DIABETES TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE

SPECSAVERS CROWNED CITY’S BEST

Diabetes Australia refers to diabetes as “the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system. Around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. This includes all types of diagnosed diabetes (1.2 million known and registered) as well as silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (up to 500,000 estimated)” • 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes • It is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia • More than 100,000 Australians have developed diabetes in the past year • For every person diagnosed with diabetes there is usually a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ every day in a support role. This means that an estimated 2.4 million Australians are affected by diabetes every day • In 2013, diabetes caused 5.1 million deaths globally. Diabetes: • Is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults • Is a leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis • Increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times • Is a major cause of limb amputations • Affects mental health as well as physical health. Depression, anxiety and distress occur in more than 30% of all people with diabetes • The annual cost of diabetes in Australia is estimated to be $14.6 billion

Specsavers Mt Gambier walked away with the top award at the 2019 NAB Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Awards on Friday night. As their 10th anniversary looms next month, directors Kathryn Benjamin and Erica Johnston have worked hard to see the business grow in terms of staffing levels and customers, with their redeveloped premises completed about 12 months ago and it has seen the business claim the 2019 Retail Business Award. The other highlights of the gala presentation was the induction of a record four businesses in the Mount Gambier Chamber Commerce Hall of Fame – Green Triangle Electronics, Cosmopolitan Pizza & Pasta Bar; Tony Bolton Optometrist and Gambier Tile Centre. The Outstanding Employee Award went to Angie Sugden, in what made for a big night of celebrations for Green Triangle Electronics, while the Young Business Leader of the Year when to F45 Training’s Lisa Fyfe. And it is because of all those statistics and the information we now have regarding diabetes that the Mount Gambier Health Advisory Council together with Community Connect are presenting the Diabetes Forum on Tuesday, October 22. With the focus on ‘TAKING THE TIME” to check your own risk of diabetes and ensuring that the community has a basic understanding of the common symptoms of diabetes and the difference between the types of diabetes. Local health providers, Diabetes SA and endocrinologist Dr Steve Stranks (pictured), will provide up to date information regarding preventative measures, importance of early diagnosis, treatment. There will be a wide range of printed information provided and the opportunity to speak with the Health professionals. They are also conducting a survey of diabetes sufferers to gauge interest in establishing a South East Diabetes Support group.

TECHNOLOGY TO PLAY A ROLE IN WINE TOURISM The unique wine experiences on offer across the Limestone Coast and South West Victoria will soon be available at the touch of a button. Award winning digital team, Alpaca Travel, has been appointed to build a new interactive online platform for the Limestone Coast ‘Mixed Dozen’ Wine Trails Project to connect and build on the tourism offering across eight different wine regions. The online platform is set to target international wine visitors in addition to the domestic market in a bid to bolster the global reputation of Australia’s food and wine, with a particular focus on the wine tourist markets of UK and the USA. The new digital planning tool will not only bring together multiple wine and tourism businesses and attractions, but will encourage self-guided exploration with curated itineraries and inspiring stories that give visitors the confidence to venture further. Mixed Dozen project manager Toni Duka said it will function like a digital concierge or experience curator, with the focus more on journeys rather than just giving directions. “Visitors can find a place on a map, but where you add value is by curating a set of unique

experiences that showcase the best of your area,” she said. “It’s about inviting visitors to explore somewhere new and see more along the way; we want to inspire them to take the road less travelled beyond the popular selfdrive travel routes of the Great Ocean Road and Adelaide-Melbourne touring route, to go somewhere that is perhaps unfamiliar and ideally, persuade them to stay longer.” The Spirit of Tasmania, Destination NSW, Visit Grampians, Visit Sunshine Coast and the City of Adelaide are among those to have already adopted the technology, and Alpaca Travel co-founder Zoe Manderso, said the company was thrilled to be working with the Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council. The Limestone Coast Mixed Dozen Interactive Wine Trails Project has been funded through the Australian Government’s $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package, through the International Wine Tourism Competitive Grants program, and 10 other funding partners across state and local government, industry and community. It’s anticipated that the digital platform will be ‘live’ by midNovember this year.

TRUCK SHOW PROVIDES WINDFALL FOR REGION’S HOMELESS Fifty adults, many with children, may have been left with nowhere safe to sleep in Mount Gambier last financial year if funds provided by a major Limestone Coast event were not available for ac.care’s emergency accommodation. The Mount Gambier Family Truck Show committee has allocated funds from the event each year to ac.care and is planning to step up the entertainment and resulting donation in November. Initiated three years ago after former truck driver Adam Smith’s daughter Jaimee heard about the plight of children doing it tough in Mount Gambier in the lead up to Christmas, the truck show not only supports the community, but delivers an exciting family day out. Jaimee heard about challenges faced by families seeking assistance from her friend Mia, whose mother works at ac.care’s Mount Gambier Community Centre, where people grappling with homelessness, budgetary pressures and other challenges can seek help. “It started from two kids talking about others going without at Christmas or facing struggles and from that we decided to organise the first convoy,” Mr Smith said. “We organised the event in 14 days and had 87 trucks participate as a Christmas convoy for kids from Penola to Mount Gambier, leading to a collection of toys, which filled a room at ac.care - that was massive and it has only grown from there.” The event has expanded, along with fundraising through the initiative, delivering $4500 to ac.care from the truck show gate takings. Slattery Auctions recently contributed an additional $3500 after hosting an auction at last year’s truck show, while the Lions Club of Mount Gambier also provided an additional $1000 from funds it raised at the event. Other charities have also benefited from the $14,000 generated at the 2018 event, with ac.care volunteers collecting the gate entry charge of a gold coin donation. The funds donated to ac.care help cover running costs of a furnished unit in central Mount Gambier, which was used for 200 nights last financial year to provide emergency accommodation for 50 adults and 40 children. ac.care Limestone Coast homelessness services program manager Jill Pulleine said the unit was initially leased with the proceeds of another major event for the region Mount Gambier’s Support Homeless People Luncheon. lifestyle1.net | 06

“Annual donations from the truck show have allowed us to retain the unit, which is vital as options for emergency accommodation in Mount Gambier are increasingly scarce – we just wouldn’t be able to manage the costs of maintaining the property, including electricity, without the event,” Ms Pulleine said. She said the support of the property owner, who leases the unit to ac.care, was also vital. “We would really struggle to find accommodation for people at short notice if we didn’t have this unit.” Ms Pulleine explained people seeking help at the community centre on Ferrers Street were offered the unit for crisis accommodation, sometimes overnight and at times for weeks, depending on their situation, while they secured more sustainable options. “People not only have somewhere safe to sleep that night when they may not have had anywhere else to go, but a homely and comfortable space where they can reflect on their situation and we can help them find a way forward,” she said. “You can tell how grateful people are for the unit, especially people with children, due to how well they take care of it.” Mount Gambier Family Truck Show chairman Peter Burchell said the committee of business people behind the event was glad to see the impact the proceeds had on helping people in need. “The trucking industry, including forestry businesses, get behind the event and it is great to see funds go to something where there is clearly a community need and to see it is making a difference,” he said. With preparations under way for the 2019 event, committee member Michelle Nicholls said participating truck numbers had grown to well over 100 with drivers arriving from Adelaide and Melbourne to be part of past events.

This year, the expanded truck show will include motorsport displays, free activities for children, such as laser tag, giant games, a sandpit, miniature train rides and a visit from Santa, hall and market displays, emergency vehicles and interactive items, including a log forwarder simulator and fire fighting appliances. Monster truck rides may also return after being popular at the 2018 event. “The concept is virtually anything with a motor can go in the event, such as street machines and sporting vehicles and the forestry log forwarder competition may be back,” she said. “Once families walk through the gates they can have a day packed with free activities.” An historic photography display will also feature this year, along with vintage vehicles and initiatives aimed at encouraging youths to explore careers in trucking and forestry. “It is not just about entertaining kids, but inspiring youths about careers because many industries are struggling to recruit,” Ms Nicholls said. She said the event could not function without the support of various community groups and service clubs. The 2019 Mount Gambier Family Truck Show will be held at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds on November 23. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE THE 41ST… By ROBBIE TANSEL I got another e-mail this week and at this point it doesn’t seem to be urine related. So that’s got to be a good thing. “Dear Robbie, After reading your most recent hilarious article of all things intellectual, I came across this question on page 25 of the quiz. ‘How many pins are set up at the start of a game of ten pin bowling?’ I wondered if you’ve ever come across questions of similar difficulty? Peter from Padthaway” I’d like to challenge you on a couple of points from your email, Peter. I may be able to justify your comment about my articles being hilarious, although it’s not consistent. I challenge you on there being some intellectual content in my articles. If you find it intellectual, you’ve got pretty low standards for what constitutes intellectual. I guess I’m saying, you’re clearly no Physics teacher. Likewise, I don’t think you can describe that question as having any difficulty, can you? The answer is ten. Ten pins are set up at the start of the game. Like I said, not a Physics teacher. You’re probably someone dumb, right. Like a P.E. teacher. Or a federal politician. Or a reality TV star. Anyway, since you’re a bit simple and you find simple quizzes difficult, here’s another simple quiz for you. How long did the Hundred Years

War last? Which country makes Panama hats? From which animal do we get cat gut? In which month do Russians celebrate the October Revolution? What is a camel’s hair brush made of? The Canary Islands in the Pacific are named after what animal? What was King George VI’s first name? What colour is a purple finch? Where are Chinese gooseberries from? Which seabird has the zoological name Puffinus puffinus? From which material are moleskin trousers made from? Louis the XVIII was the most recent

king of France. How many previous kings of France were called Louis? How long did the 30 years war last? Right, here are the answers. Would it be possible for the good folks at Lifestyle 1 to put the answer part of my article upside down cos that stops people from cheating? Or is that asking too much of the graphic designers? Here goes. Too long; people should talk things over not have wars. Fancy hats are silly so it doesn’t matter. Just buy a nice cap or a bucket hat for a bit more sun protection. Definitely not a legionnaires hat though. The list of people who could carry off the legionnaires hat is one : Ivan Lendyl. Sounds cruel so I don’t want to think about it.

Mac’s Auctions

Do Russians ever really celebrate? Have you ever seen a Russian smiling? No celebrating. Vladimir Putin doesn’t allow it. Is it a brush made out of camel’s hair or a brush for combing camel’s hair? Need clarification of the question before I’m prepared to answer it. Wouldn’t an island of canaries be annoying? I’d rather go to Christmas Island or Easter Island, or Tasmania. King. Pass. Shouldn’t the question be, what sort of animal are gooseberries made of? I think the point is, everything is manufactured in China these days. We should all commit to buying only Australian made gooseberries. Trick question. There are only fish and stuff like that in the sea. No birds. The same as bushpig-skin and slagskin trousers. Women with bad attitudes were butchered in the 80s and turned into trousers. Too many. Who really wants to have a number after their name? People want to have their own identity. Essentially, all those Louis were just sequels, and the sequel is never as good as the original, although I am looking forward to the new Bill and Ted movie. Thirty. Catchy don’t you think. I think the person who named the Thirty Year War also named the fly. How’d you go, Peter? Email me at robbietansel@ gmail.com if you got more than five right and I’ll buy you a can of Coke.

TIME TO MULCH

FOUR WAYS TO REINVENT YOUR LIVING SPACE OPEN PLAN If you don't have an open plan living area it might be time to get out the sledgehammer and create one. There is a reason open plan living dominates modern home designs - it perfectly suits family life and is great for entertaining. Simply removing the wall between your kitchen and living room can transform a space and there are also ways of opening up the space even if that is a load bearing wall - contact a qualified builder and you'll be surprised how easy it can be and how transformative. BRING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE Blending life inside and outside your home is also popular and that can be acheived by converting a wall into glass doors with maximum effect acheived if you choose bi-fold glass doors. Not only does that bring more natural light

NO MATTER WHERE LIFE TAKES YOU, THE TEAM AT ELDERS INSURANCE ARE WITH YOU THROUGH IT ALL

Here are local agents Daniel Menzel from Elders Insurance Bordertown and Damian Carracher from Elders Insurance Mt Gambier on what they have to offer the South East. I got involved in Elders Insurance because: Daniel: After being involved in the insurance industry for over 17 years, Elders Insurance has given me the opportunity to operate my own insurance business in the South East. This has given me the opportunity to deal with local businesses in my area as a local business. Why do you think your clients like working with you? Damian: I believe my clients like that my local knowledge and willingness to help makes for a more reliable insurance provider. The fact that I am always only a quick phone call away gives peace of mind that anything can be sorted out quickly and easily.

Our business is best known for: Daniel: Firstly, our service to our clients. We are extremely accessible and responsive, with our clients dealing direct with us, not a call centre. And in the case of a claim, our claims handling allows us to use local tradespeople and suppliers, with the majority of claims handled by us directly. How important is it that you live locally? Damian: Incredibly important. Our commitment is very much to the local communities in which we live and work. How do you work with your clients? Damian: We work with our clients to find the right cover that suits their

local conditions. In my experience most people have insurance cover, it’s just about understanding your business to ensure you have the right cover in place. But no matter what your circumstances, we’re with you through it all.

into the living space and if you don't have a decking area, this could be the time to install the glass doors and have that flow onto a decking area to esure a seamless flow from the indoors to outdoors when weather permits. FLOORBOARDS V CARPET Floorboards never go out of style and are easy to clean so why not replace your tired carpet by installing a floating floor or reveal the original floorboards. You can always add rugs if required and that also helps update the area as they are cheaper to replace when you wnat a new colour scheme to freshen the space. LIGHTING Focus on replacing hanging light fittings with strip lighting and down lights flush with the ceiling - it opens up the space during daylight hours as well.

Our best product is: Daniel: Business and Farm packages would be our most popular products; however we provide a wide range of General Insurance products including Business, Farm, Commercial Motor, Home and Contents, Car, Landlord, Travel and CTP. Elders Insurance recently won the CANSTAR award for Landlord Insurer of the year! What special skills do you bring to insurance in the South East community? Damian: I am a fourth generation local farmer so I understand the local conditions and intricacies of running a farming operation in our area. Biggest issue facing South East businesses: Daniel: For many farmers, livestock is by far the most valuable component

MORTL AKE

of their farming business. The strengthening global demand for certain livestock has increased their gross value and it is important to have your livestock fully insured, especially during bushfire season.

I spend my down time‌ Daniel: Being involved in the community, participating in such activities as golf, tennis or the racing industry and spending time with my family. For further information please contact the agents directly:

More extreme, high performing animals at the ends of the bell curve are highlighted, and their numbers are more likely to remain constant. “This gives beef producers, and Te Mania Angus, the opportunity to accelerate genetic gain even further, because the predictions of how progeny will perform (EBVs) will be closer to what we see on the ground. The bulls offered in the March 7th bull sale, have data recorded for Gestation Length, Calving Ease, Birth Weight, 200D Weight, 400D Weight and Scrotal Size. Scanning data has been submitted for Rib and Rump Fat, Eye Muscle Area and Intra Muscular Fat. The same applies for structure, where front feet, rear feet and legs are assessed and submitted to Breedplan to create EBVs, which calculate values based on the animal and its relatives. Most recently the entire drop has been genomically tested, using Single Step analytical software which combines the pedigree, performance and genomic information in one single process. The depth of the data collection of Te Mania cattle extends through Team Te Mania Progeny Test herds, where data

collected on farm, in feedlots, and from processors is submitted to the same Breedplan data base for analysis. In the 2018 Autumn Sale, feature sire, Te Mania Garth G67 is in the Top 10 for Angus sires with the most recorded progeny in Australia in the last 2 years. He has had 1,844 progeny analysed throughout 32 herds, which builds the accuracy of his EBVs. The gates open at 9am on Friday, February 2nd, for interested breeders to visit Te Mania Angus, Reichmans Lane, Mortlake. Tom Gubbins and Hamish McFarlane welcome your questions about the breeding program, selecting the right bull for your herd, EBVs and Breeding Indexes. Tours of the property and cattle yards will be offered. More information on www.temania.com.au

While the weather hasn't screamed spring - it is and mulching is one of the main jobs you on which you should be focussing. With the weather warming up, it’s time to mulch, to control weeds, retain moisture and grow better plants. Mulch retains moisture around the plant and reduces watering, puts some organic material back in the ground and it’s the perfect environment for earthworms. It’s perfect to improve growth and reduce fungal problems, and the result is a healthier and bigger plant. The best kinds of mulch are lucerne or legume straw (like peas’ beans), or any other kind of hay. When you apply mulch, remember to leave a bit of space around the base of the plant.

RECORDS TUMBLE AT JANMAC’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY SALE A record highest average to date, substantially up from the previous year, plus a total clearance of all lots offered were the outstanding highlights at the Hausler family’s 40th Anniversary and 15th Annual Production sale from their Poll Dorset and White Suffolk studs at Goroke earlier this month. Spurred on by a buoyant prime lamb market, a packed gallery, which filled early with buyers and spectators who had travelled from around the region, including from across the South Australian border, were buzzing with anticipation as the sale started. The crowd included 55 registered bidders, with a good mix of long term clients and new faces. Bidding began boldly from the start with 20 elite Poll Dorset stud rams selling to the sale top of $5500 and averaging $2940, these setting the pace for the remainder of the auction. The elite Poll Dorset stud rams were sold individually, with the first five all sired by the exciting new stud sire, Kurralea 160234 that was purchased in conjunction with the Ulandi Park stud, SA in 2017 for $15,000. Topping the sale at $5500 was Lot 2, Janmac 180027, snapped up Charlie Koch, Tallegeira Pastoral Co, Frances for his Poll Dorset stud. Paying only slightly under at $5400, the second highest priced ram, Janmac 180446 by Ulandi Park 160141 at lot 10, was bought by long term repeat client Brian Kester & family, Appleton Park, Benayeo. Leading the large volume buyers’ group of successful purchasers was long term repeat clients, the Brook Family from Goroke, taking home 16 rams, a combination of 13 Poll Dorset and 3 White Suffolk, paying to $1700 and averaging $1587. Overall, 10 Poll Dorset rams went to ram breeding flocks which is a significant result for the Hausler family. Other strong volume bidders picking up more than 10 rams on the day included the Robinson family, Edenhope, with 14 Poll Dorset rams to $1700, at an average of $1600; and the Jones family, Frances with 13 rams, 3 White Suffolk and 10 Poll Dorset, to a top of $2200 and average of $1885.

WORDS & PHOTOS COURTESY OF JANINE ELEN - FOR SUPERIOR SELECTIONS

12 Poll Dorset rams were successfully purchased by the Donaldson family, to $1800 and averaging $1675, while longtime supporters for 40 years, the Rich family from Goroke took home 9 Poll Dorsets and 2 White Suffolks, paying to $1700 and averaging $1582. Speaking after the sale, Stephen Rich stated his family bought Janmac rams for their outstanding quality. “These rams have good composition and body structure and when we sell their progeny, we make a good profit,” he said. Craig Rich added that lambs produced with Janmac genetics consistently get outstanding results at market. Speaking after the sale, stud coprincipal Grant Hausler was delighted with the sale result and the support the family received in celebrating 40 years of stud breeding at Janmac. “As one of the larger single vendor ram sales in the region the average achieved here today would be up there amongst the highest averages in the state. The industry is in great shape and the sale results are a sign of this,” Grant said. “We are very happy with how the White Suffolks are coming along and developing nicely, as they give our clients a quality alternative as we strive to meet their requirements. Our rams cater for all clientele and overall, we’re thrilled with the support from both existing and new clients. The family really appreciates the support from all buyers today and we are looking to the future with confidence.” David Hanel, Rodwells Edenhope said it was pleasing to see prospective new purchasers looking at the quality of the Janmac rams. lifestyle1.net | 23

“That average and the hundred percent clearance achieved is a testament to the quality of breeding and sires that have been purchased by Janmac,” Mr Hanel said. “It was also pleasing to see repeat buyers being able to secure their requirements, even with an increase in the average.” The sale was conducted by auctioneers, Richard Miller, Landmark Stud Stock SA, and Dale Dridan, Rodwells Horsham. Above - In the auctioneers’ box are David Heinrich, Landmark Naracoorte and Richard Miller, Landmark Stud Stock SA, with David Hannel, Rodwells Edenhope, and long-term clients, Paul Brook and Bill Rich. Joining them in the ring are Janmac’s Grant and Bryce Hausler, Craig Rich, Jacob McGennisken (Rich Family Farms) and Stephen Rich with daughter Eloise.

READING IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Tenison Woods College’s Junior School participated in the 2019 Reading Hour at the end of last term with a visit from popular, award winning children’s

author Sally Rippin the highlight of the experience. Sally is well-known, with many children having read Sally’s book titles prior to her visit.

The opportunity to meet her and receive encouragement to keep reading, writing and drawing was incredibly special. During her presentations, Sally shared her background and early experiences as an author, as well as tips for how to come up with ideas for writing. She encouraged all children to keep imagining, thinking, writing and drawing and made the dream of becoming an author or illustrator tangible for everyone. A time-lapse video showing the layers involved in creating just one illustration, from a book in her popular series Polly and Buster, wowed the children. Later in the afternoon, children had the opportunity to collect pre-purchased copies of The Book Buddies”- written specifically for The Reading Hour and were able to have a quick chat with Sally, while having her personally sign their books. “What a wonderful opportunity to visit Mountt Gambier, thanks to the Australian Reading Hour,” Sally said. “I was looked after beautifully by the staff at Tenison Woods College and met so many fantastic kids who were excited to tell me all about their favourite books and the ones they were going to write and illustrate themselves. Visiting schools and inspiring kids to read, write and draw is one of the loveliest parts of an already pretty fabulous job.”

But it’s not just about selling homes – Village owner Vince Versace is passionate about the long term investment of all homes that he builds for his residents. Paul and Rae Weir are a perfect example. Vince built their home in Penola back in 1999. Last month Paul and Rae moved into a new Sturt double garage unit – thus continuing the relationship with Vince and Versace Home Builders, who are the integral cog with building Woodlands Grove and Hallmont Estates. “We were very confident purchasing our home at Woodlands after living in the home that Vince built for us in Penola,” said Paul. “It’s also comforting to know that as the owner/builder, if there are any problems down the track, they will be addressed straight away” he continued. “The ongoing maintenance on the outside of our home gives us peace of mind, knowing that we can lock up and leave when we take off on holidays – then as we grow older, it’s something we don’t need to worry about – it’s all done for us!” If an easier lifestyle in your retirement is something that interests you – then NOW is the time to contact our friendly sales team. NEW CHIROPRACTOR IN TOWN

TEST

The Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre has welcomed a new practitioner with Dr Joseph Pang joining the team at the Crouch Street North business. Joseph was born in Singapore but grew up in Sydney, Australia. He decided to study Chiropractic after taking an interest in health and fitness during high school. Since 2014, he has opened his own Chiropractic Clinic in Sydney, had a lifestyle change to work as a Chiropractor in Geraldton, Western Australia, had a business venture in Bangkok, Thailand and is now living and working here in Mount Gambier.

YOUR HEARING

Do you suspect that your hearing is not as good as it used to be? The following questions will allow you to make a quick assessment: 1. Do people seem to mumble or speak in a softer voice than they use to?

YES

NO

2. Do you sometimes miss key words in a sentence, or frequently need to ask people to repeat themselves? 3. When you are in a group, or in a crowded restaurant, is it difficult for you to follow the conversation? 4. When you are together with other people, does background noise bother you? 5. Do you need to turn up the volume on your TV or radio?

Over the years, he has helped many patients with issues such as neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder issues, sporting injuries and the general pains of everyday life. I use a variety of treatment protocols such as Chiropractic Adjustments, Activator, Drop Piece, Pelvic Blocking, Dry Needling and much more. After facing back injuries of his own, including tennis elbow, his goal for all his patients is to get them pain free first, then address any underlying cause of why the pain is occurring, so it won’t come back again later. “I look forward to helping you achieve the lifestyle you deserve,” Joseph said. When not treating patients, you’ll find Joseph at the gym or fishing. He is looking forward to meeting you all at Mount Gambier Chiropractic Centre!

FREE COURSE FOR FAMILIES DEALING WITH DRUG DEPENDENCY An award winning free course for families supporting someone with a drug or alcohol dependency will run in the Limestone Coast for the first time later this year. Brought to the region by Substance Misuse Limestone Coast (SMLC), Stepping Stones is an intensive four-day course run by a skilled Family Drug Support Group Leader. SMLC Project Coordinator Sophie Bourchier (pictured right) said the therapeutic course aims to increase confidence and competence around substance use in family units. “It really helps families to be able to manage themselves and their relationships with their family member or friend who is using,” she said. “It will be a safe space to get a better understanding of what people are going through, come away equipped with better self-care skills and also hear from other people in similar situations. “We thought that it would be a great course to bring to our region to see whether we could support families better and in a way they can take home to continue their support.” It’s the first time Stepping Stones has been run in regional South Australia for nearly 10 years. Earlier this year, SMLC was awarded

Federal funding for the next three years. Into the future, Ms Bourchier said the group were looking at ways they could help bridge the gap in local services. “The aim is to utilise our funding to bring programs or courses to the region that other agencies are not funded for or don’t have the staffing to accommodate,” she said. The course is funded by the Department of Human Services and will be run in Mount Gambier over two weekends in November and December this year. Previous participants of the course had left overwhelmingly positive feedback, Ms Bourchier said. “The testimonials speak of changes in family dynamics, a deeper understanding of what people are experiencing and also use words such as ‘life-changing’,” she said. Ms Bourchier asked for any interested community members to contact her by lifestyle1.net | 32

FOX CONTROL ON THE AGENDA Do you know the benefits of fox baiting in spring? It is an often overlooked, but critical, part of a successful control program. Not only will it help protect our native wildlife, it will also reduce fox numbers in the lead up to lambing in autumn. Natural Resource Management Officer Michelle Sargent said spring is breeding season for foxes, with an increased food demand for rearing young. A coordinated approach is key to effective fox control. “Foxes do not recognise property boundaries. Working with neighbours to bait at the same time will have a much greater result, reducing both the fox population and level of reinvasion.” For fox, pest or weed control advice, contact your local NRMO or the Natural Resources centre in Mount Gambier on (08)8735 1177. SPORT PIONEERS FORCE THEIR WAY INTO ELITE COMPETITION It’s official – the Mount Gambier Pioneers have forced their way back into the country’s premier second tier competition with NBL1 rubber stamping the club’s application to join the competition, which is the new look league created in response to the demise of SEABL. Run by Basketball Victoria, in conjunction with the NBL, NBL1 debuted this year but the Pioneers were unsuccessful in its inaugural season, playing, instead, in the Basketball SA Premier League, where the men’s team lost the grand final and the women’s team, which was created from nothing in a matter of a couple of months, bowed out in a nail biting preliminary final. For club officials, the acceptance letter, which arrived at the end of last week, has ended one of the most difficult 18 months in the club’s rich history. “It’s been an outstanding result after what has been a pretty difficult period,” club president Tom Kosch said. “I am proud about how we’ve gone about it and obviously we’re excited about being part of the NBL1 competition, it is an ever growing competition and as far as professionalism goes,

it has been amazing what they have achieved in their first year. The club has worked really closely with NBL1 to establish the expectations they have for the club to be part of the competition.” There will be increased financial requirements as the club returns to the elite national competition, that includes Tasmanian franchises, and, especially for the women’s program, will require some serious recruiting, so the challenges are not over but the major hurdle has been overcome – earning a place in the competition in the first place. What the club can be assured of, is the community support that continues to be the foundation of the 30 year old club. “The community support we’ve received throughout 2019, especially with the expansion of the women’s program, has just been outstanding,” Kosch said. “We really value what the community has done when we had out backs against the wall and we knew we had to pursue this opportunity in NBL1 for the sustainable, long term future of our basketball club.” As the club did when part of SEABL, the Mount Gambier Pioneers will look to provide a pathway for men, and, now, women, in this new competition. “We hope young Adelaide men and women will see the opportunity to play in Mount Gambier as a point of difference and an opportunity to improve their basketball,” Kosch said. For men’s head coach Richard Hill, there has been mixed emotions with the formal notification from NBL1, after a verbal commitment from a couple of weeks ago. “We’ve just been waiting for that official letter so that is a relief,” Hill said.

“It’s been such a rollercoaster for the past 12-14 months and in a way it has been hard to get my head around this but it is great to be back in a competition we should be a part of.” There will be no US imports and the recruitment of Australian talent will now move into overdrive. “Some how or other we will make it work,” Hill said. The multichampionship coach believes his 2019 line-up that lost the Premier League grand finals would have been a play-off contender in NBL1 in 2019 and believes, while he will need to replace Kentrell Barkley and Dayjar Dickson, has a good core group to work with and has had preliminary discussions with Adelaide based talent he spoke to ahead of last season when the SEABL was still operating. “Both teams will need to be better to compete in NBL1 but it will be much more of an overhaul for the women’s team than for the men,” Hill said. The call up to the NBL1 competition might also see former players lured back to the club but it will be a case of watch this space for the next few weeks as Hill and Sutton’s phones start to run hot. “I think our men’s squad will look similar to this season,” Hill said. Given NBL1’s women’s competition attracts the majority of the WNBL’s star players, coach Matt Sutton knows he has some roster rebuilding to do so his team can be competitive but he again looking forward to the challenge of heading up the women’s program. “I’m just excited to keep doing something that I’m really passionate about,” Sutton said. “I’m excited for the club and that we’re still alive.” The locally based talent has been training and now it is all about recruiting. “We certainly need to make our group stronger,” Sutton said. The season starts post-Easter in April next year.

NEW BENCHMARK West Coast Eagles have secured star midfielder Tim Kelly from Geelong…..but they gave up a lot to get him! West Coast will send picks 14, 24 and 37 in this year’s draft plus its first round selection in 2020 in exchange for the 24-year-old, pick 57 in this year’s draft and a third-round 2020 selection. In addition to giving up such a massive haul of picks West Coast also signed Kelly to a deal worth $5 million dollars over 6 years. Let’s hope Kelly’s form doesn’t drop off.

BASEBALL RETURNS TO THE DIAMOND Central and South emerged winners from the opening round of division one baseball. Central secured a comfortable victory over Federals on Friday night, while South fought back late in the game for an impressive victory over Tigers in the Saturday evening game. Central opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first and Federals held an early lead when they replied with two in the bottom of the innings, but from this point on Centrals took control of the game. They took the lead, scoring two in the second and piled on eleven runs in the fourth. After conceding two hits in the first innings Centrals pitcher Dylan Chuck took control on the mound, conceding only one more hit for the game, while striking out eleven Federals batters in just six innings. Nathan Taylor struggled on the mound for Federals, his cause not helped by numerous errors in the field. Kane McMillan who replaced Taylor late in the game, showed promise keeping the Centrals hitters quiet for the final two innings. While Federals could only manage three hits in total, Kyall McClean and Brad Lynagh each had three with Alex Ridding making a great return to the sport collecting two for Central. Dean Hamilton and Jacob English started on the mound for their respective sides South and Tigers and for the early part of the game both kept their opposition scoreless. It wasn’t until the fourth innings that Tigers opened the scoring. Two consecutive hits

saw them score three runs. South started their fight back in the top of the sixth. Damien O’Dine and Dean Hamilton who both hit safely, scored on Travis Lockwood’s single. In the top of the seventh, lead off Ryan Placcuci walked, Ben Nash singled and Bruce Morale made the most of this only hit for the game, batting in two runs to see South in the lead. Morale also scored giving South a two run margin. South kept the pressure on late in the game, adding three more runs in the top of the ninth and although Tigers threatened in the bottom of the ninth they were only able to score two runs, South holding on for an eight to five win. English was solid on the mound for Tigers, keeping a clean scoresheet through his five innings, with Riley Rolph the best with the bat collecting three hits. Hamilton backed up his good work in the mound with three hits, with Hayden Battye and Steve Issacson rounding out a solid team batting performance by South, each collecting three hits. A FIRST FOR AUSSIE BEN It may have been as the shot clock expired on the first half of a pre-season game — and come against a team from China — but Australian born Philadelphia 76ers point guard Ben Simmons has hit his first NBA three-pointer. Many analysts believe that Ben Simmons becoming a confident 3 point shooter is the only thing holding the 76ers back from an NBA title.

ANOTHER SOUTH AFRICAN STAR JOINS BIG BASH Not to be outdone by the Brisbane Heat signing of AB De Villiers the Melbourne Stars have secured their own South African legend with the signing of fast bowler Dale Steyn. Steyn has taken over 400 test wickets and over 250 wickets in the short forms of the game.
