COMING EVENTS

COVER • BRINGING OSTEOPATHY BACK Vince Muscat has brought osteopathy back to Mount Gambier. Together with his young family, Vince relocated from Melbourne in 2017. As of July this year Regional Osteopathy, Vince’s business, has been servicing the health-care needs of the people in Mount Gambier and its surrounds. But what exactly do osteopaths do? Osteopathy is a hands on therapy that believes your body, unlike your car, has a remarkable ability to heal itself. Osteopaths complete a five year university Masters Degree, learning about the vast interactions between your body’s muscles, bones and joints, circulation, nervous, lymphatic and hormonal systems. They use this knowledge to look for the cause of pain or restriction in your body, commonly in areas such as your neck or lower back. Osteopaths are trained to examine and treat conditions from head to toe but also have the important ability to identify conditions that need to be referred for further medical investigation. Then, using a range of techniques such as manipulation, mobilisation, stretching, massage, exercise prescription, lifestyle advice and most importantly patient education, they aim to remove the obstacles hindering your recovery. Here is a step-by-step guide of what to expect at your first treatment: 1) Your osteopath will ask about your problem and symptoms. This will include your medical history, any medications you are taking or other

factors that may not appear to be directly related to your problem 2) Your osteopath will advise you if they can treat you or you need to be referred 3) Your osteopath will conduct an examination and clinical tests. These include diagnostic, orthopaedic or neurological tests, postural assessments and activities or exercises, which determine how best to manage your condition 4) The examination may include the osteopath lifting your arms or legs and you may be asked to perform certain movements depending on your condition 5) Osteopathy takes a whole body

approach where your osteopath may look at the area that is troubling you as well as other parts of your body. For example if you have a sore knee, your osteopath may also look at your ankle, pelvis and back 6) Your osteopath may also provide education and advice to help you manage your condition between treatments. This may include giving you exercises to do at home or work. Each person receives an individualised examination, treatment and rehabilitation plan. From footballers to farmers, mums to midwives and everyone in between, Vince enjoys seeing people from all walks of life. He especially welcomes the challenge of

working with those in chronic pain. After initially opening two days a week, Vince is excited to announce he has expanded his opening hours to include Fridays. Vince is now treating Wednesday and Thursday 9am–7pm and Fridays 8am–4pm. To book in with Vince, call (08)8311 3735, visit www.regionalosteo.com.au or search Regional Osteopathy – Mount Gambier on Facebook.

ST MARTINS STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR MOUNT GAMBIER HOSPITAL St Martins Lutheran College Primary Student Representative Committee (SRC) held a House Day earlier this month to raise funds for the Mount Gambier Hospital’s Children’s Ward, as part of their Superhero Campaign, which was kicked off by the annual hospital ball. All St Martins students were invited to wear house uniforms and bring a donation along. The primary SRC set a target of $1000. St Martin’s very own superhero Ezekiel Coutts was on hand last week to present a

cheque to the Mount Gambier and Districts Health Advisory Council’s Maureen Klintberg Ezekiel was pleased to announce that the fundraising day surpassed expectations and raised $1016.10. The St Martins Lutheran College Primary SRC were happy to hear that the funds raised have been earmarked for the creation of a treatment room just for children, creating a facility that is child friendly and provides better outcomes for the physical and emotional health of young patients.

LOCAL MEMBER BACKS GOOD NEWS FOR VOLUNTEER SCREENING Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell has praised the scrapping of a volunteer screening fee by the State Government, saying the measure will save charities and community organisations thousands of dollars. From November 1 this year, South Australian volunteer screening checks - costing $59.40 per person - will be free. The checks are compulsory for those wishing to volunteer their time with charities, sporting clubs, emergency services and disability service organisations. Mr Bell said the decision would reward Mount Gambier’s many hardworking organisations that depended on multiple volunteers to run local services and events. “Meals on Wheels, the Salvos and Rotary clubs, even annual dance eisteddfods would not be able to run without the help of volunteers,” he said. “Many organisations pick up the costs of screening checks for their volunteer base, which can

run to thousands of dollars per year and this measure will allow them to direct that money to better use, back into the local community.” In the 2018-19 State Budget, the Marshall Government committed a total of $4.9million to remove all volunteer screening check fees, including working with children and vulnerable people, across the next four years. Mount Gambier businesswoman Vicki Quinn, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels for more than 10 years, said the fee removal may help prompt the State’s next generation of volunteers to start earlier. “It’s good to have a balance of younger and older volunteers but it’s true that people do tend to take up volunteering later in life,” she said. “Removing this bit of red tape might help sway the decisions of younger people into volunteering.” Mr Bell said volunteers were the unsung heroes of the state’s economy, providing countless hours of unpaid work that often flew under the community radar. “More than 900,000 South Australians currently volunteer and their contribution is valued at around $5billion annually,” he said. “Our State has one of the highest rates of volunteering in the nation. This cost-saving measure will ensure our volunteer-run organisations can focus on doing what they do best - providing important services and resources to our local communities.”

ON THE HUNT FOR DRIVING MENTORS Interested in making a real difference in the lives of many young people? Application are now open for new volunteers to commence with Grant District Council’s driver training program Youth on Wheels for 2019. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer with the Youth on Wheels program should contact council on (08)8721 0444 or access a copy of the position description, application form and volunteering handbook, which can be found on council’s website. lifestyle1.net | 04

INDUSTRY ICONS BRING ABBA TO THE SIR ROBERT HELPMANN THEATRE STAGE ABBA-solutely Fabulous might not be the first time Australian entertainment icon Rhonda Burchmore has donned the lycra body suit or

strutted around a stage singing the Swedish band’s popular playlist but it is the first time she has backed a show financially herself. The leggy

entertainer has come off a difficult time in her personal life with the loss of her mother, father and sister in a short space of time, and working alongside best friend Lara Mulcahy, singing ABBA hits and running the project herself, the first time in her illustrious career, proved the perfect antidote. “I do a heck of a lot of musical theatre and cabaret shows and I’ve always done them for other people,” Rhonda said. “And the musicals around at the moment – Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, Priscilla and Aladdin – didn’t really have roles for me and I needed something to sink my teeth into and I decided this show would be the perfect distraction.” If Rhonda was forced to sum up Abba-solutely Fabulous in one work it would be friendship – not just because she has teamed with hr talented buddy Lara Mulcahy but because that is the central theme of the show. “It is not Mamma Mia – we are not trying to imitate the show or the movie,” Rhonda said - a show both her and Lara starred in in its first Australian production. The girls, who wrote the script over a few drinks, are basically on the second phase of this tour, heading into the regional areas of Australia as far afield as North Queensland and Western Australia. “This is our own story of growing up in the 70s and not getting to the concert,” Rhonda said. It is 40 years since ABBA took Australia by storm with its concert tour. “I want people who walk away from this show to see it’s all about friendship and girl power,” Rhonda said. “It is just a really

lifestyle1.net | 06

feel good night.” Rhonda has been singing and dancing since she was two years old and the show is a throwback to growing up to the soundtrack of ABBA. “My sister was Agnetha and I was Frida and you just can’t help but

smile when you remember the silly fun times we had,” Rhonda. That, in a way, is the attraction of the show because so many of us grew up singing the hits of the Swedish sensation into our hairbrushes in front of the mirror. “And the success of Mamma Mia shows that ABBA is still current now,” Rhonda said. Being hands on behind the scenes, too, as the show’s backer and producer, has been an eye opening experience for the industry veteran. “And at the end of the day I’m responsible for the success or failure of this show – there is no one else to blame,” Rhonda said. For Rhonda, the demise of variety television has been sad – it is where she carved her reputation and learnt about the industry – Hey Hey It’s Saturday, the Mike Walsh Show and those types of platforms were often a stepping stone for wannabe musical theatre and cabaret stars. The ABBA-solutely Fabulous show sold out last year and the 2018 regional tour is attracting the same attention as Dancing Queen, Waterloo, Mamma Mia and Fernando are belted out by the two besties on stage. And once this tour is over, Rhonda will have limited time to take a breath, with a number of projects already in her diary including a cabaret show and then working with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, singing the works of Gershwin and Irving Berlin. ABBA-solutely Fabulous is appearing on the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage this Friday night so book online or head to the box office to secure your seat to the ultimate party night out.

CABERNET IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOR MONTH LONG FESTIVAL Throughout the month of October, Coonawarra is set to be a hive of activity with the return of Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations. One of South Australia’s best regional wine-based festivals it is the largest of its kind in the Limestone Coast, hosting 60 unique events occurring across five weeks. The event kicked off last Friday and tastings will run throughout October. A highlight on the wine region’s event calendar, the month is designed to showcase and celebrate the Coonawarra wine region’s signature red wine: Cabernet Sauvignon. Coonawarra Vignerons executive officer Olivia Nunn said over the course of the month, there would be plenty of opportunities for wine enthusiasts, foodies and families alike, to discover Coonawarra, whilst savouring our world-class wines and enjoying our country hospitality and sense of community. “It is a great showcase and collaborative effort of our members with 22 of our member

wineries hosting events and up to 34 member wineries involved in the regional events,” Ms Nunn said. “The Regional Retrospective Tasting is a good example of over 20 wineries co-presenting and a great opportunity for us to provide an authentic in region tasting.” The Regional Retrospective Tasting is one of the feature events in the calendar. More than 20 wineries, winemakers gather in one location to taste and compare decade old wines with current releases from a large selection of Coonawarra producers. Coonawarra Vignerson marketing and events officer Heidi Eldridge was excited to share the vast array of events that are on offer. ‘’This year’s program is jam-packed full of events taking place throughout our region. Special cellar door wine tastings, brunches, lunches, vineyard tours, dinners and Sunday sessions will showcase the regions burgeoning food credentials, and music talent, whilst the iconic events: the Masterclass, and the Retrospective Wine Tasting, will bring together the best the region has to offer to active and educate your senses with total cabernet immersion,” said Ms Eldridge. This year’s masterclass will explore the provenance of five

carefully selected, outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon or Claret wines from two vintages spanning at least 10 years. Participants will have the opportunity to taste wines with a price tag of over $350. Masterclass host and Lindeman’s winemaker Brett Sharpe said rarely do opportunities like this arise, where you can taste young and the old side by side, and evaluate the performance of each wine over time. “We look forward to welcoming Philip Rich, Wine General Manager of the Lucas Group to co-host this world class event,” he said. This year the Coonawarra Masters Golf Day, previously held in January is an addition to the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations program. “Teams of four are invited to come along and tee off with who’s who of Coonawarra, in a day of social, but competitive golf, at the picturesque Penola Golf Course,” Ms Eldridge said. Teams will be vying for a chance to wear the coveted perpetual ‘Red Jackets’, along with other prizes throughout the day. A shuttle bus will be operating from Penola, travelling the Coonawarra Strip throughout the four weekends of October to help visitors travel between wineries and more information and a complete program is available at www.coonawarra.org

SENIORS PROGRAM RELEASED The senior members of the Wattle Range community will be celebrated with an exciting program of events throughout the month of October. Co-ordinated by Wattle Range Council together with a working group of volunteers, Celebrate Seniors month will again have something for everyone. Many of the activities featured in this year’s program are those that have proved to be popular in previous years. This includes movie screenings, the Lake McIntyre walk and BBQ, the Aged Care Expo, fashion parade, mystery bus trips, high tea and old time dance, Glencoe Woolshed and Radio 5THE FM open days, and the Combined Churches and Boneham Aged Care annual fetes. Some of the new activities added include a movie day at Coonawarra Hall, cooking demonstration by Melissa Armfield, a combined open day at the Millicent Community Hub (Men’s Shed and Arts & Craft groups), Beachport Museum open day, Ants Redgum Gallery open and a Kalangadoo history and adventure walk. Council’s CEO Ben Gower encouraged all of the senior members of our community to participate. “The committee have come up with a jam-packed program of events,” he said. “I encourage anyone interested in coming along to do so - it should be great fun.” The full Celebrate Seniors October Program for 2018 is available on Council’s website www.wattlerange.sa.gov.au/ celebrateseniors, or at any of council’s offices.

REX ARILINES COMMUNITY FARE PROGRAM UP AND RUNNING The Rex “Community Fare” scheme is now up and running, with a $129 “Community Fare” available between both Mount Gambier – Melbourne and Mount Gambier Adelaide routes. The “Community Fare” is made available on 25% of seats on these flights, if booked at least 30 days or 24 hours prior to departure. This scheme now gives travellers in and out of the Mount Gambier Airport access to affordable fares for the next five years, and Rex has worked closely with the District Council of Grant to make this fare reduction a reality. District Council of Grant CEO David Singe is excited for the future. “This fare will give residents the opportunity to undertake more regular flight travel to Adelaide or Melbourne, and also gives travellers into Mount Gambier Airport the opportunity to arrange cheaper flights as part of their longer term travel plans, or access those last minute flights, which invariably are always

more expensive to obtain,” he said. “Businesses can save time and money by accessing this fare, rather than spending a full day of return driving to either capital city. Tourism is a key growth industry, and affordable air travel makes Mount Gambier a more attractive destination. Visitors can fly in, hire a car and explore everything the Limestone Coast region has on offer. Affordable air travel supports the economy of the Limestone Coast to expand and diversify.” The Mount Gambier Airport is owned and operated by the District Council of Grant and services approximately 80,000 passengers each year. Through the ‘Community Fare” it is anticipated that passenger numbers will continue to increase, unlocking the potential to increase weekly return air passenger services between Mount Gambier and Adelaide. Flight schedules and fares are available at www.rex.com.au and for more information on the mount Gambier Airport visit www.dcgrant. sa.gov.au.

PORTLAND MAKING ITS MARK ON THE CRUISE SHIP CIRCUIT Portland’s profile as a premier regional cruise destination has been showcased at Australia’s biggest cruise conference in Western Australia recently. Glenelg Shire Council met some of the world’s biggest cruise operators at the Australian Cruise Conference in Broom where industry heavy weights consulted on the future of the world’s fastest growing tourism sector. Mayor Cr Anita Rank said Portland was showcased with a gloss new brochure support by a promotional video, highlighting the region’s vast tourism assets. “The cruise ship industry is anticipated to experience between three to five per cent growth over the next decade with 100 new cruise ships currently being built. This adds to the more than 300 cruise ships currently operating around the world,” Cr Rank said. “It was evident at the conference Portland has a premier product to offer, with access to some of Australia’s major tourist attractions including the Great Ocean Road, Coonawarra Wine Region and Grampians National Park. This is in addition to our local on-shore offerings such as our seal tours, Glenelg River cruises and cape and beach attractions which receive rave reviews from passengers. The fact we have one of Australia’s best deep sea ports, which can cater for larger vessels, means Portland is a destination of interest for many of the world’s premier cruise companies. There are now six cruise ships booked over the next three years with the first arrival of the season on January 10. Given the positive reception received at the conference council, and indeed the Port of Portland, are hopeful of further bookings beyond 2020.” Cr Rank said a key learning from the conference was the importance of council working with partners, including the port, government and tourism operators, to build the region’s destination profile. “Last year a record 1.3 million Australians experienced a cruise – this is a staggering percentage of the population and a trend that shows no signs of slowing,” Cr Rank. “It’s therefore critical that Portland, and the region, is profiled front and centre at cruise conference to ensure we are top of mind when companies are planning their itineraries. This is why our tourism unit is working hard to find new experiences, working with our industry partners, to ensure a diverse range of offerings to keep luring new cruise passengers.” Planning is now underway for the 2019 season with recruitment of volunteers to assist with cruise visits. Volunteers are required for the Regatta on January 10 and Seven Seas Mariner of January 15 to assist with shuttle bus excursions and information posts. To register your interest please email tourism and events manager Mick Cottee mcottee@glenelg.vic.gov.au

HANSON CLAIMS THIRD TITLE AT DRAMA FILLED PINES ENDURO

2018 Pines Enduro winner, and top of the unlimited class, Matt Hanson & Nigel Pendlebury in action

Local Garry Turnbull & daughter Tamra worked their way onto the 2018 Pines Enduro podium, finishing the gruelling race in third.

Matt Hanson has added a third Pines Enduro title to his ever expanding off road racing trophy cabinet with a dominant performance in the 2018 edition of the Teagle Excavations ARB sponsored event. Hanson, with navigator Nigel Pendlebury, left the field in their wake, taking the title by a staggering margin of 14 minutes and 26 seconds over nearest rivals Mark Burrows and his son and navigator Matthew. Local combination Garry Turnbull and daughter Tamara, finished third, a further three minutes shy. Hanson admitted the 2018 Pines Enduro proved to be a perfect storm for his Jimco Buggy. “It is really rare to win an event by so much,” Hanson said. “We were really pleased with the lap times we were consistently getting and we worked really hard to maintain that over the course of the day.” Hanson also admitted that the margin was helped by the fact, many of his fiercest rivals, including local hope Greg Gartner

and Jamie Jennings, who suffered an oil line issue, and other highly regarded duos including last year’s winners Tyler Owen and Oliver Stephens, who succumbed to engine misfiring. The Pines Enduro also saw Andy Brown and Mark Sedran hospitalised after rolling their Alumni Craft and that saw contenders Danny Brown, Andy’s son, and George Apted, pull the pin on their race to check on Danny’s father and his navigator. The good news on that front, is after a night in hospital, the duo was released. Championship series leaders Brent Martin and Jimmy Boyle also had a weekend to forget when gearbox dramas saw them exit at the prologue stage and not take any further part in the weekend’s racing. “It certainly helped that cars that would normally be challenging us did not finish,” Hanson said. It was Hanson’s 7th time in the Jimco buggy for his third win – he previously competed in a smaller car on three occasions. Hanson’s other

victories came in 2012 and 2016. His on track success aside, the Pines Enduro is a favourite of Hanson’s on the national off road racing calendar. “There’s a few reasons,” Hanson said. “Basically it’s a great track because there’s no dust so you get great wall to wall racing. That is quite unique in this sport. It is also a great spectators course and when mates ask me which race to come to, I always say the Pines. Much of the racing is right in front of the crowd and they also have the big screens. It is also just a good track, quite a skilful track.” Fiftyfour teams started the event, that was blessed with perfect weather conditions for all three days. Above (left) - Class 2 winner & host club member Dean Carter & Bradley Jacobs. Above (right) - Glencoe’s Heath & Michelle Weedon overcame five flat tires & a broken drive shaft to take out Class 7.

Fiona has an international reputation in paper craft circles, having

Given The Junction, a volunteer run mental health service in Mount Gambier, relies entirely on fundraising and the generous support of local business and community groups, it is a massive achievement for the service to be celebrating its 10th anniversary next year. Run by Nel Jans, a migrant from the Netherlands with a strong mental health background, the goal of the mental health outreach centre is to provide a range of services, experiences and opportunities to give support to people experiencing mental health issues or recovering from mental illness. With no government funding, with the exception of the occasional small grant for a specific program or event,

taught in Paris, Poland, London, New Zealand and throughout Australia. Bookings are essential and can be made by calling Mount Gambier event coordinator Sharon Walker on 0427 250 551. The mobile shop will be open from 9am-9pm on Thursday and Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday and will have a wide range of stock including card stock, flowers, stamps, embellishments, paper, bling, dyes, tools and inks. For further details about the mobile shop and the October 4-6 class schedule for Mount Gambier head to the website www.paperflourish.com.au and click on “Out and About”.

The Junction has still managed to expand its services and programs as mental health becomes a bigger and bigger issue in all communities. This month is a busy one for the centre with a major fundraiser and a raft of activities centred around Mental Health Week. This Friday night a Goods & Services Auction & Dinner promises food, fun and laughter with MC Stan Thomson, special guest speaker Bill DeGaris and auctioneer David Kensley front and centre at the City Hall event. The fundraising event is made possible through the generosity of Mount Gambier’s service clubs – Soroptimist International Mount Gambier, Lioness Club of Mount

Gambier, Lakes Rotary Club Mount Gambier and the Lions Club of Mount Gambier – and the sponsorship of the City of Mount Gambier and TAFE SA. The goods & services auction boasts items including accommodation packages, wine, interior design consultations, wheel alignments, house painting and lawn mowing, as well as plenty of surprises. The Junction will then host a Kite Festival on October 9 at Vansittart Park as part of its mental health week activities. The Flying High Kite Festival will be the culmination of some work done in schools in the lead up to the event, where the art of kite making and what is signifies in different cultures has been explored. And while some kids will have already been part of these kite making workshops, the opportunity will be there on October 9 to make and then fly your own kite. There will also be giant kites taking to the skies, as well as face painting, art and craft workshops run by the Mount Gambier Library, a sausage sizzle and a jumping castle. The day will run from 10am to 3pm and there will be small kites for sale. Funding for the awareness raising event was provided by the Mental Health Coalition and the Federal Government’s Building Our Future funding pool. “We are hoping this will become an annual event and actually promote tourism as well as creating awareness around mental health,” Nel said. The week will also see public yoga classes and meditation classes. The popular Mental Health First Aid courses are also returning in October and November with evening and afternoon classes. For full details on The Junction and the services it provides, as well as grabbing a ticket for the dinner auction or finding out more about the Flying High Kite Festival or the raft of other Mental Health Week activities contact The Junction on 0477 886 450, email junctioncoord@gmail.com or head to the South East Junction website. The Mount Gambier High School Eaglehawks were last month crowned Year 8/9 Boys Knock-Out Soccer State Country champions. Finals were held in Adelaide last week, which saw the top four sides from around South Australia pitted against one another. Recognising the strength of junior soccer in the South East, both Mount Gambier High School and Tenison Woods College were represented in the State finals. The Eaglehawks defeated both Tenison Woods College and Grant High School to advance to the Adelaide finals. The faced Whyalla High School in the semi final, showing exceptional balls skills and control, easily defeating their opposition 3-0. The State final later that day came down to a tussle again between local rivals Mount Gambier High School and Tenison Woods College which was a credit to the soccer programs and talent in this region. The Eaglehawks claimed the title 6-0. “The boys really applied themselves throughout all four matches of the competition," said Mount Gambier High School sepcial sports coordinator Kerran Wingard. "We are extremely fortunate to have a number of highly talented individuals, however, it was the way in which they gelled as a team which made the victory truly special. Eight of the thirteen players involved have been a part of the Mount Gambier High School Special Sports Soccer Programme, which highlights the importance of this programme in giving the students the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of how one another plays, whilst further developing their own skills.” Above - Mount Gambier High School Eaglehawks Boys Years 8/9 Knock-Out Soccer State Country Champions with coach Nick Morony.
