Artistic Expresssion WHAT MAKES SOMEONE FASHIONABLE? I firmly believe that everyone has style, some are just more skilled at expressing it than others. It’s a way to be seen—and to connect. For many of us, it’s how we communicate our distinct creativity, taking something and making it our own. How we share ourselves manifests in countless forms. Personal style might be revealed in the color of our hair, tattoos we display, clothes we wear, accessories we choose, the music we listen to or how we decorate our homes. It all stems from the same creative place, radiating outward, showing the world we’re marching to the beat of our own drums. This month we take a closer look at what it means to be fashionable—as a person, a brand or a place. Because how we express ourselves matters. As you thumb through these pages, we hope to inspire, delight and propel you into new ways of sharing your own creative spirit.

What was once a youthful narrative of thirsty couch crashers looking for a few free beers is now a successful group of seasoned artists selling out shows from Red Rocks to Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. “Our music is honest. sense it’s a little self-indulgent, but there’s something honest there that is endearing. We are all pretty united in our tastes and intentions or have become so over the years. It’s pretty rare that we aren’t unanimously on board for creative adventures down some musical wormhole.” The traveling band can often be seen at festivals, from Horning’s Hideout to Summer Camp, where they perform on their acoustic stringed instruments with laid-back energy that draws devoted listeners. Between working on a new record this year, they are also prepping for their three upcoming shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre taking place September 17, 18 and 19. “After not playing shows for more than a year and then returning to the stage, I felt like I was looking out at a triumphant reunion, recognizing nearly every face,'' Paul says, “we are so grateful for the bond.” STAY CONNECTED TO THE BAND: Website: GreenSkyBluegrass.com Instagram: @GreenskyBluegrass

ITSA LIKA IS BOULDER’S FIRST NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER. THEIR PHILOSOPHY— ENJOY YOUR DAY AND REMEMBER YOUR NIGHT.

50

Boulder Lifestyle | September 2021

WHEN PARTICIPATING IN A DRY JANUARY CHALLENGE IN 2019, SCOTT PEARCE AND ROBB SHURR CAME TO A SHARED CONCLUSION—THERE WASN’T A NON-ALCOHOLIC BEER AVAILABLE THAT SATIATED THEIR DESIRE FOR CRAFT BEER. That realization provided inspiration for Itsa Lika beer, which launched May 2021. In order to create that hoppy profile that both Scott and Robb desired, they collaborated with a friend who had been the pilot brewer at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company for 15 years. “He started experimenting and playing around, and the guy is just a wizard,” Robb says. “He basically came up with this new process for brewing a [non-alcoholic beer].” Their main challenge is retaining the fullness of the flavor profile. “You lose some of the body because of how the grain bill is set up, so that’s something that we’re trying to overcome,” Robb says. “You just don’t get that thickness and the richness of that body. All NAs are, some people describe it as, a bit thinner.” Their non-alcoholic beers are the Super Crisp and West Coast Style IPA. Robb says the Super Crisp is true to its name in taste and is something that you could drink in two gulps. The West Coast Style IPA is more citrus-y, with more west coast hops, but according to Robb is still very crisp and light. While neither Scott nor Robb has a background in beer or brewing, they’ve found that makes space for curiosity and innovation. “That’s definitely been the biggest [challenge]— the whole industry is new to us,” Robb says. “At the same time, that allows us to come in and ask really stupid questions and try to improve things…we’re definitely eyes-wide-open learning mode and also trying to do things in different ways.” Scott and Robb hope to serve the sober-curious movement, but also hope Itsa Lika could serve as a “third beer,” meaning someone could substitute an Itsa Lika brew instead of stopping drinking entirely. Robb has found in his own experience that drinking Itsa Lika feels overall much lighter on the body. “As soon as it feels like a real beer, you don’t miss it,” he says. “You’re not seeking that third beer or afternoon beer. I’m out at the shop tuning bikes and skis on a Saturday afternoon and I’m like, ‘Boy, I could use a beer.’ I grab one of these, and I’m perfect. I don’t need to take a nap.”

Our mission is always to be present in our community,” Emily says. “We give to different fundraisers and organizations that are locally recognized. We try to be an active support role in our community and look to figure out a way to be a resource for these non-profits to make money.” At Walters & Hogsett, money is never the motive. Emily and her team aim to use their business as a tool for people to curate life’s special moments. While they’re ensuring that their local peers benefit from the success of the business, they also want to ensure that they are being welcoming to

Offering a curated selection to shoppers with a stricter budget, Walters & Hogsett is determined to beat the stereotype in which people find fine jewelers to be intimidating. IMAGINE A SUNNY AFTERNOON IN TOWN IN THE '60S. You’re strolling downtown gazing towards the majestic Flatiron views when you hear a Rolling Stones tune blasting from the record player. What brought folks to Boulder in the '60s and '70s does not stray far from what brings folks to our bustling mountain town today. Originally a hub for gold miners in the mountains, Boulder quickly morphed into a hidden gem for hikers, outdoors-lovers and young entrepreneurs. I had the opportunity to sit down with Hotel Historian, Laurel McKown, of the historic Hotel Boulderado to chat about all things vintage Boulder. She described this time period as an era of great “transition” and change moving into a more modernized age. Nevertheless, Boulder’s uniqueness, charm and beauty prevailed as the main draw to the city. Like so many others, Laurel’s dream was to live in the mountains and be out West. “The ‘67 Summer of Love which started in San Francisco, was big with the free-spirited movement coming to town,” Laurel says. “People would come and camp out in the mountains west of here. Everyone wanted to settle in Boulder because it was a mecca.” The two economic groups that supported the town, in addition to the CU students and travelers, were the miners and ranchers. They would venture to Boulder to gather supplies— even dynamite—and then go back to their land. CONTINUED >

While Boulder is now known for worldrenowned brews and craft distilleries, it wasn’t until 1967 that they could serve or sell beer other than 3.2. When the prohibition officially lifted, Liquor Mart in Goss Grove was one of the first to receive a liquor license. The Sink, another Boulder institution (started in 1923), was a restaurant that sold 3.2 beer once it became legal in 1933 for the students, and Robert Redford was a dishwasher there,” Laurel says. “You just never knew who you were going to run into!” Pearl Street Mall as we now know it was less developed and more so a simple, functioning downtown. The two economic groups, in addition to the CU students and travelers, that supported the town were the miners and ranchers. They would venture to the local downtown to gather supplies—even dynamite—and then go back to their land. There was a lumberyard in the area with other stores such as McClure’s Dry Goods (now where Peppercorn resides). Anything past 28th St. was considered farmland and outside of town. The introduction of the Crossroads Mall, now Twenty Ninth Street Mall, was the main source of business. However, Pearl Street Mall was revived in 1970, when Governor John A. Love signed the “Public Mall Act,” which prompted city officials to close streets to accommodate the implementation of pedestrian malls. The mall was constructed during the summer of 1976 and formally opened in August of 1977. From here, Boulder started to welcome a growing community focused on cooperative business with an emphasis on the natural food industry. With like-minded individuals at the helm, businesses such as the Carnival Caf experienced a slow burn but had lasting impact. In 1969, Mo Siegel, founder of Celestial Seasonings, began his tea journey by hand-picking wildflowers in the Colorado mountains. While the days of flower power have seemingly passed, Boulder remains a haven for the curious, the free-spirited and the entrepreneurial. CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

My office wants us to start going back parttime, but I’m kind of dreading going back to "normal." I feel really happy working from home! Is there any way to ease the transition stress? Kendra Miguez: For many of us who have learned to adapt to Zoom calls and a two-dimensional world, going back to work in person has created high levels of stress and anxiety. This is mostly due to having so much time away from external stimulation. The best way to re-integrate is to start off slowly, therefore splitting time between working from home and at the office is ideal. However, whether you are required to go back part- or full-time, there are skills that can be effective for social anxiety, which many people are experiencing as a result of quarantine. Breathing techniques are extremely effective for regulating the nervous system. My favorite is the 4-7-8 breathing technique, which involves breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. This particular breathing pattern focuses on reducing anxiety and can also assist with sleep. Another tool is constant check-ins and self-evaluation. Tune into your thoughts and physical sensations throughout the day. Name what you are feeling. If you are anxious, notice what the anxiety feels like in your body and say to yourself, “My heart is beating faster. My throat is closing. This is anxiety.” Oftentimes naming our internal experience will get us out of the spin effect that the mind creates. It allows us to find the space between the stimulus and response.

74

Boulder Lifestyle | September 2021

The only thing I really loved about the pandemic was adding back in more "me time." How do I maintain a healthy balance between work and social life? Kendra Miguez: For those that were fortunate to come out of the pandemic with a healthy mindset, it is important to hold onto the lessons gained from that experience. The time we were granted for self-care and ordinary moments was a gift and for many, it took a pandemic to slow down. Maintaining a healthy balance between work and social life means making yourself a priority—something that many people, especially women, have a hard time doing. There is always time for a hike, a yoga class or lunch with a friend. We just have to block off this time the same way that we would an important work meeting. The truth is we are better for everyone around us when we take the time to care for ourselves. So schedule time for yourself and track your threshold for connection. Tuning into your internal experience will allow you to know when to say “Yes” and when to say “No.”

I feel anxious about being out and about in the world again, much more than I expected! Why do everyday tasks feel so overwhelming and exhausting? Kendra Miguez: Connecting with others takes a great deal of energy—particularly for those that are more introverted. There was a comfort to going inward that the pandemic provided. There was less room for mistakes and judgment. When we are alone, we do not have anyone reflecting back our image. These reflections that happen when relating to other people are information on how to adapt to our environment. Without that information, we can feel scared and out of practice. Learning how to interact with the world again takes a lot of effort, which can leave you overwhelmed and exhausted. As time goes on, it will become easier. It’s important to remember that it’s OK to take your time as you find a rhythm of normalcy. Be mindful of how much you put on your plate and know that you are not alone, which ironically may have been one of the greatest lessons of the pandemic.

STEPH MCCOURT, OWNER OF DENVER’S CONTRARIUM CHAINSTITCH, TALKS ALL THINGS SHOP AND CHAINSTITCH EMBROIDERY

ARTICLE EMILY O'BRIEN PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.

Boulder Lifestyle | September 2021

STEPH MCCOURT LOVES TO CREATE. Since elementary school, she’s knitted, sewed or crafted different types of fiber art. But when she happened upon her first chainstitch machine, she fell in love with the process and hasn’t looked back since. “The beauty of chainstitch embroidery is that it combines both tactile and two-dimensional media, so there is always room for improvement in both disciplines,” Steph says. Chainstitch, in general, is going through a revival throughout the country, especially in cities like Austin and Nashville. “The secret is out that celebrities of all stripes embrace chainstitched outfits for the red carpet, and I think that has only added to the growth of the industry,” Steph says. “As of right now, I think chainstitch is here to stay, as it shifts from being more of a novelty to a bonafide art form just like any other traditional fiber art.” She feels fortunate to add to the western-wear culture of Denver. Born and raised in the city, Steph never felt the need to move elsewhere. There are always new communities to tap into, a breadth of restaurants, museums and events, plus the mountains nearby to explore. In the summer of 2019, she founded Contrarium Chainstitch, which fulfilled her dream of opening a business selling handmade goods. The shop specializes in hand-cranked, vintage chainstitch embroidery services, where you can customize your own chainstitch project, or pick up limited-edition patches or jewelry. You can even book Steph to pop up with her machine at your next event to watch chainstitch magic happen right before your very eyes.

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

“Because my chainstitch embroidery machine is manually hand-cranked and not computerized, there is a world of potential for the garments and accessories I can customize. I currently release a limited-edition handmade patch design each week,” Steph says. She also works one-on-one with others to personalize any items they’d like, such as jackets, linens, bandanas and more. Contrarium is Latin for “the opposite” and its goal is to bring unexpected design and handcrafted techniques to this modern world. She wanted a name that captured what she says is her tendency as a person to go against the grain and explore different options than what falls within the obvious norm. Steph urges others not to be intimidated to work with a chainstitch artist to bring a bespoke idea to life and thinks it’s well worth it to incorporate pieces into our lives that are one-of-a-kind. Her favorite projects are those that are most meaningful to clients, even if it’s a simple freehand lettering project. “There has to be a level of integrity within everything I make,” Steph says. “I love being included within weddings, graduations and other milestone events! This summer, I customized a set of bandanas for bachelorette party gifts, and I currently have pet portraits for gifts in the works as well.”

Be A Good Neighbor MY NEIGHBOR FELIX BRINGS PAN-MEXICAN FOOD—AND GIANT MARGARITAS—TO WEST PEARL

ARTICLE ALLYSON REEDY PHOTOGRAPHY AMANDA PROUDFIT

MY NEIGHBOR FELIX, THE ENERGETIC PANMEXICAN RESTAURANT THAT OPENED ON WEST PEARL STREET IN APRIL, LIKES TO GO BIG. From the size of the space to the breadth of the menu to the 56-ounce (yes, 56-ounce) margaritas, Felix is the lively neighbor on the block. The one whose social calendar you’d schedule block parties around, and the neighbor whose style you’re constantly trying to emulate. Felix’s digs on the corner of 9th and Pearl Streets are appropriately cool, bright and airy. The restaurant is filled with lots of things that dangle, which might sound strange as a descriptor, but “dangly thing décor” works for Felix. Plants and lanterns hang from the ceiling and from dividers, and the combination of greenery, texture and multi-level curios makes for an eclectic, interesting space.

ANTIQUITIES WILDFLOWER NATION’S GUIDE TO DECORATING YOUR SPACE WITH A VINTAGE FLAIR

108 Boulder Lifestyle | September 2021

ARTICLE LIVIA HOOSON PHOTOGRAPHY POPPY & CO.

ELIZABETH PRENTISS HAS A WESTERN AESTHETIC THAT SHE DESCRIBES AS “VINTAGE-INSPIRED WITH AN ALPINE SENSIBILITY.” Her personal style is both feminine, whimsical and not-too-serious (picture pink-painted cabinetry with a vase of yellow flowers in her home). This Boulder-based artist has a love for interior design and unexpected home pieces that are expressed fully in her store located on 17th Street. Wildflower Nation offers small collections of past and present handmade treasures (joyful pieces referencing nature) that reflect the town’s local lifestyle and history. “Most of the yellow roses in the Colorado mountains are derived from the migration across the West, where pioneer women brought roots of rose bushes in teacups, tin cans and even sewn into their skirts for the journey,” says Elizabeth. ”While partial to native species, I absolutely love this dedication to floral beauty and the idea of a more winsome West.” As an environmentally aware curator, she avoids mass-produced pieces or disposable products, opting instead for limited edition collections that create a personal connection. “I am striving to get to a place of celebration of the old and zero waste of the new,” she shares. As the turning of seasons, from summer to fall, Elizabeth shares three vintage themes to inspire our spaces.

cot t age CORE

With the arrival of spring, Elizabeth focused on the perceived simplicity and romantic idylls of a life connected to the land. She sourced collections of vintage crocks, floral enamel trays and specialty glassware that look especially stunning against floral arrangements and vintage French plant stands to complete the look. “When I introduced more vintage items at the shop and online, people connected to those pieces immediately, especially our collection of Royal Porcelain pitchers,” Elizabeth says. “I believe these pieces feel simultaneously fresh and historic, eschewing mass manufacturing,

and

societal

disconnect.

When you look at them, you want to go gather flowers and be in the great outdoors.”

midnight CABIN

For this fall and winter, Elizabeth created Midnight Cabin, a collection that applies the Cottage Core aesthetic to our own aspirational living spaces—alpine cabins. To achieve this aesthetic Elizabeth reminisces on being cozy in a snow-covered chalet on a lazy Sunday. Picture hand painted Tole trays with wildflowers, collections of old trophies and pewter serving pieces, black gingham napkins made from deadstock fabric and whimsical hand-knotted grizzly bear rugs. She applied her own take on the classic mounted antlers by working with a Colorado artist to paint and wool wrap the antlers for a more playful look. “It’s all about finding pieces that feel intimate and sentimental,” she says. “Vintage does that naturally because it offers history and soul, and is naturally the opposite of bland conformity. So my advice is, trust your gut and go for how things make you feel. If you love a piece, you will always find a place for it.”

summer CAMP

For this style theme, Elizabeth focuses on objects that help you feel connected to the past with a modern sensibility. “Summer camp was a childhood highlight, so ask how you can bring that joy into a home,” she says. “For me, this included repurposed vintage quilts as sleeping bags, elevated leather camp stools and the most vibrant outdoor dartboards.” Elizabeth sourced collections of brightly colored vintage ice buckets, depression-era barware, cowboy glasses and vintage marshmallow roasters with Colorado ranch brands and accented with her Wildflower Nation blanket holders. "Nostalgia is one of the most powerful sentiments, so why not make sure you have something special in your home that sparks joy?" she says.
