COVER - THE SEARCH IS ON FOR STALLHOLDERS
It has been running for 25 years and has put almost three quarters of a million dollars back into the community. The Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Community Market, which has been running behind Harvey Norman since its inception, is on the lookout for stallholders, offering the comfort of an indoor stall or the outdoor option, as it looks to boost just what is on offer at the iconic Saturday morning market. From fresh fruit and vegetables to homemade baked goods, from preloved clothes to a second hand book stall, from hand crafted bath products to a range of plants, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Community Market has a wide array of products on offer and is looking for even more. There is also a canteen offering plenty of popular winter warmers,
including soup and chips, at this time of year, with entertainment all part of the market experience. Market stalwart Willem Moors said the market was all about the local club being able to give back to the community. “The book stall and the pre-loved goods stall are run by Rotary and provide us with the income we need to be able to give generously back to the community,” he said. The club also has a couple of stallholders who give all their proceeds to charity – one directing funds to the Prostate Cancer Group and another for the visually impaired – and Rotary, in turn, gives their stallholders fee to the charity of choice as well. In a bid to inject more vibrancy into the well appointed community market, Rotary is on the lookout for new
stallholders to take their place. “It is a great place for people to test the waters if they are looking to set up a new business and we have had many stallholders in the last 25 years go on to start their own business after starting out as a stall at the market,” Mr Moors said. There is always on onsite barbecue and the market operates from 8am12.30pm every Saturday. Anyone interested in becoming a stallholder should contact market manager Bruce on 0447 517 426. CHANGE TO SWIM SEASON The 2019/2020 Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre swimming season will end one month earlier than usual to enable development work associated with the Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub and the 50 metre outdoor pool refurbishment to proceed. The Aquatic Centre located on Margaret Street will close on February 29 next year and the Olympic swimming pool will remain closed for the 2020/2021 season until the hub project is completed in late 2021. The seasonal public swimming pool precinct is owned by City of Mount Gambier and managed by Innovative Leisure Management Director Peter Collins. The centre usually opens during the warmer months from October through until April each year. “Council understands that the early closure of the Aquatic Centre in 2020 and no access to the pool for the 2020/2021 season will be an inconvenience to the community,” Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin
said. “The new facility will be worth the wait and will provide indoor climate controlled aquatics facilities accessible to the public all year round.” In a separate project announced last month, council will refurbish the existing 50 metre pool to ensure it is compliant with contemporary standards at the same time as the hub is built. “The closure will also enable council to undertake the refurbishment simultaneously which will reduce disruption for residents in the long term and provide significant cost savings,” the Mayor said. The Aquatic Centre is currently used by individuals, children, families, schools and the Department for Education and Childhood Development (DECD) for swimming lessons, carnivals, early lap swimming, recreation, classes and competitive training sessions. Council is working with Innovative Leisure Management to manage the shortened upcoming season to create as little disruption as possible.
“In Term 4 this year, swimming lessons will be as normal and we are currently working through how to best deliver programming during Term 1 2020.” Mr Collins said. “We will keep schools and the public informed as decisions are made.” There will be no interruption to the normal course of business while the centre is open. All previous offerings will be available from October 14 this year to February 29.

Presented by the Riddoch Art Gallery, exclusively to South Australian audiences, Ancient Rome: The Empire that Shaped the World, is an award-winning exhibition, on display from August 17 - November 10. Ten students and two staff members from Tenison Woods College have headed to Timor-Leste for a 10 day mission to Hatloia – a neighbouring village to the village the college assisted in 2018, where a new school was constructed. Thanks to months of fundraising, including the major fundraiser, the recent annual Charity Ball for Year 11 and 12 students, the students will arrive bearing essential gifts for the villagers. Funds will also be gifted to the Dominican Orphanage in Dili, and, in particular, the kindergarten and primary school they manage. Timor-Leste coordinator Bernadette Fisher said in addition to the Charity Ball, the Timor-Leste group ran two school discos, with sales from tickets, bags of fruit, popcorn, glow stick necklaces and bracelets all going towards the trip. The team also sold soup and raffle tickets after special
buff, enjoy getting behind-the-scenes experience, love socialising, or are simply willing to lend a helping hand, then they want to hear from you. There are opportunities to help with ticketing, promotions, installation and exhibits - both throughout the exhibition and in the weeks leading up to the event. In return for your assistance, you’ll get an exclusive FREE guided tour of the exhibition, meet some amazing new people and have an absolute blast! If you’d like to volunteer, please email riddoch@mountgambier. sa.gov.au to request an Ancient Rome

concert goers, with last year’s event at St Helens, Tasmania attracting 20,000 people. The benefits from this event will be spread across the Limestone Coast. The Naracoorte Lucindale Council will enter into a partnership arrangement with triple j, with council supporting and funding the broader event costs and triple j bringing the entertainment and covering the production and broadcast costs. he concert is broadcast through triple j live on the day and is televised with heavy promotion of our area and community in the lead up. “We are very excited to have been selected to host the triple j One Night Stand,” Naracorote Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery said. “We’re looking forward to showing off the Naracoorte
Lucindale area to the rest of Australia and enjoying a boost to tourism and the local economy. This is an opportunity for our young people to experience a fantastic event which provides a platform to highlight the youth in our community. The immediate economic impact will be substantial, and will provide opportunities for locals to come together and celebrate everything great about our local community.” The Naracoorte Lucindale Council has been working with representatives from the Lucindale Lions Club, Lucindale Football Club, Lucindale Netball Club and the bid convenors to ensure the event is successful. One of the bid convenors Kate Rayner summed up the group’s excitement “How exciting! What an amazing experience to have this top music event in our town, of Lucindale! Thousands of people will be visiting our town and region, travelling from all parts of Australia. Last year in Tassie at St Helens, over 20,000 went. With the line up that has been announced we are expecting similar numbers. With our experience and community spirit Lucindale will put on a great event and we can’t wait to host the triple J One Night Stand 2019!”. The concert is being held at the Lucindale Oval with Yakka Park (the South East Field Days site) hosting a tent city and campsite. Pre-booking your campsite is a MUST at www. lucindaleons.com.au. Don’t turn up on Saturday morning and expect a campsite with concert views – that won’t happen and you may be left with nowhere to stay and very few alternative accommodation options. In this time, AXIS Employment has gone from strength to strength and is now firmly established in the community, also offering Disability Management Services and its ParentsNext Program. Regional manager Rod Versteegh said AXIS Employment opened its doors on February 3, 2013 and had built an impressive reputation for its dedicated service to both job seekers and the strong relationship it had also built with business. “For anyone looking for work our doors are always open,” Mr Versteegh said. “If you have a barrier to employment or a disability we would love to have you on board.” AXIS Employment has fostered strong working relationships with more than 200 businesses from Bordertown, Keith, Naracoorte, Mount Gambier, Robe, Beachport and Millicent and the Limestone Coast team is always looking to establish new relationships with emerging or established businesses across the region. “We are constantly meeting with business owners and managers through the marketing of our job seekers,” he said. “AXIS Employment understands how important and life changing it can be when they help job seekers
reach their goal of gaining open employment.” Whether through AXIS marketing, successful interview training or job seekers taking part in personal development opportunities, AXIS Employment prides itself on placing job seekers in positions that suit their skills, interests or past training or study that they may have previously undertaken. “It is not simply about getting the job,” Mr Versteegh said. “It is about focussing on the benefits and rewards that the job seekers of all ages and abilities gain from employment. Our results show that job seekers can establish themselves in employment and produce excellent results for their employer – and in turn, the employers have provided them with an opportunity to grow as people. Through our complete service, we have developed many long lasting and significant relationships with many businesses and this continues to thrive today.” The success of the six year old Limestone Coast services was built on more than two decades of outstanding results in regional Victoria with services in the Grampians district, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mildura and Swan Hill. Mr Versteegh said he was proud to be part of a successful organisation that had a clear focus on inspiring and empowering people through employment. “The results from the organisation
as a whole has been extremely encouraging and the South East has certainly provided the service AXIS Employment is know for,” he said. For job seekers, who have a disability, illness or injury, AXIS Employment is committed to ensuring you have every opportunity to thrive in a sustainable and rewarding job. A full house of 600 people packed The Barn last night to witness the 12th annual Swinging with the Stars at the end of last month. In a hotly contested final, Liz Rymill and Steven Speck, who won as a star in 2016, were crowned winners. Liz is well known throughout the Limestone Coast region through her work with the ABC South East and as a member of the Australian Skeet Shooting Team that recently competed in the Nationals in Wagga Wagga. “The whole experience has been overwhelmingly humbling and a joy to be a part of,” she said. “It was such a thrill to see everybody bring their own personality and style to the dance floor. I feel really thrilled and proud that from where we started, it is a testament to our teachers to get us through to the performance on Saturday night and I feel really proud of what we have all achieved. I am a huge believer in the capacity for country communities to pull together and really build on what we have. We are a proud bunch and it was a great opportunity to be in a room full of people that all believe in this. To play a small part in the Stand Like Stone legacy is a real privilege.” People’s Choice winner (awarded to the Star who raises the most funds for the Stand Like Stone Foundation) was awarded to Kate Perry, whose individual fundraising total was $15,287.20. Kate was overwhelmed by the local support in her fundraising endeavours. “I am very honoured to be part of such a great fundraiser for
the whole Limestone Coast region and I am absolutely blown away by the Penola and Coonawarra community,” Kate said. “Each year they get behind their local star and raise so much money! I have made life long friendships through this experience and feel humbled to be selected as the People’s Choice winner for 2019.” said Ms Perry. The 2019 event has raised $98,408, taking the total raised since the first Swinging with the Stars in 2007 to $715,981

For the second time in the past year Wattle Range Council has hosted a visit by the University of South Australia. This time third and fourth-year students studying Urban and Regional Planning, visited the Limestone Coast for three days. The students met with council’s CEO Ben Gower and key development services and economic development staff and were given a briefing on issues relevant to planning and development across the council area. Council staff then accompanied the students on a guided bus tour of the Wattle Range region providing a detailed examination of development issues and opportunities for the individual townships and their surrounding districts. This included a visit to Yallum Park, where owner Andy Clifford invited the students to look at new developments and the existing interior of the building, and was able to discuss first hand the implications of planning and development on a heritage listed site. Along with a discussion with Penola locals Councillor Rick Paltridge and Wendy Hollick, who outlined potential projects in the Penola region. “This council initiated relationship has resulted in lifestyle1.net | 10
three of the students coming back to us since the tour wanting to be involved in matters across the Council area. It was interesting to note that most students were not aware of existing gaps that exist within Local Government for planning staff,” Mr Gower said. “The main aim for this initiative is to reverse the trend of our younger residents leaving the region for the big smoke, and it is really pleasing to see some genuine interest in employment opportunities in our region.” Above - Part of the University of South Australia touring party at Yallum Park.

IS IT TIME FOR A NEW DISHWASHER?
MAKE YOUR LAUNDRY A SPACE YOU WANT TO VISIT It's time to give your laundry a little love and create a space you want to be in. We spend a lot of time in our laundries, and for most, it's not the most exciting room of the house. However, as an essential space in the home it is deserving of some attention. HOT TIPS: • Consider tiling - your laundry is a wet space so tiles are the ideal flooring but don't just shoose a tile you love, choose a tile that is easy to clean and keep clean. • Choose appliances first-This step is more important than you think. The size and functionality of your appliances will dictate the design of your cabinetry. There's nothing worse than trying to make something work in a space that simply wasn’t designed for it. Front loaders are cdertainly better aesthetically but are alsao space savers as they fit under benches.
• Ensure good ventilation - arguably the room in the house that needs ventiltion the most so a window is optimal if possible -an external door will also give good ventilation options. • Light it up - good light makes a room feel fresh and a dark laundry is even less motiviating than a dark laundry. Downlights, skylights or an external window will all do the job. • Don't skimp on appliances and tapware - no doubt you have a budget but these are not the areas to go cheap as that will only be short term gain for usually long term pain. • Remember to plan bench and storage space - the more storage space you have, the better. Things like washing powder and stain remover should be hidden away if possible.

What size dishwasher do I need? Most of us are looking at filling a dishwasher-shaped hole under our kitchen bench, which means we're looking for a full sized dishwasher – 60cm wide, 82–85cm tall and 60cm deep (with room at the back for ventilation). But if you have a compact kitchen then you might want to think about using a drawer, compact or slimline dishwasher that can fit neatly under a benchtop or in a smaller space. As the old adage says, measure twice and cut once – play it safe by measuring the space in your kitchen to make sure that shiny new dishwasher will fit before committing to a purchase. What type of dishwasher should I buy? There are several different dishwasher types or configurations available depending on your needs. Many dishwasher models also come in a variety of colours, finishes and configurations in order to match your kitchen decor. Freestanding dishwashers • These come with a worktop and are suitable if you do not have an under-bench space in your kitchen. Freestanding dishwashers can generally be built-in as well. Semi-integrated dishwashers • A built-in model which can fit a panel under the control fascia to match the rest of your kitchen cupboards. Fully integrated dishwashers • A completely built-in dishwasher, with the whole front panel matching your kitchen and controls concealed inside the door. You won't even be able to tell it's there. Built-in dishwashers • Designed to be mounted under your kitchen counter, built-in dishwashers do not require top or side panels but must be enclosed and anchored to prevent tipping forward during loading and unloading. Drawer or compact dishwashers • Ideal for smaller households, these dishwashers are built in to a drawer or microwave-sized space and take up less kitchen real estate, but also fit less crockery in each load. Slimline dishwashers • Just as tall as a full-sized dishwasher but around 45cm wide rather than the conventional 60cm. Benchtop dishwashers • Designed to sit on top of your bench or counter, benchtop dishwashers can be installed and removed without needing to modify your kitchen, so they're a good option if you're renting.

The Lower South East Hockey Association had a boys team participate in the Under 13 State Hockey championships at West Beach hockey fields returning home as runners-up. The team consisted of 14 players representing all Mount Gambier based clubs with five debutants at this representative level aunder the guidancde of coach Mick Carne. Over the three days of competition the boys played six minor round pool games, a semi-final and then the title decider. The opening game of the tournament LSE won 4-1 against Port Lincoln with captain Will Cameron scoring two goals and debutants Nash Lobley and Harrison DeGaris both scoring one each. The boys were keen to carry on the good start coming up against Sunraysia in the second game, where the team scored three goals in the first half and another three goals in the second. The midfield of DeGaris, another debutant Jeremy Mackenzie, Jack Sharman and Rhys Earle created drive and structure to gain advantage of the game and sent the ball into the forward 25 on many occasions finding Ethan Carne who scored one goal, Lobley with two, DeGaris with another goal, debutant Orlando Vause converted in the second half along with attacking midfielder Jack Sharman also finding the back board. The third game of the day saw a solid all round team effort with the midfield of Earle, Mackenzie, DeGaris and Pattrick Robinson controlling the middle and creating a number of opportunities for the forwards to put pressure on Forestville’s defence. Sharman scored in the first half and Carne sending two goals into the back of the net in the second half giving LSE the victory, 3-0. Sunday consisted of another three minor round pool games and an early morning start and dew on the grass the game wasn’t as free flowing as normal. The solid defence of Cameron, Robinson, Blake Vause, debutant Josh Younger, Jack Leishman and Patrick Langsmith as well as goal keeper Devlin Harpham, meant the LSE were able to stop a number of balls into the defensive circle conceding only one defensive short corner, despite being under lots of pressure. A long ball from Sharman from the midfield to Lobley saw LSE able to hold off to win 1-0. The following game was against Riverland with the majority of attacking done by LSE meaning there were plenty of opportunities to score. Sharman converted two goals and one apiece to Lobley and Carne as the team won 4-0. Game

six of the tournament was the toughest minor round game and it had a large impact on where the teams would finish in their pool. Adelaide Uni was a very good side and this was the first turf game for LSE as all previous games had been on grass so the style of play needed to change. This was the second real test for the backs for the tournament and Harpham, who only took up goal keeping 18 months ago, did a great job and was supported well by Langsmith, Leishman, Robinson, Vause, Cameron and Younger as a number of rotations happened to keep up with the pace of the game. At halftime LSE were up 2-1 thanks to Lobley and Carne converting through great team play and moving the ball in the circle. The second half again was played at pace with midfielders Earle, DeGaris, Mackenzie and Sharman holding strong but after conceding a short corner in defence, first runner Robinson was struck by the ball on his foot after a full blooded hit. Robinson had to go off and Adelaide Uni scored to tie 2-2 with fulltime whistle blown. With a draw to Adelaide Uni, LSE had secured top spot and the semi -final match was against the Upper South East. This was a great all-round team game with all players on the roster playing a good chunk of game time with plenty of rotations to keep players fresh as it was the fourth game of the day. Lobley finishing with three goals and the 3-0 scorecard saw LSE advance to the grand final. With a rematch of game six against Adelaide Uni coach Carne knew what to expect and put in plenty of homework. The game was played at the State’s premier hockey facility “The Pines”. Adelaide Uni dominated the midfield and put a massive amount of pressure on the defence for LSE. Adelaide Uni had all the attack with nine short corners in the first half and six short corners in the second half. LSE was unlucky with some long balls through to Carne and Lobley up forward but with limited balls finding their way through the midfield it was going to be hard to score. Debutant goal keeper Harpham was outstanding in stopping numerous numbers of balls coming towards goal. The defence stayed strong with Cameron, Robinson, Vause, Younger, Leishman and Langsmith all playing their best games of the tournament. With ten minutes to go in the game Adelaide Uni scored the winning goal with a bobbling ball during field play.

PIONEERS STILL ON TRACK FOR PLAY OFFS
MILLICENT HOSTS STATE EVENT
The start was shaky for the Mount Gambier Pioneers women and at quarter time they trailed by 12 points to Woodville Warriors. The home side managed only six points in a lacklustre opening but the girls were able to claw their way back in the second on some impressive perimeter shooting, with Pachis Roberts hitting two, Amanda Frost one and youngster Emily Dawe also hitting a shot from beyond the arc and by the main break the margin was only one in favour of the visitors. The 22-9 second quarter for the home side suggested they had found their mojo and were about to take control but the Warriors had other ideas and scores were locked away at the final change. Captain Frost hit 10 of her 21 points for the match in the third and thank goodness, given her side only managed 12 points in total. A somewhat unlikely hero emerged in the last with Maddy Wormald showcasing all her skills from attacking the basket to hitting a sweet shot from three point territory and her eight points for the match all came in this quarter. It was a critical win for the Pioneers women, who have two more home games against the competition’s top two teams – Sturt and Forestville before a final round bye. They now sit three wins clear of fifth ranked West Adelaide so would dearly love to take the points in at least one of the remaining matches to ensure they are play-off bound.
The Millicent & District Darts Association hosted the 2019 South Australian Country Championships at the Civic and Arts Center, with around 150 people converging on the town to support the competitors at thre annual event. The host association has a competitive weekend but had to settle for 11th in the 12 team competition that saw players from Port Augusta, Kadina, Jamestown, Barossa, Riverland, Claire, Murray Bridge, Mount Gambier, Port Pirie, Whyalla and Torrens Valley competing. Port Pirie, who will host the 50th anniversary championships next year, again proved too strong and took the State title. There was cause for celebration for the Millicent hosts though with stalwart Dean Wilkes who has been competing for more than 20 years at the State Championships, one of three South Australian
based players to be awarded life membership of the State governing body, along with Mount Gambier’s Mick Williams and Murray Bridge’s Sharon Donhardt. Mount Gambier’s Danny Scally also had a good tournament finishing runner up in the Singles Championship. The Millicent & District Darts Association representative team were Jules Taylor, Dean Wilkes, Phil Todd, Paul Joiner, Hayden Joiner, Corey Wagner and Shane Ash, with team manger Paul McRostie and statistician Jane Ash. The hard work of a dedicated band of volunteers and the generous support of sponsors enabled the event to be a success. Above (left) - The Millicent & District Darts Association team. The Men had a much easier time of things, again easily topping the 100 point barrier to secure a 46 point victory and elevating to top spot on the Premier League standings. The home side led by 15 at the first break, 25 by half time, 42 at the final change and that final 118-72 scoreline. Skipper Tom Daly had a game high 29 points, which included an incredible six from eight from three point territory, with Dayjar Dickson hitting 24 points and pulling in 12 rebounds. Kentrell Barkley
also pulled in 12 rebounds and scored 21 points, while Erik Burdon hit his 12 points all from beyond the arc. Sam Daly (nine points) and Lachie Hunter (11 points and six rebounds) also again showed their worth and the depth in the playing roster that sees the men’s team play-off bound. Their run home is a mixed bag with Sturt sitting 10th but with a stronger roster than the last time the teams faced off, and then second ranked Forestville. Tip off for the clash with Sturt this Saturday night at the Icehouse is 6.30pm for the women and 8.15pm for the men. Above - A strong last quarter from Maddy Wormald helped lead the Pioneers women to a critical win.
