September is known as the fashion and style issue in the magazine world, and we are thrilled to participate in the trend. Not only are we bringing you fashion that will help keep you on top of the latest fall styles, but we are also sharing a trendy art gallery and a new Italian hotspot to grab a meal. Styles are ever-changing, and the fashion world continuously brings us a fresh new take on something from generations past or shares an entirely new concept for us to enjoy. Each decade has its own unique trends, and although some cycle back decades later, the originality of each look that is reflected oftentimes is connected to the culture and music of the day. I’m a child of the '80s and spent my formative years in the '90s. It’s been funny to watch mom jeans make a comeback and Dr. Martens return to the mainstream. Just a few years ago I finally rid my bathroom cabinet of claw clips and scrunchies, and low and behold, my daughters are now asking me to buy them those very same hair accessories that I thought were gone for good. I may draw the line at acid washed jeans, but I’m secretly high-fiving that sweater vests and corduroy skirts are back on the scene. Jake is contem plating reviving his metal band T-shirts, a look that is in stark contrast to his current love of button-downs and polo shirts. Fun fact: When I first met Jake in the early 2000s, his look consisted of two chunky, ball hoop earrings and a black leather jacket that he wore even when it wasn’t that cold outside. September also marks the start of school. If you listen closely, you can hear the collective roar of parents rejoicing. This will be a more “normal” start to a school year that we’ve had in a long time. While I absolutely love the lazy days of summer and hanging out at the beach and the pool, there is something so refreshing about the beginning of fall and the return to the hectic schedule we endure being the parents of four children. One of the reasons I love living in a place with four seasons is that it makes each one more special. Goodbye, summer and hello, fall. We shall meet again soon.

The 101st annual Far Hills Race Meeting—historically known as “The Hunt”—takes place on October 15 at Moorland Farm in Far Hills. His mixed-media pieces feature iconic imagery such as Monopoly and Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe portraits. “I also like the concept of space, so a lot of my work incorporates space travel imagery, like the his toric moment when man landed on the moon,” he says.
Many of Fandel’s pieces are collectors’ items in their own right because of the vintage material he
Then, life happened: College, jobs and challenges that brought him, as he says, “to a dark place.” With the support of family and friends, Fandel set his course straight again and in the process rediscovered the guiding light that would define his life going forward: art. “Art just found its way back to me. I fell back in love with it immediately,” he says. “It allowed me to focus on putting lines and strokes onto canvas and let the other stuff just fade away.” Fandel uses Photoshop or Illustrator to create images that he prints onto canvas or works on the canvas with acrylic paint or collage. “My inspiration is Pop art and posters,” he says. “Growing up, my room was filled with posters and items like magazines and CD and DVD covers that had a strong picture and a few words to grab attention.”
He usually starts in Photoshop or Illustrator to plan a layout before going to work on canvas with acrylic or using mixed media to create a collage. Sometimes he will use the digital images he creates and print them directly onto canvas.
The Bridgewater-Raritan High School (Class of 2004) graduate drew his entire life and loved art classes in school. When he discovered Photoshop as a teen, he gravitated toward digital art, excited by the graphic possibilities it allowed.

For example, his homage to the moon landing includes newspapers from 1969 as the background and his por trait of Kobe Bryant features 30 Sports Illustrated covers. “I don’t think people realize what a piece of art can do on a wall—whether it’s a wall that you pass once a day, sit by for hours or see only a few times a year,” Fandel says. “It can change your mood instantly and set a vibe.”
For years, Fandel’s Raritan home served as his studio. In October 2021, he opened an eponymous gallery on Main Street in Somerville that serves as his working stu dio outside of gallery hours. “This gave me the space to create larger canvases,” heWhensays. you visit, you will also see another aspect of Fandel’s creativity: His Perfected Clothing Company line. “I have always wanted to do clothing, and it was always going to be streetwear,” he says. “I’m just meticulous and needed the knowledge of every aspect of the process before I could finally start putting the line out. This also gives customers a more feasible way to support me if the artwork is out of their price range.”

At Basilico, Chef-Owner Joey Trani Shares Recipes Inspired by His Upbringing on the Italian Island of Ischia
“We were looking for a walking town close to home,” says LaSpisa, who was born and raised in Hillsborough. “Joey’s family had restaurants. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Our goal was to serve fresh, made-from-scratch food inspired by his upbringing: dishes that you could actually find if you went to Italy.” For example, LaSpisa notes, expect a lot of fresh cherry tomatoes and basil.

The dishes are the creations of Giuseppe (Joey) Trani, who co-owns Basilico with fiancé Kari LaSpisa. Trani, who was born in Princeton and moved to Ischia as a young child, attended culinary school and owned a restaurant there for 10 years before returning to New Jersey 30 years later, in 2013. Over the past decade, the Hillsborough couple owned and operated numerous restaurants, but longed for a special place to plant roots for an authentic Italian restaurant.

CULINARY CREATIONS | FOOD + BEVERAGE Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca Al Limone DIRECTIONS In saucepan, heat olive oil and garlic clove (keeping clove intact to remove before eating), add remaining ingredients except for tomatoes. After 3 minutes, add can of cherry tomatoes, salt and pepper then simmer for approximately 10 minutes. Anchovies should be melted into sauce. Discard garlic clove. Add cooked spaghetti and toss to coat. Serve with Parmigiano-Reggiano. DIRECTIONS In saucepan, heat heavy cream with lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper. Simmer until it starts to thicken and slightly reduce. Add cheese, arugula and pignoli and stir together. Toss with cooked pasta of your choice. *Measurements for 1 serving.
