COVER - TAKING THE FARMERS MARKET TO THE NEXT LEVEL
WANTED The Mount Gambier Farmers Market is developing a plan to take the market to the next level. Imagine Mount Gambier’s beautiful Cave Gardens and library precinct developing into a large vibrant community and market hub every Saturday morning. That is why the Mount Gambier Farmers Market is looking for potential stall holders and other interested community members to help make this happen. Established six years ago, the Mount Gambier Farmers Market runs from 9am12noon every Saturday of the year in Mount Gambier’s Cave Garden adjacent the Mount Gambier Library. It offers a variety of local produce, from eggs, fish and organically grown apples to vegetables and home baked goods. The Farmers Market allows customers a chance to source locally grown and produced food and just as importantly, allows artisan producers a chance to showcase their wares, test the waters

and dip their toe into setting up a small business without the overheads and with a captive audience. The Mount Gambier Farmers Market is set to hold a community meeting sooner rather than later as it looks to attract more of those stallholders - from backyard vegie growers to talented cooks, from those on the land with excess produce or someone looking to showcase a time honoured family recipe with the rest of the community. Watch this space for more details on the Farmers Market think tank. The organising committee wants to make the Farmers Market a must visit attraction in the city, taking advantage of its prime, central location, and wants to ensure visitors to the market have the largest selection possible of produce on offer. “We want to make it a larger, more vibrant market and that definitely means more stallholders,” stallholder and committee member Michelle McColl said. “The market is a great business
incubator to test the waters, to test out new ideas and to test your product in the marketplace without worrying about infrastructure and other overheads while you are getting started.” The Mount Gambier Farmers Market also has special market days with cooking demonstrations from guest chefs, as well as entertainment from local musicians. Anyone interested in attending the community meeting, whether as an interested stallholder or just someone with ideas about developing the market, or anyone finding out more about becoming part of the Mount Gambier Farmers Market should contact Josh Praolini on 0418 680 527, email info@ mgfm.org.au or head to the website or facebook page for more information.

FREE DISABILITY SERVICES DROP-IN CAFÉ FOOD & MUSIC EVENT SET TO CELEBRATE IN MOUNT GAMBIER COMMUNITY’S CULTURAL DIVERSITY The Disability Workforce Hub (DWFH) is hosting an NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) Café at the Mount Gambier City Hall this Thursday from 10-2pm. People with a disability and their carers are invited to come along and catch up with local disability service providers about what services they can access. “The NDIS Café will be set up as a relaxed event whereby everyone can come along at their own leisure, enjoy a chat and free morning tea and hopefully make some new connections with local service providers,” said DWFH coordinator Melissa Hunter. “It’s an opportunity to find out what services these providers offer and perhaps how you can tailor their supports for your own needs”. People looking for work, wanting to get back into the workforce or looking for a career change are also encouraged to come along on the day. “The disability sector offers a variety of rewarding roles, and there are many employment opportunities available all across the Limestone Coast,” Ms Hunter said “Many of the service providers attending are interested in joining forces to promote employment opportunities and their services in the region, so if you’re looking for work in the disability sector come and find out about the opportunities available.” If you have a disability or health/ injury related barrier to obtaining work, a number of disability employment
services are also attending. They will be able to talk to you about the support they can provide in connecting you with employers. On the day there will be representatives from the following organisations: Disability Workforce Hub, WDEA, Cara, Miroma, Comrec, Mission Australia, Carers SA, Skylight, Axis Employment, Job Prospects, Baptist Care, Boandik, People First Community Care, Homecare +, Limestone Coast Volunteer Service, Country Health Connect, Community Living Australia, Total Therapy Solutions, Limestone Coast Training. Event information can be found on the RDALC facebook page (@ rdalimestonecoast) or by contacting Melissa Hunter on (08)8723 1057.
When Father Dean Marin looks out over his St Paul’s Catholic Church congregation there is a marked difference to as recently as a decade ago – there is now a melting pot of cultures with new arrivals from across the globe including India. the Congo, the Philippines, Malaysia, as well as second and third generation European migrants from Greece, Italy, Poland and Croatia. It got the Parish Council thinking and in conjunction with the newly formed hospitality committee, the church is set to host a multicultural lunch on Sunday, July 7, following 11am mass. “As a community we can see that Mount Gambier has become a very multicultural community and there are a lot of people who have come from
different countries in recent years,” Fr Dean said. “We are seeing that in our Catholic community as well and we realise that we have to do more to make people feel welcome and like they belong. We want to get to know people and their stories.” The lunch is one step in that process but so is another church project, where a large map of the globe and Australia have been placed in the church entrance, and parishioners are being encouraged to add a sticker to their country of origin, or where their family originates, and then on a small index card briefly tell their story. “We felt it was a chance to see the representation within our Catholic community of different cultures and the small cards give people a chance to share some of their story, when they came here, why and perhaps what they have left behind,” Fr Dean said. Sharing more of that story will be possible at the July 7 lunch, where a variety of cuisines will be on offer, as well as traditional music and dance. “People are also being encouraged to come in national dress,” Fr Dean said. “We want this to be an all encompassing event which looks at the newer cultures as well as the next generation of migrant families that made this their home in the 1950s and 1960s – it is definitely going to be a bit of everything.” There will be a fashion parade of national dress, a dance performance from the Karenni community, Fillipino performers, an Italian song from Tenison Woods College students, Indian performers and a Chinese song is also in the works and that’s just for starters. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - NO THANKS… By ROBBIE TANSEL I’ve been talking with a friend over the last few weeks who is trying to find a new partner. Her experiences leave me feeling so thankful that I managed to fool Donna into thinking sticking with me was a good idea all those years ago. Or vice versa. I really can’t remember how it actually happened. There is no way you’d want to be in the dating game today. For starters, you’d have to call it dating which annoys me because it’s such an American term. I thought we called it “going out” in Australia. I object to the young people deciding that we’re calling it dating now. That’d be enough to have me decide to stay single straight away. The next problem my friend has
highlighted for me is how do you actually find someone these days? Where do you find a partner? People essentially don’t exist in the real, physical world anymore. Everything is cyber and digital. If I live my life online when do I encounter a prospective partner? If I do my shopping online, if I order my meals to be delivered to me online, if I purchase my clothes via an internet site, then how do I meet a partner? Unless the postie delivering my online purchases is a bit of a good sort, I’m going to be alone for life because I don’t encounter other humans. Some of you people who live in the online world are probably already yelling at your computers, “The way you meet people is online dating, you imbecile!” Let me just say, the fact you’re talking to your computer is a big part of the problem. Get out and talk to a real person. And I thought we’d already discussed that “dating” was not how we talk about going out with someone in Australia.
Online dating you say? I can’t tell you how thankful I am that I’m not having to operate in that world. For starters, I’m not creative enough to come up with a profile that would make me sound appealing. “I’m a middle aged guy carrying a bit too much weight. My hair is thinning. I’m always tired. My kids are feral. I have no particular skills or talents, or redeeming features of any kind, to be honest. I’m gassy due to a shocking diet. I’m really pretty desperate and looking for a woman with low expectations and flexible morals. I don’t like travelling and hate the beach.” Has there actually ever been an online dating profile written which doesn’t indicate the person loves travelling? I hate travelling. I’d rather never leave my house. You have to be really good at lying to do the online dating. Lying might be too strong a word. It’s probably more about being very selective about which parts of the truth you want to present.
Leave out the bits and pieces that you know will have someone deciding you’re not worth sending a smile or swiping right or whatever it is you do to indicate someone is the love of your life based on the fact you’ve seen two pictures and read five carefully selected facts about them. I’m pretty sure that I’d look at women’s profiles and just decide they’re all too good for me and that they deserve someone better. I’d be too concerned with disappointing them before even making contact. I’m so considerate that I’d be worried about wasting their time. Another thing that concerns me about the online dating world is the part where you have to get to know them online. Unless you look really good in photos, you’re now relying on impressing the person with your written expression. I’m looking for love and instead I’m undertaking a cross between a written comprehension activity and a piece of persuasive writing. I thought I was trying to hook up and instead I’m in an English lesson. Instead of trying to come up with something charming to say I’m worried about my spelling, grammar and sentence structure. As if that’s not bad enough, if
we’re communicating online there’s the distinct possibility that there may be some use of emojis by the young lady, or there might be a time I feel the need to use an emoji. I’m no better with emojis than I am with written expression. There are so many of those little pictures; I never know which one to pick, partly because I don’t really understand what half of them mean. The chocolate icecream one is pretty obvious but after that I don’t know what to do. Would this be a good time to put the carousel horse emoji in? Maybe a 3 ½ inch floppy disc? It would be so much better if there was a 5 ¼ inch disc emoji, if you get what I mean. I’m sure some of the emojis have never been used. The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that the modern dating game is the perfect answer to the issues of global population control. It’s going to be too hard to meet a partner and procreate, so the world’s population will naturally decrease. If you’d like to go back to the old way of meeting someone by getting really drunk and getting a nasty surprise in the morning, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com
LIBRARY FUNDRAISER The Friends of the Mount Gambier Library are a volunteer committee that raises money for programs and resources that are beyond the usual library budget. Recently funds from the Friends have enabled the purchase of a ScanNcut machine for the Library Maker Space and ukuleles for the new Sunday learn to play the ukulele group. The next major fundraiser is the Big Book Sale. This will be held on Saturday, lifestyle1.net | 06

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR MENTAL HEALTH Sometimes all you need is someone to talk to, to spend time with, while keeping it casual and relaxed. That’s what Skylight Country Wellness Connections (CWC) offers people with mental health challenges in the Limestone Coast. Funded by Country SA Primary Health Network (CSAPHN) until 2021, Skylight – previously MIFSA – offers both group and individual services within this newly established program. The groups are all about building connections and engaging in enjoyable and meaningful activity in a supportive environment. Currently, both Limestone Coast Skylight groups are held at Mount Gambier’s St Paul’s Hall, on Penola Road. Skylight staff respond to the interests and needs of the people
attending and at this stage the Wednesday session focusses on board games, cards, puzzles and chess, while on Friday participants of the program can enjoy art, music and cooking. Plans are underway for a group in Millicent. Skylight’s CWC coordinator Harry van Eyk said they started up in Mount Gambier because it was the biggest population base and it was a good way to see what kind of demand and uptake there would be. “It is also where Skylight has offered mental health support services for 11 years,” he said. “It is about reaching people with mental health issues that are often stuck in their homes and inviting them to get out and about and in a supportive environment. It’s about making connections, building new friendships and finding support. It is not therapy.”
Harry also spoke about the individual support that is available through CWC. “Skylight’s CWC offers extra support to people who find that life gets hard and there are barriers to shopping or there are challenges to family cohesion or managing finances,” Harry said. “We can help people get back on track. Individual support is also available to support people to initially access social activities and our groups.” Harry said that the program is aimed at people who do not necessarily fit neatly into any of the other funding boxes and programs to make sure no one is falling through the cracks. While Skylight continues to develop its NDIS services, the CWC invites those not yet with an NDIS package to participate. Skylight staff will offer support to access the scheme if appropriate. The groups have been up and running since January and Skylight wants to raise awareness of what they have to offer in terms of relaxed group environments and individual support. The Skylight CWC team comprises a team of five staff, and links with Skylight’s other services, which have operated in the Limestone Coast for 11 years. To find out more about Skylight and its Country Wellness Connections programs, contact Harry on 0406 229 648.

She grew up in Tantanoola, was educated at Millicent High School, plied her trade at the South Eastern Times, had a sting in public relations for O2 Media and is now an officially become a published author as she launches her debut rural romance Wildflower Ridge back where it all began. This Friday, at the Millicent Library, Maya Linnell, who now lives in Narrawong with her husband and three children, will unveil her debut novel, taking about her path to publication, the writing process and also answering any questions from the floor. Maya treated the writing process exactly like a more regimented job, forcing herself to write every day. “Even when I didn’t feel like it,” she said. “Nobody else is going to write 98,000 words into a story for me.” But the words are done and Maya Linnell is now officially an author. “I didn’t know anyone who had written a books becoming an author seemed a bit of a pie-in-the-sky childhood dream,” she said. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do straight out of high school, but travelling pointed me toward journalism, which led me to fiction writing.” Described as ‘rural fiction straight from the heart, Wildflower Ridge is a lifestyle1.net | 08
story centring on four sisters, one farm and a second chance at following your heart. The book has been praised by popular, well-credentialled rural romance writer Fleur McDonald who described Maya’s debut effort as “a moving tale of endings, new beginnings and love. A page turner’. Maya has already held author visits in Casterton, Portland, Mount Gambier, Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Hamilton but returning to her childhood home will arguably be the most special part of her book tour to date. Wildflower Ridge is now available in good book stores and online and tells the story of Penny McIntyre, who loves her life as an ambitious city professional, with a marketing team at her fingertips and a promotion just within reach. So when she’s floored by a mystery illness, and ordered back to the family farm for three months’ rest and recuperation,
she is horrified to find her perfect life imploding. Within days, Penny has to leave her much-loved job, her live-in boyfriend, and her beloved city apartment to return to the small country town in which she grew up. That means back to her dad and three sisters, one of whom has never forgiven her for abandoning her family and to her ex-boyfriend, Tim Patterson, who was the biggest reason she ran away in the first place. When Penny’s father is injured in a farming accident and Tim campaigns to buy the property, she must choose between the city life she loves and the farming dream she buried long ago. The Millicent Library event on June 28 is at 6.30pm, call the library to reserve your place or for more details on (08)8733 0903.

Carpet cleaning professionals across Australia are joining forces to set a world record and they have two key motivators to get the job done. Firstly, they are raising funds for the Kids With cancer Foundation, setting a target of $10,000 for the one day event, and secondly, to raise awareness of the Australian standard for carpet cleaning and making sure consumers realise the standard they should expect from their local carpet cleaning professional. With that in mind, August 1 is the day the nation’s carpet cleaners will be looking to set the record and raise much needed funds to assist Australian families impacted by cancer. Cleaneasy Mount Gambier’s Matthew and Summa Tully have jumped on board the initiative and will be part of the world record attempt, which will be 11.30am on August 1, here in Mount Gambier. It will see them head to a home to clean their carpets, with this first three minutes of the cleaning, part of the world record attempt and therefore filmed.

ICONIC COLLECTION ON SHOW The Riddoch Art Gallery is the only South Australian venue to host Sidney Nolan’s iconic ‘Ned Kelly’ series which was officially opened by Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin on Friday. For the first time in 15 years, the National Gallery of Australia’s (NGA) collection of Sidney Nolan’s paintings is touring Australia. The tour gives people across the country the chance to experience some of the most famous and poignant masterpieces of 20th century Australian art. “The Ned Kelly legend is one of the most recognisable tales of our colonial history, and whether you think he is a hero or a villain, his story is a familiar one from children to grandparents. Ned Kelly’s story and Sidney Nolan’s telling of it, represents a cornerstone of Australian history, and we are excited to show it at the Riddoch Art Gallery,” Riddoch Art Gallery director and manager arts and culture development Dr Melentie Pandilovski said. While the Kelly paintings have been exhibited internationally at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, they have rarely visited the far corners of Australia. “Sidney Nolan’s 1946–47 paintings on the theme of the 19th-century bush ranger Ned Kelly are one of the greatest series of Australian paintings of the 20th century,” NGA director
Nick Mitzevich said. “Nolan’s starkly simplified depiction of Kelly in his homemade armour has become an iconic Australian image. In 1961, Sidney Nolan told the writer Colin MacInnes that the main ingredients of the ‘Kelly’ series were Kelly’s own words, Rousseau, and sunlight.” The NGA acquired its first Ned Kelly work from the series in 1972, Death of Sergeant Kennedy at Stringybark Creek 1946. In 1977, Sunday Reed donated to the NGA 25 of the 27 paintings from Nolan’s first exhibited Kelly series. Together, these 26 paintings provide a masterclass on Australian art history and the development of a new figuration and landscape painting in Australian art, with enamel-like surfaces on board. The travelling exhibition is supported by the Australian Government through Visions of Australia and the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program. The exhibition will be available to view at the Riddoch Art Gallery until Sunday, August 4.

MAKEOVER FOR POOL The City of Mount Gambier is set to refurbish the 50m outdoor pool at the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre to ensure it is compliant with contemporary standards and can provide an additional 15 years of use. The decision follows a report presented to a Special Council Meeting earlier this month, where a number of items relating to the Community and Recreation Hub project were considered. “The matters were addressed to provide certainty for the architects as they work towards finalising the detailed design of the hub,” City of Mount Gambier CEO Andrew Meddle said. “What has become clear upon further investigation is that without improvement works, the older pool will look very much the poor relation
to the Community and Recreation Hub and would not be compliant with contemporary standards.” Council endorsed a standalone project at an estimated cost of $1.735million to bring the pool up to modern standards and provide an additional 15 years of use. As part of the project the pool will be lined with a steel surface and an additional liner which will sit within the existing concrete shell, the pool deck will be lifted and the depth of the pool will be increased to enable diving for racing to occur at both ends, the pool will utilise the new heating, filtration and pump system proposed for the indoor facility, reducing maintenance, and works will enable the redeployment of the wood burner to an alternative site. Council’s CEO said undertaking the works in conjunction
TEST
with the development of the new hub will see a reduction in disruption for residents, cost savings from joining the works together and an improvement in the operating costs for the old pool. “The alternative would be to leave the community with an ageing facility, with limited accessibility and functionality and the knowledge that works would need to be undertaken at some stage in the future, causing further disruption and increased costs to retrofit a solution,” the CEO said. “While the works are expected to cost some $1.7million, this has been foreseen through the council’s asset management work and a budget provision of $6.5million has previously been in council’s long term financial planning for refurbishment of the 50 metre pool in 2030.”

SPORT NATIONAL HONOURS FOR POPULAR LOCAL SPEEDWAY ICONS The Borderline Speedway was front and centre at the weekend’s Speedway Australia Awards for the second year running with stalwart Bill Barrows inducted in the Hall of Fame and Steven Lines voted by his peers as the Sportsperson of the Year.
Last year, the Borderline Speedway won Track of the Year and Bill was awarded the Volunteer of the Year, and his dedication to the sport, both as a competitor and administrator, was recognised, four years after the committee originally nominated the hard working volunteer. Bill’s racing career started in 1968 in hot rods before moving to Lightweight Super Modifieds, which were the pre0cursor to the sprintcars. Bill’s best finish in the Australian Championships was second and he clocked up more than 20 years on track. He was a key driver behind setting up the popular World Series Sprintcar series with John Hughes and was also a pioneer in setting up Speedway Australia as a governing body for the sport. His commitment to his home track, the Borderline Speedway, has been unwavering, taking on the presidency in 1973 and for numerous terms since then, as well as being the driving force behind the track redevelopment in the 1980w, the 1994 overhaul and the
Speedway president Cary Jennings was thrilled for the two awardees that call the Borderline home. “It is so richly deserved for Bill,” Jennings said. “And congratulations to Steve Lines for his season, taking out the World Series Sprintcars and being named Sportsperson of the Year by his peers. It is just great to see two guys who work so hard be honoured by the industry.” 2017 makeover, which is ongoing. And Bill is not just the ideas man, he rolls up his sleeves in helping with everything from track preparation to building corporate boxes. The Sportsman of the Year Award for Lines was a stunning end to the 2018/19 season for the popular sprintcar driver. Against the odds and with no contract, he won the World Series Sprintcar, and he is clearly a hard working battler in a sport that requires plenty of financial backing to get the job done. It was Lines’ second victory in the World Series event. Borderline

HARD TO BELIEVE Australians are used to seeing Rashid Khan bamboozle all batsmen playing for Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash over the past couple of seasons but he is not enjoying the same level of success in the World Cup. Against England last week he become the first spinner in history to give away 100 runs in an ODI. The 20-year-old Afghan conceded 110 runs, including 11 sixes and three fours from his nine overs against England. England captain Eoin Morgan was the main destroyer clubbing a record 17 sixes in his 148 runs off just 71 balls.

BABE RUTH STILL MAKING HISTORY Babe Ruth is one of the most recognisable names in sport history, so much so the baseball legend has set a new record 71 years after his death. A New York Yankees jersey worn by the baseball legend has gone under the hammer for $8.2 million AU, making it the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold. Ruth played 22 seasons of Major League Baseball between 1914 and 1935 and is widely regarded as the greatest baseball player ever, winning seven World Series.

Dunn shot 70/75 and took out the overall High Gun 142/150 for the weekend and won AA Grade on Day Two from Dougal Simson and John Maher. Australian team member Rhook had to be content with 1st in Seniors over Rob Shawyer and Chris Ball. SOUTH EAST GOLF VETERANS Fifty-eight players converged on the Millicent golf course to see David Seymour win First Division of the South East Golf Veterans, with 37 points from another local, Terry Chant, 35 points, and third was Rob Ellis on a countback on 34. Second division went to another local, Alan Webster, his first trophy in a decade, on 35, closely followed by Peter Bateman, on 34, and Rob Ceze, from Robe, on 33. The NTPs were taken by Rob Carter and Bill Cheers with the prized Ross Orchard Trophy snaffled by Bob Tonkin and Pat Dempsey. The ball rundown went to 29 points or better. The South East Golf Veterans have a short break before their next outing at Lucindale on July 13. Getaway organiser Glen Tilley has issued a flier offering six suggestions, and asking for feedback, and it seems that the Bellarine Peninsular and the Barossa Valley featured well, but Glen will discuss it further at Lucindale. The Getaway is usually held in April, depending on where Easter falls.

Mount Gambier District Indoor Bowls Association held its fourth Association championship - the Faith Jewellers/ David & Jane Peacock Mixed Pairs. With great team numbers of 27 entries competing, the husband and wife pair from Saints Gary Bowering as the skipper and Jennifer Bowering as the lead, met the in form combination of Serena Bourn, skippering and her brother in-law Brad Errock leading, from Glenburnie and Wandilo. in the first semi final, with the Bowering team winning 6 shots to 5. In the second semi final the Post-Tel and Saints combination of Stephen Von Duve, skippering, and Veronica Opie, leading, defeated the Saints pair of Kath Hearne and Chris Shentall 13 shots to 1. Von Duve and Bowering met in the final, both teams playing exceptionally well and both deserved to make the final. In the final the Bowering team started exceptionally well and maintained a great lead and all Stephen & Veronica could do was to keep trying but they could only score four shots in total giving Gary & Jennifer victory to take out the 2019 Faith Jewellers / David & Jane Peacock Mixed Pairs Championship 11 shots to 4. The consolation semi finals were contested between Keisha Pearson and Coehen Keppels, from Post-Tel & Blue Lake Bowlers, who defeated Matt Nicholls & Val Praetz, from Blue Lake Bowlers 7 shots to 6 and the second semi final saw the Post-Tel team of Zac and Fiona Pearson defeat Thomas Butler & Emma Freemantle from Blue Lake Bowlers 14 shots to 3. TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH
Division one women saw top placed Redbacks take on second placed Tigers, and it was a high intensity match right from the first whistle. Tigers took an early lead thanks to a long ball into the circle and a deflection to striker Teena McKee that went straight under the unsighted goalie. The first quarter ended 1-0 Tigers way, despite Redbacks pushing hard for an equaliser. The second quarter was much of the same, with Redbacks pushing forward aggressively through Zara Blackwell and Gemma Herraper however they could not find the final touch to beat Tigers goalie Sophie Nisbet, who made some outstanding saves. The third quarter saw Redbacks look like scoring on a number of occasions, earning a handful of penalty corners, however they could not get any clean shots on goal as Tigers defence held firm. Mid way through the final term Tigers broke the
arm wrestle and put the game out of reach for Redbacks. Dana Jones earned a short corner and her team mates converted it thanks to the terrific execution of a variation which saw Olivia Turner cross the ball and Ollie Abblitt tip it in to make it 2-0. Redbacks kept on pushing right to the end but failed to hit the scoreboard, with Tigers running out winners 2-0. Best for the victors were Olivia Turner, Kaitlyn Nisbet and goalie Sophie Nisbet, while for Redbacks Lexi Merritt and Lauren Manser played well. Meanwhile, in Under 15 girls action, Tigers took on an undermanned Redbacks side and it was always going to be tough for Redbacks from the very get go. Tigers centre forward Scarlett Creek scored the first goal within the first 2 minutes of the game, neatly dragging the ball around Redbacks goalie Abigail Miller. Tigers were dominating the play through
the mid field and despite their best efforts the defense of Redbacks could not stop the run and carry of Creek, who took her tally to two goals shortly thereafter. Lauren Montgomery, Charlize Greyvenstein and Natalia Vanderhost all found the back of the goal in the first half, as the ball spend most of the time in the Tigers attacking half. Shae Delaney and Laine Blackwell tried hard for Redbacks and were able to lay some excellent tackles, but were unable to make much of a forward foray despite showing some nice stick skills. Zoe Carne controlled theback line for Tigers and didn’t allow anything much past her for the whole game. Tigers switched things around and the second half was a more even affair, with Tigers defender Charlotte Adam having a rare run in the forward line and rewarding her coach with two goals. Despite the score Redbacks goalie Miller did a great job in making a number of saves especially with Tigers players running at her unmarked, but in the end Tigers ran out easy winners 7-0. LONG SERVING BULLDOGS HONOURED It was a big day on the netball courts at Mc Donald mark with four long serving Bulldogs honoured for reaching significant milestones. Competition star Tenille Gray marked her 250th game with another outstanding performance in the A Grade’s narrow victory over long time rival North Gambier. The reigning Western Border Netball Association A Grade best & fairest, who was recently a key member of the SA Country Championship winning A Grade netball team, also being named in the Championship Top 10, has enjoyed a decorated junior and senior career, having played A Grade netball for the past six seasons, having debuted as a teenager. She has multiple association and club best & fairest honours and has been a regular member of the Western Border Netball Team of the Year for the past three seasons. As a junior she was part of many Victorian and South Australian Country Championship winning teams and she is a multi-premiership player at junior level with the Bulldogs. Also clocking up 250 games was athletic defender Jacinta Clark, who is back in A Grade company in season 2019 after a couple of seasons of walking away with the Western Border Netball Association’s A Reserve best & fairest silverware. Clark boasts an incredible vertical leap and an ability to read the play and she is also a coach and umpire at the kennel. Young gun Sara
Smith also hit a milestone – 200 games – the third member of the 2019 A Grade team to celebrate at the weekend. An emerging mid courter, who mainly plays wing attack in senior ranks, as well as a talented back up goaler, Smith has also built up a strong resume with Western Border junior representation and is also now developing her skills as a junior coach at the club, being at the helm of the 13 & Under B team in season 2019.
Daniela Waters, who is also vice president of the Western Border Netball Association, hit the 300 game mark at the weekend. A long standing C Grade player at the club, who impacts at both ends of the court, Daniela has a strong history in being on the East Gambier committee and she has also taken on the role of coach in many of those seasons at McDonald Park.
