COMING EVENTS

COVER - CELEBRATING 10 YEARS

Established in 2010, the OneFortyOne Blue Lake Fun Run, is set to celebrate its 10th anniversary this year when it is run and won on December 1. The event, which traverses three different distances – 3.2km; 6.8km and 10.4km – doubles as a community fundraiser with the current organisers, the Lakes Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, disseminating funds to a wide variety of community groups and projects over the event’s history. The Blue Lake Fun Run has consistently attracted more than 1000 competitors each year, with individuals, business, schools and community and sporting groups from throughout the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria converging on the Cave Gardens, which doubles as the start and finish line for the event, to walk or run one of the three courses. The event has traditinoally attracted serious runners as well as a raft of participants just looking to be involved, with families often participating together, even if it means pushing a pram up the Bay Road hill. Participation from business, schools and community groups has certainly increased over the past decade with participation numbers climbing to around 1300 in the past few years. Thomas Hynes is the name most

synonymous with the event, having won the title from 2012-2017 - that run of victories starting when he was 15 years old - missing last year’s event through injury, while on the women’s side of the competition Lucindale’s Nikki Smart is also a multiple champion, having won the event on four occasions, including the past three. She also made history last year when she finished second overall – the highest finish by any female athlete in the event’s 10 year history. The inaugural winners were both Mount Gambier residents – Danny Habets and Monique Ianella. Mount Gambier’s Daniel Castle won the 2011 event, before Hynes took a stranglehold on the title, including holding the record for his 2017 run, with Victorian runner Bouchaib Chefnaoui taking the title. Ianella went back to back in 2011, with Smart’s first victory coming in 2012, Warrnambool’s Ella Gill taking the

title in 2013, Belinda Richardson, the daughter of former ABC presenter Alan Richardson and council events manager Denise Richardson, who had been on the podium every time she competed, finally took the title in 2014. Alison Wilson was the 2015 champion before Smart went on her run of three winning performances. Registrations are now open for the 2019 OneFortyOne Blue Lake Fun Rub, which organisers hope will attract a record field, so head to www. bluelakefunrun.com.au

ROMAN EMPIRE IN THE SPOTLIGHT The Riddoch Art Gallery is hosting the spirit of Rome in Mount Gambier with the award winning exhibition Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World. To complement the exhibition a program of events is underway to deliver unique workshops and experiences to the community. Still left on the comprehnesive program is a toga life drawing session with local artists April Hague and Jane Van Eeten. Scheduled for Thursday, October 24, sessions involve a model decked out in roman costume, a glass of wine and nibbles in a relaxed setting. “If you haven’t participated in life drawing before book now for the last session, you can improve your skills no matter what level you’re at,” Riddoch Art Gallery director Dr Melentie Pandilovski said. While those curious about a chef’s secrets to cooking great pasta participants can join Chef Ian Perry in the final Italian cooking masterclasses being held on Thursday, October 31. “Spend the evening learning the art of pasta making by cooking squid ink pasta with clams in garlic or hand rolled pasta with braised fava beans and artichokes to share with a glass of wine,” Dr Pandilovski said. Other activities in the program include audio tours and roman vessel sculpting using virtual reality technology. “There is a reason Ancient Roman culture has endured for centuries and these activities demonstrate not only how vast the roman influence was but how

much we owe to the romans today,” Dr Pandilovski said. For further information about the exhibition including the full program of events visit www.riddochartgallery. org.au “We are into the final weeks of the exhibition so don’t miss out on the rare opportunity to experience this incredible culture while it’s on our doorstep.” To book for any of the above workshops contact The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex on (08)8721 2563 or visit the team at 1 Bay Road, Mount Gambier. CELEBRATING POSITIVE AGEING The City of Mount Gambier is celebrating positive ageing from this week to Friday, November 1, with a program of events for those in the community aged 55 and over. The program coincides with ZestFest, a statewide festival for modern ageing, and provides opportunities for residents in this demographic to get out and about in Mount Gambier through a range of specially programmed events and activities. The City of Mount Gambier recognises that the way society considers and responds to ageing continues to evolve and has identified a need for programming to adapt accordingly. “In order to meet the demand for the growing and ageing population Council is looking to reinvigorate its programs, events and activities,” Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin OAM said. Community consultation was recently conducted to evaluate council’s annual programming and service delivery for the local population aged 55 and over, resulting in input from almost 200 residents through surveys, interviews, group meetings and roundtable workshops. Mayor Martin acknowledged that the feedback from the consultation influenced the Positive Ageing program for 2019 in a number of ways. “As a result of community feedback we have incorporated a number of activities into the program across a variety of council sites to increase awareness of the services offered by

Italian style lemon chicken council,” Mayor Martin said. “We have also increased focus on transport with a partnership with Mount Gambier Buslines to offer free City Bus services to seniors card holders over the two weeks.” Activities include art and film experiences at The Riddoch & Main Corner Complex and the Oatmill Cinema, cooking classes with local chef Ian Perry, meditation and family history lessons at the Mount Gambier Library and a guided bus tour of Council’s waste sites including exclusive access to the ReUse Market. There are a variety of activities on offer for all interests and it would be great to see members of our community taking advantage of these unique opportunities, particularly as many activities come at no cost to participants. JUDY NUNN COMING TO TOWN The Mount Gambier Library will host popular Australian actress and award winning author Judy Nunn at the City Hall on Wednesday 30 October 2019 to launch her brand new novel ‘Khaki Town’. Commencing at 7:00pm, the author event will shine a light on recent wartime history. The book is set in 1942 in the time when Singapore had fallen and Darwin had been bombed. At this time Townsville became flooded with more than 70,000 Australian and American soldiers overnight and was dubbed ‘Khaki Town’. The story tells of the racial violence that exploded when United States troops mutinied, turning their guns on their white officers. Armed Australian troops were sent in to attempt to take control of the uprise. The fictional tale and fictional characters are set against the backdrop of real life events that have only come to light in recent years. Tickets for the event are $8, inclusive of a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink and grazing board. Visit the Mount Gambier Library at 6 Watson Terrace or phone (08) 8721 2540 to secure your seat. Tickets are available in advance only.

WOOLUMBOOL HITS NEW HEIGHTS WITH $13,500 TOP No doubt the individual highlight of the Woolumbool three breed ram sale at Lucindale earlier this month was the setting of a new Woolumbool sale record of $13,500 for one of their Poll Dorsets. However, the strength behind the overall sale success, where 185 Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Poll Merino rams sold at a fantastic $1721 average, was again the strong bidding from a core group of repeat commercial lamb producers who support this sale year after year. That was a clear endorsement on the success of the Woolumbool genetics within their flocks. Coming off a hugely successful sale last year that saw 201 head average $1901, and especially the Poll Dorset draft that averaged $2028, Woolumbool’s senior principal Phil Clothier said postsale, “From last year we always expected a little pull back, especially with the Poll Dorsets, yet this was still a good solid sale with great top ends in the terminals.” There were 30 registered bidders, compared with 41 last year, which suggested the sale could tighten up before the end. “Value wise it was a fantastic result, which is especially pleasing as those long and loyal clients who got rams with the performance they were looking for today, at pretty good value,” Phil said. The sale opened with the offering of four Elite Poll Dorset rams. There were two serious stud buyers looking for a top performance ram and unfortunately for each other, they selected the same sheep, Lot 4, W184887, sired by Melton

Vale 160114. An extreme muscle sheep (EMD 3.9) with great length and muscle pattern, it was in the top 10% of all breeds for all three indices, Carcase Plus (225), Lamb Eating Quality (151) and the new Total Carcase Production (156). After an intense and rapid bidding dual, it was Scott and Emily Davidson, Morton stud, Lucindale, who placed the winning $13,500 bid. The unlucky underbidders were Matthew and Amy Reid, Rowallan stud, Murrell, NSW who travelled all the way over to get a top stud ram, but went home empty handed. The four Elite Poll Dorsets averaged $5075. Ten White Suffolk Elites followed, these averaging $2140, with only two going to stud breeders. Darryl Grosser, Oakdale stud, Serviceton narrowed his selections down to two and when able to get the first, W185463Tw under budget at just $2100, he was then also able to chase his other choice, Woolumbool 185369. However, there was more than serious flock ram buyer competition on this ram and it was Dale and Ruth Price, Glencoe who dug in the longest to secure

the ram for their Majardah stud for the top White Suffolk price of $3200. This ram was in the top 10% of all breeds on Lambplan for growth (19.6 for Pwwt), Muscle (3.4), Worm Resistance (-45) and Shear Force 5 (-1.5), plus the three main indices, C+ (234), LEQ (167) and TCP (167). Both these top White Suffolks were sired by W173980 with his first drop on offer this year, not just from Woolumbool, but also from multiple other studs as the result of widespread semen sales. He was widely represented in the White Suffolk drafts of this sale with around 40% being sired by him. “He is the most profitable ram we’ve ever had,” Phil Clothier said, and this is only his first drop of progeny. The flock ram drafts from each breed were sold on two alternating runs of each. The first run of 38 Poll Dorsets was still very strongly sought, topping at $2300 and averaging $1876. However, the second run ran out of buyers, with 35 of 54 averaging $1263. This drop off really had nothing to do with quality, but a simple sale formula of an imbalance in supply and demand this year. In the White Suffolks, demand was comparable with the Poll Dorset flock ram demand last year, with the first run of 39 topping at $2400 twice and averaging $2087. The second run of 54 White Suffolks fared much better than their Poll Dorset counterparts as a couple of significant volume buyers didn’t get a real look in in the heat of competition on the first draft. Of these 54, 49 found new homes at a $1473 average.

WORDS & PHOTOS COURTESY OF JANINE ELEN - FOR SUPERIOR SELECTIONS

The final offering was a highquality draft of 20 Poll Merinos carrying some very impressive bloodlines and performance levels, only two not ranking in the top 10% of the industry on Merino Select for the main indices. This being just the third year Woolumbool has offered Poll Merinos at auction. With increased numbers each year, the Clothiers are still in the process of establishing a reliable client following anything like they have established in their other two breeds. Consequently only eight of the 20 sold at auction to a top of $1000 four times and averaged a modest $900; great value for the three buyers who purchased. Overall, the most prominent ram buyer was Dugald McLachlan, Nangwarry Pastoral Co, Nangwarry. He purchased 25 rams; 13 Poll Dorsets and 12 White Suffolks, paying from $900 to $2100 and averaging $1668. As a guest vendor, Lucindale Area School also offered four White Suffolks, selling two to $1500 and averaging $1300.

LET'S BE OPEN

BATHROOM RENOVATION TIPS TO MAKE THIS ONE LAST FUTURE PROOF Designing a bathroom to age with its residents adds longevity, and there are elements worth building into the foundations of the room to future-proof for accessible living. In the shower, arranging for a slightly larger opening and installing a base made from anti-slip material flush with the floor to prevent tripping. You clould also install a smart loo that is wall-hung and rimless, with cleaning and drying functionalities, and a night light – all activated with a remote and a smart-control thermostatic shower mixer ensures regulated temperature every time, even if someone is using water elsewhere in the house.

extra functionality of a ledge, addressing the usual lack of accessible storage from the bath. Opting for a tiled niche in the shower rather than glass shelves is also a better option. CHECK YOUR LIGHTING While pendant lights are popular these days, this type of light fitting isn’t usually manufactured to withstand steam and moisture. Check the IP rating. The Ingress Protection Rating is an international method, with IP followed by two digits classifying the protection level against intrusion of solid objects, dust and water in electrical enclosures such as light fittings.

The latest trend in kitchen design is open shelf, upper-cabinet-free kitchens. The look lightens a kitchen up by creating visual space, but requires you to hide all the tupperware and mismatched glasses in fewer cabinets. Instead of tearing out your upper cabinets, try updating your kitchen wall decor by placing one or two floating shelves on an open wall. Floating shelves come in many styles and are easy to install. Keep the floating shelf display items minimal and color coordinated for a magazine-ready look. For a bigger change, remove a selected upper wall cabinet’s doors and paint or wallpaper the back of the cabinet. You now have a new open display shelf. To give your new display life, add LED under-cabinet lighting to highlight the items. Battery-powered lights are available if cabinet wiring is an issue.

Advertorial • Bell Studio of Highland Dance

CHAMPION PERFORMER OPENS NEW DANCE STUDIO It is a past time steeped in tradition and having already instilled a love of highland dancing in her two daughters, Lucy & Evie, as well as a raft of other Limestone Coast based dancers, Katie Edwards (nee Bell) is branching out on her own, opening a new dance studio in Mount Gambier. Running out of the Masonic Hall at 4 Helen Street, Mount Gambier, Bell Studio has just opened its doors, offering classes for students from three and a half years old to adults, from beginners to premier standard, for those looking for a fun form of fitness, to those looking to compete at a high level. Studio director Katie Edwards has an impressive resume – both as a competitor, as well as in teaching ranks. The proud owner of 33 championships, including her Grand Australasian Championship in the 13,

14 & 15 Years championship in 1991 and the Australian Commonwealth championship, Katie also travelled to Scotland in 1996 to complete her British Association of Teachers of Dancing certificate, competing at the home of highland dancing while she was there, dancing at the British Overseas Championships, where she finished fourth, and also competed at the World Championships. She returned to Scotland in 2004 as part of the Australian team that performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. “A family friend suggested highland dancing and I loved it from the first lesson,” Katie said. That passion, and a commitment to training and competing, stayed with her until she was 21, when she stepped away, before returning to teaching in 2004, which has been her focus the past 15 years.

And while her love of highland dancing is what keeps her involved, her family’s deep seated Scottish heritage connections also play a pivotal role. Katie’s great grandfather played a pivotal role in the establishment of the South Eastern National Dancing Association and Katie’s grandmother on her father’s side was a highland dancer. And it doesn’t stop there with Katie’s mother and two aunties long serving members of the Blue Lake Ladies Pipe Band. Katie added her National Dancing Association of Australasia teaching certificate to her portfolio and she is a member of that association, ensuring she is at the cutting edge of what is going on in the highland dancing landscape. Katie has added a strength and conditioning component to her classes as well a focus on refining the

basic movements of highland dancing. Bell Studio will also offer NDAAI exams for those who wish to sit them (not compulsory); targeted competitions throughout the year (not compulsory) and private lessons

available by arrangement. Sportsmanship, respect, achievement, cooperation and enjoyment are the foundation values of Bell Studio. See details below to take up this opportunity.

You could say Valentine’s Day has not been one of my busiest days over recent years (or previous years for that matter), but this year things are going to be a little different. There’ll be no more fixed smiles when the girls in the office receive their bundles of flowers, no more fake enthusiasm when friends relay details of their breakfasts in bed, and no more feigned excitement over their dinner dates. This year I’m taking matters into my own hands. This year I’ll be the one handing out the gifts and romantic gestures - and I’ve set my sights on two equally worthy suitors who’ll be receiving a little something from yours truly. Yes, I know I’m being a tad greedy, but the truth is I can’t choose. I just can’t. They’re both blonde, very handsome, and think I am the funniest person alive, so to choose would be impossible.

It is the Mount Gambier business community’s night of nights, where business success stories are highlighted with the presentation of the 2019 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards. HALL OF FAME (Sponsored by The Border Watch) For the first time in the history of the Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame celebrated the induction of four new members. The Hall of Fame commenced in 2005 and was designed to recognise Mount Gambier locally owned businesses that are still trading under their established name and have been trading as such for more than thirty

years. They may have either been handed on as family businesses or sold but kept the established name. It was a diverse group inducted into the Hall of Fame at the October 11 gala presentation. Green Triangle Electronics, where a couple of colleagues had a dream, established this business success story that has continued to grow, but also not only built a strong business reputation on the local landscape but developed a customer base that spans Australia. With a commitment to unsurpassed customer service and a dedication to being at the forefront of all things information technology, Green Triangle Electronics continues to be a respected, successful

The taller of the two is what I’d describe as the sensitive new age type, very in touch with his emotions (definitely not afraid to shed a tear), extremely intelligent and likes his own personal space but also has a tendency to go a little wild when you least expect it. The other is more your athletic, brutish type. He’s a man of few words who likes nothing better than heading outdoors. He’s never shy on affection, loves hugs and gives extremely sloppy kisses (we’ll have to work on this). So two it is. Call me greedy, call me selfish, but I’m going for it. So Happy Valentines Day Mr Five Year Old and Mr Two Year Old. Enjoy the chocolate frogs (I didn’t quite think flowers would cut it with this crowd), and remember, mummy likes the yellow roses - actually anything with a petal is fine!

part of the Mount Gambier commercial landscape. Tony Bolton Optometrist was also inducted in a case where, a short term plan to establish himself as an optometrist saw Tony make Mount Gambier his lifelong home and has seen the trusted optometrist oversee the eye health of multiple generations of local families. He has trained a number of budding optometrists over the years, as well as witnessing eyewear becoming so much more than a way to improve your eyesight but a strong fashion statement with hundreds of designs on offer for clients. Then there is the Cosmopolitan Pizza & Pasta Bar that is still making traditional 1970s pizzas today as Dario

Caiazza continues the legacy of his father Vince. What started out as a snack bar run by Vince and his wife Franca became not just the centre of their family life, with all three children, Dario, Dinah and Marisa, spending hours at the shop during their childhood, as well as working at the popular eatery, but the central meeting point for the local Italian community. Gambier Tile Centre was the fourth of the inductees and it too, is the celebration of hard working migrant families and seeing a gap in the market and working hard not just to fill it but to become a long standing success story. Tony Ianella has been the mastermind of building not just the business but its reputation and that has seen the Gambier Tile Centre remain a trusted name in the Mount Gambier business community. COLBY SHINES AT INDIGENOUS CARNIVAL

Justin Munro has a number of indigenous design football jumpers in his wardrobe and his son Colby always dreamed, he, too, would snare his own such guernsey when he grew up. “I had seen dad’s guernseys and I always wanted to have my chance to represent the tribe as well,” Colby said. Not only did Colby just represent the Lake Condah Wanderers in the recent Indigenous Football Carnival but his team went through undefeated to take the title, with Colby also named best first year player, best Under 21 player and the best player in the finals. T he Statewide Koori Football Carnival was held in Ballarat earlier this month and as a member of the Gunditjmara people Colby was eligible for selection and won his place in the team, alongside the likes of former Collingwood livewire Leon

ANOTHER AFL ‘SILLY SEASON’ ENDS The AFL trade period is over for another year. In previous years , after some initial posturing, every deal seemed to get done but this year saw a few high profile trade requests…. most noticeably Joe Daniher & Tom Papley… not proceed leaving the clubs involved empty handed in terms of improving their position. Most people would see St Kilda, Western Bulldogs & West Coast as clear winners with Carlton, Sydney & Adelaide as the biggest losers but, as always, only time will tell.

NO-ONE UNTRADEABLE IN THE NFL While the AFL teams might be reluctant to trade their best players there are no such issues in the American football league (NFL) with news last week that Jacksonville have traded Jalen Ramsey, the most talented cornerback in the league, to the LA Rams. This follows the New York Giants trading, arguably, the best wide reciever Odell Beckham Jnr earlier this season and Raiders trading star linebacker Kalil Mack last season. All three players were their teams number 1 player showing that no-one is safe in the NFL…. if the price is right.

NO PAINE…GAIN? Australian test cricket captain and wicket-keeper Tim Paine recently scored his first century for 13 years representing Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield game but it hasn’t quietened the noise that South Australian keeper Alex Carey should replace him in the Australian side. Carey is much younger and a far superior batsman. Is the time right to hand the captaincy back to Steve Smith and make the wicket-keeping change

Davis, who played full forward; one time Essendon star Nathan Lovett-Murray, who was the team’s centre half forward and former Geelong player Jamaine Jones. It was initially a nerve wracking experience for the 17 year old, who did not train with the team prior to the event and only knew one player when he turned up for the carnival. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect and I didn’t know how they played and they didn’t know how I played but after the first game I felt I really settled in,” Colby said. “It was a lot quicker style of football and it felt like there was a lot more open space.” Colby was announced as the best under 21 player for his team in the changerooms after the grand final but the other two accolades came out of the blue at the presentation night and it was a boost for the South Gambier player, who wants to take his football as far as he can. Colby spent most of his time in the middle or on a wing and despite the star power in the forward line still managed to sneak forward a boot a couple of goals during the carnival.

Colby has been playing football for more than 10 years and has thrived in the past two years when given the opportunity to play A Grade football and test himself against the bigger bodies and more experienced heads. “Training and playing alongside guys like Brett O’Neil has been great and you learn so much,” Colby said. “Playing A Grade in Western Border you definitely have to work harder and push yourself.” And the Koori Carnival gave him a chance to hear stories from players who weren’t drafted first time round. “The guys were really encouraging and said if you work hard you can make it happen,” Colby said. “They said it is never just about one year.” Colby is already a multi premiership player in junior ranks with South Gambier. In the second game on Saturday night, Central also sored a mercy win over the highly fancied South Indians with a twelve to two run scoreline. South opened the scoring in the first with a single run. Central then went about their business and truly got into young Indians pitcher, Haydn Battye, with the first eleven batters recording seven safehits and four walks which saw ten runners cross the home plate before relief pitcher Ben Nash saw the three outs to conclude Central’s time at bat. Central added two more in the fifth and South doubled their score by adding one in the seventh. Central had 11 safehits, five base on ball, seven runs batted in, one strike out and left four runs on base. South had six safehits, two base on ball, two runs batted in, nine strikeouts and left nine runners on base. It was a high quality contest in the first game of the season, after life members Liz Robertson threw down the opening ceremonial pitch to Marisha Garrod with Sharen Waters batting it to get play underway. The league was also mourning the passing and celebrating the life of Mr Robertson, who was a passionate supporter of the Mount Gambier Softball Association for decades and who could often be found enjoying a game with his wife on a Saturday afternoon. He will be sorely missed. Both teams braved windy and wet conditions but Warriors pitcher Erin Chaplin settled in and Justine Koop and Sarah Polderman combined for a terrific double play picking off Tammy Jones stealing and then Hannah Taylor at the plate. Taylor was in form with two long extra base hits over left field. Dana Jones also had two hits, with Nashemia Dawn, Billie Jones and Tammy Jones all getting a hit each for United. Warriors white played a true team game, welcoming rookies Caitlyn Bignall and Alyce Cagney. Bignell scorched a double to score the first run of the game with her first ever plate appearance. Polderman, returning to the game after several years away, went three for three with the bat, as did Taylor Pearson who was also solid as a rock at first base. Koop had two hits and zoomed around the bases and Clare Chaplin had an RBI single. In the second game, it was Concordes White versus Warriors Blue, and Concordes looked ominous early, with Jo Hopgood leading off with a single to left and being scored by an Anna Livingston bunt. However, Warriors blue defense kicked in, limiting concordes to only two more runs for the match despite the bright start including hard hits to Maddy Sutherland and Linda Dodds, who took pitcher Leyna Bruggemann’s glove off with a bullet line drive. Livingston returned to the Mount Gambier league with a long double and battled hard in slippery conditions pitching to some hot warrriors bats. Standouts were Angela Queale, Nicole Vause, Simone Macdonald and Leyna Bruggemann who all had 2 hits, with Kelly Doyle lining a single. Blue welcome Alison Schultz for her first game in over 10 years and she showed good leg speed along with team favourite Leanne Mullen. In the end Warriors scored a few runs in each innings, giving them a comfortable victory to start off their 2019/20 campaign. The final game of the round between reigning champs Demons and Wanderers was played on Tuesday night at 6pm. RESULTS Warriors White 6 (T Pearson, S Polderman 3, J Koop 2, C Bignell, C Chaplin) d Concordes United 5 (D Jones, H Taylor 2, T Jones, B Jones, N Dawn); Warriors Blue 13 (A Queale, N Vause, L Bruggemann, S Macdonald 2, K Doyle) d Concordes White 3 (J Hopgood, M Sutherland, A Livingston, L Dodds)

CYCLING SPRING SERIES SETS UNDERWAY The Mount Gambier Cylcing Club spring racing calendar got underway earlier this month and a return of past members saw a strong field of 20 senior riders. Seniors raced over the 25km course with eight handicapped groups. The limit group was successfully led home by young Harry Opperman, in one of his first senior races, Louise Abraham was second, and scratch rider, Nicholas Kidman chased the pair down with third and fastest time overall. After the race the Winter series winner, Gerard Coote (pictured far right) was presented with the Brian Saffin Memorial trophy. Juniors were also well represented as they sprinted over a 10 km course, with Freya Miller first ,followed by Molly Opperman, Eddie Buckland (fastest time), and Elmer Buckland. The Spring calendar has a variety of courses and will incorporate an interclub competition with Hamilton cycle club. Nine races will be on offer, concluding on December 9 with the final 50km interclub Christmas competition. Please check the club’s Facebook page for further information. STATE SELECTION FOR FORMER LOCALS

Two former Mount Gambier basketballers are continuing their basketball journey with selection in the South Australian Under 20 State basketball team. Emily Close (right) and Isabella Stratford (left) both received the news last week and Eliza Joynes, daughter of Pioneers championship hero and life member Jason Joynes, is also part of the same line-up. While in a pat on the back for Richard Hill and his Pioneers program, Matt Black, Mitchell Hunter and Malok Makoi, who were all part of the Premier League runner-up squad this season, were all named as reserves for the Under 20 men’s team. EMILY CLOSE She might be at school in Adelaide attending Westminster School but Emily Close did her basketball apprenticeship in Mount Gambier and she has added more accolades to her basketball resume in the past few weeks. Playing in the district competition for Sturt, Emily was part of the division one Under 18 girls in the winter season and took home the prestigious Girls Under 18 Encouragement Award, which is awarded to the club’s most promising junior girl, at the club’s recent gala presentation. And last week she was selected in the South Australian Under 20 basketball team – her first foray into State competition outside the SA Country framework, where she has been a regular representative for six years, ending in Townsville earlier this year when she was part of the Under 18 SA Country line-up before now graduating to single stream teams now on offer at State level, combining country and city based players. Her Under 20 selection means Emily is headed to Canberra in February and she is grateful for the opportunity playing in Adelaide ahs given her to develop her game. “It is a more aggressive style here,” Emily said. “I have definitely found a real difference in intensity in training especially and it has been great to work with different coaches that didn’t really know anything about me.” Emily also said the competition for positions in school teams, club teams and, in turn, higher level representation, including State, also forces you to continually lift your level of play. Emily has continued her netball career as well since making the move, playing Inter 1 for Woods Panthers, as well as getting the opportunity to train with the Premier League, and as part of the Westminster open netball team, they won the State title, defeating Scotch College in the title decider. “That was really awesome,” Emily said. ISABELLA STRATFORD Isabella is in the throes of being part of the Bendigo Spiring in the WNBL, hitting the road with the team at the weekend, and learning just what it takes at elite level in preparing for Australia’s top domestic competition. And, of course, in the middle of next year she is California bound to take up her college opportunity, but before she heads off, she will represent South Australia again courtesy of her selection in the Under 20 State women’s team last week. Her resume spoke for itself, with Isabella’s WNBL commitments as a development player not allowing her to attend trials. It was two years ago that Isabella had a breakout year, exploding onto the national scene after building a strong body or wok representing SA Country at a range of national events. It saw the former Tenison Woods College student make the move to Adelaide halfway through her Year 10 studies, heading to Immanuel College. “When I made the Under 17 national team, I needed to be training in Adelaide so that was why I made the move,” Isabella said. “That was when my basketball really started to take off.” Bendigo Spirit head coach Tracy York has been a key figure in Isabella’s meteoric basketball rise in the past three seasons, having coached Isabella’s school team, that finished second in the 2018 national competition, as well as luring the talented guard from Eastern Mavericks to Southern Tigers in the Premier League this year, where Isabella posted the impressive season stats of averaging 11 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS FOR DANCERS

Following her move into the 12-15 year age group, 12 year old Penola resident Hailee Pearce remains a strong competitor in Australia’s Highland Dancing Championship circle. As a junior in the 11 years and under level, the Margaret Cleves trained highland dancer secured six Championship wins. Hailee’s highland dancing skills have continued

to shine through into the 12-15 year section, with the dancer securing herself another Championship title at the recent City of Port Adelaide Championships held in Adelaide. Hailee won the 12-15 year Championship event with a first place in the Sword Dance, Seann Truibhas and Highland Reel, as well as a third place in the Highland Fling over a group of 14 competitors from South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. Hailee also won the Premier 1215 year Title. Fellow Margaret Cleves student Abbey Freebairn also upheld the same high standard of dancing, finishing runner up placing in the same section. Abbey gained the 12-15 years Championship runner up with a first in the Highland Fling, and a second in both the Seann Truibhas and Highland Reel.

Abbey also placed runner-up in the premier 1215 year Title. Other dancers from the Margaret Cleves School of Dancing to achieve top placings at the City of Port Adelaide event was Zena-Lily Jackson competing in her first Championship, in the 12-15 year Championship event, finishing with three sixth placings in the Highland Fling, Sword and Highland Reel. Correa Bachman placed fourth overall in the 11 years and under Championship, and placed third overall in the 11 years and under Title, while Elisabeth Benny won the 11 years and over Novice Title, and also a first in the lilt and third in the Highland Fling Trophy Dance. Laura LeCornu finished third overall in the Intermediate Any Age Title with a first in the Highland Fling and second in the Sword, as well as winning a first placing in the Highland Laddie, Barracks Johnny, and Flora, and a second in the Lilt, while Anna LeCornu finished fourth overall in the Beginners 9 years and under Title. In the Barrier Reef Highland Dancing Championship, held in Townsville earlier in the month, Hailee finished runner up in the 12-13 year age group, Abbey finished runner up in the 14-15 year age group, and Correa Bachman finished third
