Cover - Plenty of old favourites at 2020 South East Field Days Lucindale’s Yakka Park is set to host the 42nd edition of the South East Field Days on March 20 & 21 as organisers again brace for a monster event with a jam packed program featuring old favourites and new attractions. One of the centrepieces of the 2020 event is the hosting of the 2020 Coprice Australian Yard Dog Championships, with a third course having to be opened up to cater with the bumper nominations. The action with the working dogs kicks off on Wednesday, March 18, and then continues through every day until the close of the Field Days on Saturday, March 21, with the official opening of the national championships at 12.30pm on Friday, March 20. There will be a strong focus on local produce as well at the 2020 event with a number of wineries and food producers, including Mike’s Beef Jerky, Wangolina Wines, DiGiorgio Family Wines, Hollick Wines, Narabeez Honey, Woodsoak Wines, Mount Benson Estate, Cape Jaffa Wines & Loophole Brewing Co. As always, the South Australian Police Dixieland Band, will provide the musical backdrop over the two days of the main program, with the Sunrise Christian School Choir performing on Friday, March 20. One of the most time honoured events at country events is wood chopping and the South East Axemen Association are returning to showcase

Humans are the only animals whose brains shrink

the wide range of skills and strength, again on both Friday and Saturday, with displays scattered throughout both days. The Field Days are all about boys and their toys and aside from the machinery on offer from farm suppliers, there is also the hugely popular monster trucks and the Can Am Team ‘Addicted to Mud’ stunts and demonstrations. The Lucindale Lions Club have always prided themselves on making the Field Days an inclusive event with a strong focus on health and well being, which is why they don’t just offer mobility scooter hire so you can easily make your way around the expanses of Yakka Park and check out all the exhibitors and the entertainment, but have also continued to make the Wimmera Hearing Van and the skin cancer screening unit a focus of the 2020 event. To make an appointment at the skin cancer screening unit please call the Field Days office on (08)8766 7001. And while organisers are also mindful of making sure seniors are well catered for, there is also a strong focus on the youngest visitors to the field days with laser tag, mini golf, the Balharry Memorial Children’s Activity Centre, this year in the Elad Shed, and the Lucindale Engineering Puppy Pound, as well as the raft of school competitions which will be on display with winners announced.

l d i n a e e h o t t e s t Homelessness Fundraiser Poe FUNDRAISER SELLS OUT IN RECORD TIME The 2020 Support Homeless People Luncheon to be held on Friday 3 April at the Barn Palais has sold out - the quickest take up of tickets in the event’s history. The first luncheon was held in 2012 and was the brainchild of the late philanthropist Barry Maney OAM and Barry Maney Group dealer principal Barry Stafford. “To have the luncheon sell-out one month before the event has blown me and my committee away,” Mr Stafford said. “We have businesses who have supported the event since its inception and as soon as we let them know it’s on again, they purchase their tables. Each year we get asked to increase the ticket numbers but we decided some time ago that because this event is about relationships, and it is those relationships that lead to substantial donations, so we cap it at 500.”

elebrated Australian and internationally recognised poet Rupert McCall OAM will visit Mount Gambier to perform the role of emcee for the 2020 Support Homeless People Luncheon on Friday, April 3, at The Barn Palais. The Brisbane based poet recently launched his much anticipated “best of” anthology, Golden Soil, which marks his 25th year as one of the nation’s leading poets, who has been honoured with addressing crowds from Anzac Cove at Gallipoli to Ground Zero for the New York Fire Department. One of the attendees at Mr McCall’s book launch in December last year

was Liam Flaherty, Captain of Rescue 2, the most revered station in New York’s iconic Fire Department. Captain Flaherty said when he first heard Mr McCall’s critically acclaimed tribute, A Firefighter’s Dream, written in response to the tragic events of 9/11, he was blown away and determined to meet the poet.

Above - Support Homeless People Luncheon committee chairman Barry Stafford and committee members Robin Reid, Anne Hinkly-Tyler, Di Ind, Astyn Reid & ac.care marketing and communications manager Jason Wallace ready to welcome guests to this year’s event on April 3.

“I basically told him that in the nine years since 9/11, I had heard speeches, songs, poems and sermons from poets, priests and politicians alike, but this poem was head and shoulders above,” Captain Flaherty said. Mr McCall wrote the poem at the request of Australian firefighters travelling for the Tour of Duty Charity Run in the USA in 2010. There was a big send-off in Sydney, where he recited A Firefighter’s Dream for the Australian firefighters, with former prime minister John Howard attending in his role as patron. The poem was recorded and played at a function at the Australian Consulate in Los Angeles before the run and was well received by the Americans. Captain Flaherty subsequently rang Mr McCall, asking him to fly to New York 30 days later for the 9/11 Ceremony at Ground Zero. “Of course I said yes,” Mr McCall said. He delivered the poem on the night of 9/11 in 2011 during a sunset ceremony at the site of the World Trade Centre. “He stunned a crowd of thousands when he recited those magical words on the very ground where so many of my brothers were lost,” Captain Flaherty said. “There wasn’t a dry eye on the street that night and it remains one of the most powerful moments I have ever experienced.” Support Homeless People Luncheon chairman Barry Stafford said the committee was excited to be able to bring the renowned poet to Mount lifestyle1.net | 04

Gambier for the event through a local connection. Q Advertising Public Relations director Peppi Bueti lived in Mount Gambier during his formative years. He now lives and works on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, but still makes regular visits to the Limestone Coast to catch up with family and friends and maintain his connection to his hometown. “I’ve known Rupert for well over a decade and I’ve seen him perform at a number of major events in Australia and overseas and I was also fortunate to be engaged to undertake the communications for his recent book launch,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to bring Rupert back home to perform in Mount Gambier and when I suggested it to Barry, he was very keen as he knew Rupert would help take the event to the next level. We have a table booked at the lunch and I’ll be there to see Rupert perform his magic to a massive crowd, while also supporting such an important cause.”

Mr Stafford said the luncheon was “all about relationships and how we can help others”. “It’s through relationships that we can bring the speakers to town and it is through relationships that we can find local solutions to societal issues too,” he said. Golden Soil features many of Mr McCall’s finest works spanning 27 years, including his renowned masterpiece Green and Gold Malaria, along with odes to Roger Federer, Rod Laver, Steve Irwin, Winx, Shane Warne, Black Caviar, the Wallabies and the Melbourne Cup. There are also tributes to the soldiers of Afghanistan and another piece commissioned by the Australian War Memorial for the Anzac Centenary. “In my conversations with Barry, I am learning about the challenges that people can face in country towns when they are experiencing homelessness,” Mr McCall said. “I have been impressed by the success of the Support Homeless People Luncheon and how the business community comes together to support a local charity. The fact the funds raised remain in the town to directly help local people makes this event even more special.”

For a blooming good cause There is no better time to visit a commercial rose farm than early Autumn and no better reason than to raise money for the local school and that’s why Wagner’s Rose Nursery annual open day is such a well supported community event. So rose lovers and aspiring gardeners need to save the date – Sunday, March 29 – to tap into Brian Wagner’s more than four decades of experience in the industry. Wagner’s Rose Nursery grows every year nearly 200,000 rose plants of

800 different varieties, to supply retail nurseries, councils and landscapers all over Australia, and retail customers through their online store. And the timing could not be more perfect with the rose farm expected be in flower with the last, and probably best, flush of the year before starting its busy digging season in winter. The open day provides a rare behind the scenes insight into just what it takes to produce stunning blooms and visitors are welcome to walk through

the nursery discovering all the rose varieties plus the 2020 new releases and Brian (pictured) will host tours all day, explaining how he grows his roses and how to look after them. “This will be our eighth open day,” Brian said. “All the previous ones were so successful that we have customers asking for the next date already the year before. It’s becoming an important appointment for many of our visitors.” Wagner’s Rose Nursery has been growing roses for more than 60 years,

It’s also an important community event, raising funds for Penola Primary School; all proceeds from the entrance will be donated to the school, and different classes will have food, coffee and cut flowers stalls to raise funds for their school camps.” Food, coffee, drinks, wine, craft beer and garden products will be available for sale, and there’ll be an entertaining area for children, to let their parents enjoying the day. No silence on violence... My son Shaquille likes doing stuff. He’s one of those kids who is never happier than when he’s outside doing stuff. Sport is a particular interest, but he gets almost as much enjoyment out of weeding or pruning shrubs. That’s a good thing. Last week I got up bright and early for my morning run. As I was getting prepared to go Shaquille wandered out of his room, yawned and enquired as to whether he could come. Like I said, he likes doing stuff. I’m still battling for fitness after injuring my ankle last May. In my last run with Shaq at the Blue Lake Fun Run, he comfortably beat me so I had no doubt that he’d be able to keep pace with me on my four kilometre run, so I let him come along. Sure enough, through the first kilometre he spent most of the time a couple of metres ahead of me, looking back with a smile on his face making

it clear that he felt he was fitter and faster than the old man. As we cruised through the next kilometre he seemed to be tiring, resorting to a walk every now and then. I would shuffle past him, which would prompt him to start running again. Eventually it got to a point where I was having to wait for him to catch up before I crossed roads. By the end of the four kilometres, I had clearly done a better job at consistently running, demonstrating that I was undoubtedly fitter than he. When I got home, obviously I made a point of loudly bragging to Donna about how fit I was, and how I was obviously returning to peak fitness. I may have also made a number of comments about how unfit Shaquille was and how he might need to eat a little less chocolate. At this point Shaquille decided to break his silence on the matter. “Actually, dad. I was getting sore legs from having to run so slowly.” His point was that instead of running in his usual elegant, graceful fashion, he’d had to plod along at my old man’s pace, leading to greater strain on his legs and consequently discomfort. Donna laughed at this. The thing that will amaze you about this story is that despite the obvious mocking of me by both of them I didn’t douse either of them in petrol and murder them. Amazing, hey? There have been numerous times over the years when I’ve been really frustrated at Donna and/or my children, and I’ve never murdered any

of them. Hard to believe, right? Hopefully this isn’t coming across as too trite an introduction to a discussion of such an important issue, but I do have to try for a little bit of humour in my articles. I don’t think I’m the first to make the observation about how much attention the coronavirus is getting in the media at the moment when there are far more deaths from domestic violence in Australia than the virus. If only everyone was putting as much time and effort into combating domestic violence as they are into stockpiling toilet paper and hand sanitiser. As a society, we have to put much

more effort into dealing with violence in general. I saw a quote attributed to Daniel Craig where he’d apparently said, “If your kid is bullying my kid, and my kid has tried to tell your kid to stop, and your kid doesn’t, my kid has been instructed to punch your kid in the face.” I understand the sentiment as seeing your child being treated poorly would have to be one of the worst things to experience. But violence is bad. Teaching a young person to solve problems with violence is a bad pattern to get them in. I suspect they’re not going to take it as a last resort in a drastic situation, but as a way to solve problems that their parent has authorised. More

and more in recent years, we’ve seen the results of violence, one punch deaths etc and the damage they do to lives, families and communities. As a society, we can’t support or accept violence. Going back to domestic violence, most often it seems to involve control and the man not having the control over the woman that he wants. These instances are not the woman’s fault but I do wonder if we are letting men get into these habits of expecting to “own” a woman and control what she does in their teens or even younger. From my observations they seem to get used to relationships as teenagers where their girlfriend follows them around, often essentially abandons her friendships and basically devotes her life to this boy. This often becomes their model for what a relationship should look like. At some point in the future the young lady remembers that she likes doing stuff with her other friends, and likes to have an identity of her own. More and more these kids are in very adult relationships at younger and younger ages, when realistically they’re not adequately developed emotionally to manage them. We as families have a responsibility to train them about establishing healthy relationships and how to treat partners. We need to talk with them about being respectful in relationships, and maintaining their own identity outside of being a couple. We need to make sure they have a life other than their partner. Not your classic Robbie Tansel article about a mate eating leftover pizza crusts, but just felt I wanted to say something after the tragic event a couple of weeks ago. If you think I should be able to beat a ten year old over four kms, without the advantage of him having to run slowly and getting sore legs, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

Seaside town hosts leadership program

I

t debuted last year and was a huge success and a two day retreat in Robe marked the start of the second intake of the Limestone Coast Leadership Program last month. Hosting 17 participants, the eight month program focuses on community capacity building and is tailor made for finding solutions in this region. Program coordinator Ali Auld said the participants of the Limestone Coast Leadership Program would work together on several community action projects that address real issues in the region. “Building leadership capacity and developing networks of skilled and motivated people who can support each other to take on roles and projects for the benefit of the region’s community and economy, is the aim of the program, Ms Auld said. “Regional

delivery of this high quality program by The Leaders Institute of SA, overcomes barriers that similar city based programs present in terms of costs for travel and accommodation and time away from work. We are fortunate to have the CEOs from each of the seven council areas provide participants regional context, with an insight into the unique (and common) issues, opportunities and challenges occurring across the Limestone Coast.

â€œâ€Śthose programs have been shown to produce wide ranging social benefits including active citizenship, increased capacity, shared purpose, and supporting participants to be catalysis for community action‌â€?

Ms Auld said the success enjoyed by sustainable ongoing leadership programs in other states indicated the program would be a worthwhile investment. “Those programs have been shown to produce wide ranging social benefits including active citizenship, increased capacity, shared purpose, and supporting participants to be catalysis for community action, she said. “Without the support of organisations and businesses within the Limestone Coast, a program like this, could not be offered. We are very lucky and grateful to have such community minded regional businesses, industries, organisations and council leaders who recognise the value in a program such as this and provide scholarships to ensure that financial barriers do not impact on emerging leaders being able to undertake the program. The second year will importantly support a ripple affect with this year’s participants having opportunities to connect with the 2019 alumni. Business, industry and community organisations are invited to partner in this community capacity building program through sponsorship or scholarships, with a prospectus available from Ali Auld leadership@ lclga.sa.gov.au For further information regarding the program www.lclga.sa.gov.au/ limestone-coast-leadership-program PHOTO COURTESY OF JACQUI BATEMAN.

Doing it for the kids Limestone Coast schools have been able to tap into the Federal Government’s Local Schools Community Fund with almost $70,000 headed to six schools across the region from the $30.2million funding pool. Member for Barker Tony Pasin was able to pass on the good news to Allendale East Area School, McDonald Park School, Kalangadoo Primary School, Sunrise Christian School, Naracoorte High School and Bordertown Primary School. “The Coalition Government recognises the important role that schools play in our community and that’s why we’re funding small projects that will make a big difference at our local schools,” Mr Pasin said. “These local school projects will go a long way in helping our students and the local school community in Barker when they are completed.” Projects funded in the Limestone Coast include: • $12,000 for Allendale East Area School to undertake the installation of an outdoor kitchen to accompany the newly completed garden project

designed around the principals of Aboriginal Healing Circles. Edible plants that were plated as part of this project can be used for cooking along with cultural lessons, school gatherings and meetings. • $10,000 for McDonald Park School to undergo a small scale extension/ refurbishment of an old sport’s shed to turn into makerspace for STEM activities. • $5000 for Kalangadoo Primary School to purchase new laptops and iPads for upper, middle and junior primary students to allow access to all students to technology for learning. • $20,000 for Sunrise Christian School to develop a learning space for students to learn basic woodworking skills and to deliver small scale community projects. •$1482 for Naracoorte High School to provide useful strategies to their students and help improve their ‘response-ability’ to stress and struggles that they face as teens with their new The Teen Resilience Project •$18,053 for Bordertown Primary

The Riddoch Art Gallery opened a national touring exhibition The Partnershipping Project on Friday. Featuring 20 regional visual artists, the exhibition centres around the question ‘as online experiences take up more time in our lives, do our relationships to place still matter?’

“...their works challenge stereotypes about what living in the regions of Australia might mean...”

Featuring the artists’ work in eight small boats, the exhibition arrives in Mount Gambier having travelled up the East Coast of Australia to other regional centres including Townsville and Lismore before it returns across the Bass Strait to its origin in Burnie, Tasmania. Featured artists include David mangenner Gough, Selena de Carvalho, Gail Mabo, Vanghoua Anthony Vue, Aris Prabawa, Penny Evans, Damien Shen in collaboration with Robert Hague, and Sera Waters.

School for the provision of additional IT resources to support students Above – McDonald Park School students Noah Maxwell & Tex Tilley, Member for Barker Tony Pasin, students Isabella Schroder, Jase Maxwell & Tully Lindner with teacher Kate Eldridge.

Riddoch Art Gallery Director Melentie Pandilovski said each artist has transformed a small salvaged boat into a work of art using varying materials and telling individual stories of their own connection to place. “The artists come from a broad range of cultural backgrounds and experiences and their works challenge stereotypes about what living in the regions of Australia might mean,” he said. “Each artist is producing exciting new work drawing from their own lives; their own places; their ideas, hopes, dreams, fears and passions. For the local instalment The Riddoch Art Gallery welcomed artists Damien Shen, Robert Hague and Sera Waters to the exhibition. Sera is currently working in Adelaide and adds a local theme to the exhibition having spent her childhood in Mount Gambier. “Sera’s art practice is characterised by her ongoing passion for textiles, to tell stories about her family’s history in Australia, shining a light on some of the more troubling or difficult stories from the past,” Dr Pandilovski said. The Partnershipping Project is on display until May 24 at The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex, 1 Bay Road. The gallery is free and open from 10am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 3pm on weekends and some public holidays.

THE PARTNERSHIPPING PROJECT David mangenner Gough, Selena de Carvalho, Gail Mabo, Vanghoua Anthony Vue, Aris Prabawa, Penny Evans, Damien Shen in collaboration with Robert Hague; and Sera Waters.

7 March – 24 May 2020 A nationally touring exhibition, The Partnershipping Project was conceived to link regional artists, regional galleries and regional audiences to ask: ‘Does Place Matter?’. The result is an exhibition that is redeveloped in each regional location as new artists join. The project has become a series of iterations that explore the effects of ‘globalised’ thinking and the impact on changing relationships to ‘place’. The artists come from a broad range of cultural backgrounds and experiences and their works challenge stereotypes about what living in the regions of Australia might mean. The Partnershipping Project is a Burnie Regional Art Gallery exhibition toured by Contemporary Art Tasmania.

Inaugural forestry chief appointed

Road safety in focus Road safety will be improved on several rural roads within the Limestone Coast with a $12.1 million package of works to be undertaken by Downer EDI Works Pty Ltd, funded by the Australian and South Australian governments. The works got underway last bweek and include shoulder sealing, roadside hazard protection and delineation improvements. The works on the Carpenter Rocks Road, Riddoch Highway and Clay Wells Road will also include new line marking, replacement of guide posts and improved delineation. Works will be undertaken from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, with lane and speed restrictions as required. Motorists are advised to take extra care when workers are on site and observe speed and lane restrictions when travelling through the area. . These safety improvements are in support of the State Government’s commitment to raise the speed limit to 110 km/h on Clay Wells Road, Carpenter Rocks Road and Riddoch Highway, through the $70 million Regional Roads Projects Safety Improvements Program. Member for Barker Tony Pasin said he was glad to see the works getting underway following the Federal funding component of 80 per cent being brought forward.

“Regional road upgrades are vital to increasing productivity and safety. The Morrison Government is making these upgrades a priority by bring this funding forward,” Mr Pasin said. “I’ve been strong advocate for our local roads and while the State Government made a commitment to raise the speed limit back to 110 km per hour, I’m pleased that our Federal Government has stepped up to help fund upgrades to these state roads,” Mr Pasin said. Member for MacKillop, Nick McBride MP, has welcomed the start of the safety upgrades, saying the community has been calling for speed limits to be re-instated. “These works are an important step in the process of increasing speed limits on roads that were reduced to 100km/hr under the former Labor Government,” he said. “Improving the safety and quality of these roads is imperative to country road users. Our regional communities rely on, and deserve, safe road networks, and I look forward to the upgrades being completed.” Works are expected to be completed late 2020, weather permitting, and the final speed increase will be signposted as projects are completed.

e if l t s e b ir e h t g in iv L Students from across the Glenelg Shire have been inducted as the next wave of youth mental health leaders following the official welcome event for Live4Life. Live4Life Glenelg inducted 45 new and ongoing crew members, made up of Year 9 and Year 10 students from across the shire, to continue on the initiative’s award winning success in

the south west region. The induction day, held during a full day session at the Portland Civic Hall, provided crew members with a hands-on insight into the year ahead, with team building exercises, planning activities and an overview of the role of Live4Life and crew members.Youth Live4Life community engagement coordinator Cathryn Walder said this

Member for Barker Tony Pasin (left) with South Australian Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll (centre) & Member for MacKillop Nick McBride (right) at the site of the Frances Road upgrade

WHAT IS HAPPENING & WHERE • 55 kilometres of shoulder sealing on Clay Wells Road, between Southern Ports Highway and Callendale Road, including seven bridge barrier replacements. • 4 kilometres of shoulder sealing on Frances Road, just south of Bordertown, funded by the National Blackspot program. • 16 kilometre of shoulder sealing on Carpenter Rocks Road, between Burrungule Road junction and Mount Gambier, with four kilometres of this work funded by the National Blackspot Program. • On Riddoch Highway (Bay Road), between Mount Gambier and Port MacDonnell, works will include the installation of an 800 millimetre wide centreline median between Kilsby Road and Allendale, audio tactile linemarking, minor shoulder seal widening, road side hazard protection and an upgrade of the Bay Road / Mt Salt Road junction to provide a right turn lane into Mt Salt Road.

“…. they will champion positive mental health promotion, as well as building their own public speaking and communication skills….” year’s induction was a little different, with new Live4Life community Southern Grampians joining the induction day. “In 2020 we are in a special position where we are able to bring both the Glenelg and Southern Grampians crew members together,” she said. “This is the first year the initiative will be rolled out in the Southern Grampians area, so

lifestyle1.net | 10

it’s fantastic to have both communities working together towards a common goal. In total 60 young people attended the session which focusses on preparing the crew members for the year ahead. The role of the crew is to assist in the delivery of events and drive key Live4Life messages at their school and in their community. It is evident that young people want to hear from other young people about mental health, which is why the crew is so vital to the initiative’s success. Throughout the year crew members will gain valuable knowledge and skills to help them feel more confident in their role as Youth Mental Health Ambassadors. They will champion positive mental health promotion, as well as building their own public speaking and communication skills. We are excited to soon introduce our new crews to the community, with a launch event planned for the near future.” The Live4Life model focuses on a whole of community approach to mental health education and suicide prevention in order to build resilient young people and communities. Since its implementation in the Glenelg Shire in 2017 more than 140 young people have participated as crew members and more than 1100 community members have received mental health training.

The Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub (GTFIH) has appointed Liz McKinnon as its inaugural executive general manager. Ms. McKinnon, a resident of the region, is well known, having worked in economic development, tourism and communications for the Glenelg Shire Council since 2015, with prior experience as a media advisor to former Victorian Premier and Member for South West Coast Denis Napthine. GTFIH Chair Linda Sewell said Ms. McKinnon brought the Hub extensive experience in advocacy, communications and stakeholder engagement. “We are delighted to welcome Liz to the Green Triangle Forest Industries Hub following strong interest in the role,” Ms. Sewell said. “We have an ambitious plan to meet projected local and global demand for wood and fibre products. Liz brings an expert understanding to the role the Hub can play in supporting vibrant and prosperous regions. She will ensure that the Hub achieves its goals, advances the key issues facing our industry in the Green Triangle and does so whilst remaining true to the GTFIH’s Statement of Commitment. Ms. McKinnon said she looked forward to joining the GTFIH. “There is no doubt that the Green Triangle forest and timber industries are critical to the economic and social prosperity of our region,” she said. “I am looking forward to delivering the outcomes of this first of its kind plan and the opportunities to promote and grow the wood fibre sector across the Green Triangle. The Hub is committed to working with the sector, government and key stakeholders over the coming months to set a path towards achieving long term social, environmental and economic success. I will ensure that we focus on supporting the sustainable growth of forestry as the industry works with governments and communities to meet future demand, with a renewable and sustainable resource.” Ms. McKinnon said she would also be working closely with representatives of the wider industry. “Our industry has really come together and there are fantastic examples of collaboration, like the regional forest industry hubs across Australia,” she said. Ms McKinnon commenced her role this week.

The first regional South Australian medicinal cannabis forum will be held in Mount Gambier, as Independent MP Troy Bell pushes for legislative reform around the products. Mr Bell said the intention of the forum, being held on May 6, was to inform the local community about the most up-to-date information, research and upcoming changes for the medicinal cannabis sector. “I expect 2020 to be a big year for legislative change around these products, both at a State and Federal level and for social change at a community level, he said. Since late 2016, it has been legal to prescribe medicinal cannabis but the research is showing South Australian doctors are the least likely in the nation to prescribe medicinal cannabis. “ People in my electorate are telling me they can’t access medicinal cannabis products for legitimate health concerns so it’s clear there’s a significant information void out there. Representatives from Leafcann, who are currently developing Australia’s largest medicinal cannabis manufacturing facility in Adelaide, will present at the forum. Mr Bell said the region should be looking for opportunities within the growing sector. “The medicinal cannabis industry is expected to be worth $1billion within Australia alone by 2025, he said. “It makes sense to inform ourselves as much as we can from industry leaders as to how our region can be involved and how we can develop those skills and facilities needed for the future. The forum will include one session for the general public and another additional session for GPs, police, councils and additional stakeholders. Also speaking at the event will be Mount Gambier’s Katherine Height,

! whose daughter Ella is currently participating in a long term medicinal cannabis clinical trial in Victoria. Katherine said she had fought for years to access the products in South Australia for Ella’s epilepsy, after traditional medication options failed.

“Because of medicinal cannabis, I got my girl back, she said. “As it stands today, Ella has had a 35 per cent reduction in her seizures and 2019 has been her best year by far. “I have friends who have courageous, resilient children who have exhausted all options and whose quality of life is deteriorating daily, whose only option left to try is medicinal cannabis, yet like me, are being turned away. “Yes, every case is different, and every child is different, but these families should be given the opportunity to try. South Australians shouldn’t have to go interstate to access these products. Mr Bell said it was time for legislative change to remove barriers to accessing the products and introduced a four-part motion in State Parliament last week. The motion will call on the State Government to remove jurisdictional

and legislative barriers, streamline patient access pathways and also raise the potential for down-scheduling low-dose CBD products. “The fact we have South Australians with legitimate medical needs having to cross the border to access the products through clinical trials shows it’s time for action by the South Australian Government, he said. The forum will be held on May 6 at the Uni SA Mount Gambier campus, with registrations available in coming weeks.

The making of a TV hit Cleverman stormed onto ABC TV in 2016 as a dystopian sci-fi with a difference. With predominantly Indigenous cast and senior crew, the series explores a series of Aboriginal origin stories in a contemporary context, with political nuance touching on themes of class, racism and power. Exploring First Nations storytelling, language and creativity in production design, costumes and props, this free exhibition invites you to listenfirst and immerse yourself in a powerful and contemporary expression of origin stories. The exhibition, which opens at Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery on March 14, explores the making of Cleverman and artwork from the original comic book series.

Daena Wombwell was on fire with two doubles to rightfield, scoring four of Blue’s runs. Nicole Vause continued to punish the ball with two hits of her own to leftfield. Angela Queale took a sharp catch at third to start the game, matching Wanderers fielding in the first innings with Sarah Moretti and Cathy Whiting shutting down Warriors’ line drives. Whiting was great with two hits but Wanderers only had one other hit via the speedster Fiona Finch as Blue’s pitcher Leyna Bruggemann (pictured right) dominated their bats. Bruggemann recorded seven strike outs in four innings while smashing three hits to leftfield, including a triple. Blue welcomed back Raquel Sneath at first base who lined a double to centrefield. Cats on the prowl The Cats mens team continued their winning ways with a 10 point victory over the Bulldogs Blue in the South East Coast Basketball League last week. Simon Berkefeld led his young Bulldogs side with 33 points however it was not enough against a well-balanced scoring output from the Cats who had four players reached double figures. Cougars ended Roos playoff hopes with a 20 point win. Tobi de Wit had the hot hand again for Cougars, leading all scorers with 37 points. Top placed Panthers also ended the finals hopes of Bulldogs Red team, with Panther Olli Thomson having a night out with 31 points ith good support from Jake Walker, with 18. Shaun Lock and Mason Hein battled hard for the Bulldogs however it was not enough going down by 15. The two top women’s teams in Cats and Cougars took the court, with Cougars needing a win to have a shot at taking top place from Cats. In a physical game it was Cats that controlled the game early behind the play of Emily Winter, while a late run by Cougars gave them a shot and Cats a fright, however it was too little too late and the Cats held on by six points. Emily Winter led Cats with 20 points while Keryl Ousey had 20 for Cougars.
