COVER - PLENTY TO CELEBRATE AT ELITE SUPPLEMENTS Elite Supplements has been providing Australians with an extensive range of supplements and the best customer service since 2008. They are next level in terms of what they provide our customers. They invest into your health, fitness and well being. Elite Supplements is the holy grail of sports supplements. Stocking the biggest and baddest range, including the most popular international and Australian brands - they cater to every lifestyle, goal and health need no matter of your fitness level or profession. Jason Steen & Jessica Von Stanke realised there was a gap in the market and opened an Elite Supplements outlet in Mount Gambier 12 months ago. The store has thrived since opening its doors and celebrated its official one year anniversary on November 17 and will be celebrating

even more in February with a one year anniversary sale. Jason and Jess had always led quite an active lifestyle but after joining up to F45 in 2017 they rediscovered a new love for health and fitness and they got back into their training and supplement routines. Their results had people at the gym asking for their advice and what supplements they used, and how they would use it and that is how starting their own business came about. “People were looking for advice and information so it just made sense,” Jessica said. The well-stocked family run and owned store offers health and sports supplements, protein powders, preworkout options, fat burners, stress busters, sleep enhancers, vegan options, electrolytes, carbs, drink bottles and shakers, as well as advice from staff, who can talk you through all

your supplement needs. “People really do see incredible results.,” Jessica said. “For help with recovery, losing weight, improving quality of sleep and helping your body perform at its best, no matter what form of exercise you are involved in.” It might have only been 12 months since first opening their doors but there have already been a number of changes, both personally and professionally for the couple. They have welcomed daughter Halle and are in the throes of finalising their wedding plans with the couple tying the know next month. In the early days the store had a strong working relationship with F45 Training Mount Gambier and that has expanded to include other gyms, including 24Fit, Iron Will and Ragarnok Power Gym, with discount deals for members. Their commitment, when first opening, was to be active in the community and they have sponsored individual players, as well as this year’s inaugural South Australian boxing event at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. Their success has also seen them put on two more staff members – sports fitness model and competitor Jenna Bushby and teacher and F45 trainer Matt O’Mahoney. Adding Jenna and Matt has only strengthened the knowledge and experience Elite

Supplements boast in terms of health and fitness and finding the right products to suit your needs. They have significantly expanded their range, consistently responding to the needs of customers and the wider community and they can also order stock not already on their shelves. Elite Supplements Mount Gambier has also moved into the activewear space, with the Elite Wear range of workout clothing in store and available to order. Elite Wear includes basketball singlets, men’s muscle tee, women’s tights, a unisex hoodie, women’s sports bra, women’s crop tee, men’s tracksuit pants and a drawstring bag. Elite Supplements Mount Gambier is looking to encourage athletes across all sports to investigate the world of

supplements and how it can help their personal performance. “We have already had heaps of support from the community and we are looking forward to helping even more people,” Jason said. “We know the values of great customer service and would love the opportunity to have you as a customer. Our goal is to improve health and better the lifestyle of the community.”

VITICULTURIST SNARES NATIONAL HONOUR The Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council Inc. (LCGWC) is thrilled to announce that Dr Kerry DeGaris was earlier this month named the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) Viticulturist of the Year. The prestigious award sponsored by Wine Australia honours an outstanding viticulturist who demonstrates a broad positive contribution to the Australian wine industry, and acknowledges adoption of innovative practices, technologies or standards. The chair of the ASVO Awards selection committee Liz Riley described Dr DeGaris as an exceptional communicator.

“It’s that willingness to collaborate and work with industry beyond your region and that generosity with knowledge; there are people who do it really well and Kerry is certainly one of them,” she said. Dr DeGaris is a technical viticulturist for Treasury Wine Estates based in Coonawarra, and is also the chair of the Technical sub-committee of the LCGWC. LCGWC executive officer, Ulrich GreySmith, said she has been instrumental in facilitating and conducting research and extension in the Limestone Coast. “Kerry has really made a difference in terms of research inroads in this region, and has fostered some really strong and

productive relationships between local growers, PhD students and other upand-coming researchers,” he said. Projects steered by Dr DeGaris have enabled growers to better understand and manage a range of challenges including Eutypa, iron bacteria in irrigation water, salinity and cabernet berry shrivel. Her work has also included winemaking trials from local rootstock trials, while her passion for locally-targeted research has seen the development of numerous fact sheets, webinars and workshops which are now being utilised at a national level. ASVO Award recipients are nominated by ASVO-appointed selection

committees comprised of individuals who themselves are distinguished in the fields of viticulture and oenology. Dr Catherine Kidman, viticulturist for Wynns Coonawarra Estate, was also among the finalists, along with Brett McClen, chief viticulturist for Brown Family Wine Group. “It was an extremely tight, high-calibre field and certainly the toughest year in which I have had to judge, which really reflects the depth of the industry at the moment, and all three viticulturist finalists were extremely worthy contenders,” said Liz Riley. McLaren Vale winemaker Corrina Wright was named 2019 ASVO Winemaker of the year, taking the title

winning, and I really wasn’t expecting to go as far as I did,” Jordan said. “The trip to Canberra was amazing and it was awesome to see so many other teams with their ideas of how open data could be used. The atmosphere at the Red Carpet Awards was that of creativity and entrepreneurship and I’ve never seen so many people excited about using open data to create a more sustainable and enjoyable future.” Mount Gambier had further success at the Red Carpet Awards with team ‘Elly and Lilli’ receiving an honourable mention in the youth prize category for their project ‘Once upon a crime’. Mount Gambier Library youth services coordinator and local GovHack

host Terasa Nearmy was pleased to learn of the success of the participants.

from 2018 winner Pete Bissell, Balnaves of Coonawarra chief winemaker and outgoing chair of the LCGWC.

JORDAN TOPS THE NATION The inaugural partnership between the Mount Gambier Library and eNVIsion Limestone Coast for the GovHack Open Data Competition has come to a successful finish with 17 year old Jordan Hutchins taking out four awards. The Mount Gambier competitor won the local, State, national and international Spirit of GovHack awards in a first for the region at the National Red Carpet Awards held in Canberra on Saturday, November 9. eNVIsion Limestone Coast area manager Callena Rawlings was thrilled to hear about Jordan’s success. “Jordan is a very deserving winner who demonstrated leadership,

a collegiate approach and an entrepreneurial mindset,” Ms Rawlings said. “Across the weekend Jordan was a fantastic ambassador for Mount Gambier High School and is an example of the quality students that the school is producing. We are looking forward to partnering with the Mount Gambier Library again for next year’s event in the hope that we can have more regional competitors achieve similar success.” Jordan’s prizes from the Red Carpet Awards included a monetary prize, a certificate of recognition, a medallion and a trophy. “GovHack has such a warm and inviting environment so the experience of the competition is just as good as

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - ME AND MY BIG MOUTH… By ROBBIE TANSEL I wrote an article recently after a trip to the dentist. In it, I commented on the fact that there’s no incentive

to care about your teeth or your health in general in our modern world. A hundred years ago a trip to

Take a chance to WIN with Insurance!

the dentist involved significant pain in solving your dental issues, unless you visited one of those dentists that were using cocaine as an anaesthetic. The premise of my article was that a visit to the dentist is so enjoyable, why would you worry about caring about your teeth? A smarter man might have considered the fact that he had booked a follow up dentist appointment to continue solving his extensive issues with teeth erosion. That’s right. I don’t have decay; I have erosion. For those of you who don’t believe in global warming and climate change, it’s spread to my mouth. (Just to be clear, my teeth erosion is nothing to do with climate change, unless I’m drinking more acidic soft

drinks because the temperature is rising.) Sure enough, when I walked in, my dentist immediately greeted me with, “I read your article about visiting the dentist.” I may be imagining but I believe the statement was followed by a sinister laugh. Like a villain in a movie. My first concern was, “What did I actually say? Was it offensive? Did I make rude comments about his mother? (I’m sure he’s got a lovely mother…although she did give birth to a dentist. If he’s got a sister who’s a lawyer, we may need to ask some questions.) I couldn’t remember what I’d written, which is really quite common for me. You see, my creative process

goes like this. Come up with a weak premise. Make a whole heap of ridiculous statements, with poorly justified reasoning with no intention other than to entertain myself, and then fire it off to the fabulous Di Gould at Lifestyle1.Having entertained myself, I completely wipe the article content from my mind and get on with my life. It’s gone. So even with a quick search of my memory I had no idea what I’d actually said about my dentist. This left me with an uneasy feeling. I knew I’d said that his dental work left me with no pain but is that an insult for a dentist? Do dentists find enjoyment from inflicting pain on their patients so my comment made him feel like he was not doing his job well? Would he take it as a challenge and see if he could get me to flinch a few times? I’d also indicated in my article that when he spoke to me about cutting back on my soft drink intake, I’d nodded along with no intention of changing my behaviour. Would he take this as a slap in the face? He’s a well educated man and I’m ignoring his excellent advice. Would he teach me a lesson by accidentally putting not quite enough anaesthetic into my gum? It’s fair to say I started the appointment feeling a little apprehensive. Needless to say, he was nothing but professional. He did an outstanding job. His chairside manner was peerless. He is quite simply an artist with a drill and a little pointy tooth scratcher thing. He is thoughtful and ensures that you as a patient are not experiencing any discomfort as you work. He is extremely efficient in his work tipping the chair back and forth. He has nice hair. I’m sure he’s a very generous and giving lover. Too far? Let me just say, I actually nearly fell asleep during the procedure. That’s how comfortable I was feeling. And hopefully that’s enough sucking up to make sure he looks after me at my upcoming appointment this week. Having said how wonderful I think my dentist is, can I just make it clear that I have major concerns with dental hygienists. They have terrible big mouths and can’t keep secrets. They are quite simply trouble makers. If you think organic toothbrushes are a good idea, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

BEST TOURISM DINING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA RIGHT ON OUR DOORSTEP

One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! We’ve been quarantined. We The time has come. Mr Two Year Old has officially become “the scapegoat”. Big title for a little man – but Mr Five Year Old is thriving on it. It seems that despite his being barely able to talk, possessing a distinct lack of co-ordination and an inability to reach high objects, Mr Two Year Old is making whoopee and getting up to a whole pile of mischief.

Mayura Station’s on-farm restaurant The Tasting Room has once again won gold at the South Australian Tourism Awards, held in Adelaide earlier this month. Competing against the best tourism restaurants and catering services in the state, the award recognises the boutique steak restaurant’s significant contribution to tourism in South Australia. It’s been a successful fortnight for The Tasting Room, who also received a bronze medal in the Tourism Restaurant category at the recent national Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence. “We are very proud to have received these recent tourism awards,” said Mayura Station managing director Scott de Bruin. “They reflect Mayura’s commitment to delivering an exceptional

destination dining experience, showcasing our award-winning wagyu in an award-winning setting.” Beginning as an educational facility in 2010, The Tasting Room at Mayura Station has evolved into a renowned restaurant offering a unique dining experience, providing guests with an exclusive opportunity to enjoy 100% Fullblood Mayura Station Wagyu Beef on the property where the cattle are born and raised. It is the ultimate in paddock-toplate dining. A meal at The Tasting Room features exceptional Mayura Wagyu accompanied by fresh local produce and matched with some of the best wines the region has to offer. Guests interested in an interactive experience can dine at the Chef’s Table, which delivers all the excitement and heat of the kitchen. The Tasting Room at Mayura Station

And even last night, Mr Two Year Old wasn’t even in the room and yet he managed to tip all the contents from the toy chest onto the floor. Clever Mr Two Year Old. Who does Mr Five Year Old think he’s kidding? There may be a few things that slip past to the wickets when I’m batting, but Mr Five Year Old’s not getting this one past me. I just can’t wait til Mr Two Year Old gets a bit older, then the eldest is going to be in a whole heap of trouble (and left floundering for excuses).

All the while Mr Five Year sits angelically by unable to stop those ferocious whirlwind attacks (apparently). The other day, Mr Two Year Old made Mr Five Year Old kick him and throw toys at him. Bad Mr Two Year Old. Last week, Mr Two Year Old somehow managed to use a steady hand and put eye shadow on himself, Woody and even hold down a reluctant and fighting (?) Just yesterday, Mr Two Year Old climbed to one of the top shelves, pulled down his crayons and drew on his toys. Evil Mr Two Year Old.

PUTTING THE FUN INTO FUNDRAISING Karen Petersen lost her sister Diane Burley to cancer in 2000 and she has been committed to raising awareness and funds ever since. She started her campaign as part of the, now defunct, annual Cancer Council Country Door Knock, when coordinator George Slattery seconded her as a volunteer. She joined the local Cancer Council committee and when the door knock was terminated, Karen started what has become an annual tradition – her Girls Night In. In November 2016, Karen hosted her 10th Girls Night In, topping the $10,000 fundraising mark along the way after the 10th year saw $2200 raised on the day – her highest tally to date. At the weekend, the girls got together for the 13th instalment of the event. “Everyone brings something they don’t want any more, it could be a race hat or a dress or a handbag, basically something girlie,” she said. “We auction everything off over the afternoon and it gets quite competitive. Some of the items have even been auctioned more than once and sometimes the original owner buys them back. It’s a lot of fun and people put aside things during the year in anticipation of bringing it to the

Girls Night In.” There is also a raffle and the generosity of her guests and the community at large always ensures it is a successful event. “Cancer is like a chain and we’ve all been touched by it,” she said. “We’ve all played sport with that person who got it, or worked with someone or a family member. People we meet in life are taken and it’s just not fair.” This year, the loss of friend Kristyn Dawe the previous week was still raw for the group after their brave friend lost her battle with the insidious disease after numerous battles over more than a decade. “It’s always been a case of the more the merrier,” Karen, who hosts the event at her home, said. “Every year there are some new faces and we always ask them to bring a friend as well.” Karen’s almost legendary Girls Night In started with around 20 guests and now attracts around 50 – that has not just elevated the fundraising levels but also the fun factor. The event’s fundraising is fast approaching the $20,000 mark over its 13 year history.

SCHOOL PROGRAM PRODUCES NEW SURF LIFE SAVERS Beachport Surf Life Saving Club have welcomed 12 new members from St Martins Lutheran College, who have been completing their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) as part of a three day training camp. Comprising two teachers and 10 students, participants kicked off the course with delivery of school sessions as well as a pool session in Mount Gambier. This was completed with a three day intensive training camp at Beachport where participants were assessed and signed off at the conclusion of the program. Beachport Surf Lifesaving Club volunteers assisted the students during the three day camp. Beachport SLSC head trainer Julie Moran was very impressed with the resilience of the participants. “The students should be very proud of their efforts during the three day camp,” she said. “Weather conditions were not ideal; with huge seas and gale force winds, not to forget the prevailing rain, everyone took to the water to develop and build upon their surf life saving skills.” Surf Life Saving SA is a registered training organisation and Beachport Surf Life Saving Club was recently announced as one of 25 clubs in Australia to trial the new pilot program for the Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion

award. The course is designed to be delivered using a blended approach with face-to-face delivery as well as online components. The training manual was accessed through a phone app. Participants completed most theoretical components though interactive online learning, which comprised of practical activities, demonstrations and assessments. The Surf Rescue Certificate has provided participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness including: • surf awareness • rescue techniques including board & tube • resuscitation • communication including radio operations

• standard patrol practises • team work • improving fitness and swimming skills The St Martin’s outdoor education students are now qualified to wear the yellow and red uniform and assist with patrols and water safety at the beach. Some participants have already indicated that they are keen to assist with patrols this summer. Students are able to achieve 10 SACE credits for the Surf Rescue Certificate. Any students who are interested may now continue on to complete other awards within the club such as Bronze Medallion (20 SACE credits) and potentially achieve a Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue). This qualification can count as a year 12 subject and go towards SACE points. Beachport Surf Life Saving Club is preparing for the upcoming season and are always looking for new members. The club can be contacted via their Facebook page.

AUTHOR RETURNS TO REGION The story of Holocaust and Russian prison camp survivor Cilka Klein will be shared locally with the Mount Gambier Library hosting author of ‘Cilka’s Journey’ Heather Morris. The author event will be held on Thursday, November 28, at City Hall from 7pm. The brand new novel is the sequel to Morris’ debut novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz which sold more than three million copies worldwide and was number one globally in 2018/2019. “Cilka is first introduced to readers in ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’, which is based on the true story about Lale Sokolov, a Jewish prisoner of Auschwitz who served as the camp’s tattooist,” team leader library programs Kristi Leamey said. Morris spent years

interviewing Lale Sokolov documenting his story before he died in 2006. “Cilka was a close friend of Lale’s and played a vital role in saving his life at camp on more than one occasion by using her position to intercede with the Commandant,” Ms Morris said. “Lale told me that Cilka was ‘the bravest person he had ever met’ for having endured what she did to survive and I knew I had to find out more and tell her story also and I am very honoured to have written it.” Based on Cilka’s true story, the book details how at just sixteen years of age she was taken to Hitler’s AuschwitzBirkenau Concentration Camp. “Cilka found endless resource within herself as she confronted death and faced terror each day,” Ms Morris said. “Incredibly, despite everything that happened to her, Cilka finds love within the camp.” Although named as the sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz the new novel can be read as a stand-alone story. “The book is confronting at times but it is also a remarkable story of

one woman’s fierce determination to survive against all odds,” Ms Leamey said. Mount Gambier Library is one of just two chosen hosts for Heather’s world tour. Tickets are $6 and available from the Library over the phone by calling (08)8721 2540 or in person at 6 Watson Terrace.

An enterprising Year 8 student has brought her idea to life at Mount Gambier High School earlier this month. Tarlee Winfield transformed the Mount Gambier High School Wellbeing Space into a Pet Therapy Centre with the support of Kym from Headspace and Doc Leopold the Therapy Cat. It was in second term that Tarlee identified that time spent with an animal could improve the well-being of teenage students. She knew that many young people lived in homes that do not have pets and may miss the opportunity to enjoy the known benefits of time spent in the presence of an animal. As an Entrepreneurial Specialist School, Mount Gambier High School offers students opportunities to follow their passion and turn ideas into valueadding initiatives within their own lives or the lives of the community. “I loved being able to learn new things whilst focusing on things I care about, like animals and how my friends are feeling,” Tarlee said. “It was really different from how classrooms normally work and I am now hoping that we can bring pet therapy to Mount Gambier High School more often. The students involved in the Pet Therapy sessions said it was fun and made them feel better.”

Tarlee was encouraged to work independently supported by youth Wworker Trudi Shelton and entrepreneurial learning advisor Callena Rawlings as she took her idea through to inception. Tarlee designed the program for Doc’s visit and a process to select students for the trial, liaising with Headspace and the School to work through policies and procedures to ensure everything was in place, a complex undertaking for a year 8 student. “It has been inspiring to work with Tarlee on her project,” Ms Rawlings said. “She has demonstrated leadership, resilience and an ability to work with complexity. Tarlee has the heart of a social entrepreneur, motivated to improve people’s lives, and I look forward to seeing what her next idea will be.” Mount Gambier High School is focused on finding ways for students to design and implement opportunities to learn in different ways, this pilot initiative is just one example of the new approach being introduced. Tarlee is also gathering pre and post Pet Therapy feedback from the students which will be used to review the pilot and improve for the future.

KALANGADOO HISTORY BROUGHT TO LIFE To commemorate the printing of the Kalangadoo Walk with History brochure a mayoral launch will be held this Thursday. The Kalangadoo Walk with History brochure is similar to others that have been produced for Penola and Millicent. It has been developed by local resident Sandra Young with assistance provided by fellow Kalangadoo stalwarts Nick Hunt and Peter Savage. Guiding the walker to 29 different locations around Kalangadoo, the brochure features a brief history of each site and is an experience for all ages to enjoy and explore. To be held at “The Big Stump” on Railway Terrace in Kalangadoo, the launch will begin at 10am. Guest speakers will include Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll, Sandra Young, Nick Hunt and Peter Savage. A morning tea will be provided by the Kalangadoo Lions. To assist with catering, those planning to attend are asked to please RSVP to (08)8733 0900 or sjm@wattlerange.sa.gov.au by Tuesday.

PODCASTS & COMMUNITY PROGRAMS LOOKING TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH Popping up on banners all over the Limestone Coast are the faces of those who’ve appeared on the Lifeboat SE podcast, where they’ve shared their experiences with different forms of mental health or the tools you can apply to support your mates. The banners have been appearing at The Marketplace, council chambers, Year 12 common rooms and other locations. The stories will also be highlited over coming weeks in Lifestyle1. With a QR code appearing alongside each banner you can easily access and listen to the podcast. Simply scan the QR code with your phone’s camera app and press play when the podcast pops up. You will be able to listen to locals sharing their experience, what they did to seek help and the tools they use to manage the illness as they chat to Lifeboats SE’s Matthew Brookes. Matthew said the podcast - and Lifeboat SE - is there for people to learn about mental health and hear from those who have overcome health struggles and the tools they used to do so. “The podcast is for everyone in the community as with understanding

comes respect and support,” Matthew said. “It shows that if you’re having a rough time yourself you’re not the only one. More importantly it shows how you can look out for your mates and other community members and what you can actually do to help them. The community is lucky to have these people sharing their lived experience to help others on the podcast and the many other community members that are helping others in a variety of ways.” Episodes of the podcast include topics like the four steps to asking R U OK?; the benefits of being in the present; domestic violence; living with health issues like anxiety, bulimia,

REGULAR VISITOR NAMES NEW WHALE A Grey Morph Southern Right Whale has been officially named after it was first identified swimming in Portland Bay in August last year. Nicola Boland was selected the official winner of the Whalemail ‘Name our Whale’ competition with her suggestion of Storm. Ms Boland’s entry was chosen from more than 50 names entered during the three week online Facebook competition. The Millicent based whale spotter, who is a regular visitor to the area, was thrilled to hear she was the lucky winner of naming Portland’s newest whale. “I was delighted to hear that the name was a popular choice. I was inspired to name the whale after the regular storms in this area. The white and grey colour of the whale also inspired the name,” she said. “It was quite exciting to get the opportunity to name one of the whales, as my youngest son enjoys fishing and we are always looking for whales in the bay. As a family we come over to Portland at least three to four times a year from Millicent.” As part of the prize Ms Boland was presented with four Seals by Sea tour vouchers to experience a trip with the family to see the iconic Cape Bridgewater seal colony and marine life. The Portland Visitor Information Centre in conjunction with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) selected the winner to ensure the name was not previously allocated to any other identified and recorded whale. ‘Storm’ will now join ‘Patches of Portland’, ‘Kisme’ and ‘Badu’ on the official identification register as Portland Whales. The whale season is now nearing its final days with 23 whales spotted since September 24 and a total of 168 whales with the addition of one Orca for the season. The last sighting was a Humpback whale on October 28 at Cape Nelson. To keep up to date with whale sightings sign up for notifications via the Whalemail website, or visit the Whalemail Facebook page. SPORT GENTLE SOUL HONOURED WITH NEW CLUB AWARD Kind. Gentle. Selfless. Genuine. Willing. Ask anyone who had anything to do with Rosie Pike and at least one of those adjectives would be used to describe the 20 year old, who tragically lost her life to a catastrophic medical event last month. Having spent her days as a junior and senior netballer at the East Gambier Netball Club, the suggestion was made to honour Rosie with a special award, with Bec Famularo approaching the family – mother Suzie Mitchell, father David and sister Lauren – and everyone agreeing it would be the perfect tribute.

“For the Rosie Pike Memorial Trophy, David, Lauren and I each chose a quality of Rosie that we would look for in the recipient,” Suzie said. The inaugural winner was Caitlin McMahon. “We wanted the 2019 recipient to also be someone who knew Rosie and that’s why we chose this year’s recipient, Caitlin McMahon,” Suzie said. The club has created a perpetual trophy to keep a record of the ensuing winners of this prestigious award, with the individual recipients awarded a crystal shaped glass trophy. “Rosie loved crystals and has a most beautiful collection,” Suzie said. “The qualities of Rosie are engraved on the crystal. Rosie’s trophy will be awarded to an East Gambier Netball Club person who displays her qualities of being kind, gentle, genuine, selfless and willing. It will help to keep her memory alive for us and others.” Rosie started playing at East Gambier in 2009, playing all her junior netball with the club, as well as B Grade, representing the Bulldogs in more than 100 games. She won the coach’s trophy as a 15 & Under player, was part of multiple premiership lineups for East and was assistant coach with Bec Famularo of the 2017 15 & Under B premiership line-up. Rosie was also part of the South East Regional Netball Academy and won the State title at Under 13 level, as well as playing SAPSASA for two years, captaining the side in her second year. But Rosie was about so much more than just playing the sport she loved. She was a developing umpire, volunteered at a number of club events

and functions and was a much loved and valued team member. Despite having moved away to attend university, she would still attend junior trainings in her visits home to assist with those trainings.

SPORT CYCLIST CLAIMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Tess Wight became the 50th young South East athlete to be awarded the Trisha Flett & Sally-Jane Allen Sports Scholarship at last week’s presentation of the memorial award. In its 29th year, the rising star on the cycling scene was one of eight nominees for the scholarship that was set up in the wake of the tragic 1990 accident that saw local teenage sports stars, Trisha Flett and Sally-Jane Allen, lose their lives. From basketball to athletics, from karate to cricket and everything in between, the athletes to have been awarded the scholarship, have often excelled at more than one sport – just like the two girls – Trisha and Sally-Jane – in whose memory the scholarship was established. The scholarship fund was set up following a fundraiser, which saw the community give generously to allow the two families to set up this memorial scholarship. Each year the nominations are assessed by a group of the region’s PE teachers and each year it is a tough

task to choose a winner or in so many cases multiple winners. The scholarship also includes a 12 month membership at Squashbrook and an Intersport Mount Gambier voucher – both long time supporters of the scholarship. Tess (pictured right) has built an impressive resume on the regional, State and national cycling landscape. She competes in both track and road events and has been a regular part of the South Australian elite program since 2017, winning multiple medals while representing her State. She is the reigning SA Individual Pursuit champion in her age level – a title she also held as an under 15 competitor. Tess currently competes at Under 17 level and has her sights firmly set on the upcoming Track National Championships in January before preparing for the Road Nationals which are later that year. Her ultimate aim is the Australian Under 19 track cycling team in 2021 and a chance to compete at the Junior World Championships.

OTHER SCHOLARSHIP NOMINEES: TARA BRYANT (Basketball & Netball) • SCARLET CREEK (Hockey) • HAYDEN CROWE (Athletics) • EMILY DAWE (Basketball & Netball) • CLAIRE HUNTER (Basketball & Netball) • CONNOR PRIOR (Cricket & Soccer) • AUSTIN ROSS (Soccer) MILLION DOLLAR BABY Matildas captain Sam Kerr has signed a lucrative deal with English Premier League team Chelsea for the next two-and-a-half years. The contract is believed to be worth around $2 million, making Kerr one of the highest paid female footballers in the world. Kerr has drawn comparison with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo with her goal scoring ratio of 40 goals in her past 40 games for club and country.

KIDMAN CONTINUES TO IMPRESS IN SPRING SERIES

Race five of the Mount Ganmbier Cycling Club’s spring series had a repeat of the race distance of 36km, allowing the riders to use course knowledge to their advantage. Club president Dean Zeven (above left) led his fellow bunch rider, John Cranwell to a well earned victory. The partnership managed to work well together and finished ahead of the next main group, which had Matthew Opperman sprint home for third, with Rob Mann and Colin Weatherill close on his wheel. Nick Kidman once again dominated by taking out the fastest time. PRESSURE POINT The pressure on athletes on the world stage was further highlighted recently with news that young Australian batsman Will Pucovski, who had been earmarked to make his Australian Test debut this summer, has requested that he not be considered for mental health reasons. This follows fellow Aussie cricketers Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson recently taking indefinite leave from the game due to mental health.

SUN’S DAY IN COURT LOOMS Three time gold medallist swimmer Sun Yang is facing a World Anti-Doping Agency appeal in Switzerland that seeks to ban him for up to eight years for allegedly refusing to give samples voluntarily. WADA is being represented by the lawyer that helped bring down perhaps sports most infamous drug cheat, Lance Armstrong..

SPORT SWIMMERS CONTINUE TO FINETUNE Swimmers from clubs within the Limestone Coast region have recently participated in a local swim clinic. Despite the wintry weather conditions, swimmers and coaches from Mount Gambier, Blue Lake Y, Penola, Dolphins, Keith and Portland Swimming Clubs spent the day at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre. Silver License coaches Vivienne Kennedy (Geelong Sharks Swimming Club) and Karin Reddecliffe (Great Southern Swimming Club) delivered the dryland warm up and pool sessions. Swimmers spent the day further developing stroke techniques, starts and turns in the pool. This clinic followed on from the delivery of a Teacher of Competitive Strokes (TCS) course locally the previous day, enabling clubs to train more coaches to assist with the teaching of Swim Club participants. TCS participants and coaches were able to upskill and work with silver license coaches in the delivery of efficient swimming programs. Other

sessions delivered during the day included a food and nutrition presentation as well as a fitness session by Nat Fox Personal Training. This fitness session predominately worked on core strength and group exercises, putting all swimmers through their paces. The critical sessions were made possible through the generous support of Mount Gambier City Council, for assisting with the facilitation of the clinic through the Junior Sports Assistance Fund, and the Mount Gambier Swimming Club for organising the weekend clinic.

Warriors White were looking to bounce back after a narrow defeat last week and got off to a good start against Concordes United, with hits to Sarah Polderman, Clare Chaplin and Taylor Wilsmore, scoring a run in the first innings. Concordes took back the lead at the top of the second, scoring three runs, including two from a RBI double to Dana Jones. The lead didn’t last long however, as Warriors took advantage of a number of fielding errors by United to plate four runs. Concordes themselves then scored thanks to a wild throw by Warriors and the game was still very much there for the taking. Concordes had a pitching change bringing in Codie Jackway, and she held Warriors to two runs. The score would remain at 7-4, though, as Warriors pitcher Erin Chaplin found her rhythm and drew out a lot of fly balls from the Concordes batters. Polderman was the batting stand out for Warriors, and also fielded brilliantly covering a huge amount of area at short stop. In the end Warriors were able to keep the errors to a minimum and had the timely safe hits that won them the game. A near flawless fielding performance by Concordes White saw them take the points in their match up with Warriors Blue in the late game. Concordes retired the first six batters to start very strongly, and took the lead in the second when they plated two runs thanks to an RBI from Brandi Miller and a safe hit from Megan Wombwell. Pitcher Anna Livingston was dominating the Warriors bats until a safe hit from Kelly Doyle finally snapped the streak of outs. A two RBI double right in the gap from Angela Queale evened up the scores up in the third innings at two apiece, but it was Concordes who stormed back into the lead in the fourth thanks to consecutive safe hits from Miller, Wombwell and Jo Hopgood which saw them score five runs in a hot streak of hitting. Concordes then had a three up three down innings to bat again and Hopgood scored for a second time after having her third hit for the day and being scored by a Livingston hit. Warriors had their best innings in the sixth, where they finally drew the one error made by Concordes all day and made them pay with a double to Daena Wombwell scoring two. Concordes where unable to add on in the last dig stranding a couple of base runners but still walked away with a well-deserved win, eight runs to five. Stand outs for the victors were the dominant pitching display of Anna Livingston, and the batting of Brandi Miller and Megan Wombwell. Coach Jo Hopgood (pictured left) will hope this near perfect fielding display is a sign of things to come for her team. For Warriors Angela Queale had two safe hits and was solid as a rock at third base. WHO AM I?? How many clues did you need? 1. I was born in Tasmania in 1984. 2. At Under 15 and 17 level I captained my State and I was also in my State’s Under 19 team when I was only 15. 3. I vice captained the Australian Under 17 team and captained the Under 19 Australian team. 4. At 16 years of age I was the youngest ever domestic cricket contracted player. 5. I debuted for Australia in one day internationals and T20 in 2009 and in 2010 played my first Test match – it was against Pakistan. 6. I have since played a further 25 Tests as well as 34 more one day internationals. 7. A series of injuries made it difficult for me to get any continuity in the national teams but after a seven year absence I earned a Test recall in 2017 for the Ashes in controversial circumstances given I was not even regularly representing my State at the time and had considered retirement. 8. I was part of the 15 man squad that headed to South Africa in 2018 and was elevated to the captaincy of the Test team during this tour. 9. I have made my name as a wicket keeper- batsman. 10. I have captained Australia now for 14 Tests and will be in charge this week in the First Test at the GABBA against Pakistan. ENIAP MIT :REWSNA

TWO NEW ART EXHIBITIONS TO OPEN THIS FRIDAY The Riddoch Art Gallery is currently installing two exhibitions to coincide with a busy summer program. Opening this Frida at 6pm the exhibitions ‘As far as the eye can see’ and ‘Unbound’ will be on display until Januarynext year. ‘As far as the eye can see’ is a Blue Mountains City Art Gallery touring exhibition featuring work of 22 Australian artists and will showcase contemporary printmaking practices and landscape art. “This exhibition celebrates the

contemporary topography of both landscape and printmaking and challenges these conventional themes through artists whose work reflects the breadth and depth of print practice in Australia today,” Riddoch Art Gallery director Melentie Pandilovski said. “It is an incredibly diverse exhibition with a range of different artists all exploring a common thread of a deep respect for the land and a desire to share a meaningful relationship with it.”

Featured in the exhibition is renowned artist Clyde McGill who will be at The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex to provide an artist talk at 5pm prior to the official opening. “Clyde’s practice is so diverse and his work is collected by major institutions in Australia and overseas so this is a fantastic opportunity for our community to get some insider knowledge about the exhibition,” Dr Pandilovski said. ‘Unbound’ is a solo exhibition by Rory Carter, a young artist from Portland, Victoria and will feature work spanning many different media from printmaking to large scale abstracts and sculpture. “In this significant solo show Rory presents us with an expansive journey, both in subject and discipline and it will really surprise you,” arts and culture development officer Serena Wong said. The exhibition, about a drive to understand the world through a process of making and experimenting, will feature a mural directly on the internal walls of the gallery in the artist’s trademark, vibrant colours. “Working with Rory, I have really come to appreciate his skills as a draughtsman so we have

commissioned him to do a mural directly onto the gallery wall. It’s going to be something special, you won’t want to miss it,” Ms Wong said. To complement the exhibitions the venue will host a summer workshop program including activities for all ages, ranging from screen printing to other craft activities such as a festive farmhouse challenge. “Come along to The Riddoch and Main Corner Complex and grab a program to find out what’s happening over summer, or download one from the Riddoch website,” Ms Wong said.
