The accolades further cement Noel

Silver linings... I’m not convinced that this whole self-isolation thing is going to be good for me. I really don’t want to be alone with my thoughts. Quite frankly, it’s exhausting in my head. Last week I avoided talking about the coronavirus business, but I figure I’ve got to talk a little about it this week. Realistically, what else is there to talk about now? There is nothing else to talk about. Do you remember the last time you spoke to someone without talking about the coronavirus? One of the weird things is it feels like we’ve been dealing with it for months. Realistically it’s only been about a fortnight.

Courtney’s GE Masters Award ranks her in the top 20 performing Guest Experience Managers from across the 197 Toyota dealers Australia-wide. I sincerely hope that everyone is taking all of the government advice very seriously. Avoid people, keep a good distance away on the occasions when you have to encounter people by necessity (groceries for example), wash your hands regularly, and avoid Victorians at all costs. I don’t want to trivialise anything about the current situation as the health possibilities are horrific, and when combined with the effects it is already having on families, jobs, the ability to pay bills and the economic impact, it is clearly a dire situation. Having said that we all have to keep reminding ourselves that at some point there will hopefully be an endpoint where our lives get back to some version of normal. In the meantime we need to look after each other and do everything we can to help each other get through each day. We also need to try and find the light side of things where we can and pick out some positives. One thing I’ve already noticed is that in some ways I have more time available to me than I’m used to. My job normally involves organising a variety of activities that have now been cancelled. Another thing that consumed a great deal of my time was taking my children to their hundred different sporting commitments each

week. If I was lucky I might have a little time available to me for watching TV, particularly sport. There is essentially nothing on television anymore. I don’t know about you, but I spend a lot of time complaining about how busy I am and how I never have any time to do anything. We’re all going to find out what we do if we’re given that time now. But make sure you avoid people while you’re using that time. I’m thinking I’ll learn magic or something. A real positive for me is that I can avoid people I don’t like so much easier now. The government will fine me thousands of dollars if I visit my crazy family. I’m even telling them that I’m too scared of getting fined to talk to them on the phone. I’ve also told Donna I’m worried the police will get me if I take the rubbish out to the bin. I think I’ll still be able to use this whole self-isolation thing long after the pandemic crisis is finished. I’ll just tell people I’m still anxious after the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 and can’t bring myself to see them anymore. I think the best thing that will probably come out of this whole time is people understanding how lucky they are. Think of how lucky you feel when you happen to find toilet paper at the supermarket now. Two weeks ago going to the supermarket was lifestyle1.net | 06

drudgery and boredom, whereas when we get back to going to a supermarket with fully stocked shelves and no limits on what we can purchase, that’s going to be the most exciting day of our lives. Something that meant so little to us a couple of weeks ago will now be seen as the best day of our lives. How about our kids, who we’re always grizzling about not appreciating how lucky they are? I have no doubt they’re going to have a pretty good understanding of how tough life can be, and how lucky they really are in a couple of months. I wouldn’t wish this

as the way they work that out, but it will be a small blessing in the end. Anyway, keep in mind that we’re one day closer to the end of this saga, and we’ve never been closer to it finishing than we are right now. Be nice to people and take care of yourselves and others. If I can help in some way, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com and I’ll see if there’s anything I can do. I have no special skills or contacts, but I’d give it my best shot.

A total of $50,000 is available through this funding round. Community projects that address other key needs of the region are also encouraged to apply. OneFortyOne’s Willie van Niekerk said they were again fortunate to work alongside thier longstanding partner Stand Like Stone to support Limestone Coast communities. “The grant program has provided support for projects that provide real and lasting effects in our region,” he said. “It is more important than ever to ensure not-for-profit and community organisations are supported. We invite anyone with a project they think

It’s all about strengthening communities, addressing a need for more services.” Stand Like Stone CEO Anne Kerr said the value of these grants was immeasurable. “The lasting positive effects of these grants are clear,” she said. “What might seemingly be a small thing, such as funding for a community vegetable garden, upgrading a community hall, or providing school resources, all have a significant benefit to the wellbeing of the wider local community. The investment from the program goes a long way.” The OneFortyOne Community Capacity Building Grants Program is now open for community organisations, not-for-profits and schools to apply for a grant between $5,000 and $20,000. Mount Gambier Calisthenics College 50th Anniversary

d r i a B e Th Years

Leotards, leg tan, sequins, traditional national dress, perfectly coifed buns and apparatus never seen in other sports - calisthenics is definitely unique. An eclectic blend of dance and gymnastics, with a dash of marching band and baton twirling and everything in between, it is a time honoured past time that has been part of the Mount Gambier landscape for 50 years. It was a Victorian physical education teacher that brought calisthenics to Mount Gambier and that teacher – Judi Baird – was front and centre of the club’s anniversary celebrations earlier this month. Moving to Mount Gambier in 1970 with husband David and a young baby, Judi, so used to being active, was looking for somewhere to divert her energies while also integrating with the local community. “I discovered there were lots of activities for boys and men but not much for women and girls,” Judi said. So after doing something similar in her two years at Sale, before the move to Mount Gambier, Judi set up a gym club. It was housed in the Old Boys Institute Hall in Percy Street and saw the start of a lifelong friendship for Judi with then YMCA manager Dave Davis. Judi still catches up with Dave and his wife Marg at their Hahndorf home every year. “Dave was a very dynamic leader who happily embraced new ideas and volunteers in the YMCA and it was really a major community hub under his leadership,” Judi said. “Not surprisingly he is now the chief organiser at his retirement home, even though he is in his 90s.” The Old Boys Institute Hall hosted club was initially a gym club but that didn’t last long. “The girls found the gymnastics boring,” Judi said. “I started to add some calisthenics into it and the girls loved it and from that point on it was purely a calisthenics club.” In the early years Judi also ran a Ladies Get Fit class and a Mothers & Tots class, as well as the calisthenics classes which quickly started to gain momentum and after only a few years, participant numbers were almost at 200.

The club started its annual displays at the King’s Theatre in 1971 and the programs for those annual concerts have proven to be an invaluable historical resource, tracking class numbers, teaching staff, accompanists and disciplines that were showcased and Judi has a copy of every year, while she was part of the club. Of course, running a club with so many classes and students meant Judi, who over the course of the journey had three young girls, needed some help and she had a trio of helpers who became lifelong friends. “Liz Richardson, Pat Jones and Jan Brown, together with some of their daughters, became second mums to my three young girls and without their help I would not have been able to be as involved as I was,” Judi said. “I still love catching up with the two of them whenever I get to the Mount as sadly Jan is no longer with us.” And in terms of help, Liz, Pat and Jan were just the tip of the iceberg, with senior students and other volunteers taking up the teaching challenge, as well as a raft of pianists, who accompanied every lesson and performance during the early years. The late Liz Whelan and Glenys Bown headed the list of a raft of teachers that helped shape the Mount Gambier Calisthenics Club while the late Nell Ditcham, Doris Peters and Edna Mayell were the longest serving of what was a long list of accompanists before that modern invention – the cassette tape took their place.

“…I discovered there were lots of activities for boys and men but not much for women and girls…”

“…it was not quite as nice as what we were used to, but it gave us a home and we were so grateful…” “That was a big change but nothing compared to the computer driven musical creations used now.” The club also securing its own purpose built space in the YMCA was also a wonderful milestone with a large mirrored space with a storeroom for costumes and props as well, while the quality of the group was significantly boosted when South Australian State representative Kay Stevens moved to Mount Gambier and joined the seniors team for a couple of years, as well as assisting with teaching. Then came taking calisthenics from a fun, physical activity to competing. As with the original setting up of the club, where help came from Victoria rather than the South Australian state body, the Mount Gambier club competed at Victorian competitions, only heading to lifestyle1.net | 04

Adelaide once, where they scooped the pool and never returned. That was in 1979, when the club was graded quite low, given South Australian officials had never shown any interest in the club, and it brought home the senior aggregate and finished third overall across the State, despite entering only two teams, such was the quality of their results. The club did, however, compete regularly in Warrnambool, Geelong, Horsham and the pinnacle of competitions – Royal South Street in Ballarat. The significant milestones continued with the first Mount Gambier YMCA Calisthenics Competition held in 1981, attracting clubs from 12 other towns across South Australia and Victoria. Club run in its inaugural year, it then became part of Backstage Incorporated and the diverse eisteddfod program it now runs every year. The club enjoyed great success at the local calisthenics eisteddfods and in 1985 claimed its fourth successive overall aggregate win. And while competition classes became a huge part of the Mount Gambier Calisthenics Club, there was still plenty of time for fun. “We always wanted to still cater for those that didn’t want the pressure of competition as well as those who thrived on it – it was important both groups were a part of the club,” Judi said. The arts in Mount Gambier then received a huge boost with the opening of the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in 1982. “Our senior team was delighted to perform at the opening celebration,” Judi said. Tough times came only a couple of years later as new management took over the YMCA and the increased

financial commitment saw the club move to St Andrew’s Community Hall. “It was not quite as nice as what we were used to, but it gave us a home and we were so grateful,” Judi said. CONT. OPP. PAGE

Continuing the legacy

That move came in 1984 and in 1985 arguably the biggest upheaval hit the club – the departure back to Melbourne of Judi Baird. “Leaving was quite emotional as the club had become so much a part of my life,” Judi said. But her farewell, in the end was fitting, with her senior team, who had performed below par at the Royal South Street competition, found their mojo for their last performance under the guidance of Judi and won the Calisthenics Spectacular. “It was a very noisy bus ride home,” she said.

“…we always wanted to still cater for those that didn’t want the pressure of competition as well as those who thrived on it…” During her tenure at Mount Gambier, which was 15 years of calisthenics teaching, and once returning to Melbourne, Judi has been intimately involved in coaching and administration. She was a key driver in setting up calisthenics coaching accreditation and chaired the Australian Calisthenics Federation Coaching Committee for a number of years, as well as eight years in the Victorian Calisthenics Teachers Association. During her time in Mount Gambier she was also the first woman to serve on the YMCA Board in Australia. “From a distance I have seen many changes over the years but this club, now operating out of its own studio, continues to provide great opportunities for young people here and I wish them all the best for the future,” Judi said.

Judi Baird was the face of the Mount Gambier Calisthenics Club and now her legacy is in the hands of Belinda Butler, a life member of what is now known as the Mount Gambier Calisthenics College, who is one cog of a family that has been dedicated to the club for decades. She is also the driving force behind the March 14 50th anniversary celebrations that saw past and present members come from across Australia to take a walk down memory lane and celebrate 50 years of calisthenics in Mount Gambier. The college’s promotional team, that entertains at a number of community events, performed on the night, with students aged 9-24, with the view to showing the room just how calisthenics has evolved since its inception in this region in the 1970s. “We wanted a lot of the past members to see just what calisthenics looks like now,” Belinda said. In its hey day, the Mount Gambier Calisthenics College boasted up to 190 members and as of 2020 that number is 60, which is healthy in calisthenics

terms, especially when you consider how many past members have since set up their own clubs in the district. “There is more of a dance element to calisthenics now,” Belinda said. “As a sport it has really changed.” But that being said, if you were part of the early years of calisthenics in Mount Gambier, you would still recognise your life in a leotard - rods, clubs, marching and aesthetics exercises are all still part of the repertoire. As it was in its formative years, the club is still affiliated with the Victorian State body and competes in Horsham, Warrnambool, Royal South Street, in Ballarat, Echuca and Melbourne, as well as continuing to support the Mount Gambier Eisteddfod. The competition season traditionally runs from July until October, starting with the local eisteddfod. For Belinda, the Mount Gambier Calisthenics College is a family affair. She is following in the footsteps of her mother, Karen Shelton, who is in her 33rd year of her volunteer service with the club. “She has never had a year off,” Belinda, who has also been

part of the club for 33 years and along with her mother is the current longest serving member of the college, said. In fact, she has been treasurer or president for most of those years. Belinda’s husband, Nathan Butler, is also racking up the years of service, having been intimately involved for the last 17 years helping out, particularly with the technical needs of the club. “He helps me cut music together, drives the bus to competitions,

anything that needs doing really,” Belinda said. And the next generation of the family has started their calisthenics journey with daughter Zoe Butler part of the college and following the time honoured path of her family. Above - Three generations - Zoe Butler, Karen Shelton & Belinda Butler

INTERNATIONAL TICK OF

APPROVAL Mount Gambier-based mill NF McDonnell and Sons is taking its safety to global heights, becoming the first Green Triangle business to achieve internationally recognised Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) certification.

Global-Mark, a nationally recognised Conformity Assessment Body, audited the timber processor’s operations against the highest global standards and granted the company ISO 45001 OHS Management System, an international level certification for its efficient safety management policy and procedures. NF McDonnell and Sons work health safety manager Richard McLoughlin, who led the certification process, said it was important for the mill to surpass Australian standards to provide the highest level of compliance for the health and safety of its 115 staff. He said the operation was the only business in the Green Triangle, and one of only 1045 workplaces nationwide, to achieve the globally recognised certification, which was

first introduced in 2018. “Continual improvement is a primary focus for the mill and safety is priority number one,” Mr McLoughlin said. “This international certification was a key objective of our five-year strategic plan which sets a pathway to becoming a more sustainable and efficient operation. We are pleased to be able to deliver these world class safety standards for our hardworking and dedicated staff only two years after it was included in the plan. This compliance reinforces to our entire workforce that safety is at the core of our values as an organisation. It’s their health and well-being that drives our work plan.”

Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub (GTFIH) executive general manager Liz McKinnon praised the mill’s focus on gaining international certification, noting safety was a key pillar of the Hub’s strategic action plan. “Creating and sustaining a culture

of workplace safety is pivotal to the success of the Hub’s vision to grow a vibrant and sustainable forestry industry in the Green Triangle,” Ms McKinnon said.

“One of the pillar’s in the hub’s plan is supporting a safe and productive workforce by continuously driving the safety agenda. There is a growing awareness and expectation that safety underpins all business decisions and our forestry sector, across the entire supply chain, is putting OHS and the implementation of new technologies and innovations at the forefront of their work agenda.” NF McDonnell and Sons’ commitment to safety extends to its own in-house safety award program which incentivises staff with vouchers to promote safe work practice. The program led to the business being named the 2019 Safe Work SA safety champion gold winner for its dedication to safety and workplace well-being. NF McDonnell and Sons CEO Craig Nisbet said elevating to the international certification standard had further encouraged a “positive workplace culture”. “These safety initiatives are about going above and beyond for our staff – they are our priority each and every day,” he said.

Above - NF McDonnell and Sons work health safety manager Richard McLoughlin, team leader Phillip Lanyon and health and safety representative Dean Hopkins are proud of the mill’s focus on safety and achievement of international OHS certification. “From their mental health, fatigue management, hazard and risk management, to work life balance and healthy lifestyle choices – our plan covers every facet of their well-being to ensure each and every worker can

be productive, be happy and enjoy their role. But most importantly, it’s about ensuring they go home safely to their family every night – a priority for the entire forestry sector.”

Youth Week Saying NO WAY g awards & design to bullyin competition moving full steam ahead

Wattle Range Council has decided to postpone most of its activities planned for Youth Week 2020. “State and Federal Government recommendations have led to the decision to defer most elements of our 2020 Youth Week program planned for April this year,” council’s director development services Steve Chapple said. “We have decided at this stage, to continue with the 2020 Youth Recognition Awards, without the presentation night, and to continue with the Coastal Protection Sign Design competition. All other SA Youth Week events and activities in Wattle Range have been deferred until a later date and we thank all the collaborators for their assistance in developing the 2020 program.” Residents are reminded that nominations for the Youth Recognition Awards will be accepted until Monday, April 6, with award winners in each of the five categories receiving $200 and an engraved glass plaque. Entries to the Coastal Protection Sign Design Competition can be submitted by local artists and designers 12-25 years of age, until 4pm on Tuesday, March 31. The winning sign will be printed by council and installed at one or more locations along the Wattle Range coastline, while its designer will win $150 cash. Bullying was in the spotlight at Naracoorte High School last week when the school took part in the National Day of Action, which was celebrated in more than 5000 schools across Australia. While the official National Day of Action, which was set down for Friday, March 20, was cancelled, schools still chose to shine a light on the issue, while observing current protocols.

Naracoorte High School was a sea of colour with fluoro colours and orange ribbons heralding the day, which focuses on strategies to prevent bullying and ways the community can ensure bullying and violence play no part in our lives. All students were given #Bullying No Way bag tags and staff and students were asked to write a pledge against bullying on flower sculptures which were placed around the school grounds during the week.

WORKING IN THE

People Business “…we are all about getting the job done professionally and properly but with a touch of fun on the side…” “I have the same enthusiasm for getting up and going to work now as I did when I first started.” They are the words of Jason Malseed and after 30 years running his own real estate business they have never rung truer. Inspired by the great grand father who ran a livestock and real estate business, it seemed inevitable Jason, and his wife Bronwyn, would also look to put out their own shingle and on March 29, 1990 they did just that. “It

was always an ambition to do that,” Jason said. And he started with a similar mixed business – livestock and real estate – but eventually streamlined to focussing on real estate. “You can’t wear two hats so I had to make a call,” Jason said. “So I decided to put 100 per cent of my energy and attention into real estate and that’s when it really took off.” It has seen Jason and the Malseeds Real Estate team rack up some impressive figures over the year, including selling the highest proceed farming land in the region when a Yahl property, land only, no dwelling, went under the hammer for $9710 an acre. “We have also set the record twice for the two highest priced houses in the district – one was a house in Jardine Street and the other was The Customs House at Port MacDonnell, which were both the highest priced properties at the time.” For the past two decades, Jason can lay claim to selling more than 50 properties each year, and for him that’s what it’s all about. “That’s why you get up and go to work every day,” Jason said. “With the internet

and the way people can basically view a property without ever setting foot inside it has really changed the way Jason & Bronwyn Malseed we work but it is still a people business and it is still about building relationships.” It is certainly the impact of online marketing and the estate was always a very traditional ability for people to do their house and serious industry but we tried to hunting research from their couch that also make it fun,” Jason said. “We had has been the most dramatic change a lot of fun making ads in the early Jason has seen in his 40 years in the days. We real estate game, having built up a are all about decade of experience before opening getting the his own business. job done “When I first started in real estate you professionally would have on average 12 inspections and properly of one house before it sold but now but with a it might be three private inspections touch of fun on the side.” and it is not unusual for people to Real estate’s gain has been banking buy houses without ever setting foot and agriculture’s loss, given Jason inside,” he said. “It has become stock had a choice of three jobs when he left standard to be able to showcase a school. “Back then there was so many property while people are sitting in their lounge room or kitchen.” It means while traditional forms of marketing, especially print, still play a pivotal role, but people are happy to flick through the photos online or check out an online virtual walk through rather than visiting the property in question. “It has meant we can do this job with less staff, which is good but also sad,” he said. And this is from a man, who at one stage had 25 staff across five offices across the region. “Because of the internet we have been able to bring that down to two offices and we do more business with less staff.” Marketing is an area where Jason has always looked to be at the forefront, coming up with campaigns like Mr Real Estate to buck the trend and stand out from the crowd. “Real lifestyle1.net | 08

choices,” Jason said. “I was offered a job at one of the big four banks, offered a job managing a farm and a job in real estate.” The rest, as they say, is history. “It was always going to be real estate,” he said. “It is the biggest financial investment most people make and it was exciting to be involved in that major transaction and play a part in people’ s lives like that.” Make no mistake, it is an industry

where you experience highs and lows and there has been a lot of them over the years, but for Jason it feels like home and he wouldn’t swap it for quids. “It is just what I love doing and it has been great to do it with Bronwyn by my side,” he said. “She has been a huge part of this and one of the reasons it has worked for so long. About 10 years in we tried to not bring work home and we have tried really hard and we are definitely better at it now but it is basically impossible. It is a bit of a 24/7 job. I take calls all the time so basically when I am at home I am still at work.”

DESIGNED FOR STYLE Don’t let Momentum’s good looks fool you, it’s strong and practical. Designed for the rigours of daily use, Momentum’s features allow for effortless cleaning and its hardware is engineered for durablity.

And there is someone else from the family about to be added to the mix with son Sam on the cusp of finishing his study and set to join the family

business any day. “He has been asking me for seven years, every Christmas he would ask, and now it is happening,” Jason said. Sam joining the Malseeds Real Estate team makes him the second of Bronwyn and Jason’s children to work in the family based operation, with eldest daughter Kelli having completed a traineeship at the business before spreading her wings, She is now a make up artist in the UK. Sam, of course, has been travelling the world, more than 100 cities to be exact, as he pursued his dancing career, but home has been calling for some time and he can’t wait to be part of the Malseed Real Estate story. “His people skills are amazing, so much better than mine, so I think he will be a natural,” Jason said. “He has been helping me for a lot over the years, so he basically already knows it all. He would have been to more than 100 inspections, deals and transactions with me and I am so excited to have him coming on board.” Bronwyn and Jason’s other daughter Kristi has also pursued her dancing passion and then transitioned into a high powered event management role in Melbourne. And Malseeds Real Estate has been all about family with Jason now working with the fourth generation of families he has built relationships with over his 40 year career. “I am now

selling to the kids, grand kids and even great grand kids of people who I started doing business with back when I first started.” Jason also considers the Mount Gambier business community a “family”. “It is a tight knit business community that I just love,” he said. “Probably only people with their own business would understand but in tough times, like now, there are a lot of loyal people out there. I have had some wonderful mentors and some people who have really supported me and the business and so many of them now are some of our closest friends. We probably don’t spend enough time together but the friendships are strong and long lasting.“ The Mount Gambier community, in general, is also an extension of that family and Malseeds has sponsored more than 50 sporting group and community organisations with the Variety Club and multiple drought relief projects being two causes that have captured Jason’s passion.
