Whale watching in full swing at Portland
The world’s most majestic creatures know it, and the rest of us are slowly catching on. Portland is the place to be in winter! These school holidays, if you happen to spot a southern right whale making its way through the wintery seas along Glenelg’s stunning coastline, you can go in the running to win a wintery weekend in the historic coastal city of Portland and the rights to name one of these magnificent mammals.
Glenelg Shire, Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism and DELWP are once again partnering to encourage whale watchers to log their sightings on the official whale sighting portal hosted on the SWIFFT website. In return, one lucky spotter will win the opportunity to name a whale recently spotted in Portland for the first time with distinctive white markings on its back, which is part of the South East Australian Southern Right Whale Photo Identification Catalogue (SEASRW PIC) Project.
The winner will also receive a luxury whale watching weekend for two in Portland, including two nights at the recently refurbished Annesley House with a three course degustation at Clock by the

Bay, along with a selection of the region’s freshest produce.
“This particular whale is new to our catalogue and displays some original and very distinctive markings which garnered the attention of many of Portland’s dedicated local amateur photographers,” DELWP natural environment programs officer Mandy Watson said.
“This individual is now included in our research on the recovery of the critically endangered southern right whale in southeastern Australia. It’s really helpful for our research if people go to the trouble of logging their sightings through the official channels.”
Glenelg Shire Mayor, Anita Rank, said whale watching continues to be a significant drawcard to Glenelg’s coastal communities over the winter months, and sightings this year have been consistent from very early in the season.
“Winter is the perfect time to get out and explore our spectacular coastline, spot a whale and win,” Cr Rank said. “Come for the day, bring the kids for a winter holiday adventure or plan to extend your stay and explore the beauty and many attractions of Portland and surrounds in winter.
“The foreshore is looking fabulous and local businesses are ready to welcome you with their warm hospitality after a day exploring our wild and magnificent natural attractions.”

Seven Limestone Coast towns in the running
Seven Limestone Coast centres are in the running for the 2022 Ag Town of the Year. Now in its fourth year, the South Australian Agricultural Town of the Year Award recognises South Australian towns excelling in agricultural practices and the flow-on effect they have on communities.
Millicent was a finalist in the inaugural competition in 2019 and Kimba was the 2021 SA Ag Town of the Year, taking out the title from a field of 59 nominations. There have been 54 nopminations for the 2022 eventt, including local hopes Beachport (pictured below), Bordertown (pictured above), Kingston Millicent, Mount Gambier, Mundulla and Naracoorte.
Minister for Primary Industries Clare Scriven said the program was an important showcase celebrating the wide range of innovative and world-class agricultural practices initiated and used across South Australia.
“Many South Australian towns punch way above their weight when it comes to either creating or maximising practical and advanced agricultural practices,” Minister Scriven said.
“Our regions contribute around $29 billion a year to the South Australian economy, with agriculture playing a vital role through local employment and business opportunities.”
The minister said that with 27 per cent of the state’s population living in the regions, the Ag Town of the Year award not only recognised South Australia’s primary producers but also highlighted the importance of the communities that support them.
“These communities feed into the broader regional and rural social fabric,” she said. “We believe it’s important to recognise the great resilience, creativity and strength of our regional towns and the award creates a perfect opportunity to do that.”
The public now have the chance to vote online for the nominated town they feel best helped grow primary industries and driven regional growth, with the five towns garnering the most votes selected as this year’s finalists. The town recognised as the South Australian Agricultural Town of the Year receives a sign for the town entrance recognising their achievement, a certificate and trophy presented by the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, a community event and sign unveiling to celebrate being named the 2022 Agricultural Town of the Year as well as a double page feature in SALIFE magazine and promotional videos and stories produced for them by Solstice Media.
