Crowds of around 4000 guests are expected to pack the main street of Port MacDonnell on Saturday, February 22 ,from 11am-6pm. The air show is just one of two new experiences at the late summer event, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. An authentic rock lobster fishing experience, dubbed the Bay Escape Pull-a-Pot, aboard the Remarkable charter vessel is also on offer, giving 40 guests a look inside the town’s main industry. Committee member Jody Elliot said the exclusive ticketed experience, now on sale from the Bay Escape website, was designed to showcase the town’s reputation as Australia’s Rock Lobster capital. “We’ve got the largest cray fishing fleet in South Australia and there’s a real fascination with what fishos get up to up there. This event will give guests some great insight into what goes on out there with an experienced fisherman,” she said. The event will also feature a wide selection of street food and wine vendors from across the Limestone Coast, market stalls, a host of kids entertainment and popular mascot Jay the Cray will also return to entertain the crowds. Doing it

for the

kid s

You cannot help but be inspired to do something creative when you step into Relish Art Room.

F

rom the vivid paint to the coloured fabrics and craft items, from the hot glue guns to the paint spattered easels, you can understand why the children who attend the art classes here, run by Anna Mitchell, love heading to the art classes and work hard from go to whoa of the one hour sessions. Anna also runs workshops during school holidays and for Riddoch Art Gallery. In a previous life Anna was a graphic designer, completing a Bachelor in Visual Communication and Graphic Design, graduating with Honours in 2001, and then running Relish Design Studio – her award winning graphic design business from 2004. But while time didn’t always allow her to continue her own artistic pursuits, especially once she became the proud mum of three boys, she did start dabbling in her own work again once she joined Sole Sisters

Collective, a group of five local graphic designers who motivate and inspire each other to put together exhibitions from time to time – basically giving them a reason to devote some of their time to art for pleasure. When Anna first joined the group in 2007 when Melissa Horton, who was

the key driver of the collaborative, which also includes Bianca Gillin, Kristyn Jones and Simone Kain, established the concept, it was the first time she had indulged in her own creative work since Year 12. And now she is passing on her creative talents to a new generation, establishing Relish Art Room, the branding a nod to her graphic design business, by running art classes and workshop for children aged two and up. And not only does she bring her art nous to the table but she has also completed a Graduate Diploma of Leaning & Teaching. Anna started running Relish Art Room two years ago but it was only six months ago she started working out of a dedicated space for the classes – a refurbished studio adjoining the house. “Before that we used to work min the kitchen and living room,” Anna said. “It is so great now to have my own space and I just love the set up.” At the moment she runs seven classes a week on Monday and Wednesday, as well as her school holiday workshops. Class limits of eight are set so Anna can provide the perfect balance of the kids working independently and making their own creative choices, as well as getting a helping hand from her when required. In reality, the foray into teaching kids art started well before Relish Art Room became a reality – it started when Anna’s own children were younger, around seven years ago. “I used to run classes like this at their playgroups and that’s what got me into completing my primary teaching

Isobel and Eliza

studies,” Anna said. “I have done a bit of relief work but this is what I really love. I started doing small art groups and it built up from there.” Now Relish Art Room has a waiting list and when you hear what’s on offer, it’s not surprising – collage, water colour, ink work, chalk drawing – the list is endless. “I am not limited

by a curriculum so we are free to do whatever we want,” Anna said. She also loves to give kids the opportunity to work on large scale pieces. In recent times, one of her more popular activities has been making houses. The students paint the houses and the make the furniture and the people and the results have been amazing. Relish Art Room students also had their first exhibition over the Christmas holidays when their work was displayed at Mount Gambier’s Main Corner and it was hard to tell who was more impressed, the students, their families or the general public. For Anna, Relish Art Room is all about promoting art and making it accessible and, above all, enjoyable. “You don’t the kids to lose confidence, you want them to create what they want and be happy with that,” she

said. “A lot of kids stop art because it is what they do is not perfect but I am all about encouraging them to have a go and take risks and try new things.” Of course, just as Anna is focussing her passion for art and creativity into teaching a new generation, so, Anna’s passion was engendered basically from birth, in fact it could

be argued it’s in her genes - Anna is the daughter of acclaimed artist Claire Souter. “She is such a big part of this,” Anna said. “I still bounce ideas off her and I send her photos after every class. She is absolutely the biggest influence in my life.”

What’s wrong with the kids today... Have you ever heard someone say that kids are different today? They’ve changed? I have said things like that in the past. But I’ve worked out in the last couple of days that I, and so many others, am wrong. You see, the kids haven’t changed. They’re exactly the same. The world has changed. We’ve changed. And not for the better. I heard this week that the education department aren’t allowing the use of guns as part of school activities. At this point you might be nodding in agreement at their sensible decision. Now I’m not a fan of guns really, but surely there’s not a problem with students being exposed to something like the annual come and try target shooting day that has successfully been run involving local high schools for years.

As I understand it, this day is not permitted under new education department rules. Maybe you’re still of the opinion that is not such a terrible problem. The ban on gun use goes further. Schools are not permitted to use starter pistols that fire caps. The education department has banned cap guns. How will they start races on sports day? Schools are permitted to use electronic guns connected to speakers and with flashing lights. Was this really a problem that some stooge in an office in Adelaide felt that he or she had to devote time to? Did we really need a policy on this? I’ve also heard of schools who don’t allow children to go outside on days with particular weather conditions. When I was a youngster, we were occasionally not able to go outside if it was raining, but it would have to be particularly heavy precipitation. In our modern, overprotective world, some schools will not let students outside on days that are really hot, or really windy. Surely kids can go outside for half an hour at lunch or recess on a hot day. Is that really a life-threatening situation that we need to manage for them? Tell them to drink plenty of water and try to stay in the shade. You probably don’t even have to tell them. I’d like to think they can figure it out themselves. Likewise, are we really going to keep students inside on windy days because of the remote possibility of harm; a branch may fall out of a tree and hit them for example. Do we really

need to remove every tiny possibility of danger out of their lives? When we were young, we were set free in the world to explore and learn about danger by ourselves. We climbed trees and learned to work out which limbs would support our weight. We jumped off of playgrounds and learnt how high it was safe for us to leap from. We learnt that excessive vigorous exercise on hot days would lead to excessive vomiting. We could then apply this new knowledge to future scenarios. How do kids today learn this stuff? Were there occasional (frequent) broken bones? Of course there were. But we still grew up okay. Pain and a few broken bones were an important part of the learning process. Broken bones in seven to fifteen year olds have reduced by 86% between 1982 and 2019. At the same time serious vehicle accidents in

eighteen to twenty-five year olds have increased by 78%. Is it possible those two things are linked in some way? Have I ever told you how much I love making up statistics? I’m sure that if there are real statistics they’re something like that though. The point is if there is anything wrong with kids today, it’s our fault. We’re the ones who have conditioned and trained them to be exactly as they are. We’ve wrapped them in cotton wool, given them trophies for participation, put them in front of screens to raise them, and generally facilitated a situation that we all then blame the victims for. I think it’s about time we turned off our modems and told them to get on their bikes and see if they can go and find some trouble. YOUNG TALENT TIME at Riddoch Art Gallery The inaugural Limestone Coast senior high school art award exhibition titled Calibre is now on display at the Riddoch Art Gallery with the major prize of $1000 awarded to 2019 Tenison Woods College graduate Max Crook for his work titled ‘Manifestations’.

T

he award was presented at the exhibition opening held at the end of last month. Sponsored by the University of South Australia the exhibition and award aim to showcase the most creative and innovative work from high school students in the region and provides the community with an opportunity to celebrate local talent. “This award represents our commitment to promoting and

celebrating excellence within our community and aims to inspire our young people to continue being creative,” City of Mount Gambier

Arts and Culture Development Officer Serena Wong said. “We take this award seriously and wanted to demonstrate that with a significant prize.” The exhibition features nine artworks and showcases young artists who are demonstrating their creativity, innovation, experimentation and risk taking. Calibre shows the breadth of creative talent we have in our community, encompassing visual art, design, photography, performing art, media and creative art,” Ms Wong said. The pieces were judged by UniSA Adjunct Senior Lecturer School of Art, Architecture and Design Linda Marie Walker and exhibition curator Serena Wong. The winning piece features four functional masks. Each mask

represents a series of emotions for the artist and are made from various materials including vinyl, polymer clay, ducting, computer wires, animal products, copper and fishing line. “Manifestation is a well thought through work, personal and heartfelt. The materials are considered and varied and have been used to achieve particular effects,” Dr Walker said.

“The work references other well known practices, like wood-working, metal-working, and leather-working.” To determine the prize winner local

teachers were asked to nominate their top performing students in areas such as visual art, design, digital technology and integrated learning and elite performing arts/media. “I was thrilled with the decision of the judges, winning this award will have a significant impact on Max as an artist and having the opportunity to show the work in a gallery is wonderful validation for young artists who put so much time and effort into

After working so hard to develop Amber Ridge, Cindy just needed a break and massage therapy became the next chapter of her life. “But it wasn’t my passion and my heart wanted to get back in the garden and cooking food.” And that’s when the move to Compton and setting up her potager garden happened and, in turn, her gardening and cooking school. “I feel like we found our little piece of

omegrown produce and homemade food – that is Cindy Cross’s passion and she is now committed to sharing it with others. The good news is, she is right on our doorstep so there’s no excuse not to take advantage of her knowledge by attending one of her classes at her Compton property at her Cooking and Gardening School – The Post and Rail. It is 15 months she started running classes including sour dough bread making, the art of risotto and arancini, creating a stunning three course meal, pastry making, preserving, wood fired pizza, pasta making and gluten free baking.

cooks clever hacks and the easy way to create some incredible food. “You want people to be able to incorporate what they learn into their own lifestyle,” Cindy said. “I don’t teach people the long way to do things, people don’t have time for that – I teach the easy version. People are amazed when you teach then cooking methods that allow them to do things quickly and easily. The classes are very hands on and everyone gets their hands dirty.” And it’s not just cooking where Cindy has expertise – she also brings more than 25 years of horticulture to the table and has an Advanced Diploma of Horticulture and has been part of the ABC’s talkback gardening show for 15 years. Cindy was also the brains behind

Amber Ridge, her Apsley farm shop, café and nursery, that was a Mecca for food lovers across the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria. “I was

just doing what I loved, combining my horticulture and love of food,” Cindy said. “I had 100 different fruit trees and a garden and was making things from that and it never occurred to me that other people would love it. I wasn’t expecting the café to be so successful but on any given Sunday we could be serving 150 people in our little café in the middle of nowhere on a farm. People kept coming back for good food and hospitality.”

“It has just gone from strength to strength,” Cindy said. “In the first year it was about finding my niche and sorting out what people wanted.” And Cindy has clearly found what works. Her four hour classes involve heading into her stunning potager garden to harvest some fresh produce, then there ;s the instruction in the kitchen and then – arguably the best part – sitting down together as a class to enjoy the food, maybe with a glass of wine. “It has been great and I have already have repeat customers and people not just returning themselves, but bringing their friends,” Cindy said. “It feels like when you are doing the right thing at the right time in the right place, everything falls into place.” Cindy understands that cooking classes can seem daunting but she is about not just showcasing local, seasonal produce and creating delicious dishes, but teaching home

heaven,” Cindy said. The Post and Rail name came from the stunning fence she created with partner Matt Bunt, having milled a massive Cyprus limb from Glencoe. Fruit trees, herbs and flowers and vegies are all part of Cindy’s garden and all form part of her classes. “We pick everything for the meal and flowers for the table,” she said. “I just want to share this with people and share how easy this is – especially this style of garden. I think people are trying to take time for themselves again and what they are looking for is an experience which is why this works.” People clearly want what she is offering too, with people coming to her classes from as far afield as Kaniva, Nhill, Millicent and Casterton, as well as Mount Gambier and Cindy is always working on new recipes in the kitchen and has a mind blowing homemade Worcester Sauce. Cindy also has no intention of stopping just at her gardening and cooking school. She already has a strong social media presence, is writing a book and her aim is to establish a cooking and gardening show. “You’ve always got to have a plan and work towards it,” she said. Keep an eye out in future issues with Cindy set to provide some of her recipes for publication.

Built 1995 and designed by well know South Australia architect John S. Chappel, "Scales on the Marina" is located on the dress circle of Lake Road in Robe. All main rooms in the house come with seaside views, whether it be of the aqua blue waters of Guichen Bay or Lake Butler Marina. When the house was designed, the brief was simple; capture the coastal views from as many rooms as possible and design the home for a large family that loves to entertain. The house has two full size kitchen/entertaining areas (each with complimented with a large deck); 4 bedrooms with sea or marine views (master suite features walk in robe, en suite with a view and private balcony); study/5th bedroom; 3 bathrooms; laundry; and secure parking and storage for two large vehicles under main roof. Additional storage located in the rear yard for garden and aquatic equipment. The property has the ability to be divided into two separate wings. It's currently advertised on the holiday accommodation market with the opportunity to rent the full home or one wing.

The location is a favorite to many visitors in the area only being a 5-10 minute walk to all Robe has to offer; surf beaches, swimming beaches, sailing club, marina, walking/ cycling trails and the amazing restaurants and boutique shopping strip. This is a lifestyle property you should not look past.

I have a new hero. I’ve taken down the Wonder Woman posters, put away the Maggie Thatcher autobiography, and removed my Powderpuff Girls quilt. I am now a devotee of the Super Nanny! Is there nothing this woman cannot do? Hats off to her. It’s bad enough trying to get Mr Two Year Old to co-operate in the supermarket with only a few fellow shoppers taking note, let-alone putting your disciplinary skills to work in front of millions of international viewers. And, while I don’t have the bun, the suit or the glasses I have tried to introduce one of her little super hero techniques - unfortunately without much success. Dismal failure, actually. The naughty corner seems to be having the reverse effect. My downfall may have been letting Mr Five Year Old pick out the appropriate disciplinary corner. He selected one spot for Mr Two Year Old far away from the TV, and one for himself with a prime bird’s eye view. He reasoned “that big boys like to know what’s going on. So we had our spot, and were ready to go - but then I had to contend with a barrage of “can I go to the naughty corner and “should I go to the naughty corner for that? It got to the stage where Mr Five Year Old was actually being a little disruptive so he could go and sit in his favourite spot. And as for Mr Two Year Old, he just didn’t care. FYI - The naughty corner concept has since been abandoned. But as much as I think Super Nan should be the next British PM (I’ve seen those ministerial debates and think the naughty corner would work a treat) I do have one little gripe. Just a tiny one. As she is being telecast to all and sundry could her producer, director, camera assistant even the food lady tell her to say “acceptable not “asseptable. It’s starting to irk me, although it does make her easy to mimmick. Try it, it’s quite fun!

During the month of December 2019, library members had the opportunity to waive their overdue fines by donating gifts or non-perishable items. These items were then collected by the Salvation Army, Portland and St Vincent de Paul, Casterton to ensure the donated goods reached those most vulnerable over the festive season. As a result of the Food for Fines campaign more than 400 Christmas gifts were delivered to families.

Drug & alcohol survey to be unveiled Detailed insight into drug and alcohol use risk factors among Mount Gambier’s next generation will be revealed at a Planet Youth community information session at City Hall this month. Mount Gambier is one of five cities in Australia to participate in the pioneering early intervention program, introduced in Iceland in 1998, which has seen youth drug and alcohol use rates drop to among the lowest in Europe. Around 270 Year 10 students from four schools in the Grant and Mount Gambier council areas participated in an online survey, which saw students asked a range of questions, including drug and alcohol use, time spent outside the home and participation in outside activities and sports. Substance Misuse Limestone Coast (SMLC) Project Officer Sophie Bourchier encouraged interested community members to come along to the session and hear the survey results for themselves. “The Planet Youth team from

Iceland’s Reykjavik University will be managing the session and talking about the success of the program and announcing our local survey results, she said.“These will be incredibly informative and deliver some insight into the mindset of adolescent substance misuse and the factors that may encourage it. A closed workshop for stakeholders, including schools, councils and relevant bodies, will also be held in the afternoon. “There, they will be able to survey the data generated and help guide a blueprint to identify where the gaps are and where efforts and resources can be best directed, Ms Bourchier said. Planet Youth has now been adopted in 20 countries, including Ireland, Chile, Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Sweden and Norway. "The Limestone Coast

region was selected for the trial by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation because of the ongoing proactive work being undertaken by SMLC," said Ms Bourchier. “This trial is not happening because Mount Gambier has any bigger problem than any other regional area. Our region is no different from any other region, when it comes to substance misuse. We all need help in better understanding the problem of alcohol and drug use among young people and this is the first step towards a cohesive all-community approach. The Planet Youth community workshops will be held at Mount Gambier City Hall on February 26. South East bring home State cricket title

Back to back tons for Stratford East Gambier’s Dion Stratford has backed up his unbeaten 104 last round with another unbeaten ton at the weekend. Stratford’s 107 included five fours and 11 sixes from the 77 balls he faced, with his 96 run fourth wicket stand with Alex Hentschke, who was the perfect foil with his 40 from 44, leading the Bulldogs to an impressive 4/236. It was a bridge too far for West Gambier who managed only 6/174 from its 40 overs, with young guns Connor Prior and Josh Cornolo the pick of the West batsmen, both making 37. While with the ball Ben Clark and Ben Hentschke both took two wickets apiece for East to ensure the victory. Penola also had a comfortable victory after posting 4/232 and then dismissing Mil Lel for 90. Mark Smith top scored for the Eagles with 74, while openers Jase Bateman and Jack Mullan, who both scored 37, and an unbeaten 44 from George Kidman, ensured it was going to be a tough run chase for Mil Lel. Kidman (pictured right) then dominated with the ball, as well, taking 5.20 from his eight overs as Mil Lel never looked likely. Marist Park hosted the tightest contest of the Barber Shield round with North Gambier just holding off South by one run. The Tigers batted first and on the back of a stylish 79 from Jack Schutz posted 7/168 and despite some late hitting from South’s Robbie Drenthen (28no. from 17 balls) and a steadying 47 from Josh Thompson, South fell one run shy of North’s total. The South East has returned triumphant from the South Australian Senior Country Cup, bringing back the silverware after going through the event undefeated. The boys took on Yorke Peninsula in the opening round and courtesy of some tight bowling restricted Yorke Peninsula to 173. Tom Niuewerkerk led the way taking 4/33 from his 10 overs, while Luke Wiese was also impressive with 3/29 from his seven overs, that included three maidens. Tim Young was miserly with ball in hand, also sending down three maidens in his five over spell, conceding only 10 runs. South east chased down the victory target in only 34 overs with an unbeaten 89 from Matt McInerney the highlight. A solid 46 from Jack Schutz at the top of the order and an unbeaten 23 from Jake McGrice, who finished the job with McInerney, ensured the run chase was a simple one. In the second round, Eyre Peninsula won the toss and elected to bat but they were o match for the disciplined South east bowling attack. Young was again hard to get away but also was rewarded, finishing with 3/16, while young gun Sam Willis also made his mark, taking 3/26. This time it was Schutz taking the lead in the run chase, finishing with 71, while Nick McInerney (22no.) ensured the South East got over the line, with the winning runs

coming in the 41st over. For this first time in the championships, South East batted first in its round three clash with Fleurieu & District and in a performance that saw plenty of contributors, posted 213. Schutz (51) was again impressive at the top of the order, while star allrounder Adam Somerfield top scored with 59. Nick McInerney again provided some late hitting with a quickfire 24 from 16. Fleurieu & District was never really in the hunt as Luke Wiese took control with the ball, taking 4/43, while Mick Waters and Matt McInerney chipped in with two wickets apiece. South East batted first again in the final match of the carnival, finishing with 9/261 and setting Barossa & Light a tough run chase. Somerfield (60); Aidan Thatcher (43); Nick McInerney (33) were the pick of an even batting effort, while it was Nieuwerkerk again doing the damage with the ball, taking 4/52, with Somerfield showcasing all his skills, adding 2/13 from his 10 overs from his top score of 60 with the bat. Schutz, Matt McInerney and Somerfield all finished in the top 10 for the Champion Player Award, while the same trio were also in the top 10 run scorers of the Statewide event. Wiese and Nieuwerkerk were ranked in the top 10 bowlers.

LOCAL High quality 8 Ball on show at expanding competition SPORT The 2nd annual Mount Gambier German Club Square Mile Challenge eightball tournament was held January 31 - February 2. The event, which was proudly sponsored by local businesses the Blue Lake Motel and SE Bingo & Diamond Cue, will now be looking to expand next year to double the size and have two separate divisions, which will up the ante by making the competition stronger and tougher to win for all. There were 12 teams consisting of 72 players competing at this year’s event at the new look German Club - which is currently midway through an interior facelift and having improvements made inside and out all the time to improve the eightball and darts facilities - the word is sure to spread and get teams knocking on the door to nominate for 2021. A number of teams were made up of multiple current and/or former Victorian and South Australian State and Australian representatives which definitely made for some awesome pool. The weekend kicked off with the Friday night Singles Knockout, which was hotly contested by a record 55 entrants, partly thanks to the extra prize money donated by generous sponsor of the night EDI Developments. Shark Squad team member and former Victorian State representative and 2017 Victorian State Champion, Temujin Dixon, who has also been selected to play for Australia in the past and represented England - his home country - from 2008 through 2011, took the honours on the night when he defeated local stalwart and multipletime Australian Blackball - another cuesport with a slightly different rule set to eightball representative Mark Walker in the final. In third place was Jane Partridge (Shark Squad), and another of the top local players Dick Peters was fourth, both picking up a little prize money for their efforts.

On the Saturday morning the round-robin segment of the tournament began and amounted to around eight hours of play for the day. This was wound up on Sunday morning with local teams Commercial Club and The Waiters both finishing top of their respective groups. From there the top eight teams progressed to the finals and knockout stage of the competition which is basically a do-or-die scenario. Eliminated from the tournament in the quarter finals were Bordertown, Heyconham, which was a new team to the competition this year captained by Brett Pevitt, of Heywood, and made up of players from Heywood, Conda, and Hamilton, and local teams Gatecrashers and last year’s winner Different Strokes. who couldn’t quite maintain their form from 2019. Qualifying for the semi finals and last four standing were Commercial Club, The Waiters, last year’s runners-up Legends and Shark Squad. Shark Squad, the other new team for 2020, made up of players from Maryborough, Geelong, and Melbourne, including several State and national representatives, convincingly accounted for local team The Waiters, who were eliminated from the event at the same stage last year, although several frames could have easily gone the other way. In the other semi final, the strong Commercial Club outfit which included three Australian and two SA State Blackball reps just couldn’t quite get over the line when they faced 2019 runner-

up Legends who did well to progress to the grand final for the second year running. In the final and battle for the coveted perpetual trophy and prize money, the stacked Shark Squad (Steve “Rabbit” Landsborough (capt), Tem Dixon, Jane Partridge, Peta Robson, Dale Kent, Broe Shiells) - who definitely saved their best form for the finals - were just too strong on the day for the local team Legends (Matty Driscoll (capt), Chris Schembri, Jude Button, Sam Batty, Mick Hutchinson, John Slotegraaf) who put in a valiant effort but had no choice but to settle for second place once again. In addition to the finals on the Sunday, the scotch doubles Knock Out, which was kindly sponsored by The Top Rack, a company that manufacturers various items to assist players and umpires in the game of pool ,was also held while the semi and grand final of the teams event were played. German Club president Bob Huebner and Steven Wags, who hails from Bordertown, and plays for local independent team Different Strokes and last year’s winner of the main event managed to get over the line three frames to two when they faced off against local pair of Kaye and Simmo Simpson (also of Different Strokes) in a tough battle between good friends. In the individual awards for the weekend, Legends’ Chris Schembri and Shark Squad’s Temujin Dixon were the Player’s of the Tournament, while the Allstars Team was made up of Fred Newton (Commercial Club), Ian

Scown (Bordertown), Mark Walker (Commercial Club), David Johnson (Different Strokes), Dick Peters (Commercial Club), Toni Greenwood (Commercial Club), Karla Bowd (The Waiters), and Kaye Simpson (Different Strokes). Special mentions for local stalwarts Fred Newton and Dick Peters who both remained undefeated in the minor round in both singles and doubles, Tem Dixon, Bob Huebner (Gatecrashers), Ben Placucci (Gatecrashers), and Conrad Prentice (Sheep Stations), all of whom didn’t drop a frame in the singles, and also Mark Walker, Toni Greenwood, and Chase Daley (Different Strokes) who could not be beaten in their doubles games. The German Club believes in the inclusion of women in sport, especially eightball which has been a very male dominated sport in the past, which is why any team wanting to enter the tournament must consist of at least two female players and we think that makes for a more even and fun relaxed competition and atmosphere with a wider variety of players and also gives them the chance to strut their stuff on the big stage which is good for all. Female Player of the tournament and ex South Australian State rep Chris Schembri finished equal sixth overall amongst the best players while Allstars team members Toni Greenwood, Karla Bowd, and Kaye Simpson weren’t too far away either which just goes to show how competitive our local women players are. The support of our other local sponsors of the event, the Mount Gambier Commercial Club, and the SE Women’s Eightball League is very much appreciated by the German Club and the ongoing support will go a long way to help bolster the profile and success of the tournament in years to come. Warriors White win battle of the sister teams Warriors White were too good again for Warriors Blue as they charge towards the finals. White’s Erin Chaplin was solid as a rock pitching, only giving up seven hits with three of those to the ever-consistent Nicole Vause. Chaplin was robbed of a hit herself, smashing a line drive up the middle straight into the glove of her nemesis Leyna Bruggemann. Clare Chaplin was on song with two safe hits and Sarah Polderman hit a laser over left field to score four runs. Caitlin Bignall and Bek White chipped in with a hit

each for White. Blue’s Alison Schultz executed a perfect double play late in the game following the excellent fielding throughout the game by third base Simone MacDonald, who also hit a double scoring two. Emma MacDonald used her supreme speed for an infield single with Skylea Tindall and Daena Wombwell adding to their safe hit tally for the Blue’s season. White sealed the game with a sharp double play of their own through Taylor Wilsmore, snagging a line drive

hit by Kelly Doyle and tagging Wombwell diving back to third. LOCAL Bomber fan dives into training with Crows SPORT Let there be light

Member for Barker Tony Pasin MP has officially switched on new track lights at the Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club at the recent Matthews Petroleum 2020 Mount Gambier Pacing Gold Cup. The club received $20,000 funding through the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program to assist with the lighting upgrade project. Mr Pasin said he was pleased the Federal Government was supporting the Club with the infrastructure upgrades that would shine new light on Harness Racing events in Mount Gambier. He said the Stronger Communities program is aimed at funding projects that deliver social and economic benefits and form part of the Coalition Government’s continuing commitment to strengthen local communities across Australia. “Our local communities are the heart of this country and the investment in local projects under the Stronger Communities Programme is about just that – strengthening communities and ensuring they have the facilities and the infrastructure to remain vibrant, great places to live into the future,” Mr Pasin said. Above - Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club president Mick Lamond with Member for Barker Tony Pasin.

Eli Redman is determined to follow in his older brother Mason’s footsteps and live out his AFL dream. The 15 year old Millicent High School student started his football journey through the traditional Auskick path, as a five year old, before graduating to representing the Millicent Football Club as a seven year old. “. I was always at trainings with my brother and wanted to join in,” Eli said. Mason was that brother and in 2019 took great strides forward in his career, cementing a spot across half back for Essendon after an injury riddled start to his career (he was drafted in 2015) hampered his progress. But in his fledgling career, little brother Eli is making great strides, not just playing for his beloved Saints but also for St Anthony’s in the school competition as a primary school student as well as Western Border interleague representation. That Western Border effort led to Eli’s selection in the Glenelg Academy and that was the final step to seeing him selected as part of the Adelaide Crows Academy. “I was lucky enough to perform well at interleague last year representing WBFL which resulted in Glenelg nominating me for the Academy,” Eli said. “I’d

also performed consistently throughout the season and was a part of the Talented Tigers development squad locally for Glenelg.” And taking his training and game to a new level has been a major benefit of the sessions with the Adelaide Crows Academy.” I’ve enjoyed having the AFL coaches during the sessions guiding me and helping me to improve my footy with their experience and knowledge,” he said. “It’s been good meeting new players from both the city and country and being able to compete at a higher level. Each session is different and we focus on different areas of the game and techniques. They help us to analyse what we do and how to improve and get better by giving us feedback and advice.” An Essendon supporter, Eli is also a fan of Fremantle’s Nat Fyfe and the way he goes about his football. “I like Nat Fyfe because he plays mid field and is very talented and good to watch,” he said. At this stage of his career, Eli is a hard running midfielder and for now, at least, that’s where he wants to stay. “The position I have mainly played is midfield and I enjoy that because I’m good at it and I can play all over the oval.”

Reigning premiership coach to take on South East zone top job Reigning Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League coach Michael Hunt is excited about the talent he will have at his disposal as he heads up the South East zone’s SA Country Women’s Football Championships in Kadina this July. The Mundulla coach, who is in his second season at the helm of the club for which he played more than 500 games, believes the standard of the local competition in the two years he has been involved has improved markedly. “It is the speed with which the players are improving this year,” Hunt said. “Last year at Mundulla, in our first year in the competition, I had a team of players who had never played before and even then I was stunned with how quick their skills improved but this year, the new players are improving even more quickly and I think that’s because they are playing alongside

their peers who have a season under their belt and that is helping speed up that improvement – it has definitely been even quicker this season. They are learning off their team mates.” Hunt has not just been focussing on Mundulla’s title defence but also casting an eye over who might make the cut for the South East team and he believes every team has three or four players that would be up to taking their game to the next level. “In some teams there would be five or six,” Hunt said. The challenge for the South East coach is which players will be available for what is an out of season weekend of football for local players, many of whom are committed to netball, soccer or hockey during the winter months. Hunt is hoping to devise a system where the South East group trains together sporadically, with northern and southern

sessions held more frequently. “I realise life has to go on and we don’t want to make it so much of a commitment that players can’t be involved,” Hunt said. “But you do have to get to know your team mates and work together or you will never be successful.” But the improvement in the competition overall, with the sides that have struggled in their first season or two now putting a much more competitive team on the park, Hunt knows he will have a strong pool of players to mould into a potentially championship winning team at the Kadina event, which will see South east girls up against five other country zones and run in conjunction with the men’s championships. The appointment of assistant coaches and support staff will be completed soon and an initial training squad and training dates will also be announced shortly.

RECORD FIELD FOR SEASIDE GOLF EVENT A record crowd of 97 South East Golf Veterans visited Robe to play the club’s new holes, and were greeted with a pretty windy day, but nevertheless everybody agreed it was worthwhile trip. The new six holes are wide in the fairways but have challenges everywhere and the greens have nuances that are hard to read. The tee blocks are elevated making it very picturesque. First Division was won by Vyv Bennison, of Millicent, with 37 points, from two Robe stalwarts on 36, Gordon Fleming and Peter DeLaine. Second Division was taken out by Bob Tonkin, of Attamurra, on 35, from Arthur

Niejalke, of Kingston, and Dougie Mullen, of Attamurra. The evergreen Roy Mitchell and Peter Vile won the NTP’,s, and Roger Gulin and Graham Pilgrim won the Ross Orchard trophy. The ball rundown was for 30 points or better. Bob Tonkin couldn’t believe his luck when he also won the scotch and will use it to celebrate his first win in Veterans. The next outing is at Port MacDonnell on February 17 where a good feed is guaranteed.
