an award and I started to think a career as a professional musician might have passed me by,” Scott said. “That’s actually when I decided to become a teacher, which was something I had wanted to do since I was quite young.” The band was The Superjesus, a band for which Scott had unsuccessfully auditioned, but now he could still claim that ARIA courtesy of his rise to being one of four finalists for Music Teacher of the Year. “I actually feel like I have already won,” Scott said. “To get this far through the process and to have my work analysed and people to recognise it is having an impact is amazing. From now, it is a popularity contest.” And that’s where the Mount Gambier community can get involved by voting, every day, for the Grant High School teacher, over the next 40-plus days before voting closes on November 21. In true Scott Maxwell form, he intends to make this voting campaign fun and he will upload a guitar riff to his Instagram account every day as a friendly reminder to lodge your vote. A teacher for 15 years, including stints at Reidy Park School and a gig for two years in the APY Lands, and at Grant High School for the past decade, Scott’s nomination was confirmed by a school visit on September 25 from Australian singer-songwriter Guy Sebastian. Aside from Scott and school principal Fleur Roachock, no one knew Sebastian was set to visit the school

with the appearance of TV cameras blamed on an education department
production. Scott’s music students had been working on a rendition of Sebastian’s hit Battle Scars, as well as reliving the 2017 school production Spectrum, with recess time rehearsals, again, as part of this education department video. Needless to say when Sebastian emerged from backstage to join the students performing Battle Scars, the looks on their faces and all the school’s music students, who had been invited to the performance, was priceless. “It was a great prank,” Scott said. “The amazing thing was, though, they just kept going and didn’t miss a beat, in fact, the performance lifted. Even Guy was impressed that they weren’t fazed and just kept going.” Guy also worked with four of the music program’s student songwriters and got a taste of the 2017 musical during the whirlwind visit. Talented vocalist Gajanan Frost, who was in danger of missing the special visit due to having his wisdom teeth removed, was fortunate enough to play one of his original compositions for Sebastian, while Brianna Scanlon also aired an original work – this first time anyone but Scott had heard the piece. “She could hardly believe Guy Sebastian was sitting there accompanying her on the piano,” Scott said. cont. page 8

COLLECTED STUPIDITY - LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM A GRUMPY OLD MAN… By ROBBIE TANSEL I think it’s happened. I knew it would probably happen one day, but I didn’t expect it quite yet. I thought maybe it might still be a few years away. You
never know when it’s going to happen, I guess. The point is, it’s happened now, and I’ve just got to live with it. I’ve become a grumpy old man.
My father recently was talking about one of his friends and was commenting that his friend had gotten grumpy since he turned seventy. Dad explained that’s what happens when you turn seventy. My dad is not seventy yet which left me commenting, “So this is positive, upbeat Dad?! Are you telling me that you’re going to get worse than this?!” I really need to find some time to start doing some research on the old age facilities around town. While I’m not seventy, I think I might have developed early onset grumpy old man syndrome. I knew that it had happened when I was having regular urges to write letters to the editor about things that previously I would have been fine with. Let me explain. Let’s start with g-string bikinis. You know, a bikini that a woman wears to the beach, where the bottom part of the bikini has the material revealing most of their backside. Now I like a woman’s butt as much as the next man. I’m just not convinced that women should be showing their whole butt in public. Or on

that soft-porn website/app Instagram. Let’s be clear, I don’t think that a man should be showing his butt in public either. If men started doing that, I’m pretty convinced there’d be uproar. Like I said, if you’re comfortable with people seeing your butt, good for you, but I’m not convinced that my children Shaquille and Lebron should be confronted with that when they go to the beach to collect shells and build sand castles. I’m not convinced that it sends a great message to men and boys either. I think it’s great to be comfortable with your body, but I just wonder if there becomes a point where it’s inappropriate to show certain parts of your body. I can’t imagine I would have been feeling that way about this issue before I became a grumpy old man. The next thing that has me wanting to complain to the media watchdog is swearing on reality television. These shows like the Block or Masterchef are on in primetime television and are often popular with younger viewers. Now I
know the swearing is beeped out so you don’t actually hear the words, but I think everyone knows the people are using naughty words. I’m not silly, I know that young people hear these words at school, and I think that our attitude as a society has changed somewhat towards swearing. But I still think we should have some standards when it comes to foul language. I don’t think that children should be getting the message from television that whenever you’re frustrated, you drop a few magic words. I don’t think people who drop one of these words in each of their sentences sound like nice, intelligent people. I think it’s important we teach young people to use language that is appropriate to the context you’re in. You don’t swear in front of children or old people. But this is exactly what these television shows are doing. There are plenty of children and old people watching these shows. Love Island, the Bachelor, and reality shows of their style do a great job of combining both of my grumpy old men complaints with the way the participants dress, talk, and act in general. Again my big criticism would be the messages these shows send to people, particularly young people, in this case about how you build a relationship. I’ll finish my grumpy old men complaints talking about donuts and milkshakes. At what point did it become necessary to cover/fill/dominate every milkshake and donut with a couple of chocolate bars, and any other sweet treat you can find laying around? What was wrong with blending milk, icecream and chocolate topping to make a milkshake? Nothing. It was pretty darn good, as long as you got enough topping in there. What was wrong with donuts of two varieties? Round, with a hole, dipped in cinnamon and sugar or round and filled with jam. I’m also prepared to accept a donut with chocolate icing, and even some 100s and 1000s if you want to get a bit wild. Why do we need to crush up a cherry ripe, put salt in caramel, cover it with whipped cream, put four biscuits on the top and skewer it with a giant lollipop? It makes me so angry. Come on people! Don’t mess with the classics! A milkshake is a liquid. It shouldn’t have crunchy elements. A donut should be dough. I think the “nut” part of the word donut refers to there being NUThing other than the dough. Don’t even get me started on steakhouse or beer battered fries. Anyway, I’m assuming there’s some sort of support group for grumpy old men, so if you email me at robbietansel@gmail.com I can get along to the next meeting. We can all write letters to the editor together.

ARIA NOMINATION FOR INSPIRING TEACHER From page 4 He first heard about the ARIA teaching award last year, the first year is was part of the ARIA Awards scheme, but it wasn’t until this year that he was nominated and then chose to take on the 1000-plus applicants by going through the paperwork. “I had to put my story together and that was really interesting,” he said. “I got to reflect on what I do and it put in perspective what I do with the kids. It is definitely not the same as a lot of music teachers. I do have a unique approach to teaching. I think that’s due to my background in rock music. I became a teacher because I wanted to play a part in people’s lives. We always remember our teachers. You never forget those moments you have and the teachers who make you feel good. I wanted to be that positive influence.” So he sat the mature age test to get into university and is now staring an ARIA in the face. Since the age of 10, Scott has been hooked on music. “Ever since my dad taught me some riffs on the guitar I have been completely immersed in music,” Scott said. “And I’ve always been into creating music.” And that’s one reason why Scott and colleague Mike Bakker have created their own school musicals and are currently working on original musical number three, set for production in 2019. “Working with Mike has been absolutely fabulous,” Scott said. “Sparks just fly when we get together. It is great for kids to see us working together and to
experience that creative environment.” The past decade has also seen Scott build the Grant High School music program into a vibrant subject, attracting plenty of student interest and now commanding a subject line of its own. “I do feed off the enthusiasm of the kids,” Scott said. “It is easy to be passionate when the kids are so enthusiastic and get so involved and we have a lot of talent in our performers at the moment.” A key part of Scott’s submission to the ARIA Awards was community engagement and that includes not only the original school musicals, but the cooperative community events the music department runs in conjunction with the drama and hospitality students and the hugely popular Wild Winter’s Night which was established this year and looks set to be a regular event. “That’s just another way to bring the community in to see what we’re doing,” Scott said. To vote for Scott head to www.ariamusicteacheraward.com.au The ARIA Awards will be presented on October 28. Left (top) - Grant High School student Brianna Scanlon shares her own composition with Guy Sebastian, who took on the accompanying role, with proud, ARIA Award nominated teacher Scott Maxwell. Left (bottom) - Gajanan Frost performs with Aussie music legend Guy Sebastian during his recent visit to the school.

AT A GLANCE RECORD NUMBERS TACKLE GOVHACK CHALLENGE A record 45 local competitors participated in the 2018 GovHack Open Data competition, designed to provide budding entrepreneurs with an opportunity to connect, share ideas and create innovative ways to access open government data. The event ran throughout Australia simultaneously early last month, hosted locally at the Mount Gambier Library. In 46 hours of competition time, 11 local teams worked together to workshop and develop ideas to compete in the youth node or adult node. “Mount Gambier participants submitted 12 three minute videos to promote their efforts,” City of Mount Gambier Library youth services coordinator Terasa Nearmy said. “Our competitors contributed to one third of all South Australian entries. Statistics from data.gov.au also revealed that when compared to population density, Mount Gambier boasted the greatest number of hackers involved in the event which is a great achievement.” Local professionals from a variety of fields were selected to judge the 12 completed projects based on originality, quality, design, use of data and functionality, value to the community and technical and creative skills. The winners were announced at a presentation evening held at the library late last month. The best in venue winner Mount Gambier youth node was the team Bachmanns and
Fulwoods, with the project ‘Backwards and Forwards’. “The team’s concept was a board game designed to help people interact with local historical figures and intriguing life facts, all meshed together in a ‘race-to-the-end’ type game,” Ms Nearmy said. “The judges agreed that the concept, application and delivery of this idea was of an excellent standard.” The team was presented with vouchers valued at $1000 from Harvey Norman and Green Triangle Electronics. The best in venue winner Mount Gambier adult node was the team, Just we three, with the project ‘Connected, Councils Connecting Community’. “The adult node team created an interactive self-serve kiosk concept. ‘Connected’ is a cost effective platform that could directly link residents to community groups, clubs and support services in their local area,” Ms Nearmy said. “The concept has the potential to improve the mental health and physical
wellbeing of citizens, and in doing so lower the downstream costs of health and social services. The judges thought this project clearly showed that the competitors are in touch with their community.” The winning adult node team was offered a full three month membership at eNVIsion Limestone Coast valued at more than $1000. “The judges were impressed with the effort made by all competitors and the winning entries showed clear, well thought through ideas that truly showcased local community, education and professionalism,” Ms Nearmy said. Two ‘Spirit of GovHack’ Awards were presented to youth competitors Liam Moulden and Declan Kowalick. “The prizes, donated by Green Triangle Electronics and Harvey Norman, were awarded to participants who demonstrated consideration and encouragement towards all competitors with the winners to represent Mount Gambier at the prestigious State Awards in Adelaide next month,” Ms Nearmy said. The State Awards will be held in Adelaide this Wednesday and the GovHack 2018 National Red Carpet Awards night will follow later in the year. Above - Library host Terasa Nearmy (left), Friends of the Library sponsor John Cranwell, adult node winners Charlene Bachmann and Correa Bachmann, youth node winners Dale Bachmann, Elly Bachmann and Lilli Fulwood and Friends of the Library sponsor Lee Cranwell.

SPRING BLOSSOM FESTIVAL ON NOW IN MOUNT GAMBIER What a buffeting we have had in recent weeks and this has without doubt been one of the longest, coldest, drawn out starts to Spring in a long time, if you can even call it Spring. It must be, nevertheless, as the blossom trees and plants all around us are telling us so. The wonderful thing about spring is the awakening of many of the trees, shrubs and myriad plants from their dormancy or resting period over winter. Spring bulbs are in full swing and the blossom trees around the region are looking stunning despite the horrendous winds. We have been madly standing up advanced trees and securing them during these blasts at Limestone Coast Advanced Trees, both in our retail and growing areas amazed that the blossom hasn’t blown to Tasmania. At Limestone Coast Advanced Trees (167 Bay Road, Mount Gambier) the Spring Blossom Festival is in full swing with hundreds of blossom trees including weeping cherries, mop top blossom trees, magnolias, crab apples and shrubs putting on massive displays. If you haven’t called in now is the time to come for a drive an marvel at the array on offer and pick up a stunning trees for your garden. With up to 50% off selected blossom trees and shrubs now is a great time to not only get a stunning plants but bag a bargain at the same time! (see advert facing page) . sought after for their fine, lacy foliage and look stunning in pots or beside a pond or water feature, many are half price in the Spring Sale too. We deliver throughout the Limestone Coast daily and into Western Victoria daily, as far across as Geelong, Horsham and beyond, in addition to us sending plants and trees right across Australia. Last long weekend we sold heaps of weeping flowering cherries which are all looking amazing in full bloom, especially the white with double pink just bursting in to flower as I write and we have just brought another load of magnolias in from the growing area, in full flower and bud, with the new dwarf series being extremely popular for smaller gardens and pots. Spring is also seedling time, with a vast array of flowering seedlings with bulk trays of petunias and marigolds on special and tomato plants are coming out of our ears with all sorts of specials available for spring!! safely say that tomato planting time is here and that the weather can only go forward from here. Last year we were not able to provide decent stocks of our now famous Seed Sweet Potato Tubers so you can grow your own plants in your own backyard or even pots , we now have limited stocks once again, so hurry in. Our 25–40 % off normal retail pricing across the entire nursery has always been something we are proud to maintain despite increasing costs on inputs, wages, freight etc and our Evergreen magnolias have managed to catch the sale radar of the Boss, with all the “Little Gem”, “Kay Parris” and “Greenback” and “Alta’ varies reduced in the sale. These are ever popular garden favourites ideal for hedging or as specimen trees with beautifully perfumed flowers. Fruit and nut trees are also in blossom with some of our almond trees bearing nuts already and masses of flowers on the avocadoes so there should be some good crops on even our smaller trees this season. Discounted avocadoes and assorted fruit and nut trees ends on Sunday, October 28, unless sold out prior. Roses are in full swing too, with some flowering already despite the cold winter and spring and we have big reductions on standard roses available for those wishing to pick up a last minute bargain! Spring weather has also brought many of us outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and even dine outside. Our new season outdoor furniture styles are due in shortly but we are fully stocked with all of our range of solid teak and stone furniture, cast aluminium, wicker and other hardwood ranges. There are some spring specials on outdoor settings as well as coffee/ casual settings in real wicker which is often hard to find! (see website for our full range of outdoor furniture). The Spring Blossom Festival goes on until Sunday, October 28, at Gardenarium and Limestone Coast Advanced Trees joining forces to offer this amazing display at 167 Bay Road, Mount Gambier, just a stone’s throw from the Blue Lake.
CARERS WEEK SET TO CELEBRATE UNSUNG HEROES This week is National Carers Week, where recognising and celebrating the outstanding contribution unpaid carers make to our nation is the focus. Australia’s 2.7 million carers make an enormous contribution to their communities, with their caring roles being valued at $60.3 billion annually – more than $1 billion per week. This region is no exception as these everyday heroes selflessly look after, often, family members. So large is the unpaid carer workforce in Australia that organisations have been set up to support them in their vital work – not just in terms of the care they provide, but the financial strain that they take off an already under pressure health and disability sector. Mount Gambier’s Mary Arthurson is one of those carers, who fell into the role through circumstance but has stayed involved for the past 25 years. Caring initially for her ill husband and then other family members, including a grandchild with autism, Mary Arthurson has been at the coal face of the unpaid carer movement and was a driver behind the establishment of South East Carers– which started 21 years ago – a support network for unpaid carers in this region. “When I started looking after my husband I was looking for someone to talk to and I found out about Carers SA in Adelaide and tapped into them,” Mary said. Carers SA was established in 1989. Mary could immediately see the value of this type of support network for carers and was one of the first to be
part of the South East Carers group, spending time on the Carers SA board and a variety of advisory committees over the past almost three decades. “I have also been involved in palliative care and community health,” Mary said. Mary was trained as a nurse but it was a short-lived career. “Once you got married that was the end of it,” she said, although she has since done a refresher course. It is 20 years ago this month that Mary lost her husband but she has continued as a carer, for both family, and through Carers SA she is still a strong advocate for the need for the support services provided by the State body and its regional arm – South East Carers. “It provides respite and a lot of other things as well,” Mary said. “It is about companionship and having someone to talk to – someone who is in your shoes or has been in your shoes. You can always find someone in a similar situation.” While no carer begrudges taking on the care of a loved one, it is not easy and it is nothing short of life changing. “When you care for somebody you do put your life on hold,” Mary said. “All the plans you made and everything you
thought you would do, as a couple, as a family, it changes. Carers SA is a great organisation and it is vital in providing that support to carers and having that face to face support here in Mount Gambier is really important.” The national and state-wide carers bodies are also about advocacy, to ensure the vital role carers play in every community is never forgotten or underestimated. The Carers SA mission statement reflects clearly just what the network is all about. “Our mission is to work to improve the health, wellbeing, resilience and financial security of carers and to ensure that caring is a shared responsibility of family, community and the government. We are the voice of carers, so that their contribution to the South Australian community and economy is recognised.” Mount Gambier Retirement Village is supporting National Carers Week with a fundraiser afternoon tea this Wednesday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. It is a gold coin donation with lucky door prizes and raffles on offer with all proceeds going to Carers Australia. Lifestyle1 will be profiling two carers in the coming weeks to showcase the work done by these vital cogs in our community.

In round two of Division 1 baseball, the early game saw Central pitted against last season’s runner-up, South Indians. In the tightest of tight eleven inning games, South were victorious two runs to one. Central scored first in the top of the fifth when Kyall McClean found himself on second base after a wild throw from Indians third sacker, Ben Nash. McClean crossed the plate on Nathan Meinck’s hit to right field. The Indians tied the score in the bottom of the sixth after Steve Isaccson doubled to right field and scored on Bruce Morale’s two bagger to left field. Scores remained tied at the end of the ninth and with still time to play, the game continued until the even eleventh dig when South’s Bruce Morale singled to centre field and scored on Alex Lewis’ single also to centre field giving them the win. Central had nine safehits to South’s eight safehits and Central made a solitary error while South made three. Central pitcher, Dylan Chuck, picked up nine k’s and gave up two base on ball while starting pitcher for the Indians, Dean Hamilton, pitched four strike outs and gave up six free bases including one hit batter. The late game saw last season’s premiers come back to earth with a thump when they were defeated by Federal. Federal scored the first of their five runs in the top of the fourth when Wade Chant continued his excellent batting form when he singled to left field and scored on Shane Howard’s single to centre field. The runs continued in the sixth after Wade Chant again singled, this time to the infield, and scored on Alex Pearson’s double to centre field. Tigers clawed one back in the bottom of this inning when lead-off batter Brayden Morton picked a walk and scored on Tyler Horrigan’s single to centre field. Two more runs were added by the Demons in the seventh, both unearned. Kane McMillan found himself onboard after a fielders choice and advanced on Clay Carpenter’s single to right field. McMillan scored on Alex Reppin’s muffed fly at second base and Carpenter scored on a wild throw from shortstop Brodie Foster after a flyball from Travis Younghusband. Federal’s final run came in the ninth, also unearned when Travis Younghusband drew a walk and scored on Shane Howard’s hit to third base which created a wild throw. The Demons won five runs to two. Alex Reppin from Federal pitched the whole game giving up five hits and two walks but picking up thirteen strikeouts. Tigers used three pitchers over the course of the game, between them conceding ten safehits, five base on ball and a hit batter. Tigers made five errors while Federal conceded none. PREMIERSHIP COACH RETURNS TO TOP JOB Everything old is new again with North Gambier signing triple premiership coach Justin McConnell for the 2019 season in the wake of Winis Imbi’s resignation, as the Tigers look to return, not only to the finals, but to the top of the tree. McConnell’s initial tenure at Vansittart Park was from 2010 to 2015, yielding three premierships – 2012, ’13 & ’14. McConnell returned to the region this year for work and wife Noni McConnell stepped into the A Grade netball coaching role this season at North Gambier when the club needed a mid season replacement. The new parents, who recently welcomed their first daughter into the world, will now again be entrenched in Tigerland with the favourite son looking forward to the new challenge, which will start in earnest in December with preseason training. “I suppose I didn’t think I would come back if the club was still in the top echelon,” McConnell said. “But seeing where they are at the moment, it will be a good challenge. I actually haven’t coached a lot of the guys that are there now. It will have a fresh feel and I am looking forward to getting the guys back to contending., whether that takes one year or two or three. We want to find that hunger and drive to get back to the top.” McConnell’s return also gives the Tigers some much needed experience in the playing stocks, with the Tigers having lost a wealth of experience in recent years and the newly signed coach will be looking to add a couple of more experienced heads to the playing group ahead of the 2019 season. “We need that to provide that leadership but only on the field but off as well,” McConnell said. “It is more than that two hours on Saturday and we need to build that culture. We need to bring a couple of guys in that have those elite standards – how to prepare and perform on a weekly basis.” Club president Jamie Walters welcomed the return of the club’s former Messiah. “The footy committee was strong on having a playing coach, even though we have a good spread or coaches in a non-playing capacity, and the on ground leadership and direction for our group, which is actually young in age, was key in the appointment of Justin,” Walters said. “We had some good applicants and it wasn’t just a case of what was in front of our noses. We worked through our process and the coaching panel couldn’t go past the qualities of Justin as a coach and what he brings to the club on and off the field.” The McConnell era Mark II will be different, with the respected coach and player admitting fatherhood will impact his coaching style. “I have a lot more empathy and it also means my time management will have to be better,” McConnell said. “The good thing about that is you will make every session as purposeful as you can and make the most of every second. It (fatherhood) will also be a way to relax and unwind from the stresses coaching brings.”

North Gambier has also seen a change in its off field team with multi premiership Reserves coach Kevin Bryan stepping into the shoes of Jonathon Bruhn as Footy Operations Manager. “JB (Bruhn) is a quality person around the club and works tirelessly behind the scenes, he is a true club person,” Walters said. “He will still be around to guide and teach Kevin (Bryan) in the role. 20198 couldn’t come around quick enough and there is a healthy excitement around the place already.” I mbi. the 2016 premiership coach, farewelled the club at the weekend’s senior presentation night and believed it was time for a change. He was presented with a signed guernsey of that 2016 premiership team.
