COVER • CRAFT LOVERS’ PARADISE The Millicent Geltwood Craft Festival, opening on Friday, April 5, provides an ideal opportunity for people from across the country to meet, and express their creativity. The centrepiece of the festival is the quilting displays where hundreds of intricate pieces are exhibited throughout the township of Millicent. In addition, those wishing to learn the art of quilting or further their skills can participate in the many workshops on offer during the festival. The festival is jam packed with workshops and events, well attended by the many visitors to the town. Local workshop coordinator Kathy Patten said registrations were now open for all of the fantastic workshops. “You don’t have to be an expert and we encourage
novices or beginners to join us and have a go,” Kathy said. This year the charity of choice is Anglicare in Adelaide. All quilts will be given to foster children in South Australia. These children are aged between birth and 18 years of age. All donated quilts will be on display throughout the Geltwood Festival. Whilst the focus of the Geltwood Festival is on quilting there are many other events held throughout the week that will appeal to a wide audience. A PIONEER IN DANCE Mount Gambier’s MJ Dance Studio has churned out more than its fair share of graduates that have ended up with burgeoning careers in the dance industry – alumni including Euan Doidge, Matt Cram, Cristina d’Agostino, Sam Malseed and Kiana and Symiko De Van Der Schueren – but there had to be a trailblazer, the one who first charted the course and that was Daniel Ryan. Daniel joined director Maria Slape’s studio in 1991 as a 10 year old. “I did started relatively late as a dancer,” Daniel said. He had always had a penchant for dance but it was only after his sister started classes at MJ that he decided to take the plunge. “As a five year old I really wanted to do
tap lessons,” Daniel said. “But when I started at MJ I got straight into jazz and loved that.” He also formed a formidable partnership with his sister, with the pair teaming up for duo performances that eventually led to competitions. It wasn’t long before the siblings branched out on their own, shining as soloists as Daniel paved the way for those who came after, often being the only male in the class, or, indeed, the studio. Even in those early days, Daniel remembers the flow of teachers and choreographers from Melbourne that would visit the studio and develop the local students. But then came the real eye opener at the end of 1997 when Daniel was talent identified and received a scholarship to Melbourne’s Dance World courtesy of iconic teacher and choreographer Barbara Warren-Smith. “At the beginning of ’98 I went to summer school at Dance World and they offered me a position with a scholarship to continue training there – starting immediately,” Daniel said. “I had not gone to summer school with the intention of staying permanently at all so when they offered me that opportunity it was just crazy. It was a really big thing for me at the time.” And so Daniel became the first MJ dancer to go into full time training and subsequently into a full time career in the industry. “When I got to Dance World for summer school it was
9am-4pm everyday and I hadn’t done anything like that before but I caught the eye of the director and they called my dad and said they thought I had ability,” Daniel said. And so there was basically a 10 day turnaround and 17 year old Daniel embarked on his new life. “I had just finished Year 11,” he said. “But I had no intention of doing Year 12 when this opportunity came up so it was kind of a now or never situation.” And Daniel certainly got lucky – not just securing the scholarship – but he ended up with a strong group of dancers in his year and there were 10 boys, which was a big number to be in a full time course.
But it was not all smooth sailing and Daniel’s second year away was, by his own admission, ‘shaky’, so he turned his two year training into three. “That was the best choice I ever made,” Daniel said. “That was when I was really able to lock down what I wanted.” Teaching was always on Daniel’s radar and post-graduation he started immediately. “I think teaching is a really important part of your dance education,” Daniel said. “You have to be disciplined.” Daniel also maintained his own training, attending classes, as well as dipping his toe into corporate work and was also a sought after back up dancer for a variety of singers. His first professional gig in a musical was in 2001 in the Man of La Mancha through to 2005 when he was part of Saturday Night Fever – in a twist of fate, Euan Doidge, arguably MJ’s most famous alumni, is now set to play the lead in the same musical. And while performing remains a passion for Daniel, the pull of choreography was getting stronger and Daniel started working on creating routines for music videos. He also worked in film, including the 2006 Aussie movie Boytown, with television work, both commercials and TV series, also coming his way. It wasn’t long before Daniel was contemplating starting his own business and the Melbourne Dance Centre was born. It is a performance and training hub space
that incorporates classes, workshops, rehearsal space, a dance company and everything in between. Daniel’s own dance company, Into the Dark, has put on four shows in the past eight years. Having not seen an MJ performance since he left Mount Gambier for dance World, , last year in June, Daniel spent two days back at his old studio, albeit in its new home, and put together a stunning jazz piece for MJ Dance Studio’s 30th Anniversary Concert. “I was really pleased with how it ended up,” Daniel said. “For the dancers to be able to pick it up in a 10 hour period over two days was amazing. The kids did a great job of it.”
DARTMOOR FEE SUBSIDY SECURED Families in Dartmoor will soon be able to access subsidised childcare thanks to the advocacy efforts of the Glenelg Shire Council. Council has secured a landmark fee subsidy arrangement for Dartmoor Children’s Centre following six months of negotiations with the Federal Government, providing significant fee reductions for eligible families. IT’S PARTY TIME You might have noticed Mount Gambier is starting to turn a distinct shade of blue. Shopfronts and vehicles are all heralding the arrival of Fringe Mount Gambier for a third successive year by basically painting the town blue – Mount Gambier’s version of painting the town red and the 10 days of unique Fringe fun and frivolity kicks off with Friday night’s Lift Off Street Party. Fringe Mount Gambier ambassador Louise Adams is counting the sleeps and says the street party, where the Cave Gardens and adjacent Commercial Street East precinct will be blocked off and transformed into a sea of food and wine providers, street performers and a raft of family entertainment, including the Pied Piper Parade. “An event like the street party encourages anyone who wants to get dressed up and get silly and to really embrace that kind of community feeling and enjoyment of art and culture and experience it all together in the one space – it’s just wonderful,” Louise said. “You look around and see people of all ages and different backgrounds all together having a good time, letting their hair down and getting into the mood for Fringe – it’s a great way to start it.” Having experience plenty of festivals, including Fringe events in a number of places around Australia and indeed the world, Louise is proud of the event being created and developed in Mount Gambier. “The powerful thing that I’ve always found about Fringe Adelaide or Edinburgh or now Mount
Gambier is it gives audiences and artists permission to explore and push the boundaries,” she said. “Performers often do things they don’t usually do for the rest of the year and audiences get to see different types of performances and things they might not always get to see.” The way the community has embraced Fringe Mount Gambier has been heartening for organisers and the 2019 program has again received wonderful business support and a record number of venues wanting to host performances and events. “It was really, really important when we started Fringe Mount Gambier in 2017 that one of our aims was that the community needed to take ownership of it and take it on as their own,” she said. “It’s important for the audiences to feel, ‘wow, this is our festival’. The support from business has also surpassed any expectation we might have had – it’s really inspiring.” And once people have dusted themselves off from Friday night’s Fringe opener, the Cave Gardens is again the centre of the arts and culture universe with the Fringe Showcase. “I was important we had an
Fly Free
TO ASIA!
event that was accessible to everyone featuring a diverse range of artists and experiences,” Louise said. Saturday’s showcase is a free event to supplement the ticketed events that will run through until March 31. “We have that combination of artists visiting Mount Gambier and also talent that is from here – it’s a wonderful mix,” Louise said. During the day, the program could be best described as interactive and then after 4pm the headline acts take centre stage. “Circus, magic, music, cabaret – a bit of something for everyone,” she said. Yummy Deluxe is a program highlight. The multi award winning group is a mix of drag, music, circus and burlesque and it’s all in one show. The circus act Boss Squad also looms as a crowd favourite – an all female troupe. “They put this together to smash the stereotype in the circus world about what females can do,” Louise said. Given the strong dance culture in Mount Gambier, there is some amazing dance performances on the program and choreographer Lewis Major returns and will be working with visiting dancers as well as taking advantage of the dance
talent in Mount Gambier. One of the unique and so by definition typical Fringe show is a visiting producer who is putting together Sounds of Fringe. “This is one of the things I love about Fringe,” Louise said. “This producer will be sampling the sounds and noises from the Fringe across Friday and Saturday and creating a track that is Fringe Mount Gambier 2019 right there in the Cave Gardens. He’ll be making the track in front of audiences and that’s really cool.” A walking comedy performance with former local David Maney and the List Dance Theatre performing in the Umpherston Sinkhole represent some of the more ‘outside the square’ options and quirky performance spaces that typify Fringe. “We hope that everyone in our community finds something that will peak their interest and encourage them to go check it out.” Above (from left) - Headline act Yummy Deluxe & Sienna Sashcroft enjoying the fun at the 2018 Street Party. Below - Rose Lockwood, Sammi Cummins & Nikie Smith at the 2018 Street Party.

Liberty Church Mount Gambier has been running a domestic violence victim support program for a few years, working hand in hand with local support services to provide financial assistance as well as practical support, including making blankets, purchasing Christmas trees and decorations for displaced families and providing items most needed when women and children end up in temporary accommodation. “We just felt, as women in the church that we could sit around having tea and cake and enjoy nice get togethers and outings or we could make a difference in our community,” church member Belinda Tilley said. Having already established this link with domestic violence support systems in the region, combined with the horrific, recent domestic violence death right here on our doorstep, has seen Liberty ramp up its efforts and be part of a new fundraising push
by White Ribbon called Cheese for Change. It will see the church host a wine and cheese tasting on March 29, from 7-8.30pm. White Ribbon has set a target of $200,000 nationally as it looks to focus on prevention through generational change. Given that statistics show 85% of Australian women have been sexually harassed and one woman a week is killed at the hands of a current or former partner, White Ribbon, and, in turn, Liberty Church, are looking to start a conversation and end violence against women in Australia. “We were so stunned by what happened in our own community that we wanted to do something by way of response,” Belinda said. “We didn’t want to sit inside our four walls and just say ‘what a shame’, we wanted to do something to draw the community together.”
She said hosting a Cheese for Change event was a way of living out the concept of not just looking after your own interests but the interest of others. Business support for the event has already been overwhelming and Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinec will speak on the night. Tickets are $25 a head and are available from Clockwise Jewellers or online through Eventbrite, with the majority of the proceeds going back to White Ribbon towards its national target and a small amount to help continue to fund the church’s own ongoing support program. An event focussing on male victims of domestic violence and issues like anger management is set to be hosted by another group later this year.
Anniversary celebrations are on the horizon for the Holdens of Age Car Club Mount Gambier with a 20th anniversary event set down for April 13. It was on that same date in 1999, after an expression of interest a fortnight earlier, that the local club was established, travelling to Adelaide and Melbourne and everywhere in between. Cars eligible for the club have to be 21 years or older and can be original, restored or modified. Making the VT commodore now eligible. The club has a current membership of more than 30, with partners and children also set to be involved in the anniversary event. The 20th birthday celebrations will be held from 10am to 2pm at Freeman’s Landing at the Valley Lake, with a display of the club membership’s Holdens, a visit from respected Holden writer Don Loffler, who will have his new book for sale, and a cake cutting ceremony at 10.30am. Especially On Birthday’s is an imagetheatre performance for 3-8 year olds that follows a pair of five year old twins in the lead up to their sixth birthday. AUSSIE AUTHOR HITTING THE ROAD IN THIS REGION WITH NEW BOOK A small town in Victoria destroyed by bushfire is the subject of Australian award winning author Fiona Lowe’s latest release Home Fires. Fiona will launch her latest book at the Mount Gambier Library, on March 19, at 7pm. She will be at the Casterton Library from 11am-12noon on March 20 and Portland Library on the same day from 5.30-7pm. Fiona has been described as a gifted storyteller who writes evocative tales of everyday Australian people fighting for themselves, their families and their towns. “Her latest release Home Fires will certainly pull on people’s heart strings of those in our local community with many in the region on bushfire alert during the summer season,” Library Programs team leader Kristi Leamey said. The town of Myrtle is the centre of Fiona Lowe’s book, set in the beautiful Otway Ranges in Victoria, where a lethal bushfire tears through the town destroying not only the homes and buildings, but the lives of the residents that it leaves behind. For three women in particular the fire has fractured their every existence as they struggle to move on. Eighteen months later, with the flurry of national attention long past, Myrtle stands restored, shiny and new but scar tissues of the trauma runs deep. Each of the three women expose their secrets and face the damage that day wrought with a shocking truth emerging that will shake the town to its newly rebuilt foundations. “Home Fires is hot off the press and has already received rave reviews from readers and fellow authors,” Ms Leamey said. “My latest book is based around the premise that a group of people who have been affected by the same natural disaster will all experience it differently,” author Fiona Lowe said. “This was an emotional write for me but also promotes the importance of hope and resilience.” This is a free community event with limited seating. For bookings please contact the Mount Gambier Library by calling (08)8721 2540 or book online at www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au and follow the links to the library and programs and events.

The Boandik Community Wellbeing Centre contracts were signed last week as the next key step in the process with construction officially getting underway on Monday. Right - Boandik planning and development committee chair Peter Burchell; Mossop Construction + Interiors regional manager Craig Williamson, Mossop Construction + Interiors managing director Neil Mossop, Boandik CEO Gillian McGinty, Thomson Adsett’s Brett Somerville; Boandik Board of Directors chairman Andrew McGregor & project manager Damien Spencer.
WINDFALL FOR BOANDIK Boandik is thrilled to have been allocated 48 residential aged care places following its application to the Department of Health Aged Care Approvals Round last year. The Department of Health will also be providing a $1.5m capital grant to assist with the project that is estimated to cost $11.6m. The design will create a small home model with familiar décor and layout and a design which supports people to have quality of life. The environment will be designed to create meaningful activities that are an extension of normal routine and life. Residents will be involved in daily activities including helping with the cooking and laundry, choosing meals and going to the onsite supermarket to purchase the supplies for the home.
“Boandik is planning for the future to meet the predicted increase in the age of the population in the our region, it is estimated that there will be an 86% increase in people over 80 in the wider Mount Gambier area in the 15 years to 2031,” Boandik CEO Gillian McGinty said. “Boandik’s strategic plan focusses on continuing to support the community through expansion of services, both in residential accommodation and in the person’s home. “Boandik is about to commence the construction of the Community Wellbeing Centre which is a major step in the masterplan. “At the same time Boandik will be setting timeframes and developing plans for the specialised dementia accommodation and will keep the community informed as our plans progress.” Charla Lodge, in Bordertown, also received 16 new places as part of the Barker funding allocation.

Thumb Print Workshop Inc is now set up to be a fully functioning print studio, having recently purchased a brand new printing press, which is being housed at the Chapel Studio, Suttontown Road, Mount Gambier. This press was purchased with funds raised by the association and a generous grant from of Stand Like Stone Foundation (SLSF), with an additional substantial donation from Darren Turner and Jo Stafford from Framing Solutions. This press gives the incorporated association an increased ability to provide community workshops on a diverse range of printing techniques, including dry point etching, lino print and waterless lithography. The membership of Thumb Print Workshop Inc ranges from accomplished full time artists to emerging artists and their work is available locally at the Riddoch Art Gallery and Gallery 54 in Penola. The Shorelines exhibition of works is currently on display in the Cathleen Edkins Community Gallery at the Riddoch Art Gallery and a further exhibition of this work opened in
the gallery space at Port MacDonnell Community Complex last Friday. New members are always welcome, and a further series of workshops open to members and members of the public will be offered in the coming months.

IN THE GARDEN Autumn appears to be here, with damp dewy morning and crisp nights and has certainly made us extremely busy in the nursery, not only with customers, but with all the processes of potting, propagating at our Gardenarium Nursery, and our Limestone Coast Roses and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, part of our sister companies, which are preparing the trees and roses in the paddocks for the run down to harvesting. Yes, its hard to believe that in a few weeks time we will begin the process of digging our dormant (often refered to as bare rooted stocks). We have been extremely busy despite the fact we haven’t had much rain, in particular ,fruit and nut trees at 50 %, which is a huge bonus as you are getting three and four year old trees that are well into fruiting and far less cost than the new bare rooted season stock, with the added bonus of not having to wait so long for a good crop of fruit. Plus there has been a huge flurry of customers all eager to do things in the garden all we need now is some more rain. Autumn is such a great time to plant, as the soil warmth is there, but we have the guarantee of cooler weather and, of course, rain. This year the lack of spring has spurred us on to have some specials on ornamental trees, fruit and nut trees, as well as berries, grapes, blueberries, kiwi fruit and much more. From March 19 to the 31, we will be having a massive half price tree
By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant sale to make way for the new season’s trees that we will be digging out of the paddock . Plus a Garage Sale to clear some pots, oudoor furniture, fountains and many gift lines ready for our next buying trips to bring in some new ranges. There’s always something going on at Gardenarium & The Pot Shop, Limestone Coast Roses We are clearing all of the trees and fruit trees in our retail advanced tree and fruit tree section on Bay Road in Mount Gambier to make room for a further expansion to our advanced trees section and this can only mean one thing - bargains all round. Yes, all of our ornamental, flowering, shade, avenue and street trees, along with fruit, nut, kiwi fruits etc. will be up to 50% off, with $5 and $10 trees and fruit trees in our clearance bins. Planting trees now, whilst the ground is warm, will get some amazing growth, but the main factor is that the plants will be well settled in for next spring. All of the 2019 new release ornamental trees and fruit trees are going on our website www. gardenarium.com.au/trees) in the next few weeks with the 2019 new release roses, about to be added, maybe by the time this goes to print - a timely reminder to get your rose and tree orders in for new season’s dormant (bare rooted) stock that can be ordered online at any time or call in to the nursery or ring your order through. Bear in mind that most of our roses are sold
interstate now with our huge online presence and massive range of roses, which is one of the biggest if not the biggest range in Australia. Not many people locally know how much stock leaves our nursery everyday for New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and lots in to South Australia. For this reason alone it is doubly important if you want to secure any of the new season’s releases to get your orders in soon, as much of our stock is already sold out or close to sold out. Don’t leave it until the roses and trees are dug to come in and expect all the new releases to be available. The biggest stars of last season was the new release rose Unconventional Lady – whose proceeds will aid the running of the large rose conference in 2021, to be run in Adelaide, chosen by the Rose Society of SA. We have bushes of these still flowering away merrily in the nursery if you haven’t yet purchased one for this worthy cause. One of my favourites for this year is Dear Father, a rich velvety red rose with masses of stunning flowers, and a good idea for a Fathers Day gift. More of the information will be in next month’s In the Garden segment in Lifestyle1 as well as on our website www. limestonecoastroses.com.au We have been taking orders since November 1 last year, so some varieties are getting close to sold out, as we reach the cut off for orders and commence digging roses from the paddock in the next few weeks.
The Pot Shop part of the business has been busy receiving container loads of glazed, terracotta, sandstone and concrete pots over the past few months and we also need to clear some of those to make more room for more pots, trees and outdoor furniture. A huge shipment arrived last week and we endeavour to have some massive terracotta pot that have become so unavailable in recent years, along with some huge one off ponds and massive succulent bowls up to one metre across. Some of the terracotta which is all now pre-sealed, so it doesn’t dry
out like the old terracotta, has been drastically reduced and with the strength of the Aussie dollar is now cheaper than buying plastic pots. So, come in and browse through the extensive range and pick up a bargain. Much of our giftware, wall art and fountains will also be on clearance, as well as birdhouses, dovecotes etc. as we make room in our new gift shop area, which is bursting at the seams, so an ideal time to pick up an early Mother’s Day bargain. We are situated at 167, Bay Road (Riddoch Highway) 1.3 kms south of the Blue Lake roundabout, so we’ll look forward to seeing you then.

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - DEAR ROBBIE 36… By ROBBIE TANSEL I received this email this week. “Dear Robbie, I read your article about the good old days last week. ’m so sick of reading all your grizzling. I don’t remember the good old days as being that good. In the good old days I had to live in the same house as you. The only good thing about the good old days was when I got to deliver a good old donkey punching to you. Nothing was better than when I used to be able to lay some knuckles into your big, stupid head. Little Petey Tansel from Penola.” Well I would have received that email if he could have been bothered turning his computer on, typing it up and sending it. He just told me that when he saw me the other day. Ah, Pete, Pete, Peter. Isn’t it funny how the years dull the memory. For those who haven’t guessed, Pete is indeed my little brother. He is three years younger than me and ten to fifteen years behind me in other areas of development. It really must be hard for younger siblings when the older siblings always get all the good genes. Pete is correct though when he says he used to like to throw fists at me. One area that he was far better developed in than me was temper. There are countless classic family stories involving
lifestyle1.net | 28
Pete and his legendary temper. One of the best involves the time he got so angry and was waving his arms around, leading to him absolutely belting a bench in the kitchen. This didn’t do anything to change his temper, but it lightened the mood for the rest of the family who were now laughing their heads off. Semi-regularly he would find some reason or another to get annoyed with me, and having limited cognitive functioning and ability to articulate a reasonable argument, he would instead resort to hitting me as hard as he could repeatedly. Fortunately he was only half my size. Unfortunately he’s still only half my size. When he was originally half my
size it indicated that he was really small. He is no longer really small. He is now a reasonable healthy size. And still only half my size. Being small enough to fit in my pocket, Pete hitting me was similar to the damage caused to a warship when a fly lands on it. Having said that I still wanted to retaliate, purely based on the nuisance value of him whacking me. I wanted to hit him. I really wanted to give him a hiding. Unfortunately I knew that even one hit with my incredible power, and his tiny size, would have absolutely destroyed him. I would have crushed him. The most likely outcome of me hitting him would have been him turning from a solid into a gas. I would have vapourised him. Luckily I had amazing self-control and that’s why he continues to be able to turn oxygen into carbon dioxide and eat solid food today. Over the years he became more tolerable (which makes his email attack a little provocative.) One of the key reasons he was more tolerable was that I wasn’t sharing a house with him. Based on his email though, I think we might have a few old scores to settle. Petey’s 40th is coming up in a week and I think maybe we celebrate by throwing down a big blue tarp, stripping down to our underwear, oiling up and wrestling to a three count or submission. Or maybe just a vigorous game of Monopoly. I’m too old for a fight. And tired. And I don’t think anyone wants to see me strip down to my underwear. And violence is never the answer. And it’s your 40th which should be a positive occasion. And let’s be honest you’d kick my butt. If you think eating birthday cake is more important than settling old scores with your stupid sibling, email me at robbietansel@gmail.com Happy early birthday you little punk.

PROVING EVERYONE BELONGS The Naracoorte Town Square will be a spectacle of singing, dancing and bright colours this Friday when the Harmony Day Children’s Festival comes alive from 10am. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity, and is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for everyone. Around 1000 children will head to the Naracoorte Town Square to celebrate cultural diversity by performing a song or dance. The program kicks off with a performance by the Naracoorte South Primary School students followed by Frances Primary School, Michelle DeGaris Memorial Kindergarten, Sunrise Christian School, Naracoorte North Kindergarten, Naracoorte Child Day Care Centre, Naracoorte High School and Naracoorte Primary School. The morning activities culminate with all children dancing together to High Hopes. “Everyone is welcome to come along to the Naracoorte Town Square and celebrate the different nationalities that make up our community and celebrate Harmony Day with the children” Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery said. In the evening, celebrations move to the Naracoorte Swimming Lake for the Wish Festival from 6-9pm.
Entertainment commences at 6pm with a variety of local performers, including Lilly McGuire-Marr and Oscar McGuire-Marr, the Naracoorte Highland Pipe Band and an encore performance of the High Hopes children’s combined dance. At 8pm when the sun is setting, the opportunity will be there to float a lantern on the lake to show that everyone is welcome. Bring your own picnic and rug or chairs. Complimentary food tastings provided by local cultural groups and a traditional BBQ provided by Teys Australia will be available in the evening at the Naracoorte Swimming Lake. “Thanks to local business Teys Australia partnering with council the lanterns will be available free of charge” Mayor Erika Vickery said.. Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day so show your support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia by wearing something orange this Friday.

Three games into the season and the reincarnated Pioneers women’s team is on the board thanks to a gritty home court win over Southern Tigers. The first home game of the Pioneers Premier League season was also a homecoming for two former local stars – Mount Gambier’s Bella Stratford and Bordertown’s Zali Grosser - who both took to the Icehouse pine for the Southern Tigers. Led by a 28 point game from US import Amanda Frost, who also pulled in nine rebounds and seven assists, the Pioneers led by 11 points at three quarter time, the biggest lead of the match and while the visitors got to within four points with four minutes to play and again with 230 seconds to play, Olivia Wormald showed nerves of steel to close out the game from the charity stripe. Melissa Russell was again critical with 11 rebounds and her on court leadership, while Maddy Wormald (14 points) and Emily Winter (12 points) continue to grow every outing and loom as future stars of the competition. Emily Dawe’s tenacious style is also proving its worth on the Premier League court and the youngster is playing solid minutes. The men’s team also started their Icehouse season on a high, putting the foot down in the second half to secure a 108-99 victory. Scores were locked away at half time and much like the women’s game, where skipper Amanda Frost led from the front, men’s captain Tom Daly had a night out, scoring 40 points to go with his seven rebounds and seven assists. The skipper did not miss from three point territory and shot an impressive 71 percent from the floor. Sam Daly showed why the Pioneers were so keen to secure his services, with 23 points, five rebounds and six assists, while Dayjar Dickson had a 16 point, eight rebound game. When it came to the boards, Kentrell Barkley had no peer, pulling in 12 defensive rebounds and 14 in total. Under coach Richard Hill, the Pioneers have always enjoyed playing a fast paced game and not surprisingly, score 33 of their points on the fast break, while the Tigers could only manage 16. The lead was a many as 21 in the final stanza, before the Tigers surged late. Both Pioneers have another match free weekend this weekend before returning to the Icehouse on March 30 to take on the Norwood Flames.

Mick Waters opened the bowling and ended up with 0/10 from his nine overs Scoring was tough on day one of the 2018/19 Barber Shield final between Penola and North Gambier. Tight bowling from the Eagles attack made it tough for the Tigers but Jake Schutz dug in and batted for more than 60 overs. His untimely run out, combined with Nick McInerney's (pictured left) dismissal for obstructing the field, when he handled the ball, stymied any late scoring surge. Seeing a strong batting line-up battle to 149 from 74 overs showed scoring could well be tough in the run chase as well. HEAD SCRATCHING TRADE There have been some astonishing decisions made during this year’s American football (NFL) trade period. Some people joke that NFL actually stands for Not For Long instead of National Football League and it’s not hard to see why. Perhaps the most mind blowing trade was the New York Giants trade of star wide receiver Odell Beckham Junior to the Cleveland Browns. Few would dispute that Beckham is/was the Giants best player and many believe he is the top wide receiver in the game. One analyst even described Beckham as “one of the transcendent players to enter the league this decade.” At just 26 years of age he is in the absolute prime of his career and, in addition to being the Giants best player on the field, he would also be their most marketable player off the field.
Hall Trophy (Under 14 ) Trophy Winners - Bodey Hosking (North - Fielding); Harry Fisher (North - Bowling); Kaidyn Weber (Mil Lel - Player of the Year & Batting) & Toby McKinnon (Kongorong - Bowling)
I can’t wait for the follow up story where the New York Giants try to put a positive spin on how trading away their team’s best player in his prime was a good move for the franchise.
SIZE DOES MATTER While on the NFL I spotted a story on Australian born, former South Sydney Rabbitohs junior, Jordan Mailata, who is trying to make his mark with the Philadelphia Eagles. Standing at an imposing 203cm and weighing a whopping 157kgs, Mailata has been instructed that he still needs to put on more weight and get even bigger to be able to compete.
FROM RAGS TO RICHES Spots in the Australian team for the upcoming World Cup just got harder to get following Australia’s recent success against India. Many assumed that suspended players Steve Smith & David Warner would automatically reclaim their spots but back to back hundreds by Usman Khawaja and the form of other team members makes for some very tough decisions for selectors.

BEST & FAIREST BESTIES It would take some serious trawling through the record books but it would seem these two peas in a pod have created some history. Central player Dylan Chuck claimed his third successive division one best & fairest and Warriors’ Leyna Bruggemann has done the same in the Mount Gambier Softball League - both in the same three consecutive seasons. Next week’s Lifestyle1 will highlight all the baseball award winners. And while Chuck’s team did not contest the 2018/19 finals series, Bruggemann’s title defence is still on track with a preliminary win. RESULT Warriors Blue 13 (A. Queale 3; L Mullen, E. McDonald, L.
