WATTLE RANGE SUICIDE PREVENTION NETWORK MEETING With a town population of 400 and a district population around the 1000 mark, Lucindale is a community that packs a real punch. This year, the town’s most iconic event – the South East Field Days – turns 40. The field days are this Friday and Saturday in what is an event that brings the community together, celebrating all things rural, showcasing everything from yard dogs to fashion, from machinery to scarecrows, and even more importantly raising much needed funds for a raft of community groups and projects, with the tally over the past four years already topping the $2.5million dollar mark. The most significant contribution over the 40 years was $100,000 towards the Naracoorte Hospital CATSCAN. “That is something we

are exceptionally proud of,” South East Field Days secretary Lyn Crosby said. Every year the exhibitors sprawl across Yakka Park and with a 40th anniversary to celebrate, there will be a mix of nostalgia, past favourite attractions, as well as new entertainment to keep the tens of thousands of visitors interested from start to finish. Aussie FMX is the main attraction at the 40th anniversary event. Established by Brodie Carmichael, this freestyle motocross show is an exciting, family friendly event that promises to thrill. “The Aussie FMX team know what it’s like to be a kid in the crowd because for most of us that’s where our passion for bikes began,” Brodie said. “We take the time to talk to the kids after the show and the riders are happy to answer questions, pose for photos, sign autographs and allow the kids the opportunity to see the bikes up close.” Aussie FMX pack a lot of action into a 30 minute show as they perform death defying tricks. On the flip side to Aussie FMX’s debut at the field days, organisers have also been working overtime to ensure the history of the event and the hours and hours of volunteer manpower that has seen the event grow into, not only one of the most visited field days in Australia, but a lucrative community fundraiser. Jeff Davey has been collecting memorabilia, including photos, so the history of the South East Field Days can be celebrated at this anniversary event and no doubt he would still be happy for people to hand over any field days history they have in their possession. Jeff, like many of the long standing Lucindale Lions Club members – the club behind the successful event – has also had a front row seat to the evolution of the field days, having rolled up his sleeves alongside the rest of the community in developing Yakka Park and continuing to provide manpower and expertise to the many upgrades the facility has enjoyed over the years. The list of old favourites will be lead by the South Australian Police Dixieland Band. “They have been so popular and we are so glad they could come back for our 40th anniversary,” Lyn said.

2018 BLUE LAKE NATIONALS (2018 AUSTRALIAN STREET ROD FEDERATION (ASRF) REGIONAL BLUE LAKE NATIONALS) Organisers have also managed to secure the always popular Carlton Brewery draught horses. “That’s a bit of a coup,” Lyn said. Fashion has long been a central part of the field days and that will also have an historic flavour with the Millicent Museum coming on board and sharing their outstanding and extensive collection of vintage clothing. There will be a focus on a Woolmark collection in the fashion parades as well as the retro clothing from the Millicent Museum,” Lyn said. The Lions Mobile Skin Cancer screening has become a feature of the event in recent years, as well, and all it takes is one quick phone call to book your place – (08)8766 7001. Given there were 90 cases referred for further medical assessment last year, it is a service well worth taking advantage of. Dairy SA is on board with an interactive display for the kids and the Coprice/ Elders South Australian Working Dog Championships always attracts a crowd. In line with previous years, the 2018 South East Field Days look set to have around 600 exhibitors with more than 20,000 people expected to converge on Yakka Park over the two days – March 16 & 17. TIGER TAKES HOME BILL It has been a big season for North Gambier top order batsman Jake Schutz and he has capped it off with his first Bill Whitty Medal – adjudged the best performed player in the Barber Shield competition of the Mount Gambier & District Cricket Association. The stylish bat, also captained the South East team to a successful title defence of its SA Country Cricket title – his first time in the top role – and he also backed up his regular season performance with a century in the Barber Shield semi finals, showing her can get the job done when it counts most. Schutz also took home the batting trophy after amassing 479 runs for the season – 151 runs more than second placed Jake Blackwell (West Gambier). He was also the third highest run scorer in the T20 competition, showing he can adapt to all forms of

the game. Not surprisingly, Schutz was named skipper of the Barber Shield team of the year. Schutz took home the medal by a solitary vote from South Gambier’s Dylan Clough – the Millicent recruit having an impact with both bat and ball in 2017/18. Millicent’s John Facey won the T20 Player of the Year. The association has also started a tradition of handing out retrospective Bill Whitty Medals to past winners of the Barber Shield Player of the Year, prior to the medal being named in the cricket icon’s honour, and at last week’s presentation, Jason Hann, who was playing for Kongorong when he claimed the top honour, was recognsied. Hann was the 1996/97 winner and now has a Bill Whitty Medal to show for his efforts. North Gambier claimed another A.R. Norman Trophy after finishing minor premiers in the Barber Shield. All three senior grades – Barber Shield, Crouch Shield and Cox Bros Shield contested their title deciders at the weekend. BRUGGEMMANN GOES BACK TO BACK Warriors coach Leyna Bruggemann has gone back to back, claiming her second Mount Gambier Softball League best & fairest award. Bruggemann became the first player, since the open grade was introduced, to claim all three major awards on offer, also taking home the batting average and runs batted in accolades. Wanderers’ Em Hart and Jo Hart, shared the Marj Cooke Memorial Award, which is handed out to players or volunteers within the league that make a significant contribution to softball in the region. Rising star Mackenzie Millard won the Kath Sims Memorial Award as the best player at the State Championships. It was, in fact, Bruggemann, who resurrected Mount Gambier’s senior representative team and their return to the State Championships was triumphant – returning with the title. Not surprisingly, Demons’ Anna Livingston, who has been a great pick up for the seaside club, finished second to Bruggemann in both the best & fairest standings and the runs batted in, while the always consistent Jo Hopgood was second to the Warriors star in the batting average stakes. COLLECTED STUPIDITY - ONE MORE CHANCE... By ROBBIE TANSEL Very funny Lifestyle1. I’ve spent the last two weeks writing well researched and insightful discussions around the recent Chinese government decision to ban strippers at funerals. I was expecting an appropriate picture of an attractive stripper, and instead of an attractive young lady, you’ve presented a transsexual stripper and male strippers. You people are not as funny as you think you are. Yes, I’m sure you could say the same to me. I did tell you though that I would keep writing stories about strippers until I got a photo with my article that I was

happy with. It’s noticeable that none of our candidates in the upcoming State election has let us know their position on strippers at funerals. While the candidates are talking about fracking and how they’re going to drive development in our area, I think they’re missing this key issue. I don’t feel comfortable casting my vote until I can be assured that the person I’m voting for will not ban strippers at funerals I’ll be expecting an email on the policy position of all candidates on this key issue ASAP. In these times of political correctness and respect for women, I think it’s important that I let you know I’ve never actually seen a stripper. I’ve been to a few funerals in my life, but unfortunately I’ve only been to the ones without

strippers. I suspect that’s why I didn’t enjoy any of them. I don’t mind telling you that they were so bad I actually cried at a couple. Maybe if I’d gone to a funeral whilst in China last year, I might have seen a stripper. Apart from not seeing one at a funeral, I haven’t ever been to a strip club. I like attractive young ladies with their clothes on just fine, and as a rule am quite happy with the idea of watching them take their clothes off. But I think I’d find it a bit unusual being in a room with a bunch of other guys staring at a woman taking her clothes off. I think the crux of my problem with watching a stripper, is that you spend the bulk of your life from about twelve years old, liking to look at women As you go through puberty and the hormones are pumping, you may even want to look at particular parts of the women you encounter. The parts that are generally covered with clothes may hold particular interest. It is considered socially unacceptable to stare directly at these body parts though. Being caught looking at these body parts would positively be frowned upon. I suspect that if I went to a strip club, a place specifically designed so that women can take their clothes off for men to look at their bits, I would find it quite a confusing experience. I’ve trained myself to look a woman in the eyes, and I suspect that would seem really creepy in that environment. While Donna and I were in the United

States a few years ago, we went to a Hooters restaurant. Most of you will know this is a restaurant with attractive female wait staff in tight fitting clothes. She was being very generous allowing

me to go to a restaurant like this as I wasn’t really going based on the reviews of their meals. I did find it very much as I described above though as I just didn’t know where to look. I spent most of my time watching a father sitting with his son who I estimate to have been about nine, thinking it seemed pretty inappropriate. The only time it would be appropriate to take your nine year old to Hooters would be if it was time to have the talk about the birds and the bees. I get the feeling that strippers may not catch on at Australian funerals. With this in mind I thought I’d come up with a list of other things that may brighten funerals up for me. Pizza. A lucky door prize. A dress up theme. Fireworks. Shooting the corpse out of a cannon into the grave. Allowing someone to draw a moustache onto the dead person with a texta. The Harlem Globetrotters stopping by to do some tricks. A magician sticking swords into the coffin, or cutting it in half. Having the funeral as the half time entertainment of an AFL match. Lolly bags. Every mourner leaves with a complimentary pair of socks. Throwing a bouquet of flowers and whoever catches it is the next person to be buried. One thing that would really improve funerals for me would be people eulogising the deceased in a more balanced fashion. They tell us all the wonderful things about the person, but none of their failings or the things that were bad about them. I’m sure they were a nice person, but they weren’t perfect. I actually have already signed someone up to talk about all of my failings at my funeral. For the sake of this article, we’ll call him Pumpkin Cabbage. Pumpkin is going to talk about all the reasons why people thought I was an ahole. To be honest, in my case, it may have been more sensible to try and organise someone with the job of finding some positive things to say about me. Let’s be honest. Having strippers at funerals makes much more sense than having them at bucks shows. Realistically, a eulogy should be presented at a bucks show. The groomto-be is as good as dead to all of his friends once he gets married. I don’t know if the gang at Lifestyle1 think I’m going to run out of stripper articles, but I’m in this for the long haul. If you think you might be able to make attending a strip club more bearable for me email me at robbietansel@gmail.com

LOCAL FARMER TAKES MATTERS INTO HIS OWN HANDS In 2015 Kalangadoo farmer David Smith went on a fact finding mission to the United States as the battle against unconventional gas mining (fracking) really started to ramp up in this region and across South Australia. That trip, which included key community leaders, was in the midst of the Lock The Gate campaign this region rallied hard against fracking. Issues with catching up with mining companies on the trip – the contingent had contacted four – saw David and his travelling party miss out on critical meetings with at least one key person and so in the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, David promised – “I’ll be back”. And return he did, including some key Queensland families in his second fact finding mission last year and this time he had a Limestone Coast crew, a journalist and cameraman, in tow, so he could document his trip and share his findings with the general public. “It definitely felt like unfinished business,”

David said. “I realised I had a lot of information and that I should really do more with it than I had which is why I decided to make the documentary.” The self-funded project, which saw him re-mortgage his farm, has been a passion project, but the reaction to its opening earlier this year has already buoyed David that is was a story that had to be shared. The trip had been on his mind for some time but the project was fast tracked when the South Australian Government offered a royalty deal to farms opening their gates to unconventional gas exploration. “I realised I had to get the message out,” David said. “Talking to politicians about fracking seemed to be water off a duck’s back so I realised I had to get the message out to the voters and appeal to them.” And so David Smith started juggling farming with film making and the finished product, Pipe Dreams

fracking and sees himself as just one of many playing their part. “This (the film) is just my way of making a contribution towards the effort that so many people are doing,” David said. “I feel this is just one piece of the jigsaw puzzle of trying to get our message across to the general public. Making the film has also given me a chance to talk to the media and get the message out that way as well.” David (pictured left) also points out that while his initial concern was over the effect on groundwater, the health issues and environmental impacts are now part of his message.

Fractured Lives, shot and edited by Mount Gambier’s Robert Tremelling, is doing a tour of this region, and has also had screenings in Adelaide. Financing the project himself, has put pressure on David’s finances but there was method in his madness. “ I didn’t wish to be bound by the pressure or expectation of others and once you get money from people they want their two bobs worth and they’ve got their own thoughts,” David said. The opening attracted a wide variety of people, from those from the land, older voters, but also a smattering of young people and people based in regional cities. “It is an issue that will affect us all and that’s an important part of our message,” David said. David knows there are plenty of people working on the fight against

Advertorial • Collins Court Butchers

AUSTRALIA’S BEST SAUSAGE MADE RIGHT HERE IN THE LIMESTONE COAST Mick Lamond and the team at Collins Court Butchers have gone one better than in 2017 – taking out the best traditional pork sausage in Australia at the Australian Meat Council’s Sausage King Competition. Having taken the South Australian title for the second consecutive year, Mick and the team were hopeful of improving on their second placing at national level in 2017 – and they did. “It shows the consistency of our product, the flavour and the quality of the meat we use in our sausages pays off,” Collins Court Butcher owner Mick Lamond said. “Every butcher thinks they make the best sausages but it is good to enter these industry competitions and see how you really stack up.” Collins Court Butchers’ focus on the traditional sausages, as well as the gourmet products that have been in vogue for a few years, is justified by the market. “We were selling about 10 kilograms of pork sausages a week,” Mick said. “But when the news got out about our State win, it went up to 30-40kg and we think the national win will see that rise again.” Collins Court first took out the regional awards before heading to the State finals and then earning their place in the national competition. Mick has been in the industry for almost two decades, owning his own business for more than a decade. “It’s a team effort,” he said. “I have five staff working with me here every day and we work well

as a team and whatever we achieve is a team effort.” Customer service and using locally sourced product are the other cornerstones to the Collins Court Butcher business. “Customer service is the most important thing,” Mick said. “We are always trying to help our customers and we will source anything for them or do anything for them that we can.” Collins Court Butchers

sources its lamb from Mount Schank and Moorak producers and also chases its beef locally. “We want to support local and use local wherever we can.” The national winning pork sausage also now contains local product, with Mick finding a Beachport supplier to help with some of his pork needs. Right - Mick Lamond.

AT A GLANCE INDIGENOUS SITE GETTING CLOSER TO HERITAGE LISTING The Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape bid for UNESCO World Heritage listing has reached a new milestone last week after being formally accepted for assessment by the World Heritage Centre. The announcement means the local indigenous site is now one step closer to inclusion on the World Heritage List. This announcement means that Budj Bim is now one step closer to joining sites such as Kakadu National Park and the Great Barrier Reef as Australian icons. If successfully added to the World Heritage List, Budj Bim would be Australia’s 20th world heritage site and the first exclusively recognised for its Indigenous cultural values. Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Anita Rank praised the efforts of the Gunditjmara community who have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone. “I commend the efforts of the traditional owners who have spent almost 15 years in campaigning to ensure that this important cultural site is recognised across the world,” she said CELEBRATE ST PATRICK’S DAY EARLY & IN STYLE A Taste of Ireland is set to hit Mount Gambier’s Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage on March 14. NEW FESTIVAL ON THE MOUNT GAMBIER CALENDAR The Main Corner and Riddoch Art Gallery will host the inaugural International Limestone Coast Video Art Festival in Mount Gambier from September 29 to October 21. Submissions are now open and Australian and international video artists are invited to apply for a chance to win a grand prize of $3000. The festival will celebrate video art and place special emphasis on innovative and ground-breaking video art internationally, including the work of Australian and South Australian artists. “We encourage innovative works created by video artists, and our 2018 program will include an exhibition, conference, screenings, workshops and performances,” Riddoch Art Gallery Director Dr Melentie Pandilovski said. Entry is free, and may include up to three original works. Submitted works can be up to 12 minutes long and must be produced in the period from January 2014 to February 2018. Entries are open now and close on Friday, March 30. The festival aims to raise the scope of programming at the Riddoch Art Gallery and Main Corner by presenting an experimental and innovative exhibition, alongside a diverse program that challenge established ways of thinking. The theme for the 2018 Festival is ‘The Lived Body’. It focuses on art projects that reveal the human relationship to both technology and nature, and attempts to provide a metaphorical response via video art. “Our program promises to stimulate, reveal, and surprise,” Dr Pandilovski said. AT A GLANCE

JAZZ FESTIVAL NEEDS MORE VOLUNTEERS Unprecedented interest in Generations in Jazz has prompted calls for more volunteers for the May 4-6 event being held in SA’s Limestone Coast. GIJ volunteer co-ordinator Fiona Unger said a record number of participating schools in 2018 and the popularity of headline act The Cat Empire had triggered a surge of inquiry from festivalgoers. “More than 5100 emerging musicians from 130 schools from across Australia will travel to Mount Gambier, along with jazz music fans and a star-studded line-up of guest artists,” she said. “We have already recruited 150 volunteers to help cater for the crowds, but with more bands and vocal groups coming to perform on the Saturday, we need to double that figure to ensure that the weekend goes off without a hitch.” Thanks to the wide reach of social media, some of this year’s first-time volunteers will be travelling from as far away as Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and even New Zealand to help out at the festival. “There is room on our team for all abilities and skill sets and you certainly don’t need a music background; we

are just looking for enthusiastic people who are interested in people, and who are able to donate some hours to this fantastic community-run event,” Fiona said. An estimated 4000 volunteer hours were clocked up during the three days of last year’s festival alone, with thousands more poured into planning and preparation work throughout the year. Volunteer roles include site construction, traffic and parking management, stage management, office support, ticket booth and merchandise sales, festival photography and guest artist chaperoning. Jobs are assigned according to preference, experience, skills and availability. “Generations in Jazz brings so many visitors to South Australia and certainly raises the profile of the region, so we rely on volunteers to ensure it runs smoothly - without them, there would be no festival,” Fiona said. “This is also an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in what it takes to produce a festival from the start-up phase.” Former Wesley College St Kilda Road student, Hunter Griffin, is among the new volunteer recruits for 2018, and will be helping to manage the various GIJ social media accounts. at Monash University, the 18-year-old came to the attention of organisers after posting a candid online video of his school GIJ experience to YouTube. “I’ve been to five GIJ events and I’m really looking forward to coming back this year – it’s so much fun seeing all of the performers and bands, and it’s a really inspiring atmosphere,” he said. GIJ organisers said Hunter was the perfect example of the ongoing influence the festival has on its participants. “We love receiving the requests to volunteer from past participants who attended the festival as school participants, and still want to be involved after graduating,” said Fiona Unger. “Their contribution demonstrates to us how much the event means to them.” Download the Volunteer Registration Form at www. generationsinjazz.com.au/volunteering or email volunteers@generationsinjazz. com.au for further details. FACELIFT FOR HIGH SCHOOL GATES The gates of Naracoorte High School are currently receiving a much needed facelift and will be officially opened this Sunday. The construction has not changed since the gates were built in September 1955. The original gates were built by Mr. C. Pomery & Son. of Naracoorte. Named the DeGaris Memorial Gates, A.C. DeGaris, who was presiding as chairman of the High School Council presented the gates to the school in honour of his son, Lewis, an old scholar, who was killed in action during the second World War in Iceland. Mr DeGaris presided as Naracoorte High School Council chairman from 1944–1957. The new structure has been designed by architect, Brett Julian, who utilised locally sourced Wrattonbully stonework. The original gates will be inserted into the new erection between the stone plinths. Father Wayne Corker will officiate the ceremony which will commence at 1.30pm and Bob DeGaris, who is 90 years young and his family, will be attending the celebration to regale their stories and provide a showcase of their family history. lifestyle1.net | 28

South East Field & Game recently hosted a coaching day with one of Australia’s leading sporting clay shooters. Chris Brown, from Browns Shooting Academy, conducted the clinics for 12 local shooters keen to improve their shooting skills. Participants ranged in age from 12 to 73 years, just proving that you are never too old to learn. This is the second visit Brown has made to Burrungule Park following on from his first visit last September. Brown has represented Australia in the sporting clays discipline and is a four time winner of the FITASC Australian Grand Prix, a title he is about to defend at the Rocky Gully range at Murray Bridge.

DEMONS INTO TITLE DECIDER In the elimination final Concordes and Wanderers took the field in extremely hot and testing conditions for one of the first times this season. The start was always going to be critical for both clubs, and it was Concordes who came out the better, batting through their line up in the first innings and piling on five runs with a highlight of Codie Jackway almost clearing the fence on the full. Wanderers also looked ready to bat, scoring twice in the first innings, but from then on in it was one way traffic, as Concordes scored six runs in the second innings thanks to safe hits to Dana Jones and Billie Jones. A pitching change from Wanderers did little to stop the flow of runs, and Concordes used their heads and picked out a number of walks to combine with their hits to score a further five runs in the third, and three in the fourth. The fourth innings saw some resistance from Wanderers as Fiona Finch, Jo Hart and Cathy Whiting crossed the plate but the game was never really in doubt, and Concordes ran away big winners, 19-7. Best for the victors were Billie Jones with four from four hits, and Dana Jones with three from four. Dana Jones also pitched very well in tough conditions, holding Wanderers to only five safe hits. Linda Dodds also stood out with the bat with a 3

bagger and other safe hit. For Wanderers Jo Hart tried hard all game and scored two safe hits, as did Fiona Finch. The second game saw minor premiers Warriors take on the in form Demons, in what proved to be an excellent match for spectators. Demons came out of the blocks firing, scoring two runs in the first innings after outfield hits to Mackenzie Millard, Cody Manning and Anna Livingston. Warrior came back immediately with a run of their own, as Nicole Vause crossed the plate after some good team batting. The second innings saw no runs added as the pitching duel between Anna Livingston, of Demons, and Leyna Bruggemann, of Warriors, kicked into gear. In the third innings Warriors scored to equalise on a piece of heads up base running by Bruggemann and Vause, and the scores stayed locked at 2-2 until the fifth innings. That innings saw Demons finally break the shackles, and consecutive safe hits by Manning, Livingston and Monica Payne saw three runs cross the plate, giving Demons a handy lead heading into the final two innings. They were able to extend this lead further in the seventh innings, as safe hits again to Manning and Livingston, as well and Karen Cawthorne

and Taylor Wilson-Smith saw a massive five runs cross the plate, making the score 10-2 and effectively putting the game out of Warriors reach. Stand out players were Livington, who pitched with control and accuracy throughout, as well as helping herself to three from three safe hits. Captain Cody Manning also was outstanding with the bat, with four hits from four. For Warriors, Bruggemann toiled hard with ball and bat, scoring three from three safe hits, matched by Nic Vause with three safe hits. Demons are now straight into the grand final and await the winner of Concordes and Warriors. RESULTS Demons 10 (C. Manning 4; A. Livingston 3; Mackenzie Millard 2; B. Morale, S. Nieuwenhuizen, M. Payne, K. Cawthorne, T. Wilson-Smith) d Warriors 2 (N. Vause, L. Bruggemann 3; C. Chaplin, M. Hann, C. Hanson, R. Sneath) PRELIMINARY FINAL (March 17) Warriors v Concordes United Right - Demons skipper Cody Manning led from the front in the weekend’s 2nd semi final.
