SOUTH EAST DUO WINS STATE SELECTION Ph: 08 8724 7111
They’re good mates and they are now embarking on their first State cricket journey together – Kaidyn Weber and Hamish Case – are the two South East representatives and two of only three regionally based players, to be selected in the 2017 SAPSASA State Boys cricket team. They train side by side as part of the Chappell Whitty Academy and are part of the Lower South East SAPSASA cricket team.
KAIDYN WEBER Twelve year old Kaidyn Weber has recently been named in the 2017 SAPSASA State Boys cricket team and he has a plumber to thank. Kongorong stalwart Tom Glynn was digging ditches at the Weber family property when he asked Kaidyn if he would like to go and play cricket for Kongorong and the rest, as they say, is history. That was four years ago and after coming close in 2016, Kaidyn has made the grade in
2017. A session at the Jason Gillespie Centre, last year, under the tutelage of former State and Australian cricketer turned respected coach Andrew Zesers and Zesers suggested Kaidyn could well be bound for higher duties. He was not selected in 2016 but he did earn a spot in the 13 man squad for the national championships in Barooga, New South Wales, from January 5-12 next year. An allrounder, Kaidyn expects to bat in the middle order and bowl at first change in the State team and is looking forward to the challenge of playing at the next level. The Allendale East Area School Year 7 student loved his time at the Kongorong Cricket Club but has made the switch to Mil Lel for the 2016/17 season as there are more trainings and the opportunity to play a senior level – a weekly requirement from the State power-that-be. In his first senior game, Kaidyn showed he was right at home taking four wickets with his medium pace bowling. Somewhat surprisingly for a young player, Kaidyn loves Test cricket and has been to a match at the Adelaide Oval. He has also been to a couple of Big Bash contests, which he still enjoys. “But if I had to choose, I would choose Test cricket,” Kaidyn said. Aussie cricket captain Steve Smith is his favourite player.
HAMISH CASE His father Heath Case has long been a fixture at the Yahl Cricket Club, so it is hardly surprising that Hamish took up the sport – he has been chasing cricket balls and taking part in backyard games for as long as he can remember. And the Year 6 Tenison Woods College student has now seen all his hard work come to fruition with selection in the SAPSASA State Boys cricket team heading to Barooga, New South Wales, in January 2018. Hamish has been playing cricket for five years and is pursuing his passion at school as well, as part of Tenison Woods College High Performance Academy. An allrounder, Hamish looks set to bat in the middle order for the SA team, and then utilised as a first or second change fast medium bowler. “I really like watching Steve Smith for his batting and Josh Hazelwood for bowling, especially the way he gets through the crease,” Hamish said. Hamish survived four trials to make the final 13 and has full weekends now as he plays junior cricket for Yahl, as well as being part of the B Grade side, where he is holding his own. Both Hamish and Kaidyn could also earn some games with the Glenelg Cricket Club Under 14 team to keep an eye on how they are going in their own age group but at a more elite level. Aside from his club training, Hamish is also putting in around three hours a week on his own in the nets as he continues to work on his skills. Above - The two South East State cricket representatives - Kaidyn Weber (left) and Hamish Case (right).

WORROLONG GARDEN OPENS ITS GATES FOR CHARITY Maria and Keith Seiler have lived here at their Worrolong property, Wahroonga, for two decades but only in the past five years have they really
started to dedicate time and energy to the garden. It is a garden focussed on sustainability, with recycling and repurposing a key theme throughout.
And that starts from when you enter the property - the timber fence that fronts the property is milled from trees on the property and painted with sump oil to preserve it. The old Bedford truck was acquired from one of the Flett family farms. “It was just sitting under some cypresses doing nothing so Maria enquired about it,” Keith said. “Now it sits proudly in our driveway.” And that is a story repeated for a number of the features throughout the garden. “The shed, originally from Mumbannar Showgrounds, was the gun club shed, and we modified it into a garage to house a relic Dodge, which came from Yallum Park, as does the Dodge in the front paddock under the tree,” Keith said. The driveway is lined with agapanthus, dug up from the Oaks Nursing Home, when it was renovated, and as you continue down the driveway the hay wagon came from Dismal Swamp.” The trend of reclaiming and recycling dominates the garden and that story even rings true for some of the plants. “A lot of the plants are dug up by Maria from other people’s places ,or given to her, and she then lovingly brings them back to good health,” Keith said. The rotunda was built by Keith using timber from the property and recycled iron for the roof and walls, while the pavers are also a find from the Oaks Nursing Home. The garden boasts a tribute to the ANZACs with a cross, crafted from reclaimed sleepers, and Gaillipoli roses, planted by Maria, along with self seeding Flanders poppies. The gabion curved wall was built by Keith, while Maria carted home boot loads of rubbish bricks to fill it, with reclaimed timber then used to add the seat. The two carts that sit behind this came from a property out of Morgan. The round gabion wall at the rotunda is filled with iron stone that was dug up when putting posts in for the rotunda, topped off with an old broken legged table top. The tree house Keith built using reclaimed timber and metal and again it was Maria who carted home boot loads of rocks to build a dry creek bed underneath. “All the stone around the gardens Maria has brought home via

the car - as she does with everything,” Keith said. The green cart came from Plants on Sturt and Maria has turned it into a milk cart using old milk cans and planted with snow in summer to look like spilt milk when in flower. The gypsy wagon was built using milled timber from property and reclaimed windows and iron, with op shop treasures also on show. Around the back the cream cottage was the original Rocla Pipes lunch shed, while the other green building was Rennick Log Truck weigh Station Office. On the side of this building their daughter painted the Lone Soldier, while Maria planted RSL roses and the black huecheras, with white wisteria covering the front. The Methodist Church front entrance came from Glencoe and Maria planted roses around it, the Seilers also pout in a duck pond and decking and their oldest daughter was married at this stunning location. Bearded irises, roses ,salvias, agapanthus geraniums, hundreds of bulbs daffodils, irises, gladiolis, nerines, veltheimias, and lilliums are the flowers that dominate the garden while maples, Dutch Medlar, ornamental pears, birches, flowering cherries are the prominent trees. As with all gardens, Wahroonga is an ever evolving project for both Keith and Maria. The garden is open from 10am to 4.30pm this Saturday and Sunday and proceeds go to the Cancer Council and the Special Olympics, raising funds for local athletes to head to the national in April next year.
STAND LIKE STONE FUNDRAISER IN PENOLA
The Penola Coonawarra Wellbeing Sub-fund of Stand Like Stone Foundation has been active for many years, raising more than $60,000 along the way. All funds raised for the Stand Like Stone Foundation are invested and the interest raised from such investment is gifted to eligible community groups and individuals in the way of Community Grants and Scholarships. Movie nights, held every thrree months, have been a staple of the Penola Coonawarra Wellbeing Sub Fun’s fundraising efforts, while this year’s $24,000 raised by the community for Swinging With The Stars contestant, and eventual winner, Amanda Flint (pictured), was proof the community continues to support this unique foundation. “The support of the community was overwhelming and it just reinforces how supportive and encouraging our township is when it comes to investing in ourselves,” Amanda said. The Swinging With THe Stars winner has joined the sub fund committee, working alongside Rhett McDonald, Mark Edwaerds, Annette Balnaves and Janet Brodie. The sub fund is hosting a fundraising evening on Friday, November 17, with a Pop Up Bar in the Never Too Old building on Church Street, Penola. Coonawarra Vignerons have sourced four cellar doors who will be showcasing their wines, with wine available by the glass, local songbird Nicole Lear will play and Devine Café and the Penola Primary School Parent Club will cater. Doors open at 5pm. Cost of entry is $10 per adult and children are free. Adult entry includes a glass of wine or bubbles. One hundred percent of the entry cost goes directly to the Stand Like Stone Foundation to start the fundraising efforts of the 2018 entrant for Swinging with the Stars. The Stand Like Stone Foundatsion is set to gift its one millionth dollar this year across the Limestone Coast.

IN THE GARDEN With the late start to spring and its up and down days we are running madly at the moment with the lead up to Christmas coming way too soon. Yes, Christmas is just around the corner.... Sorry, someone had to say it.....but with less than six weeks to go, it’s time to start getting those Christmas thoughts together. It has certainly been an interesting year weather wise and the spring moisture will allow us to continue with good plantings up to Christmas and beyond...hopefully, it would just be nicer if the winds would disappear. This spring we have been busier than ever, and being the largest nursery in the region, and only nursery in Mount Gambier, we have almost completed our expansion of the Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the business and the new gift shop area is packed full of ideas for the gardener, non-gardener including the popular Burgon and Ball Tools from the UK. There is still plenty of stock arriving between now and Christmas, so call back frequently as its forever changing, of course, with all of our shipments of garden giftware, outdoor furniture, birdhouses, wall art and much of the ranges I found on my travels. Our huge pre-Christmas sale starts today with up to 70% off giftware, glazed and terracotta pots, wall art, statues and ornaments and water features. With reclaimed teak birdhouses from India, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming.
By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant Remember, too, that much of our stock is handpicked from small batches made by developing and poor countries, so many items are one offs and we will never have them again. A great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them. The Pot Shop section is still undergoing a transformation with a new container of pots just landed and being added to the new sales area as the days roll on more and more Christmas stock is being put out. You can lay-by now for Christmas and leave picking up until as late as Christmas Eve if you wish. A new shipment of A Grade teak outdoor furniture with added bar settings, four person settings and a whole new outdoor/conservatory range has just arrived and the website has been updated, too, with all of the current furniture additions including anew high pressure laminate table from Belgium which looks ultra slick and some new ceramic table tops in a timber look in two shades. Our 2018 range of outdoor tables in travertine and marble, cast aluminium, PVC, German wicker with three year warranty, Teak is, of course, the premier outdoor furniture timber, with high oil content and has a lifetime warranty. A new shipment of Kubu (real wicker) has just come in too and we have added to this range a two seater bench to add to our already comprehensive range of garden benches, trees surround seats and outdoor swing seats. These blend well with our own imported

BUSINESS SUCCESS STORY COMES OF AGE To survive in business for 21 years, you have to be doing something right and when you see the messages of support and congratulations on Di’s Gifts & Flowers facebook page, it is clear owner Di Williams has definitely done something right. Buying an existing florist and gift shop 21 years ago, Di put her name to the Penola business and while it was a steep learning curve early on, she has found her niche in what is an ever evolving business. “I have been around so long now that I have seen some gift lines come back into fashion again,” Di said. “Some of the kids toys are also going around now for a second time.” But the beauty of the Church Street business, which was originally in one half of the current home of the Bendigo Bank, and now lives on the opposite side of Church Street, is, it has been a journey where no two days have ever been the same. “The lines of gifts are always changing,” Di said. “That’s what I think has kept me going and kept me interested – there is always something new.” Di was working part time at the town’s ANZ branch when she decided to throw caution to the wind and buy her own business. “My daughter was about to go to boarding school and I wanted more hours and I was getting less,” Di said. “I had always had in the back of my mind that I would like to do something for myself and this was too good an opportunity to pass up.” Her banking background, and doing the books for the family business, meant she felt a degree of confidence with the business side of running her own retail outlet, but she admits her flower arranging skills were minimal. “I used to always have fresh flowers at home but I didn’t have any formal experience in flower arranging and so I had to quickly learn,” Di said. That being said, Di’s grandmother was a crafty lady, heavily involved in those type of things at the CWA. “I always knitted and crocheted and those sort of craft things so I had a bit of a background that helped.” Di stayed at the shop’s original site for three years before the need to expand and her love of the building she now calls home lured her across Church Street. “The Balnaves family did up the building and every time I would walk to the post office I would think how much I loved it,” Di said. So again, she took the calculated risk and it clearly paid off, as she not only filled the new. Larger premises but expanded to the shop next door once it became vacant about two and a half years later. “I knew the archway was already there so we knocked out some gyprock and the shop expanded again,” Di said. “It was too good an opportunity to have that extra floor space.” It was a decision that allowed Di to expand her in store ranges. “Having more to look at, keeps people in the shop for longer and it gave me bigger scope for different ranges,” she said. In good news for all other business in Penola, Di believes the flow

of tourists through the town continues to grow and they are a major part of her clientele. Open seven days a week, Di said when she first started in business, you wouldn’t have opened on a Sunday but now it is one of the busiest days and you would be mad not to have your doors open. Di has had her challenges over the past few years, fighting bowel cancer and a recent hip replacement but she believes it is the businesses, she also runs her accommodation facilities in Penola, that helped her in those fights. “I didn’t have time to wallow in self pity,” she said. “I did think about getting rid of them but having something to focus on was great for me in the end.” Di is hoping to be back on deck at Di’s Gifts & Flowers more often soon. “I still really enjoy it,” she said. Facebook has
been her latest learning curve but she has certainly seen how social media can impact a business, while the availability of fresh flowers now, compared with two decades ago, is astonishing. The anniversary celebrations have also generated renewed interest, especially from locals. “People have been wonderful and there have been lots of lovely comments.” Never one to rest on her laurels, Di has also added a new innovation in 2017, setting up a Christmas Shop at 34 Church Street next to Windara Bakery. “We have so many wonderful Christmas lines and rather than jamming them into the shop, it made sense to set up a stand alone shop,” Di said. MAIDEN BARBER SHIELD CENTURY FOR JANTOSH Mil Lel is fielding an inexperienced line-up in the 2017/18 Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association but for skipper Craig Lock, moments like the weekend, when rising batting talent Josh Jantosh (pictured left edarly in his innings at the weekend at Frew Park) scored his maiden Barber Shield century, make it all worthwhile. The Mil Lel opener, survived some tight bowling early from the Roos to dig in for a well compiled 112, which included 10 boundaries. The ball, in general terms, though, had the better of the weekend, with Crouch Shield bowler Justin Lock taking 5/40 in his side’s clash with Penola, and fellow Crouch Shield player Clay Leckie, taking 5/38 for Kongorong. Jamie Moody was another bowler to claim a five wicket haul, taking 5/30 for Yahl in its clash with North Gambier. Isaac Mulraney secured the best figures of this round. The O’Donohue Shield (Under 16) North Gambier bowler took 6/8 as, for the most part, this weekend, the ball had the better of the bat.

Last Year, Adam Smith organised the ac.care Truck Convoy in less than a fortnight but the fundraiser still attracted 68 trucks and raised $12,500 in cash and toy donations for families doing it tough in the lead up to Christmas. That success ensured the trucks would hit the road again this year and on December 9, the Mount Gambier Family Truck Show, as it has been re-branded, will again be looking to garner the support of the transport industry and wider community to again raise fuds and collect toys for ac.care, as well as start a fundraising campaign for a Wall of Remembrance, which already has council backing, to honour drivers, diesel mechanics and transport company operators, with the Umpherston Sinkhole area near the Hoo Hoo Club’s harvester a proposed site. To participate in the convoy, which leaves Penola at 10am on December 9 and arrives in Mount Gambier at 11am, drivers must donate cash or a toy to the cause. Last year, the convoy head to the Blue Lake Golf Club but this year, with the numbers involved expected to be so high, organisers have organised the Mount Gambier Showgrounds as the end point for the convoy, with around 20 local small business setting up trade displays in the hall, and a raft of kids activities on offer. Entry to the showgrounds is a gold coin and those proceeds will also go to ac.care and the Wall of Remembrance. This year, Adam and his fellow organisers have generated interest from Portland, with one company already tipping in $1000 and the promise of 10 trucks, as well as Adelaide and Melbourne, with a Brisbane truck company looking to be part of the 2018 event. “As soon as people hear it’s for the kids and also the Wall of Remembrance, they can’t wait to jump on board,” Adam said. “It’s just so huge and people’s response has been fantastic.” To keep up to date with what is going on for the 2017 Mount Gambier Family Truck Show, head to their facebook page, and make sure you mark December 9 in your diary for a fun family outing to the showgrounds. This year, the majority of the convoy will head straight long Jubilee Highway to the showgrounds, with a handful of trucks and bikes taking the Commercial Street route.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR FOR 2017 HILL CLIMB The 2017 Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb looks set to be one of the best, boasting an international flavour for this first time, and again attracting capacity fields for both the classic event this Friday, and the two day main event this Saturday and Sunday. Driving a 1977 MK II Escort, Frank Kelly will go down in history as the first international competitor to tackle the Valley Lake event. The Irish driver is a You Tube sensation and has generated a legion of fans with his spectacular driving and airborne theatrics. Kelly has been brought to Australia to headline the 2017 Adelaide Rally from December 7-9 and the South East Automobile Club (SEAC) has been able to tap into his Aussie visit for this weekend’s hill climb. “He (Kelly) got talking to a couple of guys at Rally SA and found out about the Legend of the Lakes Hill Climb,” SEAC representative Stuart Pratt said. “We just had to take advantage of the car being in the country. The exposure we’re going to get from him post event will be amazing. It is going to be remarkable. The number of You Tube hits with his driving means we will get a lot of coverage from it.” Kelly will not only be one of the 140 capacity field but has also agreed to be a guest presenter of the variety of trophies on offer on Sunday afternoon at the pit presentation. Heading to the event for the 12th successive year, crowd favourite and three time champion Kevin Mackrell, driving his V8 4WD 260Z, will start the sentimental favourite for the event, having come so close to title number four last year before car trouble stymied his charge. his Subaru WRX to defend his title. Simon Evans, a five time Australian Rally Champion, adds even more quality to the 2017 field. Driving a 6L Ford Cortina Sports Sedan, Evans has a resume that includes a class win in the Bathurst 12 Hour, and he looms as a genuine challenger for the title. Graeme Alexander, in his Mitsubishi Gallant, is also part of the 2017 event, bringing some history to the event, having some the 1993 City of Mount Gambier Rally. “He has competed internationally with great success,” Pratt said. “The level of experience and ability in the top end of the field continues to grow and grow.” On the local front, Simon Feil (right) again looms as the most likely contender in his EVO Lancer, having finished in the top 10 on numerous occasions. Quiet achiever Damian Brand, in a Subaru, also looms as a local threat. “He is one of the consistent drivers that we’ve had at the climb,” Pratt said. “He is always there around the mark.” The usual courtesy bus will run between the start and finish of the hill climb during breaks, with Friday’s action starting at 10am and 8.30am on both Saturday and Sunday.
