A Fresh Take

ON VINTAGE INSPIRED THREADS

The fashion industry is always on the lookout for fresh talent, and there is nothing quite as exciting as discovering an emerging designer with a unique perspective and fresh ideas. This is exactly the case with Zach Stevens, a new on-the-scene designer who is currently enrolled in the merchandising program at Colorado State University. Despite being relatively unknown, Zach has been making waves in the industry with his unconventional designs and passion for sustainable fashion. Get ready to discover a rising star with us in the interview below.

LS: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN FASHION DESIGN?

Zach: The very first fashion show that I attended I knew that something in the fashion industry was my calling. It was Colorado State University’s Merchandise and Design’s senior capstone fashion show. I was in attendance watching the show, and every aspect was so powerful and inspiring for me. For the first time ever I told myself that I have found something that I wanted to turn into a career and that was fashion design.

LS: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC?

Zach: A blend of Rock ’n’ roll, punk rock, and Art Nouveau

LS: CAN YOU WALK ME THROUGH YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS WHEN DESIGNING A NEW COLLECTION OR GARMENT?

Zach: The first thing I do is some market research and identify my customer. Whatever category I’m designing I like to see what other designers are making or garments that are out there already in the market. This can give you information on what sold well or not. This can also provide direction and information on construction and what fabrics are preferred. Knowing your customer is everything. I will create a fictitious person that

I’m designing for and study their socioeconomics and demographics. This information provides a rich starting point because your customers' lives are defined by these things. Now the fun part begins, the creative research which shapes the theme and overall look of the collection. I enjoy finding this information at libraries and find myself researching rebel painters from the pre-Raphaelite era to early 20th-century painters. I seem to always pair this with rock and roll and or punk rock cultural dress. I will start creating an inspiration board, a mood board, and a color board. My goal is to bring new designs and innovative utilitarian designs to garments

LS: HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY AND ETHICAL PRACTICES INTO YOUR DESIGN PROCESS?

Zach: For my senior capstone collection, I sourced my fabrics from SwatchOn. They offer a range of sustainable and eco-friendly fabrics. When I could, I used cellulose textiles in substitution for petroleum-based synthetic textiles.

Throwing a Block

The Fort Collins Police Services Special Weapons and Tactics team has faced numerous challenging cases over the years. However, their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting their community remains steadfast. Regardless of the time or place, the team is always prepared to respond when called upon. While Officer Justin Burch has witnessed some difficult cases during his time with the FCPS SWAT team, he remains proud to be part of a team that is well-trained and ready to handle any situation.

“Obviously, going through the door on a hostage situation — that's one of the riskiest things that we can do,” Burch said. “But we've trained for it.”

Hostage situations are rare and dangerous occurrences that require a rapid and coordinated response from law enforcement.

However, speed can lead to mistakes, as Sgt. Gar Haugo warned. “It causes you to think in a compressed timeframe,” he said.

This can causally bring about the ability to switch between a tactical mindset and their innate emotional reactions.

“There is a lot of stimulation and excitement, but you're not really thinking a long way (out),” Haugo said. “(For example), 'What if I get shot and paralyzed today? Then what's going to happen? Who's going to take care of my kids?’ You're not thinking about those kinds of things.”

To mitigate the risk both physically and emotionally, the team emphasizes working tactically and methodically through high-pressure situations. Guided by a safety priority system, the team directs their actions toward those who do not have the ability to leave the situation.

This can lead to the employment of specialized equipment and/or a tactic known as "throwing a block." This technique involves members physically shielding a person from an attacker with their bodies, compounding the risk to themselves.

This tactical approach has resulted in the team successfully completing 279 tactical call-outs over the past four years with no fatal encounters caused by officers, according to FCPS.

Due to the highly stimulating environments officers engage with, the department provides resources like psychologists and encourages utilizing a network of fellow officers and family for further support.

“There used to be kind of a stigma against getting (that) sort of help or talking about things like that,” Burch said. “And I don't necessarily think that's a thing of the past everywhere, but I think it's kind of a thing of the past here, or at least we're working toward that.”

Some experiences follow officers’ home and continue to affect them, which prompts them to find ways to cope and heal with their families. Haugo found that discussing his work life with his family eases their concerns.

“I think sharing that with them is, for me, a way of telling them, ‘Hey, everything went okay,'” Haugo said. “‘The guys are alright.’”

His wife of 13 years, Amanda Haugo, was a patrol officer and detective before meeting Gar. Working mostly on sex crimes and patrol beats, Amanda said she has found she can relate to Gar’s work and appreciates his transparency.

Even with the transparency and her ability to relate, some things are still difficult, especially when raising two kids.

“Sometimes I feel like work gets the best of him,” Amanda said. “And then we get what's left over when he comes home. Honestly, that part is hard sometimes.”

But on every call, she is proud of her husband and the team. “They would give their lives to protect people they don't know,” Amanda said.

Fellow officer of eight years and father of three, August Barber, had discussions with his children as well. They have seen the media talk about police officers and picked up on things in school, both good and bad.

“Even though they hear these things, they know me as their father,” Barber said. “Obviously, they know what I've taught them, and if it doesn't line up with what they're hearing, then we just work through that.”

Over the years, Barber’s children have begun to understand what it is their father does and the dangers associated with the job.

His children have seen their father injured and, further, other police officers’ funerals.

“I think it becomes a little more realistic for them when they see me or see one of our friends get hurt,” Barber said. “But we just have to work through it.”

Despite being able to discuss tough situations with their families, fellow officers, and the department psychologist, there are still incidents that have lasting effects on officers. For many officers, it is when children are involved or end up passing away.

“When I see someone my child's age, you know, pass away from something, that's something that hits really close,” Barber said. “And you try not to put yourself or your kid in that situation, … but that's difficult as a parent. You try to not let it bother you, but it's going to bother you.”

It is in these moments that officers strive to contain their emotions and balance compassion because they believe it is their duty to be resolute and enduring. They cope with the situations they are faced with by focusing on what they need to do for the family in that moment.

“For better or worse, I’ve been equipped with the mental fortitude and the physical ability to do these things,” Burch said. “And I would like to be able to do them so that my family doesn't have to deal with this stuff.

Undeterred by the effects on their personal lives, members of the FCPS SWAT team joined to step between those intending to do harm and those who may be harmed, Haugo said. Though like any profession, there are those within policing who do not live up to the communities' or departments' expectations. There are some who have racist beliefs and take advantage of their position, Haugo acknowledged.

“Guess who goes and catches them and puts them in jail?” Haugo said. “We do. Guess who despises them equally or more than anybody else? We do — because it is disgusting to us that they devalue what we do by doing that kind of crap. That makes me furious.”

Those who do live up to the FCPS motto of “safety and service of all” are christened onto the team with a pin, a new rifle and a challenge coin with a depiction of Saint Michael and the words “Sacrifice, Work, Attitude and Team” engraved on it.

For those who have put in the work and proved themselves, that is what it means to be a SWAT officer. It doesn’t matter who the caller is.

“When it comes down to it, when (a community member) picks up that phone, (the) one thing there is going to be certainty about is that we’re going to be there,” Barber said. “And there is no disputing that because we will never not come.”

AN EDGY OASIS AWAITS IN THE HEART OF NORTHERN COLORADO

Upon arrival at this impressive Timnath estate with panoramic views of Timnath Reservoir and the Rockies, your attention is drawn to the multitude of remarkable features. From the stunning water feature in the front garden to the infinity glass garage doors and under-lit concrete steps that lead up to the custom metal slab door, each detail is a feast for the eyes.

As you make your way into the entry you’re greeted by a nearly 37-foot ceiling in the living room. The Douglas Fir beams stretch all the way up and across the ceiling for an impressive cathedral feel. The 75-year-old barn wood floors with a clear metallic finish, mainly sourced from Wisconsin, stretch the length of the living room and kitchen making the space warm and inviting to the spacious living area.

Designer and homeowner, Ashley Underwood, had influence in every corner of this five-bedroom, seven-bath house. From custom artwork that adorns the walls to the custom furniture and light fixtures, they all have what she calls her ‘Mountain

Rocker’ style. The dark tones complement the details in texture and metallic highlights. The partnership between wood accents and the use of multi-stone work makes the Mountain Modern home feel original and warm. Every aspect was meticulously calculated and well-thought-out so that this trendy home would remain timeless.

Giant custom Hammerton Studio light fixtures with blown glass hang from a custom Vahallan handpainted wallpapered ceiling, making a unique and exquisite focal point to the large space. A nine-foot sink, Cambria matte black quartz countertops, custom William OHS cabinets, and La Cantina sliding door and kitchen windows, that have extra UV protection, are a few of the highlights in this elegant space. The real showstopper is the honed stone Copacabana reverse waterfall island that gives a matte look and a velvet feel.

The powder room off the kitchen features Porcelanosa stone and slate floor-to-ceiling walls. The beautifully textured and thin stone brings the mountain vibe to the forefront and is paired with a giant back-lit circular mirror that makes the space edgy and modern. The stone walls make appearances throughout the house along with a floating toilet in every bathroom.

Long-time friends, Andrea Tuell and Kelly McBartlett, who both independently focus on highend homes, came together to co-list this stunning house that sits on 1.36 acres. The impressive team is taking on this gorgeous estate and working closely with the Underwood family to bring this house to its full potential. Both Andrea and Kelly are well-respected real estate agents in Northern Colorado and are the perfect duo to take on such an elegantly striking estate.

The bold and masculine style of this house is consistent and stately. Every room flows in theme while bringing something new to the table. Whether it be a different version of a Hammerton Studio light fixture or a different color of the stone walls, this house is styled to enhance accent pieces and highlights the true mountain modern feel it’s after.

The wood, metal, and stone accents continue in the master bedroom. A wooden beam mantle with accented metal bolts contrasts to give the space its modern style without compromising the warmth in

the room. A custom Hubbardton light fixture with blown glass gives the room a robust modern and edgy feel that demands attention and allows your eye to travel to every on-theme detail Ashley included in this space. The master bath is softened by the inclusion of a Sophstone bathtub, counters, and sinks, plenty of sunlight, and a custom built-in hutch with copper mesh doors. The rose copper hardware, faucets, towel racks, and shower head add a nice shine and slight delicate touch to this darker-toned room.

As you make your way upstairs you encounter the Hammerton Studio light fixture that hangs from the ceiling down the three flights of stairs. The underlit Douglas Fir floating staircase wraps around this statement piece while also providing originality to the space. The blown glass upholds the modern elements while the black metal ties in with the black aviation cable railing. The multilevel light fixture acts as an art piece with its magnificent size and grand appearance that carries out through every level of this house.

While the upstairs acts as the kid's area, Ashley continued the sleek elements while creating a space equipped for youthful energy and expression. Her same mountain, rocker, and slightly masculine style is shown through the granite countertops, barn doors made from Wyoming snow fence and patina metal, petrified wood sinks, and a variety of stone and tile work in the bathrooms. An oxidized Venetian plaster wall with art lighting is highlighted in the upstairs hallway. This rust-colored wall brings character and provides an upscale feature to a transitional space in the house.

The basement of this house does not fall short compared to the upper levels. An earth-cooled wine cellar, home gym, an entertainment area with a projection theater, gun and safe room, full bar, and swing chairs all follow the same modern, edgy theme while demonstrating their own uniqueness to the living space. The wine cellar holds 2400 bottles and is detailed with sumptuous lighting and a six-color epoxy floor. The custom built-in walnut slab with a copper metallic acrylic inlay elevates the room and gives it that rocker touch.

The living area and theater are everything you would need in an entertainment space. The wood-slotted ceiling with lighting elongates the room and provides

a modern contemporary feel. The cool tones and textured accents in these spaces bounce the eye from one thing to the next. The four swinging chairs add a playful element and the theater is classy and comfortable. The full bar adds a pop of copper color without taking away from the other shared spaces. With a beverage fridge, kegerator, and dishwasher, it is well-equipped to provide the perfect entertainment area. This basement is truly meant for the family and provides a little something for everyone.

The guest suite in the basement is roomy and comfortable. This suite provides perfect elements to make any guest feel right at home with a mini kitchenette with a fridge, coffee maker, and sink, a full bathroom with a free-standing tub that fills from the ceiling, and a washer and dryer. The room has a custom Hubbardton light fixture and a leather wallpapered accent wall that brings Ashley’s style into this space.

The outside of the home features custom Hearth House fireplaces on the back deck and patio, a ventilated smoker, an outdoor kitchen with soapstone counters, and black aviation cable railings that tie in the stylish and sleek touches from inside the house. The heated, oversized five-car garage has a six-color epoxy floor finish that provides a pop of color and originality to this otherwise mundane area of a house. Just inside is the mud room with sealed limestone floors and a washroom for man’s best friend. Custom cabinets for storage and a spacious butler's pantry around the corner offer a variety of practical-use spaces for families and their furry friends.

This spacious 8500 square foot house somehow still feels lived in and homey. Ashley didn’t hold back when creating this stylish mountain modern masterpiece and left no stone unturned. Every inch of this house, from the can light placements to the statement art pieces around the home, was curated to carry out this tastefully masculine style to every room. Although time and incredible amounts of effort from Ashley and the real estate team, Andrea and Kelly, were put into this estate, this monumental mountain modern may just sell itself.

Be A Man

SELF CARE | BEAUTY

Go to the Spa

Fifteen or twenty years ago one would almost never hear about a male receiving any type of medical spa treatment. The budding industry at that time was almost exclusively targeted at women. Like so many things in society, we are seeing a large shift in that mentality. Men, too, have started to realize the benefits of self-care, and medical spas are leading the way. Partly because the industry has greatly expanded to be much more inclusive of services and procedures that men are interested in, partly because men are becoming more aware of the opportunities that exist for them, and partly because of the buying behaviors of millennials shifting the space dramatically.

One of the primary reasons men are turning to medical spas is that they offer treatments that are specifically designed for men’s needs. From wrinkles and fine lines to unwanted hair and stubborn fat, or even hair restoration and overcoming acne, medical spas offer a range of treatments that can help men achieve their desired appearance without the need for surgery. Men also often appreciate the privacy and discretion that medical spas offer. Unlike traditional spas, medical spas have a more clinical feel to them (while still providing an aura of luxury), and the treatments are administered and overseen by a team of medical professionals.

Another reason men are choosing medical spas is that they offer non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments that require little to no downtime. Many men don’t want to take time off work or disrupt their schedules for lengthy recovery periods. Medical spas offer quick and efficient treatments that can be done during a lunch break or after work.

As a male who owns a local medical spa, I am keenly aware of services targeted to men. In a region where the medical spas are almost exclusively run by women, I believe the male voice is oftentimes overlooked. It

would be my goal to change that reality. To create both the space and the services to fill that space, that bring great meaning for men. Let’s take a quick look at just a few of the opportunities.

“Brotox” and Dermal Fillers Botox (commonly referred to as Brotox by male clientele) is a neurotoxin that is injected into the muscles of the face to relax them, which can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are injected into the skin to add volume, smooth out wrinkles and lines, and enhance facial features such as the cheeks, lips, and even create a more defined jawline. While these treatments were once seen as a domain primarily for women, the growing popularity of Botox and dermal fillers among men reflects a shift in attitudes toward male grooming and self-care.

Men are now more comfortable than ever before in seeking out aesthetic treatments to enhance their appearance and improve their confidence. One reason for the popularity of Brotox and dermal fillers among men is that they offer a quick and convenient way to address common concerns such as wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of facial volume adding to an aged appearance. These treatments can be completed in a matter of minutes, with little to no downtime required, making them a convenient option for busy men who don’t have the time or inclination to undergo more invasive procedures.

Medical Weight Loss and Body Contouring, let’s face it, maintaining a healthy-looking body does not have a gender role assigned to it. Especially in our active community of northern Colorado, keeping a fit physique is something we hear about everywhere we go. The reality is, however, that as we age, this conversation becomes increasingly more challenging. Thus, we enter the opportunity for the medical spa to step in and provide assistance.

Semaglutide is the latest in the medical weight loss conversation. It has taken this country by storm. Mostly because it is the first medical weight loss option that is both as safe as it is effective. Commonly known as Ozempic or Wegovy, semaglutide works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, a hormone that is naturally produced in the body in response to food intake. GLP-1 stimulates the release of insulin from the pancreas, which helps to lower blood sugar levels. It also acts on the brain to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness or satiety. By mimicking the action of GLP-1, semaglutide can help to reduce appetite and food intake, leading to weight loss.

In clinical trials, semaglutide has been shown to be highly effective for significant weight loss. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2021, participants who took semaglutide lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks, compared to those who received a placebo and lost an average of 2.4% of

their body weight. Body Contouring (just like it sounds) is the process of shaping and contouring the body utilizing devices to remove fat, build muscle, and tighten skin. The reality is that as we age, it doesn’t matter how often we hit the gym. Those stubborn areas of fat are harder and harder to get rid of. Devices like the CoolSculpting Elite and the EmSculpt NEO provide a little support to get the job done for everything from the flanks to the abs, back fat, arms, legs, or nearly any place that bothers you. Neither procedurerequire undergoing the knife which makes recovery a breeze. There are individuals who have literally been able to replace their gym workouts with device treatments to provide a more toned and sculpted physique.

An ongoing conversation for many men, is the “migration” of hair from the head to more unsightly places, say, like the back. Hair restoration has been one of the leaders in the aesthetic place for men. The ability to regrow a full head of hair helps build confidence for many men

who aren’t quite ready to “rock” a balding appearance. Once upon a time, this meant hair transplants and plugs. Today we have devices like the Alma TED (Trans Epidermal Delivery) that stimulate follicle growth at the deepest layers. Combined with other treatments like PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) or exosomes and the opportunity to grow back your own hair becomes even more within reach.

Speaking of that great “migration”, there are many places men don’t actually want hair to grow. Laser hair removal makes the process of permanent removal of that hair quick and easy. It wasn’t long ago that a full back treatment was both a bit painful and lengthy. The newest lasers in the marketplace, like the Clarity II by Lumenis, create a full paradigm shift. Now a full back can be treated in less than six to eight 30-minute sessions. And the best part? Patients no longer need to bite down on a stick to get through the treatment.

Erectile Dysfunction and Urinary Incontinence represent two of the topics that will bring many men to their knees. We have many drugs that are now available to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and we have Depends undergarments for urinary incontinence, but why not simply fix the actual cause of the problem rather than mask the symptoms? Enter the world of Emsella. A chair where you sit fully clothed for less than 30 minutes to greatly improve both of these troubling issues. Emsella utilizes a high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate and build pelvic floor muscles. It is a completely non-invasive procedure that works by emitting electromagnetic waves that penetrate through the skin and cause the pelvic floor muscles to contract and relax rapidly. This muscle stimulation leads to increased strength and improved muscle tone of the pelvic floor muscle. The outcomes have been remarkable even for reducing the need to urinate throughout the night. And the sexual health benefits are exciting compared to the need to pop a pill in preparation for intercourse.

What we can achieve for skin care in the medical spa is only a small part of the larger conversation. The need for medical-grade skincare to support that journey is a huge component of overall success. Ask 10 guys what they use for their skincare routine and seven will likely share that it is a bar of soap. Luckily, skincare companies are catering directly to the male consumer and have developed high-quality skin care products tailored directly to the needs of an aging male dermal treatment. One of the favorites is the Jan Marini Men’s System. It is easy to follow without too many steps with products specifically formulated for male skincare concerns. It includes everything a guy needs from cleansing and shaving products to a resurfacing product for tone and texture, along with a

hydration product full of peptides to moisturize. Wrap it all up with the all-important SPF to protect the skin from UV damage and we have an easy-to-follow four-step system. The conversation could go on and on and on. At Xanadu Med Spa we have lasers that target acne, age spots, and sun damage. We have devices to take care of skin tags and cherry angiomas. We have massage, facials (including the ever-popular HydraFacial), chemical peels, and teeth whitening. We even have the EmFace that stimulates the muscles in the face to maintain a toned youthful appearance and provide a non-invasive facelift.
