COVER - CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF CHANGING LIVES An institution in Mount Gambier, Squashbrook Fitness & Leisure has been helping people improve their health and lifestyle for 40 years! A brave development by Barry Brook, saw the best Squash facility in South Australia at the time, open its doors on June 13, 1979. A thriving squash community revelled in the new facilities, with eight courts consistently booked to capacity every night of the week. As participation dwindled, Barry recognised the need for diversification, and expanding into a fledgling fitness industry proved a wise decision that set Squashbrook on a path that would forever shape its future. The introduction of aerobics classes and the addition of the indoor pool, spa and sauna were the first steps to becoming what is now the largest fitness centre in the Limestone Coast. Strength training, growth in aerobics exercise and the innovative hydraulic Super Circuit were incredibly popular during the late 80s and early 90s, and as the strength studio grew, more squash courts were lost to fitness. Fast forward to today, and the club is abuzz with energy as people of all ages and fitness levels enjoy the latest and best equipment, programming and services to improve their health and fitness. With a solitary squash court remaining from the original layout, Squashbrook has proven to be a transformation specialists for the business itself and the members! The club now has a large Strength Studio full of the most versatile and

functional equipment, as well as Ladies Strength Studio, a 30-piece Cardio Theatre, two Group Fitness Studios plus an Indoor Cycling Studio, purpose built Kids Club (complete with kitchenette and toilet/changing room) as well as the indoor pool, spa and sauna! The expert personal training team ensures members are equipped with the knowledge, support and guidance to reach their goals, and deliver around 200 personal training sessions every week, as well as provide small group personal training sessions for increased fun and motivation. Barry’s son, Simon, took the reins back in 2011 and has continued to make improvements across every aspect of the business, and with 25 years’ experience in the industry, is well aware of the importance of the personal journey their members are on. “We are proud of our incredible

relationships with our members, some of whom have been here longer than me! We have helped members through incredible transformations and been there through personal tragedy. We have seen members grow up with us, and seen others grow in confidence, energy and capacity to now enjoy so much more in life. These relationships and helping members live their best life, are what drive us to be and do better every day. Our members are like family to us, and its these relationships and our commitment to helping them create their best version of themselves, that has enabled us to continue to change lives for 40 years!” The Squashbrook approach to health, fitness and wellbeing is very much about sustainability. “We believe that life is better when you have the energy, desire and capacity (strength, fitness, stability etc) to move more.

The physical and mental benefits are unparalleled and this status of health provides the opportunity to experience a lot more in life, and therefore ‘Live Better’. Our philosophy is focussing on helping our members achieve their desired results with exercise that replicates and enhances the way your body was designed to move (not just gym exercises) and building sustainable movement and nutrition habits for a long life of experiencing more.” Squashbrook now employs a team of 30 friendly professionals all working towards one goal – helping every member LIVE BETTER! From their elite personal trainers and group fitness staff, member support and Kids Club teams, swim school Instructors and Club Presentation team, they all know they play a huge role in helping our members transform their lives. To celebrate their 40th anniversary,

Squashbrook are having their biggest sale ever, and opening their club up for all to experience the difference! Over the next few weeks, they’re offering huge savings on membership, free seven day trial passes and free visits, and wrapping up with a big party to celebrate and thank all those members and staff that have helped make Squashbrook such an important place for so many. If you would like to find out how you can improve your health and wellbeing with the team at Squashbrook, and become part of the ‘family’, give them a call and they’ll tailor a solution to suit your specific needs. LOOKING TO ADD THE MIRROR BALL TROPHY TO HIS ARIA Scott Maxwell is an ARIA Award winning teacher but did you know he is also an award winning choreographer? While his dancing background is limited, it is not without success. When he worked on the APY Lands he was involved in a dance competition, then known as the Ernabella Dance Competition, and the work her created with his students won. The Grant High School music teacher is not so sure that limited experience, or his musical abilities, will be enough to turn him into a champion dancer, but he is certainly giving it a go. “While there are a lot of similarities, music and dancing are different,” he said. Scott didn’t answer the initial call for him to join the 2019 Swinging With The Stars team but after an hour of soul searching he decided to take up the challenge. “I am all for learning new things and lifelong learning,” Scott said. “Dancing was on the list of something I have never learned but would like to learn and this seemed like a great opportunity to get some quality dance instruction and put myself under the pump.” And he has been under the pump, constantly amazed by the ability of his dance partner to pick up new routines, whatever the genre, and constantly amazed by his own ability to step on his own feet. “The dancers we are dancing with have amazing skills and it is amazing how quickly they pick something up even if it is not their forte,” he said. “They are thinking forward to the next move

Scott Maxwell and his wife Vanessa on the red carpet at the 2018 ARIAs and I am trying to remember what I’m supposed to be doing right now let alone what I am supposed to do next and all that with the time pressure of the music.” But despite the challenges, Scott has been surprised by just how much he has enjoyed the experience. “It is definitely more fun than I thought it was going to be and I’m already thinking about what I’m going to do when this is all over,” he said. While most dancers find hip hop the most difficult, the free spirited music teacher has enjoyed that the most. “It is definitely the most intense but I am just loving being a 46 year old guy doing hip hop,” he said. “There is a lot of attitude in hip hop and I feel like I am unleashing my inner Channing Tatum.” One of the plusses for Scott, over many of his fellow stars in 2019, is he

loves performing so the June 22 public unveiling at The Barn is less daunting. “And I’ve had such great support from my family and friends and the kids at school,” he said. Scott is partnered with Alex Williams – an experienced Swinging With The Stars partner. “She’s really awesome and she has made me feel really comfortable,” Scott said. And like his fellow stars, Scott has been catching up with Alex outside of official rehearsal time to polish the routines. Scott has also promised some signature moves from the couple, as well as some “cracker costumes”. Scott is raising money for the Grant High School Sub Fund, although he was not really aware of the work and reach of the Stand Like Stone Foundation, the organises of this annual fundraiser, until he successfully applied for his own grant

STATE AWARD FOR RECONCILIATION PROJECT The Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership has been given the top honour for its innovative storytelling efforts and inclusive cultural celebrations, receiving a state award for reconciliation. The documentary Demystifying History – Indigenous Culture in the Glenelg Shire was announced last month as the winner of the Local Government category in the 2019 HART (Helping Achieve Reconciliation Together) Awards at an award ceremony in Melbourne. The documentary, which was launched during National Reconciliation Week in 2018, features interviews with Aboriginal leaders and Elders reflecting on the historical moments that have shaped the shire’s cultural identity, aligning with the 2018 National Reconciliation Week theme of ‘Don’t Keep History a Mystery’. The award also honours the combined citizenship ceremony event which was held as part of National Reconciliation Week celebrations. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank said the award recognised the strength of the Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership and the shire’s proactive efforts to help achieve reconciliation, at both a local and national level. “This award is a fantastic achievement not just for the Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership, but also for the broader community, recognising the powerful cultural narrative we have to share in the Glenelg Shire,” she said. “Demystifying History, filmed and produced by local filmmakers Powerhouse Productions, captures the rich history of the Gunditjmara people, sharing their stories and connection to the land. It also highlights why reconciliation is an important part of the community moving forward together as one, as told from the perspective of Gunditjmara people. Since our Reconciliation Week events, the documentary has been watched by more than 25,000 people, ensuring these significant stories of our region’s past are shared and passed along to future generations. We hope that as a result of this award will continue to see relationships develop and deepen within our community based on mutual understanding and respect, paving the way for reconciliation.” The Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership is comprised of representatives from Winda- Mara Aboriginal Corporation, DhauwurdWurrung Elderly and Community Health Service (DWECH), Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the Glenelg Shire Council. to run a ukulele program. “That’s when I first started seeing the type of things they can do – things you would not normally be able to do without help from an organisation like Stand Like Sone,” he said. Scott has enjoyed the help of a hard working fundraising committee made up of students with a sponge throwing competition involving teachers one of the more popular events. A casual day is also on the agenda, but the major fundraising push is this Friday night at Mount Gambier’s Main Corner. The school has an annual event called Wild Winters Night and this year, it will be a fundraiser for Scott and his Swinging With The Stars campaign. Thirteen bands will take to the stage at the Main Corner and there will be a raft of fun fundraising games set up in the reception area. “I still can’t get over the amazing support we have had from so many local businesses and individuals,” Scott said. The hospitality students will be providing mocktails and delicious food for the event and there is an ongoing major raffle as well. There is also another teaser for this Wild Winter Night – for the right price, Scott and Alex may well given guests a sneak peek at one of their June 22 dance routines. Alex is also donating the use of her photo booth for the night. Tickets, which are $5, are available from Grant High School or at the door. You can also donate to Scott’s fundraising effort through the Stand Like Stone website.

VOLUNTEERS HONOURED IN WATTLE RANGE During National Volunteer Week, Wattle Range Council recognised the outstanding achievements of the Lake

McIntyre Management Committee, both past and present, and Kalangadoo volunteer firefighter Mariska Hawke.

Both Mariska and the members of the Lake McIntyre committee had recently been awarded the Premier’s Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Volunteer Service. More than 50 people attended the function held in the Millicent Gallery celebrating the presentation of the Premier’s Certificates by Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll. “The Premier’s certificate is a prestigious South Australian award that recognises and rewards excellence and significant achievements of both community groups and individuals,” Mayor Noll said. “We are extremely appreciative of the contribution volunteers make to our communities across the Wattle Range region, these individuals have been highlighted to us as being particularly passionate in their pursuits. The devotion and environmental awareness of the members of the Lake McIntyre Management Committee has kept this site in a pristine condition. The lake, which was originally a quarry, is now an attractive waterway, home to an array flora and fauna. It now attracts visitors both young and old, and environmentalists from across the world. Lake McIntyre is a scenic and peaceful site created and maintained by the tireless work of these dedicated volunteers over many decades. It is visited at least twice everyday by the volunteers, who undertake the many tasks required to ensure the spot is maintained not only for visitors, but also

its countless wildlife inhabitants.” In appreciation of their efforts Mayor Noll presented the members of the Lake McIntyre Management Committee with a mayoral donation of $500 to assist with ongoing maintenance costs. Mariska Hawke first joined the volunteer Country Fire Service with her husband Garry in 2015. She is now captain of her brigade, the first female brigade captain in Kalangadoo and the only one in the Wattle Range Council district. Mariska is well known for her contribution to the Kalangadoo community through her involvement with the CFS but also roles with the local Bowling Club and Farmers Market. Mayor Noll praised Mrs Hawke for her positive leadership. “It is people like Mariska who are strong leaders and positive role models that others look up to,” he said. “She is an inspiration for other women around her and she encourages her peers to take on similar roles.”

SIDNEY NOLAN EXHIBITION VISITS For the first time in 15 years, the National Gallery of Australia’s collection of Sidney Nolan’s ‘Ned Kelly’ paintings is touring Australia in its entirety. The national tour, including Mount Gambier’s Riddoch Art Gallery, gives Australians across the country the chance to experience some of the most famous and poignant masterpieces of 20th century Australian art. Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series depicts the story of Australia’s most infamous outlaw in a sequence of 26 paintings. Nolan’s starkly simplified silhouette and vibrant colour strokes brought this early colonial mythology to life, with Nolan’s depiction quickly forming part of Australia’s shared iconography. The series is a masterclass on Australian art history and the development of a new figuration and landscape depiction in Australian art. This exhibition runs from June 22 until August 4.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - GENDER EQUALITY RUSSIAN STYLE… By ROBBIE TANSEL Those crazy Russians are at it again. I read with interest this week that a Russian aluminium company are encouraging female employees to wear skirts or dresses no longer than five centimetres from the knee for the month of June. This isn’t sounding weird at all, right? “Why would they come up with such a progressive 1970s policy?” I hear you ask. It’s to boost the morale of male employees at the business. Of course. To make it just that little more puzzling, the ladies also need to wear no makeup and have their hair tied up. To claim the mammoth extra $2.20 per day that the lucky ladies will get for being humiliated and completely objectified, they simply have to send a selfie to their boss. In Australia we call this sexual harassment or something. In Russia they call this an innovative plan to improve staff wellbeing. Now look, I don’t want to be all judgemental because, let’s be honest, this is an inspired idea and I will shortly have my Russian passport sorted and be figuring out what sort of skills I can bring to the aluminium company. I hate work. I currently only really continue going to work each day on the basis that there may be cake that day. It may be someone’s birthday and there

may be sugary goodness of some kind which would make the rest of my day bearable. If I knew that there would be ladies showing a bit of leg every day, then I’m pretty sure I’m the first one to work each day, and the last one to leave in the afternoon. I wouldn’t be wasting sick days unless I had the bubonic plague. I’d be a very committed attender at work. The aim of this program is for women to “maintain their essence” and to improve the men’s morale. Where do I start with that one? I’ve got no idea what the female essence actually means. Luckily Mr Russian aluminium company

CEO went on to describe what the female essence is saying, “So that young women do not have male haircuts, do not change into trousers, so that they engage themselves in handicraft, project all their warmth into raising children.” Phew. I thought this was pretty sexist until he reminded me that short hair makes you a male and girls shouldn’t wear trousers. Will they really have time for making aluminium though if they’re doing cross stitch and pumping babies out? I thought my grandpa was dead but apparently he just moved to Russia and became the head of an aluminium

company. I’m guessing the next thing we’ll here from his aluminium factory is how he’s fired all the gays and the Asians. As for the men’s morale, my morale might be better but my productivity would be significantly worse. I’d be spending my days looking at legs, talking about legs, getting yelled at for ogling legs, and eating cake. There’ll still be cakes for birthdays, not just the leg thing, right? I’ll be honest. If the choice is cake or legs, I’m going to have to take the cake. I get to touch that, and I’ll assume that the girls with the nice legs still won’t let me near them. The $2.20 won’t mean that my unwanted attention is any more wanted. I feel fortunate that while I was at school I didn’t really notice that there were girls and they had legs and other bits. I don’t know how I’d go today in a world where girls (some girls) are quite comfortable sending pictures of themselves in various states of undress. Something tells me I would have missed a due date or two. Again, my attendance would be great, but I query whether my productivity and achievement would be as good. Before anyone gets all cranky with me, I know this is completely wrong and unacceptable. But don’t act like if the shoe was on the other foot and the company was paying an extra $2.20 for muscly men to work with their shirts off, you wouldn’t be on a plane to Moscow. If you didn’t realise that Russia was stuck in the 1970s email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR MILLICENT TEACHER

ARIA AWARD BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Emma Laucirica is really enjoying her Swinging With The Stars experience and she doesn’t know to whom to give the credit. “I got a call at school one day and Tahlia Gabrielli said my name had come up at a committee meeting to be one of the dancers,” Emma said. “But it is still a mystery to me, I don’t know who nominated me.” Emma has no formal dance training and was a gymnast when she was younger. “That might be helping a bit,” she said. “But I haven’t had dance lessons until now.” Like most of her fellow stars, Emma was a reluctant volunteer, but is now loving the experience. “The routines are more complicated than I thought we would have to do but I am loving it,” she said. Partnered with Jayden Green, Emma has been pleasantly surprised by how eventually she can pick up the moves required for this challenging competition. “They have definitely thrown us in the deep end but they break it down for us really well and they are so good at helping us get the moves,” she said. The tango has proved the most challenging for the Hatherleigh netballer, who is also coaching her A Reserve team in season 2019, and certainly taking up more time at the extra sessions she is rehearsing with Jayden. “We are definitely trying to fit in even more extra sessions now it is getting closer,” Emma said. “The tango is the one where I am still trying to get some of the sections right.” The one thing she knows will be right on the night is her costumes, which have thankfully arrived well on time and, just as importantly, they fit. A Year 3/4 teacher at Millicent North Primary School, it is through the school that Emma first became aware of the Stand Like Stone Foundation and its work. “The Stand Like Stone Foundation gives our school vouchers so I knew a bit about what they did and am so happy to be able to raise money for the foundation and its work,” she said. She also headed along to the event a couple of years ago when a friend was involved so she knows what it is all about going into the June 22 performances. Emma’s fundraising schedule has been super busy and she is grateful to have the support of so many friends and colleagues to get every event off the ground and well supported. “It is like I have had a little committee running each event and they have done things without me even having to ask,” Emma said. Emma has run a quiz night and a kids fashion parade at the school, and is currently running a silent auction, which you can access via her facebook page, as well as the usual raffles. She has also bee supported by Delicia Acai & Protein Bar, in Mount Gambier, and McCourt’s Café, in Millicent, donating a percentage of certain items sold in their

Grant High School’s Scott Maxwell was announced as the 2018 Music Teacher of the Year, taking home an ARIA from Australian music’s night of nights, he was not sure what that would mean. Aside from 15 minutes of fame and a chance to rub shoulders with the industry’s elite. But it looks set to open quite a few doors for the ARIA winner, and last month he took a masterclass of 45 Melbourne based teachers, at the Victorian Arts Centre, about why he though music was important in education and what makes a good teacher. “I talked about building culture and capacity in a school as well,” Scott said. “I wasn’t sure what winning the ARIA would really mean but it has opened a lot of doors.” He has since worked in tandem with Country Arts SA, had meetings with government ministers and finding he now has a voice on the national stage in terms of education and how it works best. “I feel like I can really make a difference now,” Scott said. “It is really cool and I feel I can reach more people and help more people.” Scott had plenty of positive feedback from the Melbourne masterclass and is hoping to run a similar session in this region and anywhere else the opportunity might arise. And, just as the ARIA win had the perk of meeting music royalty, the masterclass opportunity also saw him enjoy a tour of the Australian

cafes. “Everyone has been so great and so willing to help,” she said. Her next major fundraiser is a Kids Basketball Training at the Millicent Basketball Stadium, where the Mount Gambier Pioneers will be calling the shots, on June 16, with plenty of prizes

up for grabs, as well as the chance to learn from some of the best basketballers in South Australia. You can also support Emma via the Stand Like Stone Foundation website.

Two years ago, Kate Perry attended the 2017 Swinging With The Stars, to support her colleague Amanda Flint – the eventual winner of the mirror ball trophy that year. Now it is her time to shine, after procrastinating about getting involved. “Amanda (Flint) tapped me on the shoulder after she did it and said it would be good for me to give it a go, Kate said. “I basically said ‘no, I’ll pass’ and thought that was the end of it but then I got talking to Nicole Lear who did it last year, she’s my neighbour, and she said I should do it as well and the next thing I know they had passed my number on to Rhett McDonald and he called to ask me to be part of this year’s event. I told him to put my name down before I changed my mind.” But, as reluctant as Kate was initially, she is now looking forward to June 22 and the main event. She is also hoping her background in dance when she was younger might also give her an edge over her fellow stars. “Because I’ve done dance when I was younger performing in front of a crowd is not as daunting to me and hopefully will come more naturally,” she said. Born and bred in Horsham, Kate has become part of the Penola community fabric since moving for love five years ago. She has worked at Koonara Wines as cellar door manager since moving to the area, following stints running a boutique in her home town and working in hospitality in Adelaide.

world of cellar door perfectly describes her foray into the world of dance for this Stand Like Stone Foundation fundraiser, where Kate is raising her funds for the Penola Coonawarra Sub Fund. “Learning the dances has been challenging but good challenging,” Kate said. “It is a different type of dancing to what I’ve done before and obviously you have to work around and with someone else. It’s been so much fun though and I’ve had a really great time. The group of competitors and dancers are so easy to get along with.” Kate is partnered with James Brennan, who has been part of the Swinging With The Stars family in the past. Kate’s fundraising has been nothing if not diverse, from a family fun day in the style of The Amazing Race, that finished with a pop up bar for the grown ups, to a silent auction – all as part of the one event. A pizza night at Raidis Estate, as well as $5 from every Gold Cup Marquee tickets from the Koonara experience going to her fundraising, have also boosted her coffers and at the moment she is has a package offer from Cricket Australia that you can get involved in by heading to her facebook page or calling her at Koonara. Given her Koonara colleague Amanda Flint has won the mirror ball trophy, as has, fellow Penola local Rhett McDonald, Kate is feeling a bit of the pressure to continue the hometown tradition of taking the title. “People have made comments but I am just glad I have been able to do something for the town,” Kate said. “I am really thankful to be asked to do this.” You can also donate to Kate’s fundraising via the Stand Like Stone Foundation website.

LOCAL STUDENTS HEAD TO VIVID

A group of 24 South East students have experienced Vivid Sydney for the first time thanks to a partnership between Samsung Electronics Australia and Social Ventures Australia (SVA). For many of the students, representing Mount Burr Primary School, Nangwarry Primary School and Glencoe Central Primary School, it was their first airplane experience, making it a trip they’ll never forget even before they landed and took in the iconic sights of Sydney. The South East schools were among 15 other schools included in the STEM Learning Hub, an initiative co-created by Samsung and SVA two years ago, endeavouring to bridge Australia’s STEM skill gap by providing students and teachers from low-socioeconomic communities access to Samsung technology and resources to which they would otherwise not have had access. Currently, a disproportionate number of school children in Australia’s low socio-economic communities do not have access to same resources as their peers from metro cities. As a result, by the age of 15 students can be up to five times more likely to be low performers than a student in a higher socio-economic area . These children are also less likely to develop their talent in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), where as many as 75 per cent of the fastest growing jobs will require these skills and

knowledge. Samsung Electronics Australia chief marketing officer Josh Grace said breaking barriers and enabling new experiences through technology was at the heart of the Samsung brand. “Samsung is committed to helping students realise their potential and achieve their dreams.,” he said. “Through our partnership with SVA we want to provide innovative educational experiences that use technology to complement traditional classroom practices and enable the next generation of thinkers with the skills required for the future of work. We were excited to have the Mount Burr, Nangwarry and Glencoe students here in Sydney and hope they learned a lot and just as importantly, had a lot of fun.” The three South East schools were selected by Samsung and SVA for the Vivid experience after demonstrating excellence in their STEM studies. To help the students prepare for Vivid they participated in a photography tour around Circular Quay with well-known photographer, Rob Mullaly. During the tour the students learnt how to take pictures on the Samsung Galaxy A-series smartphone so that they could capture Vivid Sydney in all its glory. Mount Burr Primary School primcipal Anne-Marie Fitzgerald said whilst they very much valued the benefits of their small school and community they also understood the importance of providing

students with learning opportunities beyond the local area to broaden their experiences. “The Samsung Vivid Sydney experience provides an exciting opportunity for our students to engage in purposeful learning beyond Mount Burr,” she said. Suzanne Cridge, Director, Education, Bright Spots Schools Connection, SVA said they wanted to see all children in Australia, no matter where they grow up, to have access to great technology to support their learning. “We are delighted that Samsung supports SVA’s STEM Learning Hub, which is helping create inspiring learning experiences for young people across the country,” she said. The STEM Learning Hub is part of a wider network of 42 schools which are included in SVA’s Bright Spots School Connection. Since the commencement of the Hub, more than 790 teachers and 8000 students have participated in the program. All of the schools involved in the STEM Learning Hub have access to professional development, STEM-specific training and Samsung technology to advance their students’ knowledge, and respond to their changing education demands, equipping them with the STEM skills needed for future prosperity. WINTER WARMER CAMPAIGN

The St Martins Lutheran College Primary Student Representative Council (SRC) recently held a Warm up the Winter Appeal to gather donations of all things warm to assist those in need. The initiative evolved from discussions by the SRC regarding their term fundraiser. The students decided that warm items of clothing would be beneficial for people locally who struggle to keep warm during Mount Gambier’s cold winter months.

The idea supported the college theme for the year Now is the Time, time to help others, as well as the environmental focus of reusing good quality items or which other families had no further use. The Primary SRC contacted Major Pam Marshall, at Mount Gambier’s Salvation Army, who was very welcoming of the idea and any donations to help those in need. With their sights set on helping the local community the Primary SRC invited families of the college

community to donate new or very good quality second hand items of beanies, socks, scarves, blankets and jackets. Over the course a fortnight, including a special college Beanie Day, many warm items of clothing were generously donated by college families and friends. More than five large boxes of blankets and 22 large bags of jackets, jumpers, socks, scarves and beanies were donated. To celebrate the appeal’s success, all of the donations were placed on the stage during a recent college worship service for everyone to see the generosity of the college community (pictured left). Major Pam Marshall visited the college last month to speak with the students and thank them for their contributions and willingness to help those in need. The Primary SRC then delivered all of the items to the Salvation Army Hall to be sorted and distributed to local families in the Limestone Coast.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR BUSINESS & TOURISM AWARDS

Rural romance author Maya Linnell will be at the Mount Gambier Library this Thursday at 7pm to launch her debut novel Wildflower Ridge, a heartfelt story of love and second chances. Set in rural Victoria, Wildflower Ridge centres around Penny McIntyre, an ambitious marketing professional whose fast paced city life is interrupted by the sudden onset of a mystery illness. Forced to abandon her much loved job, her boyfriend and her beloved city apartment, Penny returns to the family farm where she grew up for ten weeks of rest and recuperation. Here she must navigate delicate relationships with her dad and three sisters and with her ex-boyfriend who was the biggest reason she ran in the first place. “Wildflower Ridge has been taken up as part of a two book deal by one of Australia’s leading publishers Allen & Unwin,” Team Leader Library Programs Kristi Leamey said. “It’s an uplifting story about making those hard life decisions and having the courage to give up what you know and follow your dreams.” Author Maya Linnell has evolved from a background in journalism, writing for a rural newspaper and blogging for Romance Writers Australia to write Wildflower Ridge. “Maya has gathered

Local business owner Paul Adams, of Bruno Body Repairs, who received a 2017 Business and Tourism Award in the category of Manufacturing, Trades or Construction, said it was a fantastic feeling to be publicly rewarded. “It was a huge honour to receive a Business and Tourism Award in the category of Manufacturing, Trades or Construction Business,” he said. “It’s not often that you have the chance to be recognised amongst your peers at a local level. Since receiving the award Bruno’s Body Repairs has had some major changes and we are now operating at about double the capacity as we did previously thanks to the construction of a second large workshop space on our site. I encourage my peers, other local businesses, tourism operators and

inspiration for her novel’s quiet, rural setting from the small communities she has always lived in and loved, including the local town of Millicent,” Ms Leamey said. “Maya’s passion for rural life really comes through in her novel. Her descriptions of the charming country setting and family farm are both familiar and touching.” Maya now lives in Narrawong, Victoria with her husband and three children in a house they built themselves. “I grew up in a small country town, climbing towering gum trees and reading my way through my family’s bookshelves before discovering a never ending supply of novels at the local library,” Ms Linnell said. The group were fortunate to get an insight into South Australia’s leading sustainable energy industries. Tenison Woods College takes pride in having their students play the lead role in taking the school off grid, while also working towards TAFE accreditation. During the year, students are provided the opportunity to install solar panels on college rooftops under the guidance of two qualified trade teachers, Brad Colliver and Brad Marcus. This practical project is one of many where students and curriculum play a vital

role in enhancing the sustainability aspects of the Ccllege, with the school committing to be completely off grid by 2030. The students in the Electro Technology program will play a critical role in meeting this commitment. LOCAL SPORT PIONEERS ON TRACK

MUCH LOVED SAINT The AFL recently inducted another six members to its Hall Of Fame. All worthy inductees but the one that really got the emotions going was the late Trevor Barker. Barker died from cancer in 1996 at the age of just 39. In the 15 years Barker played for St Kilda the club claimed seven wooden spoons and won just 27% of their games and Barker still holds the record for playing the most AFL games without a finals appearance (230). Over this period of team mediocrity Barker was his club’s best player, most skillful player, most spectacular, most athletic, most courageous, most selfless, most loyal, most versatile, most committed, its hardest trainer, best tackler, in addition to being his club’s pin-up boy with a playboy image to match. The AFL coverage of the announcement featuring current Western Bulldogs coach LUke Beveridge saying how growing up he wanted to ‘be Trevor Barker” and ex-teammate Danny Frawley, better known these days for playing the clown on Bounce, breaking into tears just trying to talk about Barker, was very emotional.

OLYMPIAN RETIRES Two-time swimming world champion and Olympic silver-medallist James Magnussen has retired from competitive swimming. he 28-yearold Magnussen won silver in the men’s 100m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics and won the men’s 100m freestyle at the 2011 and 2013 World Championships.

“So far, touch wood, we are progressing like I thought we might.” That is the measured analysis of Mount Gambier Pioneers head coach Richard Hill as the team braces for the final six minor round matches of their first premier League season and then play offs. “I thought we could be pretty good,” Hill said. Those predictions, though, were always clouded by the messy off season change of competitions and the late start up for the program and finalising the playing rosters for both the men’s and women’s teams. Pleasingly the team has powered through a mid season patch of injury, where both Sam Daly and Erik Burdon were unavailable at times, with limited damage to the win loss record which sits at 11-3, and the added bonus of getting more minutes into the local talent on the bench. “The draw favoured us a little bit through that period in terms of who we played,” Hill said. With the long weekend basketball free for both teams, Hill was able to reflect on what he viewed as perhaps the men’s team’s best weekend yet, taking on Norwood and Centrals Districts on the road last round, as well as the home court victory over West Adelaide. “The win over West Adelaide was really good because I really rate them even though they are lower than us on the ladder,” Hill said. “The win over Norwood was also great. We had set ourselves for a win but to win by 31 was really good.” That is also the match where Hill felt the defensive end of the court got the job done as well as the offensive end, which has consistently been scoring more than 100 points a game. “Defensively we hadn’t been as good as I would have liked but it is improving,” Hill said. He also admits that the high tempo game the Pioneers are continuing to play, means there will naturally be more scoring opportunities for both teams. “Each year we have tried to play a little faster and we have picked up the tempo massively this year,” Hill said. “I think this Is probably the fastest team we have had although the ’17 team was pretty good. The strength of most of our guys this year is our speed.” So while keeping teams below 80 was the norm in past season, this year below 90 is getting the job done given the average winning margin in recent rounds for the Pioneers men has been 30 points. One of the highlights of the 2019 season thus far has been the marked improvement in Lachie Hunter, who is traveling from Adelaide, where he is studying, each weekend to be part of the Pioneers line-up. “I always thought Lachie was ready to start playing some serious minutes, even if the SEABL still existed, that he had served his apprenticeship and his improvement has been even greater than what I expected,” Hill said. “Considering he doesn’t train with us it has been great and the good news is, he is going to be able to put in a couple of weeks training with the group leading into the play offs. Lachie deciding to stay and play with us has been massive.” Another positive for the group is the rejuvenated Erik Burdon, who is now shooting off the charts since his injury enforced break from the court. “He worked really hard in that period of time he had off, exceptionally hard for a guy his age and he is shooting the ball as well as ever and like we expect from him,” Hill said. “If we can stay healthy we are right in it.”

The women’s team is currently sitting second on the ladder with imports Amanda Frost and Pachis Roberts leading the way with great support from an ever-improving Emily Winter and Maddy and Olivia Wormald. Above (left) - Erik Burdon’s return from injuury has coincided with a return to great shooting form from the popular long range sharpshooter. BEYOND 2019 A couple of weeks ago club officials met with Basketball Australia and Basketball Victoria as the club continues to explore the possibility of another shot at the elite NBL1 competition. A similar meeting with Premier League officials in South Australia is on the calendar for a fortnight’s time. “The club is engaged in ongoing discussions with all the relevant parties and we are committed to pursuing a future for both the men’s and women’s teams representing the Pioneers Basketball Club,” chairman Tom Kosch said. Applications for NBL1 are not open until August, while the Premier League meeting will be a chance for all clubs to have their say on the inclusion of the Mount Gambier teams in season 2019. Head coach Richard Hill said the success of the Pioneers had been built on providing an entertainment product for local people that people enjoyed going to watch. “The support of this community continues to blow my mind,” Hill said. “There is nowhere else in Australia where teams are playing in front of 900 people, a full house, for both the women’s and men’s games. That is the crowds we have been consistently getting this year and that is the same crowd we used to get for play offs.”

From the newly released Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute to the hallmark Sprinter van range, guests were treated to everything that makes the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles such a popular choice for business owners who need reliability, comfort and safety on the roads every day to continue to run their successful enterprises.
