COVER - CHRISTMAS IS A TIME OF GIVING AT MOUNT GAMBIER CENTRAL Each year, the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that a range of vulnerable and isolated people in our City are able to experience the joy of Christmas. Last year, the Mount Gambier Mayor’s Community Christmas Appeal assisted 454 families, 670 adults, 467 teenagers and 272 children with Christmas food hampers, vouchers or gifts. Just $50 can help one local family. All donations to the appeal are distributed through the Christmas Cheer Program delivered by the following agencies: • Uniting Care • ac. care • Lifeline SE • St Vincent De Paul • The Salvation Army

Why support the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal: o The appeal relies solely on the support of local donors – the service is additional to the role played by local agencies and is not possible without contributions from local individuals, families, groups and businesses. o Demand for support is increasing and the service is becoming stretched - while contributions from the local community have been reasonably consistent, the demand for support at Christmas has increased by almost 20% over the past five years. o The appeal is a unique local initiative - 100% of the funds are sourced and distributed locally. The City of Mount Gambier supports the Mount Gambier Community Mayor’s Christmas Appeal by acting as a collection point for the agencies. Outside any fees charged by the

financial institutions, 100% of your donation is distributed amongst the participating agencies. Donations can be made through the following channels: 1. Mount Gambier Central are again this year donating $1 from each Santa photo sitting to the Appeal. Santa photos are only $6 for a 6x4 photo and photo mount and a free gift for every child. Santa will arrive at Mount Gambier Central on Saturday, December 14 at 11am and will be at the centre daily between 11am and 2pm until Christmas Eve and 4pm to 7pm on Thursday December 19. Spare Ya Change 4 Kids might be officially launching this Saturday at Metro Bakery & Café but in reality, it was a concept born 30 years ago when one compassionate parent did his bit to ensure kids weren’t going hungry at school. That parent was John Pratt and his quiet work, which son Don only became aware of in more recent years, inspired Don to take that concept and run with it. What started with John dropping off boxes of cereal and tins of milo weekly three decades ago, never telling a soul what he was up to, has brought us to the launch of Spare Ya Change 4 Kids, a program committed to feeding local school children. The program had its infancy back in 2017 when Don hosted a Christmas Party in Melaleuca Reserve, having raised money for gifts for the children, and has continued to develop from there, moving from providing breakfast for students to also providing take home meals, hot or cold. Historically self-funded by Don, who is a trained chef, the finding model moving forward has been providing lockable tubs for hotels and other hospitality outlets in town to get involved, by offering up their recyclable cans and bottles, once a month or whatever frequency they are comfortable with and 3000 meals later the program is looking to hopefully take off and continue to expand. “I have had people drop cans and bottles in my driveway,” Don said, as he experiences firsthand the generosity for which this community is so notorious. Already around half a dozen hotels have joined the crusade, as has the North Gambier Football Club. “Our vision is that is becomes a sustainable program as this community takes care of its own community,” Toni Vorenas, Metro Bakery & Café owner, who has been a huge supporter of the program. A former teacher, the fact it helps students work and learn more successfully and the fact it can also provide an educational opportunity through nutrition advice only make her more enamoured of the compassionate project. The program at Melaleuca Park does see the children pop in for breakfast but also cook up simple meals to pack and take home and principal Lynette

Corletto is also a huge fan of the program. “Our community has benefitted by the support that Melaleuca Park Primary School receives from this program,” she said. “Our school supports a number of vulnerable families living within the community with 80% of our students qualifying for school card due to financial hardship or disadvantage. Through the Spare Ya Change 4 Children meals program we currently distribute 25 meals each week and fresh bread kindly donated by Metro. These meals are provided to students and their families experiencing financial hardship. Through this program we are able to provide lunch for children who otherwise would not have lunch at school. We are also able to assist families by providing nutritional meals to feed their family for the night. Children who are provided regular healthy meals do better at school experiencing improved development and learning.” And it is that kind of endorsement that sees Don and Toni harbouring big plans for setting up a kitchen specifically for the program to allow it to be rolled out across the region, along with the possibilities of high school students working alongside

primary school students in terms of meal preparation. “To have our own kitchen would be amazing, it is capacity building,” Toni said. Even as the program sits right now, Don could be cooking more but the capacity to store restricts his output. “I could double my output easily in a week and it would be great to have a build up of meals in a freezer so we could help whenever needed,” Don said. Which brings us to this Saturday and the launch, which doubles as a major fundraiser, for the Spare Ya Change 4 Kids program. Running from 9am to 5pm at Metro, there will be celebrity wait staff and entertainment. And if you need any more convincing of the merits of the program, just one testimonial from a grateful parent should seal the deal. “They help me when I run out of money to feed my three children. I see what you’re doing here. You saw me in the Blue Lake Fun Run last weekend. To respond to your comments, surely there must be some enjoyment in watching something different as you sip chardonnay on your verandah on a Sunday morning. Yes there were the odd chubbas like yours truly, but I think you need to take a glass half full attitude. There were plenty of very attractive females in their active wear, which for me is essentially the only reason I endure the not-very-fun run in the first place.I resent your description of me waddling or jiggling. I would describe it more as a stagger or a shuffle. To be honest Duncan, I have enough problems from the fun run without you adding to them. Let me take you on a little tour through the history of my involvement in the Blue Lake Fun Run to help you understand something tragic that happened during this year’s run. About six or seven years ago, people at my workplace were talking about their involvement in the fun run. I confidently explained how easy I thought it would be to run the fun run, despite not having run further than my fridge since I was about 15. Of course, when your mouth writes a check like

that, your rear end is going to have to try to cash it in the future. Sure enough, the next year I was reminded of what I’d said and bullied into entering the run. It’s fair to say my first attempt went poorly. I kept promising myself I’d get out and do some training for jumping into the 6.8 km event. It never happened. In the run, my life flashed before my eyes. I couldn’t walk for about a fortnight. I ran for about two thirds of the course. At the end, I swore that I’d have another go the next year, and that I would train. As promised, I did train the next year, which not surprisingly led to a better outcome with my ability to jog the whole way. Over the next couple of years my fitness improved and at my peak I completed the course in about thirty two minutes. Fast forward to this year, I did significant damage to my ankle in May. This had me out of action for a couple of months, and it’s only been the last month or so when I’ve built up to a bit of jogging again. It’s fair to say, that I was not in the best of shape for this year’s run. My son Shaquille, now 10 years old decided he wanted to do the 6.8 kms with me for the first time. Two years ago we did the 3.2kms. On that occasion he predictably charged off while I just paced myself and settled into a relaxed

jog. Every couple of hundred metres he’d have to stop running and walk for a while. I’d catch him and he would charge off again, being determined to beat his father. About half way up the hill his run-walk pacing had used up too much of his energy and I was able to maintain my steady pace and leave him behind. Back to last weekend, and on this occasion Shaquille decided to stick close to my hip in the early stages up Bay Road. It became obvious however that he wanted to run quicker than the pace I was managing. He was trotting along a few metres in front of me, regularly turning back and looking at me, saying things like, “Come on, Dad. Let’s get moving.” I know that I don’t have that much fitness at the moment so was encouraging him to keep going if he wanted, and not to worry about me. The first few times I said this he told me he was going to stay with me, but as we turned to go around the lake, he obviously made the decision that he didn’t want to wait for me anymore. I was fine with this to be honest. In my head I was thinking, “Even with my reduced fitness, 6.8kms is a pretty big ask for a scrawny little ten year old. He’ll run out of fuel at some point and that’s where my more steady, consistent pace will win the day. Keep going Mr Hare. Mr Tortoise will get you in the end.” Nice in theory, but not how it played out in practice. Shaquille trotted off into the distance, and I didn’t see him again until I saw him waving to me as I crossed the finish line. Results indicate he’d been there for about five minutes. He beat me by a mile. Probably literally. There comes a time in every young man’s life when he finally beats his father in something. It’s the moment when the young lion defeats the old lion. I was kind of hoping that my son would have some respect for me for a bit longer than 10 years old. It would have been nice if I could have at least put up a bit of a fight. What’s worse is that I’ve seen a photo and the video of me crossing the finish line. I look like I’m running up hill (which I’m not) and Shaquille described the sound as like if Darth Vader was being choked. At least previously when I’ve been beating him to the finish I’ve had time to compose myself and get emergency medical treatment before he finishes. There was a distinct look of disappointment and shame in his eyes when he saw me crossing the line this year. One of the most disappointing things was that there was a psychic wellbeing fair at the town hall. I probably should have gone in there and got them to have a look at my future. If I had have known Shaq was going to beat me, I could have given the run a miss and headed over to Metro for a hot chocolate and some cake instead. Maybe next time. South African born surgeon Eben Beukes has led a life around the world and rich with experience and those diverse experiences, combined with a lifelong passion for reading and writing, has seen Eben spend his time away from the operating theatre sitting at a keyboard. This Sunday, he will launch his eighth and ninth novels with his 10th already in the works. Hosted at the City Hall, Mount Gambier, the launch of Devil’s Tumble and Winter’s Day, both in the crime thriller genre, starts at 11am with refreshments supplied and a chance to not only hear Eben speak about his work but also enjoy a Q&A with the author. Devil’s Tumble is a sequel to The Master of Louka, with both being fast paced thrillers delving into the world of crime in the Middle East – a region familiar to Eben throughout his career with stints as a surgeon in a Saudi Arabian military hospital and as senior surgeon at the Kuwait City Armed Forces Hospital. Winter’s Day is a twisted tale from the end of the Second World War. Writing has been a hobby for the general surgeon for 25 years now and

looms as his grand retirement plan after he picks up a scalpel for the final time but his love of the written work has been a life ling addiction. “When I was in high school I would read two novels a week,” Eben said. Like most published author, his critique of his early work is harsh. “My first published book was really bad,” he said. “Like anything else, you get better at it the more you do it and if I say so myself, I am pretty good now.” Eben’s process is simple. He gets a clear picture in his mind of his next chapter and when he has some down time at weekends, he hits the keyboard, writing the chapter and finetuning it over the two days. “But you definitely don’t have to write a story from beginning to end,” he said. “If you get an idea write it down. You can jump around the chapters and then bring it all together. It is like a jigsaw puzzle.” All of Eben’s books will be available for sale at the launch, which is being hosted by fellow surgeon Barney McCusker. He has also recently had contact from a United States based book store chain interested in showcasing his novels.

Method Prepare noodles following packet directions. Drain. Combine 1 teaspoon sesame oil and five-spice in a bowl. Add chicken. Stir to coat. Heat vegetable oil in a wok over high heat. Stir-fry chicken, in 2 batches, for 2 minutes or until browned all over. Transfer to a plate. Add ginger and garlic to wok. Stir-fry for 1 minute or until fragrant. Add mushrooms. Stir-fry for 2 minutes or until softened. Add noodles, snow peas, stock and sauces. Stir-fry for 2 minutes or until heated through. Add remaining sesame oil, chicken and bean sprouts. Stir-fry for 1 minute or until chicken is cooked through. Sprinkle with coriander and chilli. Serve with lime.

I have discovered that with the windows up and no companions to restrict my vocals (Mr Two Year Old is not a fan), I am a truly sensational singer. Brilliant, in fact. The notes I hit with a few of those Leo numbers were truly memorable. I have discovered that I can live on a diet of dinosaur jellies, a couple of Cheezels and can of Coke (most consumed within the first 10 minutes of trying to get out of the service station carpark) without feeling violently ill. I have discovered that I can carry on a perfect conversation with myself, complete with hand movements and witty comebacks. So good, that half an hour later I was still laughing at some of my retorts. Hmmm. On reflection, maybe I should start worrying about myself. It may be a case of one too many Leo songs for this little traveller - I don’t think I should drive alone anymore.

the villagers along the coastlines of the Philippines hit four years in a row, with many of the villagers not even having built new homes from the last typhoon when yet another one has hit. Many of the products we sell are from poor, underdeveloped countries and, in particular, the range of driftwood creations we have each year are from pieces of driftwood harvested from the beaches by local villagers in the typhoon hit areas. Each village is allowed to harvest a certain amount of driftwood thrown up from the typhoons and craft them into the wonderful pieces we sell, from Christmas decorations to spheres, planters and decorative wreathes, and a brand new range of birdhouses in several styles - see our newly upgraded website for all of the styles. SPORT HOMEGROWN TALENT RE-SIGNS Emily Winter was arguably the most exciting signing for the Pioneers when it reinvigorated its women’s program for the 2019 Premier League. If you discount Melissa Russell, who morphed from assistant coach to player, Emily was the first homegrown talent to take up the opportunity and the Penola local, who had a strong SA Country background as a junior, was identified as ready to test herself at the next level. And she did not let the powers that be down, a regular fixture in the starting five alongside her more experience teammates – the two US imports, former WNBL player Russell and Maddy Wormald, who had some Premier League experience already before moving to Mount Gambier. “I enjoyed it so much,” Emily said. “As soon as we finished I was ready to sign for the next season wherever we ended up playing.” That has turned out to be NBL1 and that looms as a huge step up in class for the young Pioneer. Many would argue the women’s competition is stronger than the men’s equivalent, with a high number of WNBL player in teams for the NBL1 competition. “It is definitely a little bit scary,” Emily said. “But we don’t start until April and we have plenty of time to prepare and keep working hard to improve.” If season 2019 was anything to go by, Emily looks set to rise to the challenge, given how much her game developed in the past few months once she had the chance to play in a high level competition. “From the start of the season I have come leaps and bounds,” Emily said, “I have definitely improved ten fold and that’s thanks to Matt (Sutton) as well as playing inn a higher competition.” The debutant coach, who took home the coach of the year at the Premier League awards for the women’s competition, has clearly captured the imagination of his players and has proved a huge drawcard for the upcoming 2020 season. “I definitely can’t fault Matt at all – the time and effort he put in,” Emily said. “He was a great coach and can definitely give

him the credit for my improvement.” And Emily is all too aware she will need to continue to work closely with her coach to elevate her game even further. “I have to improve every aspect of my game at the moment, I know I’ve got to get better,” Emily said. But she also knowns it can be done – this year showed her just what she is capable of. “I remember the first five minutes of the first game we played in the Premier League – it was a real eye opener and I thought what have we got ourselves into,” she said. “But we settled down, we improved, we worked hard and got the rewards.” The opportunity to continue to play the sport she loves at a high level while still living at home is a godsend for the 18 year old and while no official training is underway as the club works to get the 2020 playing roster together, Emily has not stopped. “I travel to Mount Gambier once a week to train with Matt and I am at the Penola stadium every other day.”

The SE Women’s 8 Ball League held the 2019 grand finals recently and there were good, close contests in both divisions. In Division 1, German Club Legends who were last year’s Division 2 premiers came up against the 2018 Division 1 runners up German Club Shooters which shows just how much depth the club has when it comes to Women’s 8 Ball. The Shooters came out of the blocks well with each of their players winning a frame within the first six to put them five to one ahead. The second frame of the match saw the two captains face off with current South Australian State repreentative Karla Bowd pitted against former State representative and 2019 most frames winner Chris Schembri, which the former won in what was a good tussle. The Legends then bounced back to win a couple in a row through captain Chris Schembri and Mandy Hart but from then on it was frame for frame which saw Shooters eventually come out on top eight frames to five. A highlight of the night was Karla Bowd’s master

break in her final frame for the season. The Division 2 final was contested by The A Team, who are based at The South Aussie Hotel, and JT Strikers, who play out of Jens Hotel. Strikers started well and were 3-2 up at the completion of the first round but to their credit The A Team dug deep and recovered to have the scoreline all tied up at five apiece by the end of the second. The A Team who were chasing the fairytale ending after their early season plight in regards to being short of players etcetera just weren’t able to get over the line with the Strikers being too good on the night and eventually claiming the honours eight frames to six after winning three of the last four games.
