It’s funny how things turn out. For Christy Radford, photography was her creative outlet but certainly not a career option. But nine years ago, an exhibition featuring her images saw her approached to capture her first ever wedding and the rest, as they say, is history. “Someone at the exhibition was getting married and asked me to do her wedding,” Christy said. So she joined forces with fellow photographer Kristy Janeway to capture that history making first wedding, and even then, Christy still had no idea how capturing one of the most special days in anyone’s life and other landmark occasions, were set to become her bread and butter, turning her hobby into a successful and rewarding career. Since that first wedding, Christy has now photographed too many to count but don’t think that means she is not completely interested in each couple’s special day. “I still get emotional at weddings, they are always so beautiful,” Christy said. “Funnily enough, most of my brides become really good friends and we stay in touch. I love that we have that connection.” And that connection is why Christy is so committed to those pre-wedding meetings she has with couples so she can not only get a handle on what they want from her on the big day but also just what sort of couple they are, their likes and dislikes, so she can capture their wedding in a very personal and unique way. “I want them involved in all the ideas and I want to understand what they are like so that the photos I take represent who they are as a couple,” she said. “Every wedding needs to be so personalised, especially for the guys, and it means you can add things in that are important to them, like a footy, or sharing a beer or playing golf. Because at the end of the day, those personal photos are the ones they are going to be put up on the wall and be the ones that mean the most to them.” Weddings are now the biggest slice of Christy’s burgeoning photography business, which also includes newborns, family portraits, event photography and corporate work. “I also love doing maternity, I guess because that’s such another special time in people’s lives,” Christy said. Every job provides its challenges but with almost a decade of experience under her belt, not much flusters the popular photographer. “There is always a way around it and sometimes you have to be patient and sometimes you have to think outside the square to find a solution,” she said. “Of course, things don’t always go to plan but there is always a way to make it work.” It will come as no surprise to anyone that when photographing lifestyle1.net | 04

a wedding, the boys are a lot more relaxed in the lead up, compared with the preparation shoot with the girls. “Mind you, the girls are also a lot more organised and I get through the photos quicker because when I get to the boys I often end up tying ties, putting buttonholes on and I’ve even done ironing before,” Christy said. “On the day, you might be the photographer but really you are just part of the day and sometimes have to be a jack of all trades.” Funnily enough, given how much of a wedding the photographer actually gets to see, Christy is often the most experienced person in the room. “I do keep an eye out for those little things people sometimes forget about – I try and be one step ahead,” she said. In reality, it is part of the job description for a photographer to have an eye for detail and that sees Christy always looking for that special or unique shot and you might be surprised

to find out what is one of her favourite images. “Often the most intense photo I take is the look on the groom’s face when the bride is walking down the aisle,” she said. And Christy has adapted to the kind if instant world we live in today where people just can’t wait for anything. She creates a slideshow from her wedding day shots which can then be shown at the reception and boasts an accompanying soundtrack - that is the kind of turnaround and service the modern day wedding photographer has to offer to remain competitive. “The reaction to this has been amazing and not just from the bride and groom but from grandparents and other guests as well,” Christy said. “I aim to get the slideshow up and running before the first dance.” Above - Christy Radford and some samples of her work at weddings.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH It wasn’t one of the songs used as a soundtrack to the MJ Dance Studio 30th anniversary concert but it arguably sums up the 30 year anniversary of the Mount Gambier studio – We Are Family, by Sister Sledge. Almost to a fault, every video message from former students, teachers and visiting choreographers, used the word family at least once – it is inescapable – the best thing about the hugely successful dance studio is becoming part of the MJ family. “My experience is (MJ) has always been like a second home,” MJ alumni, currently part of the Jersey Boys cast in Sydney, Cristina d’Agostino said. “It was a place where I learned so much and grew as a person and a performer.” And if MJ is family then its matriarch Maria Slape, has certainly shaped so

many lives. “Thanks for believing in me,” Cristina said. “I would never have got where I am without you.” Then there was fellow graduate Matt Cram, who after time in New York at the Joffrey Ballet and time on cruise ships, came “home” to head up MJ Dance Studio in Adelaide, established this year. He loved the MJ experience so much he is now back shaping a new generation of the MJ family. The studio director was keen for the 30th anniversary concert to be like no other and with so many of her graduates so busy working in the industry, Maria’s vision was a concert almost entirely choreographed by her graduates, interspersed with some of the best work of 2018, including a stunning solo performance by rising star Madi Lane. Jaylee Waters, Michaela Pace, Katarina

Gajic and the mesmerising Euan Doidge all took to the Sir Robert Helpmann stage as guest performers but the night was all about the current students bringing to life the work and vision of students from days gone by. “I really wanted to make it happen, to be able to be back here to celebrate with Maria,” Euan, arguably the studio’s most famous export, said. “This is where I got my start and I thought it was really important to be able to come back and say thank you by being a part of the celerbations.” Katarina Gajic, who is set to be the latest MJ alumni to head off shore for a career in Europe, summed up the sentiment of many. “I had some of the best years of my life at MJ, such a family to me,” she said. “It holds a special place in my heart. I made some amazing friendships and learned so much and

lifestyle1.net | 06

I will always be grateful. I wouldn’t be where I am today without you Maria. You inspired me to go down this pathway.” The first student to exit stage right from MJ and head full time into the dance industry, as a teacher, choreographer and producer, Daniel Ryan, also looked back on his time at the, then, fledgling, dance studio, fondly. “It created a lifelong love of dance in me,” he said. And while Maria was aware of the tributes from her past students and teachers, including Christine Whales, her own family had also recorded messages in secret, Including her mother Margaret Reichelt, who is an institution in highland dancing in this region, reminding her daughter she still has another 30 years to go to match her mother’s longevity. “As a little girl you only ever wanted to have dance shoes on,” her mother said. “You’ve made a wonderful success of your dancing career.” Father, Tony, was also full of pride. “You have proved to be one of Australia’s best and I’m very, very proud of you.” Son, Nick Jenkin, appreciated, if nothing else, the chance to travel regularly to the Gold Coast for dance competitions, while daughter Christina Jenkin, who works wide by side as a senior teacher at the studio, also heaped praise on her inspirational mother. Speaking from Las Vegas, where she has secured her dream job, working with Cirque De Soleil, Kiana De Van Der Schueren was also happy to reflect on her time at MJ. “I know I wouldn’t be there without my MJ family,” she said. “Thank you for being such an amazing support network.” Sister Symiko also values what it means to be part of the MJ family. “I love the support I still have from them,” Symiko said. With similar sentiments coming from Maddy Macera. “I feel very

honoured to be a part of MJ Studio.” Following the Friday night and Saturday afternoon concerts, the studio celebrated with a cocktail party on Saturday night, with plenty of former students, parents and teachers returning to toast the successful studio, while Sunday saw a Family Fun Day held at the Rail Lands. Above - MJ Dance Studio’s most famous graduate Euan Doidge returned to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage with a powerful vocal performance. AT A GLANCE

STUDENTS TACKLE ENVIRONMENTAL & SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES Five local students have represented the region as environmental ambassadors on the Youth Environment Council for South Australia. Throughout the year, Jocelyn Work, from Mil Lel Primary School, Abby Tansell, from Mulga Street Primary School, Alice Tentye and Amber Thompson, from Glencoe Central Primary School, and Connor Perry, from Keith Area School, have met with the group of 60 student representatives from across the State to talk sustainability and leadership. Now in its 20th year, the Youth Environment Council (YEC) of South Australia is a joint initiative of the Department for Environment and the Department for Education, and provides young people with a voice in key environmental issues and encourages them to take action. Keith Area School YEC representative Connor Perry has enjoyed the experience connecting with likeminded people. “My favourite part of YEC has been making friends I wouldn’t have

met if it wasn’t for the program,” Connor said. “I’m particularly interested in recycling and decomposition of different materials, so at school I’ve been working with younger kids to make newspaper plant pots. I’ve learnt a lot being on YEC and have developed leadership skills from being a mentor.” The group of local YEC representatives spoke at the South East Natural Resources Management Board’s recent Young Environmental Leaders Program forum at the Naracoorte Caves, giving students an insight into what it’s like to represent youth voice at a state level, and what they had learnt so far. The entire YEC group of 60 students met for a final time last month for the Annual Sharing Forum at Cleland National Park to showcase the projects they have been working on. Connor is already keen to pass on his experience to others. “I will use what I’ve learnt to teach a new generation of kids to make the world a more sustainable place,” he said. LIFE SAVING DONATION TO COAST GUARD Thanks to United Way Glenelg, Portland Coast Guard has added a new tool to their rescue kit with the purchase of a RESQUE- MAX rope line throwing device, which is also equipped with an auto-inflatable personal flotation sling. Coast Guard Portland undertakes around 40 to 50 marine rescues of stranded water craft and the boats occupants each year. Most of the Coast Guards work involves towing stranded vessels back to the safety of the Port of Portland, while less frequent activities include; Medical Evacuations at sea, and SAR (Search & Rescue) operations. Peter Starick, Flotilla Commander for Coast Guard Portland said the rescues involve locating stranded vessels. “Once we locate vessels requiring assistance, our boat has to come along side close enough for our crew to manually throw a line to the stranded vessel,” he said. “Getting close enough in heavy sea conditions can be hazardous and the new RESQUE-MAX line throwing device allows us to stand off at a safe distance and propel a light line up to

100 metres to the stranded vessel; then allowing for its crew to retrieve the heavier tow line across to their boat.” The new kit also includes a RESQUEMAX auto inflating personal flotation ring, which can be propelled around 100 metres to a person in the water, often used in circumstances where a person is too close to shore or rocks, for the coast guard vessel to get close enough. United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr said the safety of volunteers should always be the primary concern for organisations who are working in the emergency services sector. “We’re pleased to support the unsung volunteers of water safety,” she said. “We want to make sure our volunteers at the end of the day are able to go home to their family and friends safely.” Coast Guard Portland is part of the National Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association. Local members train weekly to maintain their skills, and the organisation is committed to creating a safer & more resilient recreational boating community. Members are unpaid volunteers and the rescue services are free of charge. Monies for the United Way Glenelg Community Fund come from workplace giving campaigns, individual donations and donations from companies throughout the Glenelg Shire. If you’re interested in making a regular donation through United Way Glenelg’s workplace giving program please contact Nicole Carr at mail@ unitedwayglenelg.com.au Above - Brad Norman, Shirley Stanford, Rodney McCreddan & Joan Stanford. TEMPT THE TASTEBUDS

Gluten free sweet potato rolls 600g gold sweet potato 1 tbs olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 1 tbs Moroccan Seasoning 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 bunch spinach 400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained

100g feta, crumbled 600g pkt Gluten Free Puff Pastry Sheets 1 tsp sesame seeds 1 tsp poppy seed

Method Preheat oven to 220°C. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Place sweet potato in a saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to the boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium. Cook for 15 mins or until sweet potato is soft. Drain. Set aside for 15 mins to cool. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a small frying pan over high heat. Cook the onion, stirring, for 3 mins or until soft. Add the Moroccan seasoning and garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 min or until fragrant. Transfer to a bowl. Add spinach to frying pan. Place over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 1-2 mins or until spinach wilts. Transfer to a plate. Set aside to cool slightly. Squeeze excess liquid from spinach. Finely chop. Add sweet potato and chickpeas to onion mixture. Use a fork to mash until combined. Add spinach and fetta and stir to combine. Divide into 6 portions. Place 1 pastry half on a clean work surface. Shape 1 portion of sweet potato mixture into a log. Place along long edge of pastry half. Spray opposite edge with olive oil spray. Roll up pastry to enclose filling. Spray with olive oil spray. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds and poppy seeds. Cut into 6 pieces. Place, seam-side down, on lined trays. Repeat with remaining sweet potato portions, pastry halves, sesame seeds and poppy seeds. Bake for 20 mins or until golden brown.

IN THE GARDEN This will be my last In the Garden segment for 2018 and it has certainly come around rather too fast for my liking. With the late/non-existent spring, and patchy weather ever since, I don’t think the plants know what to do either. With not too many sleeps left to Christmas it’s time to head down to Gardenarium for their 25–70% off pre-Christmas sale. You can still layby now for Christmas and leave picking up until Christmas Eve if you wish, especially plants. The farmyard and corrals are full again with an array of pigs, sheep, cows and chooks, right through to our metal oil drum animals that are intricately made by AIDS affected orphan children in Zimbabwe that are now half price to clear. The Limestone Coast Roses and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees part of the company is also as full as ever, even with the strange weather, and we have up to 50% off trees until Christmas Eve, including mop tops and weeping cherries. Roses, such as Mother’s Love and Grandma and Grandpa’s Rose, are all good gift ideas, along with a huge range of standard roses. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without hydrangeas and we have masses of stunning mature plants in all colours, ranging from intense blue, to purple, red, pinks and whites, as well as the new release dwarf varieties. These are ideal indoors for a short time, as decorations to your outside entertaining areas or as a fantastic Christmas gift. This year we have increased the numbers of trees in most categories, especially mop top style and weeping trees, which you

Taylor Marine lifestyle1.net | 28

By Calum Haygarth Landscape Architect & Horticultural Consultant just can’t get enough of. Cherries and blueberries are popular eating choices over Christmas as well as our recently released Dwarf Mulberry, so why not give these as a gift, we have the new everbearing Aussie blueberry, that has just been released too. Curry leaf trees, Fiddle Leafed Figs and the popular Tractor Seat plants are marching out the door along with String of Pearls and Chain of Hearts in hanging baskets and we have increased our range of on trend indoor plants hugely and if you are quick you might just get one of the Chinese Money Plants that are so hard to get at the moment and command ridiculous prices on line. Wollemi Pines are back again after a long drought and are ideal to decorate for Christmas trees for a short time indoors, for outdoors on the patio or to plant in the garden as a living fossil. The gift shop is bursting with ideas for the gardeners and non gardener alike, with outdoor clocks, all sorts of china jardinière’s and pots, terrariums, some intricately made garden art in metal made out of all sorts of old tools and welded together giving unique and interesting one offs. Gardenarium is well known for its range of birdhouses and feeders and this year is no exception with three new ranges on offer, the Gumnut Range is made in SA and crafted from treated pine and then burned and adorned with gumnuts and native seed pods and cones, ideal for native birds, even one in the shape of an outside dunny (see advert opposite page) as well as some colourful metal and timber

birdhouses, dovecotes and, of course, birdbaths, all of which you can see on our website.www,gardenarium.com.au Our range of outdoor furniture has been added to this season with the introduction of ceramic outdoor dining tables in natural and grey wood look, along with an expansion to our teak outdoor table ranges and traditional teak outdoor garden benches in two styles and even high pressure laminate from Belgium in crisp white and a new matt grey on a teak frame with stunning teak and batyline and a few new aluminium sling chairs, a must for the beach house or ultra modern home. See the website (some items still to be added) for all our outdoor furniture lines in travertine stone, ceramic and teak, as well as our real wicker relaxing coffee settings, rocking chairs and couches for the patio or sunroom. For many years Gardenarium and The Limestone Coast Group has supported the villagers along the coastlines of the Philippines hit four years in a row, with many of the villagers not even having built new homes from the last typhoon when yet another one has hit. Many of the products we sell are from poor, underdeveloped countries and, in particular, the range of driftwood creations we have each year are from pieces of driftwood harvested from the beaches by local villagers in the current typhoon hit areas. Each village is allowed to harvest a certain amount of driftwood thrown up from the typhoons and craft them into the wonderful pieces we sell, from Christmas decorations to spheres, planters and decorative wreathes, and a brand new range of birdhouses in several styles - see our newly upgraded website for all of the styles. I am continually amazed at their creativity given the adversity. I urge everyone to dig deep this Christmas by buying a piece of driftwood artwork or ornaments that will last forever. They are extremely well priced considering the transportation and shipping to us and we feel warm knowing that the proceeds are helping the villagers rebuild their lives. Items start from very low priced Christmas stars at only $9, so ideal for a Kris Kringle, with even the more intricate piece really far too low priced for the work involved, especially for the western world. Managers and staff at Gardenarium & The Limestone Coast Group of Companies would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and readers a very Happy Christmas and relaxing New Year. We will be closing from Christmas Eve until January 2 for a well earned break with our families and hope you can all wait until then to see us again.

In partnership with the Compost Revolution, Council is offering residents free online training and discounted composting kits to recycle their food scraps at home instead of sending them to landfill. “According to our last household waste audit, more than 44 per cent of Mount Gambier’s rubbish bins consist of compostable waste and most of that is food waste,” City of Mount Gambier Environmental Sustainability Officer Aaron Izzard said. “This represents a

significant cost to the community and a lost opportunity to recover valuable organic nutrients that can be used to green our gardens and farms.” Council hopes at least 180 households will engage with the program offering all city residents 50 per cent off a compost bin, compost tumbler, worm farm or bokashi bin. or more information about the program, the products on offer and a step-by-step online tutorial, visit the Compost Revolution website www.compostrevolution.com.au “Purchases are limited to one per address in order for as many Mount Gambier residents to be involved as possible. The offer is for a limited time only, so residents are encouraged to get in quick to secure their discounted composting product,” Mr Izzard said.

MAJOR ROAD RECONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY IN NARACOORTE The first stage of reconstruction of Old Caves Road, Naracoorte has been commenced by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council. The Old Caves Road links Naracoorte to the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves, a key tourism destination for South Australia and the region. Due to this linkage the Old Caves Road has been identified by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council and the Limestone Coast Local Government Association as an important regional tourism route in need of upgrading so the road is suitable for tourism traffic. “Once completed the Old Caves Road will be an important link from Naracoorte to the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves,” Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery OAM said. “Ensuring Old Caves Road is suitable for tourism traffic, such as caravans and recreational vehicles (RVs), means visitor can be directed through the Naracoorte Town Centre and then via the Old Caves Road to the Naracoorte Caves, rather than travelling along the Riddoch Highway. This offers the opportunity of significant added benefit to the Naracoorte Town Centre with visitors stopping for a refreshment or to explore other parts of town they may not have considered. This project also supports the Naracoorte Caves Connection Concept Statement which highlights the importance of the Naracoorte Caves and the Naracoorte Town being well connected to increase economic benefit to Naracoorte.” The project being undertaken by the Naracoorte Lucindale Council is a significant reconstruction of the road. The section of Old Caves Road from Caves Road to 3.8km north towards Naracoorte is closed to all traffic. Alternate routes are via Riddoch Highway to Caves Road or Langkoop Road to Caves Road. The Naracoorte Lucindale Council secured a $618,000 grant from the Special Local Roads Program, supplementing the Stage 1 project cost of $1.27 million. Old Caves Road starts at Arthur Street in Naracoorte and finishes at the intersection with Caves Road. This section of reconstruction is Stage 1 of a three stage project. It’s anticipated Stage 1 will be completed by the middle of February. Stages 2 and 3 are scheduled for construction in 2019/2020 and 2020/21, respectively, subject to continued funding.

ANOTHER AWARD FOR TRAVEL AGENT Naracoorte Travel n Cruise was officially recognised as one of Australia’s top 30 elite travel retailers earlier this month after taking out a Bronze Choice Award at the Travellers Choice Annual Shareholders Conference held in Cairns. Attended by owners Kate Harvey, Greg Close and office manager Therese Oliver, the Naracoorte business was recognised among an exclusive collection of almost 200 of Australia’s leading independently-owned travel agencies. The award win is something the whole team has worked towards over the past 12 months, so to receive the ultimate recognition is something of which the team is very proud. Although Kiara Silvester couldn’t be there to help celebrate, as she was holding down the fort solo, her addition to the team has been instrumental to the office’s success over the past 12 months. Naracoorte Travel n Cruise’s expertise, sales performance and commitment to supporting and growing their cruise, small group adventures and overall leisure market is clearly evident as they continue to go from strength to strength. Their support of local events and various sporting groups is complemented by their amazing ever growing client support, which, without entrusting the team with creating their next amazing holiday adventure, ultimate success would not be possible. Naracoorte Travel n Cruise co-owner Kate Harvey said all the awards were an amazing team effort, with all staff at the travel agency dedicated to continually enhancing their skills and delivering

the highest quality customer service, as their clients testify. “Our agents combine extensive travel experience and product knowledge means they provide an unrivalled understanding of our client’s needs, and consistently over deliver on service, price and more importantly the clients experience, said Ms Harvey “Ultimately that is what stands our agency apart from competitors. Travellers Choice Business Development Manager SA Andrea Moore congratulated the agency on its win. “This is a reward for which the staff of Naracoorte Travel n Cruise along with the people of Naracoorte and surrounding community can be rightly proud, Ms Moore said. The award win includes a $500 marketing grant and an all expenses paid trip to Perth, Rottnest Island and Gold Class Indian Pacific, Perth to Sydney, valued at around $6000, departing in April.

A new book about the adventurous life of local surfing legend and former gun shearer, Steve Woolston, will be released at special events in Robe and

Keith this month. Finding Steve’s Place has been written and is being self-published by best-selling author and former Mount Gambier resident, Liz Harfull, to coincide with the 50th anniversary year of the Robe Easter Surfing Classic, founded by Steve. But according to Liz, the book is about a lot more than surfing. “Steve Woolston would never describe himself as famous, but it’s fair to say that he’s a legend in certain circles, and he has some extraordinary and humorous stories to tell, Liz said. “In fact, one of the things that drew me to writing the book is that Steve has led a diverse and often surprising life, which cuts across some fascinating moments in time. “Many people, including members of his own family, are going to be astonished at some of his adventures and the characters he has come across along the way, including his years

working as a shearer, and some spells in the outback. “This book has also given me the chance to write about the pioneering AMP Land Development Scheme which transformed huge areas of the Ninety Mile Desert in the Upper South East into productive farming land in the 1950s. “Steve’s father was among the men recruited to work on the scheme, and he moved the whole family from suburban Adelaide to Brecon station near Keith, where they lived in a steel hut for five years. It was a terrible trial for his mum, Shirley, but a boy’s own adventure for Steve who was eight when they arrived. After leaving school, Steve trained as a shearer, working mainly in the Upper South East and the Adelaide Hills. In his mid 20s, he also spent time in the Great Sandy and Gibson deserts, working with a gravity survey crew. Then in the mid 1960s he discovered surfing, which led him to Robe, where he established a surf shop, Steve’s Place, and the surfing competition, believed to be the second-oldest continuously running surfing competition in the world. “I didn’t know all that much about surfing when I started interviewing Steve, but what became quickly apparent is that his life and experiences intersect with some of the greatest moments and the most famous names in Australian surfing., Liz said. “As one of his mates told me, every day something funny or interesting happened, just because it did! Steve calls it a voyage of discovery, and it truly was, including a surfing accident that almost cost him his life. Finding Steve’s Place is the author’s eighth book, and the first she has selfpublished. She has written two previous books about Robe - Almost an Island: the story of Robe, released by Wakefield Press in 2013, and Guichen Bay and the Chinese Landings, which was commissioned last year by the District Council of Robe. Finding Steve’s Place will be launched by former Mount Gambier ABC presenter Lucy Richards in the Robe Institute at 2pm on Saturday, December 15. The book’s release will also be celebrated at Keith, where Steve now lives, on Tuesday, December 18, at 6pm at the Keith Hotel. Books will be available at both events for sale (cash only), and for signing by both Liz and Steve. After the launch, books will be available for purchase from select shops in the South East and Western Victoria, including Steve’s Place at Robe. SCHEIDL HOLDS HIS NERVE TO WIN SHOOT OFF

SUMMER TIME BLUES The Australian Cricket team has really struggled in recent times. The quick and easy explanation is that the poor performances are due to the suspension and subsequent unavailability of star players Steve Smith & David Warner but it appears that the standard of cricket in Australia has been decreasing for a fair while now. I recall the ‘good old days’ when the Sheffield Shield was a formidable competition and there appeared to be vast depth for positions in the Australian team. It just seems that less and less people are playing cricket. Certainly, on a local level there appears to be far fewer teams than there was 20 years ago at a club level and the Whitty trophy, an inter-town competition which used to attract the best cricketers in the region has died. There was nothing better, back in the day, than a leisurely afternoon in the sun on the Frew Park hill watching the batsmanship of a Robbie Ellis or Dale Bateman, the all-round skills of Darren Gray and the terrifying speed of Mark Somerfield.

Near perfect weather conditions for sporting clays greeted the 76 shooters that nominated for the annual Sage Martiensen Memorial Shoot. Richard Sage was on hand to present the sashes to “Off the Gun” team winners Ernie Scheidl, Leigh Dunn, Steven Scheidl and Wendel Litchfield whilst the Handicap team of Declan Wright and the Rossouw family of Alan, Fletcher & Carter got the sash. Course setter Ken Atkin again used the semi old style sporting layout over the three courses for the 75 target event sponsored by Fennell Forestry. Jeremy Kent and Ernie Scheidl, who both earned a possible 25 badge, were tied on 71/75 and needed a shoot off to determine the Gambier Shooting supplies High Gun. Scheidl prevailed to take the honours. Kent duly took out AA grade from Gavin Dyson 70/75 with Daniel Ashby third on 69/75. Andrew Green won A grade with 67/75 whilst it took a shoot off between Steven Scheidl and Brian Shelton to determine second & third, making it a good day for

the Scheidl family, Steven duly won that shoot off as well. B grade shooter Heath Telford dominated to win by six targets with65/75, minor placings taken up by Dale Smith and Wendel Litchfield. Doug Rohde made a welcome return to claim the C grade honours ahead of Alan Rossouw and Dwayne Bell. Seniors was won by Neville Kent shooting 63/75 from Wayne Evans and Robert Clark. The experienced John Monaghan won Veterans with 65/75 from Chris VonStanke Snr and Bob Jones in third. Vicki Fabris shot well enough in the shoot off to edge out Nicola Harradine to claim honours in the Ladies category from Emma Lawford in third. Declan Wright took out the sub juniors with 55/75 from Fletcher Rossouw and Brodie VonStankeDowie Upcoming Event Christmas Shoot • Sunday, December 16 • 50 Target event • 20 target Side X Side • Champion of Champions Shoot off Above - High Gun winner Ernie Scheidl (right) with sponsor Dane Hastings. Below (top row) - Sponsor Graeme Fennell with AA podium Jeremy Kent, Gavin Dyson & Daniel Ashby Below (centre) - Sage Martiensen OTG Team winners, Ernie Scheidl, Leigh Dunn, Steven Scheidl & Wendel Litchfield with sponsor Richard Sage (left). Cricket isn’t the only summer sport that appears to be struggling for numbers in the South East. Tennis numbers have dwindled to the extent that they have reduced the number of players per side to constitute what makes an A grade team. Softball is another summer sport that no longer enjoys the numbers of days gone by. The big question is why? So more people have to work on weekends today? Are we too time poor to spare a Saturday afternoon on a sporting field? Or are we less active today than yesteryear?

THE MAN The recent retirement of Anthony Mundine after his loss by knockout to Jeff Horn will not upset too many people with his words and actions not endearing himself to many but it should not be forgotten that Mundine was both a State of Origin level rugby league player before switching to boxing, where he held world titles. Very few sports people have enjoyed such a high level of success in multiple sports.

MOUNT GAMBIER & DISTRICT BASEBALL LEAGUE Round 10 of the Mount Gambier and District Baseball League’s Division One competition saw Centrals continue their run of good form with a comfortable victory over Federals, while in the late game Tigers broke a nil all deadlock in the seventh innings to earn a narrow victory over South Indians. Federals took an early lead scoring single runs in each of the first two innings. Centrals levelled the score in the bottom of the second with Mark Kilpatrick and Josh Aston both scoring on Brad Lynagh’s double to centrefield. After a scoreless third innings, Centrals opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth. Three consecutive hits combined with four errors by Federals fielders saw Centrals push three runs across the plate. Federals scored two runs in the top of the sixth to only trail by one run, but Centrals countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the seventh. The ten to four score at the bottom of the seventh remained as the final score with neither side able to score in the final innings. Centrals batters collected thirteen hits for the game with Dylan Chuck and Lachlan Ridding leading the way with three each while Federals found it tough against the pitching of Lachie Tilley and Josh Aston managing only six hits for the game. The late game between South Indians and Tigers was a battle of the defences with pitchers Brodie Foster for Tigers and South’s Bruce Morale dominating the batters for a large part of the game. It took until the top of the seventh innings for the first run to be scored. Tiger’s Matt Thompson got on first with an infield single, stole second and then scored on Ben Marcus’ single to centrefield. Tigers doubled their lead in the eighth with Brayden Morton scoring on a Brodie Foster single. Foster was able to complete the shutout with a final score line 2 to nil in Tigers favour. South didn’t make the most of opportunities early in the game, leaving nine runners stranded on base in the first five innings and it was only late in the game that Tigers looked the better team. Bruce Morale did a fine job on the mound for South and it was only in the final three innings that Tigers were able to consistently put pressure on the South defence, with six of their eight hits coming in these innings. While South failed to score for their second game in a row, their one shining light was first baseman Dean Hamilton who collected four of South’s five hits. TWO TIGHT CONTESTS IN WEEKEND ROUND OF SOFTBALL Concordes White put in a strong performance against rivals Wanderers, in a tightly contested match from start to finish. Concordes got off the mark immediately, taking advantage of a couple of errors to score Jo Hopgood on safe hits from Chelsea Fowler and Leonie McCallum. Wanderers replied in the second innings with two runs of their own, and it was all tied up until Linda Dodds batted in Fowler to break the deadlock. Wanderers were not done however, and a second two bagger for the day from Cathy whiting gave them two more runs and the lead. It was however to be short lived as Concordes scored three runs on four safe hits, highlighted by a beautiful three bagger by the in form Sam Brown. Brown also pitched well to control the big batters for Wanderers, and Concordes kept it very tight in the field, only committing three errors for the entire game and making some heads up plays. Whiting pitched well for Wanderers and Fiona Finch was ever reliable at short stop. Chelsea Fowler had her best game of the season so far for Concordes, fielding very well and hitting safely at timely moments. In the end Concordes ran out deserved 6-4 winners. RESULTS Concordes White 6 (C. Fowler, L. Dodds, L. McCallum 2; J. Hopgood, S. Brown, S. Pilven) d Wanderers 4 (C. Whiting 2; F. Finch, E. Hart, T. Seager, T. Tzioutziouklaris); Demons 13 (M. Millard, C. Manning, M. Millard, I. Morale 2; A. Livingston, R. Mathers, M. Markiewicz, K. Morale) d Concordes United 3 (D. Jones, B. Jones, T. Jones, M. Sutherland, B. Miller); Warriors White 12 (J. Hillman 3; E. Chaplin 2; T. Pearson, C. Chaplin, E. Hann, D. Wombwell) d Warriors Blue 11 (L. Bruggemann, S. McDonald 3; R Sneath, E. Hartung-Gleeson, L Mullen) Right - Concordes White’s Sam Brown was impressive on the mound, as well as securing a crucial safehit in her side’s two run win over Wanderers

CRICKET REPRESENTATIVE SEASON HEATS UP The Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association is set to play its first representative match of the 2018/19 season with the annual inter-association clash with Portland. The Victorian association is host of the 2018 clash, which is this Sunday. The Mount Gambier side will be skippered by North Gambier top order batsman and reigning Bill Whitty Medallist Jake Schutz and boasts a wealth of experience. Outback representative and fellow Tiger Matt McInerney brings class to the top order, as does fellow young gun West’s Jake Blackwell. There is also a wealth of experienced allrounders through the middle that can do damage with bat and ball, with Dylan Clough (South); Dave Somerfield (Penola), Michael Waters (Penola) and Robbie Drenthen (South). The pace of North’s Declan Kenny, the smarts of Penola’s Jack Mullan’s spin and one of the competition’s rising stars, Sam Willis, who can also be classed as an alrounder, round out a star studded squad. Josh Thompson, who is fresh from taking a couple of outstanding catches in the regional T20 finals, will take the gloves.

Boasting almost 6000 members, the Country Women’s Association of Victoria celebrated its 90th anniversary at an event hosted by the Dunkeld branch, on behalf of all the Henty district branches last month. Formed on March 12, 1928, the vibrant, selffunded philanthropic organisation of women supporting women, children and families right across Victoria opted for a high tea to mark the milestone. It was a trip down memory lane as 90 years of community service was celebrated and while there is still plenty of cooking and craft as part of CWA activities, the organisation is as relevant as even and has enjoyed a resurgence in Victoria with many young women signing on to be part of their local branch. The Dunkeld and District Branch is a prime example in this shift in demographics, with an average age in the mid-30s. The branch started up again a few years ago by some passionate local ladies, and though there have been challenges, it's currently going from strength to strength, with an increasing membership and more locals attending meals, workshops and events. Each branch provided a delicious treat for the high tea and there was plenty of entertainment, including historic memorabilia, a celebration of fashion through the decades,

and some musical performances. The event was free to attend and open to any past, present and future members of the CWA who wanted to connect with others across the district or learn more about becoming involved. PARTICIPATING HENTY BRANCHES Burswood; Byaduk; Dunkeld and District; Glenelg; Hamilton; Hawkesdale; Heywood; Koroit; Port Fairy; Wattle Hill Creek & Woolsthorpe Above - Out-going President Stacey Barnes, with incoming co-presidents Caroline Coggins & Georgia Holden Above (bottom) Ella Kerr & Selena Black, two of the youngest members present, from Glenelg Branch.

Carlin & Gazzard has been a market leader for more than six decades by adhering to some simple business principles and giving customers what they want has been front and centre of the car industry giant’s operation. That is why the Commercial Street East dealership decided to take on an industry new kid on the block – LDV, a brand that is part of SAIC, the biggest auto manufacturer in China. “We had a lot of people coming into the yard looking for a dual cab for around $35,000 they were getting a five or six year old vehicle that already had 100,000kms on it,” sales manager Chris Hann said. “With LDV we could offer them a new vehicle with a five year warranty.” It has proved to be a masterstroke with more and more commercial clients jumping on board to secure one of the LDV range, which is proving to be reliable as well as affordable. “It was a risk because we didn’t know much about LDV, it’s

only been around since October last year, but we have had no issues and the feedback from customers has been great – it has been very well received,” Chris said. “We already have clients that have purchased one and have committed to buying more as they update their fleet.” From lawnmowing services to couriers, from the man on the land to tradies, LDV is finding a fan base and it is only growing as word spreads. “Word of mouth has been important because it’s such a new brand,” Chris said.

“We needed people to buy them and use them and then tell their friends about it and that’s what’s happening.” And the good news is, the people that are now LDV converts are people that are racking up tens of thousands of kilometres a year, so they are really testing the reliability and durability of the vehicles. Lake City Transport is one of those LDV convert (see above) and given the kilometres they rack up with their regionwide deliveries, that is as good a testament as any.
