SWINGING WITH THE STARS 2020 is your chance to jive See story page 3
Your chance to be a star Swinging With The Stars has been the Stand Like Stone Foundation’s major fundraiser since its inception in 2008 and for the first time in its history, the chance for anyone to be crowned the dancing queen is on offer. With the usual gala event, which was set down for next month, cancelled for 2020, along with the accompanying fundraising campaigns and events of the eight selected stars, Stand Like Stone Foundation CEO Anne Kerr said organisers were still keen to keep the foundation, which was set up in 2004, and dancing front of mind. “We are giving everyone the opportunity to be a star in 2020,” she said. “For the past 16 years the people of the Limestone Coast have “...it’s about saying thank you Limestone Coast and celebrating your kindness and courage...”
given to Stand Like Stone to enable the foundation to help others in our region with grants and scholarships. To us, that makes the community the real stars and we want to say thank you Limestone Coast.” This Sunday the 2020 version Streaming With The Stars - kicks off with Hype Dance Studio director Kim Cella live streaming a dance lesson on Interact Limestone Coast and Stand Like Stone Foundation’s facebook pages at 1pm. You can either watch live or download the video at your leisure to learn the moves. The dance of choice for this online challenge is the jive, with anyone from the community then asked to up load a video of their performance to the Stand Like Stone website by May 31, with a week of voting to follow before a June 13 virtual awards presentation, with people’s choice and other awards, as selected by judges Ben Hood, the 2015 Swinging With The Stars irror ball trophy recipient, Liz Rymill, last year’s winner and Kim Cella – clearly the qualified dance expert on the panel. “We are not asking for anything more than your time and a video of your dance moves,” Ms Kerr said. “Our judges will be looking for creativity, fun and fabulousness.” Voting will run from June 1 to June 7 with bragging rights on the line. Swinging With The Stars has raised more than $700,000 over its 12 year
history, with the 10 year anniversary in 2017, yielding the biggest windfall with $140,000 raised, including the, arguably never to be broken fundraising record of Grant Fensom (pictured left with dance partner Katherine Miller) who hit the $45,000 mark on his own. “It was such a good team effort with the fundraising,” Grant said. “I was definitely surprised by how much we raised in the end but the main thing is we now can buy our community bus. It was very humbling. “It is not easy to raise money when there are so many things out there to raise money for but in this community people dig deep into their pockets relentlessly to support these types of causes. It was an amazing effort by all eight stars.” And while the fundraising is on hold for 2020, the foundation is looking forward to a huge response to their Streaming With The Stars concept. “It’s a hard time for people in our community right now, businesses are hurting, people have lost their jobs and we are all more isolated than ever before,” Ms Kerr said. “Streaming with the Stars gives us the opportunity to help our community in a small, but hopefully fun way. It isn’t about raising funds; it’s about saying thank you Limestone Coast and celebrating your kindness and courage.”

Playgrounds across Mount Gambier re-opened last week giving young families a change to get back into the great outdoors. Council staff worked overtimew to ensure the more than 30 facilities around Mount Gambier were ready for visitors again, with new signage to reinforce social distancing, limits to the size of gatherings and hygiene requirements for those that wish to use playground and skate park facilities. City of Mount Gambier General Manager City Infrastructure Nick Serle said council was asking the community to continue practising good hand hygiene before and after use, keep the minimum distance and ensure no more than 10 people using any facility at one time. “To ensure these facilities remain accessible to the community, users must continue to do the right thing,” Mr Serle said.

WINDFALL FOR AIRSTRIP The Federal Government is better connecting remote communities with vital air services, with the Bordertown airstrip sharing in $9 million of funding under the Remote Airstrip Upgrade Program. Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the upgrades will help local communities maintain access to essential services. “The Bordertown airstrip which is used regularly by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, as well as local gliding clubs, will be re-sealed with the help of this $102,000 grant” Mr Pasin said. “Upgrades like this mean that residents will have improved connectivity to regional centres and increased access to essential services.”

Throwing down the challenge to young poets Fossil funding boost
The History Trust of South Australia is inviting budding poets in years 4 to 11 to participate in the History Trust’s first ever online poetry challenge. Originally part of South Australia’s History Festival 2020, which was this year postponed, the Poetry Takeover Challenge aims to engage young people with history and museum collections in a new and creative way – even if they can’t visit in person. Poetry Takeover Challenge participants will create a poem taking inspiration from the collections of the History Trust and other museums and galleries across South Australia. South Australia’s History Festival Manager Karen Blackwood said the theme of the Poetry Takeover Challenge is change which is now more relevant than ever. “The Poetry Takeover challenge provides a platform for young people to take some of the fascinating items held in the collections of South Australia’s cultural institutions and to interpret them through fresh eyes,” she said. The History Trust will publish Poetry Takeover Challenge poems in an online gallery and share across the History Trust’s social media. Every young poet who submits an original poem will be in the running to win one of six $50 Dymocks vouchers, chosen by a panel of peers. Community Choice prizes will also be decided online by popular vote. Entries close on Sunday, May 31, at 5pm. The Naracoorte Caves precinct has garnered a $290,000 windfall as one of two South Australian nationally listed heritage fossil sites to benefit from the 2019/20 round of the Australian Heritage Grants Program. The grant of $290,000 has been provided to improve heritage appreciation and accessibility at the Victoria Fossil Cave within the Naracoorte Caves precinct; and a grant of $160,000 has been provided to protect the Ediacara Fossil Site at Nilpena. Both projects will also receive a co-contribution from the South Australian Government. Member for Barker Tony Pasin (pictured) was thrilled to be able to announce the significant grant for the world heritage listed site as it looks to continue to develop the visitor experience. “This program helps build a strong sense of identity for many communities at the centre of National Heritage Listed Areas,” Mr Pasin said. “We want to ensure our places of national and cultural significant value are protected and maintained for their communities and for future generations.” Australian Heritage Grants fund projects that improve recognition, conservation and preservation of National Heritage List values, access to National Heritage List places, and enrich heritage values through better engaging the community. The Naracoorte Caves project
will upgrade site interpretation using technical innovation to deliver immerse and sensory driven visitor experiences. Visitor impacts on protected areas will be reduced through the use of animated visual sequences and soundscapes developed for use by tour guides which bring mega-fauna and the site’s values to life and ‘out’ from the protected fossil beds ‘into’ the managed visitor areas of Victoria Fossil Cave. National Parks and Wildlife Service SA executive director Mike Williams said the grants would really benefit heritage tourism in the State. “The grant of $290,000 for the Victoria Fossil Cave within the Naracoorte Caves complex will enable us to develop an immersive audio visual experience to complement the guided cave tour – and DEW will contribute an additional $90,000 towards this project,” Mr Williams said.
“We’re planning to develop animated visual sequences and soundscapes which will bring the megafauna fossils out of the protected fossil beds and into the visitor areas through the use of cutting edge technology – this will really bring our unique Australian megafauna to life. “It will also help us improve cave access for people with disabilities and to improve the whole experience for culturally and linguistically diverse visitors.” The project will empower visitors to become advocates for the conservation and protection of the Naracoorte Caves precinct and our unique Australian Megafauna. “The government is committed to ensuring our National Heritage Listed places continue to reflect the richness of our Australian heritage and continue to be recognised for their natural, Indigenous and historic values,” Mr Pasin said.

SET YOURSELF A FITNESS GOAL Setting a specific daily fitness goal is a great way to hold yourself accountable and stay motivated. Choose a couple of basic exercises like push ups or burpees and start with a lower number and work your way up to a end goal.
The value of volunteering can never be underestimated, the impact it has on the ground for local communities, both socially and economically is immense. Around 8.7 million Australians regularly volunteer their skills, services and time to improve the lives of those around them. Volunteers embody the best of what it is to be Australian. Volunteering is a key part of the bigger picture in our society, one that increases the strength, resilience and wellbeing of our community. Not only is volunteering a great community service – it also has enormous financial value - a value
estimated in Australians case to be $290 billion per annum. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes – from a casual “yes I’ll help” through to a regular gig with one of the many community organisations who work tirelessly to help those in need. Volunteers play a critical role in helping to shape Australia and build stronger and more resilient communities. This summer, on the back of a prolonged drought, our nation battled bushfires the equivalent of any experienced in our lifetimes. While the extent of these natural disasters were catastrophic one thing
remained unwavering; the role of our volunteers who were there in the line of duty. That is why volunteer week 2020 is so important. We have so much, this year, to thank our volunteers for. Of course, volunteering touches all aspects of Australian society, whether it be helping out with local sporting teams and land care groups, responding to natural disasters and emergencies, or helping local charities support some of our more disadvantaged citizens. While the COVID-19 crisis has left many organisations struggling for volunteers because of greater need and the fact that many volunteers have

THANKING VOLUNTEERS 2020 STYLE National Volunteer Week (NVW) is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers. At this uncertain time we feel that it is more important than ever to recognise and acknowledge Australia’s volunteers. National Volunteer Week ruins from May 18 - 24 with the theme “Changing Communities. Changing Lives”. The many events that are usually held during National Volunteer Week have been postponed or cancelled, however organisations are encouraged all organisations who wish to thank their volunteers to consider moving their events to an online format or acknowledge volunteers in different ways through social media or other digital formats. Wave Your Appreciation for Volunteers You are invited you to put your hand up and thank all the volunteers around Australia by waving a special smile of appreciation from your own home. Upload your wave photo to social media and share using the hashtags #NVW2020 and #waveforvolunteers, and tag Volunteering Australia. Volunteer Thank You Gifts and Merchandise Say thank you to your volunteers with high quality, volunteer-specific gifts, while supporting Volunteering Australia in advocating for the volunteering sector in Australia. As well as the hugely popular lapel pins we have pens, lanyards, post-it notes, eco keep cups, keyrings and much more! We have also added ‘V’ volunteer anniversary pins for volunteers who have volunteered for 5, 10, 15 or 20 years. Head to the Volunteering Australia website to choose your gifts. Looking for a virtual way to thank your volunteers? Through the Volunteering Australia website you can send a free online Certificate of Appreciation directly to your volunteer’s email.
ac.care - Committed to caring Volunteers are at the heart of the diverse work of regional agency ac.care to help ensure country people have a safe home, enough money to live on and strong, positive relationships. The organisation’s largest group of volunteers are the individuals, couples and families across more than 180 households in regional South Australia who welcome children with nowhere else to call home into their lives. “Our foster carers cared for 380 children and youths last financial year across the Limestone Coast, Riverland and Murraylands,” ac.care foster care manager Dani Atkinson said. “Providing a safe and stable home can transform the lives of vulnerable young people in state care and we hear remarkable stories of the impact our foster carers have on a daily basis – we cannot praise them enough for their contributions to young lives.” However, the agency always needs more people to join its network of foster carers to provide placements for the increasing number of children and youths in care. Although ac.care began more than 30 years ago in Mount Gambier with a focus on foster care, it has grown to offer a diverse range of services, with staff supported by dedicated volunteers committed to helping make a difference in people’s lives. “Thank you to our volunteers, who all make a wonderful contribution to supporting our mission, helping deliver services and caring for people in regional communities,” ac.care chief executive Shane Maddocks said. The homelessness programs delivered through the Mount Gambier Community Centre at 20-24 Ferrers Street are backed by a dedicated support team. Many of these volunteers gather weekly at the centre to help pack and distribute emergency food relief hampers for distribution to people in need of support. Meanwhile, other volunteers share their skills and knowledge through Adult Community Education (ACE) courses, providing opportunities for social engagement and empowering community members to maintain tenancies or develop employability skills. Volunteers also help with reception duties through to general maintenance at the Millicent Community Centre, which delivers a diverse range of services to the community, not only providing ac.care’s emergency and family support programs, but also acting as a Service SA agent for the town.
A further team of eight volunteers at Kingston South East are also active distributing emergency relief packages, as well as coordinating a second-hand shop to raise funds to support ac.care’s valued programs. “Our volunteers are an instrumental part of the agency and we simply couldn’t provide the range of services, programs and support we do without them,” ac.care adult learning and community services program manager Sue Watt said. Email care@accare.org.au if you would like to contribute to ac.care. Left - Committed to caring: Parents of four boys, Mount Gambier’s Nicole and Ian have also cared for 16 children for various periods of time over six years as foster carers in their Mount Gambier home. They now have two young girls in their care long-term. Nicole will talk about her experiences as a foster carer and answer questions in ac.care’s upcoming webinars this month aimed at encouraging more people to open their hearts and homes to young people in need of safe and stable homes. Visit accare.org.au for details.
Grant District Council - A big year for our volunteers The District Council of Grant is blessed to have a wide section of community involved as volunteers in around 140 organisations throughout the district, including those involved in sporting, charity, youth, environmental, educational, emergency services, history, art, seniors and progress committees. At this year’s Australia Day celebration, council had the pleasure of recognising a remarkable group of people for their dedication, courage and sacrifice in keeping our community, our region, our state and our country safe. They are the personnel of our hard working emergency services including volunteers of the Country Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Metropolitan Fire Service, SA Police, St
Johns Ambulance, SA Ambulance and Community First Responder teams. It seems a lifetime ago that CFS volunteers from the Mount Gambier and Kingsley CFS Groups gallantly undertook a record season of deployments to assist outside the District Council of Grant. More than 120 local CFS members attended deployments to New South Wales, to Bunbury in Western Australia, Wade Junction in Victoria, and to the Kangaroo Island Keilira, Nangwarry and Cudlee Creek fires in South Australia. Some members completed multiple deployments and it is remarkable to realise that our local CFS members completed about 18,000 hours away from their home area this season. They also attended day to day incidents including grassfires, fallen trees and motor vehicle accidents, many of which volunteers from the SES, MFS, St Johns Ambulance, SA Ambulance and Community First Responders also responded. The District Council of Grant has postponed its annual Volunteers’ Morning Tea, normally held in May at the Port MacDonnell
Community Complex. Council hopes that all volunteers in the district are coping with the extreme environment that we are living in at the moment and wants them to know that they arein our thoughts. It is hoped that an event to recognise the valuable contribution volunteers make to the District Council of Grant community, may be hosted later in the year. Thank you to the many and varied volunteers in our community. The District Council of Grant recognises the valuable contribution you make to our community and appreciates your ongoing commitment.
City of Mount Gambier - Volunteers have never been more important MAYOR’S MESSAGE TO VOLUNTEERS On behalf of City of Mount Gambier Council I wish to acknowledge the valuable contribution provided by volunteers across our city as we approach National Volunteer Week. The theme for 2020 is ‘Changing Communities. Changing Lives’ and indeed, our volunteers do change and shape our community and the lives they touch along the way. Even in these challenging times of COVID-19 the volunteers in our city continue to respond and support the community. We all know of people throughout our community who selflessly provide hundreds of hours of their own time to assist groups, organisations and associations to continue to prosper and I thank them for their efforts. At the City of Mount Gambier volunteers enhance our capacity to deliver services. At the Mount Gambier Library volunteers assist with the delivery of programming, re-shelving and transporting books to those who are housebound or in supported accommodation.
At The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex volunteers are critical in the installation and management of exhibitions, assisting with events and exhibition openings and cataloguing the collection. Meanwhile, our events volunteers lend a hand at civic events such as Australia Day and the Christmas Parade. We also thank and appreciate those volunteers who assist with the maintenance and ongoing development of the Valley Lake Conservation Park, the ReUse Market and our Youth Advisory Group members (YAG) who provide advice on our youth programming and lead the delivery of events and activities for young people. The ongoing dedication and selflessness of volunteers who go above and beyond to support our community benefits us all. During Volunteer Week we recognise that Mount Gambier continues to thrive thanks to the commitment of our many and varied valuable volunteers. We offer our appreciation to the sporting, cultural and service clubs, emergency volunteers and nongovernment organisations, each of which provide an invaluable contribution to Mount Gambier. As Mayor of the City of Mount Gambier, I am very proud of the work provided by volunteers in the City. Lynette MARTIN OAM MAYOR CITY OF MOUNT GAMBIER

A distastrous period in world history... I’m not sure how many of you have heard, but we are going through a really tough time in world history at the moment. In fact I would go as far as to say it’s the biggest crisis in world history. Obviously you all know I’m talking about the Melbourne GP who last week advised that people should not lick the left over raw cake mix off the bowl when making cakes. I can hear your collective gasps from my castle in Tanselvania. Not lick the cake mix off the bowl?! Oh the humanity. Can you think of a bigger crisis recently!? She went on to explain that many people think the risk is the raw eggs in the cake mix. She didn’t deny that there is indeed a risk with the raw eggs. Raw eggs can lead to salmonella which would cause significant abdominal pain and diarrhoea. I’ve got to be honest, I don’t even have to think about that one. I’ll take the salmonella, abdominal pain and diarrhoea as a perfectly acceptable tradeoff for that delicious cake mix. It turns out that the raw eggs are not as much of an issue as the uncooked flour. Here we were all thinking that there was no flour on our supermarket shelves because of some worldwide pandemic, but it appears that it’s actually due to kids demanding to lick the beaters. They’ve probably been selling it in unmarked packaging from behind the counter with the cigarettes. So what is the risk with the flour? Raw flour can harbour bacteria
like E.Coli. Flour is made from grain which is grown in paddocks. Animals can urinate or defecate on these plants causing them to become contaminated with E.Coli even after it has been processed. It’s not until after you’ve applied heat by baking the cake that the E.Coli is killed off. This is pretty disturbing information, don’t you think. I’m pretty disturbed that a well educated person, like a doctor, would think that the risk of a little E.Coli would have any impact on whether to lick the left over cake mix off the bowl. Just like the salmonella, E.Coli is a small price to pay for one of the most delicious substances known. Maybe that’s the key to the delicious taste. Has anyone ever done some tests to find out if E.Coli would make a nice addition to all of your favourite meals? The fact I now know there is a possibility of animal urine and faeces being in my raw cake mix honestly has no impact on my desire to lick that bowl. I couldn’t care less. I think it would be simply irresponsible to not lick the bowl and the beaters. Obviously it’s vital that you turn the beaters off before licking them. That’s a mistake you’ll only make once. I know I’m indicating that there is almost no risk that’s not worth taking for raw cake mix, but I do draw the line at getting my tongue cut up by a beater. But in an era when we are so conscious of the environment, we
simply can’t afford to waste that cake mix. That can’t be good for the environment. Surely it would lead to new holes in the ozone layer, extinct animal species, and widespread pollution of the world’s oceans. I for one won’t be letting that happen. I’ll be continuing to eat cake mix because I care about the environment. I’ll be honest. I think it’s perfectly legitimate to make the cake mix and not even worry about baking the cake. I do enjoy a tasty cake, but it’s nothing compared to the raw cake mix. I’m tempted to go make some now. This just goes to show you can’t trust everything a doctor says. We put a huge amount of trust in doctors, but they do let us down sometimes, and this is undoubtedly one of those occasions. They’re just people after all. I’m convinced we see someone with a white coat and we automatically assume they know what they’re talking about. When at a medical facility and dealing with a medical professional wearing a white coat, I imagine that they’re an Aussie Rules goal umpire from the 1980s. They used to make the odd mistake or two as well in their big white coats. Well I think we all know that I’m heading straight for the kitchen. If you ever hear of a local man who dies from raw cake consumption, you’ll know who it was. Email me at robbietansel@gmail.com if you have a good cake recipe.

Candlelight vigil heads online “It has always been as much about crating awareness as it has been the actual event.” Those were the sentiments of Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinec with the group’s usual vigil, set down for last Wednesday, moved online. The Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group organised the Virtual Vigil to remember all those that have lost their lives because of domestic and aboriginal family violence and was held at 5.30pm last Wednesday on the Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Facebook page. This candle lighting ceremony is part of a national event held on the first Wednesday of May each year to raise awareness of the impact of domestic and Aboriginal family

Local contractors put finishing touches to playground
Local engineering firm J & M Shanks was the successful tenderer for the supply and installation of a slide for the Domain nature playground in Millicent. The fully enclosed stainless-steel slide structure will come off near the existing cubby house on the hill and run 10.5 metres to the ground adding another exciting element to this play area. Wattle Range Council Mayor Des Noll praised the the quality of the project saying the Domain nature play was progressing well. “It is great to see a number of local suppliers and contractors being
utilised to complete the project,” he said. “The slide will be one of the last major components to be installed, followed by landscaping and tree planting by council’s staff and finally some seating to be added to the area to balance the play component with relaxation and reflection Once all of the works are completed a risk assessment will be conducted and the play space will be independently audited, to ensure that it has been built to Australian Standards. Council will then have great pleasure in proudly opening the facility to the public.”

violence on families and communities. For more than 10 years, the first Wednesday in May has been an occasion for Australians around the nation to commemorate those lost to domestic and family violence. Since 2016 Mount Gambier has held its own vigil led by Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group in conjunction with Soroptimist International Mount Gambier. “This year we were unable to meet together so we held this Virtual Vigil that proved to be just as meaningful and the message it sends be just as powerful,” Ms. Mezinec said. “We also followed the lead of the Adelaide Vigil and especially honoured the memories of our First Nations sisters and their children whose lives have been lost due to domestic and Aboriginal family violence, recognising that family violence has no place in First Nations cultures.” Ms Mezinec highlighted that current requirements of social and physically distancing and self- isolation have increased the risk for many women and children living with domestic violence. “During these times when many services are being delivered differently, it is important for women experiencing domestic violence to know that local services are operating” she said.
Thirteen women and three children have died this year due to violence – a small reduction from the 17 women in the same period last year but still too many. People showed their support last week by joining the Facebook Vigil, lighting a candle, displaying a white ribbon, white balloon or other symbols of meaning and shared photos using the hashtags #LCDVVIGIL2020 for the local Vigil and #VigilSA and #StandByUs that connected with others Statewide during the event. If you need of urgent assistance or are concerned for your safety please call please contact 000, 1800 RESPECT or the Domestic Violence Crisis Line 1800 800 098 for assistance and support.

Dairy education program goes virtual Calves are set to star on the small-screen this year as students across Australia learn and explore dairy industry careers in the virtual-classroom. A popular program in this region from right across the Limestone Coast, the new look program is still set to attract a high number of paticipants. Due to current restrictions, Dairy Australia’s popular Cows Create Careers project will be delivered via an online hub for Term 2, this year. The hub offers various curriculum options ‘Normal’, ‘Reduced’ and ‘Easy to Implement’ - so schools can choose the option that best suits their requirements. Each school is provided with dairy industry curriculum and ongoing support for years 7-11, at no cost. And while the students may not get a ‘hands-on’ this year, Cows Create Careers remains highly engaging through fun industrybased resources.

Students will take an online journey through Willbrae Farm where they will be introduced to two dairy calves, ‘Bright’ and ‘Future’. Over five weeks, students will find out how to care for the calves and watch them grow through engaging videos. Students will also learn about the environment, technology and machinery used on farm through quirky activities and competitions. As with all Cows Create Careers resources, the online program prioritises student learning and aligns with ACARA curriculum. Sally Roberts, Lead - People at Dairy Australia, said the 2020 online version of Cows Create Careers will continue to shine a light on the diversity of professional careers within Australia’s vibrant dairy industry. “Cows Create Careers allows students and teachers to learn about the different skills and capabilities required for a career in the dairy industry in a fun and hands-on way and this year will be no different, Ms Roberts said. “The benefits of Cows Create Careers extend well beyond the classroom; it supports links between students, teachers and the dairy community. Cows Create Careers showcases the wide range of education and career pathways within the industry and the skills and capabilities required. The program’s new online hub will continue to deliver these benefits through fun and interactive activities. Ms Roberts said the opportunity for online learning will continue to develop these important links thanks to the continued support of dairy industry volunteers who will be available to connect to the schools throughout the program. “Volunteers represent a wide-range of professional dairy careers. They speak to the

Cows Create Careers has a rich history. The popular project was originally established in 2004 with dairy farmers in the Strzelecki Lions Club in Victoria and nine Gippsland schools. Since 2006 the project has been supported by Dairy Australia, Regional Development Programs, dairy farmers and sponsors. In South Australia the program is supported by: DairySA, MaxCare Animal Nutrition, Hills Farm Supplies, Laucke Mills, SA Dairy Industry Fund, Total Result Ag Consulting, Beston Pure Foods, Willunga Veterinary Clinic, FP Ag, Fleurieu Stockfeeds, Fleurieu Pumps, Elders Rural Services, Fleurieu Country Vets, Yankalilla Seeds, Rotary Club of Victor Harbor, Victor Motorcycles, AgriDairies, Alexandrina Council, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Daish Irrigation & Fodder, East Total Reproduction, Bates Farm Machinery, City of Victor Harbor, Bendigo Bank – Aldinga Beach, G & J East (Strathalbyn), Compass Feeds, South East Vets, Mount Barker District Council, Platinum Ag Services, Dairy Tech SA, La Vera, Farmer Johns, Dasco, Daviesway, Skellerup and Peach Teats. This term, 110 schools will complete the project across New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. “We are excited the 2020 program can continue and are grateful to industry advocates and farmers who continue to volunteer their time to schools completing the program - they are vital to the ongoing success of Cows Create Careers, Ms Roberts said. And while they may be learning online, students will still have the opportunity to win some great prizes. Upon completion of the project students and teachers will be recognised for their success in the program. For more information visit: http://www. thepeopleindairy.org.au/projects/ccc2020

WHEN WE WERE KINGS 1996
On October 30, 1974, perhaps the most famous heavyweight championship boxing match of all time took place in Kinshasa, Zaire: the “Rumble in the Jungle” between champion George Foreman and challenger Muhammad Ali. In historical footage and new interviews, this documentary explores the relationship between African-Americans and the African continent during the Black Power era in terms of both popular culture and international politics, including the brutality of then-dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The film captures the overwhelming odds for Foreman to win and the courage of Ali facing seemingly impossible chances as he worked on his hand speed, endurance, poetry, and plotting his strategy. There is little doubt Ali came into the ring with a secret plan and the film captures the shock that swept through the commentators when George went to the canvas.

Applications are now open for slice of a $200,000 Community Development Fund pie. The fund, established by City of Mount Gambier following endorsement at a special Council meeting last week, is intended to enable community and sporting groups to undertake works at their facilities during current closures. The fund has two streams – one for minor works up to $5,000 and major works for projects up to $20,000, with the potential to increase the pool of available funding. “Council has discussed a number of responses in recent weeks and another of the many elements that has been pursued is the provision of quick access to funding for sporting and community groups so they can carry out repairs, renovations or improvements at their facilities during this downtime,” City of Mount Gambier CEO Andrew Meddle “Council intends to make decisions quickly on applications and will consider increasing the funding available should demand outweigh supply for the number of projects.” There is limited criteria in place, however preference will be given to applications that demonstrate use of local suppliers, contractors and Australian made materials. “The fund is expected to provide an economic boost to the community because of the need to source labour and materials locally,” Mr Meddle said. “This funding stream provides a quick response to our community to carry out improvement works to community and sporting facilities and as such it is an investment in our people, our economy and our recovery and enables us to use this hiatus in community and sporting events to our advantage.” Further information including the Community Development Fund application form can be accessed here: bit.ly/ComDevFund Above - South Gambier Netball Club players Halle Harvey (left) & Maya Clarke (right) with City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin (also pictured right cutting the ribbon) at the official opening last season of South Gambier’s new netball courts & shelter sheds - an example of a project partially funded by council using local contractors.

Champion Jockey Jim Cassidy is the ultimate colourful racing identity. In a stellar 38-year career, ‘The Pumper’ won 104 Group 1 races, including two Melbourne Cups - the first in 1983 on Kiwi, a $1000 farm horse, where Cassidy came from dead-last to win; the second a famous redemption ride on Might and Power in 1997. Brilliance in the saddle and bald-faced cheek in the press made Cassidy the Australian racetrack’s most beloved and controversial character. His horse whispering gifts, gambler’s charm and maverick wit always made him a favourite with the punters, trainers and journalists...but rarely officialdom. Cassidy’s fast life and uncensored opinions led to his exile after the Jockey Tapes scandal in the ‘90s. Broke but never broken, he fought back. And even when he was back page and front page news, Cassidy’s popularity never waned. As he’d quip in victory, ‘Ring-ading-ding, Pumper’s the king!’ Honest, heartfelt and often hilarious, Pumper is Jim Cassidy’s explosive autobiography - a page-turning thrill-ride through his many adventures on and off the track. AUTHOR INFORMATION Jim Cassidy (b.1963) is the third ever jockey to win over 100 Group 1 races. Born in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, he won the 1983 Melbourne Cup on Kiwi and the Caulfield-Melbourne Cup double in 1997 on Might And Power. He is a three-time winner of the Australian Derby (1990, 1993, 2009). He retired from racing in 2015. Cassidy has three daughters and lives in Sydney. Andrew Webster is chief sports writer for the Sydney Morning Herald. He appears regularly on TV and radio and has authored several books, including Supercoach: The Life and Times of Jack Gibson and 2014 bestseller The Voice: The Life of Ray Warren. Just what you’d expect from the master horseman they called Pumper: cheeky, funny, brash, unrepentant...a rollicking good read.’ Les Carlyon

The 2019/20 Borderline Speedway season was cut short with the club’s hosting of the 2019/20 SSA National Super Sedan Title the final time the dust flew at the Glenburnie track. The club has a proud history of hosting national championships and the Borderline Speedway, its committee, volunteers and facilities have received a huge wrap from Speedway Sedans Australia which bodes well for future national events to chose the Borderline Speedway as the host. Speedway Sedans Australia CEO Greg Lynd has been full of praise, going so far as to seek out feedback from Borderline officials as to how the sport should run going forward. “I have had the privilege to be involved with many, many national titles around the country but never in my time, although one ran fairly close, has one been delivered in an ease of management from the outset as this one, congratulations on a terrific job,” Mr Lynd said. “I must say a huge thank you for and on behalf

Any national title held at any venue is a massive task for all involved, as is week to week race meetings, and your crew never fail to deliver in every aspect.” Tasmanian Darren Kane (pictured above) took out the event joining the late Grenville Anderson as a four time National Super Sedan Champion and he concurred with the assessment of the governing body. “The whole weekend was great for the class, Mount Gambier as a track and complex is first class as for me I knew we would be a good chance if we could get through the heats unscathed,” Kane said. “I knew we had plenty of speed and as long as we never had any mechanical issues we were a good chance for a good result.”
