Tune in Friday mornings to SEN 1629am when M&G Hotel Group presents “Star Of The Week” with Tony Elletson event but soldiered on with the working dog auction and what an auction it was – making history as the first ever fully online working dog auction for the Casterton event and the second ever run by AuctionsPlus.

A new world record was set when Eulooka Hoover, a two year and 4-month-old male red and tan Kelpie from Edenhope sold for a national record of $35,200, as 12 bidders, placing 277 bids vied for the clearly, highly rated dog. The previous record was set at the Jerilderie Working Dog Auction in 2019, when a working dog sold for $25,000. The previous record at the Casterton event was $22,200.

And the records did not stop there with the $9050 price tag for a kelpie pup over three months also setting a new sale record. That was also a record not just eclipsed but smashed, topping the previous mark of $2800.

Long time auction supporter and respected kelpie breeder and trainer Joe Spicer somewhat fittingly was the man at the dais

with his dog Go Getta Vandal when the Working Dog Auction passed the three million dollar mark.

The auction also saw a new record average price for a working dog – the new mark being $7753.

The figures from the 25th Anniversary Working Dog Auction are a strong indication of just how far the auction has come from the inaugural sale, out the back of a ute, at the Casterton Saleyards, where $6000 was the total turnover and unsold pups were just given away.

Casterton Kelpie Association president Karen Stephens said it was an incredible result given the online auction was a first for the event in its 25 years.

“We really didn’t know how the online platform would go,” Mrs Stephens said. “But the results have simply been amazing with over 2800 online bids throughout the auction and 28,650 views of the catalogue in the two weeks leading up to auction day.”

The auction transacted a total of $298,000 across the 51 lots on offer, with 39 lots selling across an auction where 122 online bidders were active across the sale, with 38 of those walking away with a dog. In the final hours of the auction, more than 300 users were connected, which is comparable with AuctionsPlus’ weekly sheep and cattle sales. The strong bidding activity saw the auction stay open for an extended one and 40 minutes.

The auction ran for 10 days, starting on Friday, June 4 and Hoover’s new owner David Lee was happy with the new format as he takes his Edenhope bred dog back to North Eastern Victoria to join a team of 12 dogs.

Organisers do feel still holding the online auction has continued to keep Casterton front of mind as the Birthplace of the Kelpie and hopes are high a comprehensive 25 years celebration for the festival can be held in 2022, as well as another record breaking auction.
