape the cold, Great Wolf Lodge Arizona will be the place to beat the heat.” More than two acres of action-packed family fun awaits with a visit to The Lodge. Activities include the following: TALKING STICK TREEHOUSE: Great Wolf Lodge’s signature, multi-level water play structure features  suspension bridges, slides, spray stations and other water elements. Atop of Talking Stick Treehouse sits a massive, 1,000-gallon tipping bucket that pours out every three-four minutes, to the glee of the guests waiting below. Attached to the play structure are five water slides, two that originate from the top of the structure for more adventurous young ones and three at a lower-level for more of the toddler set.  WOLF TAIL:  This is a thrill-seekers delight. Guests step into a launch pod and listen to the rhythmic sound of a heartbeat as they wait for the floor to drop out from underneath, hurling them into a nearly vertical, 20-foot free fall, followed immediately by a 360-degree, high-speed loop.  HOWLIN’ TORNADO: An exhilarating family raft-ride sends guests down a steep 15-foot drop and into a massive funnel. It’s called the tornado because the raft twists and swirls as it careens up one side of the giant funnel to the next, while guests howl with joy.  ALBERTA FALLS: This one or two-person tube slide features drops, chutes and serpentine 180-degree and 360-degree banked curves. It’s the perfect slide for parents and kids to enjoy together, or for siblings to have fun racing each other to the bottom.  RIVER CANYON RUN: This  rollicking family raft ride sends up to four riders on a white-water adventure down one of the park’s longest slides. With no steep drops, this is the perfect slide for parents and the kids to enjoy together.  CONTINUED >

GREAT WOLF LODGE OPENS IN SCOTTSDALE

(CON TI N UED)

SLAP TAIL POND: The audio cue of a howling wolf brings this gigantic wave pool to life with waves reaching up to three feet in height. The active surf rolls through every five minutes, to the giggling delight of the children in the pool. It’s a family favorite. CROOKED CREEK: In this reprieve from the more active attractions in the waterpark, guests can relax and float on tubes down the winding lazy river located in the middle of the park.  CHINOOK COVE: This is a perfect activity pool featuring basketball hoops, floating obstacles and other more action-oriented elements for children.  BIG FOOT PASS: Unique water obstacle challenge where kids and adults balance on floating logs and lily pads while traversing the pool. Cargo netting hangs down to help guests cross from one side to the other.  WHOOPING HOLLOW: A special section of the waterpark designed exclusively for toddlers and younger guests, this play pool is filled with perfectly sized water slides featuring gentle slopes and tiny turns, making them the go-to attractions for the “under 42 inches” set. Adjacent is a zero-depth entry pool with water fountain features and sprayand-play adventures.  26

North Scottsdale Lifestyle | October 2019

The resort will also feature an oversized outdoor resort pool so families can take advantage of the Arizona weather. Near the outdoor pool, Great Wolf Lodge will offer an adult-only oasis with relaxing chaise lounge chairs and a private hot tub. Culinary excellence has not been overlooked at The Lodge, and mouthwatering selections can be found across the resort. Start the day at Campfire Kitchen, an interactive a la carte cafe located inside the resort’s Adventure Park, featuring their signature wolf paw-shaped waffles. Feeding your pack doesn’t get easier than a visit to Hungry as a Wolf, where madeto-order handcrafted pizzas are waiting for families looking to refuel after a fun-filled day at the water park. Barnwood features a fresh and seasonal menu in a rustic-themed setting with both indoor and outdoor seating options. The menu will feature an ever-changing array of dishes made from locally sourced ingredients and reflect what is fresh and in-season. An extensive cocktail menu is available as well. To satisfy hunger quickly, on-the-go guests can visit Freshwoods Market, a graband-go market designed for a quick bite. Or, for a South of the Border feel, Timbers focuses on Southwest fares such as nachos, soups, salads and a la carte street tacos. An overnight stay at Great Wolf Lodge Arizona includes two days of indoor water park enjoyment with access starting after 1 p.m. on check-in day and the ability to stay until park close on the day of check-out. Standard rates start at $179.99 per night. PHOTO RENDERINGS: Due to the unique concept  specifically crafted for the Arizona market, these are renderings of the look and feel Scottsdale is fortunate to house. Actual photos will not be released until post grand opening;  however, a visit to the resort will reveal the exciting custom look and feel that is accurately captured in these renderings.

Tool Frontman’s Merkin Vineyards brings Perfect Pairings to Scottsdale

LEAD SINGER OF ROCK BANDS TOOL, A PERFECT CIRCLE AND PUSCIFER, MAYNARD KEENAN RECENTLY OPENED A TASTING ROOM FOR HIS NORTHERN ARIZONA WINERIES, MERKIN VINEYARDS AND CADUCEUS CELLARS, IN DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE. Merkin Vineyards gives locals a rare opportunity to experience the fruits of Keenan’s labor by allowing them to taste a diverse selection of wines from around Arizona. “In order to truly understand Arizona wines, we feel it is essential to visit these magical regions and experience them firsthand,” Keenan says. “However, not every visitor to the greater Phoenix area has the extra time to visit these semi-remote areas. The Merkin Vineyards location in Old Town Scottsdale is meant to be an introduction to that magic.” Due to Keenan’s belief that well-made regional wine speaks more loudly of a place than any other beverage or produce and, therefore, serves as both export and local draw, Keenan explains that his decade-plus of experience in growing fruits and vines in Arizona has taught him something crucial. “Our Southwest wines have an identity. They stand apart from other regions, and our state producers 30

have received countless awards to prove it. Those international accolades started rolling in once we embraced the fact that Mother Nature is in charge. We molded our practices to reflect her movements, and that is when the region truly began to express through our wines.” Merkin Vineyards Old Town Scottsdale Wine Bar’s general manager, Jim Cunningham, has created pairings for all occasions, proving a night out at Merkin Vineyards is a full culinary experience. LOUKANIKA AND DATES / MERKIN CHUPACABRA BLANCA – The traditional Greek salami recipe uses garlic, cumin and orange zest nestled on a plate next to sweet Medjool dates. This small bite tapa plate and wine give a great back-and-forth of sweet, salt, spice and acid that makes for a great start to a meal. Higher acidity of the wine helps counter the richness and fat from the salami. The bright fruit of the white wine lends a complementary hand to the sweetness of the dates while the spice of the salami makes the bright fruit pop out of the glass. SQUASH GALETTES / MERKIN CHUPACABRA BUBBLES – Crisp on the outside, plush on the center, these small cakes made from freshly shredded garden squash were made for the bubbly variation of the beloved Chupacabra.  The fuller-bodied nature of this sparkling wine matches the creaminess of the squash and the bed of smoked ricotta cheese they sit upon, while the warm and rich galettes beg for the bubbly white wine to cleanse your palate after every bite. CRISP BERKSHIRE PORK BELLY / CADUCEUS AIRAVATA – The Airavata is 100% northern Arizona grown Garnacha (Grenache) and a heavenly partner for this over-the-top  pork belly.  The vivid fruit of this lighter bodied red wine creates a resonance with the fresh orchard fruit sitting on top of the crispy pork. The Garnacha’s earthy and soft mouthfeel melts away the richness of the entrée and helps carry you on to another bite.
