MILLICENT ORCHID SOCIETY ANNUAL SPRING SHOW Creating with LEGO is an enduring childhood memory for most of us and if the recent success of the Hamish Blake hosted TV show LEGO Masters taught us anything, it is that many people continue that love affair with LEGO well past childhood. Emma Robinson is one of those selfconfessed LEGO lovers and two years ago she decided to test the waters in this region and hold a LEGO Fan Event. Empak Homes BrickGambier was a huge success with around 600 people checking out the exhibition and it even saw the formation of a Limestone Coast LEGO Users Group that meets monthly at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. The event only grew last year with 1500 people streaming through the doors and this year looks set to be even bigger with some headline acts set

to attend the October 6 and 7 event, being hosted at the Mount Gambier Showgrounds. Jordan, Miller and Kale, from LEGO Masters will be part of the 2019 Empak Homes BrickGambier as well as the usual exhibitors and interactive displays. “You can’t ask kids, in particular, to come to a display of LEGO and not touch,” Emma said. Organisers are expecting around 50 exhibitors, including Melbourne, Phillip Island and Gippsland exhibitors for the first time. “I love the way it brings people together, especially generations of families,” Emma said. Many of the exhibitors are award winners at other comparable events, including 16 year old LEGO prodigy

Connor Brennan, from Adelaide. Empak Homes BrickGambier will be open 10am to 5pm on both days with $7 for a single ticket and $20 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children). There will also be LEGO for sale, new and used, the children’s building competition finalists, as well as a raft of prizes and challenges. A photobooth and onsite catering will also be available. “You really have to see some of the creations to believe them,” Emma said. “I have been fortunate enough to go to quite a few of these events in Melbourne and Adelaide but we wanted to do something right here and make it affordable for people to enjoy everything LEGO has to offer.” The event has been made possible

TARPEENA ICON TAKES A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE This weekend, past students and teachers will be taking a walk down memory lane, remembering life at Tarpeena Primary School. This Saturday’s festivities are set to celebrate decades of memories at the small community school which closed its doors at the end of 2011. Shirley Little will be part of the weekend reunion and she will have as many stories as any with her association with the school starting in 1946 as a student. “My brother and sister were already there and I had two aunties that had gone through there and then my own daughters and then my two granddaughters,” she said. Four generations of Shirley’s family called the Tarpeena school home and it was such an integral part of Shirley’s life that she was unable to attend the final day of the school. “I knew it would be too emotional,” she said. Shirley remembers door knocking every house with Grant District Council CEO Russell Peate, at the time the school was facing closure but in the end, the doors were closed forever. Back when Shirley was a student, her mother was an active member of the Welfare Club that used to raise money to provide all sorts of equipment and programs for the school. “They raised enough money at one stage to buy a piano for the school,” Shirley said. “I think we might have been the first school in the area to have our own piano. It cost a lot of money

and to be able to buy it was such a big thing for the school.” The Welfare Club used to cater weddings as part of its fundraising and Shirley’s was one of those weddings. “The parents in that club worked really hard,” Shirley said. Shirley continued that family tradition of being at the forefront of school fundraising and in her time, reverse cycle air conditioning was purchased for the school as well as smaller items such as sports equipment and televisions. “I don’t think students at Tarpeena have ever wanted for anything,” she said. Having run the town store and post office for many years, Shirley can also lay claim to probably having purchased a raffle ticket from every student that attended the school. She also fondly remembers the annual school concerts. “We used to have it in the football clubrooms and there was standing room only every year,” she said. When Shirley first started at Tarpeena, there was one class of around 30-40 kids and one teacher and one building. “We used to salute the flag and sing God Save The King – that shows how far back I go,” Shirley said. There were no school uniforms, kids just wore their regular clothes. “And we pretty much wore the same clothes for a week – it was a different time but we were happy,” Shirley said. “I was

probably wearing whatever clothes my sister had worn the year before.” A second teacher, fresh from university, was employed while Shirley

was still young and the school was divided into two classes. “I can still remember the green curtain they put up in the middle of the

room to separate us,” she said. In the early days, the teacher used to live on site in a small out building the kids called The Hut. “It was basically one room with a bed, a table and a stove,” Shirley said. As the school grew, that arrangement changed and teachers often stayed with local families, especially in the first few months of their tenure. The school also used to host dances for the town and that is one of the most enduring memories from Shirley’s childhood. “There was live music and they were great fun and we would just curl up under a table and sleep when we got too tired while our parents danced the night away,” she said. “We used to take the desks out of the classroom on Friday night and put them out on the verandah so there was room for the dance.” Shirley was at the school at a time when some student rode horses to school and tied them out in the back paddock, while most walked and some did have pushbikes. Shirley does remember what a culture shock going to high school was after her tight knit upbringing at Tarpeena. “I had never seen so many people in my life in one place,” she said. The weekend celebrations are centred at the football club with full details on the reunion facebook page.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO LUCINDALE The young and young at heart, from throughout South Australia and Victoria, are expected to onverge on Lucindale

this October Long Weekend to the annual Art in the Sticks weekend. Now in its ninth year, the Art in the

Sticks event has developed a strong following from across the region and attracts visitors to experience ancient gum trees, lush paddocks and historic buildings on Cluain - a working organic beef property - and will this year be held over the weekend of Saturday, Ocotber 5 and Sunday, October 6. This year’s headline exhibition of Art in the Sticks is titled Regeneration and will feature an eclectic collection of works from a range of artists including paintings, sculpture, photography, jewellery, furniture, textiles and wearable art, in multiple galleries including rustic shearer’s quarters, shearing platforms, paddocks and next to a dam. Also on offer will be artist walks and talks, a one kilometre amble amongst the art, featuring hands on workshops, readings by the Poet MJ, food offerings, local wines and boutique beers. Visitors are encouraged to book early for Sunday’s Farmers Fare Lunch with the return of McLaren Vale caterer Billy Dohnt from BillyDohntDoes. It will feature a rustic paddock to plate feast of local produce held within the ambience of the magnificent shearing shed with music by the James Morrison Jazz Academy. Co-creators Hamish, and Christa Mlakar - along with the exhibiting artists – are committed to a strong focus on live music, promising a line-up including Kelly Menhennett and Jack Lane, along with Thomo and Julianne and Sleuth.

TEST

According to Hamish, the weekend is designed for people looking to see and experience something different - and comes with a slow and relaxed vibe. “Being the long weekend, it’s a great opportunity for friends and relatives

visiting the region to head out to a beautiful grazing property and enjoy something unique,” he said. “It’s a friendly, welcome, warm event, with Saturday having a more folky country style atmosphere with loads of creative activities - including workshops and ‘ambles with artists’ on offer - against a backdrop of fabulous music. Sunday’s focus is a bit more on the Farmers Fare lunch, and this year we’re looking forward to some smooth tunes from members of the James Morrison Jazz Academy.” Artist in the Sticks is a camping and pet-friendly event, with organisers particularly loving seeing travellers visiting and staying for the whole weekend. Workshops include a ‘Seven piece challenge’ led by local sculptor Mark de Nys, Dan Kane and Robe’s Tom Davidson, and ‘Goreshop’ with Mel Cecotti. Cluain is located one hour from Robe and Mount Gambier and half an hour from Beachport and Penola. ‘Art in the Sticks’ will be held on October and 6 with gates open from 11 am to 6pm. Entry $10 per adult and children under 15 free. No EFTPOS available. Camping with shared facilities available. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS… By ROBBIE TANSEL A friend told me this week that studies have found that men on average miss the toilet to the extent of 1.5 litres of urine per year. To be clear, they were saying 1.5 litres of urine ends up on the floor, rather than in the porcelain (or the urinal). Now when I heard that stat, I initially thought that was pretty disturbing. But when you drill down into it a bit more, I don’t think it’s as bad as it sounds. Join me as we do some Maths. 1.5 litres is 1500 millilitres. Hopefully I didn’t need to unpack that for you. If you spread that 1500 millilitres out over the 365 days of a year, it comes out to about 4.1 millilitres per day. That’s actually not much urine at all spread out over the course of a day. Let’s examine it further. The average person passes 1.5 litres of urine through their kidneys each day. Just for the record, 1.5 litres is still 1500 millilitres like it was about three sentences ago. That equates to 0.27% of the average daily urine hitting the ground. Turning it round, that means that 99.73% of urine is going to the intended location. I don’t know about any of you, but if I was 99.73% successful in any aspect of my life, I’d be pretty happy. 99.73% on a Maths test? You beauty. 99.73% of women saying yes to me

when I ask them out for tea? Winner winner. 99.73% of the time my children Shaquille and Lebron doing what I ask them to? That’d lead to a few less fights. 99.73% of the world being nice to other people? There’s world peace. Thinking about this further, I thought, “I don’t notice four millilitres of urine sitting around on my toilet floor. How can this be? I wonder if Maths and data analysis can help me solve this mystery as well.” Here’s what I came up with. I’m at my home, awake and peeing at semi-regular intervals, for about seven hours a day. I’m awake about sixteen hours a day in total. That would mean

that about seven sixteenths of my four millilitres is on the ground at home. That’s about 1.8 mils on the toilet floors at home. I’ve got two toilets, so that would mean about 0.9 millilitres per toilet. Obviously I’m not going to notice puddles on the floor. Someone is going to have to tell me what the problem is. If you take out the first pee of the day, which surely is the most challenging one, as I stumble halfawake into the toilet, with my eyes closed to deal with the first electric light of the day, I’d guess that my peeing accuracy is probably one hundred percent. Other studies I’ve read say that

male’s accuracy is improved on average by 80% if a target is put inside of the toilet bowl, whether that’s a ping pong ball, a suction cupped plastic fly, or a picture of a politician that really pushes your buttons. Suddenly that initial 1.5 litres per year becomes only 300 millilitres per year. I’ll cut out a few steps of the Maths for you; that’s only 0.05% of urine missing the mark, or a 99.95% success rate. My only concern for the target in the toilet tactic is that it might become boring. I’m sure I’d get a bit tired of peeing at a static target. I’d need to install some sort of device for shooting projectiles across the toilet like what the clay target shooters have. The more I think about that, shooting moving targets might still end up with urine hitting the mini flying clay targets, but still not landing in the dunny. So let’s be clear, only 1.5 litres of urine missing the target each year is very impressive. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Instead of grizzling about us getting urine on the floor, women should be praising us for how amazingly successful we are. We’re remarkable. And we don’t even have to sit down to achieve it. If you’re a teacher and think this could possibly be the best Maths lesson you’ve ever heard of, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com and I could come and do a guest appearance in your school.

FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW

NEED MORE SPACE BUT CAN'T AFFORD A BIGGER HOME? It’s safe to say that for most working families, maintaining the home they already own is enough of a challenge financially. And though things might be starting to feel a little cramped, buying a bigger home to accommodate a growing family probably isn’t feasible. But just because you can’t upsize, doesn’t mean you have to give up your dream of a spacious pad altogether—it just means you have to get creative. But - don’t push plans beyond your limits—both financially and literally and always use the existing footprint of the home. Paint should be a renovator’s best friend. It is cheap and can freshen up any space and instantly transform it. When updating your home, it’s best to keep the palette neutral, injecting your own personal style into the space with striking new light fittings and furniture. Making the most of multifunctional furniture can really help maximise a small space. New

sofa beds on the market are very comfortable and help with accommodating guests without compromising on aesthetics. We often focus on maximising floor space in the home but neglect walls and height—a slightly higher bed with storage or a fold down desk can be really useful in children’s and teenagers bedrooms in particular. For families who are looking to add another bathroom, kitchen or laundry, making the space versatile is a great way of keeping costs—and floor space—manageable. Bathrooms can be designed beautifully to hide laundry facilities or kitchens can include built-in study areas that make the area usable for different purposes. Abonve all, whether your renovation ideas be big or small - if you don’t know what you’re doing, ask someone who does.

If you’re a beginner to veggie gardens, start small. It’s better to be thrilled by what you produce in a small garden than be frustrated by the time commitment a big one requires. Plus, it makes sense to learn gardening basics before investing tons of time and money in this new hobby. You’ll get a feeling for how much time gardening takes. You’ll find out if you like spending time outside planting, watering, and weeding. You’ll learn how much produce you and your family can eat over the course of a summer. A good size for a beginner’s vegetable garden is 10x10 feet, about the size of a small bedroom. Keep it simple. Select up to five types of vegetables to grow, and plant a few of each type. You’ll get plenty of fresh produce for your summer meals, and it will be easy to keep up with the chores. Think about how much you and your family will eat and how likely you are to freeze, can, or give away excess produce. Then be realistic about how many seeds or plants you need to put into the ground.

NEW FORESTRY INITIATIVE PROMISES SIGNIFCANT GROWTH IN LOCAL TIMBER INDUSTRY The Green Triangle forestry industry of South Australia and Victoria has been boosted by Australian Government backing to drive investment and grow jobs. Assistant Minister for Forestry and Fisheries, Senator Jonathon Duniam, and Federal Member for Barker Tony Pasin said the Green Triangle strategic plan—launched last week in Mount Gambier—would protect and grow the Green Triangle’s vital forestry industry. “Australia’s forestry sector is vital to our regional communities, directly employing around 52,000 people and many thousands indirectly,” Assistant

Minister Duniam said. “We want the sector to continue to grow, and the strategic plan being launched today will help to identify the key priorities for the Green Triangle Regional Forestry Hub. “The assessments that come out of the Forestry Hub will provide the industry with data not currently available, which will then assist in removing barriers affecting the productivity and efficiency of the sector. “This in turn will lead to more investment and create jobs, which is great news for the region and the

regional economy.” Mr Pasin said the Australian Government was providing $1.1 million to support the work of the Green Triangle Regional Forestry Hub. “With 329,000 hectares in total plantation area and a forestry workforce of more than 2,300 people, the Green Triangle’s contribution to Australian forestry is significant,” Mr Pasin said. “Local communities, growers, processors, transport and training providers—and the Forest Industry Advisory Council of South Australia— will be working together on the issues and opportunities for forestry in our region. “The result will be better returns to business, more investment, and greater economic security to major timber processing communities in my electorate like Mount Gambier, Tarpeena and Millicent.” Left (from left) - Green Triangle Forest Products managing director Laurie Hein; NF McDonnell & Sons’ Ian McDonnell, who is also vice chair of the Green Triangle Forestry Hub; OneFortyOne’s Linda Sewell, who is also chair of the Greent Triangle Forestry Hub; Timberlink CEO Ian Tyson; Member for Barker Tony Pasin & Australian Bluegum Plantations CEO Russ Hughes.

BREAST CANCER GROUP MARKS 20TH ANNIVERSARY It was in 2000 that Leanne Kosch and Kay Holloway hosted the first Breast Cancer Luncheon in Mount Gambier and at the end of last month, what became the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group celebrated 20 years of providing support, raising awareness and fundraising with an afternoon tea honouring past and present committee members and community groups and individuals that have contributed to the work of the group. Evan Kosch, who has hosted Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness

Group events at the Commodore on the Park, for the past two decades said the day was about sharing memories. “In the early days it was pretty tough for us all,” Evan said. But he knows Leanne, who lost her battle with breast cancer in May 2001, would be proud of what the group has become and how long it has continued the work she began. “We just had to knuckle down and do it and here we are 20 years later,” Evan said. Group member Jill Gilmore said the group saw the 20th anniversary as the perfect opportunity to pass on their gratitude to a generous community.

“Our community is extremely generous and gives lots and lots to different organisations,” Jill said. “We are a group of women who didn’t know each other but became close working for the same cause.” And the Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group has been the benefactor of that community generosity meaning programs such as the Helping Hand Bag Project and their more recent work in the lymphedema space, as well as fundraising to refurbish Adelaide accommodation for local patients and upgrading of chemotherapy facilities at local hospitals. One of the group’s members from the early years, Lynette Hirth, also spoke at the event, on behalf of herself and Kaye Chalk, covering the first decade of the hard working group. “When you’ve been touched by cancer you are given so much encouragement from people from the community, from friends and health care providers that you do want to give back,” Lynette said. She fondly remembered that inaugural lunch – its success all but forcing the group to form and to make the luncheon an annual event. Hosted by former ABC presented Stan Thomson and boasting guest speakers the calibre of Amanda Vanstone, Dorinda Haffner, Natasha Stott Despoja and Michael Angelakis, that first decade saw the luncheon raise around $14,000 each year. “We just wanted people to be aware of breast cancer and it was such a growing disease amongst our community,” Lynette said. “We were always blown away by the generosity of the Mount Gambier, Millicent and Tantanoola communities – they were so good to us in helping raise these amounts. We were very proud and humble to have raised the money we did.” Lynette and Kaye Chalk stepped away from the group, believing it was time for fresh blood and new ideas

and the luncheon has since become the now, always sold out, Pink Party – a cocktail event, still hosted at the Commodore on the Park. This year’s event is on October 25. Long time supporter of the group and best friend of co-founder Leanne Kosch, Wendy Richardson marked the 20th anniversary with some wonderful anecdotes and a $200 donation. Maria Knightly is another long serving committee member with the group, who has been the driving force behind the Helping Hand Bag Project, arguably the project most local breast cancer patients are familiar with and see as a genuine life saver for patients and their families. Instigated in 2012, the bags were originally valued at $300 each but through hard work and continued fundraising, the group now provides $600 worth of fuel vouchers, food vouchers, massage vouchers and other helpful boosts for patients with 233 bags having been handed out to this point. The Laura Thomas created calendar was one of the fundraising efforts that enabled the group to up the ante with the Helping Hand Bags project. Providing lymphedema treatment in Mount Gambier, thanks to Therapy for Life physiotherapist Shelley Blachut, has been the most recent project for the

ACROBATICS IS ALL ABOUT FUN & FITNESS Last year, Mount Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio celebrated 30 years, but at the end of last month, it was its newest classes that were in the spotlight – acrobatics – acro to those at the coalface of the popular addition to the MJ program. While the Mid South East footballers and netballers were fighting it out for the 2019 silverware, MJ Dance ran two days of acro workshops with Level 10 gymnast Kim Rickett. Kim, originally from the United States, is an acrobatics and tumbling instructor at Just Acrobatics, a Sunshine Coast based operation, highly respected in the acrobatics field and the group with which MJ’s acro program has been closely aligned since being established six years ago. “I have 22 years of gymnastics, power tumbling and coaching experience,” Kim said. “I was introduced to the sport of gymnastics at the age of 12, and fell head over heels in love with it. To this day, that is still the case. I am very passionate about teaching, and absolutely love what I do.” And that passion translated as Kim worked across all ages and levels of experience over the two days of workshops in Mount Gambier, with the workshops as much for MJ’s instructors to brush up on tips and techniques, as it was for the kids, to learn new skills and

pick up tips from one of the industry’s best. Kim is a State, regional and nationally awarded Level 8, 9, 10 gymnast, at 1997 Junior Olympic National Team qualifier, a State, regional and nationally awarded Level 7, 8, 9, 10 Elite power tumbler & trampolinist and she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Utah. MJ Dance Studio director Maria Slape said Just Acrobatics had been involved in the Mount Gambier studio’s acro program since its establishment. “They basically set it up and have continued to support us ever since,” Maria said. “It is great to be able to send teaches away to get training but it is even better to have them here and being hands on. It is our way of making sure we keep up with current training trends and making sure we are getting it right. And you can always pick up tips from teachers like Kim as to how to teach our own kids.” MJ Dance’s acro program boasts around 120 students. “It is a big part of the studio and the kids absolutely love it,” Maria said. “That’s why we have invested in so much new equipment when we moved to this new space and why we have a dedicated room for the acro program.”

As with all other areas of the MJ Dance Studio class schedule, acro has a performance team. They auditioned for Australia’s Got Talent this year and are heading to Adelaide for a competition this week. “It is a fun oriented class but we do still give that opportunity to perform,” Maria said. MJ currently has three acro instructors, as well as a swag of assistants, with Chrissy Jenkin heading up the popular program. Left - Kim working with the beginner students at MJ Dance Studio. RADIO CAMPAIGN EARNS WINDFALL FOR KIDS FREE GREEN WASTE DISPOSAL Southern Cross Austereo’s annual Give Me 5 for Kids fundraiser launched in June this year, with 963 Triple M aiming to make it the most successful year yet, and more than $20,000 was raised for the Millicent, Mount Gambier and Naracoorte Hospitals. In its 25th year, Give Me 5 for Kids raised more than $28.5 million for paediatric wards of local hospitals and children’s health-related charities across SCA’s 38 regional markets. This year Give Me 5 for Kids was supported by our 2019 ambassadors, TV & media personality Shelley Craft, NRL Manly Sea Eagles player Trent Hodkinson and social media influencer Kat Springer, aka The Organised Housewife. From the support and generosity of the Limestone Coast Community, Limestone Coast Triple M managed to raise an amazing $20,722.10. Limestone Coasts Triple M’s general manager Patrick O’Donnell said Triple M was proud to be involved in Give Me Five for Kids. “With all the money raised going directly to the children’s wards of our local hospitals, we have raised over $290,000 over the last thirteen years, and we couldn’t have done it without the generous support of the Limestone Coast community,” he said.

With an action-packed calendar of events including a disco, race day, outside broadcasts and much more, the Limestone Coast Triple M team encouraged the local community to get involved and dig deep. Give Me 5 for Kids director and Southern Cross Austereo chief operating officer John Kelly said they were delighted and humbled by the incredible community support they had received yet again for the Give Me Five for Kids fundraising initiative. “I would like to thank all those people who over many years have given their time and their money to contribute to the extraordinary ongoing success of Give Me 5 for Kids,” he said.

Once again, Wattle Range Council is making it easier for residents to clean up their gardens ahead of this year’s fire danger season by offering free green waste disposal at the waste transfer facilities over the next couple of months. Residents and ratepayers will be able to dispose of domestic green waste without using a waste voucher at Millicent, Penola and Beachport waste facilities between October 1 and November 30. “Council has found this initiative to be effective in helping the community to reduce the fuel load across our townships in the lead up to the fire season,” Wattle Range CEO Ben Gower

HOMELESSNESS LUNCHEON RETURNS A renowned South Australian business leader and internationally recognised poet will feature at the biennial Support Homeless People Luncheon on April 3, 2020, at The Barn Palais. The event has become a key feature on the region’s social calendar as the Limestone Coast’s preeminent charity business luncheon, raising more than $335,000 since 2012 to support regional agency ac.care’s work. Next year’s event will likely sell out quickly with prominent speakers and the opportunity to network with businesspeople from across the region, Adelaide and interstate. Melanie Cooper AM will be the luncheon’s first female keynote speaker,

joined by the event’s first interstate emcee - Rupert McCall OAM. Ms Cooper became the first female director in the history of Coopers in 2009. She has been Governor of the Coopers Brewery Foundation since its inception in 2006 and replaced Dr Tim Cooper as chair in 2011. She has held many board positions, including with Burnside Hospital Foundation and the Neurosurgical Research Foundation. “Coopers Brewery has been supporting the luncheon since its inception in 2012,” she said. “I look forward to sharing my experiences in businesses and foundations that support communities. “At Coopers Brewery we work with passion, respect, responsibility, consistency and service and I look forward to meeting like-minded business professionals in the Limestone Coast who share these values that drive their business’ success.” Meanwhile, Mr McCall has built a reputation internationally, delivering tributes at Ground Zero for the New York Fire Department on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, on the shores of Gallipoli and as an orator in honour of legends such as Roger Federer, Rod Laver, Don Bradman, Dawn Fraser and Greg Norman. Mr McCall has hosted and spoken at various high-profile functions, including Allan Border Medal and AFL Hall of Fame dinners, Olympic receptions,

racing occasions from Flemington to Birdsville and Test Match Rugby functions to deliver touching and compelling tributes, with a passion for sport as a commentator and poet. “I have done some work with people experiencing homelessness in Brisbane in recent years ... so I have a great appreciation for the difference the Limestone Coast business community has been making with the Support Homeless People Luncheon,” he said. “My intention is always to deliver a message that inspires and leaves people feeling good about themselves and I look forward to doing this for the generous business community of Mount Gambier.” Founded in Mount Gambier in the 1980s, ac.care has grown into a diverse agency with various areas of service delivery, from homelessness programs to foster care and adult education, with a focus on country people helping

country people. “The funds raised through the luncheon have remained in our community, supporting the work of ac.care to help more than 1147 local people, including children, with a focus on preventing homelessness and helping people secure safe and stable accommodation,” Support Homeless People Luncheon chairman Barry Stafford said. “However, the event is not just important as a fundraiser, but to raise awareness of how people can become homeless, highlight support services that are available give local business people the opportunity to get involved and make a difference.” Mr Stafford said the event also provided an opportunity for people in business to learn and be inspired through high profile speakers. “The event regularly sells out and I know people look forward to the opportunity to take part in the luncheon, connect with other business people and contribute to this important cause, which was initiated by the late Barry Maney and continues his legacy,” Mr Stafford said. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Barry Stafford at Barry Maney Group on (08)8721 3400. Left - Melanie Cooper AM Above - Rupert McCall OAM

TOY RUN LOOKING FOR DONATIONS

SHOWCASING THE LIFE OF A TRUE MASTER Pablo Picasso is considered one of the greatest and most prolific artists of all time. Many films have dealt with his later years – the art, the affairs and the wide circle of friends. But where did all this begin? What made Picasso in the first place? Young Picasso, which is part of Country Arts SA’s Arts on Screen program, looks at his early years; the upbringing and the learning that lead to his extraordinary achievements. It visits three cities that played key roles, Malaga, Barcelona and Paris and explores their influence on the artist, focusing on his specific artworks from these early years. The film is screening at Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on Thursday, October 10, at 7pm.

Hundreds of motorcycles and vehicles are expected to take part in this year’s Toy Run, which will take place on Saturday, November 30. Baptist Care SA will run the popular community event, which delivers Christmas gifts to children of families in need throughout the region. As part of the festivities, a cavalcade of motorcycles and vehicles will travel through the streets of Mount Gambier, before gathering in the Railway Lands where the festivities will take place. The family friendly event will include the opportunity to view the vehicles and enjoy live music, dancing, food and much more. “There’s been incredible support

from the community – with businesses, private donors and volunteers putting their hand up to be involved in this fantastic event,” said Baptist Care SA Case Manager, Jeremy Young. Last year more than 1000 disadvantaged children and young people received a special gift through the Toy Run. If your school or support agency would like to register children for gifts, please contact John Merrett on jmerrett@baptistcaresa.org.au. THE SEASON IS NEVER OVER! While the AFL grand final has only just been won and done there is no rest for the 18 clubs with what looks like a very busy trade period about to open up. All eyes will be on the likes of Tim Kelly and Joe Daniher with strong rumours that they will seek a change of destination. These days it doesn’t even seem to matter if the player is a free agent or not with plenty of talk about possible movement among contracted players

HAVING A BALL IN AUSTRALIA American basketballer LaMelo Ball, 17, made the decision to skip college basketball and instead play with the Illawarra Hawks in the NBL this season. Early scouting reports suggest he might have pulled the right reign with at least one scout believing Ball is a very real contender for the No.1 overall pick at the 2020 NBA draft. Will be interseting to see if more American high school basketballers choose Australia over the college system as the better path to the NBA in the future.

Junior Men Grand Final Cougars White 44 def Roos Red 19 Friends and family came out in full force, as they do each week in support of the Thursday night junior men’s program. Both teams shook off the nerves during warm ups and stepped on to the court with a look of focus in their eyes. Roos struck first on the back of a Sam Potts field goal much to the delight of his Roos teammates and fans. Cougars coach Gavin Male had his team well drilled and they responded well to all of Roos early moves and opened up a nine point first quarter lead. Cougar Kane Downie was everywhere during the contest but most importantly he was putting points on the board leading his side and all scorers with 25 points from the inside and out. Roos were

valiant but had no answers as the Cougars cruised to a 44 to 19 victory. An emotional and proud Gavin Male announced to his team that he would be stepping down as head coach, a great way for someone who has given so much of his time to go out on top. U12 Boys and U14 boys Gold were next, the U12 Blue division Warriors managed a three point win over the Phoenix In front of packed stands on court 2, the high scoring Hunters were too much for the Braves in the U12 Boys Gold division. In one of the games of the day a Harry Wright put back on the buzzer gave his Kings a two point victory over the Jets in the U14 Boys game. cont. opp. page

The Under 12 Girls took the court next and it was the Diamonds proving too strong for the Spirit. The U16 boys and girls games were the first ‘club’ basketball action of the day. U16 Girls saw Panthers facing off with Cougars, Panthers winning by 12 points, with Alyssa Duncan of the Panthers (29 points) and Sarah Ritter of the Cougars (27 points) starring for their respective teams. Panthers would also win the U16 boys Division 1, with

a five point victory over the Bulldogs. Jake Walker of the Panthers leading his team with 19 points. The U16 D2 boys Panthers and Roos would play Infront of a packed and vocal court three, Panthers were too much for the Roos with a comfortable 13 point win. To finish the day the U18 Men Panthers versus Bulldogs would provide the game of the day, an over time classic that Panthers would take by six points. Oli Thomson, of Panthers, led all scorers with 22 points. Individual awards were also part of the day U16 girls MVP went to Sarah Ritter, of Cougars, who is a promising junior that has recently represented SA Country, U16 boys MVP was Panther player Jake Walker, another recent SA Country representative. TIME TO APPLY FOR SPORTING ACADEMY POSITIONS

2012 TOYOTA HILUX SR 3.0L TURBO DIESEL, AUTO, 1 OWNER, CRUISE

Applications for the Limestone Coast Regional Sporting Academy, now in its third year, are now open. After securing funding from the State Government and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association, the program will expand from its current intake of 42 athletes to 80 for 2019/20. This will include a skill-based hockey program, an athletics development program, a SASI cycling program, a tennis program and the continuation of the current Lonestar program. TheaAcademy formed vital partnerships with the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) Cycling program and Tennis SA, as well as local Foundation, Four Reasons Why, this year. These partnerships will add a new element to the program as it continues to expand and ensure it offers local athletes with the best programs to support their sporting goals. Uni SA will continue to provide testing at its High Performance Centre for all the athletes. These tests will give athletes the chance to see where they sit physically against elite athletes in their chosen sports. With the test results, academy strength and conditioning coordinator Tony Checker will be able to provide strength and conditioning programs that work towards building the athletes body in preparation for a career in elite sport. The academy will also provide education sessions covering sports nutrition, sports psychology, media training, goal setting, time nanagement, athletic performance development, drugs in sport and career and education outside of sport. SASI will work with local coach Mark Wight and provide up to 15 athletes with a skills-based track cycling program that is also run in Adelaide for its elite cyclists. The Tennis SA program will provide tennis specific skill sessions to 16 selected athletes, in the 13 and Under age group from across the Limestone Coast and this will form the pathway for selection in Tennis SA’s Foundation Cup. The Lonestar Program will provide up to 30 athletes with a strength and conditioning program as well as the education sessions. The partnership with Four Reasons Why means the academy is offering five free scholarships into any of the academy programs to teenagers who are considered at risk or are financially unable to cover the costs due to family circumstances. All 80 athletes will have access to a 12-month gym membership, the high-level testing with Uni SA, strength and conditioning programs, education sessions, a uniform and a chance to further their sporting careers. Young athletes between the ages of 13-19 are encouraged to apply, whatever sport they are in or wherever they live across the Limestone Coast. Applications re now open and close on the October 31.
