COVER • BOOK FAIR DOUBLES AS MENTAL HEALTH FUNDRAISER Mount Gambier’s City Hall will be transformed into a book lovers’ paradise this weekend when the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier hosts its annual book fair with thousands of books set to be on offer across all genres and for all ages. Children’s books will be a feature of this year’s fair courtesy of one of the club’s other programs – Books in Homes. The publisher that provides books for this popular program that hands over books for children in our region’s schools to take home and start building their own personal library, are also providing a collection of new children’s books – a first for the Rotary Book Fair. The club is also working hand in hand with the Mount Gambier Library for another first - virtual reality experiences on offer, through Ricky Koopman 11am until 1pm on Saturday. The major fundraising event is made possible through the generous sponsorship of major sponsor the City of Mount Gambier, as well as a raft of other generous businesses, community groups and individuals. The fair promises genres from romance to travel, cooking to self help, sci-fi to classics and everything in between and if you want to donate books to the cause, you can drop them off at Blue Lake Real Estate at 44A Gray Street anytime this week before Friday 12noon. The fair runs from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 4pm on Sunday, with entry to the City Hall via the Cave Gardens entrance. For just a gold coin donation

This year, proceeds from the book fair will be channelled into Australian Rotary Health and the Lift the Lid program which tackles mental illness. Lift the Lid on Mental Illness is Australia Rotary Health’s national fundraising initiative for mental health research. It has a goal of reaching the $20million dollar mark over the next three years for mental health research. The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier is looking to support this venture as 100 per cent of the money goes to the research.
With almost one in five Australians experiencing mental illness in any given 12 month period and 45 per cent of the population experiencing mental illness in their lifetime, the mental health space has become a key focus for the service organisation. With research showing that people with mental illness recover well and are able to lead fulfilling lives in the community when they receive ongoing and appropriate treatment, Rotary wants to ensure the uptake of that help improves with current statistics showing only about half of those suffering from mental
illness receive treatment. Lift the Lid on Mental Illness funds are used to develop and trial preventions and treatments for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. NARACOORTE SET TO CELEBRATE ITS WORLD HERITAGE SITE Time to shake off the lazy bones, put on your sneakers and celebrate the fossils at the Naracoorte World Heritage Festival and Run. The Naracoorte Caves will come alive on Sunday, November 24. In 1857, guided by the flickering light of a candle deep in a cave at Naracoorte, Reverend Julian TenisonWoods stumbled across thousands of tiny bones of rodents and small marsupials buried at the base of crystal columns. Without knowing it, Woods had found a time machine of sorts – a record of biodiversity and environment spanning more than half a million years. Fast forward to fifty years ago, in 1969, and one of the world’s 10 greatest fossil sites was discovered at the Naracoorte Caves when Professor Rod Wells and Grant Gartrell discovered the largest and best preserved megafauna remains. Twenty five years later, in 1994, the significance of the fossils was recognised on the World stage when the Naracoorte Caves were inscribed on the World Heritage list. The World Heritage listing recognises the diversity and the quality of preservation of its fossils and the scientific value of the fossil deposits. The fossils found at the Naracoorte Caves allow you to step back in time, giving an insight into 500,000 years of history and a fascinating insight into Australia’s prehistoric past. The Naracoorte World Heritage Festival and Run will celebrate these
two unique anniversaries with a Mega Fest of activities at the Naracoorte Caves. The celebrations kick off at 7.30am with the inaugural Naracoorte World Heritage Trail Run. There’s a course to suit everyone, choose from the 22km Mega Fauna Run, 14km Stoney Point Run, 5km Dippy Run and the 1km Fossil Dash. Appreciate the bushland and pine forest trails, the local kangaroo population and other native wildlife, pass sheep farms, vineyards, and not to mention experience the unique limestone formations that are the Naracoorte Caves. The Big Fun of the Festival runs from 10am to 4pm. The activities start with the Welcome to Country, official opening and Trail Run presentations at the Mega Stage. Big Stories will be told in the Blanche Cave, where you can join world renowned singing palaeontologist Professor Flint on a musical adventure celebrating the extraordinary animals found in the Naracoorte Caves. Including songs about thylacoleo, and wonambi, Dancing with Diprotodons is a journey of discovery to the place Professor Flint first experienced these amazing animals that once dwelt in and around Naracoorte. It is a journey shared with many Australians, and people from around the world. A journey to the learn about creatures of the World Heritage
Naracoorte Caves. At 12.45pm, in the Blanche Cave, the Naracoorte Caves Music Ensemble premieres Ivan Skawronski’s composition Adventure To The Limestone Caves. The Naracoorte Caves Music Ensemble commissioned Ivan Skawronski to compose music for this festival. “This music is a tale of exploration, an epic romp through the wilds and down into an uncharted cave system,â€? Ivan said. “Like any great adventure, the piece is exciting, rich, and a little exotic, with something new around every corner. It celebrates the spirit of adventure and scientific endeavour, as well as the discovery of a national treasure: a massive trove of fossils that acts as a tiny window into a lost world, giving hints about the extraordinary prehistoric animals that once held coveted places in Australia’s pantheon of iconic fauna.â€? The Naracoorte Singers will set the scene for Adventure To The Limestone Caves with a performance of the song This is Naracoorte‌ This is who we are at 12.30pm. At 1.45pm in the Blanche Cave take a trip back in time with fossil and cave exploring legends Professor Rod Wells and Grant Gartrell, the men responsible for finding the immense amount of megafauna remains in the Victoria Fossil Cave 50 years. Hear Rod and Grant, two blokes with a passion for the unknown and a spirit of exploration, retrace their fateful steps that led to the World Heritage listing of the Naracoorte Caves.
Local vertebrate palaeontologist Dr Liz Reed will run a special tour, Picnic Ground to World Heritage, at 3.15pm. The Naracoorte Caves World Heritage Area is the major research site for the University of Adelaide’s paleontological research team, where Dr Reed is a Research Fellow in Paleontology. Throughout the day the University of Adelaide palaeontologists will provide fun filled activities including fossil displays and demonstrations at the Fossil Lab and fossil dig sand pit. Palaeontologists work to reveal the secrets of the caves by excavating fossils revealing the earth’s evolutionary history and telling the story of Australian’ mammals. Throughout the day there will be special cave tours, join the Fossil

IN THE GARDEN
One woman’s look at the lighter side of kids, life and growing up! There’s a little man in my household who, while barely big enough to hold up his size four pants (sometimes they still fall down if he runs), is gearing up to join the big world next week. SCHOOL. And, like all mothers preparing to drop their little sweethearts off to that big, big, big school yard for the first time, while I think he may be ready for it, I on the other hand know that I am not. As the days get closer and that first day of term draws near, if the truth be told I’m actually beginning to feel more than a little nervous, agitated even. It’s daunting. It’s scary. It’s unsettling. And that’s just for me! Mr Five Year Old on the other hand is taking it all in his stride. He’s got his new pencil case, lunch box, school bag, size five pants (which will definitely fall down when he runs) and library bag and he’s ready to go. The school has two playgrounds and its name sounds like McDonalds and that’s all he needs to inspire him to happily begin his scholastic years. I wish I was that easily placated. I’m sure once the first day is over I’ll settle down, then I can start concentrating on the first day of high school, first date, first day at university, first day at work. I think I’m already experiencing heart palpitations and the sweats – but maybe I’m getting a little ahead of myself. The worst thing is I know I’m going to have to go through all this again in another three years - maybe Mr Two Year Old may be keen on home schooling?
What a buffeting we have had in recent weeks and this has, without doubt, been one of the longest, coldest, drawn out starts to spring in a long time, if you can even call it spring. It must be, nevertheless, as the blossom trees and plants all around us are telling us so. The wonderful thing about spring is the awakening of many of the trees, shrubs and myriad plants from their dormancy or resting period over winter. Spring bulbs are in full swing and the blossom trees around the region are looking stunning despite the horrendous winds. We have been madly standing up advanced trees and securing them during these blasts at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, both in our retail and growing areas amazed that the blossom hasn’t blown to Tasmania. At Limestone Coast Advanced Trees (167 Bay Road, Mount Gambier) the Spring Blossom Festival is in full swing with hundreds of blossom trees including weeping cherries, mop top blossom trees, magnolias, crab apples and shrubs putting on massive displays. If you haven’t called in now is the time to come for a drive an marvel at the array on offer and pick up some stunning trees for your garden. With up to 50% off selected blossom trees and shrubs now is a great time to not only get a beautiful plant but bag a bargain at the same time (see advert facing page). An array of varieties of Weeping Standard Japanese maples which are always sought after for their fine, lacy foliage and look stunning in pots or beside a pond or water feature, many are half price in the Spring Sale, too. We deliver throughout the Limestone Coast daily and into Western Victoria daily, as far across as Geelong and Horsham and have just opened up a new daily door to door service overnight to Adelaide and the

whole of regional South Australia, as far as Mildura, and beyond, in addition to us sending plants and trees right across Australia through our online facility. Last long weekend we sold heaps of weeping flowering cherries which are all looking amazing in full bloom, especially the white with double pink just bursting in to flower as I write and we have just brought another load of magnolias in from the growing area, in full flower and bud, with the new dwarf series being extremely popular for smaller gardens and pots. Spring is also seedling time, with a vast array of flowering seedlings with bulk trays of petunias and marigolds
S.O.S FROM DROUGHT STRICKEN FARMER Wattle Range Council has been approached by a drought stricken farmer from Condobolin, in New South Wales, with a herd of approximately 500 Shorthorn cattle. He is currently running the cattle on a former blue gum plantation block across the border in Naracoorte Lucindale Council, however he is rapidly running out of feed. After exploring a range of options with him that included a request to drove his cattle throughout the council’s rural road network, council was unable to find a suitable solution for a range of reasons. Council therefore would now like to call on the local community to see if anyone has any innovative ways that they may be able to help. If you have any vacant land that needs mowing, spare or old fodder that needs moving, or any ideas that may help out a fellow farmer, please give Gavin Stuckey a call on 0429 952 502 or email him at gdstuckey@bigpond.com lifestyle1.net | 06
on special and tomato plants are coming out of our ears with all sorts of specials available for spring. I think we could safely say that tomato planting time is here and that the weather can only go forward from here. Last year we were not able to provide decent stocks of our now famous Seed Sweet Potato Tubers so you can grow your own plants in your own backyard or even pots. We now have good stocks, once again this year, to the other extreme where we are selling them at half price, so you will get between 10 and 12 sweet potatoes from one seed sweet potato tuber, so hurry in.
Our 25–40% off normal retail pricing across the entire nursery has always been something we are proud to maintain despite increasing costs on inputs, wages, freight etc and our evergreen magnolias have managed to catch the sale radar of the Boss, with all the Little Gem, Kay Parris and Greenback and Alta varities reduced in the sale, as well as the new releases, Inspiration and Free Spirit, the new low growing, groundcover variety. These are ever popular garden favourites ideal for hedging or as specimen trees with beautifully perfumed flowers. Fruit and nut trees are also in blossom with some of our almond trees bearing nuts already and masses of flowers on the avocados, so there should be some good crops on even our smaller trees this season. Discounted avocados and assorted fruit and nut trees ends on Sunday, October 27, unless sold out prior. Roses are in full swing, too, with some flowering already despite the cold winter and spring and we have big reductions on standard roses available for those wishing to pick up a last minute bargain. Spring weather has also brought many of us outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and even dine outside. Our new season outdoor furniture styles are due in shortly but we are fully stocked with all of our range of solid teak and stone furniture, cast aluminium, wicker and other hardwood ranges. There are some spring specials on outdoor settings as well as coffee/ casual settings in real wicker which is often hard to find (see website for our full range of outdoor furniture). The Spring Blossom Festival goes on until Sunday, October 27, at Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees joining forces to offer this amazing display at 167 Bay Road, Mount Gambier, just a stone’s throw from the Blue Lake.
HITCHCOCK THRILLER COMING TO HELPMANN STAGE With equal parts farce, clowning masterclass and heart-stopping noir thriller, The 39 Steps is Patrick Barlow’s hysterical stage adaptation of John Buchan’s classic novel and Hitchcock’s hit 1935 spy thriller film. After a sell-out season in 2016, State Theatre Company are bringing back The 39 Steps, complete with the stellar original cast. This wonderfully deranged comedy features four actors, playing 139 roles of fast-paced fun, thrilling action and riotous invention and Mount Gambier audiences have two opportunities to see this masterpiece - October 16 and October 18. Set in 1930s London, the story is a classic portrayal of one man’s flight from wrong accusation through a series of improbable adventures as he is pursued by authorities. The painfully British and devastatingly handsome, Richard Hannay finds himself in the clutches of a beautiful woman, Anabella Schmidt, who later reveals herself as a spy. She has uncovered a plot called The 39 Steps, but she is murdered clutching a map of Scotland. Hannay must solve the mystery of the 39 steps and save his skin before it’s too late.
Ends Sunday October 27th

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ON THE HUNT FOR NEW IDEAS The new president of Mount Gambier’s longest-running business association has a call-to-action for the local business community – ‘we want to hear from you’. Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce president Hayley Neumann, who was voted into the top role in August, said the chamber was looking at ways they can better serve the needs of the local business community. “Whether you’re a sole trader working from home, or running 15 or 300 staff from multiple sites, if you’re currently doing business in Mount Gambier, we want your insight,” she said. “The chamber has been around for many decades has a proud history of advocating on behalf of local business and industry, however we want to understand how we can serve our members better. A strong and diverse membership base gives us an active voice to lobby all tiers of government on the important issues facing business and industry today.” Board member Helen Strickland said the group was in the process of revamping its membership benefits and structure, in line with current and future member needs. “During the years I’ve been involved with the chamber, Mount Gambier’s traditional business landscape has changed dramatically,” she said. “We’ve got a shift from bricks and mortar trading to online, an increase in health sector employment, major new industries and education facilities and also a strong rise in sole traders

The chamber will be looking at ways to restructure our memberships to involve these types of businesses and also include retired businesspeople, whose knowledge is incredibly valuable.” The chamber has also recently welcomed local businesswoman Candice Fennell, from OneFortyOne, to the board. With the chamber’s annual Outstanding Business Awards night coming up this Friday, Ms Neumann invited newcomers to come and enjoy
the chamber’s most popular event. “We’ve got a great night planned with an excellent guest speaker in Jordana Borensztajn, who is an expert in social media strategy, an author and comedian to boot,” she said. “The awards will celebrate those doing great work in our local business community but also perhaps give the audience some fresh ideas and insight into what others are doing. Maybe you’ll go back to your own business with a little added inspiration.” Any feedback or ideas would be utilised in the boards plans for the
future and Ms Neumann said the event was the ideal opportunity to talk freely and frankly. “Come and pull up a chair and have a chat with myself or Ben, Helen, Candice, Jane, Venny or Craig on the night. Our ears are open and we’re keen to hear your ideas.”

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 39‌AND 40?‌ By ROBBIE TANSEL I got this email this week via text message. “Dear Robbie, Did you hear about the expert who is suggesting that the pain women go through in child birth is all in their head? Duncan from Dunkeldâ€? Something tells me that the next time your wife sees you, the pain will all be in your head as well. Although, she may inflict pain elsewhere as well. Anyway, the long and the short of it, Duncan, I knew it. I knew that women have been carrying on and exaggerating how difficult it is having a baby all these years. I would have thought that they already get enough attention for having a baby, without making out that it’s really hard work. Maybe that’s what it is. The baby is stealing their attention so they’ve had to come up with something so they’re not forgotten. I once had kidney stones, Duncan, and I’ve heard of women who’ve had kidney stones and also had a baby, and they say that the kidney stones were worse. You don’t hear me carrying on about it still ten years later. Simple message, ladies, enough is enough. Stop with the carry on. Get the baby out and then let’s all just get on with life. I’m not prepared to waste a whole article talking about this one, so here’s another email I received this week. Just to provide a little background if you didn’t read last week’s article, I wrote about how successful men are, as studies suggest that on average we get over 99 percent of our urine into the toilet across a year. That probably doesn’t help much. Studies have also found that if there is a target in the toilet bowl, for example a suction cupped fly or a ping pong ball, then we become 80% more accurate. That’s like a trained army assassin level of accuracy. “Dear Robbie, Now I would be absolutely wrapped with a 99.95% success rate. Even 80% sounds pretty good. I am not sure if accuracy lessens with age or there are other contributing factors that are probably best not mentioned! However, the toilet bowl is 24cms wide and 34cms long. I consider that to be a reasonable amount of space to get the entire contents where it is meant to go. The 1.5 litres is more than acceptable; a probable 5.1 means a lot of mopping of toilet floors!! As always, I live in hope, and tomorrow I am off to try to find and purchase a suction cupped plastic fly also in the hope that accuracy does improve by 80%. If 80% of 5100 is 4080, does that mean the residual going elsewhere, e.g. the toilet floor will be 1.020 litres?? If so, yahoo; that I can cope with. Carole from Castertonâ€? I’m glad you got into the Maths spirit Carole and did some measuring. I wonder if anyone has ever thought about increasing the size of toilets to improve accuracy. As the obesity problem increases, having a bigger toilet is probably not a bad idea anyway. Even if your husband is missing to the extent of 5.1 litres per year, that’s still an over 99% success rate. I think you need to get him a trophy of some kind to celebrate that achievement. What a legend. I don’t want it to sound like we men should simply be resting on our laurels. I know we’re already 99.73% successful with our urine, but I think we can do even better.
Being accurate for women is a lot easier due to sitting down and this is definitely something that men can consider. On the plus side it’s nice to sit there and relax while doing your business. On the minus side, it really does take the challenge and skill out of going to the toilet. I don’t know about anyone else, but it boosts my self-esteem when I hear that satisfying splash. Sometimes I say out loud, “Yes, I did it! The only way to improve the accuracy is to practice after all. As a middle ground, maybe sitting for the first pee of the day may be worthwhile. This would have to be the most inaccurate pee of the day, due to being half awake and not really concentrating on what you’re doing. Speaking of the satisfying splash, I think this may obliquely point to one of the reasons for urine not quite reaching its intended destination at times. Sometimes I avoid the pee hitting the water in the toilet as I want to be quiet in my ensuite toilet and not wake Donna while she’s sleeping. Obviously aiming for a slightly different and diminished target makes inaccuracy more likely. But it’s worth it to ensure I don’t interrupt Donna’s sleep. You’re welcome, sweetie. Surely wet bed socks is a small price to pay. Hopefully we’ve exhausted this topic now. If you’ve got something more you’d like to add, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

TWO DECADES OF SUPPORT It was in 2000 that Leanne Kosch and Kay Holloway hosted the first Breast Cancer Luncheon in Mount Gambier and at the end of last month, what became the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group celebrated 20 years of providing support, raising awareness and fundraising with an afternoon tea honouring past and present committee members and community groups and individuals that have contributed to the work of the group. Evan Kosch, who has hosted Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group events at the Commodore on the Park, for the past two decades said the day was about sharing memories. “In the early days it was pretty tough for us all,” Evan said. But he knows Leanne, who lost her battle with breast cancer in May 2001, would be proud of what the group has become and how long it has continued the work she began. “We just had to knuckle down and do it and here we are 20 years later,” Evan said. Group member Jill Gilmore said the group saw the 20th anniversary as the perfect opportunity to pass on their gratitude to a generous community. “Our community is extremely generous and gives lots and lots to different organisations,” Jill said. “We are a group of women who didn’t know each
other but became close working for the same cause.” And the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has been the benefactor of that community generosity meaning programs such as the Helping Hand Bag Project and their more recent work in the lymphedema space, as well as fundraising to refurbish Adelaide accommodation for local patients and upgrading of chemotherapy facilities at local hospitals. One of the group’s members from the early years, Lynette Hirth, also spoke at the event, on behalf of herself and Kaye Chalk, covering the first decade of the hard working group. “When you’ve been touched by cancer you are given so much encouragement from people from the community, from friends and health care providers that you do want to give back,” Lynette said. She fondly remembered that inaugural lunch – its success all but forcing the group to form and to make the luncheon an annual event. Hosted by former ABC presented Stan Thomson and boasting guest speakers the calibre of Amanda Vanstone,
Dorinda Haffner, Natasha Stott Despoja and Michael Angelakis, that first decade saw the luncheon raise around $14,000 each year. “We just wanted people to be aware of breast cancer and it was such a growing disease amongst our community,” Lynette said. “We were always blown away by the generosity of the Mount Gambier, Millicent and Tantanoola communities – they were so good to us in helping raise these amounts. We were very proud and humble to have raised the money we did.” Lynette and Kaye Chalk stepped away from the group, believing it was time for fresh blood and new ideas and the luncheon has since become the now, always sold out, Pink Party – a cocktail event, still hosted at the Commodore on the Park. This year’s event is on October 25. Long time supporter of the group and best friend of co-founder Leanne Kosch, Wendy Richardson marked the 20th anniversary with some wonderful anecdotes and a $200 donation. Maria Knightly is another long serving committee member with the group, who has been the driving force behind the Helping Hand Bag Project, arguably the project most local breast cancer patients are familiar with and see as a genuine life saver for patients and their families. Instigated in 2012, the bags were originally valued at $300 each but through hard work and continued fundraising, the group now provides $600 worth of fuel vouchers, food vouchers, massage vouchers and other helpful boosts for patients with 233 bags having been handed out to this point. The Laura Thomas created calendar was one of the fundraising efforts that enabled the group to up the ante with the Helping Hand Bags project. Providing lymphedema treatment in Mount Gambier, thanks to Therapy for Life physiotherapist Shelley Blachut, has been the most recent project for the group, to help sufferers deal with the debilitating disease that is treatable but not curable. The group has financed the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment. Above (top) - Most of the current Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group committee.

Gina Surth’s motivation for running an annual breast cancer fundraising event is simple and personal – her mother battled the disease and lived to tell the tale. It was in May 2014 that Gina’s mother had her first biopsy with the results being inconclusive. She didn’t tell anyone about the doctor visit but when it came up in conversation with Gina a fortnight later, Gina marched her mother back to the doctor, a second biopsy was done and stage two breast cancer which had spread to the lymph nodes was discovered. That led to a mastectomy and chemotherapy and that is when Gina and her family became aware of all the support available for patients and families on the breast cancer journey. “The information packs the Cancer Council gave us were so helpful,” Gina said. “And then there was the ongoing support and the breast care nurse and while mum got just about every side effect and complication in the book, because we had the information we were able to walk her through it.” Born in Mount Gambier, Gina started her fundraising efforts in Shepparton, which was home, before her 2017 return to the region, not just because her mother had been touched by the disease but because there have been other family members locked in battles with breast cancer. The Pink
Supper Dances were a huge success and by the time she left Shepparton, she had about four under her belt with the final supper dance raising $2500. This October 26 will be the second time Gina has hosted her Pink Supper dance in Mount Gambier. Last year it was at the Blue Lake Golf Club, with around 30 people attending and more than $700 raised. This year, North Gambier Sportsmen’s Club is on board as the venue, and looks set to be the ongoing venue, with Gina committed to running the event every October as part of the swag of Pink Ribbon events held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The night is all about fun and there is no talk of cancer, no guest speakers – just entertainment. “Mum has come to the events and that’s what she loves – she doesn’t think about cancer, she was able to forget about it for one night and just have fun,” Gina said. Her mother is now in remission. The
2019 event is being headlined by Gina and her husband who perform under the name Just Us, with Kim Ritchie, the other headline act. Those two musical acts will provide country and country rock from the 50s, 60s and 70s, while the James Morrison Academy is providing some entertainment, along with the Mount Gambier Rock ‘N’ Roll Group, the local line dancing club, Pine City Twirlers and vocal performances from the Mount Gambier Choral Society as a night of wall to wall music and dancing is on offer, running from 6pm to 11.30pm. “Every 15 minutes there is different entertainment,” Gina said. Tickets are $25 a head, which covers a meal and supper, and with bookings essential, you need to contact Gina on 0419 852 463, with $10 from every ticket sale going to the fundraising effort and the rest simply covering the cost of the meal. All the entertainers are performing at no charge to support this important cause. There are already more than 60 people booked in for the 2019 Pink Supper Dance on October 26.
PARTY IN THE POOL TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER March 7 next year is the day when pool owners around Australia will join forces and raise money to continue the fight against breast cancer. An initiative of Compass Pools, and supported by local supplier Donehue’s Leisure, the Pink Pool Party program is a part of Compass Pools partnership with the McGrath Foundation - a partnership dating back to 2016 - as they look to help raise funds for more breast care nurses. Head to www.pinkpoolparty.com.au for full details on how you can host a pool party and raise money for the McGrath Foundation - fun and fundraising - a great combination. lifestyle1.net | 28
GET YOUR MAN TO THE DOCTOR We have spent the past few years educating women to get thier breasts checked so if they do have breast cancer it can be caught early when treatment can be more effective and less invasive and we need to do the same for the men in our lives when it comes to prostate cancer. It is equally important for men to head to the doctor to have a prostate examination because the same theory applies - early detection makes for a much better prognosis. WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in the prostate. These abnormal cells can continue to multiply in an uncontrolled way and sometimes spread outside the prostate into nearby or distant parts of the body. Prostate cancer is generally a slow growing disease and the majority of men with low grade prostate cancer live for many years without symptoms and without it spreading and becoming life-threatening. However, high grade disease spreads quickly and can be lethal. Appropriate management is key. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? In the early stages, there may be no symptoms. In the later stages, some symptoms of prostate cancer might include: • Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate • Finding it difficult to urinate (for example, trouble starting or not being able to urinate when the feeling is there or poor urine flow) • Discomfort when urinating • Finding blood in urine or semen • Pain in the lower back, upper thighs or hips. These symptoms may not mean you have prostate cancer, but if you experience any of them, go and see your doctor. WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS? Factors that are most strongly linked to an increased chance of developing prostate cancer: • Age: Prostate cancer is an agedependent disease, which means the chance of developing it increases with
Breast Care Consultant Susan in store
Wednesday 23rd October 9am - 4pm age. The risk of getting prostate cancer by the age of 75 is 1 in 7 men. By the age of 85, this increases to 1 in 5. • Family history: If you have a first degree male relative with prostate cancer, you have a higher chance of developing it than men with no such history. The risk increases again if more than one male relative has prostate cancer. Risks are also higher for men whose male relatives were diagnosed when young. REDUCING THE RISK OF DEVELOPING PROSTATE CANCER There is no evidence that the following
protective factors can stop prostate cancer from developing, but they can improve your overall health and possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer: • Diet: Eat meals that are nutritious. Refer to the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. What is good for the heart is good for the prostate. • Physical activity/exercise: There is some evidence to show that physical activity and regular exercise can be protective factors for cancer. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes of a day.
THE FACTS THAT MATTER • In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men • Approximately 3500 Australian men die of prostate cancer each year • More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer lifestyle1.net | 29

LOCAL SPORT HISTORY MAKERS They are set to make history when the first ball is bowled and coach Craig Hicks is hopeful it will be the inspiration and foundation for an all female competition in the coming years. Mil Lel Cricket Club is fielding the first ever all female team in the Under 12 competition in the 2019/20 Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association junior season. It is believed to be the first time an all female team has competed in the home and away cricket competition and has taken some serious recruiting and marketing to pull together the 10 players necessary to field the side. Over the past couple of seasons the club has had between two and four girls as part of their junior program but as numbers grew, Hicks realised recruitment of just three more girls in the end would make up an all female team. “It will be tough for the girls and it won’t be easy up against the other boys teams but we really want to make this work and hopefully get more girls interested in playing for Mil Lel and then, in time, at other clubs as well,” Hicks said. “The girls are already working hard and we will continue to work hard so we can be competitive.” Six of the girls are new to the sport, while the others have been part of the Mil Lel program. “A couple of the girls are really pretty handy and the others are improving all the time,” he said. The
team has already secured the OK Pie Shop as its first sponsor but Hicks is pounding the pavement for more support. “Because they are new to the sport, they don’t have any of the gear or anything,
so we will be looking for support to get all the girls kitted out,” he said. The junior cricket season start is a fortnight away.

LOCAL SPORT BOWLS SEASON UNDERWAY
The Kingston SE Bowling Club, the home club of the Lower South East Bowls Association president Jeff Pope played host to the Lower South East Bowling Association official opening at the end of last month. The weather was cold and tricky, however it didn’t deter 80 visitors and locals coming together to catch up and enjoy a day of friendship. Special guests included Member for Barker Tony Pasin, board members, Bowls SA director Patrick Lynch and wife Helen, LSEBA life member Janet Lawrie and Region 1 events manager Barry Oliver. Mr Pasin was the guest speaker and spoke about the many grants available for all sporting organisations and how his staff are willing to help
with advice and applications. Most of these grants are for amounts up to $20,000 and the assocaition has strongly recommended all clubs contact his office for assistance in obtaining funds for any type of club projects, Bowls SA’s Mr Lynch discussed the format of the Super League competition that will be played over six weeks in the evenings in February and March. Winners of LSE Champion of Champions, Region 1 Champion of Champions, and the LSEBA Pennant Winners for 2018-19 were presented with plaques by board members Jeff England, Norman Vaughan and Neil Watts. Barry Oliver presented the Region 1 Championship Plaques. Ella Pietersma, from Millicent, was asked to roll
WINTER SEASON WRAPS UP FOR 8 BALL ASSOCIATION The Mount Gambier 8 Ball Association winter season grand finals, were held recently at the German Club with three out of the four matches going down to the wire and being decided by the 15th and final frame. Division 1 Minor round premiers Meerkats took on defending premiers Underdogs in what was an all German Club affair for the second consecutive year. You would have to say Meerkats were starting favourites after easily defeating Underdogs 8-4 in the 2nd semi final to progress directly into the grand final and they definitely looked it when Tony Renzi stepped up to the table and confidently cleared when he faced Underdogs captain Darren (Smerk) Pink. But the tables were soon turned after Underdogs won the next five frames on the trot to put themselves in a very commanding position. The team was up and about and had really found their voice but were soon well and truly silenced with Meerkats dominating the reminder of the second round and levelling the score at five frames apiece. With the match now in the balance the defending premiers hit back to be two frames clear and one win from victory through strong performances by Tony Montesanto and Joe Ratcliffe but the challengers dug deep yet again with Meerkat captain Travis Helbig and longtime collaborator Trevor Wilson winning the next two to make it a hill-hill decider. But the fairytale ending was to be denied for the debutante Division 1 grand finalists when SA Women’s state representative Karla Bowd wasn’t quite able to
contain this year’s “most frames” winner Shaun Patzel in a tough and tight final frame which saw Underdogs claim the trophy for the second year running by the narrowest of margins. Division 2 Last year’s premiers Crawlers who this year relocated to Linksview in lieu of the Eastern played in their umpteenth Division 2 grand final taking on RSL Rockets. They had to work a little harder for the win this year receiving more resistance than they did from their opponents in 2018. Crawlers led all the way and eventually won the match 8 frames to 5. Division 3 Lakers who were out for blood after falling heavily at the hands of fellow Commercial Club competitors Cavemen last season came out of the blocks well against German Club Nemows. But to their credit Nemows bounced back well and were looking the goods midway through the final round when they were leading 7-6. But it was not to be as the Lakers ladies Mel Hodgson and Toni Greenwood rallied and took the final two frames to claim the win. Division 4 Two fresh faces for the grand final this year with Jens1 and Jens2 facing off in the derby. It was the latter who jumped out to a good 4-1 lead by the completion of the first round but slight favourites Jens1, headed by Scotty Plunkett, responded well and stood firm when the score was 7 all to win the match in a nailbiter.

8 BALL ASSOCIATION SUMMER SEASON With the winter season done and dusted we now look forward to the summer competitions that will be happening soon. First up is Johnny’s Drawn Singles which will be run out of the German Club this year and starts Wednesday, October 23, and will go for six weeks plus one week for finals on December 4. Entry is $50 per player, there are entry forms at the club or on their fb page to print out so get your names in asap. Alternatively you can get in touch with John Slotegraaf or Dan Champion to state your intention to enter. Next up Chris Schembri’s extremely popular Summer Series Mixed teams competition which has been running many years is likely to start later than usual on the 1st Tuesday of November due to the SE Women’s 8 Ball League season running extraordinarily long this year. Also at the German Club they will be running the Friday Night Knockout Series beginning Friday, November 15, which will be pretty much the same as last year consisting of six weekly knockouts including scotch doubles, blackball, mystery scotch doubles, killer, and speedball, and will culminate with the German Club Open Singles on Friday, December 20 (and Saturday, December 21, if required). All knockouts are just 10 bucks entry with all noms going back into prize money with the exception of the German Club Open Singles which will most likely be $25 entry to allow healthy prize money to be awarded. There will be drink specials offered and meat raffles run every Friday night and a BBQ tea or similar made available on specific nights if the demand exists.
THE ROCK ROCKS Professional wrestler turned movie megastar Dwayne Johnson returned to the ring last weekend for Smackdown in a huge coup for WWE. It is Johnson’s first appearance on WWE programming since WrestleMania 32 in 2016.
LINEBACKER BANNED Oakland Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict has been suspended for the rest of the 2019 NFL season, the longest suspension in NFL history, following a helmet-to-helmet hit and for repeated violations of unnecessary roughness rules. The 29 year old Burfict was suspended by the NFL to start both the 2016 and 2017 seasons for violation of player-safety policies, and again in 2018 for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs.
