COVER - SUMMER FUN AT THE MAC’S HOTEL BIG APPLE SECRET GARDEN Now in its fourth year, The Mac’s Hotel Big Apple Secret Garden is back and looks set to again be the centrepiece of summer festivities for this region. The New York themed garden has been transformed with new white picket fences, green grass and mature trees have created a garden sanctuary for groups and events this summer and staff are ready and waiting to make this year’s Secret Garden experience the best yet. “We have invested in a semipermanent structure that is likely to be our most successful garden setup yet,” operations manager Adam Nicholls said. “We’re continuing to find ways to improve the experience for patrons and stay current with our offering.” Tanqueray and Gordon’s Pink Gin will be a focus of the Big Apple Secret Garden, along with the ultimate summer drink – Pimm’s – and a selection of regional wines. At the weekends, things will be kicked up a notch with cocktail slushies on offer. Aside from encouraging patrons to make use of the stunning space every day of the week, The Mac’s Hotel Big Apple Secret Garden will also host a number of its, now traditional, major events. No need to go to the beach this New Year’s Eve - The Mac’s Hotel is bringing you its Big Apple Block Party

December 31 with DJ Mash playing the best of the 90’s to Now and plenty of great drink specials. On Sunday, February 9, it is all about cocktails and food with the Spritz Festival. There will a garden tasting of a range of spritz cocktails with food specials and outdoor entertainment and it will be a perfect day for an Aperol Spritz. The Family Fun Day has proven to be a hit with patrons since its introduction as part of the Big Apple Secret Garden with Jamie & Kim’s Mobile Zoo, a mechanical bull, face painting, kids disco and a special performance from the Hype Dance Studio. “We love our Macs family fun day, it’s a great opportunity to bring the community together with a special day for Mount Gambier families and children,” Kylie Little said. The family Fun Day is on Sunday, February 23. The fourth season of The Mac’s Hotel Big Apple Secret Garden finishes up by being one of the hottest venues for the Fringe Mount Gambier, which runs from March 20-29 next year. “We’re excited to conclude our garden season with the Fringe Mt Gambier and various comedy act, such as Granny Flaps – the garden is the perfect space to make the most fringe experience,” manager Caroline Hubber said.

including Whyalla, Streaky Bay and Kimba. Following the visits KESAB judge Alex Hammett recommended to the KESAB Board that Mount Gambier be crowned the overall South Australian winner. “Mount Gambier’s entry embraced initiatives by the City of Mount Gambier and many groups within the community,” Mr Hammet said. “Throughout the entry, the commitment, spirit, hard work and cohesiveness of the community was evident and this makes Mount Gambier a shining example of sustainable communities.” To qualify for the overall town awards an entry must have projects in six categories, including the compulsory category - community action and partnerships. “Mount Gambier showcased a number of sustainability initiatives as part of their submission but it is not just the big council projects that contribute to the win,” Mr Hammett said. “Community initiatives like Recycled Runway, initiatives in schools to tackle waste, volunteer work in the Valley Lakes Conservation Park rounded out the initiatives such as the ReUse Market and Rail Trail projects from Council that cement the win for Mount Gambier as a whole.” The KESAB Sustainable Communities program started as Tidy Towns in 1978 and has grown to be an iconic South Australian environmental education and action program.

“City of Mount Gambier has a long history with Tidy Towns, and more recently Sustainable Communities, and will now represent South Australia at the National KESAB Awards being held in Alice Springs in April 2020,” City of Mount Gambier environmental sustainability officer Aaron Izzard said. City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM attributed the success to the proactive work of both council staff and the community. “We are thrilled to be judged the 2019 KESAB Sustainable Communities winner,” Mahyor Martin said. W”e are very excited about representing South Australia at the national awards. Well done and thank you to the community for contributing to making Mount Gambier a really community minded and sustainable city.”

The submission for the award covered various sustainability efforts that were both community and council led including the Gambusia eradication at the Railway Lands catchment area, installation of solar power and LED lighting, heritage and education initiatives and community events. “A special thanks to the initiatives of Recycled Runway, Tenison Woods College, Community Action for Sustainability, Natural Resources South East, Nature Glenelg Trust, Independent Learning Centre, local Rotary Clubs, and the Valley Lakes Conservation Park volunteers for their contributions to making our city more sustainable, “ Mr Izzard said. According to KESAB CEO John Phillips the Sustainable Communities program is about people getting together to help their local towns, schools and businesses to provide a better place to live, work and play and a place where visitors are delighted to go and locals want to stay. “It’s about protecting, conserving, managing and improving South Australia’s resources and natural environment,” Mr Phillips said.

FUNDRAISER HELPS ON ROAD TO RECOVERY Nathan Foote might have been cruelled by a life changing accident in March this year but he still thrives in the high octane environment of motorsport and earlier this month he was taken on a surprise trip to Melbourne to the Aus X Open. Organised by good mate Josh Burdon, who was with Nathan when he suffered his injuries and has been by his side ever since, Nathan not only enjoyed the high energy motocross show but also had the chance to meet two of the sport’s biggest stars - Chad Reed and Ricky Carmichael. “It was really good just to get away with a couple of mates and I had never been to Melbourne before,” Nathan said. The trip was not without its drama, with Nathan caught in the doors of a train at one stage but the boys laugh about it now. “A few blokes jumped in and helped,” Nathan said. The surprise trip came a month after Nathan’s closest family and friends had organised a fundraiser for the young family to assist with medical bills and other associated costs with Nathan’s accident. “There was a really good turnout,” Nathan said. “Josh (Burdon) was there with the bikes and we had more than 75 items donated for the auction and so many people worked so hard to put it together for me.” Bernie Manser, Kristy Sneath, Elisha Beare & Jess Foote headed up a core group that organised the day of entertainment and fundraising with Kane Stuckey, Unhinged and Rhys Latchford providing the music at the event. “Aaron Davis also organised the bar and let us use the venue which was really great as well and Pick Avenue Deli donated the bread – so many people were just so happy to give,” Nathan said. The fundraiser was successful and has certainly been a help for the young family while Nathan still has a Go Fund Me page where people can donate. It was in March this year that Nathan Foote was out riding in the sand dunes of Canunda National Park. An experienced rider, he had just started getting back into the past time after a hiatus, but March 30 turned out to be a memorable day for all the wrong reasons after an accident that has left the new father in a wheelchair. “When it happened I thought I had just winded myself and said I will get up in a minute,” Nathan said. Then he realised he just couldn’t get up and so began an agonising six hour wait for help to arrive, with Nathan eventually ending up in Adelaide, where he has spent the past six months before returning to Mount Gambier for a five week stint in the local hospital and now, thankfully, he is now back in his home with partner Shelly Manser and son Riley.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 43… By ROBBIE TANSEL Don’t know if people are thinking I’m Santa at the moment. Seem to be getting a few emails from people wanting me to solve their problems. In the spirit of Christmas, I guess I should give it a go. “Dear Robbie, I had a problem. I had a problem with dog poo. Dogs leave their bodily waste in front of my house on a regular basis. Each week when I mow my lawn, my boots, mower blades or mower tyres seem to collide with the mess that man’s best friend leaves behind. At first, it was only once a season, then once a month, but lately it became once a day. I got so angry with the slimy mess embedded in the tread of my boots that I needed to put a stop to it once and for all. I decided to buy a sign. It read ‘No Pooping. This is my yard, not your dog’s toilet!’ It also had a picture of a dog with its back hunched, backing out a cable, with a red circle and line through it. Picture the Ghostbusters symbol but with a dog pooping instead of the ghost. I thought this would be the end to my problems. I payed the money through Evil-bay and waited for my confirmation email…estimated delivery, Tuesday 19th November – Tuesday 17th December. Where is this sign coming from??? Outer space?

Thankfully the slow boat from China came this week. I only had to wait four weeks. In that time I counted seventeen defecations. Not sure it was all from the same animal family. There may have been crustacean and possibly equine, but the common Labrador was apparent. Finally my sign had arrived in the mail. It wasn’t as big or strong as I imagined, but the message was there nonetheless. Thursday, I mounted that sign out the front of my house. During that time guilt set in. Was I too bitter? Did I

need to advertise that I was angry? Can dogs read signs? What if it was a lost dog busting for a poo, and he found my yard as a safe place? Oh dear! It’s too late now. My children hold me in high regard for my morals. I can’t pull it down now. Stand strong young man. Go through with it. Friday morning I checked my yard. No dog poop. Wow! I think the sign is working. People and dogs are respecting me. What a story to tell the kids! Let’s wait another day to ensure that this isn’t a once off. Saturday morning, no poop…but

I have a supermarket trolley dumped underneath the sign. So my question, Robbie, is what do I do now? Please help me. Do you know where I can buy a sign that says ‘No dumping trolleys. This is my yard, not a supermarket’? Evil-bay are all out of stock due to the Christmas period. Won’t be in until Valentines Day 2020. Ashley from Apsley” My first reaction, Ashley, is that I’m a bit disappointed in myself. As I read your story I worked out in my head what I thought was going to be the conclusion or punchline to the story. I thought it was going to end with you finding one of your children pooping on the front lawn. At the very least, I thought we were going to maybe find that it was a wallaby or something was the animal pooping. That whole shopping trolley thing was a real twist. I felt like I was watching an M. Night Shyamalan movie.

My second reaction would be that instead of setting up a sign, I think you should be getting some sort of a video surveillance setup. Catch the perp in the act. I think what’s probably happened, is that after reading your sign, the dogs have gotten together and decided they’re going to mess with you. They’ve then gone and grabbed a shopping trolley, which they dumped in your front yard. If you want to pinpoint what dog or dogs have done it, I’d be thinking Guide Dogs can read signs. They have to be able to read to help blind people, don’t they? That should help narrow it down. Apart from that, my suggestion would be, how about digging a moat around your property. Crocodiles are probably not compulsory additions in the moat, but couldn’t hurt. If you’ve got a recent address for Santa that Ashley could use to write a letter and possibly get his trolley sign sooner, email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com

SENSITIVE SANTA SESSIONS FOR FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

FEDERAL MEMBER HANDS OVER DONATION

One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! In four and a half hours of alone time, it’s amazing what you can find out about yourself.

I’d rate myself a 9 out of 10 for companionship (I’m funny too), 6 out of 10 for chattiness (there’s only so much of the conversation I can hold up by myself) and 10 out of 10 for knowing the words to every Leo Sayer song. I have discovered that with the windows up and no companions to restrict my vocals (Mr Two Year Old is not a fan), I am a truly sensational singer. Brilliant, in fact. The notes I hit with a few of those Leo numbers were truly memorable.

The Mount Gambier Marketplace is getting ready to roll out the red carpet when Santa Claus comes to town, but the big man in red and his reindeers won’t be the only VIP guests. Mount Gambier Marketplace will once again be offering Sensitive Santa visits for families with special needs children in the lead up to Christmas. Sensitive Santa Sessions give families in our community with special needs children the opportunity to visit Santa in a low stress environment before general trade commences. There will be no music, spotlights or queues, and noise levels will be kept down during these private sessions. Having a photo with Santa can be a difficult thing for families of children

facing illness or other challenges, so we are offering them their very own visit away from peak-hour groups, in a wheelchair and pram-friendly environment. Some of these children will be meeting Santa for the very first time, and we are absolutely thrilled to be able to give families such a memorable gift this festive season. Places are still available during the Sensitive Santa session prior to trading on Sunday, December 22, from 8-10am. The sessions are free of charge. Booking is essential for the 10 minute sessions by contacting Centre Management during business hours on (08)8724 8798.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin handed over his contributions to the Mount Gambier Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal last week and is encouraging others tro do the same. “It’s a really busy time of year for everyone as we attempt to get things at work tided up before taking leave and spending time with friends and family, but it’s important to take the time to remember the true spirit of Christmas and help those in our community who might be doing it tough,” Mr Pasin said. “Donating to a cause like the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is a great way to do that. I make the effort to donate to local appeals across Barker at Christmas; initiatives like this where the funds are sourced and distributed locally.

I have discovered that I can live on a diet of dinosaur jellies, a couple of Cheezels and can of Coke (most consumed within the first 10 minutes of trying to get out of the service station carpark) without feeling violently ill. I have discovered that I can carry on a perfect conversation with myself, complete with hand movements and witty comebacks. So good, that half an hour later I was still laughing at some of my retorts. Hmmm. On reflection, maybe I should start worrying about myself. It may be a case of one too many Leo songs for this little traveller - I don’t think I should drive alone anymore.

“By donating to the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal I know that the donation is going to local agencies that will help meet the local demand for support at Christmas time.” Mr Pasin is encouraging anyone wanting to make a donation to the appeal to do so by phoning the City of Mount Gambier on (08)8721 2555 or in person at the Civic Centre on Watson Terrace. During a recent trip back from Melbourne, I had the opportunity to enjoy an abundance of my own company – and not only was I able to find my own way home (once I got out of that tricky service station), I was actually quite happy with my in-car performance.

PLENTY OF PROJECTS ON THE GO AT MEN’S SHED

COUNTDOWN IS ON TO FESTIVAL

The Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed continues to provide a place for local men to participate in woodwork projects, play a hand of cards or billiards and catch up for a coffee in an atmosphere of mateship. Always looking for new ideas and experimenting with various local and interstate timbers, the Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed members are working on a new initiative, making toggles for craypots that recreational and professional fisherman can purchase. Available to purchase at $1 each one is made by hand on site and the toggles enable to fisherman to secure the bait basket inside the pot. They also sell bags of kindling, a popular enterprise that nets the group approximately $3000 per year and at $9 a bag, it’s a bargain and the best timber around for lighting a fire. Items made by the Men’s Shed are sold at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex, the Port MacDonnell General Store and the Men’s Shed directly on Elizabeth Street. All funds raised go back into community projects as well as providing upgrades to tools and facilities for the members. The group has also completed the restoration of a derelict billiard table which they will use for social activities. Over the course of many months each member of the group has had some involvement in the restoration, producing a beautiful and high quality result.

Prepare to be entertained by a rock icon, learn how to lure a prized catch and dine on the best food and wine as the countdown begins for regional Victoria’s biggest seafood and fishing celebration. The Hooked on Portland festival returns to the city foreshore on the January long weekend with a new social media video highlighting the busy schedule which is headlined by Noiseworks and INXS frontman Jon Stevens. Stevens, a self-proclaimed fishing nut, is looking forward to testing his luring skills in Portland Bay before headlining the main stage on Saturday, January 25, where he promises to play all of the classics such as No Lies, Love Somebody, Take me Back and Touch. Fresh from performing on his national tour, Stevens said fans had been going wild when the iconic songs were played. “We have all grown up listening to those songs,” he said. “They are great songs and they should still be heard live. Andrew Farris (INXS keyboardist) came to one of our recent shows and told me I need to play more INXS songs. So, with his blessing, and the continual requests from fans, it is Noiseworks and INXS all the way. That is all you are going to hear, songs from your youth, and songs you grew up with – iconic songs from both bands.” Stevens proclaimed his job “is to make sure everyone has the maximum best time possible”.

Men’s Sheds are amazing places for mateship, socialisation and creativity. In 2013 Beyond Blue release a report into the positive and powerful effect Men’s Sheds have on the physical and mental wellbeing of members. It is clear to see that the Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed is a place of learning and passing on of skills amongst friends, generating a sense of purpose and community spirit. The Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed is open Tuesday and Thursday and

is located at Elizabeth Street, Port MacDonnell. New members are always welcome and more information can be found by emailing the club at ms13pmd@hotmail.com Above - Reg Gurney at the Port MacDonnell Men’s Shed.

Preparing for the summer tourist inundation, Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the event was earmarked as of the biggest free attractions on the Great Ocean Road this summer. “Nowhere else in regional Victoria will you get to see an Aussie rock legend, like Jon Stevens, play for free. We are extremely proud to partner with the Victorian Fisheries Authority to offer two jam-packed days of entertainment on our beautiful foreshore,” Cr Rank said. “Featuring fishing and markets, an interactive youth zone, the Bonney Bar with wine and delicious local seafood highlighted in cooking masterclasses; there is something to tempt all taste buds, ages and abilities. I strongly urge people to secure their accommodation now because rooms will book out. Some of our biggest accommodation providers are already reporting they are close to capacity that weekend.” To see the latest digital promotion visit the Hooked on Portland Facebook page.

4 Free Range Egg whites 1 cup (220g) caster sugar 2 tsp cornflour 1 tsp white vinegar 3/4 cup (185ml) thickened cream Icing sugar, to dust Thickened cream, whipped, to serve Mango slices, to serve Mint leaves, to serve Passionfruit pulp, to serve LEMON & LIME CURD 50g butter 1/2 cup (110g) caster sugar

1 Free Range Egg 1 1/2 tbs lemon juice 1 1/2 tbs lime juice 1 tsp finely grated lemon rind 1 tsp finely grated lime rind

Method To make the lemon and lime curd, place the butter, sugar, egg, lemon juice, lime juice, lemon rind and lime rind in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5 mins or until the mixture comes to a simmer and thickens. Strain through a fine sieve into a heatproof bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 2 hours to chill. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a 24cm x 30cm Swiss roll pan and line with baking paper, allowing the sides to overhang. Use an electric mixer to whisk the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl until firm peaks form. Gradually add the sugar, 1 tbs at a time, whisking constantly until the sugar dissolves and mixture is thick and glossy. Add the cornflour and vinegar and use a metal spoon to gently fold until combined. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for 10 mins or until the meringue is starting to brown. Place a clean tea towel on a clean work surface. Top the tea towel with a sheet of baking paper and lightly dust with cornflour. Carefully turn the pavlova, top-side down, onto the dusted baking paper. Set aside for 20 mins to cool. Use a clean electric mixer to whisk the cream in a medium bowl until firm peaks form. Add half the lemon and lime curd and swirl with a spoon to gently marble. Spread the cream mixture evenly over the pavlova. Starting from 1 short end, carefully roll the pavlova to enclose the filling. Wrap with baking paper and place on a baking tray in the fridge for 1 hour to chill. Unwrap the pavlova. Transfer to a serving platter. Dust with the icing sugar. Top with the extra whipped cream and spoon over some of the remaining lemon and lime curd. Arrange the mango and mint over the pavlova. Drizzle with the passionfruit pulp and serve immediately with the remaining lemon and lime curd.

The Portland Foreshore will be the place to be this Christmas Eve to celebrate the exciting final hours before Christmas, with a line-up of local music and family friendly entertainment on offer to help spread the festive cheer. Hosted by the Glenelg Shire Council, the free Christmas Eve event will provide a night of Christmas music, food and fun against the stunning backdrop of the Portland harbour from 5.30pm to 8pm. A traditional favourite, this year’s event will be headlined by local band Sleuth, with an array of amusement rides and food trucks also available on the night. Glenelg Shire Council Mayor Cr Anita Rank encouraged families to bring along their own picnic basket, blanket and chair to enjoy the festivities. “Get settled for a night of live music, with a variety of musical acts singing your favourite Christmas classics and their own unique spin on some favourite festive songs, Cr Rank said. “Children will be entertained all night long, with an array of giant inflatables and amusements on offer, including the giant slide, jumping castle and an activity centre. Cr Rank said the evening would also include a special visit from the jolly red man himself. “Best of all, Santa Claus will arrive in fashion on a red fire truck to spread the festive cheer with families before setting off to begin his Christmas deliveries throughout the shire, she said. “This popular event is a staple on our events calendar, with more than 2000 people enjoying the pre-Christmas entertainment in 2018. I hope to see even more families this year to celebrate the festive season with carols, amusements and more. For further information on the Christmas Eve on the Foreshore event please visit council’s website or Facebook page.

SPORT TIGHT TUSSLES IN DIVISION ONE BASEBALL The run of tight games continued in the weekend’s Division One baseball with Central defeating South and Federals downing Tigers, both games ending with two to one results. Friday night’s game saw both starting pitchers dominate from the start. South’s Dean Hamilton allowed just two runners in the first five innings while Koby Chant for Centrals was well backed up by his fielders, holding South scoreless in his seven innings on the mound. South failed to capitalise on their best scoring opportunity, leaving bases loaded in the third. Central opened the scoring in the top of the sixth. Nathan Meinck was hit by a pitch, then with two out, consecutive hits to Dylan Chuck and Brock Keding saw two runners cross the plate. Chuck replaced Chant on the mound for Central in the eighth and South took immediate advantage of a lapse in the Central fielding. Two errors and a walk saw South scramble a run on Brian Whitwell’s hit to the pitcher. Neither side could add to their score in the final innings, South leaving the tying run stranded on third in the bottom of the ninth. While Central took the win, they would consider themselves rather fortunate. Both sides had five hits but South didn’t make the most of numerous scoring opportunities leaving 11runners stranded on base during the game. Saturday night’s game between Federals and Tigers turned out very similar to Friday night’s game. Pitchers Alex Reppin and Karl Ransom had the better of the hitters early in the game with both defences holding firm. It took until the top of the seventh for Federals to open the scoring. A Gavin Smith triple, followed by a single to Clay Carpenter saw Federals with the lead. Tigers fought back in the bottom of the eighth. Brayden Morton forced an infield error, stole both second and third, and tied the score when he crossed on Ransom’s sacrifice bunt. In the top of the ninth it was again Smith and Carpenter that came to the fore. Smith singled and Federals took the lead when he scored on Carpenter’s left field double. Tigers were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth leaving Federals 2 to 1 victors. CONCORDES TEAMS PUT ON A REAL SHOW It was a highly competitive match between the two Concordes sides who are both vying for finals berths this season. The first three innings were dominated by great pitching by White’s Anna Livingston and United’s Billie Jones, Through three innings United were without a safe hit, and white had only 2, as the pitchers were well backed up by clean fielding by their team mates. United however were first to hit the scoreboard, as aggressive base running by Dana Jones paid off when a Sacrifice fly by sister Codie Jackway saw her cross the plate. White were finally able to reply in the fourth, when Livingston crossed the plate thanks to a line drive RBI from Brandi Miller. The fifth innings however was a wild ride which defied the trend of the first four. United finally got on to Livingston, and consecutive safe hits from Billie Jones, Nashemia McNamara, Sarah Pilven and Hannah Taylor all linked up to put 5 runs on the board and looked like it would ice the game for United. White however were determined to finish 2019 on a high, and came out firing in the bottom of the innings. Three consecutive doubles by Megan Wombwell, Jo Hopgood and Maddy Sutherland started the scoring, and pressured United into a number of fielding errors. White were down to their last out while still 4 runs behind but rallied behind second safe hits of the innings to Wombwell and Sutherland to snatch the game at the death, 8 runs to 6. The game between Wanderers and warriors Blue was unfortunately required to be postponed, after a serious injury to a player saw the ambulance called and play halted. In a terrific show of sportsmanship and class both teams did their cheers together and will resume play in the new year. In the final game of the year, Demons were too good for Warriors White in a match where pitcher Montana Millard again dominated the batters with 6 strike outs and only 2 safe hits against her. Best with the bat for Demons were Rhiannon Mathers with 3 safe hits, and Montana Millard and Cody Manning with 2 a piece. Best for the bat for Warriors were Justine Koop and Bri Dunn with a safe hit each. RESULTS Concordes White 8 (J Hopgood, M Sutherland, A Livingston, S Brown , M Wombwell 2, B Miller) d Concordes United 6 (B Jones, N McNamara, S Pilven, H Taylor) Demons 8 (R Mathers 3, C Mannin, Montana Millard 2, Mackenzie Millard, I Morale, K Cawthorne, J Morale, C Lavia) d Warriors White 1 (J Koop, B Dunn); Wanderers v Warriors Blue - postponed

SPORT BRYANT TAKES OUT FINAL SPRING RACE

The Mount Gambier Cycling Club wound up its Spring Series with a 50km Christmas race earlier this month that ncluded invited interstate competitors from Hamilton, Port Fairy and the South West district. Racing conditions were far from usual with cyclists contending with high temperatures but this did not stop the large field of 20 adding the heat to each other and pushing their reserves over the rolling course to Donovans and back. The race was kindly sponsored by club members Matthew Opperman, Rob Mann and Paul Brooker, which enabled prize money and a winning trophy to be presented. The juniors also raced over a 10km course and all four were also rewarded with incentive prizes. Final results for the top five were Dave Bryant, who recorded the fastest time, Rohan Garfoot, Rob Mann, Matthew Opperman and Ryan Menzel, who was also first junior. The first female across the line was Pam Menzel, with Jackie Barnett and Pru Riddoch completing a strong field of women competitors. The race finished off with Christmas celebrations of a BBQ lunch and presentations to prize winners.

The club wishes to thank all their generous supporters and volunteers who contributed to a successful and entertaining race series. NATIONAL SUCCESS LEADS TO WORLD STAGE Mount Gambier local Sidai Anthony Baseley achieved national success recently, following a two day national martial arts tournament in Port Macquarie, New South Wales. Sidai Anthony qualified for the Australian Martial Arts Championships (AMAC) Australian Titles for 2019 through a Melbourne tournament in July – an event in which he was awarded three podium finishes from three events. Sidai Anthony discovered a love of martial arts during high school after being encouraged by a friend to join a local kung fu school. Eighteen years later, Sidai Anthony is now the second in charge of Jik Cheung Kung Fu Australia – the only kung fu school in Mount Gambier. He is also an experienced tournament competitor, regularly travelling interstate to compete against other martial artists from various styles. Qualifying for the Australian Titles for the first time through the AMAC tournament circuit, Sidai Anthony travelled to Port Macquarie to compete in traditional forms (kata), traditional weapon forms and full contact sparring. With more than 300 competitors from around Australia and New Zealand, competition was fierce. Six tournament rings were in progress at any given moment, and the vocal support for the athletes created an electric atmosphere for those competing. Sidai Anthony achieved top 10 finishes in both his traditional weapon form and his traditional open hand form, but his greatest success came in the full contact sparring (heavyweight division). On the second day of competition, there was originally one bout scheduled for this weight category, but both Sidai Anthony and his opponent agreed with a referee suggestion to bring a teenage competitor up to the adult class, as his age group did not have a bout suitable. The first bout was an even affair with referees unable to determine a victor following the first round. With a momentary break, a second round was commenced to determine the victor. Despite excellent competition, Sidai

Anthony came away victorious with a unanimous vote from the judges. The second bout was against the competitor from the lower age division, and required a flexible approach due to changes in the contact levels allowed and some borrowed shin guards. Despite a noble effort, Sidai Anthony was unable to maintain his intensity, and in a 2-1 decision his opponent was declared victorious. With the result of the other bout also going to the young competitor, Sidai Anthony was awarded second place overall. Sidai Anthony demonstrated the true spirit of martial arts, providing positive feedback and coaching to his opponent after the bout. Due to his outstanding effort in attending and placing at the Australian Titles, Sidai Anthony has now qualified for the World All-Styles Championships to be held in Caldas Da Rainha, Portugal, in April next year.

SOUTH EAST VETERANS GOLF The field at Millicent was 68 for the most recent South East Golf Veterans outing. The First Division was fought out by two Millicent locals with Allan Schultz and Brian Duldig both posting 37 points, with Allan winning the countback. Doug Robbins, another local, had 36, for third. Second Division went to Trevor Hutchesson, of Millicent, with the best score of the day, 41, from Wayne Peters 40, and Lindsay Duckworth, 36. The NTPs were won by Pat Dempsey and Wally Altschwager and the Ross Orchard Trophy was taken out by John Kirby and Tony Bishop. Thirty-two points or better got you a golf ball. Allan Schultz topped off a good day with the Scotch, pulling out his own name. The next outing is at Kingston on January 13 with a four tee hitoff at 9.30am and the promise of fish and chips for lunch.

SPORT YOUNG LOCALS SHINE AT GIFT

MILLICENT WINS CLUB EXCELLENCE AWARD

The return of the Mount Gambier Gift to Vansittart part after a few years absence proved to be the perfect showpiece for two of the region’s youngest athletes with Mount Gambier’s Leila Croker and Keith’s Isabel Ross impressing on the professional track. Leila won her heat and then the final to take out the Under 14 120m Gift. Running off 11.75m, Leila completed her heat win in 14.382 and ran only slightly slower than that in the decider to greet the judge first in a time of 14.418. Leila also ran in the Under 18 550 , running that in a time of 1:20:56 to finish inside the top 10. Isabel was also impressive in her packed program that saw her compete in the Under 18 and Open 120m Gift. Isabel won her Under 18 heat in a time of 14.368, running off 10.75m, and despite going slightly faster in the final, 14.366, she was just pipped at the post by Eliza Woolley, who added second place in the Open 120m Gift to her Under 18 title. Isabel was pitted against eventual winner Ilana Grandine in her heat and finished a credible fourth to find her way into the semi finals, where she again was in Grandine’s final as she ran off 9m, and while she did not make the final, her runs certainly turned heads against the much more experienced competitors. The main events – the Men’s and Women’s 120m Gifts went to Grandine, a Victorian based runner, who is on the comeback trail to professional running, with Bryce Watkins taking the men’s event. Grandine competed the double, taking home the 70m Women’s Gift as well, with Luke Houlihan winning the men’s event. There was local interest in plenty of the events with Amechai Bawden, who finished fifith, and Finn Johnson tackling the 1600m Backmarkers, with Lucindale’s Nikki Smart backing up from her Blue Lake Fun Run victory to finish fifth in the 1600m Frontmarkers event. Bawden also ran the 550m Men’s Backmarkers. Gui Ross, Ba Na Sai and Daniel Crowe competed in the Under 18 Boys 120m Gift and all made the final.

Anyone who has competed in or followed the Western Border Netball Association for the past two decades is all too aware of the resurgence of Millicent and its powerhouse status across senior and junior netball in the association. Now the rest of South Australia will know with the successful club taking out the 2019 Netball SA Club Excellence Award. Factoring in on court success with coaching and umpiring accreditation, STARCLUB status and other club development strategies and programs, the Saints ranked the top of the State. The club’s six 2019 premierships, NetSetGo program, STARCLUB participation, badged umpires and accredited coaches saw the club tally the most points of any club in South Australia. It sees the Saints $2000 richer heading

into 2020. “We have not nominated before but every club can always do with extra funds so with $2000 on the line, we decided to place a nomination,” premiership player and coach Donna Denton said. “Everyone works so hard on and off the court and it is just reward for all our players, officials and volunteers to be honoured with the Netball SA Club Excellence Award.” Above (main) - 2019 A Grade premiership team & (inset) 13 & Under A premiership team

SPORT BULLDOGS LURE NEW COACH She was a revelation in her debut season of Western Border netball, helping push West Gambier to a second placing in the home and away rounds before bowing out in the preliminary final and narrowly finishing runner up in the best and fairest count to Tenille Gray. Now former Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara netballer Emily Hunter has set herself a new challenge – playing coach at East Gambier. Securing the services of the 22 year old is a huge coup for the Bulldogs, who while they are set to lose Sara Smith to study, will welcome back defender Bo Creek and can now add Hunter to their mid court stocks. Arguably the biggest beneficiary of Hunter’s move will be star mid courter Tarsh McCallum. McCallum has coached the line-up in tandem with team mates over the past three seasons but the chance to refocus on her own game, which has seen her part of the Western Border Team of the Year, and perhaps move to the wing attack role, where she is just so damaging, will add a new lease of life to the 2019 SA Country Championship winning team member. Kudos to East Gambier management that flagged the coaching role with Hunter. “I got the call in regards to coaching and playing at East and I had a meeting with them, including football coach Matt Willson and a few of the netball girls,” Hunter said. “I definitely kept West in the loop the whole time and they were great about me pursuing this new opportunity. I really enjoyed my season at West and have a lot of respect for the club but I guess coaching had always been in the back of my mind. I just probably didn’t think it would happen this soon. I am very excited to have been able to accept the position.” Hunter comes into the role with no senior coaching experience but she did coach at 15 & Under level at her original club, Naracoorte, and assisted with West’s 17 & Under team this season. “I am sure it will be a challenge but it is a challenge I am looking forward to,” Hunter said. She was expecting a similar line-up to the Bulldogs 2019 team but was ready to work with whatever group of players trials, which are early February, throws up. “Regardless of who ends up in the team I

know it will be an exciting group to work with and hopefully we will be competitive,” she said. Her stint in the Western Border Netball Association’s A Grade representative team at the 2019 SA Country Championships, where she was part of the winning combination and was named in the Championship Top 10, saw her make those connections with some of the East players with Tenille Gray, Morgan Amy and Tarsh McCallum all part of that line up. “We did become friends after playing together so that certainly made it an easier decision to make the move,” Hunter said. She has always prided herself on being a team player but realises as the playing coach, her concern for the other six players on court and awareness of how they are playing and what needs to happen will be heightened but she is keen to be challenged in that way. “And I have the experience of Tarsh (McCallum) in the team and obviously Tenille (Gray) is the best player in the league and I am really looking forward to playing with her and I might look to have a team manager that can be a sounding board on the sidelines as well,” Hunter said. Pre-season training will start early next year. Above - 2020 East Gambier A Grade coaches Emily Hunter (netball) & Matt Willson (football)

PREMIERSHIP TIGER BECOMES A CAT When Brad Close was growing up as an Adelaide Crows supporter, he idolised Patrick Dangerfield. Now the former North Gambier player and 2019 SANFL premiership player with Glenelg has been rubbing shoulders with him on the training track at his new home – Kardinia Park. Close was taken in the AFL Rookie Draft at pick 14 and is now living his AFL dream. Draft night he was just at his Adelaide home on the couch refreshing his phone at regular intervals before the good news appeared – he was set to be a Cat. “I had met with Geelong earlier in the year and they had been working with my manager and I knew they were interested but everything has to align and fortunately there was a spot there,” Close said. “It was still a shock because you never really know what is going to happen.” Right from arriving at the club, where he has spent a fair bit of the past couple of weeks, Brad could sense just how different life in the AFL was going to be compared with his other football experiences. “Just seeing the facilities and how good they are gives you a hint at what is to come,” Brad said. “It has all been pretty full on but when it is something you love it’s pretty easy to just enjoy it.” Brad has always been a keen trainer so the lift in intensity in that area has been of no real concern and he has thrived, already, on watching how the Cats star go about their training regime.

There has been testing and meetings regarding club expectations and already Brad has worked closely with newly installed development coach Shaun Grigg – a former Carlton player and part of Richmond’s 2017 premiership team. “It has been good to work with Shaun – obviously he is so experienced and only just out of the game so there is so much he can teach us,” Brad said. He also believes his time in the SANFL has prepared him well for the rigours of AFL. “Playing against the bigger bodies has been important and having Mark Stone as my coach, who had been in the AFL system, means some of the game plan and expectations are common.” And while it has been crazy meeting some of his football heroes, Brad said the playing group had been really welcoming. “They have made all the new guys feel part of it already,” he said. “And it is great to just look across and see how the top guys are doing it and learn from that.” Up until Christmas Brad is sharing apartments with all the new guys but has plans to move in with one of the players in the New Year. He is also set to continue his accountancy studies. Above & left - Brad Close during his playing days with North Gambier. PHOTOS COURTESY OF FRANK MONGER

MOTOR WORLD SERIES ROADSHOW SET TO HIT TOWN Along with the King’s Challenge, the World Series Sprintcars are the jewel in the crown of every Borderline Speedway season and this year looms as no different. The Glenburnie track will host the December 28 action during Speedweek, with 10 contracted drivers already announced for the series with plenty of other class competitors also set to join the action during Speedweek, including homegrown hero and reigning champion Steve Lines. The other local hope, Glen Sutherland, is one of the 10 contracted drivers announced. One of the roadshow’s most popular drivers, Sutherland takes on the 2019/20 season under the guise of new crew chief Matt Griffiths. Sutherland has already hit the ground running in 2019/20, finishing ninth overall in the hotly contested Chariots of Thunder series in Darwin and he is clearly gunning for an outright Top 10 in World Series Sprintcars – a feat he last achieved in 2017/18. Come December 28, organisers expect around 50 sprintcars to hit the track, with a similar number of Formula 500 drivers set to be part of the support program. Local Steph Munn will b e part of the Formula 500 action, while the

other local connection on the night is long time visitor and WSS icon Brooke Tatnell, who takes the drive in V55, Ray Scott’s car. Tatnell holds the record for the most number of A-Main wins in the 30-plus years of World Series Sprintcars, with 77, and he is a nine time champion of the World Series Sprintcars, most recently in in 2014/15, and he has been on the podium plenty of other times as well in the series’ 32 year history. Having shown promising speed in the six events contested last season, the combination of Tatnell, Ashley Scott and the Scott Motorsport team will be looking to hit the ground running in 2019/20, as Brooke chases a 10th World Series Sprintcar title to

cap off his illustrious career. The other contracted drivers are Lucas Wolfe, Rusty Hickman, James McFadden, Dave Murcott, Kerry Madsen, Jock Goodyer, Lockie McHugh and Jason Pryde. World of Outlaws feature race winner Wolfe will make his debut as a World Series Sprintcars contracted driver in 2019/20, as the Pennsylvania teams up with the Queensland based Ayers Motorsport operation. Hickman was the surprise packet World Series Sprintcars last season. Any doubts about the 19 year old’s inexperience were quickly put aside, thanks to his incredible speed in Time Trials, backed up by race craft equal to many of his more esteemed peers. After an off-season which saw him

contest the 59th Knoxville Nationals, together with a string of other events in the US and Australia, Hickman will be out to improve on his fourth overall from 2018/19 and challenge for what could be his first World Series Sprintcar title. Hot off the back of a highly successful overseas campaign which saw him claim the prestigious Knoxville 360 Nationals, four time World Series Sprintcar champion McFadden Racing will be at the wheel of the famed Monte Motorsport Sprintcar Team W17. A two time Australian sprintcar champion, Murcott has been a consistent performer in the WSS but never claimed a championship and the reigning Victorian sprintcar

champion will be looking to rectify that gap in his impressive resume. Madsen is another of the contracted drivers that has yet to claim a WSS championship. Tasmania Goodyer is only 18 years old but showed enough in last year’s series where he tackled a handful of rounds to show he can mix it with the best. Twenty-one year old McHugh cemented himself as one of sprintcar racing’s rising stars last season, with consistent finishes and a Queensland State Championship aboard his family owned Q23 Sedl Contracting Triple X. This season will see the Gold Coast native tackle a gruelling 50 night schedule, piloting his regular Q23 on the East Coast, before saddling up in the West Australian based J & S Drilling Motorsport Maxim for John McLellan to take on the 17 night World Series Sprintcars schedule. Western Australia’s Pryde will line up for his fifth successive year as a contract driver in 2019/20 season at the wheel of his Austwide Communications W14 machine. Gates open at 4pm and racing starts at 5pm. Above (left) - Steve Lines after claiming last year’s World Series Sprintcar Championship. Above (cente) - Brooke Tatnell returns as a contracted driver, again behind the wheel of Ray Scott’s V55, as he guns for his 10th title. Above (right) - Local hope Glen Surtherland has already shown good form and would be looking to kake his mark as a contracted driver in the 2019/20 World Series Sprintcars Championship.
