LIFESTYLE LETTER
Thankful, Through and Through As we move into November, I find myself thinking about what makes a community feel connected. Working on this issue, I kept coming back to the same thing: the people. The families who build something together, the artists who keep creating, the business owners who turn a longtime dream into reality, and the people who quietly show up for others. Our story on Segner’s Jewelers is a wonderful example. Nearly 90 years of serving families is an incredible legacy, but what stayed with me was Jennifer Spies’ perspective on carrying that legacy forward. Her grandfather started the business in 1937, and each generation has added something of its own. Today, Jennifer continues that tradition with a deep appreciation for the relationships Segner’s has built over the years. We also introduce you to artist Christa Peyton, whose work is a reminder to make room for curiosity and play. I loved seeing how her paintings have evolved as she has let go of some of the rules she once placed on herself. Her idea of honoring our inner child feels especially fitting this time of year. Then there is Frances Money of Dot’s Bakery, whose story begins in her grandmother Dot’s kitchen and eventually leads to a bakery of her own. Frances and Carl have created a gathering place on East Austin Street that brings together Dot’s Bakery, Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten, and Scout Spirits. Their story is filled with family, hard work, laughter, and a lifelong dream. Our feature on The Grace Center brings another side of community into focus. Its work for survivors of domestic violence reaches far beyond the shelter, supported by volunteers, donors, advocates, businesses, and neighbors who choose to help. These stories look different, but they share something important: people who care deeply about what they do and the people around them. That is what I am thankful for. Thank you to our readers, advertisers, and local businesses for supporting this magazine and allowing us to continue telling these stories. Enjoy!

Jewelers Tradition A family legacy built one generation, one customer, and one story at a time

For nearly 90 years, Segner’s Jewelers has been part of the Fredericksburg community, marking engagements, anniversaries, milestones, and family traditions along the way. But behind the jewelry is a family story of its own, one that has grown through several generations and continues today with owners Jennifer Spies and her father, Sammy. For Jennifer, being part of that history is both an honor and a responsibility. We sat down with Jennifer to chat about family, Fredericksburg, and the legacy that is Segner’s Jewelers. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO CARRY ON THE SEGNER’S FAMILY LEGACY? Jennifer: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep the family legacy going. I was very close with my grandfather, and I’m grateful that he had a vision that I’m here to honor. My grandfather was a creator and a fixer of everything. He started out repairing jewelry, but he would repair pretty much anything that needed to be repaired in Fredericksburg in those early days. I have that same mentality. I want our doors to be open to every customer and every repair, whether it’s something small, something large, or a complete recreation.” CONTINUED >

SEGNER’S JEWELERS HAS BEEN PART OF YOUR LIFE FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN REMEMBER. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS, AND HOW DID THOSE EARLY EXPERIENCES SHAPE THE ROLE YOU HAVE TODAY? Jennifer: “I’ve lived and breathed this all my life. I was buying jewelry when I was five. I was engraving pieces when I was probably 10 and working on clocks when I was 12. I’m a very hands-on individual, and I like to work. Working is fun. I went on to study the bench side of the jewelry business and spent many years working as the bench jeweler myself. Now I’m more on the administrative side, but I still get to be involved in solving problems and creating things.” Jennifer’s grandfather, John J. Segner, established the business in 1937. Over the decades, other members of the family helped shape its next chapters. Her grandmother became an important part of the customer experience, introducing services such as bridal registry and becoming well known for her pearl stringing. Jennifer’s father, Sammy, took on watchmaking and repair, while her uncle helped lead the company’s second location in Bee Cave for many years. “Each generation added something of its own,” Jennifer says. It helped Segner’s grow without losing the personal connection that started it all. WHAT HAVE THOSE GENERATIONS TAUGHT YOU ABOUT WHAT SEGNER’S SHOULD BE FOR ITS CUSTOMERS? Jennifer: “It’s always the story. Whether it’s a new piece or an old piece that someone brings in because it belonged to their grandmother, it’s always about the story of the jewelry and the connection. We’ve had four or five generations of families come back to the store to find engagement rings. It was important to them, and it was just as important to us.” That long-term relationship is one of the things Jennifer and Sammy value most. Segner’s often meets customers during one of the biggest moments of their lives, then gets to see the story continue. “We get to see it from day one when the guy comes in,” Jennifer says. “We see their emotions, their excitement, and their nerves. Then we move on to when they have babies, anniversaries, and all of a sudden we have clients celebrating their 50th anniversary when I’ve known them since their 20th.”

“I’m thankful for the community always supporting us and looking at us for someone they trust and use for all of their special events in their lives.” - Jennifer
Jennifer and Sammy continuing a family legacy
AS SEGNER’S JEWELERS LOOKS TOWARD ITS FUTURE, WHAT DO YOU HOPE NEVER CHANGES? Jennifer: “Technology is changing fast, and I’m a big believer that we always have to keep learning and growing. But I never want to lose the one-on-one customer service and the individual relationship.” That same commitment to people is what makes Jennifer especially thankful for the community that has supported Segner’s through generations. As the business approaches its 90th anniversary in Fredericksburg and 40th in Bee Cave, she hopes the milestone will be another opportunity to give back, just as the family did for its 80th anniversary. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT SEGNER’S JEWELERS TODAY, WHAT ARE YOU MOST THANKFUL FOR? Jennifer: “I’m thankful for the community, always supporting us and looking to us as someone they trust for all of their special events. I’m thankful for family. Our family is strong. We’re a tight family with lots of support. And I’m thankful for my employees. I have a great team that sees the value of what Segner’s is and what it means to the community.” For a family business approaching its 90th year, that may be the most fitting legacy of all: the pieces matter, but it’s the people and the stories attached to them that make them worth keeping.

FINDING ARTISTIC FREEDOM B E YON D TH E RU LES

Pablo Picasso is often credited with observing, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” It is an idea that resonates deeply with Christa Peyton, a selftaught contemporary artist whose “wildly vibrant” paintings suggest that perhaps the path toward creative freedom is not about learning more, but unlearning what adulthood has taught us. Children create without first asking whether they are doing it correctly. A shape can become a person, a few marks a landscape. Color need not be logical, and beauty does not require explanation. Somewhere in growing up, however, instinct often gives way to rules, judgment and the desire to get things right. Peyton’s evolving practice has become an exercise in reversing that process. Her earlier paintings were recognizable landscapes, birds and botanicals rendered in a quiet, muted palette. Looking back, Peyton describes them simply as “safe.” Then, in 2024, something shifted. Painting on her back porch while listening to an Austin-in-the-’80s playlist, she reached for neon color and memories of the music, fashion, and visual energy of her childhood. Color became an early act of permission. But freedom came incrementally. The bright paintings still held tightly to structure and clean edges. Over time, those boundaries began to fall away too. Peyton painted on loose canvas, sanded through layers and experimented with oil pastels, “adult crayons,” as she delightedly

calls them. When circumstances required her to paint with her nondominant hand, even that became an opportunity to relinquish control and discover something unexpected. There is something distinctly childlike in this way of working, not childish, but instinctive. Children rarely begin by wondering whether a drawing will be successful; they respond to the pleasure and possibility of making it. Peyton is finding her way back to that freedom, one self-imposed rule at a time. Curiosity before judgment, experimentation before outcome, and intuition before correctness. “I’m listening to my intuition more this year,” she says, describing the process of learning to trust herself and understand that doing so is okay. Art, she says, means “complete freedom”—the ability to create without judging herself. It has also given her confidence and, importantly, a way of “honoring my inner child.” Her painting Joyful Defiance gives that evolution a name. Peyton describes the work as the spirit of a child “finding her voice, bending rules, testing boundaries, and choosing joy over

compliance.” Beneath its exuberance is something more personal: her own story emerging through abstraction, embedded in gesture, color, and marks. For Peyton, reclaiming childhood joy is becoming larger than painting. She is writing a book, has written a song rooted in childhood memory, and is developing workshops centered on experimentation rather than prescribed outcomes. She wants participants to play with materials, make imperfect marks and rediscover an instinct adulthood may have quieted: “There’s no judging. There’s no rules.” “I feel grateful that I’m in a position now to pass on ways for other people to express themselves,” she says. Perhaps that is the creative potential Picasso’s observation asks us to preserve: not the ability to make art like a child, but the courage to create before asking permission. GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up
Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.
We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.
“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.
Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.
This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

Frances Money turns a lifelong love of baking into a place of her own
“He’s the talker,” says Frances Money about her husband, Carl, but when she starts talking about baking, she’s off to the races. “I was such a nerd. All I did when I was little was just bake. Every afternoon, my mom was like, ‘Wow, more cookies.’” For Frances, baking has never been simply about following a recipe. It started in her grandmother Dot’s kitchen, where Frances stood on a stool just to reach the counter. From that perch, she learned to make cakes, cookies, hand pies, and other sweets, picking up the skills and love of baking that would eventually become her career. Today, she is the owner and head baker at Dot’s Bakery. You can find it tucked away at 314 E. Austin St. The bakery carries more than Dot’s name. It carries the lessons Frances learned at her grandmother’s side, where baking was an afternoon pastime that would quietly become a lifelong calling. More than 20 years ago, Frances studied to become a pastry chef at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Austin, which has since closed. But before culinary school, there were plenty of signs that baking was where she belonged. CONTINUED >

As a young adult, Frances followed her parents’ advice and earned a degree in business finance from LSU. It was a practical choice, but her heart was still in the kitchen. “I always knew I wanted to go to cooking school and be in this profession. I worked in restaurants, other bakeries, and catering, but I always wanted to have my own space.” That dream took her farther than she expected. Frances met Carl after stopping by his house in Dallas because he had put out a For Rent sign. She didn’t end up renting the house. Instead, the two got married and moved to London together. There, Frances became bakery manager and pastry chef at the renowned Primrose Bakery. She helped create and test recipes for the bakery’s first two cookbooks, adding an international chapter to a career that had started with cookies on a kitchen counter. After living abroad, the couple found their way to Fredericksburg, where they had always wanted to raise their growing family and manage their vineyard and winery, Pontotoc Vineyard. Frances’s picnic baskets became a favorite at Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten on Main Street, filled with brownies, spiced nuts, and other treats. When it was time to move, the couple began looking for a place where Frances could bring her baking into its own. “We always talked about having our own coffee shop and bakery,” says Frances. The East Austin Street property proved to be just the spot. Turning the courtyard, house, and garage into their vision took two years, but today it holds Dot’s Bakery, Pontotoc Vineyard Weingarten, and their boutique distillery, Scout Spirits. The space has already hosted everything from baby showers to celebrations of life, making it clear that Frances and Carl have created more than a bakery. They’ve created a place where people can gather, linger, celebrate and, naturally, enjoy something sweet. “I think everyone’s dream is to own a bakery,” says Frances. “Not everyone,” interjects Carl, “Every pastry chef.” “Well, yeah!” retorts Frances, clearly grateful that her childhood dream and her grandmother led her to be one.

The Grace Center Gives
“THANKS” a Deeper MEANING
You can see pieces of The Grace Center’s work around town, from Schatze Haus to community events and youth programs. What happens behind the scenes, though, is where the heart of its mission comes into focus. It’s in the little things: neighbors who lend a hand, businesses that give back, volunteers who show up, and organizations doing work most of us hope we will never need for ourselves or someone we love. The Grace Center provides safety and a path forward for people affected by domestic violence, reaching far beyond the walls of its shelter. “The community continues to pour into The Grace Center, making it possible for us to carry out our life-changing work with some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Through the dedication of our team and the generosity of our supporters, The Grace Center provides victims of domestic violence with the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives— offering housing, healing, and hope," says Hattie Heiner, Executive Director at The Grace Center.

CREATING SPACE FOR SAFETY, HEALING AND NEW BEGINNINGS ARTICLE BY KELLY SHEARING
“The community continues to pour into The Grace Center, making it possible for us to carry out our life-changing work with some of the most vulnerable members of our community." - Hattie, Executive Director
The Grace Center’s 47-bed shelter opened in 2023, giving survivors a safe place to begin again. Through shelter, counseling, and advocacy, the organization meets people during some of their hardest moments and gives them the space and support to move forward. The need for that support does not take a holiday. In fact, the holidays can bring added stress, isolation, and other challenges for people experiencing abuse, making access to safety and support especially important. But the work doesn’t stop when someone leaves the shelter. Through Grace Ambassadors, local teens and young adults learn about healthy relationships, consent, and boundaries. It is an investment in the next generation and an opportunity to give young people the confidence to recognize unhealthy behaviors and help foster a culture rooted in respect. Even an afternoon of shopping can be part of the mission. Schatze Haus is the perfect place
to stop in with friends, treasure hunt through clothing, furniture, and home finds, and maybe discover something you didn’t know you needed. With two locations, there are plenty of opportunities to shop or donate while supporting The Grace Center’s work. It is a simple way to give back: find a treasure, pass along something from your own home, and know that your purchase or donation is helping support an organization doing meaningful work in healing and supporting people throughout the community. And there are plenty of other ways to show up. Volunteer. Attend an event. Learn more about the resources available. Tell someone about The Grace Center. Give what you can. We may never know whose life is changed because someone made one of those choices. But every choice helps create a safer place for the people who call this community home. Sometimes, thanks looks a lot like showing up. NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/FRE D E R I C KS BUR G
