The heat is on for outdoor eating Chilled cider could be the key to selling sausages!

It may sound like a strange connection but offering cold cider as a drinks option to go with the barbecue is a sure fire way of boosting sales.

Ciders complement the robust flavours of barbecue food and with traditional apple and newer pear and mixed fruit varieties there’s lots of choice on offer.

With a sizzling summer just around the corner now’s the time to plan your barbecue offering.

An event-packed summer ahead will give families numerous opportunities to eat al fresco so, with this in mind, you need to stock up on all those barbecue essentials.

It’s important that you keep good stocks of the core basics including burgers, sausages, bread rolls, baps and ketchups. A recent survey revealed that over half of all barbecue Customers chose sausages with 40% choosing beef burgers, proving that, whilst barbecue menus have become more sophisticated, the old favourites are still the Best Sellers.

With barbecue hosts and guests looking for a wellchilled, ready to drink option, Retailers should raise their glasses to refreshing cider!

There’s nothing to say that the vegetarian can’t enjoy the barbecue experience too, so make sure you stock a veggie option.

And don’t forget that when the burgers and sausages have been cooked and enjoyed, the sweet-tooths in the family will be ready for desserts like ice cream, gateaux and cheesecake.

Consider marketing your barbecue offering in one particular area with clear signage that whets the Consumer’s appetite.

Disposable barbecues are a must and make sure you have firelighters and charcoal for the really keen do-it-yourself barbecue enthusiast!

Be a winner with lottery terminals The National Lottery and the recently launched Health Lottery, can significantly enhance an Independent Retailers bottom line.

Figures show that Independent Retailers earned an average of £9,500 in commission last year.

With demand outstripping supply, if you’re interested in applying for a terminal for the National Lottery, Camelot has a selection process to determine which outlets will be considered.

Category Focus - Sports & Energy Drinks A fantastic 29% of all soft drinks sales come from Sport & Energy drinks and, as well as being the fastest growth area, the Sector will drive future soft drinks growth.

With this in mind you should make the most of the Category and make sure your shelves remain well-stocked to take advantage of the event-packed summer ahead where Sport & Energy drinks will be in high demand.

Remember that a Customer only spends on average seven seconds choosing what to buy, so help them find what they want as quickly as possible to maximise sales.

Relaxation hits Retailers The Government’s relaxation of Sunday Trading Regulations, for an eight-week period around The Olympics, will hit small Independent Retailers.

Trading between 10.00 and 18.00 on Sundays.

Relaxation of the Act means that Supermarkets will be able to extend their Sunday opening hours for a two-month period from 22 July.

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 states that shops over 280 square metres in England and Wales are restricted to six hours of continuous

Speaking prior to the proposal being confirmed, James Lowman, Chief Executive of the Association of Convenience Stores said: “Any

relaxation, even just for London during The Olympics, would erode our existing, popular Sunday Trading rules.”

Mr Lowman added that the temporary concession could open the door for the big Retail lobby to press for all sorts of exemptions for other events such as Christmas.

Small Independent Retailers are being urged to lobby their MPs to get the temporary changes overturned.
