to inspire people to live a healthy sustainable lifestyle.

“The children were really keen to get involved in some Love Food Hate Waste events, so we’re arranging cookery sessions to develop their life skills for when they leave foster care.�

There are up to 270 children in foster care in Barnsley, and the Association consists of 105 Barnsley council foster carers and 65 independent foster carers, who provide the youngsters with a loving and stable home environment.

Wayne Jones, Chair of the Association of Barnsley Foster Carers, said: “Our young people are legally GHÂżQHG DV DGXOWV WKH PRPHQW WKH\ WXUQ 18 and have the choice of ‘staying put’ with their foster carer until 21, or going to live independently in the real world.

This can be a really scary time for them. “The biggest challenge is learning to fend for themselves, so workshops like this are vital in showing them how to create nutritious meals while making sure they have enough money to pay the bills,� he added.

As part of our commitment to give back to the local communities we serve, our Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) contract has launched its ďŹ rst funding pledge to projects.

Shanks has chosen the schemes that are educating and supporting the community or environment.

BDR Manager Beth Baxter, Head of the Community Liaison Group, David Packham, and Contracts Director for Shanks, Colin Fletcher, faced the difficult task of whittling down 17 applications to select the worthiest recipients of the ÂŁ6,000 funding.

The patches have a great turnover of fruit and veg, which is passed on to a local food bank at the Salvation Army.�

SURF’S UP CHAPS! A trio of volunteers picked up some good vibrations when they descended on a local beach to help clean up the litter-strewn sea front.

It was more chilly and breezy than California Dreamin’, but ‘beach boys’ Colin Walker, John Stanbridge and Paul Wetherell were happy to brave the bracing sea air on the North Walney shore to join their partners from the Furness Waste Consortium.

Some interesting finds have turned up over the years including a recycling box from Cornwall, a sonar device washed up from Dublin and a rare breed of Kemp’s ridley sea turtle from the Gulf of Mexico. “It was a great time to reconnect with nature and support the work the Consortium is doing,� said Colin.

The trio even got to ride de the dunes in style, hopping on an amphibious ious hovercraft to travel the length and breadth of the 11-mile beach front.

Youngsters had a ‘welly’ good time on an exclusive VIP preview of our Derby waste facility

A group of local schoolchildren were the ďŹ rst to get an exclusive backstage tour of our growing Derby and Derbyshire Waste Treatment Centre.

Pupils from Village Primary School’s eco-club got to see how waste will be managed in their local area from 2017.

The 13 environment enthusiasts got a behind-the-scenes insight at the Waste Treatment Centre to learn how the technologies will work, and they picked up more than they bargained for. “The site is really muddy while construction is going on, so even though everyone had protective clothing, not everyone had wellies‌ the mud got everywhere!â€? admitted Waste Education DQG 0LQLPLVDWLRQ 2̇FHU (PPD 5D\

The 7 to 11 year olds were talked through each part of the site and were impressed with the giant ACC fans they walked underneath, which are similar in size to plane engines.

MARVELLED “The children got to walk right underneath them. They are massive but probably seemed even bigger from their height,� said Emma.

The youngsters also marvelled at the giant cranes that have helped put the stack in place and were shocked to discover that a pile of bricks and rubble was in fact home to the resident lizards. “They really enjoyed it. We asked

them to write down their favourite part and they got to keep the pencil, which was, of course, made from recycled material; old CD cases to be precise.�

COLLABORATIVE Village Primary is part of the eco-school collective, where teachers and students work collaboratively to support their environment to achieve bronze, silver and, ultimately, green eco status.

The children reported back to the rest of the school on how the site will work.

Emma said: “The eco-club is a group of elected pupils and they have the opportunity to shape the policy of the school. We hope after their visit they know more than when they arrived and spread the word of what we’re doing.�

YOU’RE RECORD BREAKERS A record number of you took time to complete this year’s PULSE survey, giving a great insight into how you feel as a Shanks employee.

The group-wide questionnaire gave colleagues a unique opportunity to give feedback on what works well and areas that need improvement. And 86.1% of you did just that in January. “The Municipal response rate was the highest of the four divisions across WKH JURXS ´ VDLG +HDG RI +5 0DUN Cowan. “This gives us the opportunity to fully understand how our people are feeling and take steps to make Shanks

an even better place to work.�

Although the full results of the anonymous responses won’t be available for a few weeks yet, a number of lucky participants have received a token of thanks already.

Set on the River Nith, Sanquhar is only accessible by one road and involves a 60-mile road trip, while its sister site in Beattock requires a 38-mile round trip for collections.

Our royal seal of approval Few among us can say we have had a visit from the Queen, but our BDR team warmly welcomed her delegated representative to ofďŹ cially open their site.

Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, was joined by council representatives, including Council Leader Sir Stephen Houghton CBE and our Group Chief Executive Peter Dilnot, to mark the launch of

our pioneering waste treatment facility, which is partnered with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils.

Mr Coombe, a chartered accountant and lawyer by trade, also served in the Territorial Army and supports many charities based in Yorkshire as a trustee, including St Lukeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospice. He has a keen interest in building community cohesion.

Dogsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dinners for Duke and Dawksey key to Crufts glory bid Drop in to Susan Scottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s every chance youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be overwhelmed by the delicious waft of gourmet food cooking on the hob.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highly likely our management DFFRXQWDQW ZLOO EH DGGLQJ WKH ÂżQLVKLQJ touches to a hearty meal of minced chicken with salmon oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic and tripe.

But before she is compared to our very own version of Nigella, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth pointing out that the delicious grub isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t for herâ&#x20AC;Ś itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for her dogs.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because her two Rottweilers, 11-month-old Duke and 22-month-old Dawksey â&#x20AC;&#x201C; who weigh in at a combined 90kg â&#x20AC;&#x201C; are her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;little babiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

When sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not processing journals or acting as an Agresso guru in Cumbria, Susan doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bat an eyelid at travelling the length and breadth of the country to enter them in competitions. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a big commitment but I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change it for the world. My husband Adrian and I have spent more than ÂŁ1,000 on operations for Dawksey, who had joint and eye problems when we adopted him five months ago,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also bought a van, which weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kitted out with cages so the dogs can travel in style and comfort when we go to shows.â&#x20AC;?

When they are not out on the road, Susan spends hours preparing the gourmet-inspired

food to make sure Duke and Dawksey are well-nourished and looking tip-top for their weekend competitions.

PAMPERED â&#x20AC;&#x153;Both dogs eat raw feed,â&#x20AC;? Susan VDLG Âł$ ORW RI GU\ IRRG KDV DUWLÂżFLDO ingredients, so I give them the minced chicken and tripe with salmon oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of a concoction really but packed with nutrients.â&#x20AC;?

The pampered pooches can even count water aerobics as one of their weekly pastimes, as doting Susan also takes them to hydrotherapy sessions at a dedicated animal swimming pool to enjoy some low-intensity exercise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rottweilers are renowned for developing joint problems in later life, so the hydrotherapy is a great way to keep them in shape while not doing any damage. Dawksey is a natural swimmer, but Duke causes a bit of a splash,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Duke has caused a bit of a splash in the dog show arena as well as the pool, sweeping up top prizes at championship shows in Yorkshire, Manchester and Edinburgh, and landing himself a place at the prestigious Crufts dog show later in the year.

Susan said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Getting to Crufts is a fantastic achievement, especially as he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t had much experience.

Whatever happens on the day, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be proud of him because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the taking part that counts!â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s this trademark positivity that makes Jonny such a wellloved member of the HWRC team, always eager to help the hundreds of customers that pass through their gates on a daily basis.
