COVER - JENS HOTEL IS THE PLACE TO PARTY THIS FESTIVE SEASON The best of both worlds – that’s what Mount Gambier’s Jens Hotel offers, with its stunning 19th century facade that pays homage to the early days of Mount Gambier’s oldest hotel, and the majestic central staircase and chandelier, still popular for wedding and formal photos, merged with the facilities demanded of the 21st century pub goer – large flat screen television, playing sport from across the country and, indeed, the world, as well as the latest poker machines, betting facilities and a remodelled outdoor area. Now Jens is adding another dimension to the experience with a newly refurbished function room that will be available from February next year. With views of the Cave Gardens, there is no better venue in the heart of the city for your next special occasion or corporate event, catering for up to 140 people. And as the party season kicks into gear, Jens Hotel is set to be at the epicentre of all those celebrations with a massive Mount Gambier Gold Cup event on December 6 with a marquee

The Sports Bar is also perfectly located adjacent to the dining room, that seats 200, so you can start your evening with some casual drinks before sitting down and enjoying the range of burgers that have fast become a speciality of Jens, as well as the usual delicious pub fare you’ve come to expect from the Jens kitchen. The Sports Bar also flows into a cafe style dining area and as the weather improves, the stunning beer garden that caters for 100 patrons. So pop into Jens today and experience the ultimate in city centre hospitality and entertainment. set up for 500 people to continue the party after the city’s feature horse race has been run and won. There will be entertainment from Suburban Henry, with a souvlaki and wood fired pizzas on the menu. Mark Allen’s Landrover DJ Booth will also be on site. And the action doesn’t stop there with Jens making the most of the stunning marquee set up to host a South Australia versus Victoria boxing challenge the following night at $30 a head. Then, on December 21, Jens is ushering in the Christmas season by hosting top Adelaide based party band Clearway in a huge coup for the hotel. Playing hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s, Clearway is in high demand and to secure a regional performance is a feather in the cap for Jens Hotel.

Jens Hotel continues to go from strength to strength as it has looked to bring the city centre back to life. There is also the JT Sports Bar with its upgraded pressed tin bar; spacious seating area, wall to wall screens, as well as Fox Sports HD throughout the hotel so you don’t need to miss a minute of the action across every imaginable sporting contest.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - RETURN OF THE DENTIST… By ROBBIE TANSEL Well I had my third dental appointment today, to deal with my ongoing tooth erosion issues. The good news is that this was my final appointment so now I can say whatever I want without any fear of Mr Dentist getting revenge by causing pain while in the dental chair. I don’t think he’s that petty and vindictive to be honest, although he is a dentist. Let me start by making a big confession to my dentist. I didn’t brush my teeth before visiting you today. My teeth were totally unbrushed. I bet he noticed anyway and was just too

polite to say anything. It’s probably as obvious as the difference between a clean car and a dirty car. This has to be the ultimate of poor etiquette. You can’t rock up to the dentist with little bits of food still in your mouth. But I did anyway. Sorry. For a special treat today, he decided that he’d have a go at my teeth without any anaesthetic. I’m not saying this was linked to the articles I’ve written over the last couple of weeks about visiting the dentist, but I’m not not saying it was linked. Quite clearly he has been offended by me saying going to the dentist doesn’t hurt and thought he’d test out whether I’m as tough as I’m claiming to be. My response to that was to nearly fall asleep on a couple of occasions.

That’s correct, despite the fact I had a drill churning away in my mouth, plus half of his hand, and some weird tiny mouth vacuum sucking, I nearly nodded off. I was that comfortable and pain free. One of the biggest changes in the dental industry in the last thirty years is they don’t shove all of their implements in your mouth and then start asking you questions. This is really quite a revolutionary development. As most of you will remember, back in the day, the dentist would get his or her mirror, scraper thing, drill, little mirror on a stick and some cotton balls to provide room to move, and their arm up to the elbow, into your mouth. At this point they would then say,“So what are you up to on the weekend?” I believe not talking to the patient with the mouth full of dental accessories is now a fascinating subject students study as part of their dental undergraduate degree. If I was going to nominate the second biggest change, it would be the fact that they don’t give out stickers at the end of the appointment with clever teeth related slogans about how brave I am. Nor toothbrushes for that matter. I don’t think that’s too much to ask, when you’re paying several hundred dollar for the privilege of going to the dentist. Another change at the dentist revolves around the use of gold for patching up teeth. My dad knocked

out half of one of his teeth with a beer bottle, and back in the day they would use gold for fillings. This is apparently because gold fits the tooth more accurately and wears similarly to tooth enamel. And it looks really cool. I’d love to have a gold tooth so that when I smiled it would sparkle in the sun light. Having a gold tooth would be such a stand out feature. But in a

sign that sums up the modern world, dentists use boring white fillings. Sticking your hands in strangers’ mouths must be a pretty unusual job and possibly not that pleasant. Just imagine a job where all you do every day is tell people to say ah, and then once they open their mouth, stick power tools and other implements into their gobs. Mouths don’t strike me as the most pleasant of places. They’re hot and gooey. As if the mouth isn’t a bad enough place to stare into, as a dentist you spend the whole of your time with people looking up their nostrils. It can’t be the best view that they’ve ever seen in their life. Obviously there are so many possible ways that the view could look a bit disgusting, most of them related to boogie. A thorough blow of the nose may be more vital prior to a dental visit, than brushing the tee Being a dentist must be quite a monotonous existence. Spending all day every day, staring into people’s mouths and fossicking around in their gobs surely doesn’t qualify as a good day. I can’t imagine anyone getting home from a day of dentisting and telling their significant other how exciting their day was. Although the hundreds of dollars charged to clients must make things a bit more bearable. If you like going to the dentist, send me an email at robbietansel@gmail.com and we’ll start a club or something.

landmark, the ORIS James Morrison JMA watch pays homage to one of the regional city’s most high profile residents. Jazz great James Morrison AM established the James Morrison Academy of Music (JMA) in Mount Gambier in conjunction with UniSA five years ago, attracting undergraduate students and lecturers from around the globe. The annual winner of the JMA “Excellence in Performance Award receives a watch from the coveted ORIS Jazz Collection honouring international greats including Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. ORIS Switzerland region manager, Michael Meier, said it was James Morrison’s turn to be recognised, and flew to Mount Gambier from Switzerland to hand deliver the first watch to Mr Morrison. “We like our watches to tell a story, and we are thrilled to be able to share the great work of James Morrison and his work with the next generation of jazz greats with the rest of the world; we have been working with James on design options for quite some time, and it’s a really nice dress watch that people will enjoy wearing, he said. James Morrison is a multiinstrumental virtuoso best known for his trumpet playing, and the hands of his namesake watch are crafted from brass. The seconds hand counterbalance is shaped like a trumpet’s finger hook, while the back has been engraved with the Academy’s

trumpet logo. “It’s incredible – ORIS have taken so much care to make something really special, and it’s a great honour to think that these striking blue watches will go all around the world with that logo on

the back talking about the Academy and Mount Gambier, James Morrison said. Just 1234 watches have been manufactured, echoing the standard count in for musicians prior to a performance. James Morrison jazzes it up with “2-3-4 as his signature countin, and was presented with watch number 234. “We were initially only going to make 234 pieces, but once I shared the concept with my colleagues in Switzerland they all wanted one, so we quickly realised that it couldn’t just be an Australian edition and added an extra thousand to the release, ORIS’s Michael Meier said.. Student William Pethick, (pictured above with James MOrrison and thier matching sepcial edition watches) from Perth, also received one of the first limited edition watches after winning the 2019 JMA “Excellence in Performance award prior to the JMA End of Year Concert at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre earlier this month.

WHITE RIBBON TRADITION CONTINUES

Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group fired up the barbecue again at Frew Park last Friday for the annual White Ribbon Breakfast. Held annually since 2011, the free community breakfast recognises the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. All community members were invited to come along to enjoy free eggs, supplied by Splendid Eggs bacon, sausages, and juice, with free barista coffee kindly supplied by Metro Bakery & Café. This event was also generously sponsored by Soroptimist International, Mount Gambier and the Sunset Kitchen. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, November 25, also marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The 16 Days of Activism end on 10 December (International Human Rights Day) and tackles the global prevalence of men’s violence against

women and girls. While the charity White Ribbon Australia recently closed its doors the White Ribbon Campaign continues. “One in three Australian women has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime,” chairperson Sonya Mezinec said, “Communities play an important role in creating positive change so come along, enjoy a freshly cooked hot breakfast, and support our goal to work towards the prevention of violence against women in your community.” If you know a woman experiencing violence, speak up. Ask her if you can help. The Limestone Coast Domestic Violence Service will support women in the Limestone Coast. They can be contacted on (08)87231385 or free call 1800 631 385. SCHOLARSHIP ON OFFER Mount Gambier & District students will again benefit from a scholarship program, which will supplement their study costs in their first year of higher education. Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Branch chair Helen Strickland said the Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Branch Scholarship Program, which opens next month, was launched because the branch believed local students deserved every opportunity to achieve their dreams. “An investment in education yields great long-term dividends and by helping young people gain access to tertiary education, the returns to the student, their families and the local community are significant,” Mrs Strickland said. “The Community Bank Branch Scholarship Program is a transformative undertaking that changes the lives of local students, strengthens communities for the long term and is a tangible example of the good that banking with us can achieve. Our young people are our future and we believe they deserve the best support possible to help forge their careers and achieve their dreams.” Successful Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Scholarship applicants will initially receive funding for one year and depending on academic performance, the scholarship may be renewed to assist in the second year of their study. Applications are invited from eligible students, starting their studies next

year, from December 2. Applications close on January 28 and will be assessed in early February. Last year, the Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Branch Scholarship supported local student Lucy Lockwood with her Bachelor of Dental Surgery studies at the University of Adelaide. Lucy said the scholarship gave her the necessary funds to live and study in Adelaide, relieving the financial pressure of attending university. “I am grateful to Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Branch for helping me to attend university and to pursue my ambitions.” Lucy said. The Mt Gambier & District Community Bank Scholarship is part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship Program, which partners with Community Bank branches, Rural Bank and The University of Melbourne. The program has now supported ore than 800 students, with $8.1 million in funding since its inception in 2007. IN THE GARDEN After many years providing the region with unusual garden pots and giftware and continually growing and expanding into new areas, Gardenarium has seized the opportunity with the recent closures of many gift shops in Mount Gambier to introduce a wider range and has launched its newest foray, expanding its range of Christmas gift ideas from those associated with and around the gardening scene to covering all aspects of Christmas gift ideas for all members of the family. The opening of the Old Potting Shed giftshop within the nursery some years ago has brought about a light airy nook in which you will find an array of unusual gift ideas. After significant travels, we have sourced unique and unusual gift ideas, focussing again on small batches of unusual offerings as well as continuing our search from under developed countries and offering their inhabitants the opportunity to improve their living conditions. (See some of what’s on offer on the facing page) but you really do need to call in with our pre-Chrismas sale in full swing with up to 70% off and around only five weeks to go, time is getting away. Live Christmas tree pre-orders are very strong again this year and we are nearly sold out of some varieties in certain sizes. Wollemi Pines are well and truly back as a Christmas tree or indeed gift for that hard to buy for someone who loves a living fossil (and no I don’t mean Dame Edna). Orders for all our Christmas type trees are rolling

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant in well from the multitude of Poms, Brits, Americans, Europeans, Canadians, South Africans and many more who love their traditional, real Christmas trees. Ordering NOW, for pick up closer to Christmas, is advised, as we always seem to sell out quickly with only a limited number we can grow. Here at Gardenarium and The Pot Shop we are bursting at the seams with Christmas gift ideas and with less than five weeks to go you should be well underway with Christmas shopping. We have the whole family covered for Christmas this year, not just for gardeners, from wall plaques and wall art for both indoor and out, Burgon & Ball quality British gardening tools, topiary frames, their indispensable watering can of all watering cans and and children’s tools, right through to fruit trees, berries and ornamental trees, and then on to quality outdoor furniture settings, bar chairs and tables and, as ever, a whole new range of outdoor garden benches, fountains and birdbaths. Last season we became the stockists for the Limestone Coast region for Kensington high quality teak outdoor furniture, expanding the teak and outdoor wicker range and adding a conservatory range (see website) adding solid teak dining chairs, bar tables and stools. They have a warranty second to none. This year we have added two styles of solid teak benches after listening to your requests for a good solid, traditional garden bench,

hurry in as at 25% off they have been selling well. To add to our popular cast aluminium range we have three new benches for dining tables, at the back door to put your boots on or for out in the garden for a spot to unwind. being aluminium they are non-corrosive so ideal for coastal areas too where the salty air rusts normal steel in no time. The pre-Christmas sale has been continued, so the good news is if you missed out on any of the hundreds of specials throughout the entire Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Group specials then there is still time. Much of our stock are one-offs found on our buying trips, and specialist, small amounts of products are only available. This year we have introduced a whole new range of indoor pots to pop your favourite indoor plant in, including a very tasteful Ming inspired range (see facing page) and the largest range of

Terrariums I have ever seen. Add to this a new range of umbrellas and of course the ever popular Sloggers Clogs, gumboots and elastic sided boots, all $10 off. To keep our ranges unique, current and exclusive we aim to offer you, exclusive products, many from poor and underdeveloped countries, which we try to support as much as possible. With driftwood birdhouses from the Philippines, to wrought iron and cast iron ware from within Australia, a new range of birdhouses and feeders for native birds in our GumNut Collection (see website for details) and statues from Indonesia, the range is overwhelming. Stock is handpicked from small batches and we will never have them again - a great gift idea for that someone special, safe in the knowledge that no one else will have them.

NEW GROUP OF RESIDENTS PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE Twenty-seven Mount Gambier residents were recently conferred as Australian citizens at a Citizenship Ceremony hosted by City of Mount Gambier at City Hall. Originating from the United Kingdom, China, Ireland, Philippines, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Mexico, Pakistan and Hong Kong candidates pledged their loyalty and commitment to Australia in the presence of family and friends. The ceremony was officiated by Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM and was attended by councillors, Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell and Member for Barker Tony Pasin, who read a welcome message on behalf of Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman. Year 3 and 4 students from McDonald Park Primary School performed the Australian National Anthem. Originally from England, Keith Bateman expressed his gratitude for being officially recognised as a citizen having lived in Australia for more than 60 years. “I feel greatly honoured but humbled to be one of many to have gained citizenship, each individual has their own journey and stories of how we got to be here but we’re all here from diverse origins sharing in the ceremony together,” Keith said. “My family immigrated to Australia in the 1950s because my parents decided to give themselves and their children a better standard of life than what post-

war England could offer them. I have more than fulfilled their dreams of a fortunate life and for that I am so proud of them for having the desire and vision to come to Australia.” Retired teacher Susanna Van Der Veen moved to Mount Gambier in 2013 and now enjoys life in Mount Gambier. “What I like most about living here is being so close to my daughter and living in a clean and safe city with friendly people, I also enjoy the beauty of Mount Gambier,” Ms Van Der Veen said. “The ceremony was very moving and now means that I have a country to be part of and proud of.” Former UK citizen Richard Crook moved to Mount Gambier in December last yeare and enjoys the activities

available in the city and the kindness of the community. “Becoming an Australian citizen is important to me to show I have commitment in the country and a real sense of belonging,” Mr Crook said. “With the consent of my grown up children I gave up my life in the UK to follow the dream of living in Australia. After living in Western Australia for two years I drove along the Nullabor and travelled to Tasmania before arriving in Mount Gambier in 2018 where my friends helped me set up home.” Muhammad Rizwan, of Pakistan, was one of the younger members of the group to receive citizenship and celebrated his fifth birthday at the ceremony with his parents and sister, who were also awarded citizenship on the night. The next City of Mount Gambier Citizenship Ceremony is set to take place on Australia Day next year. Above - Mount Gambir Mayor Lynette Martin cuts the cake with five year old Muhammad Rizwan, of Pakistan, who celebrated his birthday and becoming a citizen on the same day. Puzzled about the Aged Care Systems? Help is here. Older South Australians living in the South East who are finding it difficult to navigate the aged care systems, including My Aged Care, now have access to a support system as part of the Aged Care Navigators Trial project. As part of this service in the South East, COTA SA is providing a free Community Session to share information on understanding and accessing My Aged Care, learning about the services available to support you at home and meet organisations providing the care locally. You will also hear about ongoing Aged Care Support that will soon be available for a couple of hours weekly in Mount Gambier Library hosted by local COTA SA volunteers, Kathy, Andrew and Sharon. It has become very clear that the current aged care system is

STRONG END TO WOMEN’S SOCCER SEASON

COSTLY BRAIN FADE American Football players (NFL) are among the highest paid and also supposedly the most professional and disciplined sports people in the world which makes the melee the other week in the Cleveland Browns v Pittsburgh Steelers game so very hard to believe. With only eight seconds left on the clock and the result of the game already decided a brawl erupted which has seen the main instigator, Myles Garrett, suspended indefinitely and other participants also suspended and heavily fined. Garrett, a former number one draft pick and arguably Cleveland’s best player, missing for the rest of the season almost certainly as put an end to any play-off aspirations Cleveland may have had.

TOP CAT COMMITS Good news for Geelong with star midfielder Mitch Duncan signing a long term extension tying him to the club until the end of 2024. Duncan would have been one of the highest profile players coming out of contract at the end of 2020 and at 28 years of age would have been a target of many rival clubs

Players from the South East Women’s Football Association (SEWFA) have been in action recently, both nternationally and on the State stage. Eight players from the SEWFA league were selected to represent Football South Australia (FSA) in the Singa Cup 2019 in Singapore earlier this month. The Singa Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament held in Asia and consists of teams from all over Asia and Australia. Four players from the league were selected for the Under 16 team, Ellie and Kate Seaton, from Gambier Centrals Soccer Club, Chelsea Frost, from United Women’s Soccer Club and Ella Doody, from International Soccer Club. Chelsea was selected as captain and Ellie as vice captain. “Participating in the Singapore trip was an amazing experience,” Ellie said. “The level of competition was high and the bonding between our team created long term friendships.”The Under 16s played well but came up against some strong opposition losing to Singapore and Darwin, drawing with New South Wales and defeating Indonesia. The players selected for the Under 14 team were Leah McDonnell, from United Women’s Soccer Club, Olivia Gwilym, from Apollo City Football Club, and Lana Shepherd and Emma

Lang, from Millicent Soccer Club. The Under 14 team openend with a loss and then went through the rest of their tournament undefeated with two wins and a draw. The girls came away with second place and silver medals for their efforts and were the highest finishing South Australia team. Two teams from the SEWFA league were also on show in the inaugural Regional Metro Tournament at the Valo Football Centre in Adelaide on November 16. At the end of each season, players are selected by the coaches of all teams in the Senior and Under 16 SEWFA leagues for the honour of being considered the best players from all participating soccer clubs throughout the year. The selected players are put forward as the Team of the Year for their respective age groups. This year’s selected Teams of the Year participated in the first ever Regional Metro Tournament. The Under 16 team played Adelaide Jaguars and the senior side played Modbury Jets. The Under 16 team led 2-0 at half time eventually going down 3-2. The senior team found the back of the net three times in the opening half of thier game and while the MOdbury line-up did score in the second half, SEWFA held on to win the title, 3-1. Player of the game award went to Noelle Brown,

of Apollo City Football Club. Anyone interested in getting involved for the 2020 season can head to the associatiohn’s website for contact details or visit the facebook page. WESTERN WAVES DEBUT FOR KADEN Casterton’s Kaden Humphries has added another accolade to his impressive cricket resume with selection in the Western Waves Under 18 representative team competing in the Youth Premier League. The bowling allrounder has not represented he region before and is looking forward to taking this chance to play at a higher level. “I was selected in initial squad last year but never actually made the final side so this is pretty cool and I’m looking forward to the opportunity,” Kaden said. Kaden has played in Country Week at Under 15 and 17 level, when he represented the Hamilton District Junior Cricket Association, and has a swag of individual accolades but his career highlight so far is the 2016 Under 16 premiership with Grampians. Kaden has been playing cricket for as long as he can remember. “I’ve been playing cricket since I could walk really, not much chance in our household not to end up playing cricket,” he said. But is safe to say Kaden loves it and is looking to play at the highest level possible. “I love playing

A Grade in the Hamilton District Cricket Association and also enjoy getting the chance to represent the association at Country Week,” he said. “Youth Premier League is going to be another level again. Hopefully I can help contribute to the team having some success.” And while Kaden works on his own game, working with the bowling machine on Tuesday night and training with the A Grade team on Thursday nights, he also coaches an Under 12 team on Wednesdays, which also involves umpiring, and helps with Friday night training for a Casterton junior team. Basically he is doing something cricket related when never he can. “What isn’t there to love about cricket?,” Kaden said. “The mateship is great. I’ve played in a few different junior teams as Casterton previously didn’t have a junior side so I’ve met some great people along the way, both coaches and teammates.” Kaden also plays basketball and football but given a choice it is fishing and golf that he loves to do when he isn’t on a cricket field or in the nets.

GO KARTS REV INTO ACTION THIS WEEKEND SIMMONS BREAKS DROUGHT (AND INTERNET) Never has one shot caused such a stir when you consider it was a regulation shot in the first quarter of a regular season NBA clash. The internet almost broke when Aussie NBA star Ben Simmons hit his first ever three pointer in the pre-season and when he hit a three early in the first quarter of Philadelphia’s home game victory over the New York Knicks last Thursday the reaction was comparable. Simmons drifted to the corner, received a pass from teammate Furkan Korkmaz — and didn’t hesitate. Imagine the reaction if he ever hits a clutch, buzzer beating shot from beyond the arc!

Kartsport SA will host a race meeting at the picturesque Mount Gambier Karting Club this weekend. There will be plenty of action over the weekend which will consist of practice, 4 x 8 Lap Races and a 10 Lap Race. Located opposite Borderline Speedway this will make a great family day out with

free entry and you can come and have a chat with the drivers. This will be the first Kartsport SA meeting outside of the Barossa and their very first two day race meeting. This race meeting is a bit more old school karting to what we generally run with Karting Australia where classes don’t have to run rear plastic bumpers and transponders for timing. The other thing that you can do is just get a one of entry/drivers licence to compete. All of the classes other than the senior open class run on a harder controlled Maxxis tyre to keep the costs down which also has a lower performance drop off rate after a lot race meetings. Kartsport SA race meetings have an accumulation of points over the races and not just final only counts which means that drivers need to finish all of their races to try and be on the podium. The senior open class is a true open class which means numerous combinations of tyres and engines can be run. All tyres readily available from

MG, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Vega and Maxxis range can be used with any combination of 100cc, 125cc, twins and 4 stroke engines. The open class allows you the flexibility to get out on track with whatever engine you may have with whatever tyres you can get your hands on. WEEKEND DETAILS: Saturday, November 30 Practice 10am -1.30pm. 2pm onwards – Race 1 for all classes (8 laps). BBQ Saturday night. Sunday, December 1 8.30am onwards – Races 2/3/4 (8 laps)/Race 5 (10 laps) Left- The Mount Gambier Karting Club revs into action this weekend. The club also won an award for its entry in the 2019 Mount Gambier Christmas Parade (pictured).

KIDMAN KEEPS SECURING FASTEST TIME Race six of the Mount Gambier Cylcing Club’s Spring Series, 40km Banks Thargo, kindly supported by John and Heather Kidman, was held on Maaoupe Rd, Coonawarra which tested all riders on a relatively flat but open course that seemed to offer no wind advantage in either direction. The race field consisted of 17 riders, including local Mount Gambier and visiting Hamilton Club members. The handicapped groups all finished within minutes of each other with Danny Hunt (Hamilton) holding on to win with Scott Noonan, second, and Spek Peake, third. Scratch group with Nicholas Kidman and Chris Kennett (pictured left) worked together to catch the field with Kidman once again recording the fastest time on familiar training territory. A post race celebration of a BBQ lunch was provided by the hospitality of the Kidman family who are well respected supporters of the Mount Gambier Cycling Club. INSPIRATIONAL MULLAN It was a tight contest all day inspired by the appearance of super coach Leanne Mullan for Warriors Blue. Wanderers pitcher Teresa Hatch held the usually strong Blue batting line up to only seven safe hits for the day. Warriors skipped out to an early lead when a double from Simone Macdonald scored two runs, with Wanderers answering with one of their own. It became a pitching duel after that bright start however, with both Hatch and Warriors champion Leyna Bruggemann both holding the bats at bay and make scoring difficult. Warriors added on in the fourth innings after an error saw Emma MacDonald bunt her way to third to be scored by a Raquel Sneath safe hit to centre field. Wanderers pegged the run back however, with some good outfield hitting. Fiona Finch was a stand out, and scorched a triple in to right field and was scored, in addition to the five plays she made in the field. Warriors were able to prevail however, thanks to two hits to Daena Wombwell, once of which saw her score off a Kelly double to grab the lead. Nicole Vause and Simone MacDonald were solid as rocks in the field for Blue, as was Emma MacDonald who covered a lot of ground at centre field and took two important catches. Highlights for Wanderers were a cracking hit to Lily Clifford-Finch and a great catch to fellow youngster Mallory Whiting. FEDERAL & SOUTH TAKE THE POINTS THIS WEEKEND In another close game on Friday night, Federal picked up the win against Tigers. In the bottom of the third inning, number nine batter Roy Hutchesson hit safely to centre field followed closely by Darcy Pink’s single to left field. Hutchesson scored on Wade Chant’s deep flyball to righ -field which was grassed and Pink scored on Nathan Taylor sacrifice fly to centre field. Chant crossed home plate on a wild throw created from Tom Rundle’s hit to shortstop. Tigers hit back in the top of the fourth. Ben Marcus hit safely to centre field and Karl Ransom hit into an error at third base. Marcus was batted in by Jacob English’s safehit and Ransom soon followed on Joe Sims’ fielder’s choice. The Demons upped the ante in the bottom of the fifth when they added two more runs to the score. Alex Reppin onboard from an error at shortstop and Chant hit safely. Both of these runners scored on Clay Carpenter’s hit that was chased down by Tigers shortstop. Federal sealed the game in the seventh when Taylor singled to left field and scored on Carpenter’s hit into an error at second base. Tigers had no answers in the batting box leaving Federal victors six runs, all unearned, to Tigers two. Federal had seven safehits two base on ball, 11 strike outs, four RBI, left 10 runners on base and made four errors. Tigers had eight safehits, two base on ball, six strikeouts, two RBI, left 11 runners on base and also made four errors. South Indians hit their way to a win over Central in the second of the Division 1 games. In the top of the order in the opening inning, Hayden Battye for South walked as did Dean Hamilton. Battye scored after an error at left field from a safehit by Travis Lockwood and Hamilton crossed the plate on Damien O’Dine’s hit into an error at third-base. In the even inning, Central lead-off batter Kyall McClean sat at first after a fly ball at right field hit the deck. Dylan Chuck’s sacrifice bunt allowed McClean to score. In the top of the second, Tarquin Morale singled to left field as did Jesse Balshaw and they were both batted in by Ryan Placucci’s two-bagger to the left side of the diamond. Placucci crossed home on Hamilton’s hit into an error at shortstop. South added two more in the next inning when Alex Lewis, after hitting safely, scored on a wild throw from the catcher. Tarquin Morale hit safely for the second time and crossed homeplate on Balshaw’s hit to rightfield. Central could only add one more to their score. McClean’s triple to left field saw him on third base and he was batted in by Nathan Meinck’s sacrifice flyball to centre field. No more runs were scored in the game leaving South victors seven runs to two. South had 11 safe-hits, four walks, nine strikeouts, five RBI, left nine runners on base and made two errors. Central had seven safehits, 0 walks, 2two strikeouts, two RBI, left six runners on base and made six errors. SEE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR RESULTS FROM ALL GRADES

Thousands of people lined Commercial Street on November 16 for the NF McDonnell & Sons Mount Gambier Christmas Parade. The event celebrated its 60th milestone with a bumper number of entries, including the involvement of 17 local schools. City of Mount Gambier community events team leader Denise Richardson was so grateful to all those who came to watch and those who took part. “What a colourful, fantastic Christmas Parade - a huge thank you to all those who participated to make the 60 year anniversary so special,” she said. “The crowd was bigger than ever and the smiling faces and enthusiasm of the children was such a delight to see.” Compton’s Christmas Message by Compton Primary School was named most outstanding entry, taking out the top prize of $750. The entry focused on the importance of spending time with family and friends and spreading Christmas cheer. “The float featured a display of large photos showcasing the history of the parade and the judges were impressed by the colourful display of Christmas costumes and presents, as well as the singing,” Ms Richardson said.
